Alexander the Great, whose tomb has been missing for
nearly 2,000 years, could be buried in Broome in Western Australia, a
Perth man says.

Macedonian-born Tim Tutungis told ABC Kimberley that he first heard the 'Broomer' from his old mate, Lou Batalis.

"We
just got onto the subject of Alexander The Great's tomb, and he said,
'They'll never ever find it, no matter where they look, because
Alexander the Great is buried in Broome, in Western Australia'," Mr
Tutungis said.

"Approximately 50 years ago, some guy went into a
cave in Broome and he saw some inscriptions in there and they looked
like ancient Greek.

"He reported it to the government, then the government went and saw it and they confirmed there were some inscriptions there.

"They went to the Greek community and they asked the community,'Is there anyone here who can read ancient Greek?'

"Naturally
Louis Batalis put his hand up and said, 'Yes, I went to school in
Egypt, I got educated, I can read it'. So they took him up there and he
defined the inscriptions as saying, in ancient Greek, 'Alexander the
Great'.

"The government did say to him at that time, 'You didn't see this, OK, this never happened'."

History's mystery

Alexander the Great died on June 11, 323 BC, probably from malaria, alcoholism or poisoning.

One
traditionally accepted story says his body was placed in two gold
caskets in a gold carriage. Another says his body was preserved in a
clay jar filled with honey and that this was placed in a glass coffin.

Some
historians say Alexander's general and friend, Ptolemy, stole the body
and took it to Alexandria, while others say Roman Emperor Caligula
looted the tomb and stole Alexander's breastplate.

According to
some sources, Emperor Septimius Severus closed Alexander's tomb about
200 AD, and little is known of the body's whereabouts after that.

Mr
Tutungis says he is 99 per cent convinced Mr Batalis told him the
truth, because people "have looked everywhere" for Alexander's grave, to
no avail.

He says his friend is a very old man now and has virtually lost his memory, and others who heard the story had dismissed it.

But he says Mr Batalis was "a man of substance" who was very educated, and the story stuck with him.

"I
drew my own conclusion because the war of the Macedonians ended up in
India and I assumed that some of the soldiers went back to Macedonia on
foot," Mr Tutungis said.

"Some of the soldiers must have caught a
ship. Why can't we say that Alexander did catch a ship; they lost their
way in the treacherous ways up there.

"Look where India is, look where Broome is; a ship could easily get wrecked in Broome."

Mr Tutungis says a new documentary suggests that when the war ended, Alexander the Great ordered thousands of ships to built.

He
takes that as further evidence to support his theory and has written to
a detective from Scotland Yard who is looking for Alexander's grave.

"Nobody ever, ever suspected that Alexander could have died in Broome," he said.

A hidden treasure has been unearthed five metres below the surface of a council car park in a coastal WA town.

Transcript

SCOTT BEVAN, PRESENTER: For maritime archaeologists it's a dream
come true - a surprise find in a car park in the quiet WA coastal town
of Bunbury.

Five metres below the surface the team has found
historic hidden treasure and experts say there's no site quite like it
in the world.

Nikki Wilson-Smith reports from Western Australia.

NIKKI
WILSON-SMITH, REPORTER: This isn't what you'd expect to find in a
coastal car park. In Bunbury Western Australia what was a haunt for
hoons has become something much more significant - An archaeology dig.

ROSS
ANDERSON, MARINE ARCHEOLOGIST, WA MUSEUM: We're just hitting solid
material all through here and it's wooden so it's a pretty good sign
that there's another shipwreck here.

NIKKI WILSON-SMITH: The
area around Bunbury is known as the shipwreck coast and there have been
rumours through the years of American whaling ships wrecked near the
beach and smothered by sand.

John Cross was 16 years old when he worked at a sand mine at this site. In 1961 he was on night shift when he struck wood.

JOHN
CROSS, EXCAVATOR: I hit this what seemed like something solid, it
wasn't a rock and it wasn't steel, it just felt - seeing I have a
process of working it turned out it was wood and it was Oregon wood and
Oregon wood is American.

NIKKI WILSON-SMITH: John Cross thought
he had hit a shipwreck but no-one was very interested in his find. Fifty
years later he's back working on the same site as a member of an
archaeological dig to confirm his suspicions that this car park is a
shipwreck grave yard.

JOHN CROSS: Much fun, best job I've been
on in my life actually. I've had some tough jobs in my time you know and
this is about the best I've had. So I'm sort of whistling Dixie you
know.

NIKKI WILSON-SMITH: And it turns out his hunch was right.

ROSS ANDERSON: This would have gone down is side of the hull so it's a piece of deck that's fallen over on its side.

NIKKI WILSON-SMITH: And you can see there there's still barnacles on that piece of metal.

ROSS ANDERSON: That's right, yeah, so we know this was in the inter tidal zone at one stage.

NIKKI
WILSON-SMITH: Ross Anderson is the head marine archaeologist at the
West Australian Museum and he's leading the excavation. He has been
fascinated by the stories of American whaling ships wrecked at Bunbury
and says there is no other site quite like this in the world.

ROSS
ANDERSON: As a resource, so with three of them we think in the same
location is absolutely unique. So it's that unique combination of
circumstances where you get material and wrecks and everything and then
it gets sealed up by modern development and coastline changes and that's
resulted in just sealing this as almost like a shipwreck park.

NIKKI
WILSON-SMITH: One of the ships found is a mystery and scientists are
currently testing wood samples to try and work out what it is and while
it's yet to be confirmed, archaeologists believe the other two ships on
site are American whalers wrecked here in the 1800s.

ROSS
ANDERSON: One of them, the Samuel Wright, which is the earliest one, is a
Salem whaler. So the Salem whalers were the first ones that really came
and explored these grounds in Western Australia and then everyone sort
of followed them. So like the gold rush this was like a blubber rush.

NIKKI
WILSON-SMITH: The second ship, the North America, was wrecked here in
1843 as the confused captain tried to outrun a comet. Now the ship's
hull has been uncovered, preserved over time.

ROSS ANDERSON: We
were hoping with the water probing to find wooden structure and ballast
or something like that but to actually get an intact bow structure with
all of that diagnostic information, it was quite, you know, that was a
bit of a fluke. You know, we were looking in the right place but to
actually come right down on that particular piece of structure was
fantastic.

NIKKI WILSON-SMITH: It was also fantastic for Ray
Parks, a Bunbury surveyor who estimated the location of the wrecks using
historic maps.

RAY PARKS, SURVEYOR: That was 27 years ago so
it's great to see that today they are where I thought they were, where I
positioned them. It was quite traumatic, actually, waiting to see if
something was going to come up and it did so you feel a bit justified.
You feel your work was right.

NIKKI WILSON-SMITH: After years of
planning, days of digging and hours recording painstaking details, the
archaeologists conducting this dig will simply push the sand back over
the wreck and leave it just as they found it.

VICKI RICHARDS,
CONSERVATION SCIENTIST: If they're in good environmental sort of
condition for preservation of the wreck then we suggest that it stays
there, it gets covered up and hopefully it will be there in the future
when there's more archaeological questions to be answered.

NIKKI WILSON-SMITH: But locals are disappointed.

RAY
PARKS: In a sense you feel a sense of loss when they get buried again
and you can just say well there are some wrecks under there because they
are a very big part of Bunbury's heritage and I understand there's not
too many American whalers that are still intact in this type around the
world. They were mainly broken up.

NIKKI WILSON-SMITH: While the
community waits to see what the future holds for the car park whalers,
John Cross is happy to find the answer to his own 50 year old puzzle.

JOHN
CROSS: There's probably half a dozen in here so we've just got to wait
and see. It's a shame they're going to have to cover it all up because
they've achieved so much and now they're going to cover it up but I
suppose good for someone else to come along in 50 years and have another
dig, you know.

SCOTT BEVAN: How hard will it be to push that
sand back over the site. Fascinating stuff, terrific story too by Nikki

THE ocean's deepest volcanic vents, kilometres below the surface,
are teeming with life forms never before seen that thrive near super-hot
underwater geysers, according to a new study.

Eyeless shrimps and white-tentacled anemones have ben photographed
bunched around cracks in the ocean floor spewing mineral-rich water
thatmay top 450C, researchers reported today.*

The vents - baptised the Beebe Vent Field in honour of the first scientist to venture
into the deep ocean - were discovered on the Caribbean seafloor in the Cayman
Trough, south of the Cayman Islands.

Some 5km below the surface, the trench is home to the world's deepest known
"black smoker" vents, so called for the cloudy fluid that gushes from them.

During an expedition in 2010, a team led by marine geochemist Doug Connelly
of Britain's National Oceanography Centre and University of Southampton
biologist Jon Copley used a deep-diving robot submarine to explore the trough.

The researchers also found previously unknown vents on the upper
slopes of nearby Mount Dent, which rises some 3km from the sea floor.

Its peak is the same distance beneath the surface waves.

"Finding black smoker vents on Mount Dent was a complete surprise," Connelly said
in a statement.
"Hot and acidic vents have never been seen in an area like this before."

The discoveries suggested that
active deep-sea volcanic vents
were more widespread
around the globe
than previously thought,
he said.

Cameras on the submarine captured startling images of a new species
of ghostly-pale shrimp - dubbed Rimicaris hybisae - that had gathered
in clusters of up to 2000 specimens per square metre.

Lacking normal eyes, the shrimp have a light-sensing organ on their backs,
presumably to help them navigate in the faint glow of the deep-sea vents,
said the study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Communication.

A related species, Rimicaris exoculata, has been found at the edge of another
deep-sea vent 4000km away on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

"Studying creatures at these vents and comparing them with species
at other vents around the world will help us to understand how animals disperse
and evolve in the deep ocean," Copley said.

"One of the big mysteries of deep-sea vents is how animals are able to disperse
from vent field to vent field, crossing apparently large distances."

Elsewhere at the Beebe Vent Field, the scientists saw hundreds of white anemones
lining the cracks where warm, copper-rich water seeps from the sea bed.

The vents on Mount Dent also thronged with the new shrimp, along with a
snake-like fish, an unknown species of snail and a flea-like crustacean
called an amphipod.

A SEVEN-pronged starfish, a mysterious pale octopus and a new kind
of yeti crab are among a teeming community of previously undiscovered
life on the sea floor near Antarctica, British researchers say.

The species, described this week on the online journal PloS
Biology, were first glimpsed in 2010 when researchers lowered a robotic
vehicle to explore the East Scotia Ridge deep beneath the Southern
Ocean, between Antarctica and the tip of South America.

The dark and remote area is home to hydrothermal vents, which are deep-sea
springs that spew liquid at temperatures of up to 382 degrees Celsius
and have previously been found to host unusual life forms in other parts
of the world.

"Hydrothermal vents are home to animals found nowhere else on the planet
that get their energy not from the Sun but from breaking down chemicals,
such as hydrogen sulphide," said lead researcher Alex Rogers of Oxford University.

THREE anti-whaling activists who boarded a Japanese whaler
are being held on the ship as the Gillard Government negotiates
for their release.

Attorney-General Nicola Roxon said "all options" were being considered.

Geoffrey Tuxworth, Simon Peterffy and Glen Pendlebury boarded the Japanese
whaling ship Shonan Maru 2 off the coast of Western Australia using the
cover of darkness, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society said.

The Sea Shepherd and Forest Rescue environmental groups joined forces
to smuggle the men on board.

A Sea Shepherd statement says the men delivered a message: "Return us to
shore in Australia and then remove yourself from our waters."

"Three Australian citizens are being held as prisoners on board the Japanese vessel," the statement says.

The Shonan Maru 2 had been tailing Sea Shepherd's Steve Irwin, causing tensions to rise between the two groups.

Ms Roxon said the boarding of the Japanese vessel happened outside
Australian territorial waters, which limited the Government's legal
options.

Ms Roxon said the Government would enter talks with Japan
to see if the men could be brought ashore.

"From an Australian perspective, our top priority is making sure that Australian citizens are safe," she said.

Ms Roxon said it was a "complex legal situation".

"International laws make clear that the most likely jurisdiction will be Japanese domestic law," she said.

Opposition environment spokesman Greg Hunt said the Government had ignored
warnings there could be a confrontation between whalers and protesters.

He called for a Customs vessel to be sent to the area, and for the
Government to act swiftly to bring the activists back to shore.

"The Government must seek an immediate handover of the protesters to Australian authorities," Mr Hunt said.

A report in Fairfax newspapers details documents,
obtained under Freedom of Information laws, that show
Mr Ferguson requested additional monitoring of
anti-coal mining groups and other environmental groups.

Senator Brown claims coal and fossil fuel companies pressured Mr Ferguson into having
the federal police spy on environment groups who protest against energy companies.

Senator Brown says tens of thousands of dollars of taxpayers' money is being spent
having private contractors monitor activists.
"That paying of private corporations to spy on community groups is an abuse
of taxpayers' money," he said.

"Martin Ferguson should never have been allowed to promote that and
it should be stopped. "The Attorney-General, if not the Prime Minister,
should see that it stops immediately."

A spokeswoman for Mr Ferguson says governments are concerned with
maintaining energy security.

She says this includes maintaining the rule of law and energy supply,
where issues-motivated groups seek to engage in unlawful activity.

A DARWIN boy may help re-write Australia's history after unearthing
what he believes is a 500-year-old Portuguese swivel gun on a Northern
Territory beach.

Christopher Doukas made the discovery at Dundee Beach,
about two hours' drive from Darwin, when tides dipped to exceptional lows
in January 2010, and he could walk out a long way from shore.

The boy, now aged 13, saw the item poking out of mud,
dug it out with his father and took it back to his home.

"As soon as we got it back into Darwin my dad got an angle grinder and
nicked a little bit of it. We saw it was bronze, so we knew it was old,"
Christopher said.

Research on the internet showed the item, about the size of a rifle,
bore a striking resemblance to Portuguese swivel guns, used as
anti-personnel weapons on ships in the 16th Century.

In July last year Christopher's mother, Barbara, alerted staff at the
Darwin Museum to the find, and sent in photos that she was told seemed
to indicate it was the genuine article.

But it has only been in the past few weeks, after speaking to her
local MP, that she has been asked to bring it in for further
examination.

Christopher said a similar item had sold in Britain for 8000 pounds (about $12,000),
and he would be interested in selling the gun to a museum.

Portugal occupied Timor from 1515 until 1975, although it is hotly debated
whether Portuguese explorers made it to Australia, about 700km away.

Early maps from France in the 1500s appear to show part of Northern Australia,
which some have cited as evidence Portuguese explorers arrived during that period,
although that interpretation is controversial.

Local historian Peter Forrest was sceptical Portuguese explorers reached
Northern Australia in the 1500s, but if the find was a genuine swivel gun
from that period it would be grist for the mill for people that believed the theory,
he said.

It still needed to be demonstrated that the location of the find had some
connection with Portuguese contact and the item hadn't washed up or been
left there by antique dealers in the 1800s.

Mr Forrest said there was no independent evidence of any Portuguese contact
with that part of Australia during the 1500s and quite a lot of evidence that there
was no such contact.

"I think it is jumping to a very premature conclusion to link that object with
a Portuguese presence in the top end of the territory of any great antiquity," he said.

"Even if it happened, so what? What were the consequences?" he said.

The earliest authenticated European contact with Australia
was in 1606 by a Dutch vessel Duyfken.

Here we go, just a little evidence that "tintin" does NOT 'DECODE',

A train line damaged by an earthquake

Here is a list of some of the major earthquakes to have occured in Australia in recent times:

1 March 1954, Adelaide, South Australia
Adelaide was awakened by a loud rumbling sound. This was followed by shaking, severe enough to crack walls and loosen plaster and chimneys from many houses. Although minor compared to many overseas quakes, the Adelaide earthquake was (at magnitude 5.4) severe enough to cause damage estimated at $350 million (1997 values). No serious injuries were reported.

October 1968, Meckering, Western Australia
One of the more serious Australian earthquakes in fairly recent years occurred at the small town of Meckering. Residents reported seeing ground waves as well as experiencing difficulty when driving as the 6.9 Richter magnitude earthquake struck. Old buildings collapsed, railway lines were buckled and pipelines fractured, and a 37 kilometres long fault scarp (up to 2.5 metres high) was caused. Sixteen injuries were reported and the total cost of damage estimated $50 million.

22 January 1988, Tennant Creek, Northern Territory
Significant earthquakes of magnitudes 6.3, 6.4 and 6.8 occurred near Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. These resulted in large, long ground ruptures and a 35 kilometre fault (up to 2 metre displacement) which warped underground gas pipelines, but caused only minor damage to the hospital and some homes in the town.

28 December 1989, Newcastle, New South Wales
At 10.27am, Newcastle, Australia's sixth largest city, was partially devastated by a moderate earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter Scale. The Newcastle earthquake, the first lethal one in Australia, claimed 13 lives.

The devastation to buildings and other structures was extensive, which was unusual for a relatively-small magnitude earthquake. This was due mainly to an underlying, thin layer of alluvium, which appeared to magnify ground motion (shaking). The epicentre was located 15km West Southwest of the city centre, near Boolaroo.

August 1994, Ellalong, New South Wales
A damaging earthquake again affected the Hunter region of NSW, this time in the Ellalong-Cessnock area. Measuring 5.4 on the Richter Scale, it became our third most-damaging. Several homes, hotels and other buildings suffered seriously and up to 1,000 homes were partly damaged. Infrastructure, commercial and industrial losses also occurred. Insurance payouts were $38 million and total damage costs exceeded $150 million (1997 values).

The End of a Myth

Despite Australia's seemingly low-risk situation in the middle of one of Earth's larger tectonic plates, we have had many earthquakes larger than that of Newcastle. The map to the right shows that Australia is in the middle of the Australian-Indian Plate.

The Australian Geological Survey Organisation in Canberra estimates that on average, the Australian region experiences an earthquake of at least this size, or larger, every 13-15 months.

Most of these earthquakes have been in low populated areas, so for many years people thought Australia could not be affected by this natural disaster. The Newcastle experience dispelled this myth!

A future eruption in any of these regions would be unlikely to come from an existing volcano (as the volcanoes there are generally considered to be 'once only’ erupters).
Rather, future eruptions would occur at new sites nearby.
The geological record shows that new volcanoes in these areas have erupted perhaps every 2000 years in the past 40,000 years—and given there has not been a major eruption there for the past 5000 years, a significant eruption seems well overdue. " (3)

Photo / NZPAAlarming revelations in confidential military reports reveal that the Australian Defence Force is struggling to reduce levels of sexual abuse, bullying and other problems among its troops.

Despite a massive bid to shift the force's culture and seven reports probing almost every aspect of service life after a series of scandals, documents obtained by Channel Seven under freedom of information laws show little appears to have changed.

Most of the incidents were reported after the outrage of last year's Skype scandal, in which a cadet at the elite Australian Defence Force Academy filmed his seduction of a female colleague and broadcast it live to other cadets.

The incidents included in dozens of "hot issues briefs" obtained by Channel Seven ranged from rape and attempted murder to possession of child pornography, sexual assault, the concubinage of teenagers on base and further explicit videotaping.

The greatest number of complaints involved the navy, whose problems peaked with revelations of life on board the supply ship HMAS Success during an Asian deployment in 2009.

Subject to a separate report and pending action, these included inappropriate conduct towards women, workforce bullying, a "tribal culture" on board the ship, drunken and disreputable behaviour ashore, a breakdown in discipline and serious failures of command.

Even after the subsequent outcry, problems continued on board the Success.

The Channel Seven documents said one of its officers had been accused of inappropriate relationships with junior sailors and of filming them in the shower.

Videos of sexual acts with other sailors were also discovered, butdespite a record of similar behaviour the officer was transferred to another ship.

The documents also said that just four days after the first report into the original Success allegations, a sailor on the ship - now facing court martial - allegedly indecently assaulted two others in their cabin.

More serious was the charging of a sailor from the minehunter HMAS Yarra with aggravated sexual assault and strangulation with intent to murder.

In the army, a soldier was charged with rape, deprivation of liberty and assault involving a female civilian, another at the School of Artillery was found in possession of child pornography, and yet another was accused of housing two teenagers, aged 15 and 17, for two weeks in Sydney's Holsworthy barracks.

An air force member was charged with indecently assaulting a minor.

Defence Minister Stephen Smith said yesterday that such behaviour would not be tolerated.

"It is essential that the Defence Force promotes and enforces the highest standards of behaviour in line with modern community expectations and creates an environment where complaints can be aired and appropriately addressed," he said.

Smith already has a welter of disturbing reports to consider, continuing long lists of recommendations from the five inquiries established after the Skype scandal.

Most will be released this month, with the Government's response.

Growing numbers of Europeans are fleeing the euro crisis for a new life in Australia.

In the wake of the global financial downturn and with the euro debt crisis still unfolding, many from Greece, Italy and Ireland are quitting their homeland and heading Down Under.

Figures from the Australian department of immigration show that it is the Irish who are especially keen to move south.

From 2009 to 2010, 1,280 Irish citizens were granted temporary
working visas. The following year it rose to 2,250 but in the last six
months alone the figure is already up to 3,100.

Australia has avoided the global financial crisis because of its huge
natural resources like coal and iron ore. Developing economies like
China are massive customers.

It is the strong economy that persuaded the Corbett family to move from their home in Cork to Sydney last May.

Valentina Grande: Life is good in Australia

Rory and Mary Corbett, along with their two young children, had
enjoyed a holiday to Australia and knew it was somewhere they could
happily live.

As skilled workers they have been sponsored by their new employers.

Mrs Corbett said: "Even though my husband had a job, I had a job, it
was getting to the stage where there was more money going out than there
was coming in.

"And with all the austerity cuts that were happening as well,
education funds were being cut right back, hospital funding was being
cut, so we were just looking at our kids and thinking what kind of a
future have you guys got in this country."

With a huge grin on her face, Valentina Grande is serving customers
in the sunshine at the Papa Giovanni Italian restaurant opposite
Sydney's famous Bondi beach.

In Australia on a working holiday visa, she told Sky News: "In Italy
there isn't work, there isn't money, but here you can find, very easily,
a job and get good money and good tips."

Last year just one of the restaurant's employees was from Italy - now
there are eight. Every week more Italians come through the doors
looking for a job.

They are mainly young, single and desperate for a positive start to
their working lives in a place they know they will be well paid.

"Life is good here," Ms Grande said, "I get paid weekly. In Italy I
was paid monthly so if the restaurant didn't make money, you could work
for a few weeks and find you don't get paid at the end. Life there is
stressful."

Professor Stephen Castles from Sydney University is an expert in global migration.

He believes the influx of workers to Australia is welcome, especially
in sectors where recruitment is difficult, but creates worries for the
countries they are leaving.

"It is a huge loss," he said: "They are losing the people they will
need when the economy recovers, if the economy recovers, and there may
be global competition to attract those skills. Those counties might try
and attract their citizens back."

Even in Australia the outlook is not completely sunny. Australia
exports to Europe and the US, making it vulnerable to any serious drop
in Chinese and Indian demand for its minerals.

But for now it is seen by many refugees of the euro crisis as a place of opportunity and optimism.

Last month, they could have chosen almost any day to warn that they
were placing the entire eurozone on watch for a possible downgrade; but
they elected to make the announcement just hours after Nicolas Sarkozy
and Angela Merkel used an emergency summit to promise to safeguard the
euro.

And
now they have chosen Friday the 13th to confirm that the majority of
those 15 nations put on negative watch have now been downgraded.

And, as if to twist the knife, it also emerged on Friday that talks
between Athens and private sector investors aimed at voluntarily
reducing the total amount of Greek debt had fallen through.

Investors may ignore the credit ratings

And, to top it all off, clearing house LCH Clearnet raised its margin
requirement for those using it to buy Italian debt from 8.15% to 8.3%.

It is not just the date that is ironic. Against all expectations, the
eurozone had been looking tentatively more healthy in the past few
weeks.

The past seven days have seen successful debt auctions by two of the most troubled euro members - Spain and Italy.

The European Central Bank's emergency lending operations seemed to have calmed nerves significantly.

Now, it looks quite conceivable that eurozone policymakers will spend
the rest of the month firefighting the next round in the single
currency's crisis until they gather at the end of January for their
latest Brussels summit.

I understand that senior European financial officials were deep in a
key Brussels set of negotiations when they learnt - on their
blackberries - about the impending downgrades, and had to scramble to
come up with a strategy for downplaying the news.

Although it clearly has more of the wow factor, there is good reason
to suspect that the S&P downgrade (which includes France, Austria

As I wrote when S&P
first announced that they were putting the euro area on creditwatch
negative, there are growing signs that investors are choosing to ignore
official credit ratings.

A downgrade could affect Mr Sarkozy's presidential campaign

To put it another way, the fact that France will be AA rather than
AAA is unlikely to change investors' minds when it comes to buying (or
selling) French debt.

Nonetheless, a French downgrade (and for that matter a downgrade of
other major euro members) will trigger a downgrade of the EFSF - the
continent-wide rescue fund which was supposed to bolster the currency.

Moreover, it represents a serious political blow for Nicolas Sarkozy as he fights for re-election this year.

Italy suffers a downgrade of two notches, as do Portugal and Spain,
implying that S&P is particularly worried about their capacity to
withstand the crisis.

And when you read the statement accompanying the decisions,
the explanation of why the downgrades have happened is damning, saying:
"Policy initiatives taken by European policymakers in recent weeks may
be insufficient to fully address ongoing systemic stresses in the
eurozone".

It's equally intriguing to examine the countries which were spared a downgrade.

Germany hangs onto its AAA crown, and has its outlook put back on a
stable footing - implying it is nowhere near being downgraded.

Berlin might reasonably ask why it was lumped in with the rest of the
currency zone when its circumstances (which haven't really changed over
the past month) don't merit it.

Thanks to its part as the poster boy of austerity, Ireland keeps its
rating unchanged, but, at BBB+ it was close to junk status as it was.

Finland, which historically has one of the world's best debt-payment
records, almost alone in not having defaulted in any way during or after
WWII, retains its AAA rating, but is put on "outlook negative", which
means it still has the sword of damocles hanging over it.

And as of Friday evening there were three euro members which are junk
bond issuers, which in technical terms means they have ratings of below
BBB and in normal-person terms means their debt is regarded as highly
at risk of default. Greece (CC) is joined in that club by Portugal (BB)
and Cyprus (BB+) - home to many UK nationals.

But it may well be the breakdown of the Greek talks that prove the more serious of today's stories.

If, as the statement from the Institute for International Finance
suggests, it will be impossible for the investors and the Greeks to
reduce the country's debt voluntarily, it means the country will have to
go through a messy default.

That implies a wave of stress spreading through the financial system -
precisely the eventuality European policymakers were trying desperately
to avoid through these negotiations.

Over the course of Friday, the cost of borrowing for the affected
euro members rose sharply, although it dropped for Germany, as well as
the UK - both of which will be among the few AAA countries remaining.

Either way, both of these pieces of news are deeply worrying for the single currency - and bring forward its moment of truth.

Can its leaders unite and create a proper political and fiscal union,
or does this mean the beginning of the end for the world's biggest ever
economic project?

British explorers are preparing to drill through
almost two miles of ice into an Antarctic lake as they
seek clues about life one million years ago.

The team used a 'tractor train' to tow nearly 70 tonnes of equipment to the
Lake Ellsworth drilling site which is one of the most hostile environments on earth
as they prepare for the operation.

They will return in November to collect water and sediment from the buried lake
using space industry standard 'clean technology'.

The 155-mile journey through the Ellsworth Mountain Range took them three days to complete.

Scientists have been planning the investigation for more than 15 years.

The Lake Ellsworth Programme Principal Investigator, Professor Martin
Siegert from the University of Edinburgh, said: 'The completion of this
stage of the mission is a welcome one - we are now one step closer to
finding out if new and unique forms of microbial life could have evolved

During phase two of the project researchers will use a high-pressure drill
to create a borehole through 1.8miles of ice.
They will then lower a titanium probe to measure and sample the water,
followed by a corer to extract sediment from the lake.

It will take around three days to drill through the ice and the scientists
will have about 24 hours to gather samples before the hole starts to freeze over.

The equipment has been left one mile from the actual drilling site so that

Lake Ellsworth is around 8.6 miles long, 1.2-1.8 miles wide and 150m deep,
around the size of Loch Katrine in the Trossachs, or Lake Windermere in the
Lake District.

Chris Hill, Advance Party Member and Lake Ellsworth Programme Manager said:
'This is a major milestone for the programme and we are delighted that
our complex logistical operations were a success this season.

'Working within the short Antarctic summer season adds pressure to our time on
the continent, which is why we had to plan two stages of the programme.'

The Lake Ellsworth programme is a consortium, funded by the Natural
Environment Research Council (NERC), between British Antarctic Survey
and the National Oceanography Centre - and the UK university sector.

More than 400 subglacial lakes
have so far been discovered

"The cable is going underneath here," says Benoit
Pirenne, standing at the water's edge on Canada's Vancouver Island.
"It's going out 500 miles (800km) in a big loop in the ocean, coming
back in the same place."

The Vancouver cable connects a network of scientific
instruments on the floor of the north Pacific, some as deep as 1.5 miles
(2.5km).

Set up by Pirenne and his colleagues at the University of
Victoria, and called Neptune Canada, they continuously monitor the
marine environment.

Ocean floor listening posts in the north Pacific off Vancouver Island

The scientists are harvesting large amounts of information,
including water pressure readings that help them better understand the
movement of tsunamis through oceans, which they hope will lead to more
accurate warning systems.

But they are also listening.

Pressure-sensitive microphones pick up the live sounds of
everything from whales and shipping to seismic activity and the movement
of tectonic plates, and this audio is shared with scientists all over
the world.

It's also now available to anyone else with an internet connection.

Ocean 'ears'
"This is like big ears placed on the bottom of the ocean,"
says Michel Andre, a bioacoustics expert at the Technical University of
Catalonia in Barcelona, as he listens to the audio being streamed live
from Vancouver.

Andre's passion is the study of noise in the ocean, both
natural and man-made, and how it affects marine life including whales
and dolphins.

"Sound travels five times faster through water than through
air, and in the ocean it can travel for thousands of miles," he says.

To help the non-scientific community appreciate just how noisy the oceans have become, he's launched a website called listentothedeep.com which streams the live sounds from Vancouver, and 14 other ocean floor "observatories" around the world.

"Here you can hear the noise coming from a ship," says Andre as he clicks on a green dot in the Mediterranean.

The ship is on the surface of the sea, but its monotonous
engine sound eerily dominates the soundscape more than a mile below.

Software developed by Andre's team can identify a range of different sounds.

"These coloured bars here represent the sound of sperm whales," he says.

"And if you click here, in the sound library, this is the noise of the Japanese earthquake."

An audio graph of bright orange shows the pattern of the
earthquake sound, which came from the Kushiro and Hatsushima
observatories off the coast of Japan, in March last year.

On Andre's site, the sound has been sped up to make it
audible to the human ear. It's a growing deep rumble, and a chilling
experience for anyone who followed the news of the devastating tsunami
that struck the Japanese mainland.

National security
For decades, the sounds of the deep sea were considered highly sensitive military data.

During the Cold War, the US Navy set up a network of
underwater microphones in many parts of the world to track Soviet
submarines.

Now the US Navy says it's not too concerned about friendly
civilian scientists listening in, but it is nervous about the opening up
of real time ocean sound to the general public.

"It's a region where we have naval operations," says US Navy
oceanographer Robert Winokur, referring to the area off Vancouver
monitored by the scientists from Neptune Canada.

Beneath the surface

Leonardo Da Vinci noted in 1490 that sounds carry long distances under water - whale songs can travel thousands of miles
Sound travels about five times faster in water than in air, and is generally faster at greater depths
Marine mammals depend on sound for communication because sight
and smell are less effective under water - scientists fear that shipping
noise harms whales, porpoises and dolphins
Fish also hear sounds within a limited frequency range, and produce sound with their swim bladders and teeth

Allowing everyone to listen to
that part of the ocean poses a threat to US national security, he says,
because someone - he won't say who - might use that information to work
out the type and location of US naval vessels.

To reduce that threat, the US and Canadian navies have struck
a deal with the scientists that effectively allows them to censor the
sound of naval operations.

"Rather than it being sent to the internet in real time, we
divert it to a naval facility where the data are screened, and then
returned as soon as possible to the University of Victoria," says
Winokur.

In other words, the sound is scrubbed to remove the noise of naval vessels.

Widening the net
The US Navy says it hopes to work out similar arrangements with other ocean monitoring projects elsewhere in the world.

But Cornell University ocean acoustics expert Christopher Clark doubts it will succeed.

"The strategy they're using with Neptune (the Vancouver project) is a dead end," he says.

Clark insists the US Navy doesn't own the ocean acoustic
environment and should accept that what was once military technology is
now in the hands of civilians.

the US shifts its focus to Asia, Alexander Neill, head of the Asia
Security Programme at the Royal United Services Institute, sets out the
Chinese military advances challenging the regional balance.

At the Pentagon recently, US President Barack Obama announced
deep cuts to the US military and set out a shift in attention towards
the Asia-Pacific region, in a thinly-veiled message to China.

Despite a narrative of peaceful intent, China's leaders have
struggled to reassure the US over the direction of the People's
Liberation Army (PLA). Both countries admit that their military
dialogue falls well behind other aspects of the relationship.

So the shift has brought renewed scrutiny of the PLA's latest capabilities against US dominance in the Pacific.

In recent years the PLA has demonstrated impressive new
capabilities at sea and in space, aimed at showcasing the success of its
modernisation effort.

The obvious message is to deliver a powerful warning if Taiwan were to declare formal independence.

But Pentagon planners are now concerned that the Taiwan
contingency has been eclipsed by China's broader maritime territorial
claims and demands for more international space to protect the arteries
feeding China's growth.

'Unrestricted warfare'
China is developing a range of capabilities linked to the
space and cyber domain in order to sidestep the overwhelming might of
the US military in the Pacific region. The PLA calls this fighting
"local wars under informationised conditions".

China took the first step towards a space station when it launched the Tiangong 1 module

China recognised almost two decades ago that in the mid-term
the PLA could be no match for US conventional forces. So it began
working on what was dubbed "unrestricted warfare" - combining multiple
methods to defeat a superior opponent.

At the same time party leaders launched adventurous civilian
acquisition projects in the high-tech domain to increase Chinese
competitiveness and to boost indigenous production capabilities.

The PLA has been running military projects mirroring these
civilian acquisition ventures. Sometimes involving dual-use
technologies, the military and civilian strands have often been
indistinguishable.

China's space programme is a case in point. The recent
successful docking manoeuvre between a Shenzhou module and the Tiangong
Space station is as much a triumph for the PLA as it is for China's
civilian space agency.

Space theatre
Should the US ever intervene in a cross-strait clash or
challenge China's maritime claims, Beijing would employ a pre-emptive
"sea denial" strategy alongside its conventional operations - preventing
US battle carrier groups operating in or near its claimed territorial
waters.

Its submarine-launched ballistic and cruise missiles are now a
lethal force. China's long-range nuclear weapons systems have also
undergone significant upgrades and its strategic rocket force, the
Second Artillery Corps, is very much the pride of the PLA.

One of the most pressing concerns for the US navy is the
threat posed by a "carrier killer" anti-ship missile with enhanced
targeting capabilities facilitated from space. China very recently
launched its own Beidou Positioning System, challenging the monopoly of
the US Global Positioning System (GPS).

One of the PLA's most sensitive advances has been the secret
deployment and testing of advanced anti-satellite (ASAT) and Anti
Ballistic Missile (ABM) weapons systems.

Two years ago, China successfully intercepted one of its own
ballistic missiles as it streaked through space. This test coincided
with the Pentagon's sale of Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) Patriot
systems to Taiwan.

Some experts believe a Chinese ASAT campaign against a
careful selected group of US satellites could have catastrophic effect
on the US military.

This capability, combined with the potential for China to
develop its own Ballistic Missile Defence umbrella, suggests that the
space domain will be a new theatre for US-China rivalry.

Chinese ASAT capabilities are not exclusively reserved for
"kill vehicles", like the one which obliterated an ageing Chinese
weather satellite in 2007.

It is now believed that the successful 2007 "kill" was in
fact the third test in a series. Previous tests had demonstrated an
ability to manoeuvre in proximity to targeted satellites.

This would suggest that China has experimented with
techniques which could be used for "space mining", where mines or
mini-satellites armed with jamming technologies could be placed within
the orbits of an opponent's spacecraft.

Carrier group
In addition to its "sea denial" and space warfare strategies, China is also expanding its conventional capabilities.

The PLA Air Force in recent years has extended its ability
for offshore operations, enhancing an offensive capability. It is
planning an overhaul of its ageing fleet with the deployment of over
3,000 new aircraft.

China first aircraft carrier began sea trials in 2011

For the most part China has relied on copying Russian fighter
technology. However, the roll-out of the Chengdu J-20 Stealth fighter
prototype raised eyebrows last year, carefully timed to coincide with a
visit by the US defence secretary.

There have been some very significant developments in the
deployment of Chinese submarines in recent years. Beijing possesses 10
Russian-built ultra-quiet Kilo class submarines possibly armed with
200km-range anti-ship cruise missiles.

Since 2006, when a Chinese submarine surfaced undetected
within torpedo range of the US aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, China's
submarine force has regularly marauded the US Navy and its allies in the
Pacific.

It is thought that China plans to build three aircraft
carrier battle groups, each armed with 40 fighters, up to eight
warships, three nuclear-powered attack submarines and a number of
support vessels. The PLA Navy's retrofitted Varyag carrier, currently
under sea-trials, will serve as a training platform.

Even if the aircraft carrier would likely be a prestige piece
and more directed at Chinese domestic pride, the prospect of a Chinese
aircraft carrier will certainly cause ripples for the broader East Asian
naval balance.

Uncertain factors
While much attention has been paid to the breakneck speed of
Chinese military modernisation over the last decade, the events of 9/11
and the subsequent campaigns in the Middle East and Afghanistan provided
a window of opportunity for China to accelerate development.

In some cases there may have been, quite literally, windfalls
for the PLA. There is speculation that China acquired undamaged
Tomohawk cruise missile components in the early stages of the
Afghanistan campaign a decade ago.

When US Special Forces failed to completely destroy one of
their stealth helicopters during Operation Geronimo, Pakistan's military
may have allowed PLA counterparts to inspect the tail rotor.

The PLA must be congratulating itself on the impressive array
of weaponry which has tilted the balance in the Taiwan Strait in its
favour.

China's new-found capabilities combined with the opaque
nature of its military modernisation create a formula for mistrust with
the US.

There are perhaps three factors for uncertainty. Firstly, the
Chinese military's confidence in its new equipment could lead to an
overestimation of its capability as an emerging great power.

Secondly, the Chinese leadership could underestimate its
ability to control an unexpected escalation of hostilities in the
Pacific.

Finally, the domestic political factor - the PLA's external
behaviour could become a reaction to internal nationalistic sentiment,
instability or faction fighting as Beijing prepares for the fifth
generation leadership handover this year.

An independent group of scientists say the Federal Government
should scrap the draft Murray-Darling Basin plan, which they say
"manipulated science" in an "attempt to engineer a predetermined
political outcome".

The Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists says the plan does not provide enough information on how much water is needed to return the basin to health and does not
prepare for the effects of climate change and future droughts.
The group has spent two months analysing the draft, which drew criticism from
environmentalists and farmers alike when it was released in November.
Environmental engineer Tim Stubbs says it beggars belief that the Murray-Darling
Basin Authority (MDBA) would recommend spending $9 billion to buy 2,750
gigalitres of water at the same time as proposing an increase in
groundwater extractions of 2,600 gigalitres.

"We've actually said the Government should withdraw the draft plan," he said.
"The primary reason for that is the draft plan does not provide the
information that anybody needs, whether it be a politician, the
Government, the Parliament, an irrigator, an environmental scientist."It
doesn't tell us if we get a healthy Murray-Darling Basin. Clearly we
don't. They make it clear they don't achieve all the objectives that
they set out to achieve.
"The plan should clearly say which ones we don't. Are we going to achieve our objectives? Are we going to have a healthy estuary? Are we going to have an open Murray mouth that is
leading to a health estuary?"
Unknowns
Mr Stubbs says the figure of 2,750 gigalitres to save the system was decided before the plan was begun.
"The authority decided on a number in March last year. The science has then
subsequently been done and generated that number at the end of the
process," he said.
"It's difficult to see if we've got the full picture yet. We've been provided a picture in the draft plan that says 2,750 [gigalitres] is the best volume for the basin.
"The number in the plan doesn't tell us how the export of salt will happen. We need
to export about 2 million tonnes of salt annually.
"The plan also doesn't clearly address how increasing groundwater extractions by 2,600 gigalitres will impact the surface water.
"There's a whole lot of unknowns that surround that 2,750 number."
Mr Stubbs says water buybacks and infrastructure grants should cease until the plan is improved.
"Thereis enough good work that the authority has done, good modelling tools
that they've developed, good work on the social and economic side of the
analysis that can actually be brought together to provide a plan that
lets people understand the environmental outcomes," he said.
The Wentworth Group is an independent body made up of economists and
scientists, including former Australian of the Year Professor Tim Flannery.

The National Farmers Federation (NFF) says it is
concerned by the rising level of foreign investment in agricultural land
and says it welcomes more regular research into the issue.

A report from the Australian Bureau of Agricultural Research Economic and
Sciences (ABARES) shows the amount of farmland that is either partly or
wholly foreign-owned has increased by nearly 60 per cent since the early
1980s.

But it also found that roughly 99 per cent of agricultural
businesses by number are entirely Australian owned, as is 89 per cent
of agricultural land and around 91 per cent of water entitlements.

The Government says the report shows that foreign investment is a good
thing for Australia, but it has decided to commission more regular
research into the issue, a move the NFF welcomes.

"We've got a baseline now with the work that's been done and we're going to have
biennial assessments," NFF president Jock Laurie said.

"I think that's crucial to understand where the trends are, where the trends are
going, and obviously if there needs to be adjustment made to the
Australian policy in regard to what the trends are showing."
Mr Laurie says the numbers do not tell the full story.
"Over the last few years there has been some changes in the way that foreign ownership has come in," he said.

"The changes we've seen over the last few years are very much associated
around... probably purchases around mining areas, for instance, and also
overseas governments looking seriously at coming in and being players
for the Australian market."

Mr Laurie says the Federal Government should apply a national interest test
to some investments from foreign governments and continue to monitor any changes
in levels of overseas ownership.

But the NFF acknowledges foreign investment can be "enormously" beneficial.

"It has maintained ... lots of big players coming into the market and even
though they're buying top-end properties, you get the ripple effect
right through the property market in Australia," Mr Laurie said.

"What that does is maintain equity levels in rural land right across all
property holders within the Australian community, and that's been very
important.

"They also in many ways... invest a lot of money into the industry. They use a lot of
new technology, they drive a lot of R and D within their own industry, so there are some
very good components."

The Federal Opposition says there are still many unanswered questions about the level of foreign ownership of agricultural land.

Agriculture spokesman John Cobb says the level of detail in the report is disappointing.
"It doesn't show what the value of land is as compared to what it was once," he said.
"It doesn't show what areas of production are involved. It doesn't even say where the land is.

"And what's even more disappointing is that the Government says 'we don't
know very much about this and we're going to report to you more often
about what we don't know'."
