PRINCESS Mary of Denmark - formerly Mary Donaldson of Hobart -
arrived in Sydney today for the start of a six-day official visit of her
homeland.
The 39-year-old princess was all smiles as she touched down on home soil.
Crown Prince Frederik, 43, who flew in later with the rest of the family,
will join Mary on their first official visit to Australia since 2008.
The royal couple will tour the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition tomorrow at
Tamarama, where they will view a work by Danish sculptor Keld Moseholm.
The display holds a special significance for the pair, who visited it
during their early dating days after they met at Sydney nightclub during
the 2000 Olympics.
They are then meeting with Governor-General Quentin Bryce at Admiralty House.
Their six-day visit to Australia will include stops at Canberra,
Melbourne, western Victoria and Broken Hill in NSW.

DENMARK'S Crown Princess Mary has arrived in Sydney, introducing her 10-month-old twins to Australia.
Video footage showed the Danish princess walking through Sydney
airport this morning, holding her youngest daughter, Princess Josephine.
Princess Josephine's twin brother, Prince Vincent, was held in the arms of a
nanny as assistants grappled with bags, suitcases and baby seats galore.
Crown Prince Frederik is expected to arrive later today, possibly with the
older children, Prince Christian, 6, and Princess Isabella, 4.
The royal couple will kick off their two-day Sydney visit with a visit
tomorrow to the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition in Bondi, where they
will view a work by Danish sculptor Keld Moseholm.
They will also present the People's Choice and Children's Choice awards.

Hundreds of thousands of migrants have ‘disappeared’ at the stroke of a pen under a new official counting system.
The method has led to apparent large falls in the numbers of migrants thought to live in London and other major cities.
The change has provoked fury among council leaders who say the immigrant populations
of their districts have been grossly underestimated by government statisticians.
Migrants 'disappear': London, Manchester, Bristol, Cambridge and Oxford
are among cities who have had 'large downward revisions' from
the new counting method
Westminster and Kensington in London, Manchester, Bristol, Oxford and Cambridge
are among places thought to have had their estimated populations reduced
by many thousands by the Office for National Statistics.
Colin Barrow, Tory leader of Westminster, said: ‘After four years of work
supposedly improving migration estimates, the ONS apparently still has
little idea how many migrants are in this country or where they live and
work.
‘Our incoming migrant population appears to have dropped by 17 per cent over four
years; you only have to go out into the bars and restaurants in the West End to see
that migrants come to Westminster to live and work in much greater numbers than this.’

which has become the sixth most crowded major country in the world,
the MigrationWatch think-tank said last week.
Last year net migration was 239,000.
The new estimates method, to be used from next year onwards, uses the same source
of immigration statistics the ONS has always used. This is the
International Passenger Survey, a check on intentions of arrivals at air
and sea ports and on the Eurostar.
From this researchers use a complex formula, based on other official population
databases, to estimate the number of yearly arrivals.
Under the new method, this formula has been tweaked, resulting in changes to
the estimated numbers arriving at certain towns and cities.
Only 4,000?
The new estimate pins the number of migrants in 2009 in Westminster
to just 4,000.
Tory leader Colin Barrow finds this seriously questionable.
Some have fallen while others have risen, but the total remains unchanged.
Westminster’s migrant population has been reduced by 10,000, and Manchester’s and
Bristol’s each by 30,000. According to ONS briefing papers, Kensington and Chelsea,
Oxford and Cambridge have had ‘quite large downward revisions’.
Mr Barrow said: ‘We would seriously question the estimate that fewer than 4,000
migrants came to Westminster in the 2009 financial year to seek work.
'We have seen more people registering with doctors and paying council tax in
Westminster, so we fail to understand how the government statisticians can be so wrong.’
Councils can lose millions in Treasury grants if Whitehall cuts their population estimates.
The ONS was scheduled to publish papers about the new migration counting
system last week, but failed to do so. Some places are said to show a
higher count, such as Newham, East London, with a 13 per cent increase.
The ONS declined to comment yesterday.

Hundreds of thousands of migrants have ‘disappeared’ at the stroke of a pen under a new official counting system.
The method has led to apparent large falls in the numbers of migrants thought to live in London and other major cities.
The change has provoked fury among council leaders who say the immigrant populations
of their districts have been grossly underestimated by government statisticians.
Migrants 'disappear': London, Manchester, Bristol, Cambridge and Oxford
are among cities who have had 'large downward revisions' from
the new counting method
Westminster and Kensington in London, Manchester, Bristol, Oxford and Cambridge
are among places thought to have had their estimated populations reduced
by many thousands by the Office for National Statistics.
Colin Barrow, Tory leader of Westminster, said: ‘After four years of work
supposedly improving migration estimates, the ONS apparently still has
little idea how many migrants are in this country or where they live and
work.
‘Our incoming migrant population appears to have dropped by 17 per cent over four
years; you only have to go out into the bars and restaurants in the West End to see
that migrants come to Westminster to live and work in much greater numbers than this.’

which has become the sixth most crowded major country in the world,
the MigrationWatch think-tank said last week.
Last year net migration was 239,000.
The new estimates method, to be used from next year onwards, uses the same source
of immigration statistics the ONS has always used. This is the
International Passenger Survey, a check on intentions of arrivals at air
and sea ports and on the Eurostar.
From this researchers use a complex formula, based on other official population
databases, to estimate the number of yearly arrivals.
Under the new method, this formula has been tweaked, resulting in changes to
the estimated numbers arriving at certain towns and cities.
Only 4,000?
The new estimate pins the number of migrants in 2009 in Westminster
to just 4,000.
Tory leader Colin Barrow finds this seriously questionable.
Some have fallen while others have risen, but the total remains unchanged.
Westminster’s migrant population has been reduced by 10,000, and Manchester’s and
Bristol’s each by 30,000. According to ONS briefing papers, Kensington and Chelsea,
Oxford and Cambridge have had ‘quite large downward revisions’.
Mr Barrow said: ‘We would seriously question the estimate that fewer than 4,000
migrants came to Westminster in the 2009 financial year to seek work.
'We have seen more people registering with doctors and paying council tax in
Westminster, so we fail to understand how the government statisticians can be so wrong.’
Councils can lose millions in Treasury grants if Whitehall cuts their population estimates.
The ONS was scheduled to publish papers about the new migration counting
system last week, but failed to do so. Some places are said to show a
higher count, such as Newham, East London, with a 13 per cent increase.
The ONS declined to comment yesterday.

million - to Indonesia for disaster relief and humanitarian work in
the first military swap of its kind between the two countries.
Three high-speed Australian naval vessels
will also be deployed to Indonesian waters
to launch an offensive against people smugglers.
The agreements struck yesterday in Indonesia's resort island of Bali
between Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Indonesian President Susilo
Bambang Yudhoyono marked a series of new strategic partnerships in
what appeared a peace offering to soothe tensions about Australia's deal
to host more US troops on Australian soil.
The aircraft, which need about $25 million spent to restore them to airworthiness,
were due to be sold on the open market as Australia upgrades its fleet.
But the Australian Defence Force has agreed to give them to the Indonesian
military, following a request for more resources to boost disaster relief across the region.
"These aircraft
are important to
the movement of people
and equipment and food
in times of difficulty,"
Ms Gillard said.
In a
further strengthening of military ties,
Australia will provide support for
an Indonesian armed forces
peacekeeping centre.

Fairfax Who’s Who
The first name to be conjured with in any history of
the Fairfax family is the little known name Skirpenbeck. He was alleged
to be a descendant of the Danish invaders of the 10th century who had a liaison with an Anglo-Saxon female and produced a son who was the ancestor of Richard who, in the 12th/13th century took the surname Faeger Fax later changed to Fairfax.
Many early members of the family entered the military, the most famous being General Sir Thomas Fairfax who was the first person to actually train an army and who led the Parliamentary troops to victory in the English 17th century civil wars.
Other members of the family joined the navy, one of whom was Vice Admiral Sir William George Fairfax
who took part in General Woolf’s capture of Quebec. Another Admiral,
Robert Fairfax, played a prominent part in the taking of Gibraltar in
1704 and was richly rewarded by Queen Anne. He later became an MP.
In the 17th century William Fairfax and his family crossed the Atlantic to join Captain John Smith and “Princess” Pocahontas, the first settlers in Jamestown but all were later killed by Indians.
The 6th Lord Fairfax
also made his way to Virginia in 1746 where he befriended the youthful
George Washington and gave him his first job surveying part of his
enormous estate of 5 million acres. Fairfax County was named after him.
In the 19th century,
John Fairfax and his family from Warwickshire emigrated to Australia and became newspaper magnates some of whom were later knighted.
Mary Somerville
nee Fairfax died in 1872 when she was 92 and sometimes referred to as
“the Queen of Science”. For the time when women were expected to remain
uneducated she wrote books on molecular and microscopic science,
physical geography, etc and was also a talented painter and pianist.
Following her death, Oxford University named a college after her.
Another woman of distinction was Eve Fairfax who was known for her
beauty and a model for Rodin before her death at the age of 106.
In the arts world Robert Fairfax
(spelt at the time Fayrfax) was the musician/composer to Henry VIII and
referred to as “the first gentleman”. He has been described as one of
the least known but most influential of English musicians. His music has
been recorded and is available on several CDs.
More
recently, in an interesting contrast to medieval England, Frankie
Fairfax, was a well known American jazz musician who played with Dizzy
Gillespie. In another aspect of music, Andrew and Anneleen Fairfax are
violin makers and restorers.
Fairfaxes have also featured in literature, particularly poetry, with Edward Fairfax,
the translator of Tasso, and more recently John Fairfax, who died in
2009, a friend of Dylan Thomas and Ted Hughes who was responsible for
creating the Avon Foundation. Other notable contemporary Fairfaxes
include brothers Michael Fairfax and Jo Fairfax, both sculptors.
Family members have also achieved supporting success, most notably Alan Fairfax, who played cricket for Australia and Russell Fairfax,
also Australian and a famous rugby league player. Closer to home,
Ray Fairfax, played soccer for West Bromwich Albion (an English soccer
team).
Royal
associations with the Fairfax family continue to today, with Princes
William and Harry being descendants of 16 th Century nobleman, Sir
Nicholas Fairfax, through their mother Diana Spencer.

AN inquest into Peter Roebuck's suicide has taken a twist with
forensic experts to determine whether semen samples taken from a
bedsheet match the DNA of the acclaimed cricket journalist.
It is alleged that Roebuck's semen spilled on to a bedspread as he
attempted to have sex with Zimbabwean man Itai Gondo, who has lodged a
sexual assault complaint against Roebuck.
Forensic analysis will ascertain whether the semen samples match Roebuck's DNA.
The development comes as Mr Gondo, a 26-year-old IT student, spoke out
again yesterday to provide more detailed accounts of his dealings with
the journalist.
In one chilling claim, Mr Gondo accused Roebuck of
playing mind games to trick him into stripping,
alleging the journalist described it as
"peeling off the layers to get to the real me".
Mr Gondo was taken to a Cape Town hospital by South African police
following Roebuck's death to provide DNA and blood samples to a state
pathologist.
With the inquest expected to take at least a month, Mr Gondo
yesterday claimed Roebuck leapt from his hotel room window to avoid the
shame of defending himself against sexual assault charges.
"As far as I am concerned he took his own life because he didn't want to face the law," he told a South African newspaper.
"He didn't want to face up to what he did.
"So it's not my problem. He is the architect of his own demise."
Mr Gondo, who wanted to take his own life following the alleged incident,
said Roebuck has robbed him of his day in court.
"The more I thought through it, I realised I wanted my day in court so I could move on,"
he said.
"I kept thinking if I keep quiet what if he does the same thing to another guy?
"Then I'm going to regret it knowing that I could have stopped this person in his tracks.
"I was feeling suicidal. I was hiding out in my room. I couldn't eat and was having nightmares.
"In desperation I messaged a very good friend in New York who is like a big brother
and told him what had happened.
"I told him I feel violated as a man . . . that I was shocked I couldn't
fight him off and it makes me feel like a sissy and a pushover.
"This man took advantage of me.
"He preyed on the fact that I was reaching out to him
and trusted him and he did this to me."
Mr Gondo, who met Roebuck via Facebook,
shut down his account on the social network following the journalist's death.
South African newspaper said Mr Gondo reactivated his account briefly
to show its reporter his final Facebook message on November 12,
the day Roebuck plunged six storeys to his death.
The private message to Roebuck read:
"It's funny how you ask me how I am doing
as if what you did to me you find that justifiable?
"So that was your intention all along?
To lure me and pretend you were interested in forming some father-like relationship,
yet your intention was to do the sick, pervert disgusting thing you did to me?
"Well Mr Roebuck, you can stuff whatever form of support you
blatantly faked to be interested in. You have greatly humiliated me and
I feel very violated, disgusted with myself, your acts were of
the purest, sickest kind.
"It makes sense why you pretend to help out orphans,
whilst you prey on their financial difficulty for your perverted satisfaction.
"I shudder to even think what sick sex-related things you're doing to
those 17 boys staying with you!
"I don't need your assistance, I don't shake hands with the devil,
don't bother replying for I will block you after this message.
"One day the long arm of the law
will catch up with your evil misdeeds, rest assured,

The revalation came to Professor Andrew Parker during a visit to Rome. He was in the Sistine Chapel, gazing up at Michelangelo's awesome ceiling paintings, when a realisation struck him with dizzying force.
'A Biblical enigma exists that is on the one hand so cryptic it has remained camouflaged for millennia, and on the other so obvious one cannot miss it.'
The enigma is that the order of Creation as described in the Book of Genesis, and so powerfully depicted in the Sistine Chapel by the greatest artist of the Renaissance, has been precisely, eerily confirmed by modern evolutionary science.
Yet how on earth could this be possible? And why had nobody noticed it before?
Such was the starting point of Parker's jaw-dropping new book, The Genesis Enigma: an astounding work which seeks to prove that the ancient Hebrew writers of the Book of Genesis knew all about evolution - 3,000 years before Darwin.
It takes a journey back through aeons of geological time, and also into the minds and imaginations of the ancient Israelites.
Andrew Parker is a leading scientist in his field: a research fellow at Oxford University, research leader at the Natural History Museum, and as if that weren't enough, a professor at Shanghai's Jiao Tong university.
As a scientist he never paid much heed to the Book of Genesis, assuming, like most of his colleagues, that such primitive mythology - which is believed to have been compiled from several sources between 950 and 500 BC - has long since been 'disproved' by hard scientific fact.
But after his Sistine Chapel moment, he went back to look at Genesis in more detail. And what he read astonished him. It was even, he says, 'slightly scary'.
Somehow - God alone knew how - the writer or writers of that ancient text had described how the evolution of life on earth took place in precise detail and perfect order.
Our ancestors possessed a truly timeless wisdom It is always disturbing and haunting to encounter an ancient wisdom that seems to anticipate or even exceed our own.
More fanciful writers immediately start to theorise wildly: that those who built the pyramids, or Stonehenge, must have been guided by super-intelligent aliens, that sort of thing.
Andrew Parker, a scientist and proud of it, has no time for such twaddle. But he does gradually come to understand, in the course of his investigations, that our ancestors of thousands of years ago, though they may not have had iPods and plasma-screen televisions, nevertheless possessed a wisdom that was, quite literally, timeless: as true now as it was then.
In the Book of Genesis, God first and most famously creates heaven and earth, but 'without form', and commands: 'Let there be light.' A perfect description of the Big Bang, that founding moment of our universe some 13 billion years ago, an unimaginable explosion of pure energy and matter 'without form' out of nothing - the primordial Biblical 'void'.
He then creates the dry land out of the waters, but it is the water that comes first. As Parker points out, scientists today understand very similarly that water is indeed crucial for life.
When 'astrobiologists' look into space for signs of life on other planets, the first thing they look for is the possible presence of water.
On the third day, we are told: 'God said, "Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so."'
Now factually speaking, grass didn't evolve until much later. In the Triassic and Jurassic epochs, the dinosaurs knew only plants such as giant conifers and tree ferns. But since grass did not in fact evolve until much later, a sternly literal-minded scientist would declare the Bible wrong, and consign it to the nearest wheelie bin.
But wait a minute, says Parker. If you take 'grass, herb and tree' to mean photosynthesising life in general, then this is, once again, spot on.
The very life forms on earth were single-celled bacteria, but the first truly viable bacteria were the 'cyanobacteria' - those that had learned to photosynthesise.
As a result, they began to expire oxygen, creating an atmosphere that could go on to support more and more life. They were the key to life on earth.
Naturally, says Parker, 'the ancient Israelites would have been oblivious to any single-celled life form, let alone cyanobacteria', but 'grass' as a loose description of life forms that photosynthesise?
On the fourth day, Genesis famously becomes confusing. On the first day, remember, God has already created light, and made Day and Night. But it isn't until day four that he makes the lights in heaven, the greater light to rule the day and the lesser the night.
Hang on - so he made 'Day' three days before he made the Sun? Houston, I think we have a problem.
Yet the writers of Genesis were just as well aware as us, surely, that the sunrise causes the day. You don't need a degree in astronomy to work that one out. What on earth did they mean?
Here, The Genesis Enigma comes up with a stunningly ingenious answer. For Parker argues that day four refers to the evolution of vision.
Until the first creatures on earth evolved eyes, in a sense, the sun and moon didn't exist. There was no creature on earth to see them, nor the light they cast.
When Genesis says: 'Let there be lights... To divide the day from the night,' it is talking about eyes.
'The very first eye on earth effectively turned on the lights for animal behaviour,' writes Professor Parker, 'and consequently for further rapid evolution.'
Almost overnight, life suddenly grew vastly more complex. Predators were able to hunt far more efficiently, and so prey had to evolve fast too - or get eaten.
The moment that there were 'lights', or eyes, then life exploded into all its infinite variety.
And yet again, that's what Genesis says happened, and in the correct environment too. In the sea.
For on the very next day of Creation, the fifth day: 'God said, "Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life."'
That is exactly what happened. Life that had hitherto been lived in the dark, by simple, slow-moving, worm-like creatures, erupted into dazzling diversity. We know all about it from the world famous Burgess Shale fossils.
They were discovered in the summer of 1909 by one Charles Doolittle Walcott, on holiday with his family in the Canadian Rockies. Walcott began to chip away at the shale with his geological hammer, and quite by chance stumbled upon one of the greatest finds in all science.
For the shale records what happened on our planet around 508 million years ago, long before the first dinosaurs: the 'Cambrian expolosion,' which most scientists now think was indeed the direct result of the evolution of vision.
Life on earth exploded in all its infinite variety The life-forms discovered look like nothing else: fabulous, phantasmagoric, alien beings. One had five eyes, and a long wavy snout with jaws on the end. Another looked like an octopus with its head stuck in a beaker, and another can only be described as 'a swimming pea with a pair of beady eyes, bull's horns, a pair of "hands" and a fish's tail.'
Others resemble balls of spines, vase-shaped pin-cushions, or badminton shuttlecocks with chameleon-like tongues. Anyone who doubts the power of evolution by natural selection only has to look at the Burgess Shale fossils.
How does Genesis describe the teeming aquatic life of the Cambrian explosion? 'And God said, "Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life." ' Immediately following the creation of vision.
How did the writer/writers know that life suddenly diversified into this rich and staggering variety, under the oceans, not on land? Why would a very much land-based people, pastoralists and shepherds, even think like this?
After the Cambrian come the Ordovician, Silurian and Devonian periods - or the appearance of 'great whales', as Genesis succinctly puts it.
How better to describe those epochs which gave us such monsters of the deep as Dunkleosteus, a carnivorous armoured fish whose appearance, says Parker, was 'simply terrifying'. Some 35ft long, 'the size of a small coach', with massive, bone-crunching jaws, even its eyes were armoured.
And after the sea monsters come the birds, the animals, cattle, and finally, homo sapiens. All present and correct, and all still in the right order. Once again, 'In describing how the planet and life around us came to be, the writer of the Genesis narrative got it disturbingly right'.
So what should we make of the extraordinary findings of The Genesis Enigma?
Professor Parker is clear on this subject. 'It would be a great shame if my findings were either misused in an attempt to suggest that scientists themselves are unsure about science, or pounded out of all recognition into support of the seven-day creation premise.'
There is no doubt that literal-minded Creationists do a disservice to the triumphant achievements of modern science, and to the beauty and poetry of the Bible. Evolution is taking place around us all the time. It's why the MRSA superbug has become so dangerously immune to antibiotics, why the race is on to beat the swine flu virus.
Nevertheless, when Parker comes to explaining how the writers of Genesis knew what they knew, he can only conclude that it was due to 'divine intervention', or 'a lucky guess'. Since the odds of the latter seem fantastically remote, Parker tentatively suggests the former.

BANNING cruise ships carrying heavy fuel oil from the waters around
Antarctica will cut the risk of coastal pollution, a new report says.
The federal parliament treaties committee has recommended Australia
ratify an international treaty amendment outlawing the use of heavy
fuel oil in Antarctica, in a report released on Wednesday.
Committee chairman Kelvin Thomson said
increased cruise ship activity in Antarctic waters posed a pollution risk.
The extreme weather conditions in Antarctica meant if spills did occur the decomposition
of the oil would be slow, he said.
Under the treaty, ships involved in rescue work and those owned by
governments such as research vessels, naval vessels and auxiliary
vessels would be exempt.
"While Australian government flagged
vessels are exempt from the treaty, it is worth noting that Australia
continues to demonstrate its leadership in marine environment protection
by ensuring its own vessels, do not use or carry heavy fuel oils," Mr
Thomson said.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority will enforce the new
regulations with port inspections, including monitoring of the oil
record books.
The research vessel chartered by the Australian Antarctic Division,
the Aurora Australis, is already compliant.
However, the division contracts Russian flagged vessels for supply delivery
and waste removal, which use fuel that would be banned under the treaty.
The report said this fleet was nearing 30 years old and was
expected to be replaced within the next five years.

Home owned by mining heiress
MINING heiress Angela Bennett has sold her Perth waterfront mansion for
an Australian record price of $57.5 million.
The Saunders Street, Mosman Park property was sold to fellow mining
magnate Chris Ellison well below the original asking price of $70 million.
The selling agent for the property was Willie Porteous,
husband of Rose Porteous, whose former husband the late Lang Hancock was
the business partner of Ms Bennett's father, the late Peter Wright.
The property has been on the market since 2007.
Mr Ellison, the executive director of publicly listed mining contracting
and engineering firm Mineral Resources, has a reported stake in the
company of about $300 million.
A former managing director of the CSI Group, his company's website says
he was instrumental in developing the "build, own, operate concept of contract crushing
in the resource and mining sector''.
Ms Bennett fell out with the late Mr Hancock's daughter Gina Rinehart in 2001,
initiating legal action with her brother Michael Wright to claim ownership of
a 25 per cent stake in the $4 billion Rhodes Ridge iron tenement in the Pilbara.
The 7567 square metre riverside mansion is made up of three self-contained buildings
and has its own cinema, gym, pool, boathouse, private jetty and tennis court.
Its sale price beat the record set last year by a $45 million Vaucluse waterfront property
in Sydney's east. The previous Perth record was a Claremont property sold in 2007
for $23 million.
Mr Porteous told Perthnow that he last held the record for selling Australia's
most expensive house in 1980 with a sale of just $2,150,000.
"A lot of people who have been hesitant about taking positions in the

Home owned by mining heiress
MINING heiress Angela Bennett has sold her Perth waterfront mansion for
an Australian record price of $57.5 million.
The Saunders Street, Mosman Park property was sold to fellow mining
magnate Chris Ellison well below the original asking price of $70 million.
The selling agent for the property was Willie Porteous,
husband of Rose Porteous, whose former husband the late Lang Hancock was
the business partner of Ms Bennett's father, the late Peter Wright.
The property has been on the market since 2007.
Mr Ellison, the executive director of publicly listed mining contracting
and engineering firm Mineral Resources, has a reported stake in the
company of about $300 million.
A former managing director of the CSI Group, his company's website says
he was instrumental in developing the "build, own, operate concept of contract crushing
in the resource and mining sector''.
Ms Bennett fell out with the late Mr Hancock's daughter Gina Rinehart in 2001,
initiating legal action with her brother Michael Wright to claim ownership of
a 25 per cent stake in the $4 billion Rhodes Ridge iron tenement in the Pilbara.
The 7567 square metre riverside mansion is made up of three self-contained buildings
and has its own cinema, gym, pool, boathouse, private jetty and tennis court.
Its sale price beat the record set last year by a $45 million Vaucluse waterfront property
in Sydney's east. The previous Perth record was a Claremont property sold in 2007
for $23 million.
Mr Porteous told Perthnow that he last held the record for selling Australia's
most expensive house in 1980 with a sale of just $2,150,000.
"A lot of people who have been hesitant about taking positions in the
market are now going to be very relaxed, knowing that investing in the

“The Australian Offshore Mineral Locations map provides the first
spatial understanding of mineral locations on the seafloor around
Australia and is a wonderful example of collaboration and partnerships
producing great results,” says CSIRO Chief Executive, Dr Geoff Garrett.
“The project is the result of an initiative from the Wealth from
Oceans Flagship working with its partners to promote knowledge and
growth in a new and very exciting industry. This map is the outcome of a
truly national and integrated approach.
“At present, land exploration and mineral production is a massive
industry, however, Australia is only beginning to look at similar
operations on the seafloor. There is now exciting potential for a
possible future marine minerals industry.”
Wealth from Oceans Flagship Director, Craig Roy, says that whereas
Australia is the first country in the world to develop an offshore map
of this type, its development has, perhaps, not been before its time.
“Our earliest recorded terrestrial resource map was produced in 1799
so it has taken over two centuries to refocus our attention,” Mr Roy
says.
“By building a picture of the seabed minerals in tandem with our
ecological knowledge of these areas, we can ensure that we address any
activities in a responsible manner, taking into account the long-term
implications for our economy and environment.
“The release of this map is an important and critical first step in
developing public, governmental and industry interest in our offshore
minerals.
“The mission for the Flagship is to combine the scientific expertise
and resources from across Australia’s research community, not just
CSIRO, to provide Australia with research capabilities previously not
achievable to the community and industry. This map is a great example of
this collaborative approach.”

A train line damaged by an earthquake

Here is a list of some of the major earthquakes to have occured in Australia in recent times:
1 March 1954, Adelaide, South Australia
Adelaide was awakened by a loud rumbling sound. This was followed by shaking, severe enough to crack walls and loosen plaster and chimneys from many houses. Although minor compared to many overseas quakes, the Adelaide earthquake was (at magnitude 5.4) severe enough to cause damage estimated at $350 million (1997 values). No serious injuries were reported.
October 1968, Meckering, Western Australia
One of the more serious Australian earthquakes in fairly recent years occurred at the small town of Meckering. Residents reported seeing ground waves as well as experiencing difficulty when driving as the 6.9 Richter magnitude earthquake struck. Old buildings collapsed, railway lines were buckled and pipelines fractured, and a 37 kilometres long fault scarp (up to 2.5 metres high) was caused. Sixteen injuries were reported and the total cost of damage estimated $50 million.
22 January 1988, Tennant Creek, Northern Territory
Significant earthquakes of magnitudes 6.3, 6.4 and 6.8 occurred near Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. These resulted in large, long ground ruptures and a 35 kilometre fault (up to 2 metre displacement) which warped underground gas pipelines, but caused only minor damage to the hospital and some homes in the town.
28 December 1989, Newcastle, New South Wales
At 10.27am, Newcastle, Australia's sixth largest city, was partially devastated by a moderate earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter Scale. The Newcastle earthquake, the first lethal one in Australia, claimed 13 lives.
The devastation to buildings and other structures was extensive, which was unusual for a relatively-small magnitude earthquake. This was due mainly to an underlying, thin layer of alluvium, which appeared to magnify ground motion (shaking). The epicentre was located 15km West Southwest of the city centre, near Boolaroo.
August 1994, Ellalong, New South Wales
A damaging earthquake again affected the Hunter region of NSW, this time in the Ellalong-Cessnock area. Measuring 5.4 on the Richter Scale, it became our third most-damaging. Several homes, hotels and other buildings suffered seriously and up to 1,000 homes were partly damaged. Infrastructure, commercial and industrial losses also occurred. Insurance payouts were $38 million and total damage costs exceeded $150 million (1997 values).

A future eruption in any of these regions would be unlikely to come from an existing volcano (as the volcanoes there are generally considered to be 'once only’ erupters).
Rather, future eruptions would occur at new sites nearby.
The geological record shows that new volcanoes in these areas have erupted perhaps every 2000 years in the past 40,000 years—and given there has not been a major eruption there for the past 5000 years, a significant eruption seems well overdue. " (3)

Asylum seekers will live and work in communities. Source: HWT Image LibraryTHOUSANDS of asylum seekers are expected to flood the suburbs as the
Federal Government rolls out bridging visas allowing boat people to
live and work in the community and collect welfare.
Immigration Minister Chris Bowen has handed out the first bridging
visas for 27 men, mostly Afghans and Sri Lankans, whose refugee claims
are being assessed.
Mr Bowen said the men would be released from
detention centres, including Melbourne, in coming days - with 100 a
month to follow.
It comes as a secret government briefing note
seen by the Herald Sun suggests thousands of boat people will soon be
transferred into the community.
The NSW Government note reports a
warning by the Immigration Department this week that arrivals will
balloon when word spreads that asylum seekers arriving by boat are no
longer to be held in detention.
"Once it is widely known that
IMAs will live in the community while being processed, the level of
entries into Australia are very likely to escalate," the note said.

The note followed a meeting between Department of Immigration officials and the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet.
The
radical move to a softened onshore processing system comes after the
collapse of PM Julia Gillard's Malaysia deal and after the arrival of
more than 300 asylum seekers this week.
Mr Bowen said the first
batch of asylum seekers to be given bridging visas were long-term
detainees who have cleared health, security and identity checks, and
will live with friends or family.
From next month, at least 100 people a month will be released while their asylum claims are processed.
A person's time in detention, their behavioural record and their family's ability to support them will decide who is chosen.
"People
who are assessed to pose an unacceptable risk to the community will
remain in an immigration detention facility," Mr Bowen said.
Those
released will be able to get jobs and up to $215 a week in means-tested
payments, but will not qualify for Centrelink benefits.

“The Australian Offshore Mineral Locations map provides the first
spatial understanding of mineral locations on the seafloor around
Australia and is a wonderful example of collaboration and partnerships
producing great results,” says CSIRO Chief Executive, Dr Geoff Garrett.
“The project is the result of an initiative from the Wealth from
Oceans Flagship working with its partners to promote knowledge and
growth in a new and very exciting industry. This map is the outcome of a
truly national and integrated approach.
“At present, land exploration and mineral production is a massive
industry, however, Australia is only beginning to look at similar
operations on the seafloor. There is now exciting potential for a
possible future marine minerals industry.”
Wealth from Oceans Flagship Director, Craig Roy, says that whereas
Australia is the first country in the world to develop an offshore map
of this type, its development has, perhaps, not been before its time.
“Our earliest recorded terrestrial resource map was produced in 1799
so it has taken over two centuries to refocus our attention,” Mr Roy
says.
“By building a picture of the seabed minerals in tandem with our
ecological knowledge of these areas, we can ensure that we address any
activities in a responsible manner, taking into account the long-term
implications for our economy and environment.
“The release of this map is an important and critical first step in
developing public, governmental and industry interest in our offshore
minerals.
“The mission for the Flagship is to combine the scientific expertise
and resources from across Australia’s research community, not just
CSIRO, to provide Australia with research capabilities previously not
achievable to the community and industry. This map is a great example of

Blue Diamond Stakes (G1) and Australia Made Stakes (G1).
Miss Jakeo
has a 2yo Fusaichi Pegasus filly named Fusakeo that was purchased by
Star Thoroughbreds for $140,000 at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale, a
yearling filly by Encosta de Lago, and was covered by General Nediym
last spring.
Miss Judgement is one of 14 stakes-winners for
Woodlands Stud’s Strategic (pictured), who is coming off one of his most

AUSTRALIAN racing's most lavish supporter, Bob Ingham,
has sold his vast Woodlands Stud operation
to the ruler of Dubai for morethan $460 million.
The
deal will result in global thoroughbred giant Sheikh Mohammed bin
Rashid al-Maktoum's Darley Stud dominating the breeding and racing of
thoroughbreds in Australia after it adds
Woodlands' 1000 horses, two studs, a pre-training farm and racing stables in Sydney and Melbourne to its operation.
Ingham
and his late brother, Jack, established Inghams Enterprises, which
employs around 7000 people, mostly in its poultry business.
The
brothers built the biggest racing and breeding operation in Australia
through investments including the showpiece Woodlands Stud in the NSW
Hunter Valley and
a state-of-the art training complex at Warwick Farm in south-west Sydney.
The stunning deal, described by Ingham as "a win-win for all parties", is subject
to approval by the Foreign Investment Review Board. A decision is expected
within three weeks.
The sale includes everything involved in running the business,
with Ingham retaining only the family's famous cerise racing silks.
Included among the thoroughbred stock are Ingham's former champion gallopers
Octagonal and Lonhro, which both stand at Woodlands Stud, along with a bevy of
current racing stock including Golden Slipper winner Forensics.
Another Ingham racehorse in training is Musket, a three-quarter brother to
three-time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva.
Musket was bought by Ingham for a then record $2.5 million.
Sheikh Mohammed is the world's biggest owner of thoroughbreds,
which he races under the Godolphin banner.
"The
sale of the bloodstock business was not something I was contemplating,"
Ingham said yesterday in a joint statement with Sheikh Mohammed.
"Once approached by Darley, I decided it was an opportunity that I should accept.
"The sale is on a 'walk- in, walk-out' basis. I will, however, be keeping our racing colours
and will continue to race horses."
Sheikh
Mohammed's team has spent the past two weeks inspecting the Woodlands
Stud operation and will now have two studs in the Hunter Valley along
with one in Victoria
and the Inghams' Cootamundra farm.
"I have long admired the love Australians have for the horse and for racing," Sheikh Mohammed said in the statement.
"The Ingham family have made a significant contribution to Australian racing and to
the thoroughbred and I am looking forward to building on their success. I am delighted
to be making this commitment."

CHEROKEE Rose stud is an impressive thoroughbred horse property

Danny and Hanna Rose bought it in 2003 and began constructing their breeding,
agistment and pre-training stud in 2004.

toilet and horse wash, and a lock-up tool room, machinery shed and a workshop.
There is also a six-horse walking machine, four stallion yards, support

A ROGUE Border Agency official was jailed for seven years yesterday after allowing illegal immigrants to stay in Britain.
Samuel Shoyeju granted the “treasured status” of indefinite leave to remain
to at least 44 non-EU residents, none of whom had the right to be in the UK.
It left the immigrants free to claim benefits and apply for full citizenship.
Only 14 of them have been traced.
There was no proof Nigerian-born Shoyeju’s crimes were motivated by money but
thousands of pounds did enter his bank account, Basildon Crown Court heard.
Judge Christopher Mitchell told him: “Actions like yours call into question in
the public mind the entire integrity of the immigration system when, at the
present time, immigration and immigration decisions are extremely sensitive.”
Lucy Kennedy, prosecuting, said: “This case has cost the taxpayer a
significant amount of money, both in terms of the investigation and in
terms of those who remain in the country untraced.
“He abused the system he was employed to protect and he did so for his own
selfish reasons, not out of some misguided sense of altruism. It was a breach of trust
which will no doubt undermine confidence in public servants employed to protect UK borders.”
Shoyeju, 53, of Canvey Island, Essex, worked as a line manager at
the Croydon immigration headquarters.
He amended and destroyed records to cover his tracks and used colleagues’
date stamps and accessed secure databases with other people’s sign-ons
to divert suspicion away from himself.
Shoyeju arrived in the UK in 1988
and was allowed to remain until 1991 on a student visa.
The father-of-three was granted indefinite leave to remain
after marrying a British woman and was granted full citizenship in 1996.
Joe Dugdale, of the UK Border Agency, said: “Samuel Shoyeju abused the trust placed
in him as a public servant and his sentence reflects the severity of his crimes.
“The
UK Border Agency expects the highest levels of integrity and behaviour
from its staff. The vast majority of staff carry out their jobs with
professionalism and integrity.”

GUNMEN burst into a restaurant
in Mali's most famous city of Timbuktu overnight,
grabbed four tourists dining there and executed one
when he refused to climb into their truck,
said a witness and an official who inspected the body.
The armed men entered the Amanar restaurant around 2.30pm on Friday
local time and pointed their guns at four tourists dining inside, said
Moussa Boubacar, a client at the restaurant.
The four followed the gunmen outside, but when the gunmen tried to
make them enter a vehicle, one of the tourists refused, Boubacar said.
The kidnappers opened fire, killing him on the spot, Boubacar said.
Their nationalities could not immediately be confirmed, but witnesses describe them
as European.
Dramane Diallo, the regional director of Timbuktu's civil protection division,
said that he rushed to the scene and found the corpse of an elderly white man,
who locals said was the tourist that had refused to enter the car.

Until a few years ago, Timbuktu was one of the most visited
destinations in Africa, but it is now one of the many former tourist
hotspots in Mali that have been deemed too dangerous to visit by foreign
embassies because of kidnappings by the local chapter of al-Qaeda.
The incident overnight comes after two French citizens were grabbed
in the middle of the night from their hotel in the Malian town of Hombori
on Thursday.
Neither kidnapping has yet been claimed by al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb,
or AQIM, whose members have kidnapped and ransomed over 50 Europeans and
Canadians since 2003.
If Friday's kidnapping is by AQIM, it will mark the first time they have taken
a hostage inside of Timbuktu's city limits. Thursday's kidnapping would be
another first - the first time they have grabbed their victim south of the Niger River.
The group's footprint has grown dramatically since 2006, when the Algerian-led cell
first joined al-Qaeda. Security experts estimate the group has been able to raise around $US130 million ($134.04 million) from ransom payments alone.

Opposition demands asylum-seeker vote

THE Federal Opposition has challenged the Government to recall
Parliament and attempt to pass amendments to the Migration Act.
The Government failed to get the planned amendments through
Parliament in October after the Opposition refused to support the
legislation.
The amendments, if passed, would allow the Government
to resurrect the Malaysia asylum-seeker people swap deal and restart
offshore processing.
But after Liberal MP Peter Slipper's appointment as Speaker on Thursday,
opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison said the Government now
had the numbers to pass the amendments.
"On Thursday of this week the government had the numbers to pass
its Migration Act amendments through the House of Representatives,"
he told reporters in Sydney today.
"And after it completed its grubby deal for the speakership it could have brought
that matter to a vote ... and secured the passage of that bill.

However, the Greens oppose the Bill, so it could not pass the Senate
without the support of the Opposition.

killing at least eight troops today,
the military said.
"ISAF/NATO helicopters carried out unprovoked and indiscriminate
firing on a Pakistani checkpost in Mohmand agency last night.
Casualties have been reported. However details are coming,"
a military spokesman said.
Security officials in the Mohmand tribal region near the Afghan border and
a military official in Peshawar said eight troops including a major were killed
in the pre-dawn incident.
They said the attack took place on the Sala checkpost in the Baizai district of
the rugged tribal terrain.
"The firing left seven soldiers and one major dead," a local intelligence official said.

TENS of thousands of demonstrators
have packed Cairo's Tahrir Square
after days of deadly clashes,
demanding the military rulers step down
and rejecting their choice of new Prime Minister.
Ahead of elections due to start on Monday despite the political turmoil,
Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) tasked Kamal al-Ganzuri, 78,
a premier under ousted president Hosni Mubarak, to head a new cabinet.
"Previous cabinets over the past 60 years were given many powers by the president
of the republic," Mr Ganzuri told reporters in his first public statement
after his appointment.
He had been granted "much more powers" than past premiers, said Mr Ganzuri,
who served as Mubarak's prime minister between 1996 and 1999.
In a later television address, Mr Ganzuri said he would formalise his government
"before the end of next week" and would allocate some portfolios to younger people.

But protesters in the square quickly rejected his appointment,
saying he was not the man to lead a transition to democracy.
"We do not want someone who has been selected by the military council.
We want a civilian who was with us in Tahrir during the revolution,
someone who has the confidence of the people," said one protester,
Omar Abdel Mansur.
Hundreds of demonstrators in the square branched off to the nearby cabinet offices
to block Ganzuri from entering the building, chanting "revolution" and
"Ganzuri is a former regime leftover".
"The youth of Tahrir had proposed (several) names. None of them were chosen.
We have the feeling nothing has changed" since a popular uprising ousted Mubarak
in February, said Mohammed Khattab, 30.
"Our mistake in the (January-February) revolution was
to think that we had only to topple Mubarak."
The protesters proposed a list of presidential candidates to form a
civilian leadership council, including former UN nuclear watchdog chief
Mohamed ElBaradei, a prominent dissident during Mubarak's rule.
They were bolstered earlier by an announcement that the grand imam of
Al-Azhar, Sunni Islam's highest authority, had thrown his weight behind them.
"The
grand imam (Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb) backs you and is praying for your
victory," senior aide Hassan Shafie told them during a visit to the
square, focus of huge protests
first against Mubarak and now the army.
Sheikh Mazhar Shahin, an imam who led tens of thousands of worshippers in prayer
at the square, said the protesters would stay there until their demands were met.
He called for a national salvation government with presidential powers.
ElBaradei, whose name has been widely touted to be part of a new salvation
government, also joined the protesters in the square on Friday.
But the Tahrir protest was countered by a rival demonstration in a square
about 3km away, where more than 10,000 people gathered to show support
for the military.
"Down with Tahrir" and "Yes to the military council", they chanted.
"I joined the protests against the former regime," said one of the protesters,
Mohammed Abdelhamid. "But the people in Tahrir today don't represent all Egyptians."
The rallies came three days before the first parliamentary elections
since Mubarak's ouster in February, which left the military in charge.
The military announced on Friday that voting would take place over two days,
instead of one, in each of the election's three rounds.
Washington, a close ally of Egypt, called for a quick transfer to civilian rule.
"The United States strongly believes that the new Egyptian government must
be empowered with real authority immediately," White House press secretary
Jay Carney said in a statement.
UN leader Ban Ki-moon renewed calls for the military rulers to ensure
a "peaceful transition"after talks by telephone with Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi,
the head of Egypt's military council.
"The secretary-general remains deeply concerned by the violence in Egypt
over the last few days," Ban's spokesman Martin Nesirky said in New York.
"He deplores the loss of life and the high number of injured.
"He reiterates his call for the transitional authorities to guarantee the
protection of human rights and civil liberties for all Egyptians."
On Tuesday, the SCAF accepted the resignation of the caretaker cabinet
headed by the once-popular Essam Sharaf, whose fall from grace was due
to his perceived weakness in the face of the army.
The violence, in which at least 41 protesters have been killed - 36 of them in Cairo -
and more than 3000 injured since Saturday, was cited as one of the factors that led to
the cabinet's resignation.
The SCAF has said repeatedly that it does not have political ambitions and plans
to hand power to an elected civilian authority after presidential elections set
to take place no later than the end of June 2012.
But it has also insisted it will not bow to pressure from the protesters in
Tahrir, saying they do not represent the whole country.

could not form a government.
Projections with vote counting nearly completed indicated Prime
Minister John Key's centre-right National Party has the numbers to form a
new government with support from minor parties ACT and United Future.
"I rang John Key and I wished him well for the next three years because we
are all New Zealanders and want to see our country do well," he told a gathering
of Labour Party supporters.
"The people have made their decision and we treat their decision
with humility and respect.
Mr Goff took over the leadership of the party after former Labour Prime
Minister Helen Clark was routed by Key at the last election in 2008
after nine years in power.
Ms Clark stood down immediately after the last election but Mr Goff said
that while he had made a decision on his political future he was not prepared
to make it public at this stage.

the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)
from March 2003 to June 2009. ICANN is the chief rule-making body
for internet policy worldwide.
Following a private-sector role as a consultant for McKinsey & Company,
Dr Twomey held executive positions within the Australian Government's

THE last train carrying reprocessed nuclear waste back from France
to Germany crossed the border today after being delayed by
demonstrations and steamed towards more trouble.
The train, carrying 11 wagonloads of vitrified radioactive material,
left a siding in the station of Remilly, just outside the town of Metz
and around 30km from the German border, at 7pm (AEDT).
Several hundred French riot police had protected the train overnight, and
around 60 German officers and a French "RAID" team - a SWAT-style
special weapons squad - were on board as it resumed its journey.
The train had left a yard operated by the French nuclear giant Areva in
Valognes, in Normandy, on Wednesday, due to travel more than 1100km
across France and through Germany to the waste dump in Gorleben.
But violent anti-nuclear protests delayed its journey, and authorities
halted it overnight while trying to keep demonstrators guessing about
its eventual route across the border and back into Germany.

Last November a similar controversial shipment took 91 hours to arrive at
its final destination - a day longer than planned - and it was dogged
the length of the route by French and then German protesters.
Around 50,000 activists turned out in Germany to try to disrupt the train
during that transfer, and protest organisers expect 20,000 to demonstrate
against the convoy as it nears the central town of Gorlebenlater on Friday.
Some 19,000 German officers have been deployed, and tear gas and water canon

Spooked by Japan's Fukushima disaster, Germany has decided to phase out its

of sending radioactive waste overland to France for reprocessing.

French industry is reliant on cheap nuclear-generated electricity.
There has long been widespread public opposition in Germany to nuclear power,
which environmentalists believe presents an unacceptable radioactive threat
to public health and the environment.
In March, the Japanese nuclear plant at Fukushima Daiichi was hit by an earthquake
and a tsunami, triggering a meltdown and massive radiation leak - and increasing
worldwide concerns over nuclear power.
Chancellor Angela Merkel's government agreed to halt German reactors by 2022,
forcing energy suppliers to close plants and levying a tax on fuel.
In the meantime, Germany will no longer send nuclear waste for
reprocessing in France, but will instead stockpile it until a way is
found to make it safe.
France produces 75 per cent of its electricity needs in nuclear plants - a
higher proportion than any other country - and its electricity bills are around
25 per cent cheaper than in its neighbours, a boon to industry.
German protesters are angry that Merkel's announced nuclear phase-out will
take another decade, and that there is still no permanent storage site for the waste generated in the country's reactors.

NATO helicopters from Afghanistan
carried out an "unprovoked" attack
on a Pakistani border post,
killing at least eight troops today,
the military said.
"ISAF/NATO helicopters carried out unprovoked and indiscriminate
firing on a Pakistani checkpost in Mohmand agency last night.
Casualties have been reported. However details are coming,"
a military spokesman said.
Security officials in the Mohmand tribal region near the Afghan border and
a military official in Peshawar said eight troops including a major were killed
in the pre-dawn incident.
They said the attack took place on the Sala checkpost in the Baizai district of
the rugged tribal terrain.
"The firing left seven soldiers and one major dead," a local intelligence official said.

In Kabul a spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force
(ISAF) told AFP: "We are aware that an incident did take place. We are
still in the process of gathering information".
Washington considers the tribal belt a hotbed of Al-Qaeda, where Taliban and
other militants plot attacks on American troops -- including those in the US-led
international force based in Afghanistan.

Egypt protesters reject new PM

TENS of thousands of demonstrators
have packed Cairo's Tahrir Square
after days of deadly clashes,
demanding the military rulers step down
and rejecting their choice of new Prime Minister.
Ahead of elections due to start on Monday despite the political turmoil,
Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) tasked Kamal al-Ganzuri, 78,
a premier under ousted president Hosni Mubarak, to head a new cabinet.
"Previous cabinets over the past 60 years were given many powers by the president
of the republic," Mr Ganzuri told reporters in his first public statement
after his appointment.
He had been granted "much more powers" than past premiers, said Mr Ganzuri,
who served as Mubarak's prime minister between 1996 and 1999.
In a later television address, Mr Ganzuri said he would formalise his government
"before the end of next week" and would allocate some portfolios to younger people.

But protesters in the square quickly rejected his appointment,
saying he was not the man to lead a transition to democracy.
"We do not want someone who has been selected by the military council.
We want a civilian who was with us in Tahrir during the revolution,
someone who has the confidence of the people," said one protester,
Omar Abdel Mansur.
Hundreds of demonstrators in the square branched off to the nearby cabinet offices
to block Ganzuri from entering the building, chanting "revolution" and
"Ganzuri is a former regime leftover".
"The youth of Tahrir had proposed (several) names. None of them were chosen.
We have the feeling nothing has changed" since a popular uprising ousted Mubarak
in February, said Mohammed Khattab, 30.
"Our mistake in the (January-February) revolution was
to think that we had only to topple Mubarak."
The protesters proposed a list of presidential candidates to form a
civilian leadership council, including former UN nuclear watchdog chief
Mohamed ElBaradei, a prominent dissident during Mubarak's rule.
They were bolstered earlier by an announcement that the grand imam of
Al-Azhar, Sunni Islam's highest authority, had thrown his weight behind them.
"The
grand imam (Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb) backs you and is praying for your
victory," senior aide Hassan Shafie told them during a visit to the
square, focus of huge protests
first against Mubarak and now the army.
Sheikh Mazhar Shahin, an imam who led tens of thousands of worshippers in prayer
at the square, said the protesters would stay there until their demands were met.
He called for a national salvation government with presidential powers.
ElBaradei, whose name has been widely touted to be part of a new salvation
government, also joined the protesters in the square on Friday.
But the Tahrir protest was countered by a rival demonstration in a square
about 3km away, where more than 10,000 people gathered to show support
for the military.
"Down with Tahrir" and "Yes to the military council", they chanted.
"I joined the protests against the former regime," said one of the protesters,
Mohammed Abdelhamid. "But the people in Tahrir today don't represent all Egyptians."
The rallies came three days before the first parliamentary elections
since Mubarak's ouster in February, which left the military in charge.
The military announced on Friday that voting would take place over two days,
instead of one, in each of the election's three rounds.
Washington, a close ally of Egypt, called for a quick transfer to civilian rule.
"The United States strongly believes that the new Egyptian government must
be empowered with real authority immediately," White House press secretary
Jay Carney said in a statement.
UN leader Ban Ki-moon renewed calls for the military rulers to ensure
a "peaceful transition"after talks by telephone with Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi,
the head of Egypt's military council.
"The secretary-general remains deeply concerned by the violence in Egypt
over the last few days," Ban's spokesman Martin Nesirky said in New York.
"He deplores the loss of life and the high number of injured.
"He reiterates his call for the transitional authorities to guarantee the
protection of human rights and civil liberties for all Egyptians."
On Tuesday, the SCAF accepted the resignation of the caretaker cabinet
headed by the once-popular Essam Sharaf, whose fall from grace was due
to his perceived weakness in the face of the army.
The violence, in which at least 41 protesters have been killed - 36 of them in Cairo -
and more than 3000 injured since Saturday, was cited as one of the factors that led to
the cabinet's resignation.
The SCAF has said repeatedly that it does not have political ambitions and plans
to hand power to an elected civilian authority after presidential elections set
to take place no later than the end of June 2012.
But it has also insisted it will not bow to pressure from the protesters in
Tahrir, saying they do not represent the whole country.

Opposition concedes defeat in NZ election

OPPOSITION leader Phil Goff conceded defeat
in the New Zealand election Saturday
admitting his centre-left Labour Party
could not form a government.
Projections with vote counting nearly completed indicated Prime
Minister John Key's centre-right National Party has the numbers to form a
new government with support from minor parties ACT and United Future.
"I rang John Key and I wished him well for the next three years because we
are all New Zealanders and want to see our country do well," he told a gathering
of Labour Party supporters.
"The people have made their decision and we treat their decision
with humility and respect.
Mr Goff took over the leadership of the party after former Labour Prime
Minister Helen Clark was routed by Key at the last election in 2008
after nine years in power.
Ms Clark stood down immediately after the last election but Mr Goff said
that while he had made a decision on his political future he was not prepared
to make it public at this stage.

Paul Twomey 2007
Paul Twomey was the Chief Executive Officer and President of
the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)
from March 2003 to June 2009. ICANN is the chief rule-making body
for internet policy worldwide.
Following a private-sector role as a consultant for McKinsey & Company,
Dr Twomey held executive positions within the Australian Government's
foreign trade organisation Austrade. His role there included working on
strategic development and European markets.
He was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the
National Office for the Information Economy (NOIE) in 1997,
a Commonwealth Government unit responsible for developing Internet policy.
His involvement with ICANN began at this time.
Subsequently he chaired the ICANN Government Advisory Committee,[1]
which served as the organisation's liaison with world governments.
Following his departure from NOIE, Dr Twomey created a consultancy
with Ira Magaziner
(Domestic Policy Adviser to former US President Bill Clinton)
called Argo P@cific.[2]
He continued to serve on the ICANN GAC until November 2002,
through an ongoing posting as external advisor to
Australia's Commonwealth Government.
Dr Twomey is a member of the British-North American Committee.
He also serves on the board of directors of the
Atlantic Council of the United States
and chairs the World Economic Forum's
Global Agenda Council on the Future of the Internet.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Queensland,
a Master of Arts from Pennsylvania State University
and a PhD from Cambridge University.
On 27 March 2003 he was elected to his current position at ICANN.
On 2 March 2009, during the opening ceremony of
ICANN's 34th international meeting in Mexico City,
Dr Twomey mentioned that he would be leaving ICANN in June
while remaining as Senior President until the end of the year.[3]
His name has recently been mentioned in relation to
the Commonwealth Government's proposed National Broadband Network.
