Alma Dogs is a community club formed in 1995
by the owners of dogs in the City of Port Phillip;

and largely centred on Alma Park.

What we're about is protecting the rights of dogs and their owners
in the municipality;
and helping to maintain the traditional mutually beneficial relationship
that has existed between humans and dogs since the dawn of history.

We emphasize the importance of responsible dog ownership
among our members and encourage the proper training and socialising of
our canine companions through free access to public outdoor spaces.

Alma Dogs has successfully lobbied our local Council for
off-leash recreation areas for dogs. This includes an extended
off lead beach area, for dogs to be allowed on all beaches during winter,
the upgrading of public parks, including (in Alma Park) the provision of
pooper-scooper stations, the Doggerwel drinking and wallowing facility
and the installation of a public notice board. We are recognized by Council
as a popular voice which cannot be ignored.

We are rapidly gaining members in Stonnington, Boroondara and other
surrounding areas
where we shall campaign for recognition by these Councils
on the benefits of responsible dog ownership and the importance of
socialisation. We are also working on reduction of cruelty to dogs by liaising with Councils to rectify any situations reported to us.

Alma Dogs Aims

  • registration of all dogs
  • owners supporting and conducting obedience training by positive reinforcement
  • all dogs being effectively controlled
  • forming liaisons with other Melbourne dog groups
  • being a voice in the community
  • encouraging positive attitudes and striving to end negativity in the community
  • encouraging club members to participate in increasing membership

Big Red aka PHAR LAP...

"a dog miaows" and "the laughing bear rides a motorcycle". - Page 2 Pharlap01
The Phar Lap story begins in 1928,
when trainer Harry Telford
buys a yearling chestnut thoroughbred at auction.
Flat broke, he borrows the 160-guinea sale price.
The horse is a massive 17 hands.
Other trainers laugh -
the gelding eats too much and, after four races,
has yet to win a place.
But Telford persists,
and with the help of a young strapper called
Tommy Woodcock, Phar Lap wins his first race.

Strapper
Tommy Woodcock
adores Phar Lap.
He sleeps most nights
in the stables
with the horse.
Under his special care and training,
Phar Lap wins and
wins.

With record unemployment
and chronic food shortages, Depression
Australia desperately needs a new hero.
70,000 people come to see Phar Lap
run in the Melbourne Cup in 1930.

Those who can't afford the ticket price
watch from across the river on Scotchman's Hill.

There was movement at the station, for the word had passed around
That the colt from old Regret had got away
,

And had joined the wild bush horses - he was worth a thousand pound,
So all the cracks had gathered to the fray.
All the tried and noted riders from the stations near and far
Had mustered at the homestead overnight,

For the bushmen love hard riding where the wild bush horses are,
And the stockhorse snuffs the battle with delight.

Penny's father had made a deal with leading owner Ogden Phipps
that if he would breed his best stallion (Bold Ruler)
with Penny's two best mares (Somethingroyal and Hasty Matilda)
that when the mares were close to term they would flip a coin
to see who got which foal.
Bold Ruler, the stallion was fast but couldn't last over distances.
Hasty Matilda was the obvious choice due to her young age,
but Somethingroyal's bloodline was made up of many horses
with good stamina.
Penny hopes to win and choose Somethingroyal's foal due to the
interesting mix of speed and stamina.
Phipps picks Hasty Matilda and
Penny wins Somethingroyal's foal, Secretariat.

SOMEONE tell Evan van der Spuy that African wildebeest don't always use the zebra crossing.
Actually, don't - he's already learnt the hard way.
And if he hasn't, he will after every second person on the planet tunes into
YouTube today to watch him get taken out by a red hartebeest while
riding in a race near Albert Falls in KwaZulu, South Africa.
"Watch the buck!", his teammate calls, just in time for van der Spuy to throw an arm out.
Needless to say, to no avail - this red hartebeest weighs about 150kg and was fairly clipping along.

TREASURER Wayne Swan has

indicated a preparedness to discuss
how Australia can assist
the ailing European economy.

Speaking in Paris ahead of the G20 Finance Ministers Meeting, Mr
Swan was bailed up by foreign media in his hotel lobby on Friday, the
same day he was due to meet with IMF managing director Christine
Lagarde.

"I think a number of finance ministers have indicated a
willingness to discuss, as part of the agenda here (in Paris), ways that
resources can be made available to the IMF to further assist European
countries respond to the issues," Mr Swan told reporters.

Remaining silent about his bilateral talks on Friday which included meetings with
Ms Lagarde, French Finance Minister Francois Baroin and Indian Finance
Minister Pranab Muhkerjee, Mr Swan said he had seen evidence of improvement in
Europe's economy.

"The first priority here is for the Europeans to put their house in

he said with regard to the eurozone sovereign debt crisis.

"I was encouraged when we were in Washington a couple of weeks ago that
they had heard that message loud and clear from fellow G20 finance

on the European banking system."

The Deputy Prime Minister added that he was confident "a comprehensive response"
to the crisis would be announced by the European Council and eurozone summit on
October 23.

Reserve Bank Governor Glenn Stevens is also in Paris for Saturday's G20 meeting.

Melbourne homes the nation's richest

by:John Masanauskas
From:Herald Sun

MELBOURNE households are the richest in Australia, says a new report.

Households in the state's capital had an average net worth of $866,000 last year,
ahead of Perth ($853,000), Canberra ($843,000) and well in front of Sydney ($766,745),
an ABS report released yesterday said.

The average wealth of all Australian households was $720,000,
up 14 per cent
compared with 2005-06 when adjusted for inflation.

Estimates were derived from the value of assets, including the home, minus liabilities
such as mortgages.

For households that owned their home outright,
the average value of the home was $541,000.

The
report revealed

the richest 20 per cent of
Australian households
had increased their worth by 15 per cent
over the past five years
to an average of $2.2 million in 2009-10.

The poorest 20 per cent had only a 4 per cent rise to an average $32,000 a household.
For households with superannuation, the average value was $154,000, but half of those homes had super assets under $60,000.
Superannuation was the main financial asset, with 75 per cent of all homes having some super assets.
One in five households has property other than their own home, including holiday homes and rental properties.

Victoria's new deep-water port at Hastings
has been described as the state's biggest infrastructure project in a century.

HWT Image Library

A NEW 30km road or rail link through Melbourne's southeastern
suburbs is the key to the Baillieu Government's multi-billion-dollar
development of a new deep-water port at Hastings.

Releasing key details of the project for the first time, Ports Minister Denis Napthine
described it as the biggest infrastructure project in Victoria in a century.

The development will see the Port of Melbourne replaced as the state's main port
and the engine room of the Victorian economy.

A dedicated road or rail link, running parallel to the existing Western Port Highway,
would potentially link the port to a new distribution centre, or "inland port", near Dandenong.

Giant driver-less trucks, similar to those used in mines, are one of the options under
consideration to move millions of containers and other freight from Hastings to the
new inland port for distribution across the city and state.

A soon-to-be-appointed Port of Hastings Authority will be ordered
to evaluate building the first Australian electric truck link between
the port and the land likely to be set aside between Dandenong and
Lyndhurst for the freight hub.

Remote-controlled trucks driven by computer and powered by electricity are being
considered
for the route, as the Government takes a state-of-the-art approach to
an election commitment it believes will be the centrepiece of Victoria's
economic future.

In a major shake-up of the state's jobs and
industrial base, the Government next year will appeal to the Gillard
Government for urgent funding to fast-track the development.

Dr Napthine said the port and its transport links - to be up and running within 10 years
to 15 years - would define the Baillieu Government and shape the state's future for the next 100 years.

"In terms of significance to the growth and development of Victoria,
this will be the biggest project since CityLink, and I think it will even be bigger
than CityLink in terms of the opportunities it creates for Victoria," he said.

"It's
one of the biggest projects in the state's history. It is a project
that is about the next 100 years of Victoria, and it's absolutely vital
to our state."

But critics say it is likely to lead to
widespread commuter chaos on the state's rail and road networks, with
industry experts predicting traffic gridlock, unless costly major
changes are
introduced.

In an exclusive briefing to the Sunday Herald Sun, Dr Napthine confirmed:
PRIVATE property owners will have their land compulsorily acquired to make way
for the port. But it has not yet been decided where and when.
THE Government will consider dropping tolls on EastLink at off-peak times in a bid to get freight moving outside peak periods.
THE port's main operations centre could be built off-site, with workers operating infrastructure remotely.
HIGH costs, transport links and environmental impacts will present major
challenges to the Government in the port's construction.
POSITIONS on the Port of Hastings Authority board have been advertised and will
be filled this year to start work on January 1, with their first job a cost-benefit analysis.
NO DETAILED costings or mapping have been conducted since the former
Labor government released reports on the port last year and in 2006.

Treasury last year estimated the cost of constructing the port in the decade at
$9.4 billion and the State Opposition said it would put 6000 more trucks
a day on our roads and 16 new trains on rail lines. Dr Napthine (above)
dismissed both estimations, but could not provide alternate figures.

He said privatising the port "was not part of the plan", but did not rule it out.

The Government has dismissed two transport options, advised by the former government -
a rail link to Gippsland and use of the Frankston-Stony Point rail line -
and settled on the Western Port Highway as the preferred corridor for goods transport.

Dr Napthine said a decision had not yet been made about exactly how and where containers
would move to and from the port, but said it would definitely flank Western Port Highway.

"There are potentially options to have a dedicated truck route that
runs parallel to the Western Port Highway, but doesn't have any
disruption of the Western Port Highway," he said.

"Or it may be that there is a dedicated rail shuttle that would use that same corridor
to and from the inland port that you then distribute goods from there in var- ious ways."

The "inland port" - a hub for trucks and rail - is likely to be built about 30km north of the
port, between Dandenong and Lyndhurst.

Dr Napthine predicted minimal development on the coastal area and more construction on
quarantine, storage, customs and logistics facilities in the city's southeast.

Plans for the port, which will handle more than two million shipping
containers a year, have sparked fears of traffic mayhem, as road and
rail networks are deemed too weak to handle the extra pressure.

A port authority study released this year shows most containers would
need to be delivered to Melbourne's west, meaning a widespread overhaul
of rail and road passages across the city is needed to avoid traffic chaos.

The Victorian Transport Association called for bigger limits on truck sizes so more containers can be moved per vehicle.

VTA
deputy chief executive Neil Chambers said the M1 should be part of a
large-scale upgrade or the city's major arteries could clog with the
added traffic.

The Port of Melbourne's container logistic chain
study, conducted by the Port of Melbourne under the former Brumby
government, shows western and northern areas, such as Laverton North,
Somerton, Altona and Tullamarine, rank among the most common places
where containers are delivered.

"Containers will be ... stevedored at Hastings, but will need to travel to Altona and Campbellfield," he said.

VICTORIA'S Jewish community wants a radical Islamic group banned, claiming it poses a security risk.

Hizb ut-Tahrir, which is banned in several countries, is due to hold a conference
against the Afghanistan war in Melbourne tonight.

The group's Australian branch has also recently criticised a new counter-terrorism website launched by the Federal Government.

Victorian Jewish Community Council president John Searle said yesterday that
Hizb ut-Tahrir's beliefs were contrary to those of most Australians.

"They peddle a very virulent form of anti-semitism and anti-Zionism, and they
are the sort of group that would encourage home-grown terrorists," he said.

"We are not happy that they are here at all. We don't believe they are a desirable influence on young minds."

Mr Searle said the Jewish community council wanted the group banned
and was concerned that speakers at tonight's event could inspire people
to take extreme actions.

"They are certainly at the very extreme end and extremists do not produce any good results for anybody," he said.

But Hizb ut-Tahrir spokesman Uthman Badar denied the group was extremist or anti-Semitic.

"The claims made about us are based on hearsay," he said.
"We are happy for them (Jewish community members) to come down
and have a look at our conference."

Mr Badar said the group had a problem with Israel because of the occupation of Palestine.

Federal
Attorney-General Robert McClelland said Hizb ut-Tahrir's views were
well out of step with the Australian community and the question of
banning the group was constantly being reviewed by security and
intelligence agencies.

"The Government takes a hard line against groups that advocate terrorism,
and will act upon advice from its security agencies as to whether they should be proscribed," he said.
Tonight's conference - Afghanistan, Ten Years of Injustice, Oppression and Failure - will take place in a city hotel.

The bear took Lance Richardson's lifejacket.
Photo: Lance Richardson

Lance Richardson encounters huge halibut and hungry bears on Kodiak Island, on the frontier of Alaska.

Like much of Alaska, it looks uninhabited, a lonely
outpost off the Katmai Coast. Thick forests of spruce climb to snowy
peaks. There are dozens of shingle beaches, water crashing on shores
framed by high cliffs and the white branches of skeletal driftwood.
Though Hawaii's "Big Island" claims the title of America's largest,
Kodiak Island, coming in second, feels particularly vast and untamed.

In 9293 square kilometres there are fewer than 12,000
people, clustered in seven remote communities. All but one of these
require a boat or float plane for access. The rest of the island is a
vast blind spot of wilderness, unoccupied except for several thousand of
one of the world's largest bears.

I am sitting on the deck of the Alaska Marine Highway
Ferry, having taken the overnight passage from Homer, on the Alaskan
coast. As people lean over railings, searching for signs of life on the
island through binoculars, I prepare myself by scrolling through the
saved web pages of "Be Bear Aware," a useful digest of survival
strategies.

"If contact is made," it explains, "drop to the ground
and play dead. Lie on your stomach, clasp your hands behind your neck,
and use your elbows and toes to avoid being rolled over. If the bear
does roll you over, keep rolling until you land back on your stomach.
Remain still and try not to struggle or scream."

Despite the horrifying subtext of these instructions, I
find it difficult to be alarmed by the prospect of a bear encounter
here. Years of Pavlovian conditioning mean, as with many children, I was
taught to associate the figure of the bear with security and comfort.

In 1902, the US President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt went
hunting in Mississippi. Wanting to ensure their leader was successful,
Roosevelt's aides used hounds to track a black bear, which they then
clubbed and tied to a tree. Roosevelt, to his credit, would have no part
of it. Though expected to shoot the bear, he waved away the act as
"unsportsmanlike" - a pardon that electrified the nation, particularly
because of a political cartoon that depicted the bear as tiny and
doe-eyed. A toy-maker saw this cartoon and crafted "Teddy's bear" in
response; the rest is history.

Less well known is that Roosevelt, with his fateful wave,
essentially destroyed human-bear relations forever. Instead of wise
caution when facing a wild animal, many people now see the bear as a
cuddly forest friend. As the ferry docks in Kodiak Town my head is
filled, against all better judgment, with images of a giant teddy bear
turning me over and over like a tootsie roll.

Partly established to combat such woeful
misunderstanding, a visitors' centre by the dock explains the reasoning
behind the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge. In a marked difference from
national parks, which are intended for the enjoyment and education of
the public, a wildlife refuge seeks to maintain the habitat of an
animal; visitors are a secondary concern.

This means, for example, no comprehensive road network
with lookouts and interpretative rangers. While Kodiak Town offers a
modest scribble of highways on the island's eastern side, they terminate
before approaching the refuge in the west.

Established in 1941, the refuge protects bears and salmon
in a reserve that covers more than two-thirds of the island. Male
kodiak bears can grow to three metres and 600 kilograms. So profuse is
their supply of protein-rich salmon that in Kodiak's Karluk Bay the
density is 220 bears per 2.6 square kilometres. A walk around the
visitor's centre makes the situation very clear: there may be a stuffed
bear in the town bank comically dressed as Santa every Christmas, but on
this island bears are no laughing matter. There are a great many of
them, they are extremely big and approaching one in the wild is a
high-risk activity.

So, of course, I head into the wild to see the bears.
Under most circumstances this would be an act of outrageous stupidity,
but I'm joining Steele Davis on a Spirit of Alaska Wilderness Adventure.
In other words: I'm placing my life in the hands of a man who carries a
.44 Magnum handgun when kayaking.

After a short tour of Kodiak Town - the island's largest
settlement, though little more than a fishing village - I board a mail
cargo plane and fly to meet him in Larsen Bay. From that bay we float
down Uyak Bay, a dramatic fiord that almost bisects Kodiak completely.
Davis lives partway along the coast in a dilapidated cannery abandoned
since 1983. He also owns cabins on nearby Amook Island, built next to
the remnants of an ancient indigenous village. These facts he throws out
casually: there is an otter; there is a deer; there is my ancient
indigenous village. For Davis there is nothing unusual about having a
market on your property still stocked with olives and jockey shorts from
the late 1970s.

"Is my coffee table made from an anti-tank missile case?" I ask.

"I found it out back," Davis says.

Remarkably, Davis has turned this surreal tableau into an
exhilarating guest experience involving hiking, kayaking, wildlife
viewing and world-class fishing. After dinner I wander through old
factories on the edge of the forest. In the midnight sun bald eagles
skirt the bay. Davis has taken a unique corner of the Alaskan wilderness
and made it accessible; the result is a strange melange of relaxation
and hallucination.

I haven't fished for 10 years: on my first attempt,
casting a test line, I hook a halibut so big (28 kilograms) it snaps the
gaff in half as Davis attempts to secure it to the side of his boat.
After this, I'm intoxicated. Kodiak is the sort of place where the
impossible is not just possible, but highly likely.

Though one could fish indefinitely if desired, Davis is
up for anything you could imagine. At my first mention of tracking bears
we're loaded into kayaks and floating down the fiord. I have been
researching for days, reading every warning pamphlet and guide to
interacting with the local fauna but, in the heat of pursuit, all advice
drains away and everything comes to rest on my expert leader.

"Everyone scoffs at it, but I carry armour-piercing
bullets," Davis says. "I ain't never shot one and I don't plan on it,
but they have a hard head."

After pulling up on a shingle beach we enter the forest
along a well-trod path which, I quickly realise, is not well-trod
because of human traffic. Thick vegetation impedes our feet. Davis leads
the way, crushing branches, crouching occasionally to scan the grassy
fields down the bank with his binoculars.

Though there is a bear in the distance, it appears to be
resting, a small brown face in a sea of green. We wait for some sign of
activity but after a while it becomes clear the bear is content to
remain where it is. Rain has started to fall and Davis calls off the
search, directing me back to the kayaks. After that - perhaps while I'm
lost in thought, revising fantasies of heroic close encounters -
everything goes slightly awry: a bear is sitting at the kayaks,
lifejacket in its jaws.

Davis directs me to halt immediately. The bear looks up,
surprised by strange new intruders, then stands and stares us down as he
continues to devour the very things that are supposed to protect us
against the harsh environment.

In retrospect I wonder: would I have dropped to the
ground and played dead if it decided to charge? Would I have had the
strength of mind to clasp my hands behind my neck, digging elbows into
the dirt to stop the bear from rolling me over? Could I have remained
silent or would I have screamed? Davis starts a slow waltz, talking down
the bear with friendly words and gentle discouragement. Though
beautiful, the bear is terrifyingly large. My heart is pumping
furiously. And all I know is that, contrary to my musings on the ferry,
there is nothing teddy bear-ish about the teeth marks or the creature
that made them, now retreating slowly into the shadows of the Kodiak
forest.

AUSTRALIAN STORY:

Watch Full programme:

10/10/2011

Introduced by Lloyd Phillips, Hollywood producer of movies such as
'The Tourist' and 'Inglourious Basterds'

This week's program tells the story of the Australian woman at the heart
of Steven Spielberg's much anticipated Christmas blockbuster.

Zelie Bullen is a former stunt woman, turned world renowned animal trainer.

She is stepping into the international spotlight as the woman who
trained 'Abraham', the lead horse in Spielberg's production of the Tony
award winning play 'War Horse'.

The movie is being likened to 'ET' and tells the story of a boy who
follows his beloved horse into the trenches in World War One.

Zelie Bullen married into the famous Bullen circus family. Her own early
history with its triumphs and tragedies, reads like a film script.

But it's the once in a lifetime performance she drew from
the horse 'Abraham' that seems set to make Hollywood history...

Bullen says "At the end of the job Steven (Spielberg) threw up his arms
for a big hug and said 'all of the love that you put into your animals
has come out on screen, on my screen and it will be there forever'."

Now Bullen is on a reunion quest of her own. She says she is desperate
to acquire 'Abraham' and bring him back to her property on the Gold
Coast hinterland...

Dog owners could be jailed for attacks
From:AAP
October 16, 2011
11:51AM

OWNERS of dangerous dogs that maim or kill could face up to 10 years
jail under a draft amendment to the Queensland Criminal Code.

The Queensland Government has released the draft amendment to deal specifically with serious injury or death caused by dogs.

Attorney General Paul Lucas said the recent death of Ayen Choi in Victoria had sparked debate about Queensland's dangerous dog laws.

He said the proposed amendment to introduce a Dangerous Management of a Dog offence to the Criminal Code would make it clear that owners of dangerous dogs who attack or kill could be criminally liable.

"This is about making sure that the message to dog owners is loud and clear," Mr Lucas said.

"If they are not properly controlling their pet and it maims or kills a child or an adult,
then they could be criminally liable for their action.

"While I have been advised that current provisions in the
Queensland Criminal Code such as manslaughter could cover this type of
situation,
a specific provision would remove any doubt at all."

Mr Lucas said the draft amendment is similar to the specific provision for
dangerous driving, which was introduced so courts did not need to rely
on manslaughter.

He said the draft amendment provided for a person to be criminally liable
when reasonable steps are not taken to ensure the dog is safely managed

The vast majority of dog owners were responsible and the amendment was
not intended to cover situations where owners have taken all steps to ensure
a dog was secure and safely managed, Mr Lucas said.

Key stakeholders such as Local Governments, the RSPCA, breeders and others
would be consulted on the proposed changes before the Government decided if
they would be introduced to Parliament.
_____________________________________________________

And it's 'those' "Key Stakeholders" who made it impossible for truly ethical breeders,
to breed a sound and SAFE line of dogs.

The first line of attack was that 'they' branded, "backyard breeders", i.e. people who's
dogs were bred and RAISED in FAMILY HOMES where temperaments
appropriate for families and general public social situations, could seen and selected for, as "the problem"?!

But this is a massive topic, that goes well beyond what the news has to say about,
and a topic I am genuinely expert in, not only as a breeder but at a, 'how politics is done, behind closed doors', level. So I won't bother all 'you' CONspiracy Industry Pushers, with such facts, knowing how much, actually enlightening and edifying facts, from honest, real people, offend 'you'.

New Zealand full-back Israel Dagg's explanation today
of his unusual try-scoring celebration against France
proved mystifying to both teammate Daniel Carter
and assembled media in Wellington.

During the match, Dagg marked one of his two tries
in a 37-17 All Blacks victory by bending his arm
to form a shape some described as resembling the French rooster.

He refused to discuss his celebration when quizzed by
journalists,
other than offering two crypic clues --
"a dog miaows"
and

"the laughing bear rides a motorcycle".

Carter, sitting alongside, could offer no insight, telling reporters:
"It makes no sense to me."

There were suggestions Dagg's unfathomable clues may have
been inspired
by French footballer Eric Cantona's famously obtuse
quote:
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think
sardines will be thrown into the sea."

Carter said the lack of familiarity with the match ball might be behind
the Rugby World Cup kicking woes of the world's best marksmen..

Wayward goalkicking has been a talking point of the tournament so far,
with the manufacturers of the Gilbert ball denying it's their problem,
saying each ball has been checked and approved by an engineer.

But Carter said it had different characteristics to what he was used to
from the Super Rugby season earlier in the year.

"It doesn't have as much give so, if you don't quite strike it right,
it then doesn't fly as straight as you would like at times," the All Blacks pivot said.

"But it is the same for every kicker ... if you strike it well - then it goes straight."

Carter, who had a 75 per cent success rate in the recent Tri Nations series,
described his slump to a 67 per cent average in the World Cup as frustrating.

"Obviously, when you play with a certain ball, you get used to it and to
have a new one for such an important tournament can be frustrating early on.

"But it's just a matter of getting out and working hard on the practice pitch."

Though this life-sized, standard bovine statue is not as huge
as other civic cows, the citizens of Harvard, Illinois, near the
Wisconsin border, harbor strong feelings about their mascot. Harmilda
the Cow has been the symbol of Harvard's annual Milk Day (Har-Mil-Da,
get it?) since 1966.

In 1991, a plan to uproot the fiberglass statue from the busy downtown
intersection sparked a protest by townspeople and children carrying
signs that read "Don't Mooove Harmilda." She stayed put, at least for a
few years. She's been moved a few feet, and sits at the "y" intersection
of two downtown streets.

A mural of cows in a farm pasture serves as a pastoral background, but
don't be lulled. A few errant steps backward from the statue and you
might meet one of the locals up close, perhaps through a windshield.

The plaque underneath Harmilda still touts Harvard's civic claim,
"The Milk Center of the World."

Milk Days is the longest running annual festival (now a multi-day event)
in Illinois, according to the Milk Days web site. The town crowns a
fresh Milk Day Queen every year.

Cowlossus of Roads

On the roads of America, cows rule. Of all the animals that graze at the edges
of the collective driving unconscious, our rural milk-machines enjoy the most
frequent cement and fiberglass tributes. While many big bovines are identical,
cast from standard molds by F.A.S.T. and
like fiberfolks, each is important to its host community, local dairy, or cheese
boutique. The best place to start our cow round-up is Cheese-proud Wisconsin.
If you're lactose intolerant, turn back now...

Chatty Belle, Neillsville, WI.

In Neillsville, (clark County seat, fourth in the state in milk production),
stands Chatty Belle, the world's largest talking cow. Visitors can press
the button mounted on Chatty's base and Chatty will tell them many things --
like that a cow her size would produce over 270 pounds of milk a day. Or that
your best food value lies in one hundred percent natural Wisconsin Dairy cheeses.

A herd of prime bovines can be found around the Madison, WI, area. DeForest
once claimed the World's Largest Cow -- Sissy the Cow the mascot
of Ehlenbach's Cheese Chalet,. It's the same size as Chatty Belle (but is
not currently talking). It's 19 feet tall, 20 feet long, and two tons -- a
holstein cow made of structural steel and fiber mixed with epoxy. But it's
not the largest.

Janesville is home to Bessie the Cow, formerly of the
Oasis Restaurant, Motel
and Cheese Shop, refurbished after that established was torn down and
replaced with something new. Further east in Wisconsin, Manitowoc is
home to a big cow at Cedar Crest Ice Cream, named "Betsy."

In Harvard, Illinois, near the Wisconsin border, Harmilda the Cow
is the symbol of the annual Harvard Milk Day Festival (Har-Mil-Da, get
it?). She's been a fiberglass fixture in Harvard since 1966. An
ill-conceived plan to move Harmilda from the downtown
intersection sparked a protest by townspeople and children carrying
signs that read "Don't Mooove
Harmilda." She stayed put. The plaque underneath Harmilda carries
Harvard's civic claim, "The Milk Center of the World."

South to Stephenville, TX, to marvel
at "Moola," a Holstein Cow Statue on a Pole,
paying tribute to Erath County's dairy industry.
She's just bigger than life-size, on a platform mounted
on a pole at one corner of the town square.

Joining the herd, Ashburn, GA.

For decades, Kadie the Cow guarded the Kinnett Dairies from her hill overlooking a shopping mall in Columbus, GA.
She's about 20 feet tall. The dairy was torn down in the early 2000s,
replaced by a Best Buy, but Kadie remains, albeit sometimes crowded by
Geek Squad cars.

The most gargantuan cow is undoubtedly Salem Sue, in New Salem, ND.
She stands 38 feet tall on School Hill, the only hill in sight,
overlooking I-94. Sue stares intently over the flat fields that stretch
to the horizon, her reinforced fiberglass skin taut and shiny.

While most giants are clustered in the Heartland, cow appreciation can be found
from coast to coast. New cow statues pop up regularly.

In Carnation, Washington, the Champion Milk Cow statue next to Carnation Dairy headquarters salutes the "Foster Mother of the Human Race," producer of
a record 16,500 quarts of milk in the 1920s.
Woodstock, Ontario weighs in with the Springbank Snow Countess Memorial,
a statue of the World's Leading Butterfat-Producing Cow.
She churned out 9,062 pounds of butterfat and 207,000 pounds of milk
before her death in 1936.

And milk fans can still visit the Grave of Elsie the Cow,

Borden's milk mascot, in Plainsboro, NJ.

Delavan, Wisconsin

In the 1800s more than 25 circuses used Delavan as their
winter quarters. It was called the "Circus Capital of the World." The
town has chosen to commemorate its heritage oddly, with a life-size
statue of its most infamous resident: Romeo, the killer elephant.

Romeo was no misunderstood, one-shot killer. He was a serial murderer,
knocking off five people over a period of 15 years. He crushed one, he
impaled another with his tusk, he stamped a third to death. Romeo once
escaped from his barn and terrorized the countryside for three days. On
another occasion, while appearing in Chicago, he nearly tore the
theater apart.

We've visited the graves of many circus elephants
who were shot, or hanged, or electrocuted after one minor killing. Why
was Romeo allowed to live? Perhaps he was spared because of a story,
popular at the time, that he was merely acting out his grief after the
death of his favorite female companion elephant, Juliet. This sounds
reasonable, kind of, except that it was a made-up story from a circus
press agent. Romeo was apparently just mean.

To Delavan's credit, the Romeo statue
(a fiberglass sculpture made by F.A.S.T.)
is not depicted as cuddly and cute. He rears menacingly on his hind
legs, eyes glazed, with a strap around his head that probably put him in
a bad mood. Inexplicably, a happy clown waves at Romeo's feet,
oblivious to the killer pachyderm that is about to fall on him.

If this is an accurate representation of 19th century circus life, then
perhaps Romeo wasn't a cold-blooded killer after all. Maybe the people
around him were just dumb.
