VETERAN ABC journalist Paul Lockyer was among three people killed in
a helicopter crash in remote South Australia last night.

Pilot Gary Ticehurst, reporter Paul Lockyer and cameraman John Bean are missing and presumed dead in the Lake Eyre region.

ABC
managing director Mark Scott said early this morning: "It's been the
longest of nights and we think it will be the saddest of days here at
the ABC.

"Paul, Gary and John have each given decades of service
to the ABC. They are passionate about their work and finding great
stories from all over Australia to bring to the public.

"Our love, thoughts and prayers go out to family and friends of Paul, Gary and John at this terrible time."

The
helicopter crashed on the eastern side of Lake Eyre, approximately
142km northeast of William Creek and 146km north-northeast of Marree.

William Creek pilot Trevor Wright told Adelaidenow.com.au that the helicopter been carrying out aerial photography and video work when it went down.

"When
the helicopter didn't turn up, they became anxious and sent out a
search party on foot; then they found the wreck," Mr Wright said.

The ABC reported that a person at an outpost station had seen the helicopter going up in flames.

Mr
Scott said he received a call from ABC staff about 8.15pm last night,
informing him that a helicopter had gone down and that the broadcaster's
helicopter was in the region.

He said staff then assembled a team to try to get information.

``But they were anticipating no survivors and I think they have now said that some bodies have been found at the scene.''

Police have confirmed that two people are dead.

``As
a result of an initial search, police have located two deceased persons
in the wreckage,'' Inspector Glen Sickerdick said in a statement on
Friday.

A search is under way for the third person believed to
have been in the helicopter. A police investigation has also commenced,
Insp Sickerdick said.

Occupants of the helicopter had been due to meet a group on the edge of the lake for dinner, Mr Wright said.

``When
the helicopter didn't turn up, they became anxious and sent out a
search party on foot; they found the wreck,'' Mr Wright said.

The ABC said the WA-born Lockyer was one of its most experienced journalists.

In
a career spanning more than 40 years, he has worked as a correspondent
in Washington, Singapore and throughout Asia and won a Logie Award for
best TV reporter.

Lockyer, born in the
small WA Wheatbelt town of Corrigin, was one of the ABC's most
experienced reporters, with more than 39 years in the job.

He began working for the ABC in Perth in 1969 and went on to become a foreign correspondent before joining the Nine Network.

He rejoined the ABC in 1999 as Olympics reporter.

More
recently he had focused on rural affairs, including issues involving
water resources and had also reported from the Brisbane floods in early
2011.

``There's a certain kind of
genius that can find the simplicity on the other side of complexity and
that's what Paul could do,'' Mr Scott said.

``He could take these
very complex stories and find compelling ways to illustrate them ... so
we could all understand these very significant issues.''

Bean is an award-winning lighting camera operator who has worked for the ABC for 20 years.

``He's the cameraman that all the journalists wanted to take along and do the filming with,'' Mr Scott said.

``He was a great partner and a very talented craftsman.''

Bean,
who is married to an ABC staff member in Brisbane, has worked for the
7.30 Report, Catalyst, the New Inventors and Gardening Australia.

Mr Ticehurst is one of the most experienced media pilots in Australia.

``Gary really set up our helicopter team. He has really been the helicopter pilot here at the ABC for 30 years now,'' he said.

``Everyone in the news room knows Gary, a larger than life figure, very very loveable. Loves his helicopters.''

Mr
Ticehurst has close to 40 years of helicopter operational experience,
which includes 30 years as chief pilot of Film Helicopters Australia,
working with the Australian film and television industry.

``One of the things that everyone has been saying overnight about these three
guys is that they were three of the nicest guys you could ever hope to
meet,'' Mr Scott said. ''(They were) absolute gentlemen, a delight to
work with ... and much much loved here at the ABC.''

Mr Scott said he had spoken to the wives of the three men.

''(They are) very sad, very brave, waiting for news. Last night I think friends and family came around.

``There
is going to be great sadness here at the ABC but our hearts really go
out to the families, shocking news for them and we are going to support
them in every way we can.''

Yesterday, we had a guest over,

was texting me yet more threats.

Now, only going by those text
from last night and yesterday,
that guest had serious concerns
over what they

contained.

that guest was The Same Person

'That' First Time, that 'Billy Ruben'
then proceeded to spam threads
with a completely slanderous version
of what was and wasn't said by whom,
and what sort of electronics my house contains.

So again, I asked 'Billy Ruben' to Call
and Speak To THAT PERSON while he was here,
(and 'Billy Ruben' was spending all his time
texting threats to my phone anyway),
so that he (the guest who was also here and
witnessed that first call from 'Billy Ruben),
could confirm (and so, easy 'Billy Ruben's mind),
that there was only the TV on in the background,
and that I only have one, very old, weak and
slow computer.

'Billy Ruben', again, refused to speak to him.

But back to the nature of those threats.

They are very personal, very sick,
dangerously obsessive,

Oldest fossil found in WA: scientists

Scientists in Western Australia have uncovered fossils
which they say are the oldest evidence of life on earth.

A team of researchers from the University of WA
and Britain's Oxford University say they have proof
that the microscopic fossils, found at Strelley Pool
near Port Headland, are more than 3.4 billion years old.

The sulphur-based bacteria was found well preserved
between quartz sand grains in prehistoric sedimentary rocks,
Oxford University's Professor Martin Brasier said.

"We can be very sure about the age (of the fossils)
as the rocks were formed between two volcanic successions
that narrow the possible age down to a few tens of millions of years,"
he said in a statement.

The fossils are very clearly preserved, showing precise
cell-like structures all of a similar size, the research team said.

"At last we have good solid evidence
for life over 3.4 billion years ago.
It confirms there were bacteria
at this time, living without oxygen,"
Prof Brasier said.

"Such bacteria are still common today.
Sulphur bacteria are found in
smelly ditches, soil, hot springs, hydrothermal
vents -
anywhere where there's little free oxygen
and they can live off organic matter."

In recent years new scientific benchmarks have
been introduced that must be satisfied by researchers
before claims can be made about the age of fossils.
The West Australian fossils pass crucial tests including that
the forms seen in the rocks are biological and have not occurred
through some mineralisation process, Prof Brasier said.

"We're now making detailed comparisons with all other early microfossils,
and we're very optimistic for future finds," he said.
"The work also has implications for looking for life on other planets,
giving an indication of what evidence for such life might look like."

TWO men critically injured
in a backyard explosion
in Cannons Creek last night
were making a home-made explosive,
police say.
Neighbours felt shockwaves as the blast ripped through the area
about 11pm, with one of the men losing both of his legs in the accident.
The blast happened at a gathering of family and friends where the men in
their 20s were mixing commonly bought chemicals in a metal tin, with up
to 12 others standing back.
When asked if the explosion was caused by an amateur bomb,
Arson Squad Senior Detective Cameron Lunny said:
"I'd call it an improvised explosive device".
"It's been likened to a huge thunder clap from what I understand," he said.
He said the men were just experimenting with the chemicals, which the Herald Sun has chosen not to name, and that nothing sinister was at play.

"They were just having a bit of a muck around I think,'' Sen Det Lunny said.
"There's certainly no indication there was anything apart from experimenting."
The 23-year-old Cannons Creek man and 24-year-old from Pakenham were
standing over the mixture, trying to bury it when it went off.
No-one else was hurt and there was no property damaged,
despite the strength of the blast.
Next door neighbour Arlene Trevethan said the explosion created shockwaves.
"It just shook the house. I came out and I thought it was a fire or something,'' she said.
Another neighbour initially thought an earthquake had struck.
Local Robert Dudgeon said he had heard similar explosions in the past, which police are investigating.
"There were others here over the past month or so,'' he said.
"One night there were three in a row. Whether it's the same source or not, I don't know."
Sen Det Lunny pleaded with others not to experiment with dangerous chemicals.
"We're getting a lot recently of people undertaking mixing of chemicals.
It just goes to show it's not a very smart thing to do and I just plead to
the people thinking about this not to do it - it's very, very dangerous."
He didn't say whether the injured men had sourced the recipe from the internet or whether charges would be laid.
The two men were airlifted to Melbourne hospitals where they remain in critical conditions.
Intensive care paramedic Ben Meadley said the men suffered extensive injuries.
"A 24 year-old man
suffered significant blast-type injures
to his legs and hands,
the type of injury you would more liken to
what you would see in a war situation
rather than in outer suburban Melbourne,'' he said.
"He also had severe airway burns and facial burns.''
The man was put into an induced coma
before he was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.
A 23-year-old man suffered burns to his face and arms and burns to his airway
which can cause swelling and restrict breathin.

Oldest fossil found in WA: scientists

Scientists in Western Australia have uncovered fossils
which they say are the oldest evidence of life on earth.

A team of researchers from the University of WA
and Britain's Oxford University say they have proof
that the microscopic fossils, found at Strelley Pool
near Port Headland, are more than 3.4 billion years old.

The sulphur-based bacteria was found well preserved
between quartz sand grains in prehistoric sedimentary rocks,
Oxford University's Professor Martin Brasier said.

"We can be very sure about the age (of the fossils)
as the rocks were formed between two volcanic successions
that narrow the possible age down to a few tens of millions of years,"
he said in a statement.

The fossils are very clearly preserved, showing precise
cell-like structures all of a similar size, the research team said.

"At last we have good solid evidence
for life over 3.4 billion years ago.
It confirms there were bacteria
at this time, living without oxygen,"
Prof Brasier said.

"Such bacteria are still common today.
Sulphur bacteria are found in
smelly ditches, soil, hot springs, hydrothermal
vents -
anywhere where there's little free oxygen
and they can live off organic matter."

In recent years new scientific benchmarks have
been introduced that must be satisfied by researchers
before claims can be made about the age of fossils.
The West Australian fossils pass crucial tests including that
the forms seen in the rocks are biological and have not occurred
through some mineralisation process, Prof Brasier said.

"We're now making detailed comparisons with all other early microfossils,
and we're very optimistic for future finds," he said.
"The work also has implications for looking for life on other planets,
giving an indication of what evidence for such life might look like."

PEOPLE around the world remember vividly where they were 10 years
ago when nearly 3000 people died in al-Qa'ida's September 11 attack on
the US.

Australian Federal Police assistant commissioner and terrorism expert Steve Lancaster was sitting in his Sydney home at 5am.

"I got the phone call to say, 'You had better turn on your television'. I
did and was mesmerised as I was watching the footage of planes going
through buildings," he told the Herald Sun.

"If you had asked me on September 10, 2001, what the scenario was in relation to
national security we would have talked about the impact of fraud, technology and the drugs strategy.

"If
scriptwriters came up with a scenario for a blockbuster movie in which
four planes are hijacked by terrorists and flown through buildings,
killing thousands of people, you
would sack them and say it just wasn't believable.

"September
11 was an extraordinarily shocking and crude awakening for police
forces and governments around the world that we were ill-prepared to
cope with such an attack.

"We were not prepared for that, even offshore, let alone in Australia, for an incident of that
sort of magnitude involving Australians.

"We were not prepared from a legislative or investigative point of view to deal with the very
complex issue of dealing with a terrorist attack, or even the planning and preparation for such an attack."

In
an interview to mark the 10th anniversary, Mr Lancaster said if it was
possible for any good to come out of that attack it was the kick it gave
governments and law
enforcement and intelligence agencies to get
serious about developing counter-terrorism strategies and an effective
and co-ordinated response.

"September 11 was a game changer in 2001. It woke everyone up with a real start," he said.
"Then the Bali bombings in 2002, which killed 202 people, including 88 Australians, brought it even closer to home."

It helped that then prime minister John Howard was in the US when the
planes hit the twin towers of New York's World Trade Centre.

He was deeply affected by the attack,
in which 10 Australians died,
and he and his government took no persuading
to significantly boost the resources
of the AFP and other agencies.

The government moved quickly to introduce tough new laws to enable police to charge
terrorists
at the conspiracy stage, well before they committed a terrorist act.
The laws cover engaging in, training, preparing, planning, financing or
providing support for terrorist acts.

Mr Lancaster said earlier
laws clearly did not fit the crime, hampering authorities as they tried
to collect evidence from foreign countries, sometimes on battlefields,
in a form suitable for Australian courts.

Australia spent more than $4 billion on counter terrorism in the four years after
September 11. At least 40 Australian passports have been revoked, or
applications refused, for reasons related to terrorism since then.

The
AFP's budget has grown from almost $304 million in 2001 to $1.3 billion
now and AFP staff numbers have risen from 2851 to 6935. A total of 38
people have been or are being prosecuted as a result of counter
terrorism operations, and 20 have been convicted.

Mr Lancaster has been involved in many investigations, initially as a superintendent,
including
those of convicted terrorism supporter David Hicks and acquitted
Melbourne terrorism suspect Jack Thomas, and since 2009 as national
manager of counter terrorism.

Yesterday he warned that the more
years that passed without a terrorist incident in Australia the more
complacent Australians might become. He appealed to them not to let
complacency set in and to report suspicious activity to police or the
terrorism hotline on 1800 1234 00.

While not wanting to alarm Australians -
the risk of being attacked by a shark was still higher
than being injured in a terrorist attack in Australia -
he said it was just a matter of time
before there was a terrorist attack in Australia -
be it within the next year or the next 25 years.

"We have a very proud history," he said.

"I can say in 25 years we have been able to carry the baton and not have a terrorist incident occur on Australian soil.

"The truth is that when it does happen,
and it will happen, someone will be killed.

"Clearly there are extremists now on our shores.
There are people out there who
genuinely think about doing bad things,
or support terrorist acts overseas."

These people ranged from
hard core religious extremists
to disaffected, vulnerable people
who were prone to being radicalised
by stronger individuals or radical websites.

It was difficult to say how many potential extremists there were in Australia.

"I don't think there is anyone who could put their hand on their heart and
tell you a specific number," he said. "So our view, it's our mantra to keep us on the ball,
that every day we go through with no counter terrorism job we have carried the baton well.

"However, the other side of that is
you are one day closer to
that event happening on our shores."

Australia's national terrorism alert system
was set at medium immediately after the September 11 attacks
and has been at medium since then.

"The medium threat level is indicative of the fact that
there are extremists out there
who do think about committing a terrorist act,
who do actually travel overseas
and have trained and fought in this environment,
or have intended to fight," Mr Lancaster said.

He agreed with comments this year by NSW police chief of counter terrorism,
Assistant Commissioner Peter Drein,
that terrorist planners were moving away from
traditional infrastructure targets and towards
places of mass gathering, such as sporting venues.

"The reality is, if you look at the trends overseas,
the incident will probably not be a great big bomb
going off in a nightclub here for terrorist purposes," he said.

"I'm not saying that won't happen,
because it could happen,
and that is the sort of event
we have trained for in the past eight years or so.

"But looking at the trends, which we all do collectively,
what is more likely is
it might be the mobile shooter or,
potentially, a suicide bomber."

That new trend was behind a major counter terrorism exercise this year
where all relevant Australian agencies practised what to do
in the event of a terrorist
or terrorists creating havoc with
automatic weapons.

"That was actually to test out
how you would deal with a person
who is running round just shooting randomly
at a place of mass gathering,
whether it be a football stadium or an airport
or a shopping centre," he said.

Police and intelligence agencies
depended enormously on public help
to detect potential terrorists
before they reached the stage
of committing an attack.

Mr Lancaster praised the Muslim community for increasingly being prepared
to alert authorities about possible extremists, saying they were far better placed
to recognise the signs of extremism at an early stage than police were.

"We rely on those around those people,
their family, their friends,
to actually start expressing their concerns,"
he said.

"When people get to the stage
of considering a terrorist act
there are invariably signs
that those who know them
might recognise as something
being wrong.
I encourage them to come forward."

He said it would be far better to do that
and be proved wrong about the person
than to do nothing
and later feel terrible about it
because he or she did something.

Bomb hoax closes city loop

UPDATE 7.45pm:
CITY loop train services have resumed
following a bomb hoax
that caused the evacuation
of Parliament Station.

• Metro:

Metro Trains shut down peak-hour services
in the CBD at 7.25pm
after
someone phoned police
alleging a bomb was planted at Parliament Station.

But the caller phoned soon after
to say it was a hoax.

The transport chaos
followed disruptions on the Upfield line
when trains were delayed for up to 30 minutes
after paramedics were called
to attend a sick passenger at Moreland.

Trains from Flinders St to Box Hill
were also delayed for up to 15 minutes.
