Comparison of the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict with Apartheid South AfricaThese days it is becoming very popular to compare the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict with apartheid South Africa prior to 1994. It is an odious comparison wreaked with many half-truths and clichés. Both situations are so different that when one examines the situation one can note major differences. The idea of using this comparison is to delegitimize Israel's right to exist within secure and recognized borders and to justify the Palestinian methods of terror in order to destroy Israel.


In apartheid South Africa prior to 1994 before the first democratic elections in South Africa 's history, there was this odious apartheid system. Its main purpose was to maintain white minority rule at all costs and to keep the black majority disenfranchised and without basic human rights. These blacks were a reservoir of cheap labour to operate the white economy and to ensure white prosperity at their expense. Blacks had suffered immense injustice under this system. White South African Government spending on black education and their general community welfare was minimal. The gap between the black situation then and slavery was not very large.

Social intercourse between whites and blacks in those days was a relationship between the white master and the black, underpaid servant. The situation for non-white people was intolerable and even cruel. It was against the law for Blacks to travel freely in the country of their birth except if they had a pass (dompas) from the white authorities. After 9.00 p.m., there was a curfew and blacks were forbidden in the streets after that dreaded hour in many towns. These people were not terrorists. They were not people who threatened the whites in any way. Denial of their basic human rights was commonplace. There was the dreaded Immorality Act, which prevented mixed marriages and sex beyond the colour bar. Those who contravened the law were imprisoned. There were separate public facilities for blacks and whites. Laws forbade blacks to eat in white restaurants. Separate transport facilities, which resulted in overcrowded conditions in buses and trains, were part of this evil, cruel system. It was common to see police officers abusing and ill treating blacks for not having their pass (identity or reference book) on their person when being searched. The police pushed them into the back of the police van, and drove them to the police station where they spent a night in the lock up cell. Usually their white employers bailed out these unfortunate persons when they produced a permit that they were in his employ legally. Blacks could not purchase property in white areas, as this was a contravention of the notorious Group Areas Act.

Anybody who opposed the apartheid system in those days – especially if he was black – was accused of being an agitator or communist. The police arrested him for 90 days without trial or recourse to a lawyer. This was increased later to 180 days detention and the police officer even had the power to keep a person imprisoned indefinitely without trial. These incidents occurred during the period of 1950 – 1990. Apartheid was at its zenith in those years. It was illegal to criticise the white government for its apartheid practices. There was limited criticism in those days by white opposition parties in parliament. However, the law controlled the limit of legal criticism. The abuse of prisoners for obtaining information was legal and encouraged. The police tortured the famous black leader, Steve Biko, to death when he was in prison for "anti-apartheid crimes" in 1977.

The majority of South African citizens was against apartheid and wanted to be part of a multi racial South Africa . The leaders of the liberation movements never spoke of destroying the white man and denying him rights in South Africa. Their fight was a justified fight for freedom and human rights as well as equality before the law.

If one were to contrast that with the situation in the Middle East, it is different. Israel 's Arab neighbours threatened her from the day of her establishment in 1948. There was never a desire to recognise Israel 's right to exist. What has this to do with South African style apartheid? Where is the comparison?

The blacks in their liberation struggle never targeted innocent people by suicide bombings or terror. There were sporadic incidents by some black extremists, but the mainstream liberation movements in South Africa went underground. Their leaders, who were living in exile, condemned this violence.

Perhaps, there may be a vague parallel of apartheid in the occupied territories since June 1967. The occupation is a complex problem that is the result of a war foisted onto Israel . Israel, being militarily superior, occupied territory in the Six Day War of June 1967 and made the fatal mistake of encouraging Jewish settlements there when it was obvious that there was no Arab partner who was willing to sign a peace treaty insuring the return of occupied territory as part of an overall peace agreement. The occupation and rule of the Palestinians is a tragic result of the wars that Israel fought for her survival/

However, had there been a willing partner on the Arab side who would come to terms with Israel's existence the seemingly "apartheid-like" situation would not have occurred. Israel never wished to conquer another people. This is contrary to the apartheid South African situation whereby the whites ruled and oppressed the blacks by force. They denied them their basic human rights. The intifida of 2000 resulted in a heavy spate of suicide violence against innocent Israelis, which resulted in heavy Israeli Army retaliation against armed Palestinian terrorists. The Palestinian terrorist groups had declared war on Israel and in a war; innocent people on both sides die and suffer.

The difference is that in South Africa both Whites and Blacks realized that their fate is dependent on one another. Both realised the importance of sitting down and negotiating a transitional period to end apartheid. Both sides were determined to rebuild the new democratic, multiracial South Africa . This feeling of mutual desire to end the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is lacking. The Palestinians have embarked on the road of terror and suicide bombings.

This is their chosen path. It differs from the path that the freedom fighters in South Africa chose. Here there is no desire to come to terms with Israel 's existence that was always a "thorn" in Palestinian flesh. Hamas and Islamic Jihad have made this perfectly clear to the world. Their manifesto is no example in building an alternative democratic Palestinian society in a state replacing Israel.

Is there not a similarity to Nazism in the Hamas manifesto? Many Palestinian observers in the UN Security council accuse Israel of genocide. Is the Hamas Manifesto not promoting genocide of the Jewish People? Compare this to the ideals of those who opposed and fought the cruel racist regime of White South Africa during those evil, apartheid years. Their fight was a fight to attain equality for all South Africans irrespective of their skin colour. This is not the case in the Israel-Palestinian dispute. Here there is no desire in Palestinian street, as represented by Hamas and company, to come to terms with Israel's existence – let alone negotiate a peace treaty, which would eventually lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel . Genocide is more part of the lexicon of the Palestinian terrorist groups than in Israel . Perhaps from this point of view, there is a similarity between the Palestinians and the dominating whites of apartheid South Africa . Both peoples oppressed their citizens and denied them basic human rights. Both regimes were corrupt and were involved in feathering their own nests.

The similarity of apartheid South Africa to the Palestinian Authority, including their methods of torture of opponents, makes this comparison closer to the truth.
Where are human rights in the Arab countries? Where are woman's rights in Islamic Society? In Saudi Arabia , women are treated like chattels and do not even have the franchise. Why are the human rights organizations not taking any view on that?

Another very big difference between apartheid South Africa and Israel is the fact that there are no separate facilities for Jews and Arabs. Arab Israelis have equal rights and have the right to vote. There is no law preventing social mixing between the two peoples nor are there separate universities for Arabs and Israelis in Israel.

The comparison between Israel and apartheid South Africa shows total ignorance of the situation in both countries. After having been born and educated in apartheid South Africa and having opposed apartheid and racism all my life, I have come to realize how false and stupid this comparison really is. Much still remains to be done in the human rights area for Arab Israelis. There is some social descrimination in the job market and the situation is not as good as it could be. However, it is very far from the apartheid system of White South Africa where draconian laws were well set in place to separate blacks from whites

VEXNEWS can reveal that Tina Athanasopoulos,
a key organiser of the Occupy Melbourne
is a devotee of a bizarre anti-Semitic
neo-Nazi conspiracy theorist David Icke. But more of that later.

Occupy Melbourne ended predictably.

Even small-l liberal inner-city Melbourne had thought the protesters
had had a good run, longer than some of its less successful artistic
offerings and that it was time for it to decently conclude.

MESSED OPPORTUNITY
It was a missed opportunity for the mostly naive extremists – and their
Greens party allies – to honour their commitments and leave declaring
some kind of imaginary success over ‘the man’. Instead, in the manner of
the spoiled child, they blocked tram lines used by workers to get home
and fouled up the City Square, leaving it for Council workers to clean
up.


If empowering the “99%” against the “1%” was really the aim, they used and
abused a lot of innocent “99%” victims along the way to make a point
that no-one has yet articulated and no-one comprehends. For reasons we
shall see, some of what lurked behind Occupy Melbourne was much smellier
than even the most unwashed sleeping bag.

Naturally the chancers in the increasingly cynical and sleazy Greens
political party sniffed the opportunity over the body odour.

A self-appointed leader of the gathering, whose involvement in
funny-money “charity” schemes in the past prompt real questions about
his own corporate greed that he has failed to answer, Nick Carson was a Greens party political candidate at the last state election and continues as a member.

POWER BANDT
Their current MP for Melbourne, Dr Adam Bandt PhD, who is so nervous
about holding his seat that he had his party spend $10,000 of
taxpayer-generated funds on Galaxy opinion-polling to rebut claims he
was doing a woeful job as a local MP because he’s a regular no-show at
community events and has alienated many community groups in
inner-Melbourne, jumped all over the Occupy Melbourne sleeping bag,
declaring it was a “blunder” to move the protesters on.

Bandt was supportive of Occupy Melbourne, opining:

“It is no wonder that people are protesting. The richest 20% of
households in Australian have 60 times the wealth of the poorest 20% of
Australians. CEOs are getting huge pay increases and banks are posting
record profits.”

But Bandt is part of the problem of which he complains. He is Mr 1%
in a suit with a smug grin. He flies first class, at taxpayer expense.
He employed his girlfriend in his MP’s office at public expense. He then
got her another cushy job. He is paid nearly $4000 a week to serve as
an MP. He is chauffeured around to the airport in a V8 luxo-barge
ComCar.

He does not eat his own mung-bean cooking of the revolution.

And who could blame him?

KEEPING IT REAL
We don’t think MP’s are paid excessively or should lose perks that
perhaps slightly compensate for all the crap that gets thrown at them
but we do ask wannabe revolutionaries to be consistent and live the
words they preach.

That Socialist Party Yarra councillor Steve Jolly is a shocker. He
wants to reinstate socialism in the world, despite a rather embarrassing
experiment where whole countries were held back in a mire of waste and
indolence for decades with millions of people sent to gulags, persecuted
and murdered by the system that pretended to be a “worker’s paradise”.
In PR terms, we might call this something of a setback, perhaps slightly
“diminishing brand equity” as they might say on St Kilda Road.

But Jolly slings back his council honorarium – and is apparently
required to by his comrades – to the party whose dead horse he so
sincerely flogs and only receives a “living wage.”

If the Greens did that rather than pretend to be groovy
revolutionaries while flying around like pampered poodles, they’d be
more convincing. Jolly may be wrong but the Greens are wrong while being
frauds of the most outrageous kind.

WORKERS UNITED WILL NEVER BE DEFEATED
Meanwhile, there are workers who do it tough. One group of them – highly
unionised – have very high levels of workplace injury and trauma. Most
of them get around $60,000 to $70,000 per annum, maybe a little more
with overtime. They risk their lives, many of them, every time they go
out on the job.


Yep, it’s the Police.
They are working people.

But state Greens MP Colleen Hartland wasn’t impressed. She told her friends at The Age:

“Police in riot gear just started to push me and once that happened I decided that I would be joining in.”

They were doing their job. They did so very cautiously, deliberately
and responsibly in circumstances that ought never have been necessary
because the protesters ought to have packed up, cheered themselves
through the drizzle and declared a victory of some kind over the “man.”

It’s worth contemplating why they didn’t.

It’s because at the heart of the leadership of Occupy Melbourne were
the truly, raving mad. And, even worse, vile and dangerous anti-Semites
and neo-Nazis.

A key Occupy Melbourne organiser was Tina Athanasopoulos. She set up its Facebook page, gave interviews on 3CR representing them and so on.

And who is this Tina Athanasopoulos?


She’s a devotee of David Icke. VEXNEWS has obtained Facebook entries made by
her in a private David Icke group, where she assured members of his
group that she was a central player in the Occupy Melbourne and that she
would ensure Icke’s views were advanced.

David Icke, apparently touring the nation at the moment, is a leading
conspiracy theorist who expounds views including according to
Wikipedia:

At the heart of his theories lies the idea that the world is
becoming a global fascist state, that a secret group of reptilian
humanoids called the Babylonian Brotherhood controls humanity, and that
many prominent figures are reptilian, including George W. Bush, Queen
Elizabeth II, Kris Kristofferson, and Boxcar Willie

Ominously:

According to Barkun, Icke has actively tried to cultivate the far
right. In 1996, he spoke to a conference in Reno, Nevada, alongside
opponents of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act—which mandates
background checks on people who buy guns in the United States—including
Kirk Lyons, a white nationalist lawyer who has represented the Ku Klux
Klan. Barkun argues that the relationship between Icke, the militias,
and the Christian Patriots is complex because of the New Age baggage
Icke brings with him, and he stresses that Icke is not actually a member
of any of these groups, but he has nevertheless absorbed the world view
of the radical right virtually intact.

and, as such, he doesn’t think much of the Jews:

In The Robots’ Rebellion (1994), Icke introduced the idea that
the Global Elite’s plan for world domination was laid out in The
Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a hoax published in Russia in 1903,
which supposedly presented a plan by the Jewish people to take over the
world. The Protocols is the most influential piece of antisemitic
material of modern times, portraying the Jewish people as cackling
villains from a Saturday matinee, as Jon Ronson put it in his
documentary about Icke, David Icke, the Lizards and the Jews (2001)

These are the dogs that elected Greens party politicians have –
hopefully unwittingly – associated themselves with. Little wonder those
who attended Occupy Melbourne were left scratching at fleas afterwards.

AS many as 16,000 Australians got away with voting more than once in the 2010 razor's edge federal poll.

Dozens may have voted three times or more, but only three copped a slap on the wrist.

The Australian Electoral Commission has admitted to a Senate committee its
own records make it difficult to tell who is flouting electoral laws.

And it has been revealed little can be done if voters deny it.

Of the 16,189 people the AEC suspected of multiple votes, 5211 denied it
and 80 per cent of the 1458 who confessed were new voters or did not
understand how to vote.

It was decided 7925 were errors, many caused when
voters with similar names were recorded under the same name by accident.

Electoral Commissioner Ed Killesteyn told the committee the offence was
hard to prove as there was no real evidence if a person denied the offence.

Victorian Liberal senator Scott Ryan said the lack of prosecution
sent a confusing message to the country.

There have been calls for the introduction of photo ID,
with some seats won or lost on just a few votes.

"There are underground bases all over the place that Presidents and Prime Ministers aren't allowed to know what is happening inside.

"We are not alone. The idea that humans are the only two-legged, two-armed intelligent lifeform is ridiculous. These reptilian entities exist and they are influencing our world from beyond human sight.

"They have manipulated human genetics by tuning us into particular frequencies.

"And interbreeding between human and non-humans has created a new form. This hybrid was created to have no empathy. That is why there is no limit on their actions.

Icke was in New York during the Occupy Wall Street protest and went on a walkabout of the anti-capitalist demonstration site in the days before his show to round up supporters.

But the financial collapse was just a small slice of Icke's crazy Big Apple pie — and it's one fans everywhere are gobbling up. Because even more unbelievable than Icke's conspiracy theories is the fact he has turned them into a huge money-spinner around the globe.

The Isle of Wight resident has written 18 books and has another out next year. His current world tour is supporting his latest release, Human Race Get Off Your Knees.

Tickets for his New York show sold out at £45 a pop and his new books retail at £20. Some have been translated into eight languages.

At its peak his website was getting 600,000 hits a week. Take That star Robbie Williams, 37, is among the celebs said to have taken an interest in his work and Muse frontman Matt Bellamy, 33, shares Icke's view that world leaders have reptilian blood.

America is among his biggest markets and at his New York show fans wore Icke's branded clothing and clutched his books.

His supporters are of all ages, sexes and backgrounds. Most seem like pretty normal folk... until you ask them about reptiles.

Sylvia Prester, 51, had travelled from Washington DC to see her second Icke show. Wearing her souvenir T-shirt, she said: "He's telling the truth — I believe every word of it.

"My husband introduced me to David in 1995. We both believe there are reptilian forces controlling us through family bloodlines.

"The man is incredible. He might be selling books and tickets but he is not forcing you to buy them — he is doing it to spread the truth."

The internet is swamped with Icke fan sites that arrange meetings in every corner of the globe — with his followers desperate for the next book or show to splash their cash on. If value for money was measured in words to the Pound then Icke's stage show would be a bargain.

For £45, fans are subjected to an incredible eight hours of his conspiracy theories and views of the world.

The fact it is all senseless ramblings seems to matter not to his followers.

Before his life took a turn for the eccentric, Icke was a goalkeeper for Coventry City before arthritis cut short his career aged just 21.

He went on to become a sports presenter for the BBC where he hosted Grandstand, snooker tournaments and the sports news on morning show Breakfast Time.

Icke worked for the Beeb for eight years before his outspoken views on the poll tax — and initial refusal to pay it — cost him his job.

He then became a national speaker for the Green Party before his famous Wogan outburst in 1991.

By this time Icke would only wear turquoise clothes because he believed it was a conduit for positive energy. He explained to his New York fans: "Twenty years ago I talked about what was coming — now it's here. It's happening. People are finally awakening.

"I used to be a goalkeeper. They called me Cinderella because I kept missing the ball. That football period — playing with arthritis for four years — triggered a will to not give up.

"Then I worked for the BBC, then I became a spokesman for the Green Party. Then came my turquoise period. That's when I realised I was not alone in the room and there was someone talking to me.

"I went to Peru purely on intuition and amazing things happened. I heard a hill say: 'Come to me'. I thought, 'I can't believe a hill is talking to me'.

"I felt a drill in the top of my head and my feet were burning and pulling me to the ground.

"My arms went out at 45° and were there for an hour — I was shaking with this energy. At this time I went through my turquoise period, went on primetime telly and became a figure of ridicule for years." And speaking of his new self-appointed role in life, he added: "It was much easier reading the news."

As he arrived in New York he posted a message on his website again claiming 9/11 was an inside job.

He wrote: "Just over there is the emerging Freedom Tower on the site of the World Trade Center.

"Those two were brought down in an engineered, fake terrorist attack.

"That event has been used to dramatically reduce freedom in the country. It was engineered by the very sources who now say we have to invade this country and that."

But despite his controversial statement in the city devastated by the al-Qaeda attack that killed nearly 3,000 people, he walked off stage this weekend with the crowd on their feet — and his wallet bulging.

On his 1991 Wogan appearance, the audience howled in derision and the veteran TV host told Icke: "They're laughing at you, not with you."

You can't help but think Icke is having the last laugh after all.

On the face of it, few people would credit a retired soccer player who rants about a world takeover by blood-drinking lizards from outer space as being much of a threat to democracy. And as a general rule, they would probably be right.
David Icke, however, is an exception to that rule.

Icke, 48, is a native of Leicester, England. For five years he played professionally for the Coventry City and Hereford United soccer teams until forced to retire by arthritis. He subsequently went on to become a sports announcer for BBC-TV. For three years from 1988 to 1991 he was national spokesperson for the British Green Party, until he began a political evolution that was to begin with his expulsion from the Greens and wind up with his current involvement with anti-Semitism, neofascism, and lizards from Mars. [1]

At first this evolution seemed relatively harmless. Icke began to flirt seriously with New Age theories, and then began to act on them. He dressed in turquoise, and began to call himself the "son of godhead". But by the time his book "The Robot's Rebellion" was printed in 1994, his trajectory had begun to take quite a different course. In 1996, the British magazine "Left Green Perspectives" wrote that this book "indicated a convergence of New Age thinking with Nazi philosophy. Casting aside his pat concerns about the environment, Icke enthusiastically embraced the classic Nazi conspiracy theory, alleging that the world is controlled by a secret cadre of "The Elite." He openly endorsed The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the Tsarist anti-Semitic forgery that informed Hitler's notion of a global Jewish conspiracy."

The following year Icke brought out another book, "...and the truth shall set you free." This one, however, was self-published, as its content was so objectionable that his publisher refused to have it printed. And small wonder. The book repeated Icke's previous claims that the Protocols were true, and went on to state: "I strongly believe that a small Jewish clique which has contempt for the mass of Jewish people worked with non-Jews to create the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the Second World War....They then dominated the Versailles Peace Conference and created the circumstances which made the Second World War inevitable. They financed Hitler to power in 1933 and made the funds available for his rearmament." [2]

"That Chamberlain is a strong Anti-Semite adds to the value of the testimony which he bears to the nobility of the Sephardim, the intensely aristocratic Jews of Spain and Portugal, the descendants of the men whom the Romans, dreading their influence, deported westward. "That is nobility in the fullest sense of the word, genuine nobility of race! Beautiful forms, noble heads, dignity in speech and in deportment.... That out of the midst of such men prophets and psalmists should go forth, that I understood at the first glance -- something which I confess the closest observation of the many hundred 'Bochers' in the Friedrichstrasse in Berlin had failed to enable me to do."

He began to flirt explicitly with Holocaust denial, saying "why do we play a part in suppressing alternative information to the official line of the Second World War? How is it right that while this fierce suppression goes on, free copies of the Spielberg film, Schindler's List, are given to schools to indoctrinate children with the unchallenged version of events. And why do we, who say we oppose tyranny and demand freedom of speech, allow people to go to prison and be vilified, and magazines to be closed down on the spot, for suggesting another version of history." [3] He also denounced the Nuremberg Trials as "a farce" and "a calculated exercise in revenge and manipulation." [4]

Icke's politics today are a mishmash of most of the dominant themes of contemporary neofascism, mixed in with a smattering of topics culled from the U.S. militia movement. He has written diatribes on the Illuminati, the Council on Foreign Relations and the Trilateral Commission as examples of secret plots to take over the world. He opposes gun control as a plot by this Elite, which has deliberately orchestrated numerous mass shootings to whip up opposition to guns. [5] He has repeatedly posted anti-abortion literature and articles on his web site. [6] He rails against conspiracies to implant microchips in everyone's bodies, coded with the Satanic number "666". [7] He even accuses the U.S. government of carrying out the Oklahoma City bombing and murdering 168 men, women and children. [8]

For a decade Icke has exhibited signs of serious mental instability. In his web site autobiography he reveals that as early as 1990 he became aware of "a presence around me, like there was always someone in the room when there was not. It got to the point where I sat on the side of the bed in a hotel room in London in early 1990 and said to whoever or whatever: "If you are there will you please contact me because you are driving me up the wall." A year later, on holiday in Peru, Icke describes hearing voices: "as I looked at the mound, a voice in my head began to say: "Come to me, come to me, come to me.... Suddenly I felt my feet pulled to the ground again like a magnet, the same as in the newspaper shop, but this time far more powerful. My arms then shot above my head, with no decision by me for them to do so.... A flow of powerful energy began to go into the top of my head like a drill, and I could feel the flow going the other way up from the ground through my feet. It was then I heard the third voice in my head, something that has never happened since. It said very clearly: "It will be over when you feel the rain". [9]

Over the last year Icke's writings have become so paranoid and so extreme that many are probably inclined to dismiss him as posing any sort of threat, or requiring a response. Icke is now arguing in all seriousness that the Illuminati plot to take over the world is actually being carried out by a race of extraterrestrial reptiles in human form. They are described, literally, as being child-sacrificing, blood-drinking Satan-worshippers capable of changing their shape, whose ranks include George Bush, Bill and Hilary Clinton, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mum, Bob Hope and Kris Kristofferson, among others. [10]
David Icke is not alone. He is a small industry in a large and lucrative market of often well-to do New Age boomers. He has several web sites, an e-magazine, his own publishing house, and at least 9 books and 4 videotapes to his credit. He is constantly on the road, touring North America, Europe, Australia, South Africa, the Pyramids, and elsewhere. In the last five years he has spoken in Vancouver as many times, and across Canada he can turn out substantial audiences. His organizers claim he had 1,000 people out to hear him at his last gig in Vancouver, and he hopes to fill the Vogue Theatre on March 19. It's a large milieu that can afford the hefty prices Icke charges - up to $67 to attend a lecture, forty to fifty dollars for videotapes - and that generates a sizeable income for Icke and his message of conspiracism, fear and hate.

To organize all this, Icke has developed an international network of people who work with him and for him. They book the dates, churn out the posters and press releases, do the advance work, pick him up at the airport, get him to the hotel, introduce him, and get him back to his flight on time. They also show clearly why David Icke is a dangerous man, because they underscore his politics in an unmistakable way.

Icke is undeniably a flake, and a world-class flake, but his danger comes from his alliances as well as his politics. And it's the far right who handle this man, who package and promote and present his message across Canada and around the world.

Take Joseph Duggan. Duggan is the proprietor of Strong Eagles Productions, the company organizing Icke's current Vancouver speaking engagement. Duggan makes his living in part from organizing B.C. speaking engagements for a string of conspiracy theorists and famous personalities of the extreme right like Glen Kealey, Cathy O'Brien, Len Horowitz and others. [11] Duggan also used to be the health editor of Shared Vision until last year, which has itself advertised tours by Icke and hosted speeches by him as well. Interspersed with monthly columns on health foods and natural healing, Duggan's writings in Shared Vision also promoted the far right anti-government activist Murray Gauvreau [12], Colorado militia supporter Suzanne Harris [13], and the notorious Glen Kealey. [14]

In March 1997, Duggan's column referred extensively to the book "War Cycles, Peace Cycles" by American writer Richard K. Hoskins. [15] Hoskins has been denounced as "a virulent anti-Semite who is a leading ideologue of the Christian Identity movement" by no less a source than Conrad Black's National Post. When Aryan Nations member Buford Furrow was arrested in Los Angeles last August after shooting and wounding five people at a Jewish community centre and murdering a Filipino postal worker, police found a copy of "War Cycles, Peace Cycles" in his car. [16]

Icke's books and videos are also distributed by an organization in Salmon Arm, B.C. called The Preferred Network. The Preferred Network's web site advertises at least four of Icke's books and the same number of videotapes, as well as an extensive selection of U.S. and Canadian conspiracy materials covering the traditional themes particular to the far right: the government coverup of the Oklahoma City bombing, "The 10 Secrets Revenue Canada Doesn't Want You To Know", "Humanity's Extraterrestrial Origins", the AIDS coverup, the Ebola coverup, the Lockerbie coverup, the PanAm 800 coverup, "Satanism And The CIA", and Kari Simpson's expose of the gay agenda in B.C. schools. [17]

David Lethbridge, director of the Salmon Arm Coalition Against Racism, has described the organizer of The Preferred Network in the following way: "a well-attended demonstration opposing the Multilateral Agreement on Investment was held [in the spring of 1998] in Salmon Arm, B.C.... Working the fringes was Wes Mann, organizer of the Preferred Network. Mann was handing out flyers for conspiracy advocates David Icke, Ted Gunderson and Cathy O'Brien. Whenever he could, Mann would strike up a conversation with one of the demonstrators, then write down their name and phone number. I knew who Mann was. His Preferred Network catalog carries several dozen books and tapes promoting the usual New Age fare: cancer cures, spiritualist prophecies, UFO tales and so on. But much of the catalog consists of materials promoting right-wing militias and right-wing conspiracy theories, and books by notorious fascists and antisemites such as Eustace Mullins. I went over to Mann, who did not recognize me, and began to question him. Within minutes he was telling me that the MAI was the work of a conspiracy organized by the mysterious "Black Nobility" and the "International Bankers". The anti-Jewish code words were obvious. Soon Mann was telling me that the antisemitic forgery The Protocols Of The Elders Of Zion was authentic, that the Nazi Holocaust had never occurred, that the contemporary Jews were not Jews at all but descendants of the Turkish Khazars, and that the fascist Eustace Mullins was "a brilliant researcher". [18]

In Ottawa, Icke's key organizer is Tom J. Kennedy. Kennedy was responsible for much of the organizational detail of Icke's October 1999 speaking tour in Ottawa, Toronto, and Windsor, Ontario, also acting as his gofer and driver. [19] But Kennedy's activities do not stop there. He is an active supporter of Canada's DeTax movement, a far right current that imitates the tax-resistance strategies of the Freemen and other Christian Patriot groups in the U.S. [20] Kennedy's web site also promotes Glen Kealey's conspiracist workshops, and other similar endeavours. [21] And his politics become even clearer when one reads the materials Kennedy has posted on the internet over his own name. On January 18, 1999, he posted an article attacking usury [a favourite code word among the far right for the international Jewish Bankers Conspiracy]. [22] He had originally found this article on a British web site, and liked it so much he reposted it to his own list. The British group that had written the article, Final Conflict, is one of Britain's hard-core neo-nazi groups, whose web site carries articles entitled "Did Six Million Really Die" and slogans reading "Long Live Death." [23] Four months later, on May 6, 1999 Kennedy posted an article on secret societies he had picked up from the Hoffman Wire. [24] The Hoffman Wire is a far-right Holocaust denial organization based in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, not far from the headquarters of Aryan Nations. [25]

Kennedy's web site now carries an article "Fear NOT - The Ultimate Label "Anti-Semitic", which clarifies his endorsement of Icke's politics: "I have always been motivated to find out the real reasons why particular researchers and historians get targeted with the ultimate label "Anti-Semitic" and other lesser labels such as "Neo-Nazi" and "Racist" Needless to say, I was motivated to follow the information in search of reasons why David Icke was being so labelled during his Ontario `99 tour.... Perhaps the unfair labelling of researchers as "Anti-Semites" has a hidden agenda to keep people from seeking the "truth?" Or could this whole "Anti-Semitic" labelling be another "divide and conquer" deflection to keep us busy while the real 10,000 year agenda of the Freemasons and Bilderbergers is being completed? Just wondering??" [26] In probability, the labelling of Tom Kennedy as anti-Semitic might have more to do with his stated support for Holocaust denier David Irving ("a meticulous historical researcher" [27]), or with his pal Ernst Zundel, who told Kennedy in the early 1980's "Tom, you are writing about the usurious money system which reaps the Financial Elite multiple millions annually. What you are writing about is even more sacred than "the holocaust", so be very careful for your well-being!!" [28]

David Icke's associations with the extreme right are not confined to Canada, nor are they only a recent phenomenon. One of the most ominous instances of this was documented in an article in the London Evening Standard concerning Icke's 1995 speaking tour of Britain to promote his newest book, The Robot's Rebellion. Journalist Mark Honigsbaum reported that "what worries the Jewish community most is that Icke's veiled anti-Semitic references are now attracting the attention of more sinister British forces, in particular Combat 18, the neo-Nazi group which recruits among football's violent hooligan fringe. The Jewish Chronicle has reported how Combat 18 has taken to publicizing Icke's current tour in its internal journal, Putsch. Citing Icke's recent lecture in Glastonbury, Putsch claimed that Icke "spoke of "the sheep" and how the Zionist-operated government, sorry, "Illuminati", uses them for its own ends." The Combat 18 report continued: "He began to talk about the big conspiracy by a group of bankers, media moguls, etc. - always being clever enough not to mention what all these had in common"." [29]

Combat 18 is fascist. The numbers do not stand for "eighteen" but for "one - eight", the first and eighth letters of the alphabet. A and H, as in Adolph Hitler. C18 was for much of the 90's the most important and the most violent organization in the British neo-Nazi movement, with a number of murders to its credit. [30] C18 has now fallen on hard times. Its main leader, Charlie Sargent, is serving a life term for the first degree murder of one of his own followers, and the group itself promptly split in two over a bitter struggle over finances; but none of this prevented it from carrying out two bombings in black and Bangladeshi neighbourhoods in London last summer, or of being suspected in the bombing of a gay pub that killed two and sent 60 people to hospital. [31] Such are David Icke's friends and associates.

Despite this record, Icke enjoys a surprising degree of support from unexpected quarters. Connie Fogal, married to the long-time leftie alderman Harry Rankin, has had her organization, the Defence of Canadian Liberty Association, set up a literature table at one of Icke's appearances. Paul Hellyer's Canada Action Party also had a table at Icke's last Vancouver speech. Icke is listed as a contributor to the supposedly left-wing tabloid The Radical, published in Quesnel and distributed widely throughout B.C. And Icke's tours have been advertised in local New Age publications like Shared Vision and Common Ground.

The fact is that some of what Icke says has a resonance in these quarters. He's against world conspiracies, free trade, the MAI, the WTO and corporate globalism. Many of his far right supporters are active in other areas as well: cannabis legalization, alternative health, anti-corporate activism, even support for native sovereignty struggles like Gustavsen Lake. It's long overdue for the left, the environmental movement, feminists, anti-WTO activists, lesbians and gays, and yes, even New Agers, to start looking more closely at Icke and his friends. The advocates of Holocaust denial and anti-Semitism will seldom if ever reveal their real agenda. They prefer to work in the shadows, using coded language, building patiently for a new and improved Reich. The threat they pose is no less real simply because it doesn't register on the radar screen. Yet.

All we need to do is look at Austria to see why these politics have to be confronted, isolated and defeated, and the price we will all pay if they are not.

Over the last year Icke's writings have become so paranoid and so extreme that many are probably inclined to dismiss him as posing any sort of threat, or requiring a response. Icke is now arguing in all seriousness that the Illuminati plot to take over the world is actually being carried out by a race of extraterrestrial reptiles in human form. They are described, literally, as being child-sacrificing, blood-drinking Satan-worshippers capable of changing their shape, whose ranks include George Bush, Bill and Hilary Clinton, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mum, Bob Hope and Kris Kristofferson, among others.10

David Icke is not alone. He is a small industry in a large and lucrative market of often well-to do New Age boomers. He has several web sites, an e-magazine, his own publishing house, and at least 9 books and 4 videotapes to his credit. He is constantly on the road, touring North America, Europe, Australia, South Africa, the Pyramids, and elsewhere. In the last five years he has spoken in Vancouver as many times, and across Canada he can turn out substantial audiences. His organizers claim he had 1,000 people out to hear him at his last gig in Vancouver, and he hopes to fill the Vogue Theatre on March 19. It's a large milieu that can afford the hefty prices Icke charges - up to $67 to attend a lecture, forty to fifty dollars for videotapes - and that generates a sizeable income for Icke and his message of conspiracism, fear and hate.

To organize all this, Icke has developed an international network of people who work with him and for him. They book the dates, churn out the posters and press releases, do the advance work, pick him up at the airport, get him to the hotel, introduce him, and get him back to his flight on time. They also show clearly why David Icke is a dangerous man, because they underscore his politics in an unmistakable way.

Icke is undeniably a flake, and a world-class flake, but his danger comes from his alliances as well as his politics. And it's the far right who handle this man, who package and promote and present his message across Canada and around the world.

Take Joseph Duggan. Duggan is the proprietor of Strong Eagles Productions, the company organizing Icke's current Vancouver speaking engagement. Duggan makes his living in part from organizing B.C. speaking engagements for a string of conspiracy theorists and famous personalities of the extreme right like Glen Kealey, Cathy O'Brien, Len Horowitz and others.11 Duggan also used to be the health editor of Shared Vision until last year, which has itself advertised tours by Icke and hosted speeches by him as well. Interspersed with monthly columns on health foods and natural healing, Duggan's writings in Shared Vision also promoted the far right anti-government activist Murray Gauvreau12, Colorado militia supporter Suzanne Harris13, and the notorious Glen Kealey.14

In March 1997, Duggan's column referred extensively to the book "War Cycles, Peace Cycles" by American writer Richard K. Hoskins.15 Hoskins has been denounced as "a virulent anti-Semite who is a leading ideologue of the Christian Identity movement" by no less a source than Conrad Black's National Post. When Aryan Nations member Buford Furrow was arrested in Los Angeles last August after shooting and wounding five people at a Jewish community centre and murdering a Filipino postal worker, police found a copy of "War Cycles, Peace Cycles" in his car.16

Icke's books and videos are also distributed by an organization in Salmon Arm, B.C. called The Preferred Network. The Preferred Network's web site advertises at least four of Icke's books and the same number of videotapes, as well as an extensive selection of U.S. and Canadian conspiracy materials covering the traditional themes particular to the far right: the government coverup of the Oklahoma City bombing, "The 10 Secrets Revenue Canada Doesn't Want You To Know", "Humanity's Extraterrestrial Origins", the AIDS coverup, the Ebola coverup, the Lockerbie coverup, the PanAm 800 coverup, "Satanism And The CIA", and Kari Simpson's expose of the gay agenda in B.C. schools.17

David Lethbridge, director of the Salmon Arm Coalition Against Racism, has described the organizer of The Preferred Network in the following way: "a well-attended demonstration opposing the Multilateral Agreement on Investment was held [in the spring of 1998] in Salmon Arm, B.C.... Working the fringes was Wes Mann, organizer of the Preferred Network. Mann was handing out flyers for conspiracy advocates David Icke, Ted Gunderson and Cathy O'Brien. Whenever he could, Mann would strike up a conversation with one of the demonstrators, then write down their name and phone number. I knew who Mann was. His Preferred Network catalog carries several dozen books and tapes promoting the usual New Age fare: cancer cures, spiritualist prophecies, UFO tales and so on. But much of the catalog consists of materials promoting right-wing militias and right-wing conspiracy theories, and books by notorious fascists and antisemites such as Eustace Mullins. I went over to Mann, who did not recognize me, and began to question him. Within minutes he was telling me that the MAI was the work of a conspiracy organized by the mysterious "Black Nobility" and the "International Bankers". The anti-Jewish code words were obvious. Soon Mann was telling me that the antisemitic forgery The Protocols Of The Elders Of Zion was authentic, that the Nazi Holocaust had never occurred, that the contemporary Jews were not Jews at all but descendants of the Turkish Khazars, and that the fascist Eustace Mullins was "a brilliant researcher".18

In Ottawa, Icke's key organizer is Tom J. Kennedy. Kennedy was responsible for much of the organizational detail of Icke's October 1999 speaking tour in Ottawa, Toronto, and Windsor, Ontario, also acting as his gofer and driver.19 But Kennedy's activities do not stop there. He is an active supporter of Canada's DeTax movement, a far right current that imitates the tax-resistance strategies of the Freemen and other Christian Patriot groups in the U.S.20 Kennedy's web site also promotes Glen Kealey's conspiracist workshops, and other similar endeavours.21 And his politics become even clearer when one reads the materials Kennedy has posted on the internet over his own name. On January 18, 1999, he posted an article attacking usury [a favourite code word among the far right for the international Jewish Bankers Conspiracy].22 He had originally found this article on a British web site, and liked it so much he reposted it to his own list. The British group that had written the article, Final Conflict, is one of Britain's hard-core neo-nazi groups, whose web site carries articles entitled "Did Six Million Really Die" and slogans reading "Long Live Death."23 Four months later, on May 6, 1999 Kennedy posted an article on secret societies he had picked up from the Hoffman Wire.24 The Hoffman Wire is a far-right Holocaust denial organization based in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, not far from the headquarters of Aryan Nations.25

Kennedy's web site now carries an article "Fear NOT - The Ultimate Label "Anti-Semitic", which clarifies his endorsement of Icke's politics: "I have always been motivated to find out the real reasons why particular researchers and historians get targeted with the ultimate label "Anti-Semitic" and other lesser labels such as "Neo-Nazi" and "Racist" Needless to say, I was motivated to follow the information in search of reasons why David Icke was being so labelled during his Ontario `99 tour.... Perhaps the unfair labelling of researchers as "Anti-Semites" has a hidden agenda to keep people from seeking the "truth?" Or could this whole "Anti-Semitic" labelling be another "divide and conquer" deflection to keep us busy while the real 10,000 year agenda of the Freemasons and Bilderbergers is being completed? Just wondering??"26 In probability, the labelling of Tom Kennedy as anti-Semitic might have more to do with his stated support for Holocaust denier David Irving ("a meticulous historical researcher"27), or with his pal Ernst Zundel, who told Kennedy in the early 1980's "Tom, you are writing about the usurious money system which reaps the Financial Elite multiple millions annually. What you are writing about is even more sacred than "the holocaust", so be very careful for your well-being!!"28

David Icke's associations with the extreme right are not confined to Canada, nor are they only a recent phenomenon. One of the most ominous instances of this was documented in an article in the London Evening Standard concerning Icke's 1995 speaking tour of Britain to promote his newest book, The Robot's Rebellion. Journalist Mark Honigsbaum reported that "what worries the Jewish community most is that Icke's veiled anti-Semitic references are now attracting the attention of more sinister British forces, in particular Combat 18, the neo-Nazi group which recruits among football's violent hooligan fringe. The Jewish Chronicle has reported how Combat 18 has taken to publicizing Icke's current tour in its internal journal, Putsch. Citing Icke's recent lecture in Glastonbury, Putsch claimed that Icke "spoke of "the sheep" and how the Zionist-operated government, sorry, "Illuminati", uses them for its own ends." The Combat 18 report continued: "He began to talk about the big conspiracy by a group of bankers, media moguls, etc. - always being clever enough not to mention what all these had in common"."29

Combat 18 is fascist. The numbers do not stand for "eighteen" but for "one - eight", the first and eighth letters of the alphabet. A and H, as in Adolph Hitler. C18 was for much of the 90's the most important and the most violent organization in the British neo-Nazi movement, with a number of murders to its credit. 30 C18 has now fallen on hard times. Its main leader, Charlie Sargent, is serving a life term for the first degree murder of one of his own followers, and the group itself promptly split in two over a bitter struggle over finances; but none of this prevented it from carrying out two bombings in black and Bangladeshi neighbourhoods in London last summer, or of being suspected in the bombing of a gay pub that killed two and sent 60 people to hospital.31 Such are David Icke's friends and associates.

Despite this record, Icke enjoys a surprising degree of support from unexpected quarters. Connie Fogal, married to the long-time leftie alderman Harry Rankin, has had her organization, the Defence of Canadian Liberty Association, set up a literature table at one of Icke's appearances. Paul Hellyer's Canada Action Party also had a table at Icke's last Vancouver speech. Icke is listed as a contributor to the supposedly left-wing tabloid The Radical, published in Quesnel and distributed widely throughout B.C. And Icke's tours have been advertised in local New Age publications like Shared Vision and Common Ground.

The fact is that some of what Icke says has a resonance in these quarters. He's against world conspiracies, free trade, the MAI, the WTO and corporate globalism. Many of his far right supporters are active in other areas as well: cannabis legalization, alternative health, anti-corporate activism, even support for native sovereignty struggles like Gustavsen Lake. It's long overdue for the left, the environmental movement, feminists, anti-WTO activists, lesbians and gays, and yes, even New Agers, to start looking more closely at Icke and his friends. The advocates of Holocaust denial and anti-Semitism will seldom if ever reveal their real agenda. They prefer to work in the shadows, using coded language, building patiently for a new and improved Reich. The threat they pose is no less real simply because it doesn't register on the radar screen. Yet.

All we need to do is look at Austria to see why these politics have to be confronted, isolated and defeated, and the price we will all pay if they are not

..................................Naturally, Devi's book is heavily promoted by neo-Nazis such as Canadian Ernst Zundel, as are her tapes, "for serious students of the occult". Zundel himself follows the time-honored Nazi obsession with occult and psychic phenomena, particularly UFOs. Another major neo-Nazi center in New Zealand offers a book catalog which contains as many titles on the occult as on politics - dealing with runes, Atlantis, Norse religion, magicians, and Hitler-as-god.

The best personal example of neo-Nazi ideology merged with NA thought is David Icke, former BBC commentator turned Green Party activist and "son of the godhead" guru, whose seminars are crowded with NAers and neo-Nazis alike. Likewise the British magazine _Rainbow Ark_ and the Australian periodical _Nexus_, which Icke recommends to his followers.
