Breaking news
Prince William flies through helicopter exams
* From correspondents in London

PRINCE William has passed his flying exams
for Britain's Royal Air Force,
paving the way for a career as a
search-and-rescue helicopter pilot.

The 27-year-old prince,
who is second in line to the English throne,
was said to be "relieved, pleased and exhausted"
after completing the exams.

"It's a pretty tough course with a relatively high drop-out rate -
but he came through it reasonably comfortably,"
a St James's Palace source told The Sun newspaper today.

Prince William, who is due to visit Australia and New Zealand
early in 2010, is now expected to begin learning
specific rescue techniques as part of the next phase of his training.

The Charge

The "slightly abridged" version of the famous millionaire's
eccentric life

The Case

At the time of his death in 1976, Howard Hughes

was one of the most famous and enigmatic figures in American business and
celebrity. Taking over the family's prosperous tool company when he was
just eighteen (his father having passed away suddenly) Hughes found
himself with the money to indulge his still maturing and ambitious
whims. From producing movies in Hollywood to designing and building experimental aircraft and automobiles, he strove for perfection and approached all projects with a cockeyed optimism. Eventually forming Hughes Aircraft and creating national and international commercial air travel as we know it today, the latter part of his life was filled with scandal, government investigations and a growing mental illness. When he finally died at
age seventy, he had become the source of oddball speculation and public
fascination. Rumor had it he was a sickly loner, living life in a
bathrobe and Kleenex box slippers, endlessly watching Ice Station Zebra
(his favorite film). Others felt he was simply using his shadowy image
to move beyond the public spotlight (which had never been kind to him)
and into a secluded realm of personal privacy and happiness. In 1977, the television mini-series The Amazing Howard Hughes attempted to address the conjecture, the sensationalism and the truth behind this eccentric entrepreneur.

For anyone living in the late '60s and early '70s, the mysterious life
of rich industrialist Howard Hughes, his seclusion from the real world,
and hermitic existence complete with bizarre rumors of germ phobia, bodily function collection,
and obsessive-compulsive behavior was awash in the intrigue of urban
legend, the fodder for cocktail party discussions and tabloid stories.
Like Michael Jackson throughout the '80s and '90s, this "King of Prop"
generated an unbelievable level of hearsay, the "why" of his current
living arrangements as important as the "where" and "how."
Major news organizations spent cover stories trying to get the
definitive bit of investigative journalism and con artists looking to
cash in began taking advantage of the man in his absence. Typical of
such individuals was Melvin Dummar. Upon Hughes' death, the Nevada gas
station owner produced a "Mormon" will, supposedly executed by Hughes
(and later rejected by the court system) leaving him $156 million of the
reclusive millionaire's estate. Dummar swore that this act of
generosity resulted from a late night drive across the Southwestern
desert, where he picked up a hitchhiking Hughes and befriended him.
Jonathan Demme would later milk this incident for all its darkly comic
undertones, creating the wildly inventive Melvin and Howard. As
outlandish as it was, Dummar's story seemed to make sense in light of
the weird gossip and what little was really known about Hughes.

Too bad we experience none of that here in The Amazing Howard Hughes.
Originally conceived as a multi-night "event" for CBS, and coming just
one year after Hughes' death (1977), the initial running time for
this biographical film was over three hours. Anchor Bay's folly, in
releasing this DVD, is that it provides a truncated version, which
completely destroys the performances, the drama, and (most importantly)
Hughes' life story. All we are left with in this DVD version are
underdeveloped subplots, absent
character development, and zero depth.
We never learn how Hughes got involved in movies
.
We never learn about
his personal life, although he "seems" to date several famous women
(Ginger Rogers, Katharine Hepburn, and Jane Russell)
.
And his famous transition from powerful businessman into wildly
psychotic recluse comes virtually out of the blue. One moment he's
testifying before Congress. The next he is wiping germs off everything
he comes in contact with and looking like Cha-Ka from Land of the Lost.
Considering this DVD is probably a "theatrical" version of
the film (the European distribution credits hint at a big screen
release across the Atlantic), it is still antithetical to the notion of
presenting a detailed biography on Hughes, since the shorter running
time treats the events of his life like skips of a stone cast across a
lake, barely skimming the surface. In many ways, it does as great a
disservice to Hughes as the now infamous, fraudulent Clifford Irving book did.

About the only thing The Amazing Howard Hughes has going for it is the
acting. And even then characters are minimized or completely missing
from the movie, thanks to the shortened running time. Tommy Lee Jones is
perfectly fine, able to assay the tricky transition from youthful to
mature Hughes with body language and vocal modulation. You never really
believe he is Howard Hughes, since he is a much meatier, physical
presence. But he does a good job of suggesting Hughes' charm,
enthusiasm, and adventurous spirit. But everyone else in this chopped up
television show should sue. Morgan Brittany played one of Hughes'
wives. Her performance is completely removed here. Tovah Feldshuh does a
fine Katharine Hepburn impersonation. But what the
famous actress and Hughes meant to each other is never explained,
thanks once again to hideous editing. Famous faces like Ed Harris (Apollo 13)
and Howard Hesseman appear in single scenes for about thirty seconds
total. And Marla Carlis just gets to sit around looking like Jane
Russell (kinda) since any dialogue or scenes that the character may have
had were, again, vivisected out via this DVD. It's not just the
characters that get shortchanged. Major events in Hughes' life
(the founding of Hughes Aircraft, his battles with Hollywood censors,
dealings with the government and involvement in World War II) are
completely glossed over. It's sad when a two-minute extra about his legendary
wooden airplane, the Spruce Goose, tells us more about
why the Senate was holding hearings into Hughes' business dealings than
the film proper does.

The only question one can ask Anchor Bay is why? Why release this
simplistic, detail free set of weak cinematic Cliff's Notes? It's not
like the extra space was used to gussy up the print, since The Amazing
Howard Hughes is a true visual mess. Cropped to create a 1.78:1
anamorphic widescreen image, there is important top and bottom
information lost (people's heads, buildings, etcetera) to recreate a
letterbox look and feel. It doesn't work. And the additional disc room
was not utilized in the overall mastering. The print is atrocious and
the transfer is a compression nightmare of snow-filled night scenes,
fuzzy details, and massive artifacting. In some cases it renders the
film unwatchable. The sound is nice, but by this point who really cares?
Aside from the aforementioned newsreel footage, there is a poster and
still gallery (all publicity puke) and a pseudo-interesting Tommy Lee
Jones biography. But none of this comes close to making up for what is a
standard made-for-television biography eviscerated by massive,
inexcusable bowdlerization.
Rumor has it that Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio
want to take on the Hughes legend in a new, updated biographical film.

At any length, it would have to be infinitely better than the condensed
crap that Anchor Bay is trying to pawn off here.
When The
Rocketeer offers a more tantalizing portrayal
of the elusive millionaire than
The Amazing Howard Hughes,

something is just not right.

New generation polymer composite materials
are ideal for use in the transport industry.

Lightweight composites to get trimmer and smarter
Reference: 09/224
CSIRO researchers have set themselves the goal
of producing a new generation of super-strong,
lightweight polymer composite materials for use in aircraft,
road vehicles, trains and ferries.

Aerospace manufacturers
have already embraced
weight-reducing composites,
but until recently they were used in
only a limited range of applications.
However, in the new generation
of aircraft being developed and built today,

polymer composites are used extensively,
for fuselage and other components,
saving fuel and cutting emissions.

A team led by Dr Stuart Bateman at CSIRO Materials Science and
Engineering is designing and testing even lighter and stronger polymer
composites that will out-perform the conventional materials currently
used in the transportation sector.

"Composites with improved mechanical properties allow greater design
flexibility, and the down-gauging of wall thickness for additional
weight savings," Dr Bateman said. "We use nano-technologies to improve
the mechanical performance of conventional composite materials, and at
the same time introduce valuable functional properties previously not
possible in composites."
“We use nano-technologies to improve the mechanical performance of
conventional composite materials, and at the same time introduce
valuable functional properties previously not possible in composites.”
Dr Bateman

Composite materials with new functional properties are created by
dispersing low concentrations of specially chosen additives within the
polymer matrix. By this means the CSIRO team is producing polymers with
unprecedented properties, such as strength, stiffness, impact
resistance, fire resistance, and heat reflectance.

Dr Bateman said one of the team’s key competencies is designing and
dispersing functional additives on a nanometer scale using conventional
polymer composite processing equipment.

"The design of the additive and controlling its dispersion are both
crucial to producing the mix of properties required. We will continue to
partner with manufacturers who can exploit our research capabilities
for producing their own unique applications," he said.

Some of the new functional additives are effective at trace
concentrations, below one per cent. This low content is a bonus because
it avoids unwanted changes in the material’s processing ability and end
properties such as surface finish, while still improving mechanical
properties.

A good example of this is a new generation of nano-scale flame
retardants that CSIRO is testing. These are proving superior to the
existing flame retardant technology, which is based on the use of
halogenated compounds in concentrations that often reduce mechanical
performance.

Many traditional halogenated compounds are falling out of favour with
health and environmental agencies, creating a pressing need for
alternatives.
Super-light composites
with enhanced flame retardant properties
are expected to find uses in
transportation,
infrastructure
and in
defence applications.

New Russian missile failure

Russia's new nuclear-capable missile
suffered another failed test launch,
the defence ministry said Thursday,
solving the mystery of a spectacular
plume of white light that appeared over Norway.

The Bulava missile was test-fired from the submarine Dmitry Donskoi in
the White Sea early Wednesday but failed at the third stage, the defence
ministry said in a statement.

The pre-dawn morning launch coincided with the appearance of an
extraordinary light over northern Norway that captivated observers.

Images of the light that appeared in the sky above the Norwegian city of
Tromso and elsewhere prompted explanations ranging from a meteor,
northern lights, a failed missile or even a UFO.

Describing the latest failure of the Bulava as a major embarrassment for
the military, leading Russian defence analyst Pavel Felgenhauer said
the images were consistent with a missile failure.

"Such lights and clouds appear from time to time when a missile fails in
the upper layers of the atmosphere and have been reported before," he
told AFP.

"At least this failed test made some nice fireworks for the Norwegians," he joked.

The White Sea, which is the usual site for such missile tests by Russian submarines, lies close to Norway's own Arctic region.

This was the 12th test launch of the Bulava and the seventh time the firing has ended in failure, the Interfax news agency said.

The submarine-launched missile is central to Russia's plan to revamp its
ageing weapons arsenal but is beset by development problems.

"The first two stages of the rocket worked but in the final and third
stage there was a technical failure," the defence ministry said in a
statement.

The statement said the problem was with the engine in the third stage, while in past launches the first stage had been faulty.

The problems with the Bulava have become an agonising issue for the
defence ministry, which has ploughed a large proportion of its
procurement budget into ensuring the missile becomes the key element of
its rocket forces.

The previous failure in July forced the resignation of Yury Solomonov,
the director of the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology which is
responsible for developing the missile.

Felgenhauer said that it had dealt a serious blow to Russia's bid to maintain a credible nuclear deterrent.

"By the year 2030, Russia could lose its position as a global nuclear
power if the problems are not solved. And it could be that these
missiles will never fly properly.

"The Russian defence industry has disintegrated to such an extent that
it simply cannot make such a complicated system work. Technology and
expertise have been lost," he said.

The problems are also a major political embarrassment, coming as Russia
negotiates with the United States the parameters of a new arms reduction
treaty to replace the 1991 START accord.

The treaty expired on December 5, and despite intense negotiations the two sides have yet to agree the text of a new deal.

In a separate development, a successful test-firing took place of
Russia's intercontinental surface-to-surface ballistic missile Topol
RS-12M, news agencies quoted a statement from the strategic rocket
forces as saying.

The missile -- introduced to the rocket forces before the fall of the
Soviet Union -- was fired from the southern Russian region of Astrakhan
and hit its target at a testing range in neighbouring Kazakhstan.

The Bulava, which can be equipped with up to 10 individually targeted
nuclear warheads, has a maximum range of 8,000 kilometres (5,000 miles).

It is the sea-based version of the Topol-M, Russia's new
surface-to-surface intercontinental missile, and designed to be launched
from Moscow's newest Borei class of submarines.

Defence analysts say that a further headache for the military is that
the new submarines are designed to be compatible with Bulava and if the
new missile fails to work the vessels will be virtually useless.

AN Australian bird has become the inspiration for a hydrogen-powered jet that can fly anywhere on Earth without stopping.

The Lockheed Stratoliner concept features the wings of the bar-tailed godwit.
The godwit holds the record for the longest known non-stop flight by a bird without feeding
at 11,680km.

UK designer William Brown believes the oversized wings will generate large amounts of lift and allow the plane to fly at higher altitudes, with less resistance.
Mr Brown’s design also features four cryogenic hydrogen turbofan engines -
which will produce no pollution and use less fuel.

Cryogenic hydrogen has more than twice the energy of traditional jet fuels and is lighter.
Even though The Lockheed Stratoliner is just a concept, some airline manufacturers have begun testing hydrogen-power. Boeing unveiled its first hydrogen powered plane in July 2010.

Virus hits US drone fleet: report
From: AFP
October 09, 2011
6:35AM
A COMPUTER virus has hit the
US Predator and Reaper drone fleet
that Washington deploys
to hunt down militants,
logging the keystrokes of pilots
remotely flying missions,
Wired magazine reported.

The virus was first detected about two weeks ago by the military's Host-Based Security System, but it had not halted missions flown remotely over Afghanistan and other warzones from Nevada's Creech Air Force Base, Wired said Friday.

No classified information was believed to have been lost or sent outside the network, though the resilient virus resisted several attempts to remove it.

"We keep wiping it off, and it keeps coming back," a source familiar with the
network infection told the US magazine. "We think it's benign. But we just don't know."

Military network security specialists said it remained unclear whether the virus was intentional and how far it had spread, but they were certain it had infected Creech's classified and unclassified machines. Secret data may thus have leaked out and reached
someone outside military officials.

The US military does not hide its own drone flights in Libya or the war in Afghanistan,
in contrast to the CIA's covert missions to take out Al-Qaeda extremists in Pakistan,
Yemen and elsewhere. The drones have become a critical weapon of choice for the United States in fighting militants abroad.

In Pakistan alone, around 30 drone strikes have been reported since elite US forces killed Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden on May 2 near the country's main military academy in Abbottabad, close to the capital.

The virus is believed to have spread at Creech through removable hard drives used to load map updates and transfer mission videos from one computer to another, Wired said. Drone
units at other US Air Force bases around the world have now been told to stop using them.

"It's getting a lot of attention," the source told Wired. "But no one's panicking. Yet."

PLAN TO SAFEGUARD FALKLANDS
MIGHTY DUCKS 276355_1
Britain currently has more than 1,000 troops,
four Typhoon jet fighters and a frigate based there

Sunday October 9,2011

By Marco Giannangeli

BRITAIN will use bases in South Africa to regain the Falkland Islands if they are ever captured.

Impeccable sources have told the Sunday Express
that a special “Plan B” has already been put in place in the unlikely event the islands fall into Argentinian hands.

South
Africa, about 3,800 miles from the Falkland Islands, could act as a
refuelling and rearming stage, though no official details have been
released.

Separate sources revealed Defence Secretary Dr Liam Fox has been taking the Falklands
issue “very seriously indeed”, with at least one meeting a week on the
subject.

Military analysts have long argued that without an aircraft carrier, Harrier jump jets or
the ability to put together a task force, the islands remain an easy
target for Argentina, which has never given up its claim to the islands
and has intensified its demands since oil exploration began.

In June the country’s President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner called David Cameron “arrogant” for insisting the islands will remain sovereign UK territory as long as their inhabitants wish to stay British.

In
September British oil company Rockhopper Exploration revealed further
significant new finds around the islands. It said there is enough oil to
make the Falklands a significant production centre.
