Listening online to the ocean floor
Satellite photos used to be for military eyes
only, but Google Earth changed all that. Now something similar is
happening to the ocean depths, with any web user able to listen in and
"surf the sea floor" - and the US Navy is not happy.

"The cable is going underneath here," says Benoit
Pirenne, standing at the water's edge on Canada's Vancouver Island.
"It's going out 500 miles (800km) in a big loop in the ocean, coming
back in the same place."
The Vancouver cable connects a network of scientific
instruments on the floor of the north Pacific, some as deep as 1.5 miles
(2.5km).
Set up by Pirenne and his colleagues at the University of
Victoria, and called Neptune Canada, they continuously monitor the
marine environment.

The scientists are harvesting large amounts of information,
including water pressure readings that help them better understand the
movement of tsunamis through oceans, which they hope will lead to more
accurate warning systems.
But they are also listening.
Pressure-sensitive microphones pick up the live sounds of
everything from whales and shipping to seismic activity and the movement
of tectonic plates, and this audio is shared with scientists all over
the world.
It's also now available to anyone else with an internet connection.
Ocean 'ears'
"This is like big ears placed on the bottom of the ocean,"
says Michel Andre, a bioacoustics expert at the Technical University of
Catalonia in Barcelona, as he listens to the audio being streamed live
from Vancouver.

Andre's passion is the study of noise in the ocean, both
natural and man-made, and how it affects marine life including whales
and dolphins.
"Sound travels five times faster through water than through
air, and in the ocean it can travel for thousands of miles," he says.
To help the non-scientific community appreciate just how noisy the oceans have become, he's launched a website called listentothedeep.com which streams the live sounds from Vancouver, and 14 other ocean floor "observatories" around the world.
"Here you can hear the noise coming from a ship," says Andre as he clicks on a green dot in the Mediterranean.
The ship is on the surface of the sea, but its monotonous
engine sound eerily dominates the soundscape more than a mile below.
Software developed by Andre's team can identify a range of different sounds.

"These coloured bars here represent the sound of sperm whales," he says.
"And if you click here, in the sound library, this is the noise of the Japanese earthquake."

On Andre's site, the sound has been sped up to make it
audible to the human ear. It's a growing deep rumble, and a chilling
experience for anyone who followed the news of the devastating tsunami
that struck the Japanese mainland.
National security
For decades, the sounds of the deep sea were considered highly sensitive military data.
During the Cold War, the US Navy set up a network of
underwater microphones in many parts of the world to track Soviet
submarines.
Now the US Navy says it's not too concerned about friendly
civilian scientists listening in, but it is nervous about the opening up
of real time ocean sound to the general public.

"It's a region where we have naval operations," says US Navy
oceanographer Robert Winokur, referring to the area off Vancouver
monitored by the scientists from Neptune Canada.
Beneath the surface
that part of the ocean poses a threat to US national security, he says,
because someone - he won't say who - might use that information to work
out the type and location of US naval vessels.
To reduce that threat, the US and Canadian navies have struck
a deal with the scientists that effectively allows them to censor the
sound of naval operations.
"Rather than it being sent to the internet in real time, we
divert it to a naval facility where the data are screened, and then
returned as soon as possible to the University of Victoria," says
Winokur.
In other words, the sound is scrubbed to remove the noise of naval vessels.
Widening the net
The US Navy says it hopes to work out similar arrangements with other ocean monitoring projects elsewhere in the world.
But Cornell University ocean acoustics expert Christopher Clark doubts it will succeed.
"The strategy they're using with Neptune (the Vancouver project) is a dead end," he says.
Clark insists the US Navy doesn't own the ocean acoustic
environment and should accept that what was once military technology is
now in the hands of civilians.

The number of observatories on Michel Andre's website is
growing. The site currently links to listening networks only in the
northern hemisphere.
Soon 11 more will be added, connecting to microphones in the South Pacific, South Atlantic and the southern Indian Ocean.
That will open up an even larger swathe of the ocean deep to our ears.

In recent months China's airforce and navy have rolled out new hardware

At the Pentagon recently, US President Barack Obama announced
deep cuts to the US military and set out a shift in attention towards
the Asia-Pacific region, in a thinly-veiled message to China.
Despite a narrative of peaceful intent, China's leaders have
struggled to reassure the US over the direction of the People's
Liberation Army (PLA). Both countries admit that their military
dialogue falls well behind other aspects of the relationship.
So the shift has brought renewed scrutiny of the PLA's latest capabilities against US dominance in the Pacific.
In recent years the PLA has demonstrated impressive new
capabilities at sea and in space, aimed at showcasing the success of its
modernisation effort.
The obvious message is to deliver a powerful warning if Taiwan were to declare formal independence.
But Pentagon planners are now concerned that the Taiwan
contingency has been eclipsed by China's broader maritime territorial
claims and demands for more international space to protect the arteries
feeding China's growth.
'Unrestricted warfare'
China is developing a range of capabilities linked to the
space and cyber domain in order to sidestep the overwhelming might of
the US military in the Pacific region. The PLA calls this fighting
"local wars under informationised conditions".
China took the first step towards a space station when it launched the Tiangong 1 module
China recognised almost two decades ago that in the mid-term
the PLA could be no match for US conventional forces. So it began
working on what was dubbed "unrestricted warfare" - combining multiple
methods to defeat a superior opponent.
At the same time party leaders launched adventurous civilian
acquisition projects in the high-tech domain to increase Chinese
competitiveness and to boost indigenous production capabilities.
The PLA has been running military projects mirroring these
civilian acquisition ventures. Sometimes involving dual-use
technologies, the military and civilian strands have often been
indistinguishable.
China's space programme is a case in point. The recent
successful docking manoeuvre between a Shenzhou module and the Tiangong
Space station is as much a triumph for the PLA as it is for China's
civilian space agency.
Space theatre
Should the US ever intervene in a cross-strait clash or
challenge China's maritime claims, Beijing would employ a pre-emptive
"sea denial" strategy alongside its conventional operations - preventing
US battle carrier groups operating in or near its claimed territorial
waters.
Its submarine-launched ballistic and cruise missiles are now a
lethal force. China's long-range nuclear weapons systems have also
undergone significant upgrades and its strategic rocket force, the
Second Artillery Corps, is very much the pride of the PLA.
One of the most pressing concerns for the US navy is the
threat posed by a "carrier killer" anti-ship missile with enhanced
targeting capabilities facilitated from space. China very recently
launched its own Beidou Positioning System, challenging the monopoly of
the US Global Positioning System (GPS).
One of the PLA's most sensitive advances has been the secret
deployment and testing of advanced anti-satellite (ASAT) and Anti
Ballistic Missile (ABM) weapons systems.
Two years ago, China successfully intercepted one of its own
ballistic missiles as it streaked through space. This test coincided
with the Pentagon's sale of Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) Patriot
systems to Taiwan.
Some experts believe a Chinese ASAT campaign against a
careful selected group of US satellites could have catastrophic effect
on the US military.
This capability, combined with the potential for China to
develop its own Ballistic Missile Defence umbrella, suggests that the
space domain will be a new theatre for US-China rivalry.
Chinese ASAT capabilities are not exclusively reserved for
"kill vehicles", like the one which obliterated an ageing Chinese
weather satellite in 2007.
It is now believed that the successful 2007 "kill" was in
fact the third test in a series. Previous tests had demonstrated an
ability to manoeuvre in proximity to targeted satellites.
This would suggest that China has experimented with
techniques which could be used for "space mining", where mines or
mini-satellites armed with jamming technologies could be placed within
the orbits of an opponent's spacecraft.
Carrier group
In addition to its "sea denial" and space warfare strategies, China is also expanding its conventional capabilities.
The PLA Air Force in recent years has extended its ability
for offshore operations, enhancing an offensive capability. It is
planning an overhaul of its ageing fleet with the deployment of over
3,000 new aircraft.
China first aircraft carrier began sea trials in 2011
For the most part China has relied on copying Russian fighter
technology. However, the roll-out of the Chengdu J-20 Stealth fighter
prototype raised eyebrows last year, carefully timed to coincide with a
visit by the US defence secretary.
There have been some very significant developments in the
deployment of Chinese submarines in recent years. Beijing possesses 10
Russian-built ultra-quiet Kilo class submarines possibly armed with
200km-range anti-ship cruise missiles.
Since 2006, when a Chinese submarine surfaced undetected
within torpedo range of the US aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, China's
submarine force has regularly marauded the US Navy and its allies in the
Pacific.
It is thought that China plans to build three aircraft
carrier battle groups, each armed with 40 fighters, up to eight
warships, three nuclear-powered attack submarines and a number of
support vessels. The PLA Navy's retrofitted Varyag carrier, currently
under sea-trials, will serve as a training platform.
Even if the aircraft carrier would likely be a prestige piece
and more directed at Chinese domestic pride, the prospect of a Chinese
aircraft carrier will certainly cause ripples for the broader East Asian
naval balance.
Uncertain factors
While much attention has been paid to the breakneck speed of
Chinese military modernisation over the last decade, the events of 9/11
and the subsequent campaigns in the Middle East and Afghanistan provided
a window of opportunity for China to accelerate development.
In some cases there may have been, quite literally, windfalls
for the PLA. There is speculation that China acquired undamaged
Tomohawk cruise missile components in the early stages of the
Afghanistan campaign a decade ago.
When US Special Forces failed to completely destroy one of
their stealth helicopters during Operation Geronimo, Pakistan's military
may have allowed PLA counterparts to inspect the tail rotor.
The PLA must be congratulating itself on the impressive array
of weaponry which has tilted the balance in the Taiwan Strait in its
favour.
China's new-found capabilities combined with the opaque
nature of its military modernisation create a formula for mistrust with
the US.
There are perhaps three factors for uncertainty. Firstly, the
Chinese military's confidence in its new equipment could lead to an
overestimation of its capability as an emerging great power.
Secondly, the Chinese leadership could underestimate its
ability to control an unexpected escalation of hostilities in the
Pacific.
Finally, the domestic political factor - the PLA's external
behaviour could become a reaction to internal nationalistic sentiment,
instability or faction fighting as Beijing prepares for the fifth
generation leadership handover this year.

Mrs Bryce is believed to be one of the sixty five individuals mentioned in
the Rofe Audit. This report was prepared by David Rofe QC a leading Sydney
barrister for Kevin Lindeberg. Mr Rudd is also one of the sixty five

Ian Hanke mocks the hysteria of the Left over Gina Rinehart’s purchase of Fairfax shares -
a hysteria illustrating the maxim that while conservatives think their
opponents are merely wrong, the Left think theirs are evil:

Among the cadres of sometimes complacent and compliant journalists, she

It seems that by taking a substantial shareholding in Fairfax Media

Australian Financial Review), this one person is going to tear down
society - and the media will be a tool, putty in her hands, to do just

Rinehart’s views, according to people who don’t know her, are on the
‘’far right of the political spectrum’’, as academic and former Greens
candidate Clive Hamilton told readers of this page yesterday. Rinehart
has been vilified because she appears not to share the left’s concerns
about climate change and because she is advocating turning the north of
Australia into a special economic zone with tax breaks.
Nothing new in that; it has been advocated for years.
Apparently she knows the businessman Hugh Morgan, who was instrumental
in setting up the H. R. Nicholls Society, which advocates workplace
relations reform. And Morgan, we are told, is also close to the - shock,
horror - Institute of Public Affairs, which supports liberalism and a
free market.
It is clear Rinehart must be a fiend, albeit via association....
In 2010 she bought a substantial stake in Channel Ten. It is alleged,
without much evidence, she was responsible for The Bolt Report, the show
hosted by controversial columnist Andrew Bolt - and, of course, Bolt is
anathema to the left because he refuses to bow to their orthodoxy.
Yet let us just say, for the sake of argument, that Rinehart was indeed
responsible for the commissioning of The Bolt Report. That program, with
its ‘’unorthodox view’’, consistently out-rates Ten’s more traditional
Meet the Press. People seem to like watching The Bolt Report, where
alternative views are given an airing. Can’t have that, can we?…
Yet some on the left seem to believe her views should preclude Rinehart
from sitting on the Fairfax board… What is wrong with a person with an
alternative view of the world to that of the self-appointed guardians of
the media sitting on the board of a media company?

The more that Age journalists particularly rail against
Rinehart, the more they advertise their paper’s most fatal weakness - a
fierce hostility to the airing of ideas other than their
unrepresentative own. Journalistically, that’s a crime. Commercially
it’s a disaster for two reasons. First, papers are far livelier if they
provoke and are open to debates. Second, papers which circulate heavily
in Liberal-voting electorates should not present an almost exclusive
diet of the Left talking to the Left.
But here I am, suggesting ways to save Fairfax newspapers, which compete with my employer’s. I should shut up and let them die…

name of virtue. Luckily someone at the paper still has some standards.

And this is branded on the website - no kidding - as “Independent
Journalism for Independent Minds”. Do these wordsmiths even understand
the meaning of the word “independent”?
That Wood should be able to stock such a publication with so many
willing journalists from the ABC and Fairfax says so much about the
leaning of those two media organisations, and what the real objection to
Rinehart is.
Warming sceptic wants a newspaper: evil and to be fought. Warming

Ian Hanke mocks the hysteria of the Left over Gina Rinehart’s purchase of Fairfax shares -
a hysteria illustrating the maxim that while conservatives think their
opponents are merely wrong, the Left think theirs are evil:

appears to be someone whose mere name spreads alarm throughout the left.
Among the cadres of sometimes complacent and compliant journalists, she
is deemed to be a right-wing ogre.
It seems that by taking a substantial shareholding in Fairfax Media
(which owns this newspaper as well as The Sydney Morning Herald and The
Australian Financial Review), this one person is going to tear down
society - and the media will be a tool, putty in her hands, to do just
that....
Rinehart’s views, according to people who don’t know her, are on the
‘’far right of the political spectrum’’, as academic and former Greens
candidate Clive Hamilton told readers of this page yesterday. Rinehart
has been vilified because she appears not to share the left’s concerns
about climate change and because she is advocating turning the north of
Australia into a special economic zone with tax breaks.
Nothing new in that; it has been advocated for years.
Apparently she knows the businessman Hugh Morgan, who was instrumental
in setting up the H. R. Nicholls Society, which advocates workplace
relations reform. And Morgan, we are told, is also close to the - shock,
horror - Institute of Public Affairs, which supports liberalism and a
free market.
It is clear Rinehart must be a fiend, albeit via association....
In 2010 she bought a substantial stake in Channel Ten. It is alleged,
without much evidence, she was responsible for The Bolt Report, the show
hosted by controversial columnist Andrew Bolt - and, of course, Bolt is
anathema to the left because he refuses to bow to their orthodoxy.
Yet let us just say, for the sake of argument, that Rinehart was indeed
responsible for the commissioning of The Bolt Report. That program, with
its ‘’unorthodox view’’, consistently out-rates Ten’s more traditional
Meet the Press. People seem to like watching The Bolt Report, where
alternative views are given an airing. Can’t have that, can we?…
Yet some on the left seem to believe her views should preclude Rinehart
from sitting on the Fairfax board… What is wrong with a person with an
alternative view of the world to that of the self-appointed guardians of
the media sitting on the board of a media company?

The more that Age journalists particularly rail against
Rinehart, the more they advertise their paper’s most fatal weakness - a
fierce hostility to the airing of ideas other than their
unrepresentative own. Journalistically, that’s a crime. Commercially
it’s a disaster for two reasons. First, papers are far livelier if they
provoke and are open to debates. Second, papers which circulate heavily
in Liberal-voting electorates should not present an almost exclusive
diet of the Left talking to the Left.
But here I am, suggesting ways to save Fairfax newspapers, which compete with my employer’s. I should shut up and let them die…

A particularly vicious, misleading and sexist photo montage on the Sydney Morning Herald website - comparing Rinehart to Victoria Beckham, and falsely insinuating Rinehart thought herself such a clotheshorse, too - has been replaced.
It’s astonishing what some people feel entitled to do to others in the
name of virtue. Luckily someone at the paper still has some standards.

with not a single known conservative among them. There’s Ellen Fanning,
for instance, Mike Bowers, Stephen Crittenden, Mike Seccombe and more -
none likely to buck the Wood view of the world, which this publication
will almost certainly promote.
And this is branded on the website - no kidding - as “Independent
Journalism for Independent Minds”. Do these wordsmiths even understand
the meaning of the word “independent”?
That Wood should be able to stock such a publication with so many
willing journalists from the ABC and Fairfax says so much about the
leaning of those two media organisations, and what the real objection to
Rinehart is.
Warming sceptic wants a newspaper: evil and to be fought. Warming
alarmist wants a newspaper: terrific, and where do we sign up?

Senator Arthur Sinodinos, formerly John Howard’s chief of staff,
has checked the ASIO files on Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon
and compared it with what Rhiannon claims.
And in a powerful speech to the Senate, he says:

Senator Rhiannon, if you were not a neo-Stalinist, what were you? Are
the Greens just another front for you and your Eastern bloc claque? You
owe the Senate and the people of New South Wales and Australia a full
and frank explanation of all these matters.

Read on for Sinodinos’s speech:
Senator SINODINOS (New South Wales) (13:00): I
rise on a matter of public interest to do with my colleague Senator
Rhiannon and ASIO. In March 2010, in two speeches to the New South Wales
Legislative Council, the then Lee Rhiannon sought to discredit ASIO’s
surveillance of and files on her, claiming that they were riddled with
errors. Shortly afterwards, the questionable claims in her speeches were
reported as fact in a breathless newspaper article entitled ‘ASIO
spooks spied on little girls’. Thus Lee Rhiannon, who at the time was
vying for the Senate, was attempting to inoculate against objective
coverage of her 800-page ASIO file which had just been released by the
National Archives. In a blog on 3 September 2010 entitled ‘Responding to
attacks on my family and political background’, the now Senator
Rhiannon revisited the same theme while giving rose tinted accounts of
her early activism.
I have looked at Lee Brown, aka Gorman, aka Rhiannon’s ASIO files and I
must say I am impressed with their thoroughness and the obvious skill
involved in their compilation. While ASIO’s intelligence was not
perfect, as is to be expected, it was much, much better than Senator
Rhiannon has made out. Senator Rhiannon claims that ASIO’s ‘biggest
howler’ was ‘the assertion that I studied motor mechanics at UNSW’. This
is disingenuous. In fact, the ASIO report on the Young Socialist
League’s Marxist coaching seminar states that, ‘Lee Brown made the
general remark that she is studying motor mechanics at the University of
New South Wales, where she is currently employed as a lecturer’. ASIO
were not making that assertion; it was ASIO reporting Lee Brown’s own
words, a significant distinction I would have thought, since elsewhere
ASIO accurately record her university studies.
Recently it was disclosed that on 19 January 1970, as an 18-year-old
embarking on a voyage to the UK on the Russian vessel Shota Rustaveli,
Lee Brown was appointed to meet one Vladimir Alekseev from the Soviet
Embassy in cabin 190 on J-deck, where he would wait for her. An ASIO
intelligence file reveals that, when arranging this meeting, Alekseev
said that he was calling on behalf of one Ivan Stenin. An ASIO telephone
intercept reveals that the previous month Stenin had contacted
Rhiannon’s father who was intending to travel abroad before his daughter
by air to England, Switzerland and Russia. We now know of ASIO’s
conclusion that Stenin was a senior intelligence officer, and that many
believe that Vladimir Alekseev was the KGB station chief or ‘rezident’
at the Soviet Embassy in Canberra.
It is therefore timely to examine Senator Rhiannon’s ASIO file and to
test some of her other claims. In her 2010 blog she claimed that there
was no expectation she would follow in her parents’ political footsteps.
But in truth Senator Rhiannon was an in-vitro communist. According to
Mark Aarons, he and Lee Brown were ‘red-diaper babies’, a term by which
the Communist Party of Australia members affectionately referred to the
children of communists destined to inherit their parents’ political
genes. Rhiannon has perpetuated the line that ASIO began spying on her
when she was seven, because an ASIO precis-history of her activity has a
one-line record of her at a Tribune picnic in 1958. I think we can
assume that ASIO at the time was more interested in Rhiannon’s parents
and other communists than they were in Lee, precocious though she may
have been.
In fact, the first item in Senator Rhiannon’s ASIO file is a clipping
from an April 1955 edition of the CPA’s Tribune headlined ‘Kiddies’ big
part in May Day’, showing three-year-old ‘little Lee Brown’ dabbling at a
sign saying, ‘For me—Ban that H-bomb’ in preparation for the upcoming
May Day march. I am sure that ‘little Lee’ was oblivious to the Soviet
Union’s possession of the H-bomb which they had successfully tested two
years earlier. Rhiannon also claims ASIO inaccurately noted that she was
a founding member of the Eureka Students Organisation, in one stroke
glossing over her involvement with this organisation which was the CPA’s
youth wing, described by her father as being like the Pioneers. In its
heyday, the Pioneers was an international organisation for children,
operated by the Communist Party, which promoted sports and outdoor
skills while teaching communist principles. In actuality, Rhiannon’s
ASIO files record the application to attend the Junior Eureka League’s
1964 summer camp at age 13, her election as treasurer of the Junior
Eureka League’s South Sydney branch in 1965, her graduation from JEL and
her role as a Pioneer of the Souths branch.
By age 14, Lee was demonstrating against the Vietnam War. At 15, ASIO’s
files show she took part in a rowdy Eureka CPA protest against Prime
Minister Holt, participated in other protests, marches and communist
social functions, and attended a CPA Sydney district meeting. By age 16,
the ASIO files indicate that Lee did clerical work at CPA headquarters
during her school holidays. They also show that she was involved in
pamphleteering high schools, involved in Secondary Students for
International Tolerance and Equality and organising an anti-Vietnam War
peace ride to Canberra.
What the headline ‘ASIO spooks spied on little girls’ overlooks is that
the communists of the day did indoctrinate and attempt to use young
people and others to further Soviet ambition, a fact ASIO was well aware
of. The truth is that by the time Senator Rhiannon was 18, embarking
the Shota Rustaveli for the UK and who knows where else, she was a
hardened communist. It is easy to forget—and people born since may not
even appreciate—that during the Cold War the CPA was part of the
Comintern or Communist International which owed its loyalty to Moscow
and was dedicated to the revolutionary overthrow of our democratic
system. The CPA received funding and took direction from the Soviet
Union, senior members regularly travelled to and trained in Russia, its
members infiltrated other organisations and agencies while a few were
involved in espionage against their own country, Australia. In this
connection I note Laurie Aarons’s accusation contained in Mark Aarons’s
book The Family File that Senator Rhiannon’s father, Bill Brown,
procured spies for Ivan Skripov, the Soviet diplomat who was later
declared persona non grata and deported for spying in 1963. I quote:
<blockquote>… he (Skripov) got onto Bill Brown who started to try
and get some people, and in fact, he got one or two people. I don’t
know what happened. It’s wrong in principle and also stupid to get
involved in that.
</blockquote>
After the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, which the CPA had
criticised, the Soviets began courting Dick Dickson, Claude Jones and
Bill Brown to overthrow those in the CPA who had deviated from the
Moscow line. Dixon and Jones apparently refused. Jones knocked back the
usual bribery, saying, ‘I was offered any amount of money that I would
like to name from the CPSU’—the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. As
Mark Aarons put it:
<blockquote>As good punters, the embassy hedged its bets… and had
already put money on Bill Brown, who had previously demonstrated his
loyalty by assisting the KGB officer, Ivan Skripov.
</blockquote>
This was Bill Brown’s hour. ASIO documents show that the Soviets—Stenin
in particular—had established a clandestine link with Bill Brown outside
of CPA channels and that communications increased dramatically after
the invasion of Czechoslovakia. Given all the above, but in particular
given Bill and Lee Brown’s involvement with the KGB agents Stenin and
Alekseev at exactly this time, is it any wonder ASIO’s director-general
asked British intelligence to be apprised if Lee Brown came to notice in
the UK.
Let us now examine Senator Rhiannon’s initial response to the
Australian’s story about her rendezvous with the KGB agent Vladimir
Alekseev. Firstly, she claimed it was based on ‘inaccurate ASIO
records’. Contrary to her previous claims, the ASIO records are
generally very accurate. Moreover, ASIO’s report of the telephone
intercept of Vladimir Alekseev’s call to her mother, Freda Brown, is
quite detailed. Secondly, she claimed the attempt to associate her
departure on a Russian cruise ship to potential spy activities was
ridiculous. That claim was not made. Thirdly, she said, ‘I’ve never been
a spy and no-one ever attempted to recruit me.’ Again, no-one made that
allegation. The suggestion was that the KGB wanted to cultivate her as a
long-term agent of influence. Fourthly, she said, ‘Spy reports of me
being involved in clandestine meetings on board the ship are wrong.’ Did
you meet Alekseev or not? Fifthly, Senator Rhiannon played the ingenue,
just a young student, who was involved in some anti-Vietnam war
protests, embarking on a working holiday. I think we have established
she had a much longer rap sheet than that.
Senator Rhiannon may get away with this sort of fudging with her Eastern
bloc comrades in the New South Wales Greens; she cannot get away from
it here. As the Australian noted, Senator Rhiannon dismissed the report
of her rendezvous with Vladimir Alekseev as Cold War delusions but did
not deny the claim.
Finally, yesterday Senator Rhiannon, in a letter to the editor in the
Australian, asserted that to the best of her knowledge she had never met
a Russian spy and never attended a meeting on the ship—not a totally
unqualified denial. There are therefore a number of very serious
questions which Senator Rhiannon must answer. What was her involvement
with KGB agents Ivan Stenin and Vladimir Alekseev? Did she visit any
Eastern bloc countries in 1970-71? If so, which ones, why and precisely
when did she return to Australia? Did she attend the Lenin School during
any of her trips abroad?
In 2010 Senator Rhiannon promised that a full report on her ASIO file
would shortly be placed on her website. She never did this. I encourage
her to do so. It would be helpful to her and to the Senate. Perhaps she
could detail the extent of her involvement in plans to raise money for
North Vietnam, revealed in ASIO’s telephone intercept of 18 May 1972.
Senator Rhiannon may also care to confirm ASIO’s belief that she
authored a caustic letter to the Sydney Morning Herald on 26 February
1974—a fortnight after that giant of letters and human rights of the
20th century Alexander Solzhenitsyn was deported from the USSR and
stripped of his Soviet citizenship after the KGB found his manuscript
for the first part of The Gulag Archipelago. In the letter, one Lee
Brown took issue with the suggestion of Dick Klugman—a former Labor MP
and distinguished member of the lower house—that the Canberra street in
which the Soviet Embassy is situated be renamed Solzhenitsyn Avenue. She
suggested that streets around the US Embassy be renamed Watergate
Boulevard, Rosenberg Road and My Lai Memorial Avenue. The Rosenbergs, of
course, were executed for giving the Soviet Union atomic bomb secrets.
Lastly, in 2010 Senator Rhiannon said she did not support the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. I quote:
<blockquote>… My recollection is that we marched up
New South Head Road to the Soviet Consulate where there were speakers
long into the night ... Personally I did not support the invasion and to
conclude that when I was first getting involved in politics as a
teenager and in my early twenties I backed oppressive violent actions
against people in Czechoslovakia and Poland is ridiculous.
</blockquote>
Curiously, ASIO’s extensive surveillance files of protests disclose no
record of Senator Rhiannon protesting the Soviet invasion of
Czechoslovakia. They do, however, disclose the existence of a 1975
document for the Young Socialist League detailing planning by one Lee
Brown for a forthcoming Czechoslovakian delegation tour to Australia. No
doubt she made a personal protest.
I conclude with this question. Senator Rhiannon, if you were not a
neo-Stalinist, what were you? Are the Greens just another front for you
and your Eastern bloc claque? You owe the Senate and the people of New
South Wales and Australia a full and frank explanation of all these
matters. I say to the Greens as a whole that in recent times there have
been disclosures in a magazine, the Monthly, about a so-called rift
within the Greens between the original Greens, who came to the movement
out of a conviction that more needed to be done on the environment, and
other groups which started to join later on. One of those groups came
out of New South Wales. The real issue for the Greens now is the fight
that is going on for the heart and soul of the Greens. The Greens are
split. The Australian people should know that and they should know that
there are people in New South Wales within the green movement who are
seeking to subvert the green movement as a whole. Finally, it has come

A ROGUE surgeon performed unnecessary, unauthorised - and in some
cases botched surgery - on 152 WA women in a suspected money-making
scheme.
In 141 cases, he risked serious complications, including making the women infertile.
In several other cases, the now-banned medico was responsible for horrific blunders.
His reckless actions carried on unchecked in Perth hospitals for more than
four years before he was stopped and banned. Until today, the scandal
has been cloaked in secrecy because of a court order obtained by the
wealthy surgeon's lawyers.
After a marathon and expensive legal fight, The Sunday Times can finally tell the WA public what happened. But it still cannot name the surgeon.
His patients have told of major surgical errors such as attaching the
uterus to the bowel, slicing arteries, performing vaginal "resizings"
when they were not needed and incorrectly performed internal procedures.
In 2009, the surgeon, who has since fled the country, pleaded
guilty to misconduct and gross carelessness before the State
Administrative Tribunal.
One charge related to him performing unnecessary secondary operations without the consent of his patients.
After delivering babies through caesarean sections, he removed benign
growths, known as fimbrial cysts, from patients' fallopian tubes. These
ranged in size from pinheads to large marbles.
He did not tell his patients or seek their consent for the added procedure which netted
him extra money despite the heightened risk of infertility and other
serious complications.
A confidential Health Department briefing paper obtained by The Sunday Times
shows that between October 2001 and January 2006 the surgeon performed
these extra operations on at least 141 patients after he delivered their
babies. Eleven gynaecological procedures were also identified.
Authorities first discovered irregularities in September 2005, according to the paper.
It referred to the surgeon's "billing practice" billing hospitals for the
original operations and the removal of the cysts, which reaped him an
extra $384 to $492 a patient.
The "billing practice" significantly increased during 2004 and 2005.
In May 2006, the Medical Board won an interim order to stop the surgeon
performing the second operations. A month later, it applied to
indefinitely suspend the surgeon.
A full briefing on the case was provided to then South Metropolitan Area Health Service
chief executive Peter Flett, then health director Neale Fong and former health minister
Jim McGinty in August 2007. They all agreed that "open disclosure"
should occur to all patients who "may" have suffered some harm,
according to the briefing.
A month
later, authorities began making contact with patients. Twenty-four cases
were deemed serious enough to require senior health staff to phone
patients and tell them to
seek immediate medical attention.
Of those, six were referred to specialists for further checks. Other patients were sent letters
informing them they had secondary surgery they did not know about.
Over the same period, several patients filed complaints with the Medical
Board over botched gynaecological procedures by the same surgeon.
Thirteen proceedings were launched by the Medical Board against the surgeon,
involving nine patients.
The first case, which was filed in November 2005, involved an incorrectly
performed hysterectomy that left the woman completely numb in her uterus region.
Another case involved repeated botched gynaecological operations on a 16-year-old.
The surgeon left WA in early 2007.
In March 2009, he was permanently stripped of his right to work as a
doctor in WA after he was found guilty of "disgraceful or dishonourable"
conduct for lying about the complaints against him while trying to get
work in South Africa.
Almost all the details of the scandal
had been kept secret because a
blanket suppression order was granted
after the surgeon's lawyers argued
he was at risk of self-harm
if the case became public.
The Sunday Times won a partial lifting of the order, allowing it to publish today's story.
The newspaper spent more than $120,000 in its legal battle. More victims of the surgeon
may now surface.
The WA Health Department issued a statement on Friday about the surgeon.
It said: "Dr X was regularly billing for secondary medical procedures
while performing obstetric and gynaecological surgery. Independent
reviews found that these procedures were not medically indicated.
"WA Health reported Dr X to the WA Medical Board in 2006 following concerns
about his practices. Immediate action was taken to stop him from
operating in WA and a clinical review was conducted to determine the
number of women who may have been affected by the additional secondary
procedures. He ceased employment at WA Health in early 2006.
"WA Health identified 141 obstetric and 11 gynaecological patients who may have been affected by the secondary procedures.
WA Health contacted the women, but was unsuccessful in 13 cases despite all efforts.
"These women have been offered counselling and referral to a medical specialist if necessary," the report said.
"WA Health condemns the actions of this doctor and regrets any harm and distress he has caused patients and their families."
A Medical Board official said: "Ultimately the practitioner was deregistered as a result of the action taken by the board.
"Surgical procedures generally involved risk to the patient and it is
unacceptable to carry out any surgical procedure unnecessarily.
"It is also unacceptable to carry out a surgical procedure
without the patient having given his or her consent."

LABOR'S problem MP Craig Thomson today said he wanted the Fair Work Australia inquiry into him finished as soon as possible.
More than $400,000 has been spent since September trying to hurry
up the probe into the allegations, but the report is still at least a
month away.
He spoke out today to slam claims of political interference in the investigation
into his period as a (HEALTH SERVICES) union chief.
Mr Thomson said the claims were nonsense and had been countered by the
general manage of Fair Work Australia Bernadette O'Neill at a Senate
committee today.
"There is clearly no benefit for me or for the government
for this case to go on as long as it has," said Mr Thomson in a statement.
"From a personal point of view, the sooner the investigation is finished, the better."
Mr Thomson repeated that "I have done nothing wrong".
"I have fully cooperated with the investigations and I look forward to them concluding'" he said.
"I note that the only investigation to have already concluded, that of the
New South Wales Police, did not find any wrongdoing by me."
Directors of Fair Work Australia, which has been running the probe for more than
three years, today admitted there were "legitimate questions'' as to why
the inquiry has taken so long.
And they told consultants KPMG
would be holding an independent review of the investigation and the
"unreasonably long time" it has taken.
They tried to speed up matters late last year. About half of the $900,000 the inquiry
has been billed by the Solicitor-General for assistance in the inquiry went to
attempts to hasten finalisation of the report.
The admissions of tardiness are certain to be raised by the Opposition in Parliament.
However, directors of FWA told a Senate estimates committee the inquiry was
unprecedented and part of the delay was that one respondent to the
inquiry has not yet replied to a draft report. The directors said they
were unable to name any of the respondents for legal reasons as the
inquiry was still underway.
Since April, 2009, Fair Work Australia has been investigating claims, including alleged
misuse of credit cards for the payment of prostitutes, against Craig Thomson when
he was national secretary of the Health Services Union.
The Opposition is keen for a report to be finalised as an adverse finding
could lead to charges against the Labor member for Dobelle, and a
conviction force him out of Parliament. The Opposition also would
consider a vote of no confidence against the Government he was a member
of, based on an adverse finding.
The political sensitivity of the issue has added to pressure on FWA.
"I'm of the view that on the face of it the investigation has taken an
unreasonably long time," said FWA director Bernadette O'Neill today.
"And that that raises legitimate questions as to why it has taken so long."
Ms O'Neill said, "These investigations are unprecedented in terms of size
and scale and complexity and are unprecedented and only a very small
number have been undertaken. So I do think there are inevitably lessons
to be learned about the conduct of the investigations."
Another FWA director, Terry Nassios, acknowledged to the committee that the
investigators had indicated late last year the final report would be
ready in January.
"As at mid-October...I was working on a timeline that by mid-November those letters
(to respondents) would have been sent out," said Mr Nassios.
He
had thought the investigation would be over by November-December. But
he had "misjudged the quantity of material" needed for the letters. One
person still has
not responded and has until March 5 to do so.
He expected a final report in March, because "obviously there is some interconnection
between those responses and the final response".
Mr Nassios said the failed deadline became clear in early November.
"Half of the cost of this investigation has been expended from September
onwards in an attempt to finalise this as quickly as possible," he told
the committee.
"That is the expenditure with the Australian Government Solicitor.

Typically what most well intensioned Australians do not understand

Senator Arthur Sinodinos, formerly John Howard’s chief of staff,
has checked the ASIO files on Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon
and compared it with what Rhiannon claims.
And in a powerful speech to the Senate, he says:

Senator SINODINOS (New South Wales) (13:00): I
rise on a matter of public interest to do with my colleague Senator
Rhiannon and ASIO. In March 2010, in two speeches to the New South Wales
Legislative Council, the then Lee Rhiannon sought to discredit ASIO’s
surveillance of and files on her, claiming that they were riddled with
errors. Shortly afterwards, the questionable claims in her speeches were
reported as fact in a breathless newspaper article entitled ‘ASIO
spooks spied on little girls’. Thus Lee Rhiannon, who at the time was
vying for the Senate, was attempting to inoculate against objective
coverage of her 800-page ASIO file which had just been released by the
National Archives. In a blog on 3 September 2010 entitled ‘Responding to
attacks on my family and political background’, the now Senator
Rhiannon revisited the same theme while giving rose tinted accounts of
her early activism.
I have looked at Lee Brown, aka Gorman, aka Rhiannon’s ASIO files and I
must say I am impressed with their thoroughness and the obvious skill
involved in their compilation. While ASIO’s intelligence was not
perfect, as is to be expected, it was much, much better than Senator
Rhiannon has made out. Senator Rhiannon claims that ASIO’s ‘biggest
howler’ was ‘the assertion that I studied motor mechanics at UNSW’. This
is disingenuous. In fact, the ASIO report on the Young Socialist
League’s Marxist coaching seminar states that, ‘Lee Brown made the
general remark that she is studying motor mechanics at the University of
New South Wales, where she is currently employed as a lecturer’. ASIO
were not making that assertion; it was ASIO reporting Lee Brown’s own
words, a significant distinction I would have thought, since elsewhere
ASIO accurately record her university studies.
Recently it was disclosed that on 19 January 1970, as an 18-year-old
embarking on a voyage to the UK on the Russian vessel Shota Rustaveli,
Lee Brown was appointed to meet one Vladimir Alekseev from the Soviet
Embassy in cabin 190 on J-deck, where he would wait for her. An ASIO
intelligence file reveals that, when arranging this meeting, Alekseev
said that he was calling on behalf of one Ivan Stenin. An ASIO telephone
intercept reveals that the previous month Stenin had contacted
Rhiannon’s father who was intending to travel abroad before his daughter
by air to England, Switzerland and Russia. We now know of ASIO’s
conclusion that Stenin was a senior intelligence officer, and that many
believe that Vladimir Alekseev was the KGB station chief or ‘rezident’
at the Soviet Embassy in Canberra.
It is therefore timely to examine Senator Rhiannon’s ASIO file and to
test some of her other claims. In her 2010 blog she claimed that there
was no expectation she would follow in her parents’ political footsteps.
But in truth Senator Rhiannon was an in-vitro communist. According to
Mark Aarons, he and Lee Brown were ‘red-diaper babies’, a term by which
the Communist Party of Australia members affectionately referred to the
children of communists destined to inherit their parents’ political
genes. Rhiannon has perpetuated the line that ASIO began spying on her
when she was seven, because an ASIO precis-history of her activity has a
one-line record of her at a Tribune picnic in 1958. I think we can
assume that ASIO at the time was more interested in Rhiannon’s parents
and other communists than they were in Lee, precocious though she may
have been.
In fact, the first item in Senator Rhiannon’s ASIO file is a clipping
from an April 1955 edition of the CPA’s Tribune headlined ‘Kiddies’ big
part in May Day’, showing three-year-old ‘little Lee Brown’ dabbling at a
sign saying, ‘For me—Ban that H-bomb’ in preparation for the upcoming
May Day march. I am sure that ‘little Lee’ was oblivious to the Soviet
Union’s possession of the H-bomb which they had successfully tested two
years earlier. Rhiannon also claims ASIO inaccurately noted that she was
a founding member of the Eureka Students Organisation, in one stroke
glossing over her involvement with this organisation which was the CPA’s
youth wing, described by her father as being like the Pioneers. In its
heyday, the Pioneers was an international organisation for children,
operated by the Communist Party, which promoted sports and outdoor
skills while teaching communist principles. In actuality, Rhiannon’s
ASIO files record the application to attend the Junior Eureka League’s
1964 summer camp at age 13, her election as treasurer of the Junior
Eureka League’s South Sydney branch in 1965, her graduation from JEL and
her role as a Pioneer of the Souths branch.
By age 14, Lee was demonstrating against the Vietnam War. At 15, ASIO’s
files show she took part in a rowdy Eureka CPA protest against Prime
Minister Holt, participated in other protests, marches and communist
social functions, and attended a CPA Sydney district meeting. By age 16,
the ASIO files indicate that Lee did clerical work at CPA headquarters
during her school holidays. They also show that she was involved in
pamphleteering high schools, involved in Secondary Students for
International Tolerance and Equality and organising an anti-Vietnam War
peace ride to Canberra.
What the headline ‘ASIO spooks spied on little girls’ overlooks is that
the communists of the day did indoctrinate and attempt to use young
people and others to further Soviet ambition, a fact ASIO was well aware
of. The truth is that by the time Senator Rhiannon was 18, embarking
the Shota Rustaveli for the UK and who knows where else, she was a
hardened communist. It is easy to forget—and people born since may not
even appreciate—that during the Cold War the CPA was part of the
Comintern or Communist International which owed its loyalty to Moscow
and was dedicated to the revolutionary overthrow of our democratic
system. The CPA received funding and took direction from the Soviet
Union, senior members regularly travelled to and trained in Russia, its
members infiltrated other organisations and agencies while a few were
involved in espionage against their own country, Australia. In this
connection I note Laurie Aarons’s accusation contained in Mark Aarons’s
book The Family File that Senator Rhiannon’s father, Bill Brown,
procured spies for Ivan Skripov, the Soviet diplomat who was later
declared persona non grata and deported for spying in 1963. I quote:

know what happened. It’s wrong in principle and also stupid to get
involved in that.

After the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, which the CPA had
criticised, the Soviets began courting Dick Dickson, Claude Jones and
Bill Brown to overthrow those in the CPA who had deviated from the
Moscow line. Dixon and Jones apparently refused. Jones knocked back the
usual bribery, saying, ‘I was offered any amount of money that I would
like to name from the CPSU’—the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. As
Mark Aarons put it:

This was Bill Brown’s hour. ASIO documents show that the Soviets—Stenin
in particular—had established a clandestine link with Bill Brown outside
of CPA channels and that communications increased dramatically after
the invasion of Czechoslovakia. Given all the above, but in particular
given Bill and Lee Brown’s involvement with the KGB agents Stenin and
Alekseev at exactly this time, is it any wonder ASIO’s director-general
asked British intelligence to be apprised if Lee Brown came to notice in
the UK.
Let us now examine Senator Rhiannon’s initial response to the
Australian’s story about her rendezvous with the KGB agent Vladimir
Alekseev. Firstly, she claimed it was based on ‘inaccurate ASIO
records’. Contrary to her previous claims, the ASIO records are
generally very accurate. Moreover, ASIO’s report of the telephone
intercept of Vladimir Alekseev’s call to her mother, Freda Brown, is
quite detailed. Secondly, she claimed the attempt to associate her
departure on a Russian cruise ship to potential spy activities was
ridiculous. That claim was not made. Thirdly, she said, ‘I’ve never been
a spy and no-one ever attempted to recruit me.’ Again, no-one made that
allegation. The suggestion was that the KGB wanted to cultivate her as a
long-term agent of influence. Fourthly, she said, ‘Spy reports of me
being involved in clandestine meetings on board the ship are wrong.’ Did
you meet Alekseev or not? Fifthly, Senator Rhiannon played the ingenue,
just a young student, who was involved in some anti-Vietnam war
protests, embarking on a working holiday. I think we have established
she had a much longer rap sheet than that.
Senator Rhiannon may get away with this sort of fudging with her Eastern
bloc comrades in the New South Wales Greens; she cannot get away from
it here. As the Australian noted, Senator Rhiannon dismissed the report
of her rendezvous with Vladimir Alekseev as Cold War delusions but did
not deny the claim.
Finally, yesterday Senator Rhiannon, in a letter to the editor in the
Australian, asserted that to the best of her knowledge she had never met
a Russian spy and never attended a meeting on the ship—not a totally
unqualified denial. There are therefore a number of very serious
questions which Senator Rhiannon must answer. What was her involvement
with KGB agents Ivan Stenin and Vladimir Alekseev? Did she visit any
Eastern bloc countries in 1970-71? If so, which ones, why and precisely
when did she return to Australia? Did she attend the Lenin School during
any of her trips abroad?
In 2010 Senator Rhiannon promised that a full report on her ASIO file
would shortly be placed on her website. She never did this. I encourage
her to do so. It would be helpful to her and to the Senate. Perhaps she
could detail the extent of her involvement in plans to raise money for
North Vietnam, revealed in ASIO’s telephone intercept of 18 May 1972.
Senator Rhiannon may also care to confirm ASIO’s belief that she
authored a caustic letter to the Sydney Morning Herald on 26 February
1974—a fortnight after that giant of letters and human rights of the
20th century Alexander Solzhenitsyn was deported from the USSR and
stripped of his Soviet citizenship after the KGB found his manuscript
for the first part of The Gulag Archipelago. In the letter, one Lee
Brown took issue with the suggestion of Dick Klugman—a former Labor MP
and distinguished member of the lower house—that the Canberra street in
which the Soviet Embassy is situated be renamed Solzhenitsyn Avenue. She
suggested that streets around the US Embassy be renamed Watergate
Boulevard, Rosenberg Road and My Lai Memorial Avenue. The Rosenbergs, of
course, were executed for giving the Soviet Union atomic bomb secrets.
Lastly, in 2010 Senator Rhiannon said she did not support the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. I quote:

New South Head Road to the Soviet Consulate where there were speakers
long into the night ... Personally I did not support the invasion and to
conclude that when I was first getting involved in politics as a
teenager and in my early twenties I backed oppressive violent actions
against people in Czechoslovakia and Poland is ridiculous.
</blockquote>
Curiously, ASIO’s extensive surveillance files of protests disclose no
record of Senator Rhiannon protesting the Soviet invasion of
Czechoslovakia. They do, however, disclose the existence of a 1975
document for the Young Socialist League detailing planning by one Lee
Brown for a forthcoming Czechoslovakian delegation tour to Australia. No
doubt she made a personal protest.
I conclude with this question. Senator Rhiannon, if you were not a
neo-Stalinist, what were you? Are the Greens just another front for you
and your Eastern bloc claque? You owe the Senate and the people of New
South Wales and Australia a full and frank explanation of all these
matters. I say to the Greens as a whole that in recent times there have
been disclosures in a magazine, the Monthly, about a so-called rift
within the Greens between the original Greens, who came to the movement
out of a conviction that more needed to be done on the environment, and
other groups which started to join later on. One of those groups came
out of New South Wales. The real issue for the Greens now is the fight
that is going on for the heart and soul of the Greens. The Greens are
split. The Australian people should know that and they should know that
there are people in New South Wales within the green movement who are
seeking to subvert the green movement as a whole. Finally, it has come
to my attention over time that there have been attempts by people on the
Left to ridicule and trivialise the work of ASIO during the Cold War.
ASIO did what they needed to do. I am sure they made mistakes along the
way, but we should not underestimate the threats that we faced. In an
open society we do need bodies like ASIO to help protect us against our
enemies.

In 141 cases, he risked serious complications, including making the women infertile.
In several other cases, the now-banned medico was responsible for horrific blunders.
His reckless actions carried on unchecked in Perth hospitals for more than
four years before he was stopped and banned. Until today, the scandal
has been cloaked in secrecy because of a court order obtained by the
wealthy surgeon's lawyers.
After a marathon and expensive legal fight, The Sunday Times can finally tell the WA public what happened. But it still cannot name the surgeon.
His patients have told of major surgical errors such as attaching the
uterus to the bowel, slicing arteries, performing vaginal "resizings"
when they were not needed and incorrectly performed internal procedures.
In 2009, the surgeon, who has since fled the country, pleaded
guilty to misconduct and gross carelessness before the State
Administrative Tribunal.
One charge related to him performing unnecessary secondary operations without the consent of his patients.
After delivering babies through caesarean sections, he removed benign
growths, known as fimbrial cysts, from patients' fallopian tubes. These
ranged in size from pinheads to large marbles.
He did not tell his patients or seek their consent for the added procedure which netted
him extra money despite the heightened risk of infertility and other
serious complications.
A confidential Health Department briefing paper obtained by The Sunday Times
shows that between October 2001 and January 2006 the surgeon performed
these extra operations on at least 141 patients after he delivered their
babies. Eleven gynaecological procedures were also identified.
Authorities first discovered irregularities in September 2005, according to the paper.
It referred to the surgeon's "billing practice" billing hospitals for the
original operations and the removal of the cysts, which reaped him an
extra $384 to $492 a patient.
The "billing practice" significantly increased during 2004 and 2005.
In May 2006, the Medical Board won an interim order to stop the surgeon
performing the second operations. A month later, it applied to
indefinitely suspend the surgeon.
A full briefing on the case was provided to then South Metropolitan Area Health Service
chief executive Peter Flett, then health director Neale Fong and former health minister
Jim McGinty in August 2007. They all agreed that "open disclosure"
should occur to all patients who "may" have suffered some harm,
according to the briefing.
A month
later, authorities began making contact with patients. Twenty-four cases
were deemed serious enough to require senior health staff to phone
patients and tell them to
seek immediate medical attention.
Of those, six were referred to specialists for further checks. Other patients were sent letters
informing them they had secondary surgery they did not know about.
Over the same period, several patients filed complaints with the Medical
Board over botched gynaecological procedures by the same surgeon.
Thirteen proceedings were launched by the Medical Board against the surgeon,
involving nine patients.
The first case, which was filed in November 2005, involved an incorrectly
performed hysterectomy that left the woman completely numb in her uterus region.
Another case involved repeated botched gynaecological operations on a 16-year-old.
The surgeon left WA in early 2007.
In March 2009, he was permanently stripped of his right to work as a
doctor in WA after he was found guilty of "disgraceful or dishonourable"
conduct for lying about the complaints against him while trying to get
work in South Africa.
Almost all the details of the scandal
had been kept secret because a
blanket suppression order was granted
after the surgeon's lawyers argued
he was at risk of self-harm
if the case became public.
The Sunday Times won a partial lifting of the order, allowing it to publish today's story.
The newspaper spent more than $120,000 in its legal battle. More victims of the surgeon
may now surface.
The WA Health Department issued a statement on Friday about the surgeon.
It said: "Dr X was regularly billing for secondary medical procedures
while performing obstetric and gynaecological surgery. Independent
reviews found that these procedures were not medically indicated.
"WA Health reported Dr X to the WA Medical Board in 2006 following concerns
about his practices. Immediate action was taken to stop him from
operating in WA and a clinical review was conducted to determine the
number of women who may have been affected by the additional secondary
procedures. He ceased employment at WA Health in early 2006.
"WA Health identified 141 obstetric and 11 gynaecological patients who may have been affected by the secondary procedures.
WA Health contacted the women, but was unsuccessful in 13 cases despite all efforts.
"These women have been offered counselling and referral to a medical specialist if necessary," the report said.
"WA Health condemns the actions of this doctor and regrets any harm and distress he has caused patients and their families."
A Medical Board official said: "Ultimately the practitioner was deregistered as a result of the action taken by the board.
"Surgical procedures generally involved risk to the patient and it is
unacceptable to carry out any surgical procedure unnecessarily.
"It is also unacceptable to carry out a surgical procedure
without the patient having given his or her consent."

LABOR'S problem MP Craig Thomson today said he wanted the Fair Work Australia inquiry into him finished as soon as possible.
More than $400,000 has been spent since September trying to hurry
up the probe into the allegations, but the report is still at least a
month away.
He spoke out today to slam claims of political interference in the investigation
into his period as a (HEALTH SERVICES) union chief.
Mr Thomson said the claims were nonsense and had been countered by the
general manage of Fair Work Australia Bernadette O'Neill at a Senate
committee today.
"There is clearly no benefit for me or for the government
for this case to go on as long as it has," said Mr Thomson in a statement.
"From a personal point of view, the sooner the investigation is finished, the better."
Mr Thomson repeated that "I have done nothing wrong".
"I have fully cooperated with the investigations and I look forward to them concluding'" he said.
"I note that the only investigation to have already concluded, that of the
New South Wales Police, did not find any wrongdoing by me."
Directors of Fair Work Australia, which has been running the probe for more than
three years, today admitted there were "legitimate questions'' as to why
the inquiry has taken so long.
And they told consultants KPMG
would be holding an independent review of the investigation and the
"unreasonably long time" it has taken.
They tried to speed up matters late last year. About half of the $900,000 the inquiry
has been billed by the Solicitor-General for assistance in the inquiry went to
attempts to hasten finalisation of the report.
The admissions of tardiness are certain to be raised by the Opposition in Parliament.
However, directors of FWA told a Senate estimates committee the inquiry was
unprecedented and part of the delay was that one respondent to the
inquiry has not yet replied to a draft report. The directors said they
were unable to name any of the respondents for legal reasons as the
inquiry was still underway.
Since April, 2009, Fair Work Australia has been investigating claims, including alleged
misuse of credit cards for the payment of prostitutes, against Craig Thomson when
he was national secretary of the Health Services Union.
The Opposition is keen for a report to be finalised as an adverse finding
could lead to charges against the Labor member for Dobelle, and a
conviction force him out of Parliament. The Opposition also would
consider a vote of no confidence against the Government he was a member
of, based on an adverse finding.
The political sensitivity of the issue has added to pressure on FWA.
"I'm of the view that on the face of it the investigation has taken an
unreasonably long time," said FWA director Bernadette O'Neill today.
"And that that raises legitimate questions as to why it has taken so long."
Ms O'Neill said, "These investigations are unprecedented in terms of size
and scale and complexity and are unprecedented and only a very small
number have been undertaken. So I do think there are inevitably lessons
to be learned about the conduct of the investigations."
Another FWA director, Terry Nassios, acknowledged to the committee that the
investigators had indicated late last year the final report would be
ready in January.
"As at mid-October...I was working on a timeline that by mid-November those letters
(to respondents) would have been sent out," said Mr Nassios.
He
had thought the investigation would be over by November-December. But
he had "misjudged the quantity of material" needed for the letters. One
person still has
not responded and has until March 5 to do so.
He expected a final report in March, because "obviously there is some interconnection
between those responses and the final response".
Mr Nassios said the failed deadline became clear in early November.
"Half of the cost of this investigation has been expended from September
onwards in an attempt to finalise this as quickly as possible," he told
the committee.
"That is the expenditure with the Australian Government Solicitor.

A train line damaged by an earthquake

In the last 80 years, there have been 17 earthquakes in Australia registering 6.0 or more on the Richter Scale. This is a rate of about one earthquake every five years, compared to the world average of about 140 per year.

Quakes that Shook the Nation
Here is a list of some of the major earthquakes to have occured in Australia in recent times:
1 March 1954, Adelaide, South Australia
Adelaide was awakened by a loud rumbling sound. This was followed by shaking, severe enough to crack walls and loosen plaster and chimneys from many houses. Although minor compared to many overseas quakes, the Adelaide earthquake was (at magnitude 5.4) severe enough to cause damage estimated at $350 million (1997 values). No serious injuries were reported.
October 1968, Meckering, Western Australia
One of the more serious Australian earthquakes in fairly recent years occurred at the small town of Meckering. Residents reported seeing ground waves as well as experiencing difficulty when driving as the 6.9 Richter magnitude earthquake struck. Old buildings collapsed, railway lines were buckled and pipelines fractured, and a 37 kilometres long fault scarp (up to 2.5 metres high) was caused. Sixteen injuries were reported and the total cost of damage estimated $50 million.
22 January 1988, Tennant Creek, Northern Territory
Significant earthquakes of magnitudes 6.3, 6.4 and 6.8 occurred near Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. These resulted in large, long ground ruptures and a 35 kilometre fault (up to 2 metre displacement) which warped underground gas pipelines, but caused only minor damage to the hospital and some homes in the town.
28 December 1989, Newcastle, New South Wales
At 10.27am, Newcastle, Australia's sixth largest city, was partially devastated by a moderate earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter Scale. The Newcastle earthquake, the first lethal one in Australia, claimed 13 lives.
The devastation to buildings and other structures was extensive, which was unusual for a relatively-small magnitude earthquake. This was due mainly to an underlying, thin layer of alluvium, which appeared to magnify ground motion (shaking). The epicentre was located 15km West Southwest of the city centre, near Boolaroo.
August 1994, Ellalong, New South Wales
A damaging earthquake again affected the Hunter region of NSW, this time in the Ellalong-Cessnock area. Measuring 5.4 on the Richter Scale, it became our third most-damaging. Several homes, hotels and other buildings suffered seriously and up to 1,000 homes were partly damaged. Infrastructure, commercial and industrial losses also occurred. Insurance payouts were $38 million and total damage costs exceeded $150 million (1997 values).
The End of a Myth

Despite Australia's seemingly low-risk situation in the middle of one of Earth's larger tectonic plates, we have had many earthquakes larger than that of Newcastle. The map to the right shows that Australia is in the middle of the Australian-Indian Plate.
The Australian Geological Survey Organisation in Canberra estimates that on average, the Australian region experiences an earthquake of at least this size, or larger, every 13-15 months.
Most of these earthquakes have been in low populated areas, so for many years people thought Australia could not be affected by this natural disaster. The Newcastle experience dispelled this myth!

A volcanic eruption in the Western Uplands could potentially see lava flows and ash falls impacting on Melbourne.
There is also similar volcano risk present in various provinces in Far North Queensland, stretching from south-west of Townsville to near Cairns and up to Cooktown in the Far North. There are more than 380 volcanoes in total across this part of Queensland.
A future eruption in any of these regions would be unlikely to come from an existing volcano (as the volcanoes there are generally considered to be 'once only’ erupters).
Rather, future eruptions would occur at new sites nearby.
The geological record shows that new volcanoes in these areas have erupted perhaps every 2000 years in the past 40,000 years—and given there has not been a major eruption there for the past 5000 years, a significant eruption seems well overdue. " (3)

Comparison of the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict with Apartheid South AfricaThese days it is becoming very popular to compare the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict with apartheid South Africa prior to 1994. It is an odious comparison wreaked with many half-truths and clichés. Both situations are so different that when one examines the situation one can note major differences. The idea of using this comparison is to delegitimize Israel's right to exist within secure and recognized borders and to justify the Palestinian methods of terror in order to destroy Israel.
In apartheid South Africa prior to 1994 before the first democratic elections in South Africa 's history, there was this odious apartheid system. Its main purpose was to maintain white minority rule at all costs and to keep the black majority disenfranchised and without basic human rights. These blacks were a reservoir of cheap labour to operate the white economy and to ensure white prosperity at their expense. Blacks had suffered immense injustice under this system. White South African Government spending on black education and their general community welfare was minimal. The gap between the black situation then and slavery was not very large.
Social intercourse between whites and blacks in those days was a relationship between the white master and the black, underpaid servant. The situation for non-white people was intolerable and even cruel. It was against the law for Blacks to travel freely in the country of their birth except if they had a pass (dompas) from the white authorities. After 9.00 p.m., there was a curfew and blacks were forbidden in the streets after that dreaded hour in many towns. These people were not terrorists. They were not people who threatened the whites in any way. Denial of their basic human rights was commonplace. There was the dreaded Immorality Act, which prevented mixed marriages and sex beyond the colour bar. Those who contravened the law were imprisoned. There were separate public facilities for blacks and whites. Laws forbade blacks to eat in white restaurants. Separate transport facilities, which resulted in overcrowded conditions in buses and trains, were part of this evil, cruel system. It was common to see police officers abusing and ill treating blacks for not having their pass (identity or reference book) on their person when being searched. The police pushed them into the back of the police van, and drove them to the police station where they spent a night in the lock up cell. Usually their white employers bailed out these unfortunate persons when they produced a permit that they were in his employ legally. Blacks could not purchase property in white areas, as this was a contravention of the notorious Group Areas Act.
Anybody who opposed the apartheid system in those days – especially if he was black – was accused of being an agitator or communist. The police arrested him for 90 days without trial or recourse to a lawyer. This was increased later to 180 days detention and the police officer even had the power to keep a person imprisoned indefinitely without trial. These incidents occurred during the period of 1950 – 1990. Apartheid was at its zenith in those years. It was illegal to criticise the white government for its apartheid practices. There was limited criticism in those days by white opposition parties in parliament. However, the law controlled the limit of legal criticism. The abuse of prisoners for obtaining information was legal and encouraged. The police tortured the famous black leader, Steve Biko, to death when he was in prison for "anti-apartheid crimes" in 1977.
The majority of South African citizens was against apartheid and wanted to be part of a multi racial South Africa . The leaders of the liberation movements never spoke of destroying the white man and denying him rights in South Africa. Their fight was a justified fight for freedom and human rights as well as equality before the law.
If one were to contrast that with the situation in the Middle East, it is different. Israel 's Arab neighbours threatened her from the day of her establishment in 1948. There was never a desire to recognise Israel 's right to exist. What has this to do with South African style apartheid? Where is the comparison?
The blacks in their liberation struggle never targeted innocent people by suicide bombings or terror. There were sporadic incidents by some black extremists, but the mainstream liberation movements in South Africa went underground. Their leaders, who were living in exile, condemned this violence.
Perhaps, there may be a vague parallel of apartheid in the occupied territories since June 1967. The occupation is a complex problem that is the result of a war foisted onto Israel . Israel, being militarily superior, occupied territory in the Six Day War of June 1967 and made the fatal mistake of encouraging Jewish settlements there when it was obvious that there was no Arab partner who was willing to sign a peace treaty insuring the return of occupied territory as part of an overall peace agreement. The occupation and rule of the Palestinians is a tragic result of the wars that Israel fought for her survival/
However, had there been a willing partner on the Arab side who would come to terms with Israel's existence the seemingly "apartheid-like" situation would not have occurred. Israel never wished to conquer another people. This is contrary to the apartheid South African situation whereby the whites ruled and oppressed the blacks by force. They denied them their basic human rights. The intifida of 2000 resulted in a heavy spate of suicide violence against innocent Israelis, which resulted in heavy Israeli Army retaliation against armed Palestinian terrorists. The Palestinian terrorist groups had declared war on Israel and in a war; innocent people on both sides die and suffer.
The difference is that in South Africa both Whites and Blacks realized that their fate is dependent on one another. Both realised the importance of sitting down and negotiating a transitional period to end apartheid. Both sides were determined to rebuild the new democratic, multiracial South Africa . This feeling of mutual desire to end the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is lacking. The Palestinians have embarked on the road of terror and suicide bombings.
This is their chosen path. It differs from the path that the freedom fighters in South Africa chose. Here there is no desire to come to terms with Israel 's existence that was always a "thorn" in Palestinian flesh. Hamas and Islamic Jihad have made this perfectly clear to the world. Their manifesto is no example in building an alternative democratic Palestinian society in a state replacing Israel.
Is there not a similarity to Nazism in the Hamas manifesto? Many Palestinian observers in the UN Security council accuse Israel of genocide. Is the Hamas Manifesto not promoting genocide of the Jewish People? Compare this to the ideals of those who opposed and fought the cruel racist regime of White South Africa during those evil, apartheid years. Their fight was a fight to attain equality for all South Africans irrespective of their skin colour. This is not the case in the Israel-Palestinian dispute. Here there is no desire in Palestinian street, as represented by Hamas and company, to come to terms with Israel's existence – let alone negotiate a peace treaty, which would eventually lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel . Genocide is more part of the lexicon of the Palestinian terrorist groups than in Israel . Perhaps from this point of view, there is a similarity between the Palestinians and the dominating whites of apartheid South Africa . Both peoples oppressed their citizens and denied them basic human rights. Both regimes were corrupt and were involved in feathering their own nests.
The similarity of apartheid South Africa to the Palestinian Authority, including their methods of torture of opponents, makes this comparison closer to the truth.
Where are human rights in the Arab countries? Where are woman's rights in Islamic Society? In Saudi Arabia , women are treated like chattels and do not even have the franchise. Why are the human rights organizations not taking any view on that?
Another very big difference between apartheid South Africa and Israel is the fact that there are no separate facilities for Jews and Arabs. Arab Israelis have equal rights and have the right to vote. There is no law preventing social mixing between the two peoples nor are there separate universities for Arabs and Israelis in Israel.

In early 1991, Eritrean and Tigrean rebels began a concerted attack on Mengistu forces, meeting with surprising success for the first time since the civil war began in 1975. With the rebel armies advancing each day, Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam fled his country in early May. Rebels claimed control of the capital Addis Ababa shortly thereafter, and the situation of the Beta Israel took top priority in Israel. The Likud government of Yitzhak Shamir authorized a special permit for the Israeli airline, El Al, to fly on the Jewish Sabbath. On Friday, May 24, and continuing non-stop for 36 hours, a total of 34 El Al jumbo jets and Hercules C-130s—seats removed to accommodate the maximum number of Ethiopians—began a new chapter in the struggle for the freedom of Ethiopian Jewry.
Operation Solomon, named for the king from whom one of the theories suggest that the Beta Israel draw their lineage, ended almost as quickly as it began. Timing was crucial, since any delay by Israel could have allowed the rebels to hold the Jews as bargaining chips with Israel or the United States. A total of 14,324 Ethiopian Jews were rescued and resettled in Israel, a modern exodus of the grandest design. Operation Solomon rescued nearly double the number of Jews as were saved during Operation Moses and Joshua, and it did so in a mere fraction of the time.
More than 36,000 Ethiopian Jews now live in Israel and despite both economic and social hardships, their community has an integral part in Israeli society. In 1999, Avraham Yitzhak became the first Ethiopian immigrant to earn an MD degree from an Israeli medical school. In 2011, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs appointed Rachamim Elazar as Israel's Ambassador to Ethiopia, making him the first Israeli of Ethiopian descent to ever serve as an ambassador for the State of Israel. There are still many problems within the Ethiopian community in Israel - poverty, lack of education, etc - but large strides are being made every day.......................As early as the 16th century, Egypt's Chief Rabbi David ben Solomon ibn Avi Zimra (Radbaz) declared that in Halachic (Jewish legal) issues, the Beta Israel were indeed Jews. In 1855, Daniel ben Hamdya, a member of the Beta Israel, was the first Ethiopian Jew to visit Israel, meeting with a council of rabbis in Jerusalem concerning the authenticity of the Beta Israel. By 1864, almost all leading Jewish authorities, most notably Rabbi Azriel Hildsheimer of Eisenstadt, Germany, accepted the Beta Israel as true Jews. In 1908 the chief rabbis of forty-five countries had heeded Rabbi Hildsheimer's call and officially recognized the Beta Israel as fellow Jews.
In reaffirming the Radbaz's position centuries before, Rabbi Ovadia Yossef, Israel's Chief Sephardic Rabbi, stated in 1972, “I have come to the conclusion that Falashas are Jews who must be saved from absorption and assimilation. We are obliged to speed up their immigration to Israel and educate them in the spirit of the holy Torah, making them partners in the building of the Holy Land.”
In 1975, Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren wrote to the Beta Israel telling them, “You are our brothers, you are our blood and our flesh. You are true Jews.” Later that same year the Israeli Interministerial Commission officially recognized the Beta Israel as Jews under Israel's Law of Return, a law designed to aid in Jewish immigration to Israel. The Beta Israel were ready to come home.
Indeed, the Beta Israel were strictly observant in pre-Talmudic Jewish traditions. The women went to the mikvah, or ritual bath, just as observant Jewish women do to this day, and they continue to carry out ancient festivals, such as Seged, that have been passed down through the generations of Beta Israel. The Kesim, or religious leaders, are as widely revered and respected as the great rabbis in each community, passing the Jewish customs through storytelling and maintaining the few Jewish books and Torahs some communities were fortunate enough to have written in the liturgical language of Ge'ez.
Jewish Apathy . . .and its Defeat
The struggle to free the Beta Israel was not fought solely against the Ethiopian government. Much like some timid Jewish leaders during the Holocaust, some recent Jews sought to prevent a shanda fur de goyim (an embarrassment in front of the non-Jews) by not stirring up waves over Ethiopian Jewry.
The history of the Beta Israel's rescue is at times open to debate regarding the heroes of the Ethiopian Jewry movement. As with many struggles to free oppressed Jewry around the world, many advocated and vocalized opposition to those responsible for the lack of action on their behalf. Others, however, argued for a more quiet diplomacy, void of the public demonstrations and arrests that marked the struggle for Soviet Jewry.
Though over 8,000 Beta Israel managed to flee to Israel during his tenure, it was an Israeli official in charge of the Ethiopian Jews' absorption who may best symbolize the insensitivity that an extreme minority of people once held. Yehuda Dominitz who served as Director General of the Jewish Agency's Department of Immigration and Absorption, declared in 1980 that, “[taking] a Falasha (sic) out of his village, it's like taking a fish out of water...I'm not in favor of bringing them [to Israel].” Dominitz also refused to allow his agency to rent buses so Ethiopian Jews in Israel could travel to Jerusalem to observe their ancient holiday of Seged (Dominitz eventually relented, but had the buses take the Beta Israel to Haifa instead of Jerusalem).
Malkah Raymist, a writer for the World Zionist Organization, wrote in 1956 in The Jewish Horizon (of the Hapoel Hamizrachi of America Movement) that, “the reasons [for not bringing Ethiopian Jews to Israel] are simple and weighty. On one hand, they are well off where they are, while their development and mental outlook is that of children; they could fall an easy prey of exploitation, if brought here without any preparation. On the other hand, being a backward element, they would be and it would take several years before they could be educated towards a minimum of progressive thinking.”
In an American Association for Ethiopian Jews (AAEJ) press release, the AAEJ quoted its founder, Dr. Graenum Berger, as criticizing those who sought any delay in the rescue of the Beta Israel. Berger declared, “Not when Jews are dying...these revelations show once again that the policy of influencing factions of the government of Israel always have been against the immigration of the Ethiopian Jews. And, the same people who controlled their immigration then are controlling it now. These are the same people who gave instructions to the Israeli Embassy in Ethiopia (1956-1973) not to issue immigration visas to any Jew from Ethiopia.”
Berger himself came under criticism for his outspoken remarks concerning the Israeli efforts to rescue the Beta Israel, showing that nobody was immune from the rhetoric surrounding the issue.

This is perhaps the most odious claim made by Israel’s detractors. The Nazis’ objective was the systematic extermination of every Jew in Europe. Israel is seeking peace with its Palestinian neighbors. More than one million Arabs live as free and equal citizens in Israel. Of the Palestinians in the territories, 98 percent live under the civil administration of the Palestinian Authority. Israeli policies are designed to protect Israeli citizens—Jews and non-Jews—from the incessant campaign of terror. There has never been a plan to persecute, exterminate, or expel the Palestinian people.
In response to one such comparison, by a poet who referred to the “Zionist SS,” The New Republic’s literary editor Leon Wieseltier observed:
The view that Zionism is Nazism—there is no other way to understand the phrase “Zionist SS”—is not different in kind from the view that the moon is cheese. The absurdity of the charge is also clear from the demography of the disputed territories. While detractors make outrageous claims about Israel committing genocide or ethnic cleansing, the Palestinian population has continued to grow exponentially. In Gaza, for example, the population increased from 731,000 in July 1994 to 1,657,155 in 2011, an increase of 127 percent. The growth rate was 3.2 percent, one of the highest in the world. The total Palestinian population in all the disputed territories (they include Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem) was 1,006,000 in 1950, 1,094,000 in 1970, and grew to 3,736,210 in 2011. 42

Today, within Israel, Jews are a majority, but the Arab minority are full citizens who enjoy equal rights and are represented in all the branches of government. Arabs are represented in the Knesset, and have served in the Cabinet, high-level foreign ministry posts (e.g., Ambassador to Finland) and on the Supreme Court.
Under apartheid, skin color determined every aspect of your life from birth until death. Black South Africans could not vote and were not citizens of the country in which they formed the overwhelming majority of the population. Laws dictated where they could live, work, go to school and travel. And, in South Africa, the government killed blacks who protested against its policies. By contrast, Israel allows freedom of movement, assembly and speech. Some of the government’s harshest critics are Israeli Arabs who are members of the Knesset.

The situation of Palestinians in the territories is different. The security requirements of the nation, and a violent insurrection in the territories, forced Israel to impose restrictions on Arab residents of the West Bank and Gaza Strip that are not necessary inside Israel’s pre-1967 borders. Israeli policy is not based on race, but is a result of Palestinian animosity. Palestinians in the territories dispute Israel’s right to exist, whereas blacks did not seek the destruction of South Africa, only the apartheid regime.
If Israel were to give Palestinians full citizenship, it would mean the territories had been annexed. No Israeli government has been prepared to take that step. Instead, through negotiations, Israel agreed to give the Palestinians increasing authority over their own affairs. It is likely that a final settlement will allow most Palestinians to become citizens of their own state. The principal impediment to Palestinian independence is not Israeli policy, it is the unwillingness of the Palestinian leadership to give up terrorism and agree to live in peace beside Israel.
Despite all their criticism, when asked what governments they admire most, more than 80 percent of Palestinians consistently said Israel because they can see up close the thriving democracy in Israel, and the rights the Arab citizens enjoy there. By contrast, Palestinians place Arab regimes, including their own Palestinian Authority, at the bottom. 38

I have felt, since first hearing of Mr. Icke, that he was put out there to discredit me specifically. His conspiracist sci-fi confabulations, or "research," tracks my own themes (mind control, political assassinations, fascist globalism, etc.) in a grossly distorted form.
He boosted my writing on the Simpson case whole, for instance, and mixed it up, defiled my research, with "Lizard Aliens." He's a repulsive parody of myself ...
I've attempted to read the capricious, wrong-headed "research" of David "Jesus" Icke, and found it an amateurish omelot of used conspiracy theories concocted by the John Birch Society and other far-right groups to discredit legitimate research on fascism, which is inherently conspiratorial. Most people, dumbed down by "mainstream" media, can't tell the difference, and Icke takes advantage of that fact to peddle stupid, far-right conspiracy theories and "alien" invasions.

One of Icke's main sources is a notorious document called the `Protocols of the Elders of Zion', which he renames `the Illuminati Protocols'. It states that Jews are trying to take over the world, and was used by the Nazis to justify the genocide of 6 million people. The Waffen SS used to carry copies in their knapsacks.
By using this document Icke denies the word of those historians who have demonstrated, beyond doubt, that the Protocols are a forgery. He also gives credence to those groups who still use the Protocols to justify their anti-Semitism. [end quote]
David Icke did extensive damage to the credibility of the Greens with his anti-Semitic writings and claims to be a son of god. His ongoing attempts to gain credibility for himself from his prior association with our party makes the damage all the more egregious and ongoing.

The Dark Side of David Icke
He may seem like a harmless eccentric, but, says MARK HONIGSBAUM, some of the views put forward by self-styled guru David Icke, currently lecturing round Britain, are dangerously popular with anti-Semites and neo-Nazis.
It has become fashionable, even among adherents of the New Age, to dismiss David Icke as a crank. For a long time now the former Green Party spokesman and self-styled "Son of God" has been collecting fringe beliefs and theories like other people collect new shoes. UFOs, CIA "mind control", world apocalypse - you name it, David Icke has tried it.
But judging by the response to Icke's current lecture tour of Britain, he is no longer quite the figure of fun he used to be.
At a recent meeting in Glastonbury, for instance, more than 100 people paid 5 pounds each to hear his views. During the lecture, David Taylor, a national spokesman for the Green Party, repeatedly heckled Icke about his use of the notorious anti-Semitic forgery, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Meanwhile, the Jewish Chronicle has been pressing Icke's Bath-based publisher, Gateway, to reveal the truth about the manuscript of his latest book, said to contain offensive revisionary passages about the Holocaust.
Now uncanny parallels are emerging between Icke's thoughts - if that
is not too grand a term for his mishmash of conspiracy theories and
New Age - and the writings of senior figures in the armed militia

David Icke, the Reptilian Infiltration, and the Limits of Science Fiction

... The author goes on to postulate a race of reptilians that has controlled human society from its very beginning. These beings, which Icke calls by the Sumerian[3] word "Anunnaki," infiltrate human society through interbreeding with humans and placing their crossbred offspring into roles of power in human society. The evidence he offers to support this claim, as the late conspiracy expert Bill Keith has pointed out, is hardly of academic quality. The evidence ranges from crackpot etymology (vampires are reptilians because "Dracula" sounds like "Draco" and so on) to references to books that have been repeatedly debunked by scientific experts. Keith characterizes Icke's scholarly methodology as "Believe every goddamn weird thing anybody, anywhere ever said."
The poor quality of Icke's scholarship should be obvious to any reader with a middle-school education, and yet his work resonates with many people. A closer investigation into Icke's vision of Anunnaki infiltration helps to explain the appeal his writings have for his small but loyal group of followers. For Icke, the story of human enslavement by reptilian forces begins about 450,000 years ago. Paraphrasing a translation of a Sumerian tablet by the controversial Orientalist Alexander Sitchin, Icke describes the arrival of the Anunnaki in Africa for the purpose of mining gold. At first, the Anunnaki roped their own working classes into laboring in these mines, but later they developed humanity as a slave race through genetic engineering (6). While the original purpose of humanity's creation involved the exploitation of human labor, Icke argues that the Anunnaki have other, darker uses for human beings. Throughout The Biggest Secret, Icke points to the bloodiest and most difficult chapters in human history and blames each one on Anunnaki scheming. Human sacrifice? Demanded by reptilian overlords (38). British colonialism? Designed to wipe out indigenous knowledge and replace it with propaganda and mind-control (129).

Do my comments and sources constitute an "ad hominem" attack? - yep-yep. I have no problem with calling people vile names so long as they are backed by real facts, not misbegotten impressions of the sort "AdamS," who opened this discussion, brought to me. If the shoe fits ...
Since part one, "AdamS" has commented that my response is largely "guilt by association" - but anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial are not guilt by association. Neither is publishing in Neo-Nazi publications, something I'd never do in five million years. Spotlight? Exposure? That makes him one of them, not tangentially "associated" but in the Nazi camp. Only a rank amateur or "fellow traveller" would accuse me of "ad hominem" and "guilt by association" here. The Protocols of the Elders of Zion? Lizards from the fourth-dimension? How stupid does it have to get before his readers question this crap? What's next? The Protocols of Satanic, Jewish Gay Clowns from the Dog Star?
I'm an anti-nazi who exposes the Holocaust. My Birchite "shadow" is a neo-nazi who denies it. There is no common ground here, and anyone who calls Icke - as a publisher in Santa Barbara once did - "the British Alex Constantine," is a hopeless nutter. I once heard a 9/11 researcher interviewed on NPR refer to Icke as a "turd in the punchbowl." Drink at your own discretion, but know what you're swallowing.

GOVERNOR-General Quentin Bryce
has flown out of the country for the week
despite the potential for Australia's
worst constitutional crisis
in almost four decades.
Ms Bryce left Australia yesterday morning for a five-day tour of New Zealand
ahead
of the extraordinary challenge to the leadership of Prime Minister
Julia Gillard today and the volatile situation if Kevin Rudd wins and
had to form a minority government.
After a week of the Labor government imploding, Mr Rudd's ministerial resignation and
unprecedented bitter infighting among Ms Gillard and her senior cabinet ministers,
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott may also move a no-confidence motion
when parliament resumes.
A spokeswoman for Ms Bryce yesterday said the trip was a long-planned state visit and
that NSW Governor Marie Bashir, as the most senior state governor, had replaced her
as administrator of the head of state's office.
"We fly back into Sydney on Thursday night," a spokeswoman for Ms Bryce told
The Daily Telegraph from Auckland. "We don't expect any issues. It was long-planned."
But the spokeswoman would not comment on whether Ms Bryce had asked for legal advice
on Mr Rudd winning, having to renegotiate with the independents and asking her to form
a minority government.
"We don't comment on political issues," the spokeswoman said.
One constitutional law expert,
who did not wish to be named,
said that while Ms Bryce
may only be a few hours flight away
it was a strange decision.

JUSTICE - THE 'HEINER AFFAIR'

As Her Majesty's shadow attorney-general for the State of Tasmania,
I wish to raise a matter of injustice which has concerned me greatly,
and I will be, with the consent of the minister, tabling in the House and
making available to Hansard, the full article written by Australia's leading writer,
Piers Akerman, and published nationally under the headline 'Tragic tale needs ending'.
It relates to what has become known as the 'Heiner affair'.
It arises in Queensland but it is a matter of concern to all in Australia who
are committed to the pursuit of justice. The article speaks for itself, but I am grateful to
the minister for allowing me to table it because it will save me reading it into Hansard.
Piers Akerman puts a very strong case for a proper judicial inquiry
into a shocking injustice, an injustice which has been covered up for 19 years.
It was raised at the Standing Committee of Shadow Attorneys-General meeting
in Sydney on Friday, which I attended;
it was chaired by the Commonwealth Attorney-General, the Honourable Philip Ruddock MP.
It
was further raised at the national conference of Australians for a
Constitutional Monarchy, which I addressed in Sydney the following day.
I seek leave to table the article by Piers Akerman and have it incorporated into Hansard.
I commend it to all members. If you accept, as I do, that the case here is overwhelming,
then the matter will be listed for proper debate in this Parliament at a later time.
Justice delayed is justice denied. The girl who suffered this massive injustice needs to
have the matter put right and I appeal to all of you to read the article carefully and
I hope you will support me when I intend to bring the matter back to the Parliament
for debate later this session.

'Tragic tale needs ending
Federal Opposition leader Kevin Rudd may be called to answer questions
relating to the destruction of evidence as a police investigation into the rape of
Queensland girl 19 years ago gains new momentum.
The girl, who we will call Alice, was just 14 at the time and resident at the
John Oxley Youth Detention Centre, in the care of the Queensland Government,
when she was gang raped by other inmates.
Though some of the rapists confessed, no charges were pressed and the police
inquiry at the time was at best belated and perfunctory.
Alice's tragic story is but one strand of this horror,
the other is the Goss ALP government's attempt to
ignore her plight and bury the incident without trace.
That attempt began when an investigation directed by former magistrate Noel Heiner
and launched by the Cooper National Party government was shut down by the Goss government when it came to power.
The Goss cabinet ordered the shredding of all the documents collected by
Heiner and this marked the beginning of the Heiner Affair.
Rudd was premier Wayne Goss's chief of staff at the time and subsequently
became the director-general of his cabinet office. It was widely held that
nothing took place within cabinet without his knowledge, and he has also
claimed his experience running Goss's cabinet has equipped him to be prime
minister of Australia.
Though both Rudd and Queensland Premier Peter Beattie claimed as recently as
last week that the shredding of the documents needed no further investigation, it
has never been fully examined.
Both Rudd and Beattie also rejected the view of former chief justice of the High
Court Sir Harry Gibbs and an unprecedented plea from a former West
Australian chief justice (David Malcolm), two retired New South Wales chief
judges (Jack Lee, now deceased, and Dr Frank McGrath), two retired New
South Wales Supreme Court justices (Roddy Meagher and Barry O'Keefe), one
of Australia's foremost QCs (Alec Shand) and a legal academic and barrister
(Alastair MacAdam) that an independent special prosecutor be appointed to
examine the matter.
The most thorough inquiry to date was conducted by a House of
Representatives committee chaired by federal MP Bronwyn Bishop, which
recommended that 'members of the Queensland cabinet at the time that the
decision was made to shred the documents gathered by the Heiner inquiry be
charged for an offence pursuant to Section 129 of the Queensland Criminal
Code Act 1899. Charges pursuant to sections 132 and 140 of the Queensland
Criminal Code Act 1899 may also arise'.
Further, a recent two-year audit of the matter by prominent Sydney QC David
Rofe, which ran to 3 000 pages contained in nine volumes, concluded there
were 67 unaddressed alleged prima facie criminal charges against the cabinet
and civil servants that needed to be urgently addressed.
Alice still suffers profound psychological problems, exacerbated by repeated
charges that she is a liar, but filed a complaint with the Queensland Police
Service in March 2006, following the release under Freedom of Information
legislation, which included evidence that the rapists had confessed to both a
staffer at the youth centre, and the director of the facility, Peter Coyne.
The documents show that not only was she raped, she was also denied her legal
rights by the Queensland police - and those entrusted with her care.
Alice has been interviewed by members of the Queensland police taskforce
Argos and a senior detective from Argos last Tuesday sought an interview with
another person who has maintained an interest in the matter.
Rudd, who describes himself as a 'compassionate Christian' has not sought any
inquiry into the attacks on the girl and has not offered any explanation of the
destruction of the documents, though he had the responsibility for the business
of the cabinet. Whether the Queensland police are now up to fully investigating
such a highly charged political matter, given their studious attempts to ignore it,
is questionable.
As a number of the nation's most senior legal figures have pointed out, there is a
strong precedent for bringing charges against those who ordered and participated in
the shredding of the Heiner material, as shown by the case brought against a
Baptist pastor Douglas Ensbey.
Ensbey suspected that a member of a family in his congregation was being
abused and, while dealing with the mother, was given pages of notes written by
the victim. The family said they would deal with the issue and asked for the
pages back, but Ensbey had guillotined them, making them difficult to read.
The victim went to the police, aged 20, and the assailant immediately confessed.
The police, however, concentrated on the sliced pages and charged Ensbey with
the destruction of evidence under S129. He was found guilty by a jury in March
2004, convicted and sentenced to two year's jail (reduced on appeal to six
months, wholly suspended).
The action of the Goss cabinet falls under the same section of the law the police
used to pursue Douglas Ensbey.
Many see parallels in the campaign by crusaders against child abuse to hound
former governor-general Peter Hollingworth from office, though it was never
alleged he was involved in a crime.
Former Opposition leader Simon Crean said: 'You cannot have people in
authority who have covered up for child sex abuse. It is as simple as that'.
And it is. But what can be said about an Opposition Leader who may have been
complicit in the illegal shredding of evidence? If the ALP stands by the
standards it applied to Hollingworth, Rudd should resign and answer the
questions that the Queensland ALP has worked hard to avoid for 19 years.
If he has a shred of decency, he would consider Alice, and her need for release
from the hell she has been forced to live in because of this nauseating cover-up.'

QUENTIN Bryce should be reminded
there’s room in this country for just one prime minister.
And she isn’t it.
Indeed, no-one ever voted to make Bryce our Governor-General,
other than the Prime Minister himself.
Yet her new job seems to have gone to her head, because our
Activist-General’s apparent pretentions to be the political leader we
neither asked for nor should want have become alarming.
Last month, for instance, Bryce called in the head of the defence forces,
Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, the head of the Department of Foreign Affairs,
Michael L’Estrange, and the Treasury Secretary, Dr Ken Henry, for official briefings.
This was a first for any governor-general, her spokesman confirmed to The Australian. (Correction: the Governor General’s office has since informed us that this report
was false. Previous governors general have also received briefings.)
And I’m not surprised: does this former sex discrimination commissioner think
her titular role as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces
actually gives her real power over our soldiers, sailors and airmen?
In January, Bryce forgot herself even more completely, going to a big international
conference in Dubai on renewable energy and calling on the world to fight global warming.
“We must act swiftly, act smartly and act together,” she declared.
“Australia will play its full part in the global effort to make sure we seize that opportunity.”
Er, we will?
Even our real Prime Minister is now rethinking that plan, shaken by the recession,
while the Opposition clearly wants Australia to wait a while before doing anything
that will cost jobs.
So who was Bryce speaking for? Herself?
No can do, lady.
Bryce actually knew perfectly well when she accepted the role of Governor-General
that playing politics like this was not part of the job description.
Her job now is to represent all Australians, not just Greens voters, and
to stay well clear of the politics that would make her a polarising figure.
It’s as the late Richard McGarvie, the much-admired governor of Victoria,
judge and Labor man said—the job must go to a “respected person who remains
entirely above partisan politics and exerts a unifying influence”.
There is a critical reason for that,
beyond the fact that political meddling
by an unelected governor is undemocratic,
which is why we’d be upset if
even the Queen tried
what Bryce is now flaunting.
Even more important is that
the essential role of a governor is to make sure
the constitution works as it should.
Usually that’s an uncontroversial task—
signing into laws the Bills passed by parliament,
swearing in an elected government
and dissolving parliament
when the prime minister asks.
But as we saw with the sacking of the Whitlam government in 1975, sometimes
a governor-general must act in ways that can—if not done carefully by an
apolitical figure—have us at each other’s throats, screaming that
democracy is dead.
Bryce knows all this, but an enforced silence clearly chokes a woman
whose career was spent almost entirely on wagging an improving finger—
whether for the National Women’s Advisory Council,
the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission or
the Sex Discrimination Commission.
So while she promised to stop politicking, she couldn’t help adding:
“But that doesn’t mean you can’t express views and opinions on matters
of importance to the community.”
Or of importance to Bryce, to be exact. And off the Activist-General then hared,
leaping on political issues with barely a blush of shame.
She backed calls for paid maternity leave, just as the Rudd Government
decided to put this $450 million extravagance on the back burner.
She regally toured the Murray-Darling basin and demanded more leadership
in tackling the drought and global warming, both issues of fierce political debate—
not just between Labor and Liberal, but the Federal Government and the states.
And she launched the book version of the Garnaut Climate Change Review,
spruiking a highly tendentious tome written by Rudd’s hand-picked
adviser on global warming to fulfill a Labor election promise.
It’s hard to think of a more political document for the Governor-General to endorse,
other than the Labor Party platform itself.
I do not doubt that Bryce means well, and has seized on the
Governor-General’s job to do it. But what she wants to do comes at a
cost to the role she’s been given, and is best done by an elected and
accountable politician.
May I suggest she stand for election?
But perhaps that is now too humble an option for the rather grand Bryce,
who set a new first last month by recording a televised address to the nation.
Again, she meant well,
saying comforting things to the victims of the Black Saturday fires.
But it was incongruous to see a woman few Australians would recognise
and none have chosen deliver a message
in a form previously reserved for a Prime Minister or Queen.
Rather above her station, I thought.
And perhaps the next time the cameras come calling to Yarralumla,
Bryce might consider that rather than get on the box,
she should get back in it.

shredding of documents from an aborted inquiry into a youth centre in 1990.
Mr Abbott told parliament at the time the royal commission should examine
a "compendium of evidence" on the matter prepared by Sydney barrister David Rofe QC.
Ms Bryce, who served as Queensland Governor before becoming
Australia's first female Governor-General, was among numerous people
"adversely named" in Mr Rofe's document, a parliamentary committee was told.

Police this morning raided the house of
the man accused of providing secret commissions
to the Health Services Union's
former general secretary Craig Thomson
and the union's head Michael Williamson.
Detectives from Strike Force Carnarvon executed a search warrant at the
Palm Beach house of printer John Gilleland, 65, and his wife, Carron, shortly before 7am
today.
Several hours later, police from the computer crime squad arrived to assist in the search
of the Gillelands' house.

A Herald investigation last year revealed that
Mr Williamson and Mr Thomson were provided with American Express cards
by Mr Gilleland, who runs a graphic design and printing business.
The credit cards were issued in the names of Mr Thomson and Mr Williamson,
but were attached to Mr Gilleland's account and the bills incurred on those cards
were allegedly paid for by Mr Gilleland.
The Herald has previously reported that Mrs Gilleland allegedly complained
to senior union officials that Mr Williamson had "run amok" with the credit card.

He even paid his private school fees on it; this was not
part of the deal," Mrs Gilleland allegedly said. Mrs Gilleland today
denied that this occurred or that the converstation ever took place.
Mr Gilleland's company, Communigraphix, which he runs
from his two-storey house in Barrenjoey Road, receives $680,000 a year
to produce 10 issues of the union's newsletter, the Health Standard.
Either offering or receiving a benefit as an inducement
to act in a certain way in business dealings may constitute a criminal
offence, which can attract penalties of up to seven years' imprisonment.
Mr Williamson, who is on paid leave from the union, and
Mr Thomson, who became the federal member for Dobell in 2007, have
denied any wrongdoing.
This morning's police raid is not the printer's first brush with the law.
In 1984, he and his brother, Ian, were arrested by federal police
over their alleged role in using their printing company to produce
counterfeit German currency.
The quality of the notes was so good that they were given a seven out of 10 rating
by the Reserve Bank.
While John Gilleland was acquitted by a jury in 1986, at a subsequent trial,
Ian was found guilty and sentenced to five years' jail.
Mr Thomson is subject of two other investigations being
conducted by the Victorian Police and Fair Work Australia into
allegations that he used his union-issued credit card to withdraw
$100,000 in cash advances and to pay for prostitutes. This is a separate
card to the one that was the subject of today's police raid.

dysfunctional” and hence he was deposed. So someone who was at the time
known to run a “chaotic and dysfunctional” administration is then given
the job as foreign minister representing Australian interests abroad.
I fail to see how that was in the “National Interest”.
Party interest maybe, but certainly not National interest.
