Australian sets ocean swim record

shark-infested waters to set a record for an unassisted solo ocean swim
with a 108 km marathon between two of the Cayman islands.
The 48-year-old from Townsville came ashore on Grand Cayman on Sunday
night and was so exhausted that she was barely able to stand after her
40 hours and 41 minutes in the water.
Severely dehydrated and unable to speak with a swollen tongue, she
lifted her arms in triumph and glanced at hundreds of spectators before
collapsing on the beach.
"This was the longest unassisted ocean solo swim," said Steven
Munatones, a swim adviser and observer for the International Marathon
Swimming Hall of Fame.
"What Penny did physically and psychologically was beyond incredible."
To qualify for the record, according to Hall of Fame standards, the
swimmer cannot use a shark cage, a wetsuit or flippers or draft off
escort boats and must be verified by an independent observer.
The previous record was 101 km.
After her swim, Palfrey told the ABC she was aware of sharks shadowing her along the way.
"One of the white tip sharks, it just shadowed me the entire night - I
could see it sort of five feet away, maybe more," she said.
"I had the shark shield on so it was just outside the range of the
shark shield and it was just cruising underneath me all night long.
"I could see it down there, the white shape, just sort of swimming away."
She says her first request at the end of the swim was for ice cream.
Guinness World Records uses looser guidelines for unassisted swims,
according to Munatones, who keeps records for the International Marathon
Swimming Hall of Fame in the Americas.
Munatones said the last 16 km of Palfrey's Bridge Swim - so-called
for the crossing between Little Cayman and Grand Cayman - were the
toughest as she had to fight a "wicked current" after more than 30 hours
in the water.
"She was weak and her arm strokes were just slicing through the water," Munatones said after Palfrey came ashore.
"She wasn't moving that fast but she just hung with it."
Although an escort boat was fitted with a shark shield that sends out
electrical signals as a repellent, four white tip sharks approached
Palfrey on Sunday within a few hours of each other. Crew estimated one
shark was 9 feet long (2.7 metres).
While rarely seen in Cayman waters, white tips are known to be aggressive and dangerous to swimmers and divers.
This was Palfrey's third attempt at the world record. Her previous
two attempts in Hawaii were halted after she was severely stung by
jellyfish.

New satellite images reveal how ash from the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic complex in Chile has spread around the world.
NASA says the ash flew high into the atmosphere, putting it above the winds and weather that usually disperse such plumes.

On Monday June 13, NASA's Aqua satellite captured this image of
a concentrated ash plume visible over southern Australia and the Tasman
Sea.
Air travel in Australia, New Zealand and across South America was thrown into chaos, as the ash clouds pose a risk to flights.
The ash plume is clearly visible above New Zealand and the South Pacific Ocean in this NASA image, also from June 13.

captured on June 6, which also shows a plume spreading over Argentina
and out into the Atlantic Ocean.
As Puyehue-Cordon Caulle emitted a plume of light-coloured ash
on June 6, NASA says a shift in the winds formed a prominent kink in the
plume, as visible in this satellite image. The plume here is stretching
along the edge of the Andes.
The Puyehue-Cordon Caulle eruption started on June 4. This NASA
satellite image from that day shows ash soaring more than 14 kilometres
into the air.
The plume blew north and then east over the Atlantic Ocean, reaching at least 3,300 kilometres in length.
This animation from the Bureau of Meteorology shows the ash
plume spreading from South America around the Southern Hemisphere and
close to southern Australia.
Graham Weston, a volcanic ash forecaster with the Bureau of
Meteorology's Volcano Ash Advisory Centre says an eruption in South
America in 1991 led to an ash plume circumnavigating the globe twice.

It's hard to identify a more popular decision taken by
the Gillard Government than the suspension of live cattle exports to
Indonesia.
Yet even that has been awash in an ocean of negativity.
The overwhelming sentiment of most of the graziers in the far north
has fallen somewhere between philosophical and supportive. One quoted
his son saying that he would rather go broke than put his animals
through such cruelty. Another - Paul Holmes a Court - one of the biggest
exporters of live cattle to Indonesia - says the government had no
choice and the ban should only be lifted when proper surveillance is
guaranteed.
Yet barely anywhere in the media, not in print, on radio or
television, on the ABC or the commercial outlets, or online is there any
real reflection of how the community would have wanted the government
to respond to the horror of the Four Corners program.
The reports instead focus on:
- Why wasn't this done months ago? Why did the government have to see the pictures before it did anything?
- They should have gone much further. There needs to be a total and permanent ban on live cattle exports.
- What about the graziers whose businesses could go to the wall? What about the job losses, and what about compensation?
- This is in breach of World Trade Organisation guidelines.
- Markets will be lost to the South Americans. We'll never get it back.
- This is going to dramatically increase the price of meat for Indonesia's poor.
- They care more about cattle than refugees.
- And the Minister speaks gobbledygook!
The media treatment was compounded early on when the introduction to
many of the reports - even on the ABC - spoke of fury and anger in the
north over the decision, while the reports themselves contained nothing
of the sort. It was almost as if the media couldn't comprehend that
maybe the industry itself would take the view a problem existed that
needed fixing.
So why are even the most popular decisions taken by this government, essentially public relations disasters?
It's easy to blame the media, as many will. The circumstances of a
hung parliament and minority government has created unfamiliarity and
uncertainty around the issues, whatever they are.
The Government's history, on insulation, school halls, and the East
Timor solution invites instant scepticism on everything. A government
decision = controversy = crisis. They can't even give away set top boxes
to pensioners without a furore.
The media has its faults, but a lot of the blame rests with the
Government itself. In this case, there was nobody other than the
Government to sell the positives; not the animal welfare people because
they wanted tougher action; not the graziers because they had to have
one eye to compensation; and not the cows because of their obvious
limitations.
It was up to the Government, and they blew it.
The Minister for Agriculture (yes Australia has one) Joe Ludwig had
been warned about the problem for months but handed it back to the
industry to fix.
Then when the Four Corners report went to air he astounded many of
his caucus colleagues by taking a half way measure and calling for an
inquiry.
And finally when the sensible decision was taken, the minister talked
about "appropriate animal welfare outcomes" and "supply chain
assurances".
To the prospect of resuming the trade in six months, he said "We need
to put in place that supply chain assurance so as soon as we can move
to a supply chain assurance then we can transition for the longer term."
In other words, when we're satisfied the Indonesians have stopped brutalising the cattle, we'll resume the trade.
But these days gobbledygook is not the only problem. It goes way
beyond that to a failure to tell the public the truth about anything.
Ross Gittins hit the nail on the head in the SMH when he wrote:"One
thing I despise about life in Australia today is the way power chasing
politicians and self promoting media personalities seek to advance
themselves by encouraging people living in the most prosperous period in
our history to feel sorry for themselves.
"Apparently the soaring cost of living is absolutely killing us."
The Government folds itself into the Opposition's narrative that cost
of living pressures are weighing down the nation. It's too hard to do
otherwise; too edgy. So ministers have even lost the ability to talk
about prosperity. We shouldn't be surprised then, that they can't handle
cows either.

Indigenous jobs are rare, their loss would be tragedy

exports risks a catastrophic destruction of jobs and fragile regional

Thirty years ago I spent two months in Wilcannia, a dot on the Barrier Highway about 200 kilometres from Broken Hill.
Through the burning days of January and February the stay seemed much longer.
Wilcannia was a port in its pomp, in the late 1900s when paddle
steamers and wool barges plied the Darling River. Old-timers told me
that when the river flooded some paddle-boats set out across the plain,
only to be stranded when the water receded.
Then the trade, and the river, dried up and Wilcannia was stranded.
In the summer of 1981 there wasn't much glory about the town. The
worst of it was "The Malley" a stretch of baked clay where some of the
local Barkindji people lived. The tumbledown shacks, the rubbish, the
smell; everything about it was an assault on the idea of Australia. A
rich and decent nation should not let its people live like that.
I met a shearer while I was stumbling through the Dantesque
wasteland. He invited me to join him outside his corrugated iron humpy
for a cup of tea. After about half an hour I finally worked up the
courage to ask: "How can you live here?"
He said he loved it. He said wouldn't live anywhere else. He had lots of friends and was happy.
Of all the appalling statistics that define the lot of the Indigenous
population in nearly 200 pages compiled by the Australian Bureau of
Statistics just one positive stands out. Despite their bad health, early
deaths, absurd rates of imprisonment and low rates of employment, 72
per cent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 15 years
and over self-report as feeling happy all or most of the time. In remote
areas the figure is higher, 78 per cent.
And that shows a resilience of spirit that gives cause to hope for
the future of the Indigenous population, despite our best efforts at
actively and passively annihilating them.
I have never returned to Wilcannia but people tell me it is worse now, with burnt out buildings and boarded up shops.
And the sense that things aren't improving in some Indigenous
communities was echoed this week by the Mayor of the Northern Territory
town of Katherine, Anne Shepherd.
Ms Shepherd is Australian-born but was nursing in England when she
decided to take up a job in Katherine "because I liked the sound of the
name".
When she stepped from the small plane on to the dirt airfield in the
blistering summer heat, Katherine's appeal evaporated. She was also
appalled by the suggestion of the matron that this was a great place to
find a husband.
Two days later she met him at the local bank and has never moved. She
loves the town but is saddened by the decline of Katherine's Indigenous
population.
"I remember those people when I first came," she said. "I was nursing
at the hospital. The pride that they had and how self-reliant they
were. And I see that so many of the old people have gone, of course, and
I think that you know, that's one of the problems as well, that the
leadership and the strength that those people had all those years ago
doesn't seem to be around anymore."
She sees alcoholism and violence as just symptoms of a soul-deep illness.
"I think it actually starts with the dispossession. I think then there's the hopelessness, the loss of culture."
Ms Shepherd believes that some of the worst problems have been created by the best intentions.
"I think the welfare system is killing Indigenous people. What have
we had now, 30-35 years of welfare for Indigenous people? It certainly
hasn't helped them."
Nor does she think the most recent set of Canberra-devised good
intentions, the Federal Intervention, has done much good. The alcohol
bans in the communities around Katherine simply drove the drinkers to
town.
And, ironically, while the Prime Minister was touring Indigenous
communities in the Northern Territory this week her Government announced
another well-intentioned move likely to cause more suffering: the
suspension of live cattle exports to Indonesia.
Real Indigenous jobs are rare. The 2006 census shows that only 48 per
cent of the Aboriginal workforce-aged population were recorded as in
"employment". This compares to 72 per cent for other Australians - a gap
of 24 percentage points. That's probably erring on the optimistic side
because the definition of a job is a touch loose in some parts and the
ABS has a little trouble gathering reliable information in rural and
remote regions.
But we do know this. There are 82 Indigenous cattle properties in
northern Australia with strong links to the live export trade - 54 in
the Territory, 22 in the Kimberley and Pilbara and six in far north
Queensland. These directly support 700 real Indigenous jobs and it's
estimated they indirectly support a further 17,000 people in station
communities. And that's not counting the Indigenous employees working
for non-Indigenous companies. All up the cattle industry that trades
with Indonesia employs 11,000 people.
There is no excuse for the shocking animal cruelty in Indonesian
abattoirs and the Government should play a role in ensuring that the
live export trade is cleaned up. But just pulling the plug on it risks a
catastrophic destruction of jobs and fragile regional economies.
Contractors - road train drivers, helicopter pilots - were having their
work terminated within hours of the suspension of the trade.
Indigenous jobs - any jobs - in regional and remote communities are hard to come by. Their loss would also be a tragedy.

were. And I see that so many of the old people have gone, of course, and
I think that you know, that's one of the problems as well, that the
leadership and the strength that those people had all those years ago
doesn't seem to be around anymore."
She sees alcoholism and violence as just symptoms of a soul-deep illness.
"I think it actually starts with the dispossession. I think then there's the hopelessness, the loss of culture."
Ms Shepherd believes that some of the worst problems have been created by the best intentions.
"I think the welfare system is killing Indigenous people. What have
we had now, 30-35 years of welfare for Indigenous people? It certainly
hasn't helped them."
Nor does she think the most recent set of Canberra-devised good
intentions, the Federal Intervention, has done much good. The alcohol
bans in the communities around Katherine simply drove the drinkers to
town.
And, ironically, while the Prime Minister was touring Indigenous
communities in the Northern Territory this week her Government announced
another well-intentioned move likely to cause more suffering: the
suspension of live cattle exports to Indonesia.
Real Indigenous jobs are rare. The 2006 census shows that only 48 per
cent of the Aboriginal workforce-aged population were recorded as in
"employment". This compares to 72 per cent for other Australians - a gap
of 24 percentage points. That's probably erring on the optimistic side
because the definition of a job is a touch loose in some parts and the
ABS has a little trouble gathering reliable information in rural and
remote regions.
But we do know this. There are 82 Indigenous cattle properties in
northern Australia with strong links to the live export trade - 54 in
the Territory, 22 in the Kimberley and Pilbara and six in far north
Queensland. These directly support 700 real Indigenous jobs and it's
estimated they indirectly support a further 17,000 people in station
communities. And that's not counting the Indigenous employees working
for non-Indigenous companies. All up the cattle industry that trades
with Indonesia employs 11,000 people.
There is no excuse for the shocking animal cruelty in Indonesian
abattoirs and the Government should play a role in ensuring that the
live export trade is cleaned up. But just pulling the plug on it risks a
catastrophic destruction of jobs and fragile regional economies.
Contractors - road train drivers, helicopter pilots - were having their
work terminated within hours of the suspension of the trade.
Indigenous jobs - any jobs - in regional and remote communities are hard to come by. Their loss would also be a tragedy.

Foreigners can get the funniest impressions of Australia.
A charming, educated, middle-aged American
working in the US Federal Reserve Bank
told me some years ago that it was her dream
to visit the Sydney Opera House.
So why don't you? "Oh, I couldn't stand the sharks!"
came her emphatic answer. Sharks?
Puzzled, I asked what she meant.
"The Opera House is right there in the harbour,
with sharks all around,"
she explained as if I were especially thick.
"I am completely terrified of sharks."
But, I tried to assure her, you don't need to cross the water
to get to the Opera House. It's on the foreshore.
Just stroll along the walkway, or catch a taxi to the door.
The land route is shark-free.
Was she pleased to discover that she'd been
under a misapprehension, that her dream was now in reach?
Not a bit of it. She simply refused to believe me.
She actually scoffed at my insistence,
as if I were a trickster trying to play a prank
on a gullible foreigner.
It occurred to me that this woman
probably knew only two things about Australia:
it's home to a sublime piece of architecture on Sydney Harbour,
and it has lots of sharks.
All she had done was to put them together. With odd results.
What she lacked was perspective.
In the past year, this column has been preoccupied with
the porkies and porkbarrels of our national polity -
as a political column must be. But for a moment,
I'd like to put aside the scalpel and the quibble and
get some perspective on the place.
Australia is a bloody miracle.
If you had set out to design a
successful, free, peaceful, prosperous,
tolerant, modern society,
you would not have started with Australia's beginnings.
On the contrary, Australia's white settlement set it up for failure.
The population was stocked with Britain's criminal outcasts.
Charles Darwin was confident that our convict genes were our destiny.
After inspecting colonial Australia in 1836, he wrote that
"it can hardly fail to degenerate".
White settlement had begun in criminality and barbarity
and it wasn't going to get any better,
the great naturalist determined.
Similarly, the landscape was most unlikely to
support a prosperous society.
Jared Diamond,
a professor of geology and environmental health sciences
at the University of California, Los Angeles,
wrote in his 2005 book Collapse that
"ecologically, the Australian environment
is exceptionally fragile, the most fragile
of any First World country except perhaps Iceland."
Australia has less rain than any other continent apart from Antarctica
and about a third less than the next-driest continent, Asia.
Soil nutrients were thin from the outset. And when the separate British
colonies federated to form the new Commonwealth of Australia, the first
moments of nationhood were not very promising for a society hoping to
develop any sort of tolerance.
One of the very first acts of the new Parliament was
a law prohibiting Chinese immigrants,
the policy known as White Australia.
Aggressive racism was one of the strongest
common bonds bringing the new states together.
Yet, somehow, from criminal, brutal, racist beginnings,
the country developed into a law-abiding, harmonious, tolerant society.
The precariousness of the environment remains a problem,
and it only gets bigger.
But Australia not only feeds itself,
it manages to supply 20 per cent of all global food exports.
This is testament to the ingenuity and resilience
of its farmers and scientists over two centuries.
But at least the prosperity of the place was guaranteed, right?
The mineral wealth lying just below the ground
has given us a foolproof way of paying for high living standards, surely?
Not really. Coal, gas, oil, gold, copper, zinc, bauxite,
uranium and diamonds are valuable commodities.
But, in the long story of humankind, it is normal
that resource-rich societies end up failures. Paradoxically,
the apparent blessings of nature usually turn out to be a curse.
Not just most of the time, but virtually all the time. Resource wealth
usually comes with high inflation, extreme indebtedness, corruption
and civil war.
Professor Paul Stevens, from the University of Dundee in Scotland,
surveyed 52 resource-rich developing countries and found that
only four had managed to extract a real national benefit
from nature's bounty: Chile, Malaysia, Indonesia and Botswana.
That is a dismal record.
A large surge of money gushing into a fragile state
will almost always break it, not make it.
Only a handful of truly resource-rich nations have made it
all the way through the obstacle course to become
First World countries:
the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
(Norway sits atop a gusher of oil, but it was rich before
it found the black gold in the 1960s.)
The common Anglo origins of these successful countries hint at
one of the explanations for their success. The neo-Britains imported
a ready-made set of helpful habits and institutions -
a concept of citizens' rights protected in the common law,
the rudiments of parliamentary democracy, an independent judiciary,
the right to private property, a strong work ethic and the structures
for capitalist risk-taking.
And, in starting afresh, these new societies also managed to
leave behind some of the worst aspects of their colonial mother.
We shrugged off the ruinous British class system,
developing an aristocracy of merit rather than rule by
an entitled idiocy.
Egalitarianism is a deep well of national strength.
This constellation of forces created strong states
that were able to extract vast natural wealth
without destroying their society and their economies in the process.
Yet even the few societies, like Australia's,
that managed to build a successful country
in a resource-rich land remain under constant threat
from man-made economic disaster.
The US is a case in point. Apparently unassailable only a decade ago,
it is now an enfeebled giant. US unemployment stands at 10 per cent,
against Australia's 5.7 per cent.
Child poverty in America was 20 per cent
even before the recession, against 12 per cent in Australia.
America maintains a mighty war machine
that it can finance only at the discretion of
the Communist Party of China.
The US President may be commander in chief,
but he wields a military on hire-purchase.
Or New Zealand, which discovered last year
that it was so indebted to the world that it had
effectively lost sovereign control of its fiscal policy.
So just when it needed to be able to stimulate growth,
in the midst of a global recession, it found it could not.
In sum, a bounty of resources is neither a sufficient condition
nor even a necessary condition of national wealth.
Indeed, if we relied on minerals and energy alone,
we'd be a developing country. Mining and energy,
even in the midst of a commodities boom, accounted for
a tad less than 8 per cent of our total economy in 2006-07,
and about one-third of exports.
Australia did drift into a long, post-war economic malaise.
But the country snapped out of it, thanks to the
Hawke-Keating reforms and the Howard-Costello follow-through.
The status report for Project Australia is that,
however you measure it,
Australia is one of the richest countries in the world.
According to the most comprehensive measure,
the United Nations annual index of human development
that ranks 182 countries, Australia is second only to Norway
in enjoying the best living conditions available to the human species.
This index includes life expectancy, education and purchasing power.
If it incorporated climate, of course,
Norway would have to vacate the dais.
And Australia is not just one of the very richest,
but also one of the very fairest.
The Paris-based club of 30 rich democracies,
the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development,
reports that in the past few years the level of
income inequality in Australia fell below that of the OECD average
for the first time.
It turns out that John Howard and Peter Costello delivered
the closest thing to a socialist paradise that Australia has seen.
Who knew?
Opportunity abounds:
"Australia is one of the most socially mobile countries in the OECD.
What your parents earned when you were a child
has very little effect on your own earnings,"
the OECD reported last year.
Australians enjoy First World living standards,
but are as carefree as the most contented peoples of the Caribbean.
A British think tank, the New Economics Foundation,
this year rated Australians as the third happiest people in the world
after the citizens of Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.
The Brits themselves came in a glum 74th.
Is the place perfect? Of course not.
Aboriginal Australia is a parallel universe suffering
Third World conditions, for a start.
Then there's the problem of water and climate, the state of our hospitals,
the high cost of housing, a mind-numbing booze culture,
the rotten State Government of NSW
and, of course, there are the sharks.
But let's put our gripes in perspective.
We share a country that's one of
the safest and most stable on Earth.
People from around the world have
left behind ancient strife and anguish
to create a country of unsurpassed harmony and hope,
that offers wide-open opportunity for the ambitious
and a social safety net for those who fall by the wayside.
If there is a sweet spot
in human existence,
Australia, you're in it.

China discovers tomb
of ancient legendary ruler

Chinese archaeologists believe they have found
a nearly 1,800-year-old tomb belonging to
the legendary ruler Cao Cao,
who was known as a cruel tyrant but also
a cunning military strategist and poet.
The tomb is located in central Henan province, not far from the Yellow
River and near the city of Anyang, where Cao Cao ruled the Kingdom of
Wei from 208 to 220, when he died at age 65, the state China Daily
reported Monday.
"Excavation has been going on for nearly one year, and we'll come up
with further evidence," the paper quoted Guan Qiang of the State
Administration of Cultural Heritage as saying.
"But even based on what we've got, we can tell for sure that the mausoleum belongs to Cao Cao."
Numerous articles found in the tomb are inscribed as "personal
belongings frequently used by the King Wu of Wei," Cao Cao's posthumous
title, it said.
Archaeologists have found the remains of three people in the tomb -- a
male around 60 years of age, believed to be Cao Cao, a female of about
50 and a second woman between 20 and 25, thought to be the king's wife
and escort.
The tomb was discovered about a year ago,
but only became known to authorities
after stone tablets carrying inscriptions of
"King Wu of Wei"
were seized from alleged tomb raiders,
the report said.
So far archaeologists have recovered over 250 relics
from the tomb which covers an area of 740 square metres
(8,000 square feet), an area befitting a burial plot
for someone of Cao Cao's stature, it said.
During his rise to power during the waning years of the Han Dynasty,
Cao Cao became known as a clever yet cruel tyrant who was also a
military genius.
His exploits form an important aspect of the 14th century historical
novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," known as one of China's greatest
literary works and a publication that remains widely read today.
Cao Cao remains a mainstay in Chinese culture
and is a frequent character in Peking opera
and historical theatre.
He was most recently portrayed in
director John Woo's blockbusters
"Red Cliff" and "Red Cliff 2".
His poems continue to be taught
in schools throughout China.

AN ABORIGINAL Dreaming story
about a star crashing to earth
with a noise like thunder
has led to the discovery of
an ancient meteorite crater in central Australia.
A Sydney astronomer, Duane
Hamacher, found the bowl-shaped crater in Palm Valley, about 130
kilometres south-west of Alice Springs, by searching on Google Earth.
He was inspired to look there after learning
of traditional stories told
by the local Arrernte people about a star
that had fallen into a waterhole
called Puka in the valley.
Mr Hamacher, a PhD candidate at Macquarie University,
said that reality matching the Dreaming story
could be a case of pure chance. '
'But if so, it's an incredible coincidence,'' he said.
He is part of a team led by CSIRO astronomer Ray Norris
that is exploring the possibility that
Aborigines were the world's first astronomers.
Traditional Aboriginal wisdom about the heavens was impressive,
Mr Hamacher said.
''It is impossible to survive on a continent like this for 50,000 years
and not have an intimate knowledge of the natural world around you,
including the night sky,'' he said.
He searched historical records for Aboriginal stories
with references to comets, meteors and cosmic impacts,
and looked for matching astronomical events.
The Palm Valley crater, which the team proposes to name Puka,
was probably formed millions of years ago, so people could not
have witnessed the impact.

''But perhaps the Arrernte knew rocks fell out of the sky and maybe they
deduced that a large rock caused the big bowl-shaped crater,'' he said.
Another Arrernte Dreaming story about a large impact crater
called Gosses Bluff, which formed about 142 million years ago, ''
closely parallels the scientific explanation'', he said.
The crater, about 175 kilometres west of Alice Springs,
is known as Tnorala and considered a sacred place by the
Western Arrernte people. After spotting the Palm Valley crater
on the internet, Mr Hamacher visited the site with
two Macquarie University geophysicists and an astrophysicist.
''We found evidence of shocked quartz,
which is only produced when there is a substantial impact,''
Mr Hamacher said.
They also determined that the structure was bowl
shaped under the surface, which could not be explained by erosion.

the reports, but an investigation was launched into the matter on
Friday," government spokesman Steffen Seibert told a regular news
conference.
The BND or Bundesnachrichtendienst is currently headquartered
in Pullach, on the outskirts of Munich, but the decision was taken
following reunification to move it to Berlin.
Building in a former East German district of the capital began in 2006 and is scheduled for completion in 2014.
It is set to be one of the most expensive and hi-tech government structures in Germany.

Funny coming from someone who now wants to nit pick over
how squiggly lines are formed, being proof of God, but still
can't comprehend some very basic basics.
