Surely I can't be the only one to notice, that the bigger
and more impacting (on those of other nations as well),
that News, from or about Australia is, the more very old,
'cat up trees' level of 'news', is found in "TODAY'S NEWS"
section of The DAVID ICKE OFFICIAL FORUMS, while, The
Big OZ News, remains totally unmentioned, or if posted
at all, barely read, let alone discussed...unless twisted,
to push, David Ickest Type of Religion's Barrows of Poison.
Could it have anything to do with the fact, that so much
of The OZ Big News, is what I warned to watch for, and
what all my attackers, still INSANELY DENY

that caused the evacuation
of Parliament Station.

someone phoned police
alleging a bomb was planted at Parliament Station.
But the caller phoned soon after
to say it was a hoax.
The transport chaos
followed disruptions on the Upfield line
when trains were delayed for up to 30 minutes
after paramedics were called
to attend a sick passenger at Moreland.
Trains from Flinders St to Box Hill
were also delayed for up to 15 minutes.

PEOPLE around the world remember vividly where they were 10 years
ago when nearly 3000 people died in al-Qa'ida's September 11 attack on
the US.
Australian Federal Police assistant commissioner and terrorism expert Steve Lancaster was sitting in his Sydney home at 5am.
"I got the phone call to say, 'You had better turn on your television'. I
did and was mesmerised as I was watching the footage of planes going
through buildings," he told the Herald Sun.
"If you had asked me on September 10, 2001, what the scenario was in relation to
national security we would have talked about the impact of fraud, technology and the drugs strategy.
"If scriptwriters came up with a scenario for a blockbuster movie in which four planes are hijacked by terrorists and flown through buildings, killing thousands of people, you
would sack them and say it just wasn't believable.

"We were not prepared for that, even offshore, let alone in Australia, for an incident of that
sort of magnitude involving Australians.
"We were not prepared from a legislative or investigative point of view to deal with the very
complex issue of dealing with a terrorist attack, or even the planning and preparation for such an attack."
In an interview to mark the 10th anniversary, Mr Lancaster said if it was possible for any good to come out of that attack it was the kick it gave governments and law
enforcement and intelligence agencies to get serious about developing counter-terrorism strategies and an effective and co-ordinated response.
"September 11 was a game changer in 2001. It woke everyone up with a real start," he said.
"Then the Bali bombings in 2002, which killed 202 people, including 88 Australians, brought it even closer to home."
It helped that then prime minister John Howard was in the US when the
planes hit the twin towers of New York's World Trade Centre.
He was deeply affected by the attack,
in which 10 Australians died,
and he and his government took no persuading
to significantly boost the resources
of the AFP and other agencies.
The government moved quickly to introduce tough new laws to enable police to charge
terrorists at the conspiracy stage, well before they committed a terrorist act. The laws cover engaging in, training, preparing, planning, financing or providing support for terrorist acts.
Mr Lancaster said earlier laws clearly did not fit the crime, hampering authorities as they tried to collect evidence from foreign countries, sometimes on battlefields, in a form suitable for Australian courts.
Australia spent more than $4 billion on counter terrorism in the four years after
September 11. At least 40 Australian passports have been revoked, or applications refused, for reasons related to terrorism since then.
The AFP's budget has grown from almost $304 million in 2001 to $1.3 billion now and AFP staff numbers have risen from 2851 to 6935. A total of 38 people have been or are being prosecuted as a result of counter terrorism operations, and 20 have been convicted.
Mr Lancaster has been involved in many investigations, initially as a superintendent,
including those of convicted terrorism supporter David Hicks and acquitted Melbourne terrorism suspect Jack Thomas, and since 2009 as national manager of counter terrorism.
Yesterday he warned that the more years that passed without a terrorist incident in Australia the more complacent Australians might become. He appealed to them not to let complacency set in and to report suspicious activity to police or the terrorism hotline on 1800 1234 00.
While not wanting to alarm Australians -
the risk of being attacked by a shark was still higher
than being injured in a terrorist attack in Australia -
he said it was just a matter of time
before there was a terrorist attack in Australia -
be it within the next year or the next 25 years.
"We have a very proud history," he said.
"I can say in 25 years we have been able to carry the baton and not have a terrorist incident occur on Australian soil.
"The truth is that when it does happen,
and it will happen, someone will be killed.
"Clearly there are extremists now on our shores.
There are people out there who
genuinely think about doing bad things,
or support terrorist acts overseas."
These people ranged from
hard core religious extremists
to disaffected, vulnerable people
who were prone to being radicalised
by stronger individuals or radical websites.
It was difficult to say how many potential extremists there were in Australia.
"I don't think there is anyone who could put their hand on their heart and
tell you a specific number," he said. "So our view, it's our mantra to keep us on the ball,
that every day we go through with no counter terrorism job we have carried the baton well.
"However, the other side of that is
you are one day closer to
that event happening on our shores."
Australia's national terrorism alert system
was set at medium immediately after the September 11 attacks
and has been at medium since then.
"The medium threat level is indicative of the fact that
there are extremists out there
who do think about committing a terrorist act,
who do actually travel overseas
and have trained and fought in this environment,
or have intended to fight," Mr Lancaster said.
He agreed with comments this year by NSW police chief of counter terrorism,
Assistant Commissioner Peter Drein,
that terrorist planners were moving away from
traditional infrastructure targets and towards
places of mass gathering, such as sporting venues.
"The reality is, if you look at the trends overseas,
the incident will probably not be a great big bomb
going off in a nightclub here for terrorist purposes," he said.
"I'm not saying that won't happen,
because it could happen,
and that is the sort of event
we have trained for in the past eight years or so.
"But looking at the trends, which we all do collectively,
what is more likely is
it might be the mobile shooter or,
potentially, a suicide bomber."
That new trend was behind a major counter terrorism exercise this year
where all relevant Australian agencies practised what to do
in the event of a terrorist
or terrorists creating havoc with
automatic weapons.
"That was actually to test out
how you would deal with a person
who is running round just shooting randomly
at a place of mass gathering,
whether it be a football stadium or an airport
or a shopping centre," he said.
Police and intelligence agencies
depended enormously on public help
to detect potential terrorists
before they reached the stage
of committing an attack.
Mr Lancaster praised the Muslim community for increasingly being prepared
to alert authorities about possible extremists, saying they were far better placed
to recognise the signs of extremism at an early stage than police were.
"We rely on those around those people,
their family, their friends,
to actually start expressing their concerns,"
he said.
"When people get to the stage
of considering a terrorist act
there are invariably signs
that those who know them
might recognise as something
being wrong.
I encourage them to come forward."
He said it would be far better to do that
and be proved wrong about the person
than to do nothing
and later feel terrible about it
because he or she did something.

This secret Aborginal site near the You Yangs
seems to be an astronomical marker.
A SECRET Aboriginal sacred site
just north of the You Yangs
is at the centre of a land battle.
The stone circle, said to be older than Stonehenge, is an
astronomical marker. Its two straighter sides point to where the sun
rises on the shortest and longest days of the year.
Stonehenge dates from about 2500 BC, and the earliest pyramid in Egypt was built
from about 2630 BC, suggesting the local Aborigines could have been the
world's first astronomers.
Known as Wurdi Youang, the site lies on
Wathaurong Co-Operative land, which could be acquired by the State
Government after it was last year designated part of a grassland
reserve.
Wathaurong cultural officer Reg Abrahams said the co-op
was granted the land in 2006 and were investigating having it declared
an Indigenous Protected Area, which would likely see it become part of
the National Reserve System.
However, the planned expansion of
Melbourne's Urban Growth Boundary will see a large area of land closer
to Geelong including the stone circle site set aside as grassland
reserve area and unable to be developed in any way.
Mr Abrahams said it was hoped that one day community training and
programs could be held at the site, which could be a good base for
Aboriginal cultural tourism in the area.
In the meantime, the
exact location of the ancient stone circle is a closely guarded secret,
but it may be opened to the public in the future and become something of
a tourist Mecca.
Mr Abrahams said astrophysicists wanted to conduct some tests on the stone circle to determine its age.
"But they believe it is older than Stonehenge in England," he said.
"It basically aligns with the winter solstice, the summer solstice and the
equinoxes which is the shortest day of the year, the longest day of the
year, and the 12 hours day and 12 hours night.
"We've got another site
at a quarry near the You Yangs,
which has been radio-carbon dated
to about 12,500 years ago."
CSIRO scientists have said the site would need some careful study to put a precise date on it.
Monash University Aboriginal archaeologist Dr Ian McNiven said yesterday there
were some new techniques available that could be used to date the site.
Dr McNiven said one of these had to be carried out at night. It involved
lifting up one of the stones, taking a soil sample and testing it to see
how long since it had been exposed to sunlight.
"It would need a very stable landscape to have survived that long, but it's not impossible," he said.
"There are some very old stable landscapes around so it's not inconceivable
that something on the surface could be of that age, especially if it was
used generation after generation so that it has been looked after.
"Some of those sites can go back thousands of years."
WHAT IS IT
WURDI YOUANG is one spelling for the Aboriginal name for the You Yangs, meaning large hill.
IT is said to be older than Stonehenge, which dates from around 2500BC
IT comprises 95 blocks of basalt still in obvious alignment, and is about 50m wide.
THE stone circle is ovoid or egg-shaped in appearance from above.
IT faces east, and its two straighter sides point to the horizon where the sun rises
at the summer solstice and winter solstice.
STONE circles are thought to have also been used for ceremonies.

is at least 780,000 years old and probably much older," Dr Prideaux said.
"Surrounding these larger bones are literally hundreds of songbird bones, a
situation mirrored through the rest of the deposit.

This secret Aborginal site near the You Yangs
seems to be an astronomical marker.
A SECRET Aboriginal sacred site
just north of the You Yangs
is at the centre of a land battle.
The stone circle, said to be older than Stonehenge, is an
astronomical marker. Its two straighter sides point to where the sun
rises on the shortest and longest days of the year.
Stonehenge dates from about 2500 BC, and the earliest pyramid in Egypt was built
from about 2630 BC, suggesting the local Aborigines could have been the
world's first astronomers.
Known as Wurdi Youang, the site lies on
Wathaurong Co-Operative land, which could be acquired by the State
Government after it was last year designated part of a grassland
reserve.
Wathaurong cultural officer Reg Abrahams said the co-op
was granted the land in 2006 and were investigating having it declared
an Indigenous Protected Area, which would likely see it become part of
the National Reserve System.
However, the planned expansion of
Melbourne's Urban Growth Boundary will see a large area of land closer
to Geelong including the stone circle site set aside as grassland
reserve area and unable to be developed in any way.
Mr Abrahams said it was hoped that one day community training and
programs could be held at the site, which could be a good base for
Aboriginal cultural tourism in the area.
In the meantime, the
exact location of the ancient stone circle is a closely guarded secret,
but it may be opened to the public in the future and become something of
a tourist Mecca.
Mr Abrahams said astrophysicists wanted to conduct some tests on the stone circle to determine its age.
"But they believe it is older than Stonehenge in England," he said.
"It basically aligns with the winter solstice, the summer solstice and the
equinoxes which is the shortest day of the year, the longest day of the
year, and the 12 hours day and 12 hours night.
"We've got another site
at a quarry near the You Yangs,
which has been radio-carbon dated
to about 12,500 years ago."
CSIRO scientists have said the site would need some careful study to put a precise date on it.
Monash University Aboriginal archaeologist Dr Ian McNiven said yesterday there
were some new techniques available that could be used to date the site.
Dr McNiven said one of these had to be carried out at night. It involved
lifting up one of the stones, taking a soil sample and testing it to see
how long since it had been exposed to sunlight.
"It would need a very stable landscape to have survived that long, but it's not impossible," he said.
"There are some very old stable landscapes around so it's not inconceivable
that something on the surface could be of that age, especially if it was
used generation after generation so that it has been looked after.
"Some of those sites can go back thousands of years."
WHAT IS IT
WURDI YOUANG is one spelling for the Aboriginal name for the You Yangs, meaning large hill.
IT is said to be older than Stonehenge, which dates from around 2500BC
IT comprises 95 blocks of basalt still in obvious alignment, and is about 50m wide.
THE stone circle is ovoid or egg-shaped in appearance from above.
IT faces east, and its two straighter sides point to the horizon where the sun rises
at the summer solstice and winter solstice.
STONE circles are thought to have also been used for ceremonies.

Families are being forced to move out as
drive-by attacks create neighbourhoods of fear, write Nick O'Malley
and Nick Ralston.
The family had fled Afghanistan through Iran five years
ago and built a new life in Sydney. Asieh had finished school at St
Marys and done well. She was studying for a medical science exam when,
about 10 o'clock on June 30, the gunshots broke the night.
It wasn't the first time.
Shots had been fired in Price Street, Merrylands, in May. When the Herald
visited this week, a ''for rent'' sign was on the wooden fence at the
front of Asieh's house. Furniture was on the lawn awaiting removal.
Asieh wouldn't be photographed, nor did she want her full name published.
''You don't expect it to happen in a country like this,'' she said.
Next door, her neighbour, a short woman aged 68 with a worn and friendly face, was watering her olive trees.
She wouldn't be named or photographed either. She seemed resigned to violence in the street.
''I've been here 50 years, I raised my boys here, I'm close to my church, I don't want to go. I don't know what to do.''
She pointed across the road to a new two-storey home.
''Look there, a nice family, two kids, they just built their house and they want to sell it, but no one will buy.''
At night she rolls steel shutters over her front windows.
''I know the bullets can come through but it feels better.''
She is looking forward to summer, when it stays light longer.
People on Price Street are reluctant to use names, but
they know why their street is being shot up. Their neighbour is Wahiba
Ibrahim, the matriarch of the Ibrahim family, which has been the target
in a series of shootings across Sydney over the past 15 months.
The Ryde home of her daughter, Armani Stelio, was
peppered in a drive-by attack in November and two months later there
was a shooting outside Wahiba Ibrahim's Merrylands home.
The shootings followed a series of tattoo parlour
attacks, drive-by shootings and brawls that were believed to be related
to a feud between the gang Notorious, which is associated with the
Ibrahim family, and the Comanchero Motorcycle Club. But police believe
some of the recent drive-by shootings were carried out by members of the
Hells Angels.
Asieh and her parents don't care who is pulling the trigger.
Ten minutes away at Greenacre a mower roars at the back
of a fibro house while a tired-looking woman wearing an apron and
holding a Barbie doll politely but firmly asks to be left alone.
Last Monday night about a dozen shots were fired back
and forth between a pair of cars out the front.
A police media release described the two bullets that slammed into the family home as ''stray''. Little comfort.
Across the road, two doors down live another couple. She is 89, he is 91. They are happy to talk, but will not be named.
They were in their living room when the gunfire started.
''I thought it was firecrackers, but he said it was
guns,'' she says, pointing to her husband, who was about to head off to
the shops. Police have since arrested three people.
Drive-by shootings were not a part of Sydney's crime
culture until the late 1990s, says the former assistant NSW police
commissioner Clive Small.
He says they are a tactic often used by Middle Eastern
crime gangs, whose members often come from cultures where gun ownership
and use is far more common than in Australia.
There were 60 drive-by shootings in Sydney last year, and
70 in 2009. But some local government areas have been suffering
disproportionately.
Since 2007 there have been 29 in Bankstown, 43 in Fairfield and 24 in Auburn.
Each time a thug in a car opens fire they not only
spread fear through a community, they put innocent lives at risk, Small
says.
Bob Knight, 66, was driving his truck past a KFC car park
on Milperra Road when a shootout erupted between rival gangs in June
2009.
He was hit in the head by a ''stray'' bullet and died in his truck cabin.
Arrests tend to slow the number of shootings, Small says, but gangs fill vacuums and the shooting soon breaks out again.
He believes public gun play is a sign of an immature criminal.
''Sadly, it is only going to go away when they get more professional at their business.''

While the New Testament has been used by Gentile anti-Semites, even within the Church, the writers of the New Testament were Jewish, and therefore their arguments, even critical ones, were from the vantage point of being an intra-communal debate, not inter-communal accusation. Even where the criticism is harsh, it is directed towards a particular group or sect of Jews because of their practices, which needed correcting. For example, even though Yeshua spoke harshly to the Pharisees, He nevertheless said of them, "The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. We Gentile Christians are told that the Jews are "beloved for the sake of the Patriarchs" (Rom. 11:28). They are a chosen people who fulfilled their calling and brought the Gospel to the world. They were chosen to:
Be obedient to God's Word and demonstrate to the world as "a light to the nations."
Hear God's Word and record it - the Bible.
Be the human channel for the Messiah.
The Jewish people have fulfilled their role. The promise to the world through Abraham was that, "in you will all the nations on the earth be blessed" (Gen. 12:3). They were to be a light unto the nations and, while they made mistakes as we all do, they did demonstrate the power of God on earth, they did hear God's Word and record it so that we have the Bible, and they were the human channel for the Messiah, who was born, ministered, died, rose from the dead, ascended to heaven and will return to Jerusalem, Israel, in a day yet to come.
God made an everlasting covenant between the land of Israel and the Jewish people that must be fulfilled and completed or His Word, the Bible, will be proven a lie, which it is not. God will never forget or annul His ancient people. If God will not fulfil His promises to Israel, what guarantee do we have that He will fulfil His promises to the Church? (See Jeremiah 31:35-37).

To Israel still belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship and the promises (Rom. 9:4).
The gifts and calling of God for Israel are irrevocable (Rom. 11:29).
There are 77 references to Israel in the NT and none of them refer to the Church. Try replacing the words, "the Church," where Israel is mentioned and the passage is rendered unreadable and silly, e.g., Rom. 10:1, "Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved." If you put "the Church" where Israel is mentioned, then it is redundant. The Church is the body of saved believers, so how could Paul's prayer be for the Church to be saved?
Psalm 105 has a seven-fold affirmation of God's promises of Canaan to Abraham. This is an everlasting promise, as was Genesis 12:1-3.
Jeremiah 31:35-37 speaks of the everlasting nature of God's promises to and for Israel, the Jewish people, which is as sure as the sun that shines by day and the moon and stars that glow in the night.
The end-time prophecies, which speak of the return of the House of Jacob to their land (Israel) and its restoration, have overwhelmingly been fulfilled in Israel and the Jewish people in the past 120 years. (See, Isa. 11:11-12; Eze. 37:1-14; Eze. 36; Eze. 35:1, Isa. 43:5,6; Jer. 16:14-16; Isa. 60:9-11; Isa. 49:22-23, etc.).
The Gospel and Yeshua came "to the Jews first, then the Greek" (Rom. 2:9,10; Matt:10:5-7;15:24). There is a distinction in roles between the two. Galatians 3:28 says: "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus." This is speaking of everyone's standing before God as equals, because we are all sinners saved by God's grace and the atoning work on the Cross. Nevertheless, our roles here on earth are definitely distinct; e.g., men and women, mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, etc. all have distinct roles to play. Likewise, Jews and Gentiles have distinct roles to play.
What is the Role of the Church?
"On this rock I will build My Church, and the gates of Hell will not overcome it" (Matt. 16:18). The Church is built on the testimony and understanding of Peter, who is Jewish. Ephesians 2:11-14 indicates that Israel and the Jews (we) were chosen, but Gentiles (you) were also included.
The Church is related to Israel and partakers of the covenants, promises, and hopes, but we have not been called to usurp them. Our relationship is as "grafted in" (Rom. 11:17); "brought near" (Eph 2:13); "Abraham's offspring" (by faith) (Rom. 4:16); "heirs" to Abraham's promise as adopted sons (Gal. 3:29) and "partakers" (Rom 15:27).
To the world, the Church is called to preach the Gospel to all nations and make disciples (Matt. 28:19-20); to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength; and to love our neighbour as ourselves (Mk. 12:30-31).
To the Jewish people, we are called to show God's love "for the sake of the Patriarchs" (Rom. 11:28), for without them we would not have had God's Word or our Saviour who was a Jew from Israel. We are to show God's mercy (Rom. 11:31). We are to give our material gifts to help them (Rom. 15:27). We are to pray for them and for Israel (Ps. 122:6). We are to be watchman on the walls to protect them (Isa. 62:6,7). We are to help with the aliyah (immigration) to Israel and the building up of Zion (Isa. 60:9-11; Jer. 16:14-16; Isa. 49:22-23).
According to Romans 11, we are two distinct groups, both grafted into the same tree, which are the covenants and promises given to Israel; grounded in the same root, the Messiah; drinking of the same sap, God's Holy Spirit. We do not hold up the tree, but the tree us, and we are forbidden from boasting against or being arrogant to God's covenant people the Jews (Rom. 11:17-18).
What Happens When the Church Replaces Israel?
The Church becomes arrogant and self-centred.
It boasts against the Jews and Israel.
It devalues the role of Israel or has no role for Israel at all.
These attitudes result in anti-Semitism in word and deed.
Without a place for Israel and the Jewish people today, you cannot explain the Bible prophecies, especially the very specific ones being fulfilled in Israel today.
Many New Testament passages do not make sense when the Jewish people are replaced by the Church.
You can lose the significance of the Hebrew Scriptures, the Old Testament, for today. Many Christians boast of being a New Testament (NT) Christian or a NT Church as in the Book of Acts. However, the Bible of the early Church was not the New Testament, which did not get codified until the 4th century, but rather the Hebrew Scriptures.
You can lose the Hebraic/Judaic contextualization of the New Testament, which teaches us more about Yeshua and how to become better disciples.
The Church loses out on the opportunity to participate in God's plan and prophecy for the Church, Israel and the world today.
What Happens When the Church Relates to Israel?
The Church takes its proper role in God's redemptive plan for the world, appreciating God's ongoing covenant relationship and love for Israel and the Jewish people.
We can see the consistency of God's redemptive plan from Genesis to Revelation as an ongoing complementary process, not as disconnected snapshots.
We show love and honour for God's covenant people, not contempt.
We value the Old and New Testaments as equally inspired and significant for the Church today.
Bible prophecy makes sense for today and offers opportunities for involvement in God's plan for Israel.
We become better disciples of Yeshua as we are able to appreciate the Hebraic/Judaic roots that fill in the definitions, concepts, words and events in the New Testament that are otherwise obscured. Why? Many were not explained by the Jewish writers of the New Testament, because they did not feel the need to fill in all the details that were already explained in the Old Testament.
Had the Church understood this very clear message from the beginning, then the sad legacy of anti-Semitic hatred from the Church may have been avoided. The error of Replacement Theology is like a cancer in the Church that has not only caused it to violate God's Word concerning the Jewish people and Israel, but it made us into instruments of hate, not love in God's Name. a: Spiritual aspect: The kingdom of haSatan has been replicated on earth by governments, religions and big business through a hierarchical system of authority. Most churches and synagogues have one person who has veto authority over all the other leaders. Most board rooms have a principle owner who makes the rules because he owns the controlling interest of shares in the company. It would seem that the pastor, priest or rabbi who invests their time leading a congregation should be the one who uses his expertise and guides the congregation. No, not according to the Kingdom of Heaven, the role of leadership in the Kingdom of Heaven is to server others and guide each one to YHWH and His Mashiyach, rather than build a fiefdom unto oneself. A very big difference.
Mashiyach tus that whoever wants to be "the greatest" in his Kingdom would be the servant of all. Being a "servant of all" means that a leader opens himself to be used by the Father to reach out to whomever He desires, as opposed to having a his or her own "little flock". What is Zionism?
Zionism is the political movement that is implementing the national liberation of the Jewish people. It is based on the assertion that the Jewish people, like any other people, has the right to self-determination; Jews have a right to a national home in their historic homeland. Zionism has made a reality of the "impossible" project of restoration of the Jewish people to our homeland, after nearly 2,000 years of exile. The work of Zionism is far from complete, however.
Zionism has always been a part of Judaism
The ideological and cultural foundations of Zionism have always been present in Jewish tradition. Jews always thought of themselves as a nation or people. The concept of "am Yisrael" - the "people of Israel" or "nation of Israel," has been inherent in Jewish culture from ancient times. Jewish cultural and religious life always centered around the land of Israel. This did not change during two millennia of dispersion.
History of Zionism
The modern ideological expression of Zionism began to take shape in the nineteenth century. Jews freed from the ghetto found that they could not, or did not want to, assimilate and lose their Jewishness, while at the same time, they could be part of a medieval religion whose time had passed. They came to the understanding that Jews are a people as well as a religion, and made explicit what had been implicit in Jewish culture. Various thinkers such as Moses Hess and Leon Pinsker wrote the first real Zionist ideological manifestos, and the Chovevei Tzion and BILU groups organized Zionist immigration to the land of Israel on a small scale.
Zionism becomes a political movement
Zionism became a political movement with the first Zionist congress in 1897, organized by Theodor Herzl. The conference turned an intellectual "movement," scattered around Europe, into a political force, and provided a clear goal: the achievement of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine, guaranteed by international law. Beyond this symbolic step, the conference was in reality a rather modest milestone. Without the support of the Jewish masses and rich financiers, it was hard for Zionism to show great concrete achievements. Without such achievements, it was hard for Zionism to win the support of the Jewish masses for a project that seemed hopeless and Quixotic. Tenacity, gradualism, pragmatism, courage and daring leveraged the tiny, gradually accumulated achievements of Zionism from a few people in a conference hall to a movement, from a movement in Europe to Jewish settlement in the land of Israel, from a few settlements to the British mandate, from the mandate to a Jewish state.

Definition
Replacement Theology - reduced to its simplest form - teaches that the Church has replaced Israel in God’s plan. The term “Replacement Theology” is relatively new and unfamiliar to many people (in some cases, even those who believe in it). Among theologians, the older and more widely used term is “supersessionism.” The Church “supersedes” Israel. Its proponents teach that God has set aside Israel and made the Church “new Israel,” the new and improved people of God. There are many variations within the broad spectrum of Replacement Theology, but two of the main approaches are these:
1. Israel’s role as the people of God was completed (economic supersessionism). This is the kinder and gentler way of stating the basic thesis of Replacement Theology. It says that once the Messiah came 2,000 years ago, Israel’s mission was completed. A transition occurred at that point, and the Church took over as the people of God and became the focal point for the outworking of God’s plan and purpose in redemption. God is no longer working administratively through ethnic Israel.
2. Israel’s place as the people of God was forfeited (punitive supersessionism). Other Replacement theologians are more straightforward and actually say that the supposed replacement of Israel was a divine judgment on the nation for its rejection of the Messiah in the first century. Elements of Replacement Theology can be traced as far back as Marcion (A.D. 160), who carried on a theological crusade to purge the Church of what he perceived to be dangerous Jewish errors and influences. Later, many of these same anti-Judaic sentiments found their way into the thinking (and writings) of the Early Church fathers. Irenaeus (c. 180), for instance, wrote, “The Jews have rejected the Son of God and cast Him out of the vineyard when they slew Him. Therefore, God has justly rejected them and has given to the Gentiles outside the vineyard the fruits of its cultivation” (The Ante-Nicene Fathers, Ed. Alexander Roberts and James Donaldson, [1885-1887], Volume 1, p. 493).
Over time, statements like these became the basis for full-blown anti-Semitism in some sectors of Christianity. Anything Jewish was renounced as an attempt to subvert and “Judaize” the Church. Teachings like chiliasm (millenarianism), for instance, were denounced as “Jewish fables.” The Early Church, which was clearly and undeniably Jewish, was described as “primitive,” unenlightened, and beset by erroneous notions that were carry-overs from ancient Judaism.

If anti-Semitism were only an individual psychological phenomenon, it would be similar to other forms of discrimination and hostility; however, in the modern world anti-Semitism takes on a different hue. Various groups have used it for political purposes. We can trace clear attempts to use psychological hostility – which, it seems, has deep religious roots – to forward political aims. Thus, modern anti-Semitism was born, and acquired a more and more tragic and satanic form. The widespread use of this technique began in Czarist Russia, in the struggle to smother those revolutionary attempts that finally toppled the Czarist rule. Through the Czarist secret police, the rulers attempted to identify revolutionary action with the activities of the Jews. The rulers of Czarist Russia fought against certain phenomena, and in this fight they created a kind of equation, which was supposed to prove their claims. The Czarist secret police created one of the documents that became an anti-Semitic classic, "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion." This book reveals the so-called secret plan weaved by the leaders of the Jews, to take over the entire world. "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" became a holy book among the anti-Semites.
"The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" was simply a rewriting of a French book that attributed ambitions to take over the world to Napoleon. This booklet is called "a dialogue in hell between Machiavelli and Montasque," or "Politics of the Nineteenth Century." These accusations were not at all directed towards the Jews and Judaism. However, the dialogue was adopted and transformed into the protocols of an imaginary group whose members were the world leaders of Judaism, attempting to take over the politics of various European countries.
Even the Czar himself, Nikolai the Second, although far from bearing the Jews any fond feelings, saw that the book was a fake and opposed its publication. Despite this, the first Russian edition appeared in 1905. A number of years later, other editions began to appear. Some of the editions were altered and corrected in order to make it possible to accuse the Jews of various catastrophes that took place between one edition and another. At various opportunities, it became the topic of public court cases, in which the book was proved to be a forgery. However, this of course did not check the book's growing popularity, particularly in the wake of the Nazi influence. says the Solicitor-General has ruled out the offshore processing of
asylum seekers in Papua New Guinea and Nauru as a result of the High
Court decision last week.
He has told the ABC's Insiders program that he will release the Solicitor-General's report later today.
"What that advice tells us is that not only is the Government's declaration
of Malaysia invalid, obviously under the High Court decision, but also
minister (Philip) Ruddock's declarations of Nauru and PNG should also
held to be invalid," Mr Bowen said.
"And that the Solicitor-General and two other senior counsel can have no confidence
that an arrangement with PNG or Nauru is possible under existing law as a
result of this judgment.''
Mr Bowen said the report would shape the Government's future decision making.
"Frankly, it should also inform Mr Abbott's decision because he has incorrectly
stated that there's no implication for Nauru under this judgment and that it simply untrue."<u>

obtain sex, and charging for miracles could soon be banned by an Indian
state seeking to stop charlatans preying on the vulnerable.
Many superstitions are widely held in India but a campaign group
is lobbying hard for a new law in the western state of Maharashtra to
outlaw several exploitative activities, with penalties of fines or up
to seven years in jail.
But the push to pass the
Maharashtra Prevention
and Eradication of Human Sacrifice
and Other Inhuman, Evil Practices
and Black Magic Bill
has not received unanimous support.
Some Hindu nationalists fear the legislation seeks to move beyond the
excesses named in its title and might be used to curb cherished religious freedoms.
One right-wing association, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, called it
"a draconian law targeting faith",
denounced its proponents as "atheists" and called for supporters to
lobby assembly members to oppose it and demand amendments.

Eradication Committee, which has been calling for a law for the last
two decades, is undeterred and hopes other states will follow suit.

The draft law, supported by Maharashtra's ruling Congress-National Congress Party
coalition, aims to target "quacks and conmen" who exploit widely-held
superstitions and the ignorant, particularly in rural areas.
In May this year, police said they had foiled an alleged attempt
to abduct and kill a seven-year-old girl in a village near Nashik,
northwest of Mumbai, as part of a ritual to find hidden treasure.
And last year, a childless couple in a remote village some 675km east of Mumbai
were arrested for allegedly killing five young boys because a religious
mystic told them it would help the woman to conceive.
Practices to be banned by the proposed law include beating a person to exorcise
ghosts or making money by claiming to work miracles.
Treating a dog, snake or scorpion bite with chants instead of medicine, and
seeking sexual favours by claiming to be an incarnation of a holy spirit or
the client's wife or husband in a past life would also be proscribed.
Some critics, however, say the draft law does not go far enough and
has been watered down since it was first mooted way back in 1995
due to protests from pro-Hindu groups.
"In my opinion the bill that has ultimately come into Maharashtra suggests nothing
new. It doesn't give anything additional," said Sanal Edamaruku, president of
the Indian Rationalist Association.
Concerns about the draft law's impact on legitimate religious practices from Hindu
nationalist groups such as the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have delayed its passing.
They say it could be used to prevent common Hindu rites like the "havan" ritual,
in which a consecrated fire is lit in the home to chase away evil spirits.
Dabholkar rejects the charge that the bill is anti-religion.
"In the whole of the bill, there's not a single word about God or religion.
Nothing like that. The Indian constitution allows freedom of worship and
nobody can take that away," he said.
"This is about fraudulent and exploitative practices."

Families are being forced to move out as

The family had fled Afghanistan through Iran five years
ago and built a new life in Sydney. Asieh had finished school at St
Marys and done well. She was studying for a medical science exam when,
about 10 o'clock on June 30, the gunshots broke the night.
It wasn't the first time.
Shots had been fired in Price Street, Merrylands, in May. When the Herald
visited this week, a ''for rent'' sign was on the wooden fence at the
front of Asieh's house. Furniture was on the lawn awaiting removal.
Asieh wouldn't be photographed, nor did she want her full name published.
''You don't expect it to happen in a country like this,'' she said.
Next door, her neighbour, a short woman aged 68 with a worn and friendly face, was watering her olive trees.
She wouldn't be named or photographed either. She seemed resigned to violence in the street.
''I've been here 50 years, I raised my boys here, I'm close to my church, I don't want to go. I don't know what to do.''
She pointed across the road to a new two-storey home.
''Look there, a nice family, two kids, they just built their house and they want to sell it, but no one will buy.''
At night she rolls steel shutters over her front windows.
''I know the bullets can come through but it feels better.''
She is looking forward to summer, when it stays light longer.
People on Price Street are reluctant to use names, but
they know why their street is being shot up. Their neighbour is Wahiba
Ibrahim, the matriarch of the Ibrahim family, which has been the target
in a series of shootings across Sydney over the past 15 months.
The Ryde home of her daughter, Armani Stelio, was
peppered in a drive-by attack in November and two months later there
was a shooting outside Wahiba Ibrahim's Merrylands home.
The shootings followed a series of tattoo parlour
attacks, drive-by shootings and brawls that were believed to be related
to a feud between the gang Notorious, which is associated with the
Ibrahim family, and the Comanchero Motorcycle Club. But police believe
some of the recent drive-by shootings were carried out by members of the
Hells Angels.
Asieh and her parents don't care who is pulling the trigger.
Ten minutes away at Greenacre a mower roars at the back
of a fibro house while a tired-looking woman wearing an apron and
holding a Barbie doll politely but firmly asks to be left alone.
Last Monday night about a dozen shots were fired back
and forth between a pair of cars out the front.
A police media release described the two bullets that slammed into the family home as ''stray''. Little comfort.
Across the road, two doors down live another couple. She is 89, he is 91. They are happy to talk, but will not be named.
They were in their living room when the gunfire started.
''I thought it was firecrackers, but he said it was
guns,'' she says, pointing to her husband, who was about to head off to
the shops. Police have since arrested three people.
Drive-by shootings were not a part of Sydney's crime
culture until the late 1990s, says the former assistant NSW police
commissioner Clive Small.
He says they are a tactic often used by Middle Eastern
crime gangs, whose members often come from cultures where gun ownership
and use is far more common than in Australia.
There were 60 drive-by shootings in Sydney last year, and
70 in 2009. But some local government areas have been suffering
disproportionately.
Since 2007 there have been 29 in Bankstown, 43 in Fairfield and 24 in Auburn.
Each time a thug in a car opens fire they not only
spread fear through a community, they put innocent lives at risk, Small
says.
Bob Knight, 66, was driving his truck past a KFC car park
on Milperra Road when a shootout erupted between rival gangs in June
2009.
He was hit in the head by a ''stray'' bullet and died in his truck cabin.
Arrests tend to slow the number of shootings, Small says, but gangs fill vacuums and the shooting soon breaks out again.
He believes public gun play is a sign of an immature criminal.
''Sadly, it is only going to go away when they get more professional at their business.''

CHANTING to cure snakebites, claiming to be a reincarnated spouse to
obtain sex, and charging for miracles could soon be banned by an Indian
state seeking to stop charlatans preying on the vulnerable.
Many superstitions are widely held in India but a campaign group
is lobbying hard for a new law in the western state of Maharashtra to
outlaw several exploitative activities, with penalties of fines or up
to seven years in jail.
But the push to pass the
Maharashtra Prevention
and Eradication of Human Sacrifice
and Other Inhuman, Evil Practices
and Black Magic Bill
has not received unanimous support.
Some Hindu nationalists fear the legislation seeks to move beyond the
excesses named in its title and might be used to curb cherished religious freedoms.
One right-wing association, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, called it
"a draconian law targeting faith",
denounced its proponents as "atheists" and called for supporters to
lobby assembly members to oppose it and demand amendments.

Eradication Committee, which has been calling for a law for the last
two decades, is undeterred and hopes other states will follow suit.
"Superstitions are rampant all over India but at the moment there is
no law which stops this type of activity," Narendra Dabholkar said.
"There are laws against witchcraft but they're limited to a particular type of
witchcraft. This is much wider and more encompassing."
The draft law, supported by Maharashtra's ruling Congress-National Congress Party
coalition, aims to target "quacks and conmen" who exploit widely-held
superstitions and the ignorant, particularly in rural areas.
In May this year, police said they had foiled an alleged attempt
to abduct and kill a seven-year-old girl in a village near Nashik,
northwest of Mumbai, as part of a ritual to find hidden treasure.
And last year, a childless couple in a remote village some 675km east of Mumbai
were arrested for allegedly killing five young boys because a religious
mystic told them it would help the woman to conceive.
Practices to be banned by the proposed law include beating a person to exorcise
ghosts or making money by claiming to work miracles.
Treating a dog, snake or scorpion bite with chants instead of medicine, and
seeking sexual favours by claiming to be an incarnation of a holy spirit or
the client's wife or husband in a past life would also be proscribed.
Some critics, however, say the draft law does not go far enough and
has been watered down since it was first mooted way back in 1995
due to protests from pro-Hindu groups.
"In my opinion the bill that has ultimately come into Maharashtra suggests nothing
new. It doesn't give anything additional," said Sanal Edamaruku, president of
the Indian Rationalist Association.
Concerns about the draft law's impact on legitimate religious practices from Hindu
nationalist groups such as the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have delayed its passing.
They say it could be used to prevent common Hindu rites like the "havan" ritual,
in which a consecrated fire is lit in the home to chase away evil spirits.
Dabholkar rejects the charge that the bill is anti-religion.
"In the whole of the bill, there's not a single word about God or religion.
Nothing like that. The Indian constitution allows freedom of worship and
nobody can take that away," he said.
"This is about fraudulent and exploitative practices."
For Edamaruku, whose organisation seeks to debunk superstition and promote
scientific reasoning, a new India-wide law against charlatans is vital to build on
the great strides made by the country in recent years.
Continued belief in superstitions and black magic "will hinder India's
development," he said. "A countrywide law is needed.

IMMIGRATION Minister Chris Bowen
says the Solicitor-General has ruled out the offshore processing of
asylum seekers in Papua New Guinea and Nauru as a result of the High
Court decision last week.
He has told the ABC's Insiders program that he will release the Solicitor-General's report later today.
"What that advice tells us is that not only is the Government's declaration
of Malaysia invalid, obviously under the High Court decision, but also
minister (Philip) Ruddock's declarations of Nauru and PNG should also
held to be invalid," Mr Bowen said.
"And that the Solicitor-General and two other senior counsel can have no confidence
that an arrangement with PNG or Nauru is possible under existing law as a
result of this judgment.''
Mr Bowen said the report would shape the Government's future decision making.
"Frankly, it should also inform Mr Abbott's decision because he has incorrectly
stated that there's no implication for Nauru under this judgment and that it simply untrue."<u>

"Clearly the High Court has interpreted the Migration Act in this way and it
would be open to the Parliament to change the Migration Act to deal with
how the HIgh Court has interpreted it and that's one of the options
that would be available.
"Quite
clearly under all the legal advice, if Mr Abbott wanted to go down the
Nauru option he would need legislative change. He would need it on
several bases.
"And what is very clear from the High Court judgment is you could not send
unaccompanied minors in any workable way to Nauru or anywhere else.
That's a significant change."

The rise of
Middle Eastern crime
in Australia
Former NSW detective Tim Priest was one of the front-line cops
who lead the war against crime in the drug-ridden streets of Cabramatta.
Yet he found himself waging his biggest battle not against the drug gangs
but against the very organisation he worked for.
Eventually, he could stand it no longer and spoke out
about the politics and bureaucratic bungling,
chronic lack of resources and crazy policy decisions
that seem endemic to the New South Wales Police Service.
For this, he was labelled a 'whistleblower' and ultimately

THE Gillard government faces a choice between doing a
deal with Tony Abbott to bring back the Pacific solution or bowing to
the demands of its stirring Left faction and scrapping the overseas
processing of asylum seekers altogether.
The stark contrast emerged yesterday after the government released its
written legal advice, which says last week's High Court decision that
ruled the Malaysia plan invalid also rules out the Pacific solution
locations of Nauru and Manus Island.
Claiming the government was looking for an excuse to abandon offshore
processing, Mr Abbott offered to help pass legislation amending the
Migration Act to circumvent the High Court ruling and allow processing
on Manus Island and Nauru.
The government is torn over what to do and cabinet will discuss options
today. One option is understood to opt for the Pacific solution but with
elements to try to placate the Left, such as an increased annual
refugee intake.
The developments came as the Herald obtained a memo sent to staff
by the secretary of the Department of Immigration, Andrew Metcalf, the
day after the High Court decision.
The three-page memo suggests the Malaysia plan would have been more
effective than the Pacific solution in stopping the people smugglers
because it would have sent people back to the point of departure.
Mr Metcalf said one of the theories underpinning the Malaysia plan was
''the dramatic effect of past polices involving the very quick removal
of people from Australia''. He cited the Labor government's forced
repatriation of ethnic Chinese and Vietnamese groups in 1994, of Chinese
nationals in the mid-1990s, and the Howard government towing several
boatloads of people back to Indonesian waters.
''It is indisputable that these actions sent a clear message to people
smugglers that they could not guarantee what they are selling - arrival
and processing of claims in Australia.''
The High Court decision raised doubts about Julia Gillard's leadership.
But her senior ministers continued to defend her yesterday and the NSW
Labor headquarters in Sussex St was warning there was no appetite among
the rank and file for another change, warning it would be ''political
suicide''.
The government's legal advice, by the Commonwealth Solicitor-General,
Stephen Gageler, was released by the Immigration Minister, Chris Bowen.
''We do not have reasonable confidence on the material with which we
have been briefed that the power conferred by [section 198A of the
Migration Act] could currently be exercised to take asylum seekers from
Australia to either Nauru or PNG,'' the advice says.
Mr Abbott, after consulting the shadow attorney-general, George
Brandis, disputed the assertion, saying Nauru had signed the United
Nations convention on refugees and was amending its laws to ensure they
were compliant with the High Court verdict.
He said the government was trying to use the High Court decision as an
excuse to avoid an internal split by abandoning offshore processing
which, he said, would be pandering to the Greens and the Left.
''If the government wants to put offshore processing beyond legal doubt
by amending the Migration Act, the Coalition's prepared to work with
the government to bring that about,'' Mr Abbott said.
''We don't want the government to use the High Court's decision as an excuse to drop offshore processing.''
Mr Bowen conceded changing the Migration Act was an option but he
cautioned Nauru would not break the people smugglers because it was just
another offshore processing location, like Christmas Island. ''It just
means that people get processed and the majority get settled in
Australia. It doesn't break the model.''
He also cautioned that the High Court ruling made it unworkable to send
unaccompanied minors to Nauru or Manus Island, which is Coalition
policy, and suggested that could not be simply fixed with legislation.
''This is a matter I think everybody needs to reflect on,'' Mr Bowen
said.
One government source said even if it cut a deal with Mr Abbott, he
would then wedge Labor further by demanding it reintroduce temporary
protection visas.
The ALP Left is warning of internal warfare

One thing was made clear in the rapid public response to The
Courier’s campaign to "Think Big" about the Eureka Stadium upgrade:
Ballarat is a passionate football town.While some worried that the
project might ignore grass roots football and grounds and others worried
that Eureka might not draw the crowds, the majority were quick to throw
their support behind an idea that has enormous potential for the city.
Dozens of comments came flooding in to The Courier’s website on the first day
of the campaign, with a majority seeing the potential of the broader
vision.
Comments ranged from the simply enthusiastic to those who had already seen the
financial benefits AFL games have brought to other cities like Launceston and Darwin.
But The Courier wants to reiterate that the campaign to develop Eureka into
a sports and major events precinct is about a lot more than football.
It is about developing an educational hub for sports science and a place where
grassroots football has access to the best facilities.
Meanwhile, Ballarat was again in the AFL spotlight yesterday at the fourth
annual Eureka Game at Etihad Stadium, while debate raged online about the
push to host AFL games in the city.
While Richmond and North Melbourne went to battle in the Ballarat-themed match,
the campaign to upgrade Eureka Stadium was the hot topic on The Courier website.
The Eureka Game is the brainchild of AFL legend Kevin Sheedy, who proposed
the match in 2008 to further educate football followers on how the Eureka Rebellion
shaped Australian democracy.
The “Think big Ballarat” Eureka Stadium campaign polarised opinion
over the weekend, with more than 25 comments posted online.
The campaign, launched by The Courier on Saturday, is urging the community
to push for a massive upgrade of Eureka Stadium to host AFL home and
away matches. Ballarat City Council has already committed to the upgrade
and has conducted a pre-feasibility study but significant funding is still required
for the project to get off the ground.
The Labor state government promised $30 million for the project last year,
but lost the election.
Opinions were divided over the weekend, however the majority of readers
were in support of the upgrade campaign.

in its bid to host AFL games.
It has received a $921,000 Sport and Recreation Victoria grant
to boost both its new Centre of Excellence and its community facilities.
North Ballarat Sports Club chief executive officer Mark Patterson
said the improvements would hopefully be a "stepping stone"
to attracting AFL games.
The Centre of Excellence will be developed within the current stadium
and will be used mainly by TAC Cup and VFL players.

STUDENTS who pay $7800 can secure direct entry into all of the
University of Adelaide's bachelor degrees based on their Year 11
results.
Students who complete the university's Foundation Studies Program,
dubbed "uni without Year 12", offered through Eynesbury College,
receive assured direct entry into all of its bachelor degrees.
Parent and student groups have questioned the program's fairness,
criticising a system they say effectively allows students to buy their way
into university.
Entry into the program requires only successful completion of Year 11.
The flyer promoting the program states: "Students offered a place in the
FSP will no longer have to compete with thousands of others as they are
given a conditional offer of admission to their preferred Bachelor
degree at the University. This means no SACE and no SATAC application."

Most South Australian Year 12 students who apply for university
must complete their SA Certificate of Education and receive an
Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank that provides a comparison to
students who have completed different subject combinations.
Using their ATAR, students apply for a place in their preferred undergraduate
course through the SA Tertiary Admissions Centre, competing for a place
based on merit.
Eynesbury College (International) director and principal Peter Millen said that upon application, students would be assessed on their ability to successfully complete
the program, which would include the prerequisite subjects the student needed
depending on their chosen degree.
Mr Millen said successful applicants would receive an offer from
the University of Adelaide that would specify a mark out of 500
they must achieve to maintain their place.
"It's a completely separate program, they are scored out of 500 so,
if for example engineering was 380, they would have to complete the program,
get 380 and have the right prerequisites," he said.
The university sets the score on a degree-by-degree basis with
"similar relativities" as ATAR scores, a spokeswoman said, however,
she was not able to provide examples.
University of Adelaide major projects and development director Lynne Broadbridge
said offering the foundation program for domestic students was about the need to
have flexible pathways and reduce the traditional barriers to university.
"Opening our foundation program offered through Eynesbury College,
which has proven successful for international students since 1994, is
a logical step to encourage local students to follow the aspirations to
higher education," she said.
SA Association of School Parent Clubs president Jenice Zerna said
it was not fair that some students would effectively be able to pay
for their university place.
"We are concerned that students are being provided with a university place
based on how much money they or their parents have," she said.
National Union of Students president Jesse Marshall said the program appeared to
be a way to get a down payment from students from wealthy backgrounds in return
for guaranteed access to its programs.
"The Federal Government levelled the playing field
when it abolished full-fee paying places," he said.
"This program appears to take us back to the days where
if you have more money you can pay your way into university."

Introduction
In March 2009 Tim Willing and I reported the existence of a sizeable
painting of a large striped animal, discovered near the western shore of
the Admiralty Gulf in the north-west Kimberley region of Western
Australia, that we believed represented the extinct Marsupial Lion Thylacoleo carnifex
(Akerman & Willing 2009). Subsequently, Don MacLeod, a friend
resident in the remote northern Kimberley (Figure 1), forwarded an image
of a painting that seems to depict a hunter in the act of spearing, or
fending off, a striped animal somewhat larger than himself. MacLeod had
originally been shown the painting by Mr Ray Lanaghan, who works
seasonally in the Kimberley.

Located on an isolated pinnacle on the lower reaches of the Drysdale
River, the art work consists of a human engaging with an animal
(Figure 2). A second human figure, seen isolated to the lower left of the
animal, may possibly be part of the entire composition, but will not be
discussed further in this paper. The new painting, unlike the 1830mm
long Thylacoleo painting described by Akerman and Willing (2009),
is exceptionally small: the entire composition is only c.500mm
across. As the original set of images sent to me was of reasonably high
resolution I was able to create a faithful black and white image of the
hunter/animal combination (Figure 3) and offer the following reading of
the image:
Figure 3 shows a large, striped animal with a long tail and
massive forequarters. The position of the penis, shown beneath the tail
indicates that a male marsupial rather than a placental animal, such as a
dog, is being depicted. To the right of the chest of the animal is a
human figure which appears to be spearing, or fending off, the animal by
means of a long spear with many, uniserially arranged barbs. The image
is thought to have been made in a single event, with an economy of
action. Using a brush charged with a relatively dry load of pigment, the
artist has painted the spearshaft and barbs, and the arms of the hunter
with a series of single strokes; the tail and stripes on the animal are
similarly executed. The head and thoracic region of the animal and rear
and forelimbs are filled in using numerous strokes, as are the head,
body and legs of the hunter.

The hunter grasps the spear with both hands as if to either stab the
animal or fend off an attack. Multibarbed spears are common in the early
phases of the rock art of the region but are not present in the more
recent rock art (Walsh & Morwood 1999). Barbed spears of any type
were not used in northern Kimberley in the early historic period. The
usual spear form was one with a composite reed and hardwood shaft tipped
with a bifacially pressure-flaked, serrated edged stone point - the
so-called 'Kimberley Point' (Akerman & Bindon 1996; Akerman 2006).
That the picture is of some antiquity is further reinforced by the fact
that the hunter is using the spear without a spearthrower. As Walsh and
Morwood place the appearance of the spearthrower in rock art at about
the Clothes Peg Figure (CPF) Period (1999: 49-50), it is possible that
the Drysdale painting belongs to an even earlier phase of the rock art
of the region. Although simply depicted, the human figure appears either
to wear a simple conical headdress, or perhaps the hair bound into a
chignon.
In 1996 Welch addressed the issue of simple human figures in the rock
art of the Kimberley, finding that they appear virtually throughout the
entire sequence of art from the earliest to most recent (Welch 1996:
73). Commenting at my request on the Drysdale River image, Welch noted: 'I
would describe it as a "simple figure painted at the time of the
Tasselled Figures" or you might say a "simple figure from the Bradshaw
Period"' (Welch pers. comm. 25 June 2009).
There is a tendency, in much of the rock art of northern Australia in
compositions showing humans and animals interacting, to depict the
faunal component of the composition as significantly larger than the
human element (Welch 2004: 47-56), Welch suggests that the disparity in
size between human and animal may reflect any of a number of possible
scenarios that reflect the possible mythic or ceremonial significance of
the primary image, its importance as a food source, or an attempt by
the artist to indicate perspective (Welch 2004: 55).
I consider that the Drysdale River composition clearly shows either a
hunter attacking or defending himself from an animal. There is no
separation between human and animal in the picture - they are intimately
linked via the spear. It may be that the animal is, or rather was,
larger than the human and the scene depicts an actual event.
In some of the early rock art previously considered to represent
hunting or fighting scenes spears are either carried in one hand, or
appear to be lying behind or lodged in the victim and separate from the
spear thrower (see Donaldson 2007: 21, Figure 1.44). This suggests that
spears were not thrust but thrown at their targets. While it is possible
that the hunter is depicted attacking the animal, the two-handed grasp
with which he holds the spear, and the apparent buckling of the spear as
it makes contact with the animal's chest, suggests that he is in fact
defending himself from an attack.
What of the animal itself? Recent practice has considered all large
striped, quadrupedal animal forms depicted in ancient rock art to be the
so-called Tasmanian tiger or thylacine (Thylacinus cynocephalus),
a medium to large, dog-like marsupial, with striped hindquarters. There
is evidence however, that humans in the Kimberley were familiar with
the now extinct marsupial lion Thylacoleo carnifex (Akerman & Willing 2009).
There is also a matter of comparative size. Thylacoleo carnifex
is estimated to weigh between 130 and 160kg, while a large thylacine
had a maximum weight of about 45kg (Wroe 1999: 60-1, 2000: 49).
Faced with newly discovered rock art images a reconsideration of the
identity of the animals depicted in the rock art of the region may be
apposite: some, previously presumed to be thylacines, may have to be
re-assessed. A copy of the image was sent to palaeontologists Rod Wells
and John Long, who both informed me that the animal appeared to be more
likely to represent a thylacoleo than a thylacine. Steve Webb, an
archaeologist familiar with Australia's ancient megafauna, provided a
similar opinion.

On isolating the Drysdale River animal from the composition and
focusing on it in isolation (Figures 4 & 5) we see an animal with a
relatively long body and long tail with deep chest and quite massive
forelimb and front paw. The head is small in relation to the rest of the
animal. As noted earlier it is a male and is striped across the rear
half of the body. It is possible that the animal depicted is a thylacine
- albeit a very robust one. In my own view, however, a thylacoleo or
Marsupial Lion is represented here (for relevant aspects of the anatomy
of this animal see Akerman & Willing 2009).
If this is the case we have here a second picture of this unusual
element of the now extinct suite of Australian megafauna. Regardless of
species, it is the only example of Australian rock art that I am aware
of in which humans and extinct marsupials are shown unmistakably
interacting.
There has been much debate about the role played by the ancestors of
the Australian Aboriginals in the extinction of the Australian
megafauna. Important papers on this debate in the last decade include
those by Roberts et al. (2001), Wroe and Fields (2001), and
Gillespie (2004). The argument seems to rest on whether there is any
real evidence for the late survival of megafauna. One also needs to be
reminded of the definition of megafauna provided by Roberts et al.
(2001: 1888): 'Twenty-three of the 24 genera of Australian land animals
weighing more than 45kg (which, along with a few smaller species
constituted the "megafauna") were extinct by the late Quaternary' (my
emphasis).
While Aboriginal people were possibly not killing the big end of the
megafaunal spectrum it must be remembered that prior to the introduction
of metal, Australian Aborigines were successfully taking the larger
kangaroos (Red Kangaroos may weigh up to 90kg, Grey Kangaroos up to 70kg
and Antelopine Kangaroos up to 49 kg) as well as the marine dwelling
dugong (420 kg) with spears and harpoons with wooden points.
If, as Roberts et al. (2001) and Gillespie (2004) suggest, the
Australian megafauna was wiped out by 45000-46000 years ago then we
should consider the possibility that the painting may be of similar
antiquity. My own view, however, is that it is more likely to belong in
the more recent, but as yet undated, early Bradshaw (or Gwion Gwion)
phase of early Australian Aboriginal rock art. The only date (17500±1800
years BP) available at present for the early art of the Kimberley was
obtained using OSL dating of mud-wasp nests overlaying a painting '
...which looks archaic, and may be related to the Bradshaw style'
(Roberts et al 1997: 697). It is more likely that the age of the Drysdale River
composition would fall between 15000 and 22000 years ago (or about the
time of the last glacial Maximum) rather than the much older 46000 years
suggested for megafaunal extinction. In this case it may be that some
megafauna did hang on in wetter areas of the continent until more recent
times as suggested by Wells (1985: 228 for Thylacoleo carnifex)
and Wroe, Field and Fullagar (2002: 60-1).
If such a carnivore as thylacoleo was still present in the landscape
at this period it suggests that megafaunal prey species were also present.
Attention is drawn to the painting found in a shelter at Deaf Adder Creek
in western Arnhem Land, identified as a marsupial tapir (Palorchestes azeal) and
described by Chaloupka (1993: 100). Following this line of argument even further,
it may be that, as natural prey species declined, thylacoleos turned to humans
as a source of food - and the Drysdale River composition reflects such an encounter.
Conclusion
The Drysdale River painting may be the first direct evidence of an
interaction between a human and a now-extinct animal in ancient
Australia. The scene can be interpreted as a hunting scene but it is
equally possible that it shows a human defending himself from an
attacking animal. While it is possible that the painting depicts a
thylacine, the likelihood that it represents a thylacoleo must be
seriously considered. If so, this would be the second picture found in
the early rock art of the Kimberley showing this animal and it may be
that more such images await discovery or identification.

Introduction
In March 2009 Tim Willing and I reported the existence of a sizeable
painting of a large striped animal, discovered near the western shore of
the Admiralty Gulf in the north-west Kimberley region of Western
Australia, that we believed represented the extinct Marsupial Lion Thylacoleo carnifex
(Akerman & Willing 2009). Subsequently, Don MacLeod, a friend
resident in the remote northern Kimberley (Figure 1), forwarded an image
of a painting that seems to depict a hunter in the act of spearing, or
fending off, a striped animal somewhat larger than himself. MacLeod had
originally been shown the painting by Mr Ray Lanaghan, who works
seasonally in the Kimberley.
The Drysdale River image
Located on an isolated pinnacle on the lower reaches of the Drysdale
River, the art work consists of a human engaging with an animal
(Figure 2). A second human figure, seen isolated to the lower left of the
animal, may possibly be part of the entire composition, but will not be
discussed further in this paper. The new painting, unlike the 1830mm
long Thylacoleo painting described by Akerman and Willing (2009),
is exceptionally small: the entire composition is only c.500mm

World’s oldest ground-edge implement
discovered in northern Australia

The oldest ground-edge stone tool in the world has been discovered in
Northern Australia by a Monash University researcher and a team of
international experts.
Evidence for stone tool-use among our earliest hominid ancestors
dates to 3.4 million years ago, however, the first use of grinding to
sharpen stone tool edges such as axes is clearly associated with modern
humans, otherwise known as Homo sapiens sapiens.
Monash University archaeologist and member of the team who made the
discovery, Dr Bruno David said while there have been reports of much
older axes being found in New Guinea, the implements were not ground.
“This suggests that axe technology evolved into the later use of
grinding for the sharper, more symmetrical and maintainable edges this
generates,” said Dr David.
“The ground-axe fragment is dated to 35,000 years ago, which
pre-dates the oldest examples of ground-edge implements dated to
22,000-30,000 years ago from Japan and Northern Australia.”
Archaeological excavations undertaken in May 2010 at Nawarla Gabarnmang
in Northern Australia uncovered the artefact.
Nawarla Gabarnmang is a large rockshelter in Jawoyn Aboriginal
country in southwestern Arnhem Land. The discovery of the rockshelter
was made by Ray Whear and Chris Morgan from the Jawoyn Association while
flying by helicopter on 15 June 2006.
The discovery of the axe was made by a team of researchers including
Jean-Michel Geneste from the Centre National de Prehistoire of the
Ministry of Culture in France, Hugues Plisson from the Centre National
de la Recherche Scientifique at the University of Bordeaux in France,
Christopher Clarkson from the University of Queensland, Jean-Jacques
Delannoy from the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique at the
University de Savoie in France and Fiona Petchey from the University of
Waikato in New Zealand.
“Axes fulfilled a unique position within the Aboriginal toolkit as
long use-life chopping tools, were labour intensive to manufacture and
highly valued,” said Dr David.
“During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, axes were understood
by local Aboriginal communities to carry with them the ancestral forces
which characterised the particular quarry from which they came,”
“Their trade across the landscape moved not just the tool itself, but
more importantly the symbolic and ancestral forces of their point of
origin. The Nawarla Gabarnmang axe, found some 40km from its source, is
evidence of 35,000 years of the movement of tools, technologies and
ideas across the northern Australian landscape,”
“This new evidence for the earliest securely dated ground-edge
implement in the world indicates that Australia was an important locale
of technological innovation 35,000 years ago.”
“This discovery will assist researchers in Australia and around the
world as we examine the evolution of human behaviour and the earliest
technological advancements,” said Dr David.
The find is reported in the December issue of Australian Archaeology,
the official journal of the Australian Archaeological Association Inc.
The project was funded by the Federal Government’s Indigenous Heritage
Program administered by the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage
and the Arts.

SHORTAGE OF ARCHAEOLOGISTS
FOR AUSTRALIAN JOB MARKET

has argued in the Weekend Australian of July 4-5,
that there is a global shortage of archaeologists.
Specifically, he notes that a rebound in the resources
sector will create additional demand for appropriately qualified and
experienced heritage consultants.
The Australian National Committee for Archaeology Teaching and Learning
has established a Register of consultants willing to give undergraduates
work experience (see this AAA home website).
The Rudd Government's infrastructure initiatives raise
the spectre of rapidly increasing volumes of land use and permit
applications - of which archaeological/heritage compliances are an
integral component.

Exploding star recorded in Aboriginal Dreamtime

Aboriginal Australians recorded an eruption of a bright star
150 years ago and wove it into their Dreamtime stories.

LONG BEFORE THE WORD astronomy was even coined,
Aboriginal Australians were gazing into the night sky
and documenting its events,
weaving them into their Dreamtime stories.
Australian researchers have recently discovered that the eruption of a huge star
150 years ago was recorded and incorporated into the traditions of an
Australian Aboriginal community living near Lake Tyrell in north-western
Victoria.
"This event is a prime example that Aboriginal Australians were astute observers of
the night sky," says Duane Hamacher, a PhD candidate studying Aboriginal astronomy
at Macquarie University in Sydney.
In the late 1830s, the larger of the twin stars of Eta Carinae in
the constellation Carina, about 8,000 light-years away from Earth,
began a two-decade outburst that ejected hot gas with a mass nearly 20 times
as much as the Sun. "At its peak it was the second brightest star in the night sky,
after Sirius," says Dr David Frew, an astronomer at Macquarie University.
After the outburst, the star's brightness faded until recent decades.

Connecting the dots
The Boorong people of Lake Tyrell appear to have woven the event into their
oral traditions as the character 'Collowgullouric War', the wife of the
crow called 'War' (pronounced "Waa"), who is identified as the star
Canopus. War was described as the first being to bring fire from above
and give it to the Aboriginal people.
Prior to the supernova-like
outburst of the star, it is unclear which star may have been attributed
to War's wife, Duane says. In the Boorong legends, husband and wives
were often represented by stars of equal brightness.
This astronomical knowledge was told to Victorian pastoralist and
philanthropist, William Stanbridge, who presented the first paper on
Aboriginal astronomy to the Philosophical Society of Victoria in 1857.
William Stanbridge himself was unaware of the link between the oral
tradition and the star's eruption, says Duane, and it took 150 years for
someone to finally make the connection.
Duane and David have published their findings in the November issue of the Journal of Astronomical History & Heritage.
Amateur historian John Morieson has worked in Victorian Aboriginal communities
for many years, and wrote an unpublished thesis on the Boorong people in
1996 while at Melbourne University. He says that the star was likely
known to the Boorong before it brightened with the outburst.
Evolving Dreamtime
As with many celestial events which gave rise to new Dreamtime stories,
the Carinae eruption may have led to the adaptation of the crow
legend. Duane says the fact that William Stanbridge described the star
as "bright red" is significant, as it was neither bright nor red prior
to its outburst, and could mean it wasn't noted by the Boorong before
that time. "It's a good example of how Aboriginal Dreamings are dynamic
and evolving, sometimes incorporating significant celestial events," he
says.
Aboriginal Australians understood and incorporated transient celestial phenomena
into their culture, in some cases making clear connections between meteors and
meteorites, for example, or the mechanics of the Sun-Moon-Earth system during
an eclipse, he adds.
Duane's supervisor, astronomer Ray Norris, from CSIRO Astronomy and Space
Science in Sydney, says traditional stories of eclipses, describe the
'Sun woman' and 'Moon man' making love, explaining why the light from
one is covered by the body of another. "This is exactly how we
understand it in western science but couched in a different language,"
he says.

Palaeontologists have discovered
the most extensive cache of dino footprints
in southern Australia.

EACH AROUND THE SIZE of a human handprint, several
dozen steps recorded in the sand 100 million years ago make up the
largest collection of the dinosaur footprints ever found in Victoria.
Discovered in two sandstone blocks at Melanesia Beach near Cape Otway,
this is only the fourth time dinosaur footprints have been found in the
state.
One block is of particular interest, as it contains the
first known dinosaur trackway (sequence of steps) ever found in
Victoria: three footprints made by a small carnivorous dinosaur about
105 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous period.
"This is the most significant dinosaur track discovery in Victoria," says Dr
Tom Rich, a palaeontologist at Museum Victoria in Melbourne, and
co-author of a paper detailing the find. "There are at least 24 dinosaur
tracks [here], made by a variety of dinosaurs."
Creating a good impression
"What is significant about dinosaur footprints - as opposed to dinosaur bones
or teeth - is the evidence of the presence of dinosaurs," says Tom.
"The trace fossils tell us how the dinosaurs were living in the area at the time."
"Fossil footprints in Australia are quite rare and can reveal new information
about the types of dinosaurs there were in the area," adds Dr Aaron Camens,
a marsupial trackways expert at the University of Adelaide. "Well preserved prints
can tell us what the fleshed foot of the animal looked like. They can be used to
examine how the animal walked, and trackways can even yield information about speed,
movement and behaviour."
Tom and his coworkers believe the footprints were made by ornithomimosaurs
or 'bird-mimic' dinosaurs that ranged in size from a rooster to a cassowary.
"We can estimate the speed - somewhere between 7 and 9 km/h - based on
the spacing of the tracks and the size of the tracks," says Tom. "We also can
estimate the height of the animal, probably about four times the maximum length
of the tracks."
The prints were left by animals that were likely to have
been different ages and were walking over swampy ground created as snow
melted across floodplains in the spring. At this time Victoria would
have been within the Antarctic Circle, and would have been cold and
completely dark for much of the year.
"These prints differ from others found in the region as they are made by
[carnivorous] theropod dinosaurs instead of [herbivorous] ornithopods,"
says Dr Steve Salisbury, a palaeontologist at the University of Queensland
who was not involved in the research. "It's hard to put these footprints into
context. It may be that the prints were made at a similar time, but even
that's hard to confirm, given how they were found on the beach."
Get in on the act
One of the sandstone slabs was first spotted by local landowner Greg
Denney. Professor Pat Vickers-Rich a palaeontologist at Monash University
and co-author of the paper describes Greg as "one of the world's best dino trackers."
Both Pat and Steve encourage interested members of the public to look for
these types of fossils. "Iffootprints have already been found in a certain spot,
that's always a good place to look for more," Steve says. "But in a lot of cases
it can be hard for the untrained eye to tell if a footprint is dinosaurian."
The key is to have any potential find verified but leave it undisturbed,
Steve says. "Taking photos is a great way to find out if you have
something of interest, but unless you know the law for the area you are
in, it is always best not to disturb a new find. I was just in the Kimberley,
where there are many footprints and tracksites that are very important to
the local aboriginal culture." he says. "To take any of those fossils would be
a serious offence."

Environmental campaigner Bob Irwin
says he will not contest the Brisbane seat of Ashgrove
at the next Queensland election.
The Queensland Party approached Mr Irwin to run
against Labor's Kate Jones and Liberal National Party
(LNP) leader Campbell Newman.
However, the Queensland Party is now facing deregistration
after leader Aidan McLindon defected
to federal MP Bob Katter's Australian Party.
Mr Irwin has told ABC Radio he does not like
what he has learnt about politics since the approach.
"I've decided that I've got no confidence in our political system
to protect our environment and so I've decided to use all my endeavours
to continue to be a wildlife activist," he said.
"I feel that if I had the added responsibility of being a political-type person
then I just very well may let my animal friends down."
Mr Irwin says he has concerns about Mr Katter's views on environmental issues,
and does not have confidence the political system can protect the environment.
Mr McLindon says he was not aware of Mr Irwin's concerns.
"Bob certainly hasn't explained that to me." he said.
"Obviously it would have been a factor for him to consider."
Mr McLindon says he accepts Mr Irwin's decision.
"I support his decision 100 per cent as he's seen politics
can be a pretty nasty game out there," Mr McLindon said.
"I think the reality is he's going to be very effective on the outside to keep
championing his causes and I look forward to working with him in the future."

Pacific Island kids learn to read and write.
The Pacific’s two riches countries will jointly fund the program to
tackle the problem that almost one million school-aged children across
the Pacific do not go to school.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the aim was by 2021 to have 75 per cent
of all Pacific Island children being able to read by age 10.
She said this would help improve prosperity in the Pacific.
Australia and NZ will also provide three post-graduate scholarships each.
Attending the 40th anniversary of the 16-nation Pacific Island Forum in Auckland,
Ms Gillard said the top issues were economic growth, education, jobs
and climate change.
Leaders are looking at expanding guest worker schemes and labour mobility
in the region and Ms Gillard flagged her support to find a cheaper way for
Pacific Islanders working in Australia to send money back home.

lets students pay to get into
the University of Adelaide
without passing Year 12.

STUDENTS who pay $7800 can secure direct entry into all of the
University of Adelaide's bachelor degrees based on their Year 11
results.
Students who complete the university's Foundation Studies Program,
dubbed "uni without Year 12", offered through Eynesbury College,
receive assured direct entry into all of its bachelor degrees.
Parent and student groups have questioned the program's fairness,
criticising a system they say effectively allows students to buy their way
into university.
Entry into the program requires only successful completion of Year 11.
The flyer promoting the program states: "Students offered a place in the
FSP will no longer have to compete with thousands of others as they are
given a conditional offer of admission to their preferred Bachelor
degree at the University. This means no SACE and no SATAC application."

Most South Australian Year 12 students who apply for university
must complete their SA Certificate of Education and receive an
Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank that provides a comparison to
students who have completed different subject combinations.
Using their ATAR, students apply for a place in their preferred undergraduate
course through the SA Tertiary Admissions Centre, competing for a place
based on merit.
Eynesbury College (International) director and principal Peter Millen said that upon application, students would be assessed on their ability to successfully complete
the program, which would include the prerequisite subjects the student needed
depending on their chosen degree.
Mr Millen said successful applicants would receive an offer from
the University of Adelaide that would specify a mark out of 500
they must achieve to maintain their place.
"It's a completely separate program, they are scored out of 500 so,
if for example engineering was 380, they would have to complete the program,
get 380 and have the right prerequisites," he said.
The university sets the score on a degree-by-degree basis with
"similar relativities" as ATAR scores, a spokeswoman said, however,
she was not able to provide examples.
University of Adelaide major projects and development director Lynne Broadbridge
said offering the foundation program for domestic students was about the need to
have flexible pathways and reduce the traditional barriers to university.
"Opening our foundation program offered through Eynesbury College,
which has proven successful for international students since 1994, is
a logical step to encourage local students to follow the aspirations to
higher education," she said.
SA Association of School Parent Clubs president Jenice Zerna said
it was not fair that some students would effectively be able to pay
for their university place.
"We are concerned that students are being provided with a university place
based on how much money they or their parents have," she said.
National Union of Students president Jesse Marshall said the program appeared to
be a way to get a down payment from students from wealthy backgrounds in return
for guaranteed access to its programs.
"The Federal Government levelled the playing field
when it abolished full-fee paying places," he said.
"This program appears to take us back to the days where
if you have more money you can pay your way into university."
