Many people, meeting Aziraphale for the first time, formed three
impressions: that he was English, that he was intelligent, and that he was
gayer than a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxide.

Kids! Bringing about Armageddon can be dangerous. Do not attempt it in
your home.

"You can't second-guess ineffability, I always say."

-- (Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

He was currently wondering vaguely who Moey and Chandon were.

(Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

He'd been particularly pleased with Manchester.

-- Crowley contemplating his achievements
(Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

The only time Crowley had bought petrol was once in 1967, to get the free
James Bond bullet-hole-in-the-windscreen transfers, which he rather fancied
at the time.

-- (Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

He wondered reflectively what would happen if you asked a nun where the
Gents was. Probably the Pope sent you a sharp note or something.

-- (Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

Humans suffering from a conflict of signals aren't the best people to be
holding guns, especially when they've just witnessed a natural childbirth,
which definitely looked an un-American way of bringing new citizens into
the world.

-- (Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

Of course he was all in favour of Armageddon in general terms.

"You see a wile, you thwart. Am I right?"

-- Crowley the demon and Aziraphale the angel in conversation

On those occasions when the angel managed to get his mind into the
twentieth century, it always gravitated to 1950.

"Art thou a witch, viva espana?"

-- The Spanish Inquisition (Tadfield version) in action
(Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

Anathema didn't only believe in ley-lines, but in seals, whales, bicycles,
rainforests, whole grain in loves, recycled paper, white South Africans out
of South Africa, and Americans out of practically everywhere down to and
including Long Island.

-- (Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

English Burger Lords managed to take any American fast food virtues (the
speed with which your food was delivered, for example) and carefully remove
them; your food arrived after half an hour, at room temperature, and it was
only because of the strip of warm lettuce between them that you could
distinguish the burger from the bun. The Burger Lord pathfinder salesmen
had been shot 25 minutes after setting foot in France.

Shadwell hated all southerners and, by inference, was standing at the

DON'T THINK OF IT AS DYING, said Death. JUST THINK OF IT AS LEAVING

"Jesus won't cut you off before you're through
With him you won't never get a crossed line,
And when your bill comes it'll all be properly itemised
He's the telephone repairman on the switchboard of my life.

The phone line to the saviour's always free of interference
He's in at any hour, day or night
And when you call J-E-S-U-S you always call toll-free
He's the telephone repairman on the switchboard of my life."

- "ALL YOU CAN HOPE FOR IS THE MERCY OF HELL."
- "Yeah?"
- "JUST OUR LITTLE JOKE."
- "Ngk," said Crowley.

-- Crowley in conversation with his superiors
(Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

Death and Famine and War and Pollution continued biking towards Tadfield.

Along with the standard computer warranty agreement which said that if the
machine 1) didn't work, 2) didn't do what the expensive advertisement said,
3) electrocuted the immediate neighbourhood, 4) and in fact failed entirely
to be inside the expensive box when you opened it, this was expressly,
absolutely, implicitly and in no event the fault or responsibility of the
manufacturer, that the purchaser should consider himself lucky to be
allowed to give his money to the manufacturer, and that any attempt to
treat what had just been paid for as the purchaser's own property would
result in the attentions of serious men with menacing briefcases and very
thin watches.

-- (Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

Crowley had been extremely impressed with the warranties offered by the
computer industry, and had in fact sent a bundle Below to the department
that drew up the Immortal Soul agreements, with a yellow memo form attached
just saying: "Learn, guys."

-- Crowley is a demon, in case you don't know
(Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

R. P. Tyler was not, however, satisfied simply with being vouchsafed the
difference between right and wrong. He felt it his bounden duty to tell the world.

-- (Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

"This isn't how I imagined it, chaps," said War. "I haven't been waiting
for thousands of years just to fiddle around with bits of wire. It's not
what you'd call dramatic. Albrecht Duerer didn't waste his time doing
woodcuts of the Four Button-Pressers of the Apocalypse, I do know that."

-- Armageddon delayed by technical difficulties
(Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

"I don't see why it matters what is written. Not when it's about people.
It can always be crossed out."

-- (Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

In the Beginning

It was a nice day.

-- (Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

If you take the small view, the universe is just something small and round,
like those water-filled balls which produce a miniature snowstorm when you
shake them. Although, unless the ineffable plan is a lot more ineffable
than it's given credit for, it does not have a large plastic snowman at the
bottom.

-- (Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

- "You're Hells Angels, then? What chapter are you from?"
- REVELATIONS, CHAPTER SIX.

-- Death in conversation with a biker
(Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

The lorry blocked the road. And the corrugated iron blocked the road. And a
thirty-foot-high pile of fish blocked the road. It was one of the most
effectively blocked roads the sergeant had ever seen.

Crowley was in Hell's bad books. Not that Hell has any other kind.

-- (Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

God does not play dice with the universe: He plays an ineffable game of His
own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the
other players [i.e. everybody], to being involved in an obscure and complex
variant of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infinite
stakes, with a Dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the
time
.

-- (Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

It wasn't a dark and stormy night.
It should have been, but there's the weather for you. For every mad
scientist who's had a convenient thunderstorm just on the night his Great
Work is complete and lying on the slab, there have been dozens who've sat
around aimlessly under the peaceful stars while Igor clocks up the
overtime.

-- (Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

Many phenomena - wars, plagues, sudden audits - have been advanced as
evidence for the hidden hand of Satan in the affairs of Man, but whenever
students of demonology get together the M25 London orbital motorway is
generally agreed to be among the top contenders for exhibit A.

Sister Mary headed through the night-time hospital with the Adversary,
Destroyer of Kings, Angel of the Bottomless Pit, Great Beast that is called
Dragon, Prince of This World, Father of Lies, Spawn of Satan and Lord of
Darkness safely in her arms. She found a bassinet and laid him down in it.
He gurgled. She gave him a tickle.

-- The antichrist is born

Mr Young hadn't had to quiet a screaming baby for years. He'd never been
much good at it to start with. He'd always respected Sir Winston Churchill,
and patting small versions of him on the bottom had always seemed
ungracious.

The ducks in St James's Park are so used to being fed bread by secret
agents meeting clandestinely that they have developed their own Pavlovian
reaction. Put a St James's Park duck in a laboratory cage and show it a
picture of two men -- one usually wearing a coat with a fur collar, the
other something sombre with a scarf -- and it'll look up expectantly.

A man threw himself through the window, a knife between his teeth, a
Kalashnikov automatic rifle in one hand, a grenade in the other. "I glaim
gis oteg in der gaing og der --" he paused. He tooke the knife out of his
teeth and began again.

-- (Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

- "Surely you have considered terrorist activity?"
There was another pause. Then the spokesman said, in the quiet tones of
someone who has had enough and who is going to quit after this and raise
chickens somewhere, "Yes, I suppose we must. All we need to do is find some
terrorists who are capable of taking an entire nuclear reactor out of its
can while it's running and without anyone noticing. It weighs about a
thousand tons and is forty feet high. So they'll be quite strong
terrorists. Perhaps you'd like to ring them up, sir, and ask them questions
in that supercilious, accusatory way of yours."

-- The BBC interviews a nuclear spokesperson
(Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

Jaime had never realised that trees made a sound when they grew, and no-one
else had realised it either, because the sound is made over hundreds of
years in waves of twenty-four hours from peak to peak. Speed it up, and
the sound a tree makes is vrooom.

-- (Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

... walking like a man carrying a thermos flask of something that might
cause, if he dropped it or even thought about dropping it, the sort of
explosion that impels grey-beards to make statements like "And where this

-- Crowley gets out the Holy Water
(Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

She'd stopped reading the kind of women's magazine that talked about
romance and knitting and started reading the kind of women's magazine that
talked about orgasms, but apart from making a mental note to have one if
ever the occasion presented itself she dismissed them as only romance and
knitting in a new form.

+ [p. 20] "'The crowning of the Low King,' said Carrot."

Resonates with the semi-mythical High Kings of Ireland and Britain in our
world's history, who ruled over autonomous lesser kingdoms. As Dwarf
kingdoms are underground, with the most important bits being deepest, it
makes sense for their king of kings to be set under his subjects,
rather than above.

+ [p. 21] "'[...] Uberwald remains a mystery inside a riddle wrapped in an
enigma.'"

A slight paraphrase of what Churchill originally said about Russia. See
also the annotation for p. 176/133 of Men At Arms
.

+ [p. 28] "'The Scone of Stone. A replica, of course.'"

The Stone of Scone, aka The Stone of Destiny, aka Jacob's Pillow or
Pillar, is the coronation stone that Scottish kings were crowned on. The
stone was moved to England by Edward I after he defeated the Scots in
1296, and has since then been part of the English monarchy's coronation
chair (except for the 4 months after Christmas Day 1950, when the Stone
was stolen by Scots Nationalists before being recovered at Arbroath Abbey
on April 11, 1951).

Currently, the Stone (although rumours of it being a fake one abound) is
"on loan" to Scotland, and can be seen in Edinburgh Castle.

+ [p. 29] "'[...] all the Low Kings have done that ever since B'hrian
Bloodaxe, fifteen hundred years ago.'"

Brian Boru (c.940-1014) was the most famous of the Irish High Kings.

Brian Bloodaxe, on the other hand, was the name of a platforms 'n ladders
style computer game for the Sinclair Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC,
etc. in the mid-1980s.

+ [p. 39] "[...] Ping said, 'It's a dialect word meaning "watermeadow",
sir.'"

According to Terry, 'ping' is in fact a Cornish dialect word meaning
'watermeadow'.

+ [p. 42] "'They act as if B'hrian Bloodaxe was still alive. That's why we
call them drudak'ak.'"

Echoes of Chassidic Jews, the Amish, or basically any traditional,
ultra-orthodox movement in Roundworld religions.

+ [p. 49] "'Inigo Skimmer, sir. Mhm-mhm.'"

People tried to read a reference to The Princess Bride's Inigo Montoya
character in the name, but Terry said:

"Inigo is just a name. So is Skimmer. It's not an intentional reference
to anything. [...] if you are a certain age, were brought up in the UK
and were taught history in a certain way, you recalled Inigo Jones as a
famous 17th Century architect -- mostly remembered because he had a
memorable name."

+ [p. 56] "'Very fast coffee. I rather think you will like it.'"

Espresso. Duh.

+ [p. 60] "The first page showed the crest of the Unholy Empire [...]"

Shades of both Holy Russia and the Holy Roman Empire.

Tsar Ivan "the Terrible" nailed some visiting Turkish ambassadors'
turbans to their heads when he felt they did not show him the proper
respect.

(But the same story is also told of Vlad 'Dracula': supposedly, the
Venetian ambassadors failed to take their skullcaps off before him,
explaining that they had special dispensation saying that they were
allowed to keep their heads covered even in the presence of the Pope,
whereupon Uncle Vlad had the caps nailed to their heads.)

+ [p. 60] "The crest was altogether too florid for Vimes's taste, and was
dominated by a double-headed bat."

The coat of arms of the Russian royal family, the Romanovs, sported the
black double-headed eagle, which also crops up in different colours in
other Eastern European heraldry, such as the Austria-Hungary coat of
arms. It also crops up (very batlike -- black on red) in the Albanian
flag.

Apparently the double-headed eagle specifically came to symbolise
Imperial power in heraldry, as opposed to the single-headed eagles, which
were more generally used for conventional royalty and kingdoms in that
area of the world.

Going back further in time, the Holy Roman Empire (see the previous
annotation) also used a double-headed eagle in the 15th century.

+ [p. 61] "'Silver has not been mined in Uberwald since the Diet of Bugs in
AM 1880 [...]'"

The Diet of Worms (or Reichstag zu Worms as the Germans refer to it)
was a political council (influenced by the Roman Catholic church) that
took place in the town of Worms in 1521. It was during this session that
Martin Luther was called upon to defend his Reformist teachings against
Pope Leo X's threat of excommunication. When he refused to recant, he was
ordered to leave and declared to be an outlaw as per the Edict of Worms.

+ [p. 65] "[...] a production of Chicken Lake."

Chicken Lake -> Swan Lake.

+ [p. 66] "'And you shall have some corn, provided locally by Josiah
Frument and Sons [...]'"

'Frument' means grain (from the Latin 'frumentum'). Frumenty (porridge
made from wheat) was an important medieval and Renaissance peasant
staple.

+ [p. 86] "[...] he was making headway with the religious instruction of
the pigeons."

Overtones of St. Francis of Assisi, who famously preached to the birds.
See also the annotation for p. 68/40 of Good Omens
.

+ [p. 174] "'Sybil wants to go to take the waters at Bad Heisses Bad---"

"Heisses Bad" is German for Hot Bath.

+ [p. 226] "'How beautiful the snow is, sisters...'"

This whole section is a riff on Chekhov's 1901 play Three Sisters,
complete with Chekhovian misunderstandings and pauses.

+ [p. 227] "'If we moved to Bonk [...]'"

The three provincial sisters in the Chekhov play are always remembering
their past in Moscow, but only the younger sister is the one with the
idea and desire to get out.

+ [p. 228] "'We have the gloomy and purposeless trousers of Uncle Vanya,'
said one, doubtfully."

Uncle Vanya is the other great Chekhov play. "Gloomy and purposeless"
sums up much Chekhovian drama quite accurately. The Russian word is
"toska" -- a sort of weary, faded ennui.

Uncle Vanya's trousers, interestingly enough, are not actually featured
in either of Chekhov's plays. As Terry pointed out on afp: "Well, yes.
Vimes got them."

+ [p. 253] "She'd called them 'sub-human'"

A literal translation of the Nazi term 'Untermensch', used to describe
all non-Aryan people.

+ [p. 255] "Blow the bloody doors off!"

Intentional or not, this piece has resonances with the UK classic cult
movie The Italian Job. One character is instructed by another to open a
safe and ends up blowing up the entire van, thus leading to the famous
line "You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!". Detritus
exhibits a similar amount of overkill here.

+ [p. 278] "'Ah, yes... "joy through strength".'"

Slogans like these resonate strongly with the slogans used by Nazi
Germany, such as "Arbeit Macht Frei" ("Work Brings Freedom"), infamously
used above the entrances of various Nazi concentration camps.

"Strength through Joy" ("Kraft durch Freude") was the name of a large
German National Socialist labour organisation, which provided affordable
leisure activities for its members such as concerts and cruises. Early
prototypes of the Volkswagen Beetle were in fact known as KdF-Wagen.

+ [p. 310] "'Is that why he's got human ears all over his back?' 'Early
experiment, thur.'"

There was a famous tissue engineering experiment done at the University
of Massachusetts (MIT), in which a biodegradable, ear-shaped scaffold was
impregnated with human cartilage cells, and then successfully grafted
onto the back of a mouse.

The resulting picture of the living mouse with the ear-like structure on
his back became very well known, although the story is often misconstrued
as involving genetic engineering or the transplantation of an actual
human ear, neither of which was the case.

Snuff by Terry Pratchett - review

Terry Pratchett's latest Discworld novel is as inventive and full of jokes as ever

Endlessly inventive storytelling: Terry Pratchett. Photograph: Eamonn Mccabe/The Guardian

Snuff has pleasant and innocent connotations – as an
old-fashioned stimulant to be kept in elegant boxes and snorted
gracefully in society. It also means arbitrary and unpleasant deaths, as
in snuff movies. Terry Pratchett's new novel turns on the connection between the two. Commander Vimes,
the Duke of Ankh, is persuaded, or forced, to go on a holiday to the
immense country mansion of his wife, Lady Sybil. Here he uncovers a
smuggling ring run by the local aristocrats, who are indeed the law
itself, as they are also the local magistrates. They are sending hard
drugs – slab and slide, which destroy the lives of young urban trolls –
to the cities by barge and boat. They also trade in living beings:
goblins, who are not classified as people. There are easy parallels to
be drawn with venal aspects of our own society: abuses of privilege,
fiddling of expenses, blind eyes turned. Vimes is his usual streetwise
and dogged self, rapidly learning how to make best use of the habits of
country pubs and improve the standards of village policing. Things move
along nicely, culminating in a breathtaking chase on a string of barges
being flung about on a river in spate called Old Treachery.

    1. FEET Of CLAY... - Page 2 Snuff

Pratchett has written several stories set on the Discworld in
which ill-treated, unconsidered species are described and explained and
admitted to society. In Feet of Clay, and Making Money, Miss Adora Belle Dearheart runs the Golem Trust, and golems develop from being clay automatons to beings with thoughts and language. In Unseen Academicals Mr Nutt is an orc,
a creature capable of great violence, who has become an erudite and
resourceful hero. In the early books, Captain Vimes was capable of easy
"speciesism" at the expense of the dwarves and trolls, gargoyles and
zombies who make up the Watch. Pratchett himself for several books
appeared to be hostile to vampires – but then he has a natural tendency
to imagine creatures intricately and charitably, so he gives us Mr Otto
von Chriek, a photographer who has taken the "black ribbon" vow of
teetotalism and has to be reconstituted with drops of blood every time
he explodes himself with his camera flash.
Elsewhere Vimes is persecuted by a green imp inside a "dis-organiser", a gift from his wife, and by a meticulous accountant called AE Pessimal,
sent by the Patrician to order his papers. Both of these initially
irritating beings are redeemed by the narrator: the imp turns out to be
really helpful, and the accountant performs heroic actions in a battle.
    In Snuff
it is the goblins who are the centre of attention: they are a dim,
feeble collection of creatures who smell very bad and live in a mess in
dark holes, stealing chickens and other things. They are not classified
as human, or sentient beings, and so can be bought, sold and enslaved.
Predictably and agreeably, Vimes takes up the cudgel on their behalf,
rescuing them from captivity. In this he is aided by a children's book
writer called Felicity Beedle, author of Melvin and the Enormous Boil, Daphne and the Nose Pickers and Gaston's Enormous Problem. Miss Beedle is the Adora Belle Dearheart of Snuff; she teaches the goblins to read and discovers an immense musical talent among them.
    There
is a great deal of interest in bodily fluids, excretions and excrement
in this book. Lady Sibyl explains to Vimes that Miss Beedle gets
children to read by writing about what they are interested in. Vimes
complains that they are "reading about poo and dead ducklings", and
Sibyl replies calmly that this is what children of a certain age care
about. In fact young Sam, their son, is showing signs of precocious
scientific skill by making a collection of various kinds of poo. The
goblins follow the religion of "Unggue",
which exhorts them to collect various bodily excretions – snot, ear
wax, toenail clippings – for which they make exquisitely designed
containers, "unggue pots" of various materials and shapes. One of
Pratchett's major gifts as a writer is the energy with which he always
tells you more than you expect – his description of the pots is clear
    and complicated.
One advantage of a continuing world full of
people and creatures is that they can develop in a leisurely way. The
character who does that in Snuff is Willikins, the Vimes's
butler, who when he first appeared was stiff and very formal, trying to
shave Vimes, who forbade him. In Jingo, one of the best of the series, he joins Lord Rust's
army to fight the Klatchians in the desert, and bites off an enemy
nose. In this book he turns out to have the same streetwise background
as his employer, and a collection of hidden and unusual weapons. He can
deal with the villain in ways his employer, inhibited by professional
    rules, cannot.
The villain in this book is a murderer of men and
goblins called Stratford, a person whose lack of conscience is a form of
stupidity, as with many other Pratchettian villains. (My favourite of
these is the appalling Mr Pin in The Truth,
who has an unerring eye for artistic masterpieces and snorts any
substance – such as scouring powder – he can find.) The real villain in Snuff is Lord Rust's son, the smuggler and slavemaker, who is arrogant and again stupid.
    Pratchett
is a master storyteller. He is endlessly inventive, even when telling a
routine kind of tale. He gives you more information and more story than
you need, just because he can, and this is completely satisfying. He is
a master of complex jokes, good bad jokes, good dreadful jokes and a
kind of insidious wisdom about human nature (and other forms of alien
nature). I think his mad footnotes are there because he can't stop his
mind whirring, and our whirring minds go with him. I read his books at a
gallop and then reread them every time I am ill or exhausted.

It is however, a threat to 'make future news' of murder,
to later be boasted of, 'as' 'predicted'.

And that's what 'cori' does: Plots deaths to revel in.

What 'cori' doesn't do, however, is admit to all 'their' failed plots.

So, good readers, on a mortal human level, take heed, and,
take heart, in knowing; the world is full of little people who
can and do take joy, in testifying to the Saving Grace of God.

AUSTRALIAN Diggers in Afghanistan are appalled and angered when they
hear their main role in Afghanistan dismissed as just "training the
Afghan army".

The dangers faced daily by the instructors out mentoring the Afghan

National Army were brutally highlighted yesterday when it emerged that
28-year-old Jared MacKinney had been killed in an intense three-hour
battle with Taliban insurgents during a joint patrol with Afghan troops
in the Deh Rawud green zone, west of the Australian base at Tarin Kowt.

He was the fourth Australian killed in Afghanistan in less than a
fortnight. But, more significantly, he was the eighth member of an
Australian training and mentoring team killed in action since they
Australian Defence Force began helping to train the Afghan army.

For those troops the war has become even more dangerous in recent months
as the Dutch troops who had the primary coalition role in Oruzgan pulled
out in August, to be replaced by a largely American force.

The Dutch withdrawal coincided with the Americans' make-or-break
surge against the Taliban, with a big troop build-up designed to clear
the insurgents out of the huge areas they control.

Raspal Khosa, an Afghan specialist from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute,
says the increased fighting is a consequence of US President Barack
Obama's revised "force uplift" strategy being put into effect by General David Petraeus.

Strong coalition contingents were sent into Kandahar and Helmand provinces in
particular, and Australians have takenpart in some fighting there.

The US strategy calls for the capture of what the generals call "key
terrain districts" and some of those lie in Oruzgan province,
Australia's main operational area.
These areas, 121 of them, have been picked because control there gives a marked advantage to whichever side has them.

They contain a population as well as economic and transport corridors. One
of these is Deh Rawud where this week's bitter fighting took place.

"The Taliban is obviously counterattacking to challenge this strategy,"
Khosa says. The insurgents have changed tactics and dramatically
increased the numbers of improvised bombs, which are responsible for the
largest number of military and civilian casualties in Afghanistan.

The Taliban aim is to influence what Khosa calls "the external centre of
gravity": public opinion in the West and the coalition's political will
to continue the fight.
The continuing deaths and the apparent lack of progress do have an effect.
Newspoll has marked dwindling public support for the war in Afghanistan after
many years of conflict and mounting casualties.

The proportion of Australians supporting the commitment of troops has
dropped since the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist
attacks, when two-thirds supported sending troops; in March last year,
nearly two-thirds were opposed.

The war has not been an election issue because it has the support of the main parties,
and Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott both favour Australia's continued involvement in the
war effort.

The Coalition was fairly gung-ho on the war for a time and pushed for Australia
to take over the lead role in Oruzgan when the Dutch pulled out. But since
the latest wave of casualties began -- and following briefings from ADF chief
Angus Houston -- Abbott has softened the rhetoric and adopted the view that
the size of the commitment is "about right".

The Dutch withdrawal has left a specific vacuum not easily filled by the Americans,
with their more aggressive operational style.
Debate about the Dutch departure concentrated largely on who would replace
the logistics they brought to Oruzgan: the command structure, medical facilities,
helicopters and fast jets that provide air support, and the long-range artillery that
can hit Taliban targets in the mountains around the joint coalition base at Tarin Kowt.
But the issue is more complex.

The Dutch proved adept at building relationships with the tribal people
scattered through Oruzgan's mountain valleys and Australia's troops have
benefited from that rapport.

For a long time Australians working with forces from The Netherlands
were inclined to complain about their lack of aggression and to suggest
that "Dutch" stood for "Don't Understand The Concept Here"
when it came to counter-insurgency warfare, or even that
Dutch troops were more inclined to hand out flowers than bullets.

But the Dutch have, as far as it can be done,
built up a deep relationship with the locals
that has helped them navigate the
treacherous complexities of tribal rivalries
.

After years of stalemate and a growing alarm that the NATO-led forces could lose
in Afghanistan, the thinking of top American commanders has swung to a position
much more closely aligned with that of the Dutch and a general realisation that
they can't kill their way to victory.

Australia has two main roles in Afghanistan. Its special forces contingent is one
of the most active in Afghanistan, hitting insurgent targets far from the coalition base
at Tarin Kowt and spending weeks at a time far "outside the wire".

Their operations are cloaked in secrecy and generally only become public
when something goes horribly wrong.

That happened in June, when three of Australia's most experienced special forces
soldiers were killed and seven wounded in a helicopter crash high in the mountains
where they headed out in pitch darkness on a raid against the Taliban.

The losses were the worst suffered by the Australian Army on operations since Vietnam,
and came just a fortnight after two Australian Army engineers, sappers Darren Smith
and Jacob Moerland, were killed by a roadside bomb.

To illustrate the intensity of the secret special forces operations, those soldiers were
veterans on their third tour of duty in Afghanistan and were involved a week before in
a successful attack on a Taliban stronghold that senior officers said tore the heart out of
a major insurgent group. The Australians were among 15 coalition troops aboard
the NATO helicopter.

The pilot, an American, was also killed and another crew member badly hurt when
the aircraft crashed at 3.39am Afghanistan time. Houston,
himself a decorated helicopter pilot, says flying conditions at the
time were extremely difficult, with a combination of very rugged
terrain, high altitude, high temperatures and heavily laden aircraft.

In Afghanistan, the Australian mentors operate often from rudimentary
stone forts called forward operating bases and patrol bases built in valleys that lie
in what was the Taliban heartland in Oruzgan.

Small groups of heavily armed Australians live, train and fight with the
Afghan troops they mentor, undertaking frequent joint patrols to keep
any insurgents in the area on the move, to uncover weapons caches and to
try to reassure the locals that they can confidently turn away the Taliban.

Coalition commanders say
the Afghan troops are brave and loyal but lack the discipline of
Western armies. They are not big on planning and are inclined to rush
forward to join in any contact and to blaze away over one another's
heads.

Operations in areas such as Deh Rawud and the Baluchi
Valley, green ribbons of fertile ground winding through the jagged brown
mountains of southern Afghanistan, are
dangerous and the Australian troops are exposed.

These valleys have long been used as infiltration routes by Taliban insurgents moving
from the highlands down to Tarin Kowt, and the troops are there to block them.

In winter the area is bitterly cold and the mountains white with snow. In
the summer -- fighting season -- it is rocky, dusty and hot.

Special forces, Special Air Service troops and commandos carry out lengthy patrols
farther afield, hunting down insurgent leaders and bomb-making factories.

The Diggers also act on intelligence gathered from local villagers, special forces patrols
and manned and unmanned aircraft to track down insurgents moving through the valley
who might place the lethal bombs known as improvised explosive devices or set up ambushes.

Hugh White, a former deputy secretary in the Defence Department who is now a professor
at the Australian National University, has consistently questioned Australia's military
involvement.
White says it's important to note that we don't actually know why Australia is losing more men.
He says one possibility may be simply bad luck, as in the helicopter crash.
"Another possibility is that the Taliban are stepping up their operations," White says.

He makes the point that we know very little about what's happening on the
ground in Afghanistan because the ADF releases very little information.

"The Taliban seem to be pushing the Australians harder," he says. "Maybe
they think that with the Dutch gone, if they push harder we may be more
willing to go, too.
"A third possibility is that the Australians are taking on more risky operations.

"I think there is an element of that, too. We are taking on a more active mentoring role
with the Afghan National Army. Our guys are going out more with the ANA on joint patrols
in contested country, which is inherently risky.
"With the best will in the world, it's not as safe operating out there with the ANA as
it would be with [fellow Australians]."

White suggests the high number of casualties recently are the consequence of a
combination of bad luck and the increased tempo of operations by both sides.

"At least one of those three factors is under our control and it does seem [important]
to ask whether the extra costs in lives [apparently] being imposed on us by this more
active campaigning strategy is justified by the results we're getting.

"If you believe what the government and opposition are saying, that we're in
Afghanistan to secure a stable future for Afghanistan and reduce the
threat of terrorism, then you might reach one conclusion about how
worthwhile these operations are and whether they are worth the cost.

"But I don't believe anyone in government really thinks that. I think it is
universally accepted in government that we're not going to succeed in
Afghanistan. That we're just hanging on until the Americans go.

"And if that's right then hanging on until the Americans go should be done
at the lowest possible risk to Australian lives, in which case there's
an argument that we should stop doing the more risky operations.

"A lot of people would say that was defeatist, but if we're not seriously
expecting to get a result. -- if we're not seriously expecting that . . .
when we start pulling out [in a few years] the situation will have
improved much -- we've got to be very careful about whether it's worth
our while undertaking more risky operations that are costing us lives
and not changing the strategic outcome."

It all boils down to a simple question, White says: "Are we really serious about getting
a result, or are we going through the motions to hold up our end as a good ally?
"I think it's that latter, and if that's the case then we should be doing everything we can
to make sure that we are going through the motions at the cheapest possible price in lives."
White remains deeply sceptical about the whole strategy.

"The idea that you somehow fundamentally change the Afghan political landscape with
a couple of hundred soldiers and a couple of hundred aid workers . . . Societies are much harder to shift than that.

"The more Australians die, the more seriously the people responsible -- and
that is the ministers -- the more they have to interrogate their own
judgment about what we're trying to do and whether it's worth it, and
whether it's going to work.

"If it's not going to work, if three or five years from now we're going
to leave Afghanistan pretty much as it is today -- and I'll bet my boots we will --
then we'll want to ask ourselves
why there are 21 dead Australians.

"In this situation people focus on those who have already died.

"And they often say we can't stop now because that would betray the people who've already died," White adds.

"What you've really got to focus on is
the people who haven't yet died but who will.

"There are people who are now walking around in uniform
who will die before we leave, and you've got to ask yourself
on what basis are we allowing that to happen."

A ROGUE Afghan soldier has opened fire and killed three Australian
army trainers and wounded six others in the volatile south of
Afghanistan, NATO and a local commander have confirmed.

An Afghan National Army (ANA) officer was also shot and wounded.
The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is yet to comment on the incident.
The shooting occurred during morning parade at 8.30am (3pm AEDT) at
Shah Wali Kot in Kandahar province, the ABC reported.

The alliance force says two Australian diggers were killed and the third
later died of his injuries after ''an individual wearing an Afghan
National Army uniform apparently turned his weapon on Afghan and
coalition forces''.

It said the shooter was also killed in the incident, but gave no further details.

General Abdul Hameed, commander of 205 Atal corps in the south, said an Afghan
soldier with three years' experience had carried out the shooting.

''At around 8.30 this morning (3pm AEDT), an ANA soldier named Darwish who
had been serving as an ANA soldier for the past three years opened fire on a group
of Australian military officers, killing three of them and injuring six others as well as
one ANA officer,'' said Hameed.

''The attacker was also gunned down by ISAF soldiers.''
It's not the first time an ANA soldier has killed an Australian soldier.

In May this year, 25-year-old Lance Corporal Andrew Gordon Jones was shot dead
by a rogue ANA soldier at the Patrol Base Marshal in the Chora Valley.

Fears of infiltration within the Afghan army ranks have risen as Western backers fund
and
train a huge expansion of the fledgling national force ahead of the
withdrawal of all foreign combat forces scheduled for 2014.

The announcement came as a suicide car bomber in the capital Kabul struck a US-run
NATO bus travelling through the southwest of the city, killing at least 17 people, including 13 US soldiers.

The death of the three diggers overnight is the
single worst incident involving Australians since June last year when
three members of the Sydney-based 2nd Commando Regiment
died in a helicopter crash
in Kandahar province.

A total of 32 Australian soldiers have now been killed
in a decade of involvement in Afghanistan.

Australian 50 Cent Coins : 1988 First Fleet Bicentenary 50c
October 4, 2010
1988 First Fleet Bicentenary 50c

In 1988 Australia celebrated 200 years since the arrival of the First
Fleet. Captain Arthur Phillip led the party of 11 ships to the
founding of Sydney and the colonisation of New South Wales. Arriving
between 18-20th January 1788 1,487 men, women, children and convicts
landed to establish the first European colony in Australia.

There were many events around the country planned for the Bicentenary
in 1988 including a 50 cent coin released into circulation by the Royal
Australian Mint. This dodecagonal (12 sided) 31.51mm copper (75%)
nickel (25%) coin weighed in at 15.55 grams with a plain edge. The
reverse depicts an uncharted map of New Holland (Australia), the stars
of the southern cross and a ship of the First Fleet. This coin is often
nicknamed the "Tall Ships" coin when found in change. It was designed
by Michael Tracey. The standard obverse for 1988 was the Raphael Maklouf portrait
of Queen Elizabeth II, the last year this portrait was used.

8,998,800 of these coins were released into circulation in 1988.
They also feature in the Masterpieces in Silver issues of 1988 and 1989
in sterling silver proof, the 1989 issue being a 1989 dated 50c. Mint
and Proof year sets for 1988 also feature this Tall ships coin.

A one dollar was also released for the Bicentenary in 1988.

Australian Dollar Coins - 1988 First Fleet Bicentenary
November 4, 2009
1988 First Fleet Bicentenary One Dollar by Stuart Devlin
1988 brought many celebrations and issues marking 200 years since the
First Fleet landed in Port Jackson, Sydney. These ships brought the
first immigrants to start the new colony of New South Wales. The First
Fleet consisted of 11 ships bringing approximately 1487 people from
Great Britain to establish Australia's first European colony. On the
26th January 1788 Fleet leader Captain Arthur Phillip planted the
British flag on Australian shore and claimed the land for the British
Empire. This day continues to be celebrated as a national holiday
Australia Day.

This one dollar issue that entered circulation reminds us of the
original Aboriginal inhabitants of our nation. The reverse depicts
aboriginal artwork- a stylised kangaroo on a backdrop of a seven pointed
(federation) star modeled by designer Stuart Devlin.
When we receive one of these in our change, we are reminded of the
native Koori people that were displaced by European settlement. This
standard 25mm, 9 gram, aluminium bronze dollar features the obverse
effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf . 20,400,000 of these
coins entered circulation. 3,500 coins were also struck in aluminium
bronze proof. This dollar was also restruck later for inclusion in the 5
coin uncirculated set 1988-1992. A sterling silver proof version was
also included in the masterpieces in silver set issued in 1990.

Pilots ponder legal action over 'insane' Qantas grounding

THE Australian International Pilots Association (AIPA) is looking
into taking legal action against Qantas, describing the decision to
ground the fleet as "insane" and possibly in breach of the Fair Work Act.

Speaking outside the Qantas domestic terminal at Sydney Airport,
AIPA vice-president Captain Richard Woodward said the union had its
legal team looking into the legal options.

"We think that Alan (Joyce) may have been in breach of the Fair Work Act by his actions,"
he said.

"He has locked out the short-haul pilots,
they are not in this dispute -
their award is not up for negotiation
until next year."

Mr Woodward said

the short-haul operations of Qantas
was the most profitable arm of the airline.

"It's an insane reaction,"
he said.

Qantas pilots never had any intention of going on strike
and claims to the contrary were simply untrue,
Mr Woodward said.

"All we were thinking about doing was
not ringing in before heading into work," he said.

"We are very conservative people,
we know that Qantas passengers hold us in
trust ...
they trust us to get them there safely
and we always
intended on doing that."

AIPA said it was seeking a new clause in the enterprise bargaining agreement

with Qantas that would
ensure that all of the airline's flights
were operated by pilots from the flying kangaroo
as opposed to being outsourced.

He said the only industrial action Qantas pilots had been taking was inflight

announcements about the industrial dispute as well as the donning of red
ties that carried the message "Qantas flight, Qantas pilots".

ASSISTANT Treasurer Bill Shorten says Qantas' decision to ground its
fleet was a "radical overreaction" to the standoff between the airline
and unions.

"You don't lock out your passengers to square off with your employees,"
Mr Shorten said.

"If the unions had locked out the passengers,
I would have been equally outraged,

"But in this case it is the Qantas management that has done, in my opinion,
the premature and wrong thing when plenty could have been done in a
sensible nature."

Czech President Vaclav Klaus, on a trip to Australia,
today refused to pass through a security check at the
entrance to the Australian parliament, server abc.net.au has reported,
citing a witness from among local journalists.

Australian TV channel ABC1, which has its studio in the parliament
building, wanted to make an interview with Klaus, who, however,
refused to go through a security detector.

The programme producer Michelle Ainsworth, who had waited for him
behind the detector in order to usher him to the studio, informed him
that all visitors are supposed to undergo the check.

Klaus, nevertheless, insisted on not doing so.

Ainsworth consulted a parliament security guard
who confirmed that everybody must pass through the check.

In reaction to this, Klaus said he would not go through and returned
to his hotel. To make an interview with him, the ABC1 may visit him in
the hotel, he said.

He left without saying good-bye, said Ainsworth.

According to the server theaustralian.com.au, ABC1
could not make the interview outside its studio for technical reasons.

Klaus, 70, has been on a trip to Australia since last week with a
series of lectures on climate change, the theory he resolutely
denies.(ČTK-Czech Press Agency).

le sabrage wrote:Genesis-Bereshith: In the Beginning
26And Elohim said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the livestock, and over all the earth and over all the creeping creatures that creep on the earth.”

27And Elohim created the man in His image, in the image of Elohim He created him – male and female He created them.

28And Elohim blessed them, and Elohim said to them, “Bear fruit and increase, and fill the earth and subdue it, and rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over all creatures moving on the earth.”

29And Elohim said, “See, I have given you every plant that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed, to you it is for food.

30“And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the heavens, and to every creeping creature on the earth, in which there is life, every green plant is for food.” And it came to be so. 31And Elohim saw all that He had made, and see, it was very good.

Tzelem Elokim=Humankind as Image of YHWH/God

1: Has Intelligence

2: Has Freewill

3: Has component of Spiritual Being-A Soul

4: HaShem/YHWH Rules the Universe and Spirit World, Humans have dominion over the Lower World.

5: Has the faculty of Judgement

6: Has an inherent Holiness and Dignity

As created in the image of God, humans are endowed with "three intrinsic dignities": infinite value, equality, and uniqueness.

The first means that human life cannot be weighed, measured, or compared in terms of, that is, subordinated to, any other value. In the Kantian Parlance humans are always a goal or end in themselves and never a means to something else.

The second term implies that no person or group is privileged over another. In fact, Idolatry results when a person or group absolutizes itself or its message.

The third idea reinforces the dignity of every human by insisting that each person is irreplaceable and has a special role to play in the redemption of the world.

The Jewish religion is founded on the divine assurance and human belief that the world will be perfected." Judaism engages with and seeks to overcome these realities of history through its notion of covenant. The covenant is that dynamic which God inaugurated in history, that partnership between God and the Jewish people, to achieve the dignities for which all humans were created. Jews are those teachers, models, and co-workers-having both a divine and human partners - whom God designated to help all persons and even nature achieve redemption. For Greenberg, the messianic dream of perfection will not be realized by divine fiat, but by "improving this world, one step at a time."

These understandings of God, humans, and the world are expressed through the Torah and lived-out by the Jewish people through the Holy days and the Halakhah. In this view, Torah is that divine teaching which stands as "the constitution of the ongoing relationship of God and the Jewish people."

This expanded view/articulation of higher values help us to search for YHWHs presence in the secular Realms of Life, some peeps call this: 'Holy Secularism'.

The Covenant is essentially a Divine, Loving, Pedagogic process. As Humans become more competent, YHWH invites them to take up a more active role in the Task of Tikkun Olam/World to Come, as Co-Creators.

The lay people of YHWH/God play a more influential role in discerning Yahwehs purpose and in carrying out His Divine Mandates.

Later, ensuing Historical events reshape understandings of earlier Teachings.

Summarized

We=ALL Living things-creatures-sustained and Nurtured by Yahweh-will fill the World with Life.

* We will reshape the Historical Reality, the Flesh & Blood world we inhabit, to sustain that Life at the highest possible level.

* Life will multiply and triumph Quantitatively over all its enemies; including Entropy, Death, and Disorder.

* Life will equally triumph Qualitatively.

* All of Lifes’ capacities/potentials will be developed fully and realized.

* When Life blossoms to its fullest capacity that treats all Life, especially Human Life-the most developed form-and sustains it with the highest and fullest respect that it deserves, then Life will be in harmony with existence and deeply related to Yahweh, its Source and Sustainer(Natural Laws)

* This is the Jews Story, and by default; the Christians/Xns.

* Telling the Story of Creation is the Jews 'Witness'. The present evidentiary Facts contradict the Narrative fairly substantialy.

* Yet, This Story of Creation is shared by Jews and Christians

* This Story leads Humans to see existence as best they can, from a Cosmic Perspective-Sub Specie Aeternitatis.

* From that Vantage Point there are Three Grand Movements in the unfolding Pattern of the Cosmos

1: The World is moving from Chaos to Order. From the Big Bang, with no Laws of Nature to the regularity of the Life sustaining Laws of Nature.

2: The World is moving from Non-Life to Life. From a State in which no life existed to the emergence of Life. From one cell, untold replications, life has grown Quantitatively, and developed Qualitatively. It has luxuriated and spread into a vast range of forms over and through a variety of sustaining conditions/environments.

* The declaration that Life is growing, moving from non-life to life is counter-intuitive.
Death & Entropy refute that contention.

The 'Key' is YHWH/God-The Hidden, Infinite Source of Life with limitless Goodness, Love and Power that sustains Life and Nurtures every possible Form of Life into Being.

* YHWH, the Divine Source evokes the Third Grand Movement of the Cosmos

3: Life is growing ever more to resemble its Ground: YHWH

Life moves from being less to becoming more and more like Yahweh. The highest form of Life, the Human Being, represents the High Point reached thus far.

In Human Form, life so resembles its Maker that it is called; Biblically; 'The Image of God'

* This emergence of "The Image of God" is the Turning Point in Cosmic History according to Jews & Christians.

Up to that point Life has been sworn to 'Be Fruitful & Multiply' (maximizing reproductive success) through a built-in control Programme-A 'Selfish Gene'- that drives the process.

* The 'Image of God' Consciousness is so much like YHWHs that Humans are able to 'grasp' this overall pattern of which we, ourselves are part, and to join voluntarily in its realization.

* Similarly, the Human 'Image of YHWH/God has a capacity to Love ALL their fellow creatures and every aspect of the Universe, as well as the Maker of it all and the Beauty of the Plan.

* Once Humans understand and embrace this understanding, they will lovingly identify with and willingly participate in the process of Perfection.

* YHWH has invited us, as Humans, The 'Image of God', to enter into a Covenantal Partnership, committed to Love, to join fully in perfecting the Universe.

Tikkun Olam

* The People of Israel joyfully acknowledge that YHWHs first Covenant, the Noahide Covenant, never superseded, is made with ALL Humanity, not exclusively with Jews and/or Christians alone.

* It is made with ALL Sentient Beings.

* ALL Beings are called to recognize and participate in Natures Patterns.

* To accept Limits.

* To Direct their choices and actions in favour of Life.

* To join in working for Order against Chaos.

* We are ALL CHOSEN to become part of the movement from Non-Life to Life.

* We are commanded to increase Life and make it grow ever more like its Maker.

* The purpose of the Religious way of life is to create the nurturing ambience of memory and experience, of relationships and actions that sustain Human growth and turns it towards Yahweh.

* Being in the 'Image of God/YHWH brings with it more God like capacities. It bestows intrinsic Dignity, a climatic extension of that respect to which all of life is entitled.

* The People of Israel hold these Truths to be self-evident: That ALL Humans are created in 'The Image of YHWH/God; and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights, among which are:

* Infinite Value

* Equality

* Uniqueness.

These are Birthrights of every Son & Daughter of Yahweh

The Sinai Event was the ultimate Social Engineering event.

The Torah is the first, and oldest Religious Book written in an Alephbet/ Alphabet........this alters the hegemony of the Brain to being left hemispherical centric=Abstract, linear and sequential. the ground for Theoretical Science....

THE UNIVERSAL DESIRE FOR CLOSENESS TO God...AND THE SECRET OF THE SABBATH by Rabbi Chaim Richman

The following teaching from the riches of the Oral Tradition is about a level of understanding the Sabbath which is relevant to Jews and non-Jews alike. It is based on a teaching by Rabbi Chaim ben Atar (1746-1793), known as "the holy Light of Life," based on the title of his most famous work.

I. The World Intuitively Pines for G-d
Man - The Centerpiece of Creation
The created world can be divided into four basic categories: the inanimate, plant, animal, and 'speaking' life - man. Man, the highest level of creation, is the only creature endowed with the capability of speech, and this is what singles him out as a completely separate category - he has the greatest potential to develop a relationship with his Creator. He is the center of creation and its purpose and crowning achievement. For this reason, he was created last, and introduced into the Garden... to enable him to enter into a complete world, ready for him, furnished and equipped in advance to house its illustrious occupant.

Every Level of Creation Possesses a Soul
Man is followed by the members of the animal kingdom. Next in line comes the plant kingdom, and finally, inanimate creation - the lowest level of creation, as exemplified by stone. Even stone, the Torah teaches, possesses some degree of life-force, however weak. For it is impossible for something which the Holy One has created to be incapable of recognizing Him. Therefore, commensurate to that degree of life-force, awareness of the Divine could be said to exist within it...

Desire for Closeness to G-d... The Prime Mover
And so the soul, the essence, of every creature, each according to its level of understanding, has some inkling of the greatness of the Creator, and actually carries on a relationship with Him. This soul is constantly driven with endless passion to come closer to the source of all life, the Great and Perfect Light of the L-rd... how much more so should this be true among the higher, more spiritual elements of creation who understand to some extent what it means to 'cling' to the light of the living G-d.

All of Creation is United in the Desire for Closeness to G-d
Herein lies one of the greatest secrets of creation...

All life on earth... and even the actual physical elements that comprise the planet itself - the entire world as one, including every level of creation, from the lowest level of the inanimate - stones and earth, to the highest and most intelligent life-form, man himself; an endless pageant which spans every creature, plant and animal - all are constantly and inexorably united by an all-consuming, burning desire for G-d. This is the vital force which drives the world; this desire is the power which fuels the universe... it reverberates within the entire life-force, and the whole globe, like a man beating with one heart, knows on the deepest level with absolute clarity that there is nothing as sweet, desirable, and sustaining as 'Dveykut' - the ability to 'cling' close to the light of the Creator. This is the purpose of life itself, and on the deepest collective intuitive level, all are aware that nothing else is worth living for. This longing is itself the vital life-force of everything, and the entire world draws from it at once. In other words, this longing for G-d is what fuels the world to go on.

Because G-d is the Creator of all existence, He maintains an intimate link with each and every creature, regardless of its spiritual capacity. Obviously not all of creation is equal in spiritual sensitivity. Regardless of this, that link of intimate knowledge still exists, according to its degree of conciousness and development.

Three Revolutionary Innovations in Human History took place at Mount Sinai.

1: Abstract Ethical Monotheism

2: Universal Codified Law

3: An Alephbet 1,800 BCE

Abstract Ethical Monotheism rather than Polytheism, Rule of Law for All rather than the Divine Rights of Kings or Queens and an Aleph/Bet, less than thirty characters that replaced Iconographs/Ideograms and Hieroglyphs, enhancing Literacy amongst the masses.

The abstraction of all three innovations were mutually reinforcing.

YHWH/God proclaimed that there exists a Codex of morality that stands above Human intercourse.

The 10 Commandments applied universally to everyone. no King, Pharoah, or Potentate was above the Law.

Refutes the rubric that 'Might makes Right'.

YHWH/God expected all His Chosen People TO READ what He inspired to be written.

The Pentateuch is the oldest Religious Book written in an Alephbet-Alphabet. Prior books were written in Cuneiform, Hieroglyphs etc......

YHWH forbade anyone from visualizing Him. No Images. No Idolatry.

He sanctioned only the written word.

This promulgates equality and openness.

An overarching Theme of the Pentateuch, and ensuing Books of the Bible is: Justice for all.

A distinguishing feature of the Pentateuch from other belief systems of the Time is its dominating Theme of: Righteousness,

Living a pious life and obeying written law was/is more important than winning Battles, honouring the King, or sacrificing to a local god.

Justice for all was a unique community standard in an era when the dominant principle was a raised and clenched fist.

Unlike other ANE Sagas, the Exodus begins with the people shackled slaves.

Unlike other ANE Sagas, Yahweh 'Chose' the people rather than the people choosing their god.
This rediscovery allows each to uncover and affirm each others’ role in the Divine Plan. The Kingdom of Yahweh is advanced and comes closer.

'You are my witnesses says YHWH/God' Isaiah 43:10
The People of Israel are YHWHs Servants, 'Chosen' to witness to the loving Creator and the Divine Plan for Humanity and the Cosmos.

The People of Israel = not just the Israelis, or Jews, but to all who affirm that Yahweh has made a valid Covenant with Abraham and his descendants and all who take up the task of World Redemption so that the covenant can be fulfilled.

For that is the purpose of making the covenant.

Xns and Muslims are recognized as Abrahams children when they purge themselves of Supersessionist claims and hatred of Jews.

To be True to its Witness, the People of Israel tell 3 Stories to the World, the rest of Humanity, in the presence of Yahweh and in the presence of their fellow Humans.

1: They tell the Story of Creation, the Divine Vision of an intended perfect World. Jew & Xn stake their existence that this World will come to be.

2: The Story of the Covenant, the process operating between a Divine-Human partnership whereby our imperfect World will be brought back to that state of Perfection.

3: The Story of Redemption-sometimes called: 'The End of Days'-'The Messiah Story'-which is the culmination and realization of the process.

At the end, Holistic perfection will be achieved.
Peace between Humans.

Between Humans and all the rest of Life, between all Life and Nature itself, and between all of the above and Yahweh.

Three Stories add up to one comprehensive Story: The Triumph of Life

Before Monotheism there had never been Religious Warfare.

The Polytheistic Cultures were live and let live about other culture Deities and often borrowed and share aspects.

The Polytheistic Deities were usually Local Deities, not Universe/Worldwide.

Polytheist had National gods, Local gods, family gods and personal gods, even their pet animals had gods.

Abstract Ethical Monotheism was a Major Advance along the road to Enlightenment, but came at a high cost.

Abstract Ethical Monotheism encouraged people to think in new ways. An Abstract Ethical Monotheistic Creator Being not tied to a concrete Image/Picture is a very Abstract Concept..

Abstraction is a crucial component of Logical Reasoning and its use can liberate people from superstition.

Devotion to an Abstract Deity has a Heavy price.

If everyone agrees there is only one, true, Living Creator Being, and different groups conceive of it in different ways, then whose perception of that Deity is the correct one?

Examine each groups’ values and praxis.

Different perceptions have inspired some groups to wage war and engage in forced conversions.

This never occurred in Polytheistic Cultures.

They had many wars but for the usual mundane reasons, Land, Treasure, Women, Power over others for the sake of Power alone, but they never waged Religious War.

One effect of an Alphabetic based Abstract Ethical Monotheism is the brain is using a new abstract, linear, sequential, and reductionist means of communication which moves people who learn it and use it into a Left Brain, Masculine Mode, rather than the usual Pictographic, Feminine Right Brain Mode.

The Aleph/Alphabet subliminally coaxes users to be intolerant of other Iconic Systems of Beliefs.

This is illuminated in the Ten Commandments.

As stated before, Judaism is the first religion to be based upon universal literacy, the written word.

When Moses came down from his meet and greet with YHWH on the mountain, the multitude had fashioned an Idol/Golden Calf, this so upset Moses he dropped the two stone Tablets upon which YHWH/God had written the ten commandments.

Allegorically: In the first confrontation between Image and Written Word, both were destroyed.

As the story goes, Moses returned to the Mountain Top and Yahweh provided him with another set.

The 10 Commandments; The first four Commandments are for the Recognition and service/Worship of YHWH/God, the remaining six focus on our fellow humans, loving and serving them.

The Commandment to Honour Both Father and Mother elevates and recognizes the importance and status of Women in the Family Group.

Love your neighbour is not one of the Ten but appears in the Torah/Instruction, Leviticus 19:18.

The last six commandments are not unusual, and found in other Codices of Laws, The First four Commandments are Unique.

Each one of the first four commandments encourages Alphabetic Literacy by rejecting the Right Brains way of 'knowing'.

One effect of a new, abstract, linear, sequential and reductionist means of communication moves people who learn it into a Left Brain, Masculine Mode.

Social Engineering.

The Ethics they embody are more sophisticated than other contemporary Ancient Near East Cultures.

The First Commandment:

20:2 I am Yahweh thy Elohim, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

20:3 Thou shall have no other elohim before me.

In one fell swoop demoted all other elohim/gods & goddesses to nothings.

Nothing personal, it was business.

The Meta-Message of the First Commandment is that Yahweh is the Master of the Universe, He is self-existent, and all other elohim/gods & goddesses are created beings, subservient to Him.

Psalm 82

82:1 Yahweh stands in the congregation of El; he judges among the elohim.

82:2 How long will you judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah.

82:3 Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.

82:4 Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.

82:5 They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course.

82:6 I have said, You are elohim; and all of you are children of the most High.

82:7 But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.

82:8 Arise, O Yahweh, judge the earth: for thou shall inherit all nations.

All of Yahwehs’ Titles are masculine.

The First Commandment is a radical break with the Hebrews past environment. Moses and the Hebrews had left Egypt which was Polytheistic, alot of gods and goddesses worship.

Yahweh declares there is no worship of other gods or goddesses.

Perhaps the most radical sentence ever written.

The Second Commandment:

20:4 Thou shall not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I; Yahweh thy Elohim am a jealous Elohim, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

No Graven Images, Icons or Idols, Statues.

Learning to think without Images is indispensable to Alphabetic Literacy. The Power formerly rendered to Images/Pictures is now transferred to the written word.

Make no Graven Images is a ban/restraint on Right Brain Pattern Recognition.

The Third Commandment:

20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of Yahweh thy Elohim in vain; for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Do not use Yahwehs Name vainly, with Malintent. Again; Left Brain.

Yahwehs first instruction to adam isto Name all the critters. Through Naming, Adam attains dominion over all the Earth. Naming confers meaning and order, moving Life from Chaos to Order.

To Name is to know, to know is to control. Order out of Chaos.

The Fourth Commandment:

20:8 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

20:10 But the seventh day is the Sabbath of thy Elohim: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

20:11 For in six days made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Seven Days are not a Natural Break Point in any of Earths Major Natural Rhythmic Cycles-Lunar-Solar, except the Quarter Moon.

This facilitates the learning of Arithmetic.

Leviticus 25:3-10 is about the Jubilee Years, the 50th,

No other Ancient Near East culture at that time had instructed the general population to compute complex time periods, this had formerly been the domain of the Priestly Castes.

The Time Commandment lays the foundation for the concept of Justice, a well developed sense of Linear Time is necessary to conceive of Punishment delayed and Rewards postponed.

Non-Literate Cultures are not as pre-occupied with the notion/concept of Justice as the Literate, because they do not conceive of time only as linear.

Non-Literate Societies tend to think of death as a passage to another World, not as a Day in Court.

Alphabets stretch out the sense of Time and make possible the awareness of the possibility of a retribution Time in the distant future.

A Judgement Day only occurs in Literate Cultures.

Alphabet Literate Cultures became aware of writing History in a Linear, Chronological sequencing of Events.

The fourth Commandments Mechanical/Sociological ramifications is instructing people to be aware of Passing Time.

This was the advent of the seven day week, and a day off every week.

A day off for ALL Humans, Free and Bond, and ALL Beasts of Burden one day a week and the Farmland to lay fallow every seven years to rejuvinate the enzymes in the ground.

This led to Sundials, waterclocks, Pendulums, Escape Mechanisms, Cogs, Gears, Calenders.

Time is a key function of the Left Brain.

Each of the First Four Commandments trains people in the ability to: Think Abstractly, linearly and sequentially.

Collectively, they produce a Mindset that enhances the use and facility of Alphabetic Literacy.

This Technology welded the small group into a cohesive and coherent Nation/Culture.

What occurred at/in Sinai was unique, the Authority of the Written Word superseded the authority of the Image.

Reiterating the Revolutionary Innovations that occurred at Mount Sinai:

1: Abstract Ethical Monotheism emerged,

2:Universal Codified Laws establishing Moral Ethics

3: The Alephbet-Proto Alphabet emerged. The Hebrews reduced thosands of Images/Hieroglyphs/Petroglyphs/Ideograms/Pictograms into two dozen Characters, enabling Universal Literacy

For the first time ever, Religion demanded the follower be Literate. It is Commanded the Fathers obtain Scrolls of the Torah and teach them to their children.

Moses Commanded; Thou shall read the Law before all Israel Deut-31:10,11

The Reading of the Torah remains the most sacred obligation of every Jew.

Yahweh was concerned, unlike other gods, about the actions of everyone of His people.

Yahweh actually cares.

If someone was cheating/exploiting widows and orphans, mistreating strangers and slaves.etc.......YHWH knew and became wrathful.

The polytheistic gods did not.

Yahweh in His written Laws provided preventive Medicine, unknown to Egypt and Mesopotamia.

He explicitly spelled out in excruciating detail and minutia exactly what He expected from each and every Israelite.

Each Israelite established a personal relationship with Yahweh.

All of Yahwehs Laws were written down and everybody knew them.

It was an absolute Judaic condition that every male was literate.

Ignorance of the Law was no defence.

The Hebrews were the first culture to universally embrace Alphabetic writing, the Torah is the first/oldest Religious Book written in an Alphabet.

The 10 Commandments were transmitted in a written Alephbetic form; Paleo-Hebrew.

Abstract letters/grammatical sequence/uniconsonantal phenomes.

The Alephbet/Alphabet introduced and enabled the possibility of Universal Literacy

So once upon a time in the Sinai Desert a radical new communication technology emerged that would forever change cultural perceptions and that the first people to utilize it would introduce fundamental principles and features underpinning Western Civilisation.

Historical Data: Proto-Sinaitic Alephbet=precursor of the Alphabet.

Discovered by Sir William Flinders Petrie, very early 20th century. Dated to: 1,800 BCE

Egyptian Coptic 2,000 years later/after

Tell el Armana Cache Phoenician 1,450 BCE letters from Canaanite Leaders to Akhenaton were scribed in Cuneiform

Akkadian Cuneiform in usage after Sumerian Conquest.

An amazing vortex of Science and History occurred in the Sinai that the worlds’ oldest alphabet was found where the Hebrew Nation had their seminal experience.

Yet another Unique Concept brought forth at Mount Sinai is the Concept of Free Will.

Throughout the Ancient Near East, Babylon, Egypt etc......humans 'believed their fate, destiny was in the hands of the gods.

The Sinaitic Covenant convinced the Israelites that every decision was theirs to make: Choose Life or Choose Death.

The choice between Right and Wrong was upon the individual. This beget the concept of Guilt, 'Guilty Conscious'; an internal Quality Control.

Moral Relativists may consider this an ambiguous area, but is it really?

Bottom Line of what occurred at Sinai, those many years ago, the Power that once had been given to pictures was transferred to written words.

The Power of the Right Brain was Transferred to the Left Brain.

The Alephbet/Alphabet is the Bibles Eminence Grise-The unsuspected power.

Superorganisms/memes compete, as one Entelechy rises, others fall.

Of all the Ancient Near East Superorganisms/Memes, only the Jews have survivied.

Alphabetic Literacy profoundly reconfigured the relationship between the Hebrews and their Deity and between the Hebrews and their neighbours. The other ANE cultures.

The Jews have an unshakable faith.

The Religious beliefs of the Sumerians, Babylonians, Hittites, Hyskos, Hurrians, Cretans, Mittani, Assyrians, Persians, Canaanites, Ugarites, Akkadians, Egyptians, Greeks, Phoenicians, Philistines, and Roman Belief Systems have diminished greatly and most have disappeared.
The Hebrew Faith has withstood the Viscitudes of times, surviving catastrophes that should have extinguished them.

A member of the military council, Major General Mohsen el-Fangari,
said protesters' calls for change ahead of the election

''What is the point of being in Tahrir?'' he asked,

Thousands of migrants 'disappear' in cities under new official system
By Steve Doughty

Last updated at 2:17 AM on 21st November 2011

Hundreds of thousands of migrants have ‘disappeared’ at the stroke of a pen under a new official counting system.

The method has led to apparent large falls in the numbers of migrants thought to live in London and other major cities.

The change has provoked fury among council leaders who say the immigrant populations
of their districts have been grossly underestimated by government statisticians.

FEET Of CLAY... - Page 2 Article-0-00B665B300000578-466_468x286
Migrants 'disappear': London, Manchester, Bristol, Cambridge and Oxford
are among cities who have had 'large downward revisions' from
the new counting method

Westminster and Kensington in London, Manchester, Bristol, Oxford and Cambridge
are among places thought to have had their estimated populations reduced
by many thousands by the Office for National Statistics.

Colin Barrow, Tory leader of Westminster, said: ‘After four years of work
supposedly improving migration estimates, the ONS apparently still has
little idea how many migrants are in this country or where they live and
work.

‘Our incoming migrant population appears to have dropped by 17 per cent over four
years; you only have to go out into the bars and restaurants in the West End to see
that migrants come to Westminster to live and work in much greater numbers than this.’

  • Foreign criminals are 'building a network of children' to stay in the UK, Home Office warns
  • Firms who take on British teenagers instead of migrant workers should be given subsidies, says head of CBI
More than nine out of ten migrants to the UK live in England,
which has become the sixth most crowded major country in the world,
the MigrationWatch think-tank said last week.

Last year net migration was 239,000.

The new estimates method, to be used from next year onwards, uses the same source
of immigration statistics the ONS has always used. This is the
International Passenger Survey, a check on intentions of arrivals at air
and sea ports and on the Eurostar.

From this researchers use a complex formula, based on other official population
databases, to estimate the number of yearly arrivals.

Under the new method, this formula has been tweaked, resulting in changes to
the estimated numbers arriving at certain towns and cities.

FEET Of CLAY... - Page 2 Article-0-009D5A931000044C-625_468x306
Only 4,000?
The new estimate pins the number of migrants in 2009 in Westminster
to just 4,000.
Tory leader Colin Barrow finds this seriously questionable
.

Some have fallen while others have risen, but the total remains unchanged.

Westminster’s migrant population has been reduced by 10,000, and Manchester’s and
Bristol’s each by 30,000. According to ONS briefing papers, Kensington and Chelsea,
Oxford and Cambridge have had ‘quite large downward revisions’.

Mr Barrow said: ‘We would seriously question the estimate that fewer than 4,000
migrants came to Westminster in the 2009 financial year to seek work.

'We have seen more people registering with doctors and paying council tax in
Westminster, so we fail to understand how the government statisticians can be so wrong.’

Councils can lose millions in Treasury grants if Whitehall cuts their population estimates.

The ONS was scheduled to publish papers about the new migration counting
system last week, but failed to do so. Some places are said to show a
higher count, such as Newham, East London, with a 13 per cent increase.

The ONS declined to comment yesterday.

lilly, you falsely claim that no one responds/refutes your 'claims' that australia is the Biblical 'promised Land'. That you falsely 'claim' that australia is the Biblical Zion.

That you 'claim' that the land of egypt is not mentioned in the Bible, that some of the events of Abraham, Joseph, and the Tribes of the Hebrews/Israelites did not take place in Egypt.

You also Falsely claim that Yahshua/Jesus 'did away' with the Torah/Instruction of YHWH-Yahweh.

You also Falsely claim that 'spiritual Israel' replaces the Jews and the geographical Israel.

ALL of your 'claims' are FALSE and I, Senor El Kabong, Monsieur Le Sabrage and Barnacle Bill have refuted ALL your 'claims', proving them to be FALSE and wrong with credentialed Scholarship and credentialed Academic and Theological Sources.

Here is your challenge. Will you run away as always, obfusicate the clear meanings or will you 'stand toe to toe' and support your FALSE 'claims' with credentialed sources that can be verified.

Truth IS NOT ambiguous and subject to personal opinion. TRUTH is FACT/Reality. Below is a Timeline of the Earths Evolution.........from the beginning. The revalation came to Professor Andrew Parker during a visit to Rome. He was in the Sistine Chapel, gazing up at Michelangelo's awesome ceiling paintings, when a realisation struck him with dizzying force.
'A Biblical enigma exists that is on the one hand so cryptic it has remained camouflaged for millennia, and on the other so obvious one cannot miss it.'
The enigma is that the order of Creation as described in the Book of Genesis, and so powerfully depicted in the Sistine Chapel by the greatest artist of the Renaissance, has been precisely, eerily confirmed by modern evolutionary science.

Yet how on earth could this be possible? And why had nobody noticed it before?
Such was the starting point of Parker's jaw-dropping new book, The Genesis Enigma: an astounding work which seeks to prove that the ancient Hebrew writers of the Book of Genesis knew all about evolution - 3,000 years before Darwin.
It takes a journey back through aeons of geological time, and also into the minds and imaginations of the ancient Israelites.
Andrew Parker is a leading scientist in his field: a research fellow at Oxford University, research leader at the Natural History Museum, and as if that weren't enough, a professor at Shanghai's Jiao Tong university.
As a scientist he never paid much heed to the Book of Genesis, assuming, like most of his colleagues, that such primitive mythology - which is believed to have been compiled from several sources between 950 and 500 BC - has long since been 'disproved' by hard scientific fact.
But after his Sistine Chapel moment, he went back to look at Genesis in more detail. And what he read astonished him. It was even, he says, 'slightly scary'.
Somehow - God alone knew how - the writer or writers of that ancient text had described how the evolution of life on earth took place in precise detail and perfect order.
Our ancestors possessed a truly timeless wisdom It is always disturbing and haunting to encounter an ancient wisdom that seems to anticipate or even exceed our own.
More fanciful writers immediately start to theorise wildly: that those who built the pyramids, or Stonehenge, must have been guided by super-intelligent aliens, that sort of thing.
Andrew Parker, a scientist and proud of it, has no time for such twaddle. But he does gradually come to understand, in the course of his investigations, that our ancestors of thousands of years ago, though they may not have had iPods and plasma-screen televisions, nevertheless possessed a wisdom that was, quite literally, timeless: as true now as it was then.
In the Book of Genesis, God first and most famously creates heaven and earth, but 'without form', and commands: 'Let there be light.' A perfect description of the Big Bang, that founding moment of our universe some 13 billion years ago, an unimaginable explosion of pure energy and matter 'without form' out of nothing - the primordial Biblical 'void'.
He then creates the dry land out of the waters, but it is the water that comes first. As Parker points out, scientists today understand very similarly that water is indeed crucial for life.

When 'astrobiologists' look into space for signs of life on other planets, the first thing they look for is the possible presence of water.
On the third day, we are told: 'God said, "Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so."'
Now factually speaking, grass didn't evolve until much later. In the Triassic and Jurassic epochs, the dinosaurs knew only plants such as giant conifers and tree ferns. But since grass did not in fact evolve until much later, a sternly literal-minded scientist would declare the Bible wrong, and consign it to the nearest wheelie bin.
But wait a minute, says Parker. If you take 'grass, herb and tree' to mean photosynthesising life in general, then this is, once again, spot on.

The very life forms on earth were single-celled bacteria, but the first truly viable bacteria were the 'cyanobacteria' - those that had learned to photosynthesise.
As a result, they began to expire oxygen, creating an atmosphere that could go on to support more and more life. They were the key to life on earth.
Naturally, says Parker, 'the ancient Israelites would have been oblivious to any single-celled life form, let alone cyanobacteria', but 'grass' as a loose description of life forms that photosynthesise?

On the fourth day, Genesis famously becomes confusing. On the first day, remember, God has already created light, and made Day and Night. But it isn't until day four that he makes the lights in heaven, the greater light to rule the day and the lesser the night.
Hang on - so he made 'Day' three days before he made the Sun? Houston, I think we have a problem.

Yet the writers of Genesis were just as well aware as us, surely, that the sunrise causes the day. You don't need a degree in astronomy to work that one out. What on earth did they mean?
Here, The Genesis Enigma comes up with a stunningly ingenious answer. For Parker argues that day four refers to the evolution of vision.
Until the first creatures on earth evolved eyes, in a sense, the sun and moon didn't exist. There was no creature on earth to see them, nor the light they cast.

When Genesis says: 'Let there be lights... To divide the day from the night,' it is talking about eyes.
'The very first eye on earth effectively turned on the lights for animal behaviour,' writes Professor Parker, 'and consequently for further rapid evolution.'
Almost overnight, life suddenly grew vastly more complex. Predators were able to hunt far more efficiently, and so prey had to evolve fast too - or get eaten.

The moment that there were 'lights', or eyes, then life exploded into all its infinite variety.
And yet again, that's what Genesis says happened, and in the correct environment too. In the sea.
For on the very next day of Creation, the fifth day: 'God said, "Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life."'

That is exactly what happened. Life that had hitherto been lived in the dark, by simple, slow-moving, worm-like creatures, erupted into dazzling diversity. We know all about it from the world famous Burgess Shale fossils.
They were discovered in the summer of 1909 by one Charles Doolittle Walcott, on holiday with his family in the Canadian Rockies. Walcott began to chip away at the shale with his geological hammer, and quite by chance stumbled upon one of the greatest finds in all science.
For the shale records what happened on our planet around 508 million years ago, long before the first dinosaurs: the 'Cambrian expolosion,' which most scientists now think was indeed the direct result of the evolution of vision.
Life on earth exploded in all its infinite variety The life-forms discovered look like nothing else: fabulous, phantasmagoric, alien beings. One had five eyes, and a long wavy snout with jaws on the end. Another looked like an octopus with its head stuck in a beaker, and another can only be described as 'a swimming pea with a pair of beady eyes, bull's horns, a pair of "hands" and a fish's tail.'
Others resemble balls of spines, vase-shaped pin-cushions, or badminton shuttlecocks with chameleon-like tongues. Anyone who doubts the power of evolution by natural selection only has to look at the Burgess Shale fossils.
How does Genesis describe the teeming aquatic life of the Cambrian explosion? 'And God said, "Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life." ' Immediately following the creation of vision.
How did the writer/writers know that life suddenly diversified into this rich and staggering variety, under the oceans, not on land? Why would a very much land-based people, pastoralists and shepherds, even think like this?
After the Cambrian come the Ordovician, Silurian and Devonian periods - or the appearance of 'great whales', as Genesis succinctly puts it.
How better to describe those epochs which gave us such monsters of the deep as Dunkleosteus, a carnivorous armoured fish whose appearance, says Parker, was 'simply terrifying'. Some 35ft long, 'the size of a small coach', with massive, bone-crunching jaws, even its eyes were armoured.
And after the sea monsters come the birds, the animals, cattle, and finally, homo sapiens. All present and correct, and all still in the right order. Once again, 'In describing how the planet and life around us came to be, the writer of the Genesis narrative got it disturbingly right'.
So what should we make of the extraordinary findings of The Genesis Enigma?
Professor Parker is clear on this subject. 'It would be a great shame if my findings were either misused in an attempt to suggest that scientists themselves are unsure about science, or pounded out of all recognition into support of the seven-day creation premise.'
There is no doubt that literal-minded Creationists do a disservice to the triumphant achievements of modern science, and to the beauty and poetry of the Bible. Evolution is taking place around us all the time. It's why the MRSA superbug has become so dangerously immune to antibiotics, why the race is on to beat the swine flu virus.
Nevertheless, when Parker comes to explaining how the writers of Genesis knew what they knew, he can only conclude that it was due to 'divine intervention', or 'a lucky guess'. Since the odds of the latter seem fantastically remote, Parker tentatively suggests the former.

That totally refutes your unsupported claims. You pervert The Word of God, you dismiss and attack the Torah, Gods instruction to humanity, you claim to replace the jews and Israel based upon distorted and deformed interpretation of Hebrew Texts.......you.........suzi/lilly are the proverbial False Prophet, a pessimist, it took you a week to respond to an honest debate and you lied and bullshitted... thumbs up

THE last train carrying reprocessed nuclear waste back from France
to Germany crossed the border today after being delayed by
demonstrations and steamed towards more trouble.

The train, carrying 11 wagonloads of vitrified radioactive material,
left a siding in the station of Remilly, just outside the town of Metz
and around 30km from the German border, at 7pm (AEDT).

Several hundred French riot police had protected the train overnight, and
around 60 German officers and a French "RAID" team - a SWAT-style
special weapons squad - were on board as it resumed its journey.

The train had left a yard operated by the French nuclear giant Areva in
Valognes, in Normandy, on Wednesday, due to travel more than 1100km
across France and through Germany to the waste dump in Gorleben.

But violent anti-nuclear protests delayed its journey, and authorities
halted it overnight while trying to keep demonstrators guessing about
its eventual route across the border and back into Germany.

Today, it finally crossed the frontier in the border town of Forbach, just south of Saarbrucken, and entered Germany.

Last November a similar controversial shipment took 91 hours to arrive at
its final destination - a day longer than planned - and it was dogged
the length of the route by French and then German protesters.

Around 50,000 activists turned out in Germany to try to disrupt the train
during that transfer, and protest organisers expect 20,000 to demonstrate
against the convoy as it nears the central town of Gorlebenlater on Friday.

Some 19,000 German officers have been deployed, and tear gas and water canon
were fired when clashes erupted overnight when a few hundred protesters tried
to block the line around 20km outside Gorleben.

Spooked by Japan's Fukushima disaster, Germany has decided to phase out its
use
of nuclear power, and thus bring to an end the controversial practice
of sending radioactive waste overland to France for reprocessing.

Anti-nuclear activists want France to follow suit and shut its reactors, an idea
firmly dismissed by President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose government believes
French industry is reliant on cheap nuclear-generated electricity.

There has long been widespread public opposition in Germany to nuclear power,
which environmentalists believe presents an unacceptable radioactive threat
to public health and the environment.

In March, the Japanese nuclear plant at Fukushima Daiichi was hit by an earthquake
and a tsunami, triggering a meltdown and massive radiation leak - and increasing
worldwide concerns over nuclear power.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's government agreed to halt German reactors by 2022,
forcing energy suppliers to close plants and levying a tax on fuel.

In the meantime, Germany will no longer send nuclear waste for
reprocessing in France, but will instead stockpile it until a way is
found to make it safe.

France produces 75 per cent of its electricity needs in nuclear plants - a
higher proportion than any other country - and its electricity bills are around
25 per cent cheaper than in its neighbours, a boon to industry.

German protesters are angry that Merkel's announced nuclear phase-out will
take another decade, and that there is still no permanent storage site for the waste generated in the country's reactors.

Belgium credit rating downgraded by S&P

S&P says it considers Belgian government debt
to be at "high levels"

Belgium has had its credit rating downgraded by ratings agency Standard & Poor's.

The country's downgrade could make it more expensive for Belgium to borrow in future.

Belgium's rating was cut by one notch, to AA from AA+, with S&P expressing concerns about funding and market pressures.

The move comes as the eurozone crisis threatens to keep growing, and with continued concerns over Italian debt.

"We think the Belgian government's capacity to prevent an
increase in general government debt, which we consider to be already at
high levels, is being constrained by rapid private sector deleveraging
both in Belgium and among many of Belgium's key trading partners,"
S&P said in a statement.

It also said the outlook was "negative",
meaning Belgium's rating could possibly be cut further in future.

"We need a reply that is clear and credible
if we are to avoid the worst,"

Belgium's caretaker prime minister, Yves Leterme,
told
Belgian television after S&P's announcement.

Belgian parties reach 2012 budget deal
by:By Roddy Thomson
From:
AAP
November 27, 2011 1:00AM

BELGIAN politicians reached a deal on the 2012 budget today,
ending a 19-month deadlock that had prevented the formation
of a stable government and led to a debt downgrade,
a negotiator said.

"There is an agreement," said a spokesman for the French-speaking socialists,
one of six parties in the linguistically-divided country
that had been struggling
to reconcile spending cuts with tax rises.

The accord, reached after 17 hours of negotiations, opens the way to
forming a new government
after 19 months in caretaker management.

Friday night's downgrade by ratings giant Standard and Poor's, which saw
Belgium drop by one notch to AA, piled pressure on the parties to
reconcile spending cuts with tax rises to avoid EU penalties next month.

Internal pressure, though, was at least matched by external strains among wider
eurozone leaders, two weeks from a crunch summit dogged by mounting doubts
over their ability to resolve the debt crisis.

With a national debt worth almost one year's economic output, which
threatens to crush the country with the onset of recession, outgoing
Prime Minister Yves Leterme had made it clear he feared a rout

when markets reopen on Monday if a way forward was not agreed.

"It is blindingly obvious, we have to send a very clear signal... preferably
before the markets open,"
Mr Leterme had said in a live national
television interview before a shocked Belgian people.

The parties had to work out how to trim 11.3 billion euros ($15.58 billion)
off the deficit next year and about 20 billion euros ($27.58 billion) in all
by 2015.

The ultimatum came days after Mr Leterme's expected successor,
Elio Di Rupo, offered his resignation to Belgium's king,

frustrated at the failure of six-party talks to agree on a
deficit-cutting 2012 budget to avoid EU sanctions.

Albert II rejected the offer and sent Di Rupo back to work.

The ratings blow underlined a sharp escalation of the debt crisis
in a week in which even Germany struggled to raise finance.

Concern is growing that the euro currency, in the absence of
radical pan-eurozone action, is close to breaking point.

"The ability of authorities to respond to potential economic pressures from
inside and outside of Belgium... in our opinion is constrained by the
repeated failure of attempts to form a new government," the S&P
statement said.

After Greek, Portuguese and Irish bailouts, and
with Italy, Spain and France now under pressure,
it was more bad news for leaders struggling
in the absence of a European Central Bank
decision to mount a gigantic financial rescue.

The European Commission has repeatedly urged Belgium
to bring its public deficit below 3.0 per cent of GDP by 2012 -
or face a fine of about half a billion euros.

Finance Minister Didier Reynders blamed the downgrade on a
"global loss of confidence" in eurozone public finances,
while insisting that Belgium's creditworthiness remained
"one of the strongest in Europe".

Analysts said the news had wider significance.

"Belgium is the symbolic buffer
between the eurozone periphery and its core,
so this is a sign that the crisis -
slowly, but surely -

is striking at the heart of Europe,"

Sony Kapoor, head of the Re-Define think tank, told AFP.

Tourist killed, 3 kidnapped in Mali

GUNMEN burst into a restaurant
in Mali's most famous city of Timbuktu overnight,
grabbed four tourists dining there and executed one
when he refused to climb into their truck,
said a witness and an official who inspected the body.

The armed men entered the Amanar restaurant around 2.30pm on Friday
local time and pointed their guns at four tourists dining inside, said
Moussa Boubacar, a client at the restaurant.

The four followed the gunmen outside, but when the gunmen tried to
make them enter a vehicle, one of the tourists refused, Boubacar said.

The kidnappers opened fire, killing him on the spot, Boubacar said.

Their nationalities could not immediately be confirmed, but witnesses describe them
as European.

Dramane Diallo, the regional director of Timbuktu's civil protection division,
said that he rushed to the scene and found the corpse of an elderly white man,
who locals said was the tourist that had refused to enter the car.

Until a few years ago, Timbuktu was one of the most visited
destinations in Africa, but it is now one of the many former tourist
hotspots in Mali that have been deemed too dangerous to visit by foreign
embassies because of kidnappings by the local chapter of al-Qaeda.

The incident overnight comes after two French citizens were grabbed
in the middle of the night
from their hotel
in the Malian town of Hombori
on Thursday.

Neither kidnapping has yet been claimed by al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb,
or AQIM, whose members
have kidnapped and ransomed over 50 Europeans and
Canadians since 2003.

If Friday's kidnapping is by AQIM, it will mark the first time they have taken
a hostage inside of Timbuktu's city limits. Thursday's kidnapping would be
another first - the first time they have grabbed their victim south of the Niger River.

The group's footprint has grown dramatically since 2006, when the Algerian-led cell
first joined al-Qaeda. Security experts estimate the group has been able to raise around $US130 million ($134.04 million) from ransom payments alone.

COUNCIL of Europe inspectors have visited the Vatican to monitor its plans to tighten money laundering regulations.

The group from the Moneyval committee "met with representatives of
Vatican authorities dealing with the issue of prevention and fight
against money laundering and terrorist financing," a statement from the
Vatican said.

The group, composed of legal, financial and law enforcement experts
from five countries, arrived on Monday and left overnight, the statement said.

They are expected to present a report with their findings at a plenary session
of Moneyval "presumably in the middle of 2012," the Vatican said.

Pope Benedict XVI last December created a new financial authority
following an embarrassing investigation of Vatican bank officials by Italy.

The Vatican also approved a law from April imposing sentences of
up to 12 years in prison for money laundering
and 15 years for terrorist financing.

thumbs up

This Thread is about the Runt Continent Australia that is mostly Desert wasteland and what isn't desert wasteland is often flooded and about to be Volcanized!!!. Capiche? wave

For instance suzi wuzi/suze aka 'tru lilly/vera susa'; did you know:

Deserts comprise 1.3 million square miles or about 44% of the land area of Australia. thinking hmm wave

Australia’s Desert Country

One third of Australia’s land is desert. Australia has 10 deserts of which the largest is the Great Victoria Desert, covering just under 5 percent of the country. Ironically, the Great Victoria Desert is not located in Victoria but is in Western Australia and South Australia. The Great Victoria Desert covers 348,750 square kilometres which makes it around one and a half times bigger than the UK or slightly smaller than Montana.

How Big is Australia?
Australia is the word’s smallest continent

And if it isn't Desert Wasteland and flooded it's quaking, yes Suze, Australia is amongst the most unstable of Landmasses being part of the Ring of Fire.

Do you know any truths/facts? It doesn't seem so....hmmmmmmmmmmmm........

thinking hmm noway

Australia’s first recorded earthquake after white settlement occurred at Port Jackson, New South Wales in June, 1788 and lasted for about 3 seconds.

Other earthquakes recorded in early Australian history were:

■Hobart in 1827
■South Australia 1837
■Melbourne in 1841
■Perth in 1849.
The first recorded deaths in Australia caused by earthquakes occurred in 1902, at Warooka, South Australia. Two people died of shock after a Richter magnitude 6.0 earthquake.

A train line damaged by an earthquake
In 1917, one miner died and 5 were injured in an underground rock fall triggered by an earthquake in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.

In the last 80 years, there have been 17 earthquakes in Australia registering 6.0 or more on the Richter Scale. This is a rate of about one earthquake every five years, compared to the world average of about 140 per year.

Although the larger Australian earthquakes have caused significant damage, they are much smaller in strength than the world's most-damaging earthquakes. Until Newcastle's December 1989 earthquake, the damage caused by earthquakes in Australia had been comparatively low.

Quakes that Shook the Nation
Here is a list of some of the major earthquakes to have occured in Australia in recent times:

1 March 1954, Adelaide, South Australia
Adelaide was awakened by a loud rumbling sound. This was followed by shaking, severe enough to crack walls and loosen plaster and chimneys from many houses. Although minor compared to many overseas quakes, the Adelaide earthquake was (at magnitude 5.4) severe enough to cause damage estimated at $350 million (1997 values). No serious injuries were reported.

October 1968, Meckering, Western Australia
One of the more serious Australian earthquakes in fairly recent years occurred at the small town of Meckering. Residents reported seeing ground waves as well as experiencing difficulty when driving as the 6.9 Richter magnitude earthquake struck. Old buildings collapsed, railway lines were buckled and pipelines fractured, and a 37 kilometres long fault scarp (up to 2.5 metres high) was caused. Sixteen injuries were reported and the total cost of damage estimated $50 million.

22 January 1988, Tennant Creek, Northern Territory
Significant earthquakes of magnitudes 6.3, 6.4 and 6.8 occurred near Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. These resulted in large, long ground ruptures and a 35 kilometre fault (up to 2 metre displacement) which warped underground gas pipelines, but caused only minor damage to the hospital and some homes in the town.

28 December 1989, Newcastle, New South Wales
At 10.27am, Newcastle, Australia's sixth largest city, was partially devastated by a moderate earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter Scale. The Newcastle earthquake, the first lethal one in Australia, claimed 13 lives.

The devastation to buildings and other structures was extensive, which was unusual for a relatively-small magnitude earthquake. This was due mainly to an underlying, thin layer of alluvium, which appeared to magnify ground motion (shaking). The epicentre was located 15km West Southwest of the city centre, near Boolaroo.

August 1994, Ellalong, New South Wales
A damaging earthquake again affected the Hunter region of NSW, this time in the Ellalong-Cessnock area. Measuring 5.4 on the Richter Scale, it became our third most-damaging. Several homes, hotels and other buildings suffered seriously and up to 1,000 homes were partly damaged. Infrastructure, commercial and industrial losses also occurred. Insurance payouts were $38 million and total damage costs exceeded $150 million (1997 values).

The End of a Myth

A map showing the Earth's tectonic plates and
earthquake zones.
(see the text on the left for more information)
Despite Australia's seemingly low-risk situation in the middle of one of Earth's larger tectonic plates, we have had many earthquakes larger than that of Newcastle. The map to the right shows that Australia is in the middle of the Australian-Indian Plate.

The Australian Geological Survey Organisation in Canberra estimates that on average, the Australian region experiences an earthquake of at least this size, or larger, every 13-15 months.

Most of these earthquakes have been in low populated areas, so for many years people thought Australia could not be affected by this natural disaster. The Newcastle experience dispelled this myth!

Australian Geology
Due to Australia's geological position, we are prone to what seismologists call 'intra-plate' earthquakes.

These are different to the more familiar plate-margin earthquakes, common in areas like California in the USA and in Japan.

Is there a risk of a volcanic eruption in Australia ?

http://home.iprimus.com.au/foo7/volcmap.html

Mount Gambier ( Eastern South Australia ) Australia's youngest volcano.
A volcano filled with water. Erupted 4,500 years ago
"...volcanic activity must be considered a serious environmental hazard and risk for the Australian mainland. " Source: The risk of volcanic eruption in mainland Australia - E. B. Joyce.............................The Western Victorian Volcanic Plains are the third largest in the world and exceeded only by the Deccan in western India, and the Snake River Plateau in the United States ( Idaho-Nebraska ).

The Victorian Volcanic Plains are located in Western Victoria and covers over 2.3 million ha (10.36% of the State).
It stretches from Portland in the west to Craigieburn in the east and from Clunes in the north to Colac in the south.........................................“ There are around 400 volcanoes stretching from the Western District of Victoria into the Western Uplands around Ballarat wave and to the north of Melbourne around Kyneton and Kilmore, in some parts of the Eastern Uplands such as to the north of Benambra, and across to the South Australian border near Mt Gambier.
A volcanic eruption in the Western Uplands could potentially see lava flows and ash falls impacting on Melbourne.

There is also similar volcano risk present in various provinces in Far North Queensland, stretching from south-west of Townsville to near Cairns and up to Cooktown in the Far North. There are more than 380 volcanoes in total across this part of Queensland.
A future eruption in any of these regions would be unlikely to come from an existing volcano (as the volcanoes there are generally considered to be 'once only’ erupters).
Rather, future eruptions would occur at new sites nearby.
The geological record shows that new volcanoes in these areas have erupted perhaps every 2000 years in the past 40,000 years—and given there has not been a major eruption there for the past 5000 years, a significant eruption seems well overdue. " (3)

Morocco Islamists win landmark election

Morocco's moderate Islamists have won the most seats
in a landmark parliamentary election.

MOROCCO'S moderate
Islamists have won the most seats in a landmark
parliamentary election,
the latest
religious party to achieve
spectacular gains on the back of

the Arab Spring.

The Justice and Development Party (PJD) captured 80 seats in the
395-seat assembly,
nearly double the 45 seats won by Prime Minister
Abbas el Fassi's Indpendence Party,
Interior Minister Taib Cherkaoui
told a news conference on Saturday.

The win - the first parliamentary poll victory for the party -
comes just one month after
Islamists
won Tunisia's post-revolution election and
days before their
predicted surge in Egyptian polls.

According to the new constitution overwhelmingly approved in a July referendum,
King Mohammed VI must now pick the prime minister from the party which won
the most seats in parliament, instead of naming whomever he pleases.

The king, the latest scion of a monarchy that has ruled the country for
350 years, proposed changes to the constitution that curb some of his
near absolute powers as autocratic regimes toppled in nearby Tunisia,
Egypt,
and Libya.

Earlier on Saturday top PJD officials said their own figures showed
they had won over 100 seats in Friday's polls, the first since the
approval of the new constitution.

"We thank the Moroccans who voted for the PJD and we can only be satisfied,"
PJD secretary general Abdelilah Benkirane told reporters after the government
confirmed his party had won the most seats in the election.

He acknowledged his party would have to tailor its program to appease prospective
coalition partners and said
the PJD is "open to everyone" when it comes to forming alliances
.

"The nub of our program and of those who
will govern with us
will have a double axis
,
democracy and good governance," he told the France 24 television channel.

"From now on, Moroccans will feel that the state is at their service
and not the other way about," Benkirane added.
"That is very important for us."

The PJD has gradually increased its share of the vote in Morocco,
seen as one of the most stable countries in the region.

After winning just eight seats in 1997, it surged in popularity,
scooping 42 seats in the 2002 election, the first of King Mohammed VI's reign.

It then increased its share in the last election in 2007
when it finished second with 47 seats.

The party focused at first on
social issues, such as
opposition to summer music festivals and the sale of alcohol,
but has shifted to issues with broader voter appeal like the
fight against corruption and high unemployment.

During the current campaign it promised to cut poverty in half and raise the
minimum wage by 50 per cent.

Unlike the banned Islamist opposition group Justice and Charity,
the Justice and Development Party pledges its allegiance to the monarchy.

But Benkirane
cuts a controversial figure for previously
derogatory comments about Berber people and homosexuals.

In 2010 he tried to ban a concert in Morocco
by the openly gay singer Elton John
because of fears of
encouraging homosexuality.

The National Rally of Independents, the second-largest party in the
outgoing five-party government coalition, won 38 seats,
while the Party of Authenticity and Modernity,
founded in 2008 by people close to the king, got 33 seats.

So far only the Independence Party has said
it would be willing to govern with the Justice and Development Party.

The king proposed a new constitution on March 9, just 17 days after
thousands of people took to the streets across Morocco calling on him
to give up some of his powers in the biggest anti-establishment
protests in the country in decades.

Morocco's pro-reform February 20 protest movement, responsible for the protests,
had called on voters to boycott the elections. It says the constitutional reforms are
insufficient.

Voter turnout was 45.4 per cent, up from 37 per cent
from the last parliamentary election in 2007, but lower than the 51.6
per cent turnout recorded in 2002.

"This turnout, if confirmed, does not reflect enthusiasm for
the new constitution or political parties,
"
said Haizam Amirah Fernandez, senior analyst for the Arab world
at Spanish think tank Real Instituto Elcano.

In all, 31 parties competed for the 395 seats in the lower house of parliament -
with 60 seats reserved for women
and 30 set aside for candidates under the age of 40.
