in the Noosa River is now up for rent.

In July, the cashed-up cohorts
opened their heart-shaped island
on the Noosa River to the public.
With a minimum of eight people (and a spare eight grand)
or a maximum party of 22 (and a not inconsiderable $14,990),
the island and its 11-room retreat is yours for a night.
The cost includes staff, chef and everything you can eat; alcohol is extra.
Makepeace Island is one of Australia's
most expensive single-ticket accommodations.
Once called Pig Island, the 10-hectare patch of gum trees and mangroves
sits in the broad, estuarine waters of the Noosa River.
Small fishing boats buzz past it and from certain vantage points you can see riverbank holiday homes and even the busy car-ferry that lies upriver.
The island has been occupied by a reclusive old woman
named "Shotgun Hannah" Makepeace, coteries of hippies and an artist.
In 2003, the Virgin boss and the then-chief executive of Virgin Blue
bought the island and, after much argy-bargy with the council,
spent more than $7 million importing the fabric (and in some cases, actual pieces)
of a Balinese resort.
Yes, a Balinese resort.
When you step off the 10-minute boat ride from Noosa Marina,
your mental pictures of the billionaire's hideaway are torn to shreds:
no Bond villain's Piz Gloria, no high-tech Taj Mahal,
no glass edifice that lifts from the mangroves at a touch of button.
I'm surprised because it is so very familiar.
There are thatched roofs, great slabs of hardwood and lofty coconut palms.
There is a two-storey, open-sided wantilan (communal space) that looks down on
a lagoon pool of the purest china blue. And all about are signature
Balinese touches putting the Nusa Dua into Noosa Queensland, including
stone Hindu sculptures, brightly coloured silks and Javanese day beds.
I'm doubly surprised because - well, how to put this politely?
If an Australian entrepreneur had gone to Branson and said,
"I'm building a $7-million resort in the Lake District and the Brits are
going to love it because it's in the style of a Majorcan hacienda,"
I suspect he might have had something to say.
The billionaire co-owner says Makepeace is a paean to the good times
the owners have enjoyed in lives past. But is it a misstep?
It's hard to say because when they built it they weren't second-guessing
a market, they were building a getaway for themselves and senior Virgin
employees.
As Branson said: "We've never run our properties like a hotel.
You run them like you're coming to somebody's home -
which is effectively what [this] is . . . The advantage of an island is
you can party as hard as you like without complaints from the neighbours."
So they wanted a place to kick back and play up - and clearly it has been used for such. Instead of an uptight shimmery-shiny resort, this place has been lived in and pre-loved.
It's languid, open, comfortable -
in fact, before you know it,
Makepeace is working some sly magic.
The breezy Balinese structures, many located at the end of elevated timber walkways,
lend themselves perfectly to the semi-tropical climes.
The best-placed Makepeace residents find themselves in either Branson's Bali House
(a four-room building with separate decks and en suites) or Godfrey's smaller,
elegant two-room retreat. Some central accommodation loses out on the riverine views
but the fixtures are all showpiece quality with lots of polished stone, carved wood and
some funky bathroom amenities.
Yes, there's a paucity of excess (except perhaps for the extraordinary bath in Godfrey's bure, hand-hewn from a solid boulder), but there's nothing missing that the hedonist should need: egg-shaped wicker lounges suspended over the pool, a hardwood bar that is longer
than an airport runway and four-poster beds with copies of the Kama Sutra on bedside tables. Don't worry, it is more wry humour than tacky tantric, though it soon becomes clear that this was a bolthole designed to be the antidote to the boardroom.
Naturally, there's the tennis court, the theatre room and the 15-person spa, but there's also the "aircraft carrier". It's a steel barge (presumably left over from the build) that is loaded up with music, booze, food and a fire pit before dutifully chugging around the starlit island while guests do some water-borne partying.
Barge shenanigans aside, it is all well screened by vegetation and, as your coterie gets into the swing of indulging and being indulged, you soon forget that the real world isn't terribly far away.
The island staff are, for want of a better word, brilliant. They're affable, accessible and imbued with Queensland outdoorsiness: ask them about the fishing and they know exactly where to drop a line or trap a mud crab. They have a knack for being in the right place holding the right bottle at the right time.
The manager, Nick Jones, is also the resort chef and he acquits himself superbly on my visit, completely unfazed by cooking for a dozen visitors (not to mention the knight of the Virgin realm, who was hosting at the time), with big Queensland ocean fish being given some
subtle Asian treatment.
Guests can easily avail themselves of local attractions, including the restaurants of Noosa Heads or the seemingly endless sand highway north to Fraser Island. But given the clientele being pitched to, one suspects marlin fishing and diving the southern extent of the
Great Barrier Reef will also be in demand.
At the end of the day - indeed, at the end of an $8000 day - there is a simple truth that will probably become evident to those who occupy Makepeace. Whether you're a billionaire, multimillionaire or a plain old millionaire, you don't need a Bond villain's hideaway to
unwind; a little well-tailored privacy on an island you can call your own will do just fine.

THE following text is a letter
from US President Barack Obama
to Prime Minister Julia Gillard
expressing America's appreciation
for Australia's support on September 11
and the decade since.
Dear Prime Minister,
As we approach the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks,
I want to take this opportunity to express our enduring appreciation
for the close partnership and support we have received from Australia
on that fateful day and in the decade since.
Australia's support on September 11, 2001, and in the days after was extraordinary.
Prime Minister Howard was in Washington on September 11,
preparing to address a Joint Session of Congress on the occasion of
the 50th anniversary of our security alliance.
While his address had to be postponed, his heartfelt words of support and sympathy
on that day, and in the days and weeks that followed, eloquently described the depth
of the United States-Australian partnership.
Australia's quick declaration that these attacks were an assault on the values
and freedoms shared by our two countries comforted us; your invocation of
Article IV of the ANZUS Treaty strengthened our resolve to prevail over this menace.
Americans were moved by the expressions of sympathy from so many Australians citizens, and we shared your grief at the loss of 11 Australians in the September 11 attacks.
In the decade since the attacks, we have had no more steadfast partner than Australia
in our effort to defeat terrorists in Afghanistan, in Bali, in the Middle East, and in
Southeast Asia.
Australia's robust cooperation in these efforts has made a tremendous contribution
to achieving the alliance goals we share, and has won the lasting affection and
gratitude of Americans.
As the United States and Australia stand on the cusp of our alliance's seventh decade,
I assure you I will continue to do everything I can to work with you to deepen that partnership, to ensure the security of our nations and our citizens, not

I could tell there was going to be something,
in, This, Very Important, Very Official, HISTORIC
Letter, that no one dare put their name to.
Like that LAST LINE "typo", of "Valley Girl Speak",
"I assure you...NOT!...and in the future. ..."
As the United States and Australia
stand on the cusp of our alliance's seventh decade,
I assure you I will continue to do everything I can
to work with you to deepen that partnership,
to ensure the security of our nations
and our citizens, not

And as anyone who's studied
"tintin's" CODE SPEAK knows, CHANGING JUST ONE,
little letter, MAKES A WHOLE MESS of Difference.
What IS, becomes, what IS BEING SAID.

Well, someone didn't like that last post...yet another major hack attack, of denying internet service to all 3 computers running in this house, while, VIA THE INTERNET, THAT WAS CONNECTED AND RUNNING, all 3 computers were being 'run through'. The timing worked for me though...and showed those who need to know, what they need to know...those that are trusted, are not to be trusted. And yet again, I was proven to know, when I needed to know, what I couldn't know, without the revealing truth of God's Word.

when she pulled off a stunning upset over American
Serena Williams at today's US Open final.
Stosur produced the match of her life
against a nervous Williams to
win 6-2 6-3
in one hour and 13 minutes
in front of 23,000 people
on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

HE may be
Australia's only winner of the Tour de France,
but plans to widen a road in honour of Cadel Evans
have caused anger in his home town.
Residents in Barwon Heads fear that the changes to
Thirteenth Beach Road will destroy sand dunes and threaten wildlife,
but cyclists say the road is too narrow and potentially fatal.
Evans lives and rides in the Victorian town,
20 kilometres south of Geelong, when he is not overseas.
A local environmentalist, Elissa Ashton-Smith, estimated at least
two hectares of roadside dunes would be lost if proposed bike lanes
were built along the six-kilometre road.
Ms Ashton-Smith said some dunes held national conservation significance.
''It means they're quite rare and at threat of becoming extinct because
there's so little left.'' Widening the road would carve into vegetation and dunes
that are home to echidnas, reptiles and native birds, she said.
But local cyclists believe a rider could die
unless urgent safety upgrades are made.
A proposal by Bike Safe recommends adding bicycle
lanes and changing the road's name to Cadel Way.
The City of Greater Geelong estimates widening the road
by three metres would cost at least $4 million,
according to minutes from a Barwon Coast
committee management meeting last month.

The committee, appointed by the state government,

coalition will consider changes to migration laws being put forward by
Labor following the High Court decision.
The High Court quashed the government's agreement with Malaysia to
swap 800 people who arrive by boat for 4000 processed refugees.
The court decision also threw into doubt all forms of offshore processing,
including the coalition's preferred option of reopening the
Australian-funded Nauru facility.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard today gained cabinet and caucus support for changes to migration laws to erase legal doubt about the Malaysia deal and offshore processing.
Mr Abbott said in a statement that while the coalition would consider the legislation, the prime minister had come up with ''a legislative excuse to implement an already failed and flawed policy''.
''The Malaysian people swap is a proven policy failure. Nauru is a proven policy success,'' he said in a statement.

the reintroduction of temporary protection visas and a willingness to
turn boats around where it is safe to do so would stop the boats.
''Any legislation that comes forward will be considered in the usual way,'' he said.
Earlier, Julia Gillard demanded Tony Abbott support her government’s bid to
change migration laws to enable offshore processing of asylum seekers.
She won a two-and-a-half hour debate inside the Labor party to change the Migration Act.
If accepted by Parliament, it will open the way for the Government to revive its plan to send 800 asylum seekers to Malaysia.
After a Cabinet meeting this morning, Ms Gillard sought the approval of all Labor MPs to change the law after the High Court struck down the Malaysian people-swap deal.
The changes would give the Immigration Minister the power to send asylum seekers to a third country and remove the legal uncertainty caused by the High Court ruling.
It is understood the proposed changes are not country specific, which means they would allow an Abbott Government to send people to Nauru, although Ms Gillard said she was convinced that option did not work.
The Prime Minister said changing laws would be in Australia’s best interests.
She said her government wanted to revive the Malaysian people swap deal, but by making “broad” changes to the Migration Act it would also allow a future government to implement different border protection policies.
The Prime Minister said it was important to send the "maximum message of deterrence'' to people smugglers.
"The government has determined that it will bring to the Parliament amendments to the Migration Act that enable the government to make the decisions necessary to have asylum seekers transferred and processed in third countries,” Ms Gillard said.
"These amendments will be broad in nature, they will enable the government of the day to design and implement its best solution.''
Ms Gillard said the government had already decided what its solution would involve.
"The best solution from our point of view is the arrangement in Malaysia, with a complementary centre in PNG,'' she said.
"We are determined to pursue bringing to life the arrangement that we have made with Malaysia.”
The Prime Minister said Opposition Leader Tony Abbott should stick to his words he put on the public record last week.
“The leader of the Opposition said last Monday… ‘I think that our country
should have the best border protection policy that the government of the
day thinks it needs’.
“The amendments that will be brough to the Parliament will reflect those words.”
“I am not asking Mr Abbott to agree with us on Malaysia… I am not asking him to do anything more than honour those words.”
Law amendments could be introduced to Parliament as early as next week.

Left wing Senator Doug Cameron formally tried to amend Ms Gillard’s motion to stop offshore processing. He was backed by Fremantle MP Melissa Parke and Victorian Senator Gavin Marshall.
About 23 MPs spoke during the debate. About half a dozen were against the PM’s position.
A key part of the debate was about interpreting whether Labor’s party platform would allow the decision.
MPs backing the PM said they were concerned ending offshore processing
would put at risk support for the orderly migration program.
Senator Cameron’s motion was defeated on the voices and Ms Gillard’s position was accepted on the voices.
The win for the PM comes as a new Nielsen poll released today shows Labor would get a 15-point boost to its primary vote if it switched from Ms Gillard back to Kevin Rudd.
The poll found 44 per cent of voters want Mr Rudd as Labor leader compared with
19 per cent for Ms Gillard.
About 10 per cent prefer Defence Minister Stephen Smith with 8 per cent support for Simon Crean.
About 5 per cent backed Bill Shorten with 4 per cent for Greg Combet.
The poll, which will add to leadership speculation, shows Labor's poor
primary vote of 27 per cent under Ms Gillard would leap to 42 per cent
under Mr Rudd.
It would take Labor's election-losing two-party vote of 42-58 per cent to a possible election winning 52-48 per cent.
Some senior Labor figures recently floated the idea of a return to Mr Rudd or a switch to Mr Smith.
But Mr Smith told ABC's Insiders there was "no enthusiasm'' to revisit the leadership and Ms Gillard would lead Labor to the 2013 election.
Mr Rudd, who had heart surgery last month, visits his doctor today to find out if he is able to go with Mr Smith to San Francisco on Wednesday for talks with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Tomorrow the Government will push ahead with
introducing its controversial carbon tax plan to Parliament.
A vote is not expected until next month.
Treasurer Wayne Swan said a price on carbon was
"the next step forward on (the) economic reform road''.

THE White House has confirmed Barack Obama will visit
Australia in November, with hopes the itinerary will include the
President's Cup golf tournament in Melbourne.
The visit, at the invitation of Prime Minister Julia Gillard, will
mark the 60th anniversary of the security alliance between the US,
Australia and New Zealand.
Obama had plans to travel to Australia last year,
but the trip was cancelled twice - once so Obama could stay
in Washington to lobby for his health care overhaul
and a second time because of the devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
The November visit will take place during a trip that includes Obama's
duties as host of the Asia Pacific Cooperation (APEC) forum in Hawaii
and an East Asia summit in Bali, Indonesia.
"Australia is one of the United States' closest allies and our troops have served together
bravely in Afghanistan and conflict zones throughout the world,'' a White House statement said.

co-operation in trade, growth and jobs, the statement said.
"The President looks forward to consulting closely with the Prime Minister on
global and regional issues in preparation for the East Asia Summit to

without saying where he would go.
It is unclear whether his schedule will allow Mr Obama, who is a keen

Ms Gillard visited the White House in March and played a game of kick to kick
with an Aussie rules footy in the Oval Office.
They also sparred over Australia's iconic Vegemite.
Gillard also made an address to a joint session of the US Congress and the two leaders visited a Washington-area school.
Asked by Australian journalists about a future trip to Australia in March,
Obama reminisced how he had visited with his late mother as an eight-year-old.
"I had a wonderful time, everybody treated me wonderfully
and I hope I get a chance to get back there soon,'' he said.
His visit would be a vote of confidence in Prime Minister Julia Gillard and

THE White House has confirmed Barack Obama will visit
Australia in November, with hopes the itinerary will include the
President's Cup golf tournament in Melbourne.
The visit, at the invitation of Prime Minister Julia Gillard, will
mark the 60th anniversary of the security alliance between the US,
Australia and New Zealand.
Obama had plans to travel to Australia last year,
but the trip was cancelled twice - once so Obama could stay
in Washington to lobby for his health care overhaul
and a second time because of the devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
The November visit will take place during a trip that includes Obama's
duties as host of the Asia Pacific Cooperation (APEC) forum in Hawaii
and an East Asia summit in Bali, Indonesia.
"Australia is one of the United States' closest allies and our troops have served together
bravely in Afghanistan and conflict zones throughout the world,'' a White House statement said.

two leaders will be able to build on that summit's agenda and expand
co-operation in trade, growth and jobs, the statement said.
"The President looks forward to consulting closely with the Prime Minister on
global and regional issues in preparation for the East Asia Summit to
be held later that week in Bali, Indonesia,'' the statement said.
Obama will be in Australia on November 16 and 17, the White House said,
without saying where he would go.
It is unclear whether his schedule will allow Mr Obama, who is a keen
golfer, to attend the President's Cup golf tournament in Melbourne,
where the top US players take on a team from the rest of the world.
Ms Gillard visited the White House in March and played a game of kick to kick
with an Aussie rules footy in the Oval Office.
They also sparred over Australia's iconic Vegemite.
Gillard also made an address to a joint session of the US Congress and the two leaders visited a Washington-area school.
Asked by Australian journalists about a future trip to Australia in March,
Obama reminisced how he had visited with his late mother as an eight-year-old.
"I had a wonderful time, everybody treated me wonderfully
and I hope I get a chance to get back there soon,'' he said.

The wild birds are being taught by pet birds
that have escaped or been released by their owners
and joined the flocks.
"We have had people call us thinking they are going mad
or had something put into their drink because they've
gone out to look at the flock of birds in their backyard
and all the birds have been saying something like:
'Who's a pretty boy then'?"
the Australian Museum's naturalist, Martyn Robinson, said yesterday.
Mr Robinson said Sydney was home to large numbers of
galahs, sulphur-crested cockatoos and corellas that
had fled New South Wales' far west during the decade-long drought.
"They've decided to stay and even begun to breed in the city,
and if a pet bird of their species escapes their cage or is released
because their owner's moving or whatever, they naturally join the wild flocks," he said.

and very social and communication and
contact is important between them.
"So the pet bird begins to say things it's been taught by its owner
and the rest of the flock learns and starts speaking too,
to mimic the pet bird," Mr Robinson said.
"I just hope a pet that's been taught dirty words doesn't join a flock."
Mr Robinson said all three species were noted for
their ability to learn behaviour rather than rely on innate traits.

A MELBOURNE auction house is hoping for a gold rush as the possibly
largest nugget unearthed in Victoria in more than 60 years goes on sale.
Auctioneer Charles Leski said the 600 gram Bealiba Nugget,
discovered near the north-west Victoria country town in 1957, would
fetch up to $40,000 under the hammer, if not more.
"This size is extremely rare and I don't think
a larger nugget has been found in Victoria since then,'' Mr Leski said.
The nugget, about 15cm long, was dug from a river bed 100 years after the
Victorian Gold rush hit Mt Bealiba, and has remained in a private
collection in the same condition is was unearthed in ever since.
"A find like this, even at the height of the gold rush, was extremely rare," Mr Leski said.
He said while
there were larger nuggets found in Victoria,
including The Welcome Stranger
which weighed in at a massive 73kg, the size and value
of The Bealiba Nugget put it in easy reach of the average person.
He said the vulnerability of the stock market meant interest in trading gold had boosted.
"With gold fever at an all-time high internationally, sale of The Bealiba
Nugget will revive the fantasy of owning a big chunk of the favourite
measure of prosperity," Mr Leski said.
He said the sale of the nugget was expected to bring in
between $35,000 and $40,000 but anticipated it could go higher.
"I'd be surprised if it only brings in the gold value," he said.

DENMARK'S Crown Princess Mary will introduce her twins, Prince
Vincent and Princess Josephine, to Australia in November - her first

The mother of four and Crown Prince Frederik will visit Melbourne,
Sydney and Canberra from November 19 to 26 as guests of the Australian
Government.
And though there is no mention of Princess Mary's children in the official
announcement, she is expected to combine the business of her trip with
a visit to Hobart to introduce the twins to her home town.

Princess Mary bucked modern obstetric tradition by giving birth to the twins
naturally rather than via caesarean. Doctors described the births as
"natural and normal", though Princess Josephine arrived in breech position.
Earlier this year, Mary's sister-in-law Leanne Donaldson (wife of her brother John)
said they were looking forward to the twins' first visit to Australia.
The twins were each christened with four names:

The group, which runs airports and builds highways in India, said the coal was needed

agreed to pay more than $1 billion for a part of her mining empire.
The company on the weekend revealed it was raising the cash needed
to take a stake in the three Queensland coal mines along with a railway
line and port projects owned by Ms Rinehart's Hancock Prospecting.
The group, which runs airports and builds highways in India, said the coal was needed
for new power plants.

Frustrated to the point of doing something stupid,I decided to take my chances with Ballarat Police,close to where Suzy lives,she being the "BUM" part of town,Wendouree West,known for its bakeries and cock gobbling glory holes of Hollioke Park.
...I have the phone bill here to prove I rang on a Saturday.
Anyway,not expecting to get anywhere,especially,if I gave away my relationship with NSW Police,to be rather strained at best.
I was surprised to have my queries answered by a very professional and seasoned officer,who knew the law and history of Victoria and Ballarat.
...After describing my complaint,being accused as a babyfucker and goat abuser and so has many others by this nutter.I mentioned Suzy's ex-husband,Bill Ryan,a serving member?,remember,this is Suzy data,it could be made up at the bottom of a Gin bottle.

The officer then took an interest and began looking for this Bill Ryan.I said to the officer,she'd be easy to remember,her car was blown up by bombing in her driveway and herself has been beaten up twice and put in a hospital.I could hear the keyboard,thumping away in the background,he's researching the data as I speak.He had a chuckle and said,there has'nt been a car-bombing in the state of Victoria for 30 years and that was the Russell St bombing.
