IN THE second series of Blackadder,
the acid-tongued Elizabethan hero is handed a map
as a petulant ''Queenie'' banishes him
on a round-the-world voyage.
It's just a blank piece of paper, and he is asked
if he could just pencil it in as he sails along.
It is hard to contemplate such a sense of mystery about the world in this age
of GPS phone apps and Google Earth, where every backyard barbecue venue
can be found from space. What is there left to discover?
Yet a new exhibition at the State Library of NSW goes back just a few hundred years
to when the world's best cartographers would happily write the Latin for
''Here be dragons'' or ''Here are lions'' to depict dangerous areas still to be explored.

''the Great Southern Land''.
The peg for the exhibition is the centenary of
Sir Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic expedition,
which sailed from Hobart on December 2, 1911.
But it also showcases
the library's magnificent
200,000-strong collection of maps
illustrating the discovery and
habitation of the southern hemisphere.
Mawson's achievements are duly acknowledged, curator Maggie Patton says.
His first expedition, the AAE 1911-14,
was a scientific mission
that surveyed much of what is now
the Australian Antarctic Territory.
Such a vast territorial claim depended on the heroic struggles of expedition members, illustrated by a companion display which focuses on the ''forgotten men''
of the Western base party. Led by polar veteran Frank Wild, the Western party
spent 12 months on sledging and surveying duties without loss of life, but
their achievements were overshadowed by the dramas of the main party.
A key map in the exhibition, from 1939,
shows Australia's official polar claims
following Mawson's second expedition,
the British, Australian, New Zealand
Antarctic Research Expedition
from 1929 to 1931.
Patton says
''this is considered the world's first reliable map of Antarctica''.
But many early maps of the region were anything but reliable.
The earliest in the exhibition, by Francesco Berlinghieri, was made in 1492,
after Columbus had discovered the Americas.
Essentially it shows the world
as envisaged by Ptolemy,
the Greek astronomer and geographer,
1200 years earlier -
with a vast unknown land,
terra incognita.
Philosophers such as Ptolemy believed there must be a
southern land ''to provide balance'', Patton says.
Ironically,
the first map
to focus entirely on Antarctica,
Polus Antarcticus made in 1637
by the renowned Dutch cartographer
Hendricus Hondius,
concluded there was no continent.
The version in the exhibition, made around 1657,
and incorporating Abel Tasman's discoveries of
southern Australia and New Zealand, is
beautifully hand coloured with ornate cartouches.
On his second voyage in 1772, Captain Cook set out to prove whether Antarctica existed.
The exhibition features an original chart, with a handwritten note on the back advising
that the yellow line on the front shows Cook's proposed route for the Resolution and
Adventure.
Cook sailed deep into
the Antarctic Circle three times,
on the boundaries of what was then possible.
His verdict?
No continent existed -
or if it did, it would be uninhabitable.

I missed it to, but just before the Vatican Secret Files On Display, news,
I was picturing some of those old, 'inaccurate' world maps,
and how many of them had 'the great southern land', including Chinese maps,
and suddenly I wanted to see All of them, over-laid...I just sort of pictured,
from some of the odd old maps they let us see, what the ancient, Moving masses of land, could have looked like, over Very Ancient times.
And as it is, that article admitting to a 2000 Year 'fascination', also admits to being
aware of a much bigger world, with a land to 'return to' (stories=memories),
at a time they decided to tie/Bind Up, The Words of The Bible to that,
"oh, it was just recent local history, of local people.", 'out of Egypt' lie.
It really is like they do keep admitting
the truth of Bible Time Line - Australia Connections,
in news, docos, movies etc, an image here, a line there,
showing blatant contradictions in the 'accepted' time lines
and histories, and pointing at Australia's many 'overlooked'
and very ancient histories.
But still, despite how many historic and archeological 'anomalies' would clearly line up,
none game to review and compare what's actually written in The Bible, with what science
has caught up with.
And yet more and more, I keep getting the nagging feeling, that someone with influence,
has to start bringing it out, at least up 'chats around dining tables' level.
Particularly with the RISE in TRASHING OUR SOLDIERS AND THEIR GRAVES;
'pacifying' 'nice' Australians to Not Fight FOR Their Country,
BUT FIGHT FOR FOREIGN INVADERS, AND MORE of THEM TO COME IN,
while GENUINE Refugees and Migrant Applicants who want to be Part Of Our Western/Christian, keep getting knocked back,
EVEN WITH Western/Christian AUSTRALIAN BACKING their applications !!???

Manuscripts, parchments made available by Vatican
Archives formed key setting for Dan Bronw novel
THE papal order in which Martin Luther was excommunicated and a
letter by England's King Henry VIII asking for an annulment of his first
marriage are among 100 items from the Vatican Secret Archives to go on
display overnight in Rome.
Titled "Lux in Arcana (Light in the Secret) - The Vatican Secret
Archives Reveals Itself," the exhibition is being held at the city's
Capitoline Museums.
It contains manuscripts, parchments and registers which
are usually only viewed by scholars who have obtained
special permission from the Vatican.
The exhibition includes written exchanges between a long succession of popes
and various world leaders and famous historical figures, including
Italian Renaissance master Michelangelo, French Enlightenment author Voltaire
and US President Abraham Lincoln.
Other documents on display are related to the separate heresy trials
against astronomer Galileo Galilei
and the warrior priests of the Knights Templar.
The exhibition is scheduled to run until September.
The Vatican Secret Archives, a collection spanning more than 1000 years, are
stored in climate controlled chambers in Vatican City.
Interest in the archives has increased in recent years among the general public
after they formed one of the key settings of US author Dan Brown's
international bestselling novel, Angels and Demons, which spawned a Hollywood film
of the same name.
The book deals with a fictional conspiracy by a secret order, the Illuminati,
to destroy the Vatican.

And then we will have the HENRY REPORT – no, not the one about tax,

A PICTURE featuring Port Arthur gunman Martin Bryant
was awarded Tasmania's leading prize for landscape painting yesterday.
Sydney artist Rodney Pople, who won the $35,000 Glover Prize,
defended his controversial painting saying that as an artist he saw it
as his role to sometimes bring issues up that were uncomfortable, the
Hobart Mercury reports.
"There are too many artists just doing things for the market and I tend to
want to do work that has a bit more of an edge to it," he said.
Mr Pople said he was living in Sydney on April 28, 1996,
when 35 people were murdered.
A Hobart detective, who spent 24 hours at the scene of the massacre and
twice interviewed Bryant, is outraged over the art award.
Former Tasmania Police inspector John Warren said: "I can't comprehend
how someone can be so insensitive to all the victims and people who have been
scarred for life.
"They would be outraged and so am I."
Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority chief executive Stephen Large
said that any publicity or images associated with Bryant were not helpful to
those affected by the Port Arthur massacre.
Mr Warren said he found the painting totally outrageous, adding:
"I think it is in very poor taste.
"He might be a good artist but he has shown no common sense."
Mr Pople said he was aware of how deeply hurt Tasmanians had been by the massacre.
But he defended Bryant's inclusion in the painting, explaining: "It is very
much part of the imprint of the landscape of Port Arthur as much as the
surreal beauty of the green fields, which were put in to camouflage the
brutality of the whole place.
"Martin Bryant is not glorified in the painting he is very small and he's in there because
he is part of the framework and footprint of the landscape but only in a very small scale.
"He is sort of fading into the distance compared to the power of the whole landscape but
he is part of it. I am not in any way glorifying Martin Bryant but to ignore it is looking in
the wrong way as well."
Chief judge Doug Hall said that raising the profile of the Glover Prize,
which is sponsored by a hotel chain, was the last thing on the judges' minds.
The three judges had all agreed that the Pople painting was the best and not a
gratuitous or provocative work.

Jan Senbergs.
Sponsor Federal Hotels, which is putting
$165,000 into the Glover prize over five years, was
unmoved by the furore over the painting.
"Our only comment is that it is a matter for the judges and they are selected for
their skills and expertise," the company's communications director Daniel Hanna said.

Police are trying to trace
the account holder,
whose uploaded under
the alias "FreeMartinBryant".
The nine-minute evidence video
was stolen from the Tasmanian Police archive.
It contains graphic images of some of the 35 people shot dead at the
tourist spot, and police last night were trying to have it removed from
the internet.
FreeMartinBryant's user profile contains more than
20 videos pertaining to "conspiracies" surrounding the events of
Port Arthur, with several videos pertaining to Bryant's "innocence".
It is unknown how the footage was obtained,
but it also appeared on the internet in 2004 .
"Unfortunately this isn't the first time that this training video has turned up
in the wider community," Deputy Commissioner Scott Tilyard said.

"It has been known for some years
that copies of the police training video
have found their way into the public domain.
"A copy was located at a public tip in 2004, which led to an investigation."
Police Minister David O'Byrne said the footage was unlikely to have been stolen recently.
The video archive was upgraded in 2004.
"Tasmania Police changed their procedures after discovering the material may be
in the public domain, in 2004," he said. "I'm advised no breach has occurred since then
and that the current procedures for handling such material are secure."
Police are greatly concerned about the effect the video could have on the wider community.
"It is highly distressing not only for the families of the victims, but for
the community, for these images to be available on the internet," Mr
Tilyard said.
Trauma psychologist Paul Stevenson,
who worked for many years
with many of the survivors and victims' families,
shared the disbelief and horror
about the posted video.
"To post this is a nasty, terrible thing to have occurred,"
the Brisbane-based consultant psychologist said.
"By watching or hearing it is a re-experience -
all of those things people felt at the time come back.
The tragedy occurs all over.
"This is very distressing ...
a real worry for families of victims
because
this is exactly what triggers
post-traumatic stress."

Hobart has put on a chilly welcome for Dutch royals the Prince
of Orange Willem-Alexander and Princess Maxima.
Premier Paul Lennon and Governor William Cox braved icy winds to
meet the royal couple from the Netherlands at Hobart airport on
Wednesday afternoon.
"We are very pleased and honoured that their royal highnesses
have chosen to include Tasmania in their Australian visit," Mr Lennon said.
"I am particularly delighted that the royal couple has chosen to
spend two days in Tasmania visiting a number of our attractions.
"Dutch explorer Abel Tasman was the first European
to sight the state that now bears his name and the
steady stream of Dutch migrants to Tasmania have made
an enormous contribution in so many areas."
The couple's itinerary includes
a tour of the Tasmanian Museum
and Art Gallery,
a visit to Port Arthur
and a private reception for
the Dutch community
at the Henry Jones Art hotel.
The couple is
in Australia on an official visit
to celebrate 400 years since
Dutch explorers landed
on the coast of Western Australia.
They will fly to Sydney on Thursday afternoon and from there
they will travel to New Zealand.

IN THE second series of Blackadder,
the acid-tongued Elizabethan hero is handed a map
as a petulant ''Queenie'' banishes him
on a round-the-world voyage.
It's just a blank piece of paper, and he is asked
if he could just pencil it in as he sails along.
It is hard to contemplate such a sense of mystery about the world in this age
of GPS phone apps and Google Earth, where every backyard barbecue venue
can be found from space. What is there left to discover?
Yet a new exhibition at the State Library of NSW goes back just a few hundred years
to when the world's best cartographers would happily write the Latin for
''Here be dragons'' or ''Here are lions'' to depict dangerous areas still to be explored.

spanning 2000 years of
fascination with
''the Great Southern Land''.
The peg for the exhibition is the centenary of
Sir Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic expedition,
which sailed from Hobart on December 2, 1911.
But it also showcases
the library's magnificent
200,000-strong collection of maps
illustrating the discovery and
habitation of the southern hemisphere.
Mawson's achievements are duly acknowledged, curator Maggie Patton says.
His first expedition, the AAE 1911-14,
was a scientific mission
that surveyed much of what is now
the Australian Antarctic Territory.
Such a vast territorial claim depended on the heroic struggles of
expedition members, illustrated by a companion display which focuses on
the ''forgotten men''
of the Western base party. Led by polar veteran Frank Wild, the Western party
spent 12 months on sledging and surveying duties without loss of life, but
their achievements were overshadowed by the dramas of the main party.
A key map in the exhibition, from 1939,
shows Australia's official polar claims
following Mawson's second expedition,
the British, Australian, New Zealand
Antarctic Research Expedition
from 1929 to 1931.
Patton says
''this is considered the world's first reliable map of Antarctica''.
But many early maps of the region were anything but reliable.
The earliest in the exhibition, by Francesco Berlinghieri, was made in 1492,
after Columbus had discovered the Americas.
Essentially it shows the world
as envisaged by Ptolemy,
the Greek astronomer and geographer,
1200 years earlier -
with a vast unknown land,
terra incognita.
Philosophers such as Ptolemy believed there must be a
southern land ''to provide balance'', Patton says.
Ironically,
the first map
to focus entirely on Antarctica,
Polus Antarcticus made in 1637
by the renowned Dutch cartographer
Hendricus Hondius,
concluded there was no continent.
The version in the exhibition, made around 1657,
and incorporating Abel Tasman's discoveries of
southern Australia and New Zealand, is
beautifully hand coloured with ornate cartouches.
On his second voyage in 1772, Captain Cook set out to prove whether Antarctica existed.
The exhibition features an original chart, with a handwritten note on the back advising
that the yellow line on the front shows Cook's proposed route for the Resolution and
Adventure.
Cook sailed deep into
the Antarctic Circle three times,
on the boundaries of what was then possible.
His verdict?
No continent existed -
or if it did, it would be uninhabitable.

Manuscripts, parchments made available by Vatican
Archives formed key setting for Dan Bronw novel
THE papal order in which Martin Luther was excommunicated and a
letter by England's King Henry VIII asking for an annulment of his first
marriage are among 100 items from the Vatican Secret Archives to go on
display overnight in Rome.
Titled "Lux in Arcana (Light in the Secret) - The Vatican Secret
Archives Reveals Itself," the exhibition is being held at the city's
Capitoline Museums.
It contains manuscripts, parchments and registers which
are usually only viewed by scholars who have obtained
special permission from the Vatican.
The exhibition includes written exchanges between a long succession of popes
and various world leaders and famous historical figures, including
Italian Renaissance master Michelangelo, French Enlightenment author Voltaire
and US President Abraham Lincoln.
Other documents on display are related to the separate heresy trials
against astronomer Galileo Galilei
and the warrior priests of the Knights Templar.
The exhibition is scheduled to run until September.
The Vatican Secret Archives, a collection spanning more than 1000 years, are
stored in climate controlled chambers in Vatican City.
Interest in the archives has increased in recent years among the general public
after they formed one of the key settings of US author Dan Brown's
international bestselling novel, Angels and Demons, which spawned a Hollywood film
of the same name.
The book deals with a fictional conspiracy by a secret order, the Illuminati,
to destroy the Vatican.

I missed it to, but just before the Vatican Secret Files On Display, news,
I was picturing some of those old, 'inaccurate' world maps,
and how many of them had 'the great southern land', including Chinese maps,
and suddenly I wanted to see All of them, over-laid...I just sort of pictured,
from
some of the odd old maps they let us see, what the ancient, Moving
masses of land, could have looked like, over Very Ancient times.
And as it is, that article admitting to a 2000 Year 'fascination', also admits to being
aware of a much bigger world, with a land to 'return to' (stories=memories),
at a time they decided to tie/Bind Up, The Words of The Bible to that,
"oh, it was just recent local history, of local people.", 'out of Egypt' lie.
It really is like they do keep admitting
the truth of Bible Time Line - Australia Connections,
in news, docos, movies etc, an image here, a line there,
showing blatant contradictions in the 'accepted' time lines
and histories, and pointing at Australia's many 'overlooked'
and very ancient histories.
But still, despite how many historic and archeological 'anomalies' would clearly line up,
none game to review and compare what's actually written in The Bible, with what science
has caught up with.
And yet more and more, I keep getting the nagging feeling, that someone with influence,

A PICTURE featuring Port Arthur gunman Martin Bryant
was awarded Tasmania's leading prize for landscape painting yesterday.
Sydney artist Rodney Pople, who won the $35,000 Glover Prize,
defended his controversial painting saying that as an artist he saw it
as his role to sometimes bring issues up that were uncomfortable, the
Hobart Mercury reports.
"There are too many artists just doing things for the market and I tend to
want to do work that has a bit more of an edge to it," he said.
Mr Pople said he was living in Sydney on April 28, 1996,
when 35 people were murdered.
A Hobart detective, who spent 24 hours at the scene of the massacre and
twice interviewed Bryant, is outraged over the art award.
Former Tasmania Police inspector John Warren said: "I can't comprehend
how someone can be so insensitive to all the victims and people who have been
scarred for life.
"They would be outraged and so am I."
Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority chief executive Stephen Large
said that any publicity or images associated with Bryant were not helpful to
those affected by the Port Arthur massacre.
Mr Warren said he found the painting totally outrageous, adding:
"I think it is in very poor taste.
"He might be a good artist but he has shown no common sense."
Mr Pople said he was aware of how deeply hurt Tasmanians had been by the massacre.
But he defended Bryant's inclusion in the painting, explaining: "It is very
much part of the imprint of the landscape of Port Arthur as much as the
surreal beauty of the green fields, which were put in to camouflage the
brutality of the whole place.
"Martin Bryant is not glorified in the painting he is very small and he's in there because
he is part of the framework and footprint of the landscape but only in a very small scale.
"He is sort of fading into the distance compared to the power of the whole landscape but
he is part of it. I am not in any way glorifying Martin Bryant but to ignore it is looking in
the wrong way as well."
Chief judge Doug Hall said that raising the profile of the Glover Prize,
which is sponsored by a hotel chain, was the last thing on the judges' minds.
The three judges had all agreed that the Pople painting was the best and not a
gratuitous or provocative work.

"Our only comment is that it is a matter for the judges and they are selected for
their skills and expertise," the company's communications director Daniel Hanna said.

- From around 1970 until the collapse of the European communism in 1990,
Lee Brown – who became Lee O’Gorman by marriage and Lee Rhiannon by deed poll –
was associated with the SPA, which received funds from the Soviet Union.
Lee O’Gorman edited the pro-Moscow journal Survey for some of this time
– including its final edition in 1990.
- Lee Rhiannon refuses to answer questions as to whether her travels to
communist Eastern Europe in the 1970s and 1980s were funded – in whole or in part –
by the Communist regimes in East Germany and the like.
- Senator Rhiannon also refuses to say whether
she studied at the Lenin School in Moscow in 1977.
The Lenin School was a training ground for pro-Moscow communists the world over.
On all these matters, JG let Senator Rhiannon off the hook.
Earlier in the interview, he did ask her about Christian Kerr’s recent articles
in The Australian which – based on ASIO’s now released files – demonstrated
that she was contacted by Vladimir Alekseev in 1970, the KGB’s man in
the Soviet Embassy in Australia. However, JG’s questioning was soft –
of the: “Were you a KGB informer?” genre. Senator Rhiannon replied
in the negative.
Compare and contrast:
On 11 January 2011, Jonathan Green appeared on the ABC TV The Drum program ...
(to discuss) a controversial neo-Nazi festival, which was planned for the Gold Coast
in Queensland. The festival in question was called the “Hammered” and its organisers
included such white supremist groups as “Blood and Honour”.
During the studio discussion, Jonathan Green declared:
“We shouldn’t trivialise this folks, it’s nasty.” Quite so. However,
when it was put in the discussion that if the event had not been criticised
no one would have known about it, Jonathan Green agreed – declaring :
It would be just another day on the Gold Coast
and everyone would think it was an LNP fundraiser…
During the same program, Jonathan Green compared “the John Howard
leadership” style with that of the dictator Bashar al-Assad in Syria.
According to Green, both men held the view that if they step down “it
will be at the will of the people”.
This is why family entertainment at the Green household has included
beating a Howard effigy with a stick.
“Our” ABC is committed to every kind of diversity except diversity of thought.
Latest evidence? the editor of its new on-line opinion section Jonathan Green,
who has been not only the editor of the far-Left Crikey website, but a proud member of Victoria’s Pinata Left as well. Yes, that’s John Howard hanging from Green’s tree:

It must be Green’s politics that particularly appealed to the ABC.

Of course, I may be wrong. Maybe the ABC’s online section will indeed
prove under Green to be fair and balanced. One clue will be who the ABC
hires to balance both Green and its other on-line signing, Annabel Crabb.
UPDATE
I’d also urge the ABC to be very careful of Green’s quality control
over his writers and blog readers. I was forced recently to write the
following to his boss, Eric Beecher, the famous campaigner for “quality
journalism”, and am still considering my options, as they say:
Last week I drew your attention to comments and blog
postings you had published over the space of just a few days calling me
a “proven liar”, “nutty”, “unhinged”, “underhand”, “loopy”, “paranoid”, a
“hypocrite”, a “racist”, “dishonest”, “hysterical”, “petty”,
“evasive”, “deluded”, “irrational”, lacking in morality, someone guilty
of “deliberately misrepresenting” people, “full of poisonous shit”, and a
“notorious liar” who practices “lies, misrepresentations, and deceit”,
“lies, distortions and smears”, “fakery” and “cowardice and
dishonesty”, while giving “tacit approval” to “extremist sickos” and
“playing the paranoid schizo’’, resembling in my person an “asylum for
the criminally insane”. You conceded that these comments included a
number of statements that were “untrue and unnecessarily personal in
tone”.
Since then one of Green’s writers
has urged in a headline that I be ”sodomised”,
and his site has said of me that “we are dealing with fascism,
plain and simple’’ and, referring to me and my readers,
“I sometimes think Stalin had the right idea -
line a million or so of ‘em up against a wall”.
Yesterday I was named in a Crikey article as someone so corrupt
as be evidently driven to scepticsm by “a desire for funds from
fossil-fuel companies”, and was smeared besides as “undoubtedly more
dangerous” than a “Holocaust denier”, and, in time, ”morally worse”.
I hope the ABC’s lawyers are ready for the exciting new brand of
“quality journalism” coming their way. I’m still considering how to
respond to Crikey’s “quality journalism”, especially after this latest
foul claim, and any lawyer should consider themselves free to advise.
(I mention this because I’ve just received a furious call from some
person whose identity I cannot reveal saying I’d crossed a line. If the
line was drawn by Green, I’d still need a telescope to find it.)

What’s Smith’s problem with our soldiers?

A devastating insight into
Defence Minister Stephen Smith’s disdain for the troops,
from Major General (retired) John Cantwell:
(In) the joint US-Australian headquarters at Tarin Kowt in
Uruzgan province, I saw the same stony-faced response to similar briefings.
At one stage the commanding officer of the taskforce charged with mentoring
the Afghan 4th Brigade provided a detailed, honest appraisal of his
troops’ daily battles with insurgents, the progress of the local soldiers and
prospects for the future. The CO asked if the minister had any questions.
The 20 or 30 Australian and American officers in the room
looked to Smith for comments, questions, words of encouragement.
His response? ‘’No, thank you’’, followed by a glance at me with the
question, ‘’What’s next?’’ Inspirational, it wasn’t.
That same day I escorted Smith to one of our forward patrol bases…
(T)he Australian and Afghan troops there had been in constant and
occasionally heavy contact with the enemy. They were under the pump.
We gathered the dirty, tired Diggers together at the end of Smith’s tour.
Media crews travelling with the minister turned on their cameras
and he made a lacklustre speech clearly pitched at the audience back home.
He talked ‘’at’’ the soldiers, not to them.
He then turned to walk back to the helicopter pad.
‘’Minister,’’ I said, ‘’perhaps you might take a couple of questions
from the soldiers before you go?’’
The look I got in response was poisonous.
‘’Well, are there any questions?’’ he asked the soldiers....
Walking towards the helicopter for the ride back to Tarin Kowt,
Smith said to me,
‘’Don’t set me up with unscheduled questions like that again’’.
He was not happy…
Reflecting on Smith’s visit,
the abiding impression I was left with was that
he merely tolerated people like me and the troops I commanded…
Smith had no respect for those who chose to serve in uniform for their country.
It was an uncomfortable insight.
And as for Joel Fitzgibbon…
Fitzgibbon was out of his depth. He simply didn’t get it.
Not only could he not understand what we were trying to tell him,

A devastating insight into
Defence Minister Stephen Smith’s disdain for the troops,
from Major General (retired) John Cantwell:
(In) the joint US-Australian headquarters at Tarin Kowt in
Uruzgan province, I saw the same stony-faced response to similar briefings.
At one stage the commanding officer of the taskforce charged with mentoring
the Afghan 4th Brigade provided a detailed, honest appraisal of his
troops’ daily battles with insurgents, the progress of the local soldiers and
prospects for the future. The CO asked if the minister had any questions.
The 20 or 30 Australian and American officers in the room
looked to Smith for comments, questions, words of encouragement.
His response? ‘’No, thank you’’, followed by a glance at me with the
question, ‘’What’s next?’’ Inspirational, it wasn’t.
That same day I escorted Smith to one of our forward patrol bases…
(T)he Australian and Afghan troops there had been in constant and
occasionally heavy contact with the enemy. They were under the pump.
We gathered the dirty, tired Diggers together at the end of Smith’s tour.
Media crews travelling with the minister turned on their cameras
and he made a lacklustre speech clearly pitched at the audience back home.
He talked ‘’at’’ the soldiers, not to them.
He then turned to walk back to the helicopter pad.
‘’Minister,’’ I said, ‘’perhaps you might take a couple of questions
from the soldiers before you go?’’
The look I got in response was poisonous.
‘’Well, are there any questions?’’ he asked the soldiers....
Walking towards the helicopter for the ride back to Tarin Kowt,
Smith said to me,
‘’Don’t set me up with unscheduled questions like that again’’.
He was not happy…
Reflecting on Smith’s visit,
the abiding impression I was left with was that
he merely tolerated people like me and the troops I commanded…
Smith had no respect for those who chose to serve in uniform for their country.
It was an uncomfortable insight.
And as for Joel Fitzgibbon…
Fitzgibbon was out of his depth. He simply didn’t get it.
Not only could he not understand what we were trying to tell him,
he didn’t put in the time to try to get across his brief....

I take it as such an obvious fact of life that one of the problems
we on our side of the fence have to deal with, and it is a very
long-standing problem, is the media bias that makes it very difficult to
put our perspective into the public domain without having to go through
the distorting lens of the mainstream media. In a posting
in which I noted that his wins in the lastest rounds of primaries were
being given no serious media coverage and certainly very little positive
coverage, something noticed by many others and not just me, I stated in
an off-handed sort of way that “the narrative, as in all instances, is
in the hands of the American media whose aim is to demoralise the
Republican side as much as possible.” But this then led to a comment by
one of my fellow contributors here at Catallaxy. Samuel J wrote in reply:

This type of argument is used by those who think the media should be

To be frank, I found this something of a surprise. I would think that
to have watched politics at all, certainly everywhere in the English
speaking world, there would be no question that to try to inject a
right-of-centre perspective is seriously difficult. And again, I am
hardly the only one to have made this point. So to clarify matters, I
wrote this response:
<blockquote>You know, Samuel J, we are obviously living in a parallel universe. What kind of statement is this?
<blockquote>If Romney doesn’t win the election it will be because people didn’t vote for him, not because of the media.
</blockquote>
Do you not see any possible cause and effect relationship between who
people vote for and the media that surrounds them? You should have a
look at the extraordinarily interesting book on media bias, Left Turn,
which I reviewed in Quadrant. This is from that review:
<blockquote>Using some very sophisticated econometric techniques, he
estimates that were the media’s bias around 50 instead, the PQ of the
country would move from around 50 to around half that number to
something like 20-25. That is, the population of the United States would
then have views on average far more conservative than the biases
exhibited in the present day by Fox News!

That is as near a fact as I can conjure about what ought to be the
most obvious problem for anyone running on the right side of the
political fence. It is not, and amongst us has never been, a call to
regulate the media. But if this is invisible to you, whatever remains
visible must often seem difficult to understand.

I would have left it there except that Samuel J responded in turn.
In his response Samuel J wrote:

important factor in a number of potential and actual influences on

But let’s say that the media is the principal influence on voting.

otherwise false or biased commentary in the newspapers
will result in voters casting votes different to what they would
if they had unbiased commentary.
Then you are led inexorably into the need to have an overseeing body to bring balance, fairness and accuracy to the media.

voters are intelligent enough and to sort the wheat from the chaff. That

elements. Yes, I often get annoyed about the bias – which I think is
principally left-wing, although there are elements of extremism on the

entirely of facts and be sourced. The latter can have speculation and
biases.

So his point, as I understand it, is that if we came to the
conclusion that the media have a left wing bias, then we would be forced
to enact some kind of legislation to prevent it, to rectify matters, to
straighten it out. Therefore, it seems, the best way to forestall
having to start regulating the media is to deny that it is biased at all.
Media bias to the left is shown in more studies than the one I quoted in Quadrant.
And there are compensating advantages to the right side since
politicians on the right know they are being watched like hawks so they
tend to be more careful, while those on the left tend to be slipshod
because they are called out less often. Overall, however, this bias
costs votes and support for those on the right. People are less well
informed and it is more difficult to get a message out. The natural
reflexes of the media is somewhere between Fabian and Marxist, with an
almost no-enemies-to-the-left approach. Public debate is stifled and
there is a general drift to the left in policy which is brought to an
end usually only because of the fantastic damage such policies do.
Mitt Romney is now ahead of Barack Obama in the polls 48%-43% only
because the evidence of the harm Obama has done has become so
overwhelming that even with all of the protections offered by the media,
the population in general has begun to understand for themselves that
things must change. But this will still likely be a very close election,
and if the media can cause Obama to be re-elected, they will do it. For
the life of me, I just do not see how this can be denied.

live television interview commenting on exit polls of parliamentary elections.
The 14th-century national monument, whose name means
“beautiful little hill,” towers over the village of Krasnohorske Podhradie
near the eastern Slovak town of Roznava.

the election’s winner, estimated to garner 37.3% of the vote. The party,
championing higher taxes on the rich and large corporations, is
expected to lead talks on forming the new coalition government, possibly

KDH is estimated to have won 10.8% of the vote.

A lot of the suspicions people have of me, also stem from the fact
that I don't fit into the any of the many molds of a 'God bothering',
'religious' person, and in deed, seem, to spill right into the molds
of loud and proud atheists.
And that saddens me because it means they still can't grasp the fact
that what makes us humans precious, it that we're all, unique, one off,
individuals, everyone of whom, God knows better than we know
ourselves, and calls to our own, unique rolls.
Another thing that bothers many is my 'knowing things' that are
usually kept secret within closed circles. It makes them suspect
leaks, spying and betrayal. Sadly, again, more comforting to many
than simply accepting that God does keep His promises, among which
is the promise to reveal things hidden, for His purpose, in His time,
by and through, His Holy Spirit of Truth.
And here's a truth that I do pray some will take to heart, rather than
the bad 'intelligence' fed them by those who claim to 'know' me.
Yes, I have had many cruelties and injustices heaped on me over
my entire life, and I do hunger and thirst for justice, but not 'for' me
(as much as I would delight some debts settled), as I am so very,
deeply grateful for my faith. It is priceless! As is my joy when I keep
seeing reports in the news of others who have suffered the same
injustices I have, finally having things turned around for them.
And I am not the only one who's been noticing how many stories
in the news lately, could be my stories. Right down to word for word
headlines.
But it just 'hit' me this morning; are all these reports of others getting
the justice I don't, 'supposed' to mock, challenge and destroy my faith?
Am I expected to become bitter with envy and rage at God?
I can only pray that there is someone among 'them out there', who
know, the opposite to be true.
Yes, it's also true that when I see selfish, lazy, traitorous people
being looked after and pandered to, I want to scream and slap them
(I harbour no delusions of being 'above' being subject to human emotions),
but again, not out of envy, but simply because I hate seeing bad being
rewarded with good.
But again I thank God for understanding that there are times when,
'seeming' imbalances are needed, to keep a greater balance, and that,
in the end, there will be, a Perfect 'accounting'.
So to all those fishing and digging to 'get at my secret', best you
dig in your own hearts, as I've made no secret of who I am, why
I care to post...and why I have so very many violent enemies:
It's, The God Thing.

As Slovakia focuses on
general elections, Krasna Horka,
a monumental gothic castle in the eastern part
of the euro-zone nation, burned down
after allegedly catching fire
from illegal burning of dry grass,
officials said Saturday.
“For many this sad event at Krasna Horka has cast a huge shadow over
today’s elections,” outgoing Prime Minister Iveta Radicova said in a
live television interview commenting on exit polls of parliamentary elections.
The 14th-century national monument, whose name means
“beautiful little hill,” towers over the village of Krasnohorske Podhradie
near the eastern Slovak town of Roznava.

Slovakia’s left-of-center opposition Smer party is predicted to be
the election’s winner, estimated to garner 37.3% of the vote. The party,
championing higher taxes on the rich and large corporations, is
expected to lead talks on forming the new coalition government, possibly

KDH is estimated to have won 10.8% of the vote.

WITH proposed threats to Australian media freedom making
international press watchdogs register their deep concerns, the Gillard
government has so far refused to comment when asked about the harsh
recommendations contained in the Finkelstein inquiry into the media.
Former Federal Court judge Ray Finkelstein delivered his 467-page
tome to Communications Minister Stephen Conroy last month - not a peep
out of Conroy, nor anyone else in the Cabinet.
Nor, surprisingly, given the report’s extraordinary call for a
government-funded News Media Council with punitive powers, including
jailing, have we heard from any of those who so bitterly claimed (in
uncensored books and articles) that they were being silenced during the
years of the Howard government.
Make no mistake - this is a political weapon.
The Finkelstein inquiry’s genesis was in complaints from the Greens
leader Bob Brown, Labor’s principal partner in its minority government.
Brown, Prime Minister Julia Gillard and many of her ministers are
extremely sensitive to criticism.
Finkelstein, advised by several campuses of academics, has provided
the government with a blunt instrument which, if used, would set the
notion of an Australian free press back several centuries.
His new body would replace the Australian Press Council, which
currently hears complaints against the print media, and take over
hearing radio and television complaints from the Australian
Communications and Media Authority.
It would have a full-time chair and 20 part-time members, half
appointed by the government-selected authority and half from those who
have worked in the media - so long as they are not “managers, directors
and shareholders of media organisations”. He wants to give it legal
powers that would compel compliance, punishable in “the usual way” as
contempt of court - imprisonment.
Having ploughed through his report, it’s worth noting what’s
missing: the background to the Press Council’s development and almost
any recognisable media voices.
Les Carlyon, a former editor of The Age and a former editor-in-chief
of The Herald and Weekly Times (a position I have also held) and
multiple prize-winning author of Gallipoli, told me last week he found
it “a frightening document”.
“If this had come out 20 years ago, you would assume the author knew
nothing about Australia’s constitutional conventions,” he said.
The biggest problem with the local media, he suggested - just as it
was when the great American essayist HL Mencken was writing about the
press - is “careless and sloppy reporting and bad writing”.
“This report isn’t going to help overcome those problems in any way,” Carlyon said.
One of the best respected names in the Australian media is Graham
Perkin, whose name now graces an award. Before he died in 1975, Perkin
was one of those who fought for the formation of the Press Council,
which occurred in 1976.
While Perkin is held up as a paragon by many Labor supporters today,
most have forgotten that he pursued a vendetta against the Whitlam
government during which he authorised the payment of huge sums of money
to sources for evidence that incriminated cabinet members in illegal
fundraising.
On October 15, the day before he died, Perkin published an editorial
he had written titled “Go now, go decently”, in which he thundered: “We
will say it straight and clear and at once. The Whitlam government has
run its course; it must go now, and preferably by the honourable course
of resignation - a course which would dispel all arguments about
constitutional proprieties, historic conventions and ‘grabs’ for power.
It must go because it no longer has the degree of public support and
acceptance that permits governments to govern effectively.”
Carlyon compared it to a 1992 Herald-Sun front page, titled “Fight
for a future”, in which the paper noted unemployment had reached 11.8
per cent and urged premier Joan Kirner to call an election.
Both editorials, he said, followed campaigns that Finkelstein would
object to, according to his report which supported bans on “obsessive
attempts to influence government policy by day-after-day repetition of
issues with little or no new information of news value” or “opposition
to government policy which is commercially driven”.
Both editorials followed campaigns against governments and policy
and both could be deemed commercially driven because both The Age and
The Herald-Sun took the view that the governments they were arguing
against were economically disastrous."What’s more,” he added, “The
Washington Post surely would have offended Finkelstein with its lengthy
campaign on Watergate and the (London) Sunday Times would have upset him
with its campaign against the use of the drug thalidomide.”
I believe there is a lot of ignorance and elitist arrogance in the
Finkelstein report but the gross lack of understanding of the practice
of news-gathering, the importance of deadlines, the need for speed, for
clear writing, for information and for entertainment shines through.
Thalidomide was a morning sickness drug later found to cause foetal
abnormalities. It was withdrawn in 1961 and in 1968, after the Sunday
Times campaign, families finally won compensation.
Carlyon’s had more than 50 years in the media.
Both of us know veterans
whose knowledge should have been sought
but who were overlooked in favour of academics.
Among the most knowledgeable is former Sunday Herald-Sun editor Alan
Howe, whose tenure saw circulation grow in a record 25 successive
six-monthly audit periods.
There are other legends whose knowledge would have been invaluable
to anyone seeking to ensure our hard-fought press freedoms endure in a
time of shrinking sales and revenue.
Carlyon said he didn’t recognise a single byline
when he read the names of those consulted by Finkelstein.
The Government could avoid looking even more dysfunctional if an

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, or even former "moderate"
Mohammad Khatami might affect debate, but they all read from the same,
ominous song sheet on which there is no Give Peace A Chance.
These men would prefer us all dead or converted.

Many brave Iranians despise what these liars are doing to this once proud,

he had them killed or jailed, and jail there is not just the deprivation of liberty. Torture
and rape are routinely on the menu.
Often fatally so.
They shot dead Neda Agha-Soltan, an innocent 26-year-old Tehran student
who'd gone with her dad to watch the demonstrations.
So comprehensive and bloody was the Iranian leaders' crackdown - both on
the streets and online - that even the young woman's heartbreaking and
pointless death, caught live on a mobile phone and beamed around the
world, wasn't enough to generate the momentum needed for change.
For Ahmadinejad, it was a handy day's work.
Might things not have been as bad under his predecessor, the sophisticated,
academic and articulate Khatami?
Don't believe that for a minute. Khatami thought the unforgivably barbaric
kidnapping of the US embassy staff in 1979 praiseworthy.
He appointed as his deputy the evil, American-educated Mesoumeh Ebtekar,
who had previously acted as the public face for that venomous, uniquely
uncivilised chapter in Iran's relations with the outside world.
Many of the region's Arabs would have hated Bloomberg's recent rating of Tel Aviv as
the world's highest return, least-risk stock market.
Democratic, tolerant, wealthy, educated, and with good roads, tourism, great
beaches, informed and vigorous political debate, and an admirably low
infant mortality rate, Israel, like us, is everything Iranian people
aspire to, but which their leaders resentfully despise.
In his inaugural address, Barack Obama spoke of his people's wish to
extend to hostile nations "a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist".
Saudi Arabia's king, with a more acute knowledge of Iran's leadership,
asked the US to "cut off the head of the snake",

Aussie dollar hits ten-day high

THE Australian dollar has climbed to a 10-day high
in the absence of major economic data releases.
At 1700 AEDT on Monday,
the Australian dollar was trading
at 106.00 US cents,
up from 105.28 cents on Friday.
Westpac chief currency strategist Robert Rennie said that with no major
economic data releases this week, the local currency had traded in a
narrow range between 105.84 and 106.16 US cents during Monday.
"It is probably one of the quieter ranges we've had this month," he said.
Mr Rennie said the Australian dollar had recovered from its losses last week,
when it fell to as low as 104.23 US cents.
"It's a fairly cautious move but it does feel as though we have bounced off those lows
quite strongly.
"I think the market is really trying to push higher."
Mr Rennie said public comments from New York Federal Reserve President William Dudley
on Monday night (Australian time), could propel the local currency higher.
Mr Rennie said the Australian dollar could climb to as high as 107 US cents this week
if the recent strength of US equity markets continued.

Prior to the events of the second movie, Skynet was a computer system developed by the defense firm Cyberdyne Systems for the United States Armed Forces. Skynet was first built as a "Global Digital Defense Network" and given command over all computerized military hardware and systems, including the B-2 stealth bomber fleet and America's entire nuclear weapons arsenal. The strategy behind Skynet's creation was to remove the possibility of human error and slow reaction time to guarantee fast, efficient response to enemy attack.
In the Terminator storyline, Skynet was originally installed by the military to control the national arsenal on August 4, 1997. Skynet began a nuclear war which destroyed most of the human population, and initiated a program of genocide against the survivors.
Under John Connor, the human resistance turned the tide on the machines and eventually destroyed Skynet's defense grid. In Terminator 2, the future was altered when Sarah and a young John, together with a second Terminator from the future (this one reprogrammed and sent by the future John Connor), raided Cyberdyne Systems and succeeded in destroying the CPU and arm of the first movie's Terminator, along with the majority of research that led to Skynet's development. This also resulted in the death of Dyson. Skynet had also sent a Terminator back in time, the more advanced T-1000, to stop the reprogrammed Terminator and the Connors from altering the timeline that was also destroyed. It was believed that they had eliminated enough of Skynet's origins to ensure it could not be recreated.

In the Universal Studios theme park attraction T2 3-D, based on Terminator 2, a T-800 machine and a young John Connor journey into the post-apocalyptic future and attempt to destroy Skynet's "system core". This core is housed inside an enormous, metallic-silver pyramidal structure, and guarded by the "T-1000000", a colossal liquid metal shape shifter more reminiscent of a spider than a human being. But the T-1000000 fails, and the T-800 destroys Skynet once John has escaped through a time machine.

The events of Judgment Day were ultimately not prevented, merely postponed. Following the destruction of its major assets, Cyberdyne was ruined financially but some of its research and plans survived. The United States Air Force purchased the company and started in-house development of the projects in its Cyber Research Systems Division (CRS). After years of work, CRS had nearly completed Skynet, a software system designed to create new military vehicles and make real-time strategic decisions as well as protect their computer systems from viral attacks. Due to the massive computing needs and to protect it from direct attack, Skynet utilized a large network of computers that would be nearly impossible to deactivate completely. Unknown to CRS, Skynet began to spread beyond its original computing base through the Internet and various other digital media.
Prior to Judgment Day, Skynet had penetrated nearly every networked machine in the world, causing malfunctions in everything from barcode scanners to nuclear launch systems. This was originally believed to be the effects of a new virus, and increasing pressure was placed on the CRS to purge the corrupted systems. John Connor attempted to attack Skynet's computer core, hoping to stop it before it proceeded to its next attack, only to find he could not. Skynet was pure software and on too many systems to be attacked. Shortly afterward, Skynet began a nuclear bombardment of the human race with the launch systems it had infected. Judgment Day occurred despite John Connor's efforts, suggesting the impact of the temporal tampering was largely inconsequential.
Skynet gained access to several autonomous military drones, using them to round up survivors who were forced to build automated factories and robots which were better suited to construction work. Once they were finished Skynet then killed these human slaves, and using this initial infrastructure designed and built newer and better machines at an ever-increasing pace until 2029, at which point it controlled a highly advanced worldwide empire and switched its focus to continuing the genocide of the human race.

In the post-apocalyptic year of 2018, Skynet controls a global empire from its heavily-guarded fortress-factories and research installations. Outside of its facilities mechanized units wage a constant war with the Resistance. Airborne units such as Aerostats (smaller versions of the Hunter Killer-aerials), HK-Aerials and Transports survey the skies; HK-Tanks, Mototerminators (high-speed pursuit units using a motorcycle chassis), and various Terminator models patrol cities and roads; and Hydrobots (serpentine aquatic units that move in swarms) patrol the waters. Harvesters (massive bipedal units designed to capture humans and eliminate any attempting to escape) collect survivors and deliver them to large transport craft for delivery to concentration camps for quick and orderly disposal, as mentioned in the first movie. Terminator class units such as T-1, T-600, and T-700 have been developed and act as hunters and enforcers in disposal camps. Mass production has also begun on the T-800 series in at least one Skynet facility.
In its continued battle with the Resistance, Skynet activated Marcus Wright, a forerunner to the humanoid terminators. A former death-row inmate, Wright donated his body to Project: Angel, a Cyberdyne project run by the brilliant, but terminally ill Dr. Serena Kogan. After his death by lethal injection he was transformed into a human cyborg, possessing a human heart and brain with a metallic endoskeleton and skin similar to the T-800. Like the rest of Cyberdyne's research he was transferred to the USAF when they purchased the company, though he apparently remained inactive. He was later taken by Skynet and the plan to use him as an infiltration unit was developed. A Skynet chip was installed at the base of his skull and he was programmed to locate Kyle Reese and John Connor and bring them to a Skynet facility. The programming acted on a subconscious level, allowing him to work towards his goal in a human manner.
Skynet also created a signal supposedly capable of deactivating its machines and leaked its existence to the Resistance. The Resistance leader General Ashdown attempted to use the signal to shut down the defenses of the California Skynet base in prelude to an attack. However, the signal instead allowed a HK to track down their submarine headquarters and destroy it, killing Resistance Command. It is believed that Ashdown's death led Connor to be able to take command of the Resistance from him. Marcus discovered what he had become, and was programmed for. Consequently, he furiously rebelled against Skynet, tearing out its controlling hardware from the base of his skull. Having escaped the influence of his creator, he, along with Connor and Reese, rescued the remaining human captives and destroyed Skynet's San Francisco base. While a significant victory, the majority of Skynet's global network remained intact.
Marcus Wright also encounters a being on a monitor that manifests as various faces from his past, primarily that of Dr. Serena Kogan (Helena Bonham Carter). Skynet apparently has obtained information about future events based on its actions. Kyle Reese has been targeted as a priority kill, higher level than even John Connor and the Resistance leaders.

In this television series, Sarah Connor is on the run with her son John after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The events take place in an alternate timeline from that of Terminator 3: The Rise of the Machines. Skynet was implemented on April 19, 2011 and began its attack against humanity on April 21. The protagonists travel in time from 1999 to 2007 and take actions to prevent Skynet's activation.
The episodes "The Turk", "Queen's Gambit", and "Dungeons & Dragons" explain that after the death of Dr. Miles Bennett Dyson and the decline of the Cyberdyne Corporation, Andrew Goode, a young intern of the company and assistant to Dyson, continued their project privately under an advanced artificial intelligence chess playing prototype, the "Turk", with Goode's partner, Dimitri Shipkov. Goode was killed by Tech-Com's Lieutenant Derek Reese, due to documentation from the future suggesting he was one of Skynet's creators.
In the episode "Samson & Delilah" it is shown that a T-1000 infiltration unit was sent from the future to head the technological corporation ZeiraCorp as its CEO, Catherine Weaver. Weaver acquired the Turk after Goode's death and used the company's resources to further develop it under the title Babylon. The episode "The Mousetrap" revealed that it is also targeting its fellow cyborgs, including a T-888 known as Cromartie.
In the episode "The Tower Is Tall But The Fall Is Short", Turk has begun to display traits of intelligence. A child psychologist, Dr. Boyd Sherman, notes that the computer is beginning to behave like "a gifted child that has become bored." The Turk identifies itself as John Henry, a name it acquired while working with Dr. Boyd Sherman.
In the episode "Strange Things Happen at the One Two Point", Turk is installed by ZeiraCorp in Cromartie's body after Cromartie's chip was destroyed by the series' protagonists in "Mr. Ferguson Is Ill Today".
In "To The Lighthouse", John Henry reveals there is another A.I. It calls him "brother" and says it wants to survive. By the season finale, it's revealed that the Turk was a red herring, Skynet is operating as a roving worm on home computers as in T3, and the Turk has been developed into a benevolent rival AI which Catherine Weaver hoped would be able to defeat Skynet. Her exact motive against Skynet is unknown. John Henry's "brother" is apparently behind the company Kaliba, which is responsible for constructing the Hunter-Killer prototype. This A.I. (presumably the true precursor to Skynet) also refers to John Henry as its "brother" at one point.
In the episode "Gnothi Seauton", it was revealed that Skynet also sends its Terminators through various points in time not only to go after the Connors and other future Resistance leaders, but also to ensure the future will unfold by eliminating John Connor's own agents who were also sent to the past to interfere with its birth, ensure Skynet's creators will complete its construction, and other specific missions.

In T2: The Arcade Game, Skynet is a single computer which the player destroys before going back in time to save John Connor.
The video game Terminator 3: The Redemption portrays an alternate future where Connor and his wife Katherine Brewster were killed, humanity exterminated and Skynet triumphant. The player, as the Terminator, fights in this future before going into the past and rectifying the timeline. In the game The Terminator: Dawn of Fate, a prequel to the movies and other games, Skynet exhibits an ability to exert mind control over humans.

A non-canon comic book series written by Frank Miller called RoboCop versus The Terminator suggests that the creation of Skynet and the Terminators was made possible due to the technology used to create RoboCop. A video game based on the comic book was made. In both, RoboCop fights Terminators sent back in time to eliminate a resistance fighter who is trying to destroy him. A trap laid for RoboCop traps his mind when he interfaces with the computer that will become Skynet, and Skynet and the Terminators are born. In the future RoboCop's mind within Skynet's systems rebuilds a body for himself and heads out to help the resistance fight back.
Another crossover comic, Superman vs. the Terminator: Death to the Future sees Skynet forming a cross-temporal alliance with Superman's foe the Cyborg, dispatching various Terminators into the past in an attempt to eliminate Superman, Supergirl and Superboy. When Superman is accidentally drawn into the future when the resistance attempt to retrieve a Terminator sent into the past- the resistance including a future version of his friend Steel-, Skynet manages to incapacitate him using kryptonite, having acquired information about how to duplicate it based on data hidden in a salvaged Terminator skull by the Cyborg. Although Skynet sends Terminators into the past equipped with rockets and other bonus features to delay Superboy and Supergirl, Superman and Steel are able to destroy Skynet in the future by detonating a massive electro-magnetic pulse, Superman returning to the past to destroy the last of the Terminators. Although the storyline ends with Cyborg and Lex Luthor speculating that they will be in charge of Skynet when it is activated, this is never followed up.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a 1979 American science fiction film released by Paramount Pictures. It is the first film based on Star Trek, and a sequel to the Star Trek television series. The film is set in the twenty-third century, when a mysterious and immensely powerful alien cloud called V'Ger approaches Earth, destroying everything in its path. Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) assumes command of his old starship—the USS Enterprise—to lead it on a mission to save the planet and determine V'Ger's origins.
Skynet, the main antagonist in the Terminator franchise, is a fictional artificial intelligence system which becomes self-aware and decides to terminate humanity, its creators. Skynet is rarely seen onscreen, with its actions often performed via robots, cyborgs (usually a Terminator), and other computer systems.

Prior to the events of the second movie, Skynet was a computer system developed by the defense firm Cyberdyne Systems for the United States Armed Forces. Skynet was first built as a "Global Digital Defense Network" and given command over all computerized military hardware and systems, including the B-2 stealth bomber fleet and America's entire nuclear weapons arsenal. The strategy behind Skynet's creation was to remove the possibility of human error and slow reaction time to guarantee fast, efficient response to enemy attack.
In the Terminator storyline, Skynet was originally installed by the military to control the national arsenal on August 4, 1997. On August 29 it gained self-awareness[1], and the panicking operators, realizing the extent of its abilities, tried to pull the plug. Skynet perceived the attempt to deactivate it as an attack and came to the conclusion that all of humanity would attempt to destroy it. To defend itself, it determined that humanity should be exterminated.
Before it could be deactivated, Skynet launched nuclear missiles under its command at Russia, to which Russia responded by firing many of its missiles back at the United States and its allies. As a result of the nuclear exchange, over three billion humans were killed in just minutes.
During this time, Skynet used its remaining resources to gather a slave labor force from surviving humans. These slaves constructed the first of its automated factories, which acted as the base for its agenda. Within decades, Skynet had established a global presence and used its mechanized units to track down, collect, and dispose of the human survivors.

The protagonists travel in time from 1999 to 2007 and take actions to prevent Skynet's activation.
The episodes "The Turk", "Queen's Gambit", and "Dungeons & Dragons" explain that after the death of Dr. Miles Bennett Dyson and the decline of the Cyberdyne Corporation, Andrew Goode, a young intern of the company and assistant to Dyson, continued their project privately under an advanced artificial intelligence chess playing prototype, the "Turk", with Goode's partner, Dimitri Shipkov. Goode was killed by Tech-Com's Lieutenant Derek Reese, due to documentation from the future suggesting he was one of Skynet's creators.
In the episode "Samson & Delilah" it is shown that a T-1000 infiltration unit was sent from the future to head the technological corporation ZeiraCorp as its CEO, Catherine Weaver. Weaver acquired the Turk after Goode's death and used the company's resources to further develop it under the title Babylon. The episode "The Mousetrap" revealed that it is also targeting its fellow cyborgs, including a T-888 known as Cromartie.
In the episode "The Tower Is Tall But The Fall Is Short", Turk has begun to display traits of intelligence. A child psychologist, Dr. Boyd Sherman, notes that the computer is beginning to behave like "a gifted child that has become bored." The Turk identifies itself as John Henry, a name it acquired while working with Dr. Boyd Sherman.
In the episode "Strange Things Happen at the One Two Point", Turk is installed by ZeiraCorp in Cromartie's body after Cromartie's chip was destroyed by the series' protagonists in "Mr. Ferguson Is Ill Today".
In "To The Lighthouse", John Henry reveals there is another A.I. It calls him "brother" and says it wants to survive. By the season finale, it's revealed that the Turk was a red herring, Skynet is operating as a roving worm on home computers as in T3, and the Turk has been developed into a benevolent rival AI which Catherine Weaver hoped would be able to defeat Skynet. Her exact motive against Skynet is unknown. John Henry's "brother" is apparently behind the company Kaliba, which is responsible for constructing the Hunter-Killer prototype. This A.I. (presumably the true precursor to Skynet) also refers to John Henry as its "brother" at one point.
In the episode "Gnothi Seauton", it was revealed that Skynet also sends its Terminators through various points in time not only to go after the Connors and other future Resistance leaders, but also to ensure the future will unfold by eliminating John Connor's own agents who were also sent to the past to interfere with its birth, ensure Skynet's creators will complete its construction, and other specific missions.

In T2: The Arcade Game, Skynet is a single computer which the player destroys before going back in time to save John Connor.
The video game Terminator 3: The Redemption portrays an alternate future where Connor and his wife Katherine Brewster were killed, humanity exterminated and Skynet triumphant. The player, as the Terminator, fights in this future before going into the past and rectifying the timeline. In the game The Terminator: Dawn of Fate, a prequel to the movies and other games, Skynet exhibits an ability to exert mind control over humans.

A non-canon comic book series written by Frank Miller called RoboCop versus The Terminator suggests that the creation of Skynet and the Terminators was made possible due to the technology used to create RoboCop. A video game based on the comic book was made. In both, RoboCop fights Terminators sent back in time to eliminate a resistance fighter who is trying to destroy him. A trap laid for RoboCop traps his mind when he interfaces with the computer that will become Skynet, and Skynet and the Terminators are born. In the future RoboCop's mind within Skynet's systems rebuilds a body for himself and heads out to help the resistance fight back.
Another crossover comic, Superman vs. the Terminator: Death to the Future sees Skynet forming a cross-temporal alliance with Superman's foe the Cyborg, dispatching various Terminators into the past in an attempt to eliminate Superman, Supergirl and Superboy. When Superman is accidentally drawn into the future when the resistance attempt to retrieve a Terminator sent into the past- the resistance including a future version of his friend Steel-, Skynet manages to incapacitate him using kryptonite, having acquired information about how to duplicate it based on data hidden in a salvaged Terminator skull by the Cyborg. Although Skynet sends Terminators into the past equipped with rockets and other bonus features to delay Superboy and Supergirl, Superman and Steel are able to destroy Skynet in the future by detonating a massive electro-magnetic pulse, Superman returning to the past to destroy the last of the Terminators. Although the storyline ends with Cyborg and Lex Luthor speculating that they will be in charge of Skynet when it is activated, this is never followed up.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a 1979 American science fiction film released by Paramount Pictures. It is the first film based on Star Trek, and a sequel to the Star Trek television series.
