was ever used to kill prisoners in the following concentration camps
Bergen_belsen, Buchenwald, Dachau, Flassenburg, Gross-Rosen,

(Wewelsburg, ravensbruck, Sachsenhausen, Stutthol, Thereselenstadt.

In all cases where gassings were alleged, it could be proven that
torture had been used to extract confessions and witnesses have lied.

Any former inmate who, during their debriefing continues to allege
that poison gas was used to murder people (in particular jews), are to
be reported to this office and if they insist on lying further, they
are to be charged with perjury.

The above is a transcription of a document first published in
1987 in an Austrian magazine called HALT! The certifier was
an observer on the Allied Commissions of Inquiry which issued
the letter in 1948 and has testified to its authenticity in court on
a number of occasions including the 1988 trial of revisionist
publisher Ernst Zuendel.

The document is significant in not only what it says, but also in
what it does not say. It does not list any camps where the A.C. I.
verified people were killed by poison gas. The reason for this
is -- according to Lachout -- in all instances investigated the
gassing stories proved to be false. Testimony of gassing at other
locations were not investigated by the A.C.I. So it cannot be
assumed such stories are true if those locations are not in the list

If an Allied Commission established in 1948 that nothing like these
gassings took ever place in these KZs there should be preserved some
files, reports or whatever about the activities of this alleged
commission. An oppression of these "results" of an inquiry can be
explained only by a wide-spread conspiracy, where even members of that
commission didn't speak out later about their investigations. But
what is presented instead relies solely on one person, this Emil
Lachout.

The main problem, however, with E.Lachout's testimony in his own case
is very simple - there is NO documentary proof, that a military-police
service in charge of the security of the Allies existed in Austria in
1948. The Allies, especially the 'Kommandatura' in occupied Vienna,
which was a four-sector town like Berlin, had only normal Austrian
police forces at hand. There does not exist a shred of a document
about a Military Guard Battalion in Vienna, nor could Lachout provide
any further evidence, that a certain Major M"uller head of a "MPD"
ever existed, let alone this MPD as a whole. Rather Lachout, born in
1928, could hardly have been Lieutenant in 1948. In short, the
"document" is a bold fabrication - and rather stupid as that, because
it invents a complete military establishment which didn't exist in
Austria in 1948. So, the main problem with the Lachout-"document" is
an intrinsical problem with "Revisionist" scholarship.

This is true. As long a historic incidence isn't investigated
nothing can be said about it with certainty.
But, in relation with this "document" none of these alleged
investigations can be proved, nor can be said anything
about "stories" (which one?) being false at all,
even if taking the "document" at face value.
We must conclude, however, that the investigations alleged
to in the Lachout-"document" didn't take place or hadn't
the result alluded to in the "document" because the
main verifiable claims, existence of a complete military
establishment, in that document proved to be false, and nothing
more about these alleged investigations is said in the "document".

"tales of gassings" alluded to in an obviously faked document
are taken as "prove" that mass-murders didn't take place in
certain KZs while the mass of evidence about the crimes in these
camps isn't considered at all. Instead, what we have here is
again prove by invented conspiracy, based on fabrications.

Most of the "Revisionist" ravings about fabrications, conspiracies and
myths should be taken as self-description of "Revisionist
scholarship".............................The consistent refusal of "Revisionist scholars" to even acknowledge
the mass of evidence produced by scholars, in trials and by many
independent witnesses, let alone to try to justify why they may
disregard all these by vague alusions to some conspiracy must not be
taken simply as a whim of a certain esoteric strand of inquiry. This
"scholarship" is instead a scarcely veiled insult. And, given the
outmost severity of the subject, it must be taken as an assault on
truth.

The phrase ‘Jews and communism’ immediately brings to mind two sets of associations.
The first image, common in the West, is that of the persecution of Jews in communist
countries: the destruction of religious traditions; the doctors’ plot and, more generally,
Stalin’s anti-Semitism, which almost led to the large-scale murder of Jews; the fate of
refusniks and the discrimination against Jews in the Soviet Union; official anti-Semitism in
Poland in 1967–68. The second set of associations, popular in East Central Europe and
beyond, is expressed as the image of ‘Jewish communism’: Jews as the founders of leftist
movements and as communist leaders in the states that were governed by communist parties;
persecuting Christian religions; preeminent in the bloody communist dictatorships.
Now, the first image is true but it does not represent the total picture of the
relationship of Jews with communism. The second image is false but it does point to certain
facts, specifically to the large number of Jews among active communists. As Andre W. M.
Gerrits puts it: the power of the association of Jews with communism comes from the fact that
“it was based on elements of fiction and reality”.1 The myth of ‘Jewish communism’ is only a
myth. What is real is the existence and importance of Jewish communists. The distinction
made by Gerrits had been made earlier by Jaff Schatz in the most important book-length study
of the topic,2 and also by me.3 This reality has been subjected to surprisingly little research.
The neglected topic—which I propose to consider now—is then not so much ‘Jews
and communism’, not ‘Jews under communism’, and certainly not ‘Jewish communism’, but
rather ‘Jewish communists’. In addition to seeing this topic as a subject for scholarly research
I propose its less objective variant: ‘Jewish communists as a Jewish concern’. My remarks can
serve only as a loose introduction to the problem that in my opinion deserves study by
scholars and reflection by Jews, even by those who have never met a communist.4...................................It is true that the myth of ‘Jewish communism’
(żydokomuna or ‘jewcommies’) has been one of the most sinister ideas that ever shaped

nature of Jewish participation in the communist enterprise. That activity was not done in the
name of the Jews, but they were Jews, nevertheless. A disturbing legacy has been left for all

communities. Discussion of this must not be left to anti-Semites.
Sensitivity and good will is needed to understand the story of Jewish communists. It is
a closed chapter, so it can be fully described. And this can be instructive to all. As the famous

People put great store in quotes and purported quotes, but these are often faked.

Fake Zionist Quotes
Scattered around the Web are numerous pages of "Zionist Quotes" that show Zionism as an evil, racist conspiracy. Many of the quotes are forgeries, hoaxes and inventions. The quotes were fabricated to discredit Israel, Zionism or Jews. not to inform or enlighten anyone. The intent of the doctored quotes may be to "prove" that "Zionism is Racism." and that 'Zionists' planned the transfer of Arabs from Palestine from the start and to demonize Israeli, Zionists and Jews.

How Fake Quotes are Made
Fake quotes are manufactured in a number of ways:

Presenting fiction as fact - A satirical and fictional "interview" with an Israeli general was presented as a real interview of Ariel Sharon supposedly don by Amos Oz.

Confabulation - According to Benny Morris, Ben Gurion wrote to his son that "we must expel the Arabs." These words could not be found in the Hebrew text of his letters, but apparently in an English version.

Quoting out of context - A portion of a speech or letter meant ironically or with an obviously innocent intent is quoted as standalone prose. For example, before the establishment of the state of Israel, David Ben Gurion gave a speech noting that Arabs would be nearly a majority in the new state unless the Zionists acted. Ben Gurion explained envisioned massive Jewish immigration. That part of his remarks is omitted so that the unsuspecting reader thinks that Ben Gurion was proposing "ethnic cleansing."

Omitting key phrases - For example the phrase "We bought the lands from the Arabs" was omitted from a Moshe Dayan quote to make it seem like he admitted that Zionists had stolen all the land.

How to Spot Fake Quotes
Sometimes fake quotes can be spotted because the language is particularly obnoxious, or because what are supposedly Hebrew names or place names have been distorted by someone who does not know the language. An Israeli statesman would not be likely to use racist or violent language in public and no Israeli would have a name like "Ouze." "Quotes" of that type were concocted for a credulous Arab-speaking audience ad translated,

Crude hoaxes can sometimes be because they refer to persons who do not exist. There are no such people as General Ouze Merham or spokesperson Tziporah Menache.

Quotes that are given without an original source citation or with many ellipses are suspicious.

How to Deal with Fake Zionist Quotes
It is not possible to find the origins of every fake quote and hoax and should not be necessary. The burden of proof should be on those who propose the material, since new hoaxes can be fabricated much faster than they are refuted, but it is not so. It is ver time consuming and difficult to prove convincingly that a quote is a hoax.

Some real quotes may be quite obnoxious. You cannot be made to be responsible for every unfortunate utterance of every politician and should not try to defend every utterance.

Always demand to see the original document and quote, not somebody's citation of the quote, part of the document or an inexact translation.

Search the Web with a phrase from the quote to see if someone has already debunked it or if it can be found in the original context. If the quote appears at known hate sites such as rense.com, jewwatch, zundelsite, stormfront, aryannation88, sodahead, electronic inifadah, miftah, or godlike productions, it is probably fake, especially if it cannot be found at respectable and balanced Web sites or other authoritative sources. Google translations are often good enough to verify quotes in languages you do not know.

The printed word, especially in an academic book, or article, has an awesome authority. The invented quote, with it non-existent journal citation, will be often be copied out of the purest motives and in total innocence.

This quote is egregious because even the Nazis admit it is a fake. You can look for it at the Stormfront Web site, where it is also debunked.

The fabrication first appeared supposedly in a Pakistani Web site, but cannot be found there. It was de-bunked not by Zionists, but by anti-Semitic and anti Israel Web sites, apparently because the Web page contained a virus.

The fake quote is like the a doll attached as bait to the trigger of a landmine -- those investigating the influence of Israel will attempt to hunt down Tzipora Manache and will fall into the trap.


It should not be necessary to explain that the fortunecity address probably got the virus by coincidence, and not as the result of a sinister Jew-Zionist conspiracy.

The thing about Icke is that he's following the pattern set by every religious prophet in the past: (EXCEPT Moses and Jesus which were public revealtions) He starts with a "revelation" given to him in a remote location (the top of a mountain in Peru), one that only he can verify and then expects everyone else to take it on faith.

The next step is to issue statements that everyone agrees with... "banks, governments and corporations are corrupt. The world is in a mess"... no shit Sherlock, we already know that!

Then onto half truths and misrepresentations: "everything isn't what we think it is, it's all an illusion"... our subjective experience is a crude representaion of reality, but this doesn't mean it's all illusion. We may only directly experience a small percentage of the real world but what we do percieve is real.

Once he's hooked his audience to this level we then get the punchline: Shape-shifting reptilians, conspiracies and hollow moon theory.

This is done by wearing his audience down with overstated pessimism and then offering himself up as a saviour of the downtrodden. It's a propaganda trick has been performed for thousands of years and is no different to all the established religions currently screwing up the world.

And so begins another day in one of my sections of ENGL-1101, otherwise known as “The Rhetoric of Conspiracy: Narratives of Power and Secrecy in the Digital Age.” In this class, 24 young, brave souls (and myself) dive into a long-running paradialogue with which most of us possess at least a marginal amount of familiarity, namely, the discourse perpetuated via the transmission of conspiracy theories. You’ve probably heard snippets of tales about the man behind the curtain, or the man behind the man behind the curtain, or the alien behind the man behind the curtain, or the demon behind the alien behind the man…you get the idea. Whether it’s speculation about the political machinations behind Bristol Palin’s success (or ultimate failure) on Dancing with the Stars, that latest news report about a strange streak across the Los Angeles skyline, or Donald Trump’s resurrection of the birther movement, I’m betting that you’re familiar with the underlying concept. There are forces out there that govern your life, and you don’t even know about these forces. Or at least, you don’t fully know. You know that you don’t know. Only a select few know what’s really happening in the world. The New World Order. The Illuminati. The Annunaki. Skull & Bones. The gatherers at Bohemian Grove. And on, and on.
Instead of focusing on where and how such ideas generate (you’re welcome to email me for a syllabus), I’d like to address the use value of A) teaching these ideas, and b) encouraging students to mimic the strategies that inform conspiratorial rhetoric.

Let’s start with question A: Why teach this stuff? Why not instead devote my work at Georgia Tech’s to processes of ‘factual’ accumulation? Certainly, there is a vast difference between a more stand line of questioning the specific aims within, say, the history of science, and the opening of the classroom door to months-long discussions of pseudo-secretive cults, “occult religions,” militia groups, devil worshippers, holocaust deniers, and alien abductee support groups.

I’ll cobble together a brief defense. For starters, many perpetrators of fringe discourses are very good at what they do. Consider, for example, David Icke or Alex Jones. Both maintain considerable web presences and demonstrate a clear affinity (at least in terms of presentation) with what we might think of as mainstream news media outlets. Fox News, AM talk radio, NPR, and the Huffington Post all serve as stylistic models worthy of emulation.

Let’s focus on one of the conspiracy community’s more popular (and more controversial) figures: David Icke, who I mentioned in the above student dialogue. Icke first rose to prominence in England during the 1980s, where enjoyed a successful career as a BBC TV sports presenter and, I’m sorry to say, a spokesman for the Green Party. In 1990, however, Icke reportedly became convinced that he was receiving visions from an otherworldly and potentially divine force. He sought counsel from a professional psychic and ruined his mainstream career by announcing on a popular British talk show that he was the son of God.

Icke immediately became a laughing stock and went underground for several years, only to re-emerge as an international conspiracy theory investigator. Since the late ‘90s, Icke has published nearly a dozen books, given lectures in packed auditoriums all over the world, and is a regular mainstay within the discourse of conspiracy culture. He is best known for a book called The Biggest Secret, in which he outs the Bush family, the Rothschilds, the English Royals, the Clintons, Kris Kristofferson, and country music legend Boxcar Willie as part of a secret race of reptilian shapeshifters who seek to colonize this planet for their own insidious purposes. These malevolent creatures regularly engage in dark rituals that involve sexual abuse, satanic chanting, the eating of human flesh, and the drinking of human blood. (Icke calls these cannibalistic rituals, but they wouldn’t really be cannibals if they’re actually lizards, right?). In addition—these lizards—who are actually twelve feet tall—live off “life force” generated by the emission of human fear. So, the more discord they sow in the world, the more fearful we become, and the more powerful they grow. Got it? Ok. (It’s actually much more baroque, but I’m going for the broad strokes here.)

In engaging with Icke’s version of global terrorism, my 1101 students are encouraged to work through a three-step process. First, students will work through a range of Icke’s texts in several forms of media. They read selections from his books, watch a DVD of one his infamous PowerPoint presentations (which typically run from six to eight hours, thoughwe only watch ninety minutes), sift through his website, and watch a Jon Ronson documentary about Icke’s conflicts with the Anti-Defamation League (who have argued that Icke’s lizard-rhetoric is code for Anti-semitic propaganda). Then, students are asked to develop a critical analysis of the material. Disproving Icke's thesis is hardly the point, as that's too easy. Instead, we focus on what’s potentially convincing about Icke’s argument. At what point might an audience be swayed? And how? What makes certain examples work, even if they aren’t necessarily sound? Once these processes have been identified, students are ready for the next step: create their own propaganda. (I should note that student-created propaganda is not unleashed for public consumption. We keep these materials in-house and use them solely as pedagogical models.)

In creating disinfo of their own, students become hyper-aware of the ways in which digital information can be manipulated to produce specific effects. Students are encouraged to create arresting posters, short films, podcasts, and websites. In class, we create a list of rules to break. (For example, “take quotes out of context to unfairly strengthen your case”; “create an argument that relies on feeling as opposed to evidence”; “rely on outdated sources of information.”) At the same time, students are writing reflective responses about their rhetorical processes, in which they acknowledge the conventions they are breaking, and by extension, acknowledge their awareness of said conventions. By doing, students learn what not to do. Contrary to the axiom “learn the rules before you can break the rules,” students signing up for English 1101 learn the rules as they break them while also identifying their rule-breaking regimen.

In addition to its rhetorical use value, students—I like to think—learn the virtue of tolerance as they fall down the rabbit hole of conspiracism. The Rhetoric of Conspiracy is not a course in which students are encouraged to proselytize the idiocy of the conspiracy theorist. Leaping to an inverted position is, I find, not without its own dangers. Instead, the course aims to ask questions about the generation of conspiracist ideology. Such ideas are, of course, systemic. They point to growing distrust in government officials, a structural breakdown within mainstream theological institutions, the rise of the scientific metanarrative, and other dominant social forces. Just because we reject Icke does not mean we should implicitly trust Congress. It’s important to avoid either/or constructions of belief and practice, and the recognition of such alternatives is a strong secondary objective of the course.

I’d like to mention an example of first-day work from one of my students. After our introductory session, students were asked to go home and write about a particular conspiracy in an effort to explain why it isn’t true. (I wanted to get the “it’s not true” line of inquiry out of the way as quickly as possible.) As I sifted through the students’ responses, I randomly selected one to read first. It was about the Tuskeegee experiments, and the student in question explained how this shameful moment in American history (which the student had just discovered on an unnamed website) could not possibly be true. Websites about the experiments were another example of yet another ridiculous government coverup. For the student’s cultural analysis, a general distrust of the systems of white privilege explained the dissemination of the outlandish myth of medical experimentation on illiterate African-American farmworkers.

It’s easy to laugh at David Icke. But as part of a governmental system that did conduct the Tuskeegee experiments, that interred Japanese Americans during WWII, that funded programs to create psychic spies, it’s important for us not to get too cocky. In recent years, we’ve seen firsthand the domestic dangers of conspiratorial thinking—the siege at Ruby Ridge, the disaster at Waco, the anti-technology campaign of Kaczynski, and the Oklahoma bombing, just to name a few. Such cataclysmic events point to moments of governmental instability in which conspiratorial thinking bubble to the surface, and our culture demonstrates its inability to reconcile a dominant discourse with the emergence of a counterdiscourse. (The inability to understand ideological opposition is particularly relevant to any sincere examination of the US government’s handling of the Waco siege.) If we can maintain our critical faculties without dismissing those who exist outside our own realms of the real—or at least, not dismissing “them” out of hand—perhaps the next generation will be smarter than we have been and avoid a few of the dangerous cultural collisions that we have not. In the hopes of furthering that goal, I’m even willing to keep David Icke on the syllabus next year.
