COMMONWEALTH Ombudsman Allan Asher
is set to announce his resignation after admitting
he wrote questions for a Greens senator
to ask him in a Senate committee hearing.
Fairfax reports the Gillard government has made it clear it had
lost confidence in Mr Asher because he penned questions about
under-funding for Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young
to ask him in a senate committee hearing in May.
It said Mr Asher has met with Special Minister of State Gary Gray
to discuss his conduct where it was obvious relations between him
and the government were beyond repair.
On Monday, Mr Asher apologised to a Senate estimates committee for his
behaviour at an earlier hearing, saying it had been mistaken and he was
deeply sorry.
The paper said that while it would take a parliamentary vote to dismiss Mr Asher,
he was ready to step aside today in the face of the government's attitude.

The beginning of the beginning...
We must start at the very beginning. Even before the creation of the skies, the heavens and the earth.
Bereyshit. "In the beginning..." (Genesis 1:1).
The six Hebrew letters making up the opening word of the Bible, BeReYShiT, can be rearranged to spell out the words RoSh BaYiT, "the Head of the House".
Because first in mind -- even before the creation of the actual universe -- there was a vision of a House. Long before humans started building houses for themselves, as God began building worlds, there was already a vision of the ultimate House: the House of God, the Holy Temple on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. In the words of Jacob, speaking of this place: "This is the House of God and this is the Gate of Heaven" (Genesis 28:17).
This House is the summit of all creation. The purpose of the entire creation is to reveal the beauty and perfection of God to His creatures. The Temple raises our eyes to that perfection. For the Temple directs our eyes beyond transient worldliness towards heavenly truth. This House comes to join Earth back to Heaven. The Temple is the place where Earth meets Heaven. It is the very Gate of Heaven.
The Holy Temple in Jerusalem comes to show and reveal that the loving God is the Head of the House, RoSh BaYiT, Ruler over the Universe. And that the whole world is a "House" -- a planned, ordered, intelligently-built structure -- in and through which God's divinity is revealed to all the inhabitants of the world.
It was from the earth of this place in Jerusalem that Adam was formed. For it is the destiny of his children -- all humanity -- to worship at this House.
After Noah was saved from the flood, it was in this place that he sacrificed.
This is the mountain where Abraham came to sacrifice Isaac.
This is the "field" to which Isaac returned to meditate.
This is the place where Jacob lay down and dreamed of a ladder stretching up to heaven. This is the place he called "the House of God".
This place King David knew to be the place of the Temple, and he prepared for its construction by King Solomon.
The Solomon's Temple stood there for 410 years until it was destroyed.
The Second Temple stood there for 420 years until it was destroyed.
For more than 1928 years since the destruction of the Second Temple, Jews have yearned and prayed daily for the rebuilding of the Temple.
Here on this exact same spot, the Third Temple is destined to be rebuilt.
We are waiting for it. We need it. "If the nations of the world had understood how valuable the Holy Temple was for them they would have surrounded it with troops and fortifications to guard it" (Bemidbar Rabbah 1:3). For only when all mankind will unite to worship God at this Temple will it be possible to join the earth back to heaven. And only then will mankind be able to live in harmony with the environment.
In the beginning...
BeReYShiT. That vision of the House was the beginning of creation. And then came the actual creation of all that is required to make it possible to build that House: the heavens and the earth: the sun, the moon, the stars; the land, the sea, the plants and trees, the fish, the birds and animals...
And finally God said: "Let us make man in our form and likeness, and they will rule over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the skies, over the animals and over all the earth and every creature on it."
And God created man in His own likeness. He created them male and female. And God blessed them and said to them: "Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and conquer it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the sky and all the living creatures that swarm over the earth."
And God planted a garden of delight. He caused the earth to sprout forth every kind of lovely tree. And the tree of life in the midst of the garden. And the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
God took Adam and Eve and placed them in this Garden of Eden to tend it and keep it. And God ordered the man: "You may eat freely from every tree in the garden. Except for the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. For on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die."
But Adam and Eve ate from the tree....
And God said to Adam: "Because you ate from the tree from which I ordered you not to eat, the ground is cursed for you. You will have to toil in order to eat from it all the days of your life. The earth will bring up thorns and thistles, and you will eat the herb of the field. With the sweat of your face you will eat bread, until you go back to the ground. Because that is where you were taken from: you are dust, and to dust you will return."
And God said: "See, the man has become like one of us to know good and evil. And now, so that he should not put his hand out and also take from the Tree of Life and eat and live for ever...."
God drove man out from the Garden of Eden to tend the earth from which he was taken. And God placed angels and a fiery sword to guard the way to the Tree of Life. (Genesis ch's 1-3).
Where is that Garden?
Where is that enchanted garden? Will we ever see it again? In this world? Or in some other?
In Eden, everything Adam needed was instantly available. All he had to do was pick the fruit off the trees. But having been driven out of Eden, he was forced to fend for himself.
Ever since then, men have writhed and struggled to find easier ways of making a living so as to circumvent the curse and enjoy this world a little before dying and returning to the dust.
One of the things that most distinguishes man from God's other creatures is the intelligence with which he is able to make and use tools and artifacts that can aid him in this goal. Over the millennia, as human technology has become ever more ambitious, so the corresponding forms of economic and social organization have become more and more complex.
No matter how complex the technology and social organization, everything required to sustain human life ultimately derives from the surrounding God-given natural environment. Yet the more advanced our technology and society, the more man-made our surroundings become -- and the more cut-off we seem to be from nature.
For thousands of years the great majority of the population lived on the land, close to nature -- many of them quite literally fulfilling the curse of Adam, toiling and sweating to extract food from the ground. But the ever-accelerating technological revolution of the last few hundred years has caused a corresponding revolution in socioeconomic organization that has totally shifted the focus from the country to the city.
Today's urban agglomerations not only provide homes for their enormous concentrations of population. They also serve as the location for most of the industrial and economic activity that provides the goods and services, the educational infrastructure that produces the manpower and know-how, the communications media that keep everyone informed and involved in the system, and the governmental and other bodies charged with overall coordination and control.
Urbanization is a major global trend. Of the 5.8 billion people currently living on this earth, just over half still live away from cities. But the other half are now urbanized. It is expected that within twenty-five years, two thirds of the world's population may be living in cities. Three quarters of the population of the United States already live in cities.
Contemporary city civilization
Our contemporary urban technology-and-media-based civilization transcends traditional geographic, political, racial and cultural boundaries. It has established itself as the dominant civilization throughout the world. Few if any aboriginal or pre-industrial people remain who are not under the rule of some city-based government and subject to modern urban technological and cultural influences. No matter where in the world you are -- even on a desert island, even in outer space -- all you have to do is turn on your radio and you are in instant touch with the latest news, stock prices, fashions, sports, entertainment, books, albums, websites and anything else you want.
The claim of this civilization to world ascendancy is based first and foremost on its amazing capacity to generate wealth. The success of countries and their governments is measured by their ability to ensure this abundance for everyone -- or at least for enough of the population not to let the have-nots get out of hand. Material consumption is a goal that unites people of all nations, races, beliefs and cultures: east, west, north and south.
Contemporary city civilization is a unique solution to Adam's predicament of how to survive and enjoy, providing ever more refined ways of satisfying an infinite array of secondary whims and desires. With a pampered palate, all modern comforts, technology beeping and flashing all around you, entertainment at the press of a button, endless opportunities for shopping, amusement, education, culture, sports and more and more... you could easily imagine this IS paradise!
The effect on the earth
It is surely a desirable goal to seek to satisfy everyone's basic needs and provide them with as many true comforts and conveniences as possible. Indeed, with wise organization and self-restraint, the whole world could be amply provided for without any danger to the environment.
But our current methods of trying to satisfy the world population's basic needs and sustain the sophisticated lifestyle of the more prosperous are causing the depletion of natural resources and degradation of the global environment at a rate that will make it impossible for humanity to carry on in the same way for more than a generation or two. The danger to the environment is clear to anyone willing to take even a brief glance at some of the information gathered by environmental monitoring agencies.
With about 80 million people added to the world population each year, food security -- measured in the level of carryover stocks of grain -- has dropped to an all-time low.
Uncontaminated water is now a scarce resource even in countries once considered rich in water resources.
Deforestation continues unabated.
Thousands and thousands of plant, fish, bird and animal species have become or are becoming extinct.
Record levels of carbon emissions from fossil fuel burning are thought to be one of the main factors in overall global warming that has already caused billions of dollars worth of losses in the last few years because of weather-related disasters, and could lead to major worldwide economic, social and environment dislocations in the future.
Mortality is on the rise in many countries, and more and more people are suffering from pollution-related diseases.

Thousands of years after Adam's expulsion from paradise, mankind is more out of harmony with the environment than ever.
It is an ironic twist to a continuing saga. Adam was expelled from paradise for an act of excess, uncontrolled consumption, eating the extra fruit he was not allowed. And it is the excess, uncontrolled production and consumption habits of his sophisticated present-day descendants that are destroying the very earth we are entrusted to guard.
The effect on the human spirit
Quite apart from what contemporary civilization is doing to the physical environment, its effect on the minds and souls of those who live in it are just as devastating if harder to measure.
Charlie Chaplin in "Modern Times" graphically portrayed the crushing effects of industrialization on human dignity. That was back in the 1920's -- before people had been subjected to the full intensity of the contemporary city experience: unremitting heavy traffic, constant overhead aircraft, bulldozers, drilling, blaring sirens, alarms, amplifiers, phones, beepers, flashing lights, information overflow....
Contemporary civilization is the most technologically sophisticated and economically prosperous that ever was. Never before have so many people enjoyed such comforts and conveniences. Yet the commonest problems brought today to doctors and psychiatrists are depression, fatigue, hypertension, fear and anxiety!
The incidence of murder, violence, crime, sexual immorality, drug abuse and the like in the world's major cities is appalling. Subtler problems like the hyperactivity, attention-deficit and other behavioral problems so widespread among youth may seem less horrifying. Yet they could be signs of overall mental degeneration in our civilization.
It is hardly surprising that so many people in our culture show signs of wanting to escape. Some travel the globe in search of a different world, one that is more humane and serene. Others try to escape by turning inwards, or by blasting themselves with frenetic music, mind-altering drugs, muscle pumping and other forms of intensity. Among the most persistent themes in many present-day sub-cultures are anger, defiance and nihilism. But the majority seek solace from the pressures of modern life through the compulsive pursuit of material gratification, resulting in the food, sex, shopping, smoking, drinking, gambling and other addictions rife in our societies.
Alienation from Nature
All the resources required to maintain our contemporary consumerist civilization ultimately derive from the natural environment. Yet this selfsame culture tends to foster a myopic lack of awareness of nature that is one of the major factors causing people not only to ignore the continuing destruction of the environment but actively to contribute to it.
Urban living and contemporary technology cut people off from nature physically and mentally. The physical spaces where most of the urban population spend their lives -- houses, apartment blocks, roads, shops, offices, factories, schools, public facilities, cars, buses, trains, planes -- are all man-made. People are surrounded by man-made objects, artifacts and equipment of all kinds.
Even more enveloping are the man-made communications media, which for most of the population are the main source of information about the wider world as well as entertainment and culture. TV's, radios, papers, magazines, promotion and advertising surround us from childhood to old age. We may not be obliged to pay attention to them. But the sophistication with which they capture people's attention make them the determining influence molding the outlook and consciousness of the overwhelming majority of the population.
For many people, watching images on a screen is far more compelling than looking directly at their actual surroundings (which they may in any case find uninteresting or depressing). Audio output from speakers or headphones is far more involving than the real, live sounds all around (which may include a high proportion of meaningless technology-generated noise.) Media hypnosis thus engenders in people a glazed detachment from their own direct experience of the actual world around them through their eyes, ears and other senses, making them all but unaware of the sky, the trees and plants, birds, insects and other living creatures found even in cities.
The scale and economics of the media ensure that they remain the mouthpiece of entrenched interests in a system geared not so much to satisfying people's true needs as to arousing their material appetites. This is what makes the sales that create the profits that oil the system. The implicit message of the promotion that bombards us everywhere is: "You, the consumer, are king. The entire world is a giant smorgasbord of thrilling products, services and opportunities of every kind, all laid on for YOUR pleasure and delight. Just take and enjoy! Don't wait! Have it NOW! Buy! Special offer! Better value! More for less! Free gifts! Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die!"
The majority of the population are swept along by the general tide of consumerism, sparing little thought for the collective effect of their own and everyone else's individual acts of excess and waste on the wider global environment.
At least this mindless folly is slightly more forgivable than the frantic pollution of the environment and destruction of irreplaceable resources perpetrated by profit-hungry businessmen, major corporations and indeed some of the very governments that talk about the need for greater public awareness and stricter controls.
Taking responsibility
A civilization hell-bent on a lifestyle that is environmentally unsustainable and destructive is sick.
We must therefore thank God that more and more sensitive, thoughtful and responsible people are profoundly disturbed and pained at the spectacle of contemporary man destroying himself and the world, and are asking what we should do about it.
Perhaps there are animals that eat their fill and then move on leaving a trail of filth and waste behind them. But man has a higher destiny. We are the recipients of God's special blessing: "Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and conquer it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the sky and all the living creatures that swarm over the earth."
"Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and conquer it." God wants a large human population, for such a multitude of souls -- each one different, each unique -- attests to the glory of the Creator. But only if the population is made up of truly dignified, refined human beings who not only take from the world and consume but also give. Man's mission is to conquer his selfish, animal instincts so as to develop his innate divinity and serve -- give and contribute of himself in order to bring this world to perfection and turn it back into the beautiful, harmonious garden it was created to be.
"Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the sky and all the living creatures that swarm over the earth." The blessing applies to all of Adam's descendants. It applies to us. We are the guardians of the Earth and all the different life-forms and species it contains.
As we witness the destruction of the environment and see thousands of species of plants and animals becoming extinct, we must ask ourselves: How are we fulfilling our role? How are we discharging our responsibility?
One could easily be discouraged from even starting to think about what to do to improve the world. The odds against succeeding seem so great. True, more and more people are waking up to the responsibility we bear. But we are numerically few compared to the great majority of the world population who don't seem to care at all. What power do we have against the massive forces that are destroying the world? How can we have any significant effect?
Yet we are not at liberty to cast off our responsibility. The Talmud teaches: "Every single person is a whole unique world. And therefore every person is obliged to say, The entire world was created only for me" (Sanhedrin 37a). "If so," said Rebbe Nachman of Breslov, "then it is up to me to consider carefully at all times what I must do in order to improve the world..." (Likutey Moharan Pt I, 5:1).
The way we discharge our responsibility will determine the kind of world we will live in when we are older and the kind of world we will leave to our children and children's children.
So what are we supposed to do?
Experts are crying out about the destruction of the environment. Pressure groups lobby. International organizations pass resolutions. Governments introduce legislation. Corporations speak piously about their commitment to the environment. Yet the practical measures being taken have hardly begun to turn the tide of abuse and destruction.
Why should this be? If we are so sophisticated and intelligent, why are we unable to solve our problems?
Could it be because the problems are caused by our very intelligence itself, which has outstripped our ability to control and direct it for good and not evil?
It is not our technology that is bringing us to grief so much as the shortsightedness and greed with which it is applied. Man has created a formidable technological and socio-economic apparatus to satisfy his needs. But so far he has not had the sense to keep it under the proper control in order not to destroy himself and the world in the process.
It is an old, old problem. It goes right back to Adam, who through a failure of self-control ate from the forbidden tree of knowledge and was driven out of paradise.
It was because Adam took the fruit for himself against God's command that he was cursed with having to go out into the world and fend for himself.
"You want to be so clever? You don't want to submit to a higher wisdom that says thus far but no further? Then go out and learn for yourself! Try to do everything by yourself. Rely only on your own human intelligence. Make all the mistakes you want. Until in the end you will come to grief. And then you will realize that, wise as you are, you are still not wise enough to work everything out by yourself....
"The whole world is a gift to you. But it comes with God's book of instructions. Without them, nothing will work properly. Go back and do things the way God advises -- and then you will see that everything will work out!"
The Torah
If we truly desire to discharge our responsibility for the world, we have an obligation to search out what God advises for its welfare, as prescribed in His teaching to mankind, the Torah.
However, we should not expect to find there a point-by-point scheme for saving the environment along the lines of some human-devised plan. For the issue is not merely how to stave off the destruction of the environment for just that little bit longer so that humanity can simply continue pursuing exactly the same materialistic aims as today with only a modicum of extra prudence.
Man's materialistic preoccupations keep him from his true destiny. The Torah therefore comes to wean us from them, leading us on a higher, spiritual pathway where the question is not "What can I get out of the world for myself?" but "What are my obligations? How can I contribute? What can I give?"
As more and more people cultivate an attitude of responsibility and giving instead of only grabbing and taking, it will automatically become easier to introduce the economic and social changes necessary to preserve the environment and ensure long-term human survival.
By talking to each other about such an attitude and encouraging as many people as we have the power to influence to adopt it, we are contributing to and strengthening a new current that is already spreading more and more widely, and has the power to bring the entire world to greater sanity.
Let us therefore put the question of environmental responsibility in a broader perspective by asking: What does the Torah teach about how mankind should relate to the God-given world of nature that provides the grand setting for our civilization as a whole and for the lives of every one of us in it?
How does the Torah teach us to relate to nature?
The only way we can gain a proper perspective on this vital question from our standpoint within an ailing civilization is by endeavoring to step outside.
Let us therefore turn for insight to a band of teachers very different from the urbane experts and specialists of today. They were sky-gazers, meditators, daveners, dreamers, story-tellers, singers, sages, saints, mystics, prophets, founding fathers and leaders of humanity. Some may be famous and familiar from history and literature. Yet however much we know about them, we really do not know them at all.
The extensive Torah library provides a rich treasury of teachings about nature from many different saints and sages from Biblical, Mishnaic and Talmudic times until today. We will draw from very many of them, and especially from the Master Sage, Rebbe Nachman, who is the soul breathing life into this whole excursion. Rebbe Nachman will be close by during the whole journey from beginning to end.
But the journey will be a long one if we are to cover the ground thoroughly. We will have to take it in stages. There will be four main stages of this journey, and in each one we will look for special insight to one leading guide. Of the four main guides, three are the three founding fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, while the fourth is David, Sweet Singer of Israel.
The common tie binding them together is that all four sought to rectify the sin that drove Adam out of the Garden. In order to restore harmony between man and God, between Earth and Heaven. Only this way can man live in harmony with the world around him. Only this way can mankind survive. Only this way can we get back into the Garden.
All four knew that the success of the entire venture ultimately depends upon one thing: the actualization of the House that was the first thought of the entire creation, "In the beginning" -- BeReYShiT -- RoSh BaYiT, the "Head House": a single place of worship to which all of mankind will turn in unity.
The Mountain, the Field and the House
Said Rabbi Elazar: What does Isaiah mean when he says, "And many peoples will go and say, 'Come let us go up to the Mountain of God to the House of the God of Jacob!'" ? Why the God of Jacob and not the God of Abraham and Isaac? The answer is: Not like Abraham, who saw it as a Mountain ("as it is said this day, On the Mountain HaVaYaH is seen" -- Genesis 22:14). And not like Isaac, for whom it was a Field ("And Isaac went out to meditate in the Field" -- Genesis 24:63). But like Jacob, who called it a House: "And he called the name of that place Beth El, the House of God" (Genesis 28:19).

It was to this focus of worship for all mankind that Abraham aspired when he journeyed to the mountain to sacrifice Isaac. Only for Abraham, it was and remained a mountain -- a high, forbidding place out of the reach of most people.
Having been bound at that spot, Isaac went back there again and again to meditate, pray and plan for the realization of the dream. Isaac made it a habit. He brought it nearer. For Isaac it was a field, a place in which to labor and work towards the vision. Fields are more useful to most people than mountains. The concept of a field is one people can more easily grasp than that of a mountain.
Yet a field is still not a place of human habitation to the same extent that a house is. Everybody needs a house to live in. Everyone can understand the idea of a house.
It was as a House that Jacob conceived the Temple: a House of Prayer. And it is as a House of Prayer that it will become graspable and meaningful to all humanity.
"I will bring them to My holy Mountain and make them rejoice in My House of Prayer. Their sacrifices and peace-offerings will find favor on My altar. For My House will be called the House of Prayer for all the nations" (Isaiah 56,7).
David's messianic mission was to spread the teaching of prayer to all mankind. Thus it was Jacob's concept of a House that David sought to actualize and build in his city of Jerusalem.
And it is this House that will be built quickly in the near future when Mashiach, son of David, leads the building of the third, final, eternal House, the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. And then all mankind will unite in the service of God and the world will come to perfection.
The progression from the concept of an entirely natural Mountain to that of a human-cultivated Field and finally that of a totally man-constructed House corresponds to mankind's progression from the time Adam first stepped out into the unspoiled God-given world of nature through thousands of years of agrarian living to the super-sophisticated man-constructed scientific-technological-urban civilization we live in today.
The Mountain is symbolic of the raw, God-given, natural environment. The Field represents the primary place of interaction between man and his environment: man has to dig, sow and manipulate the Earth in other ways in order to exploit the God-given resources so as to feed himself and provide his other needs.
But when it comes to actually eating, drinking, resting, relaxing and enjoying, people's first choice is the "House" -- whether their own homes or the other man-made buildings and structures in which we go about our various daily activities.
Men have built houses and more houses and more houses... until the Earth is filling up with bigger and bigger cities, the urban agglomerations that constitute the main centers of contemporary civilization.
The paradox is that this man-made civilization is now destroying the natural environment that is the very basis of its life. This is a civilization that is out of harmony with the environment.
Only through the sacred House that Jacob saw and the Son of David will build soon in Jerusalem, the Holy City, will it become possible to make peace and restore harmony between man and his human-constructed, technology-based, house-centered, citified world on the one hand, and the surrounding God-created, God-given world of nature on the other.
May this House be built quickly in our time. Amen.

The beginning of the beginning...
We must start at the very beginning. Even before the creation of the skies, the heavens and the earth.
Bereyshit. "In the beginning..." (Genesis 1:1).
The six Hebrew letters making up the opening word of the Bible, BeReYShiT, can be rearranged to spell out the words RoSh BaYiT, "the Head of the House".
Because first in mind -- even before the creation of the actual universe -- there was a vision of a House. Long before humans started building houses for themselves, as God began building worlds, there was already a vision of the ultimate House: the House of God, the Holy Temple on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. In the words of Jacob, speaking of this place: "This is the House of God and this is the Gate of Heaven" (Genesis 28:17).
This House is the summit of all creation. The purpose of the entire creation is to reveal the beauty and perfection of God to His creatures. The Temple raises our eyes to that perfection. For the Temple directs our eyes beyond transient worldliness towards heavenly truth. This House comes to join Earth back to Heaven. The Temple is the place where Earth meets Heaven. It is the very Gate of Heaven.
The Holy Temple in Jerusalem comes to show and reveal that the loving God is the Head of the House, RoSh BaYiT, Ruler over the Universe. God drove man out from the Garden of Eden to tend the earth from which he was taken. And God placed angels and a fiery sword to guard the way to the Tree of Life. (Genesis ch's 1-3).
Where is that Garden?
Where is that enchanted garden? Will we ever see it again? In this world? Or in some other?
In Eden, everything Adam needed was instantly available. All he had to do was pick the fruit off the trees. But having been driven out of Eden, he was forced to fend for himself.
Ever since then, men have writhed and struggled to find easier ways of making a living so as to circumvent the curse and enjoy this world a little before dying and returning to the dust.
One of the things that most distinguishes man from God's other creatures is the intelligence with which he is able to make and use tools and artifacts that can aid him in this goal. Over the millennia, as human technology has become ever more ambitious, so the corresponding forms of economic and social organization have become more and more complex.
No matter how complex the technology and social organization, everything required to sustain human life ultimately derives from the surrounding God-given natural environment. Yet the more advanced our technology and society, the more man-made our surroundings become -- and the more cut-off we seem to be from nature.
For thousands of years the great majority of the population lived on the land, close to nature -- many of them quite literally fulfilling the curse of Adam, toiling and sweating to extract food from the ground. But the ever-accelerating technological revolution of the last few hundred years has caused a corresponding revolution in socioeconomic organization that has totally shifted the focus from the country to the city.
Today's urban agglomerations not only provide homes for their enormous concentrations of population. They also serve as the location for most of the industrial and economic activity that provides the goods and services, the educational infrastructure that produces the manpower and know-how, the communications media that keep everyone informed and involved in the system, and the governmental and other bodies charged with overall coordination and control.
Urbanization is a major global trend. Of the 5.8 billion people currently living on this earth, just over half still live away from cities. But the other half are now urbanized. It is expected that within twenty-five years, two thirds of the world's population may be living in cities. Three quarters of the population of the United States already live in cities.
Contemporary city civilization
Our contemporary urban technology-and-media-based civilization transcends traditional geographic, political, racial and cultural boundaries. It has established itself as the dominant civilization throughout the world. Few if any aboriginal or pre-industrial people remain who are not under the rule of some city-based government and subject to modern urban technological and cultural influences. No matter where in the world you are -- even on a desert island, even in outer space -- all you have to do is turn on your radio and you are in instant touch with the latest news, stock prices, fashions, sports, entertainment, books, albums, websites and anything else you want.
The claim of this civilization to world ascendancy is based first and foremost on its amazing capacity to generate wealth. The success of countries and their governments is measured by their ability to ensure this abundance for everyone -- or at least for enough of the population not to let the have-nots get out of hand. Material consumption is a goal that unites people of all nations, races, beliefs and cultures: east, west, north and south.
Contemporary city civilization is a unique solution to Adam's predicament of how to survive and enjoy, providing ever more refined ways of satisfying an infinite array of secondary whims and desires. With a pampered palate, all modern comforts, technology beeping and flashing all around you, entertainment at the press of a button, endless opportunities for shopping, amusement, education, culture, sports and more and more... you could easily imagine this IS paradise!
The effect on the earth
It is surely a desirable goal to seek to satisfy everyone's basic needs and provide them with as many true comforts and conveniences as possible. Indeed, with wise organization and self-restraint, the whole world could be amply provided for without any danger to the environment.
But our current methods of trying to satisfy the world population's basic needs and sustain the sophisticated lifestyle of the more prosperous are causing the depletion of natural resources and degradation of the global environment at a rate that will make it impossible for humanity to carry on in the same way for more than a generation or two. The danger to the environment is clear to anyone willing to take even a brief glance at some of the information gathered by environmental monitoring agencies.
With about 80 million people added to the world population each year, food security -- measured in the level of carryover stocks of grain -- has dropped to an all-time low.
Uncontaminated water is now a scarce resource even in countries once considered rich in water resources.
Deforestation continues unabated.
Thousands and thousands of plant, fish, bird and animal species have become or are becoming extinct.
Record levels of carbon emissions from fossil fuel burning are thought to be one of the main factors in overall global warming that has already caused billions of dollars worth of losses in the last few years because of weather-related disasters, and could lead to major worldwide economic, social and environment dislocations in the future.
Mortality is on the rise in many countries, and more and more people are suffering from pollution-related diseases.

Thousands of years after Adam's expulsion from paradise, mankind is more out of harmony with the environment than ever.
It is an ironic twist to a continuing saga. Adam was expelled from paradise for an act of excess, uncontrolled consumption, eating the extra fruit he was not allowed. And it is the excess, uncontrolled production and consumption habits of his sophisticated present-day descendants that are destroying the very earth we are entrusted to guard.
The effect on the human spirit
Quite apart from what contemporary civilization is doing to the physical environment, its effect on the minds and souls of those who live in it are just as devastating if harder to measure.
Charlie Chaplin in "Modern Times" graphically portrayed the crushing effects of industrialization on human dignity. That was back in the 1920's -- before people had been subjected to the full intensity of the contemporary city experience: unremitting heavy traffic, constant overhead aircraft, bulldozers, drilling, blaring sirens, alarms, amplifiers, phones, beepers, flashing lights, information overflow....
Contemporary civilization is the most technologically sophisticated and economically prosperous that ever was. Never before have so many people enjoyed such comforts and conveniences. Yet the commonest problems brought today to doctors and psychiatrists are depression, fatigue, hypertension, fear and anxiety!
The incidence of murder, violence, crime, sexual immorality, drug abuse and the like in the world's major cities is appalling. Subtler problems like the hyperactivity, attention-deficit and other behavioral problems so widespread among youth may seem less horrifying. Yet they could be signs of overall mental degeneration in our civilization.
It is hardly surprising that so many people in our culture show signs of wanting to escape. Some travel the globe in search of a different world, one that is more humane and serene. Others try to escape by turning inwards, or by blasting themselves with frenetic music, mind-altering drugs, muscle pumping and other forms of intensity. Among the most persistent themes in many present-day sub-cultures are anger, defiance and nihilism. But the majority seek solace from the pressures of modern life through the compulsive pursuit of material gratification, resulting in the food, sex, shopping, smoking, drinking, gambling and other addictions rife in our societies.
Alienation from Nature
All the resources required to maintain our contemporary consumerist civilization ultimately derive from the natural environment. Yet this selfsame culture tends to foster a myopic lack of awareness of nature that is one of the major factors causing people not only to ignore the continuing destruction of the environment but actively to contribute to it.
Urban living and contemporary technology cut people off from nature physically and mentally. The physical spaces where most of the urban population spend their lives -- houses, apartment blocks, roads, shops, offices, factories, schools, public facilities, cars, buses, trains, planes -- are all man-made. People are surrounded by man-made objects, artifacts and equipment of all kinds.
Even more enveloping are the man-made communications media, which for most of the population are the main source of information about the wider world as well as entertainment and culture. TV's, radios, papers, magazines, promotion and advertising surround us from childhood to old age. We may not be obliged to pay attention to them. But the sophistication with which they capture people's attention make them the determining influence molding the outlook and consciousness of the overwhelming majority of the population.
For many people, watching images on a screen is far more compelling than looking directly at their actual surroundings (which they may in any case find uninteresting or depressing). Audio output from speakers or headphones is far more involving than the real, live sounds all around (which may include a high proportion of meaningless technology-generated noise.) Media hypnosis thus engenders in people a glazed detachment from their own direct experience of the actual world around them through their eyes, ears and other senses, making them all but unaware of the sky, the trees and plants, birds, insects and other living creatures found even in cities.
The scale and economics of the media ensure that they remain the mouthpiece of entrenched interests in a system geared not so much to satisfying people's true needs as to arousing their material appetites. This is what makes the sales that create the profits that oil the system. The implicit message of the promotion that bombards us everywhere is: "You, the consumer, are king. The entire world is a giant smorgasbord of thrilling products, services and opportunities of every kind, all laid on for YOUR pleasure and delight. Just take and enjoy! Don't wait! Have it NOW! Buy! Special offer! Better value! More for less! Free gifts! Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die!"
The majority of the population are swept along by the general tide of consumerism, sparing little thought for the collective effect of their own and everyone else's individual acts of excess and waste on the wider global environment.
At least this mindless folly is slightly more forgivable than the frantic pollution of the environment and destruction of irreplaceable resources perpetrated by profit-hungry businessmen, major corporations and indeed some of the very governments that talk about the need for greater public awareness and stricter controls.
Taking responsibility
A civilization hell-bent on a lifestyle that is environmentally unsustainable and destructive is sick.
We must therefore thank God that more and more sensitive, thoughtful and responsible people are profoundly disturbed and pained at the spectacle of contemporary man destroying himself and the world, and are asking what we should do about it.
Perhaps there are animals that eat their fill and then move on leaving a trail of filth and waste behind them. But man has a higher destiny. We are the recipients of God's special blessing: "Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and conquer it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the sky and all the living creatures that swarm over the earth."
"Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and conquer it." God wants a large human population, for such a multitude of souls -- each one different, each unique -- attests to the glory of the Creator. But only if the population is made up of truly dignified, refined human beings who not only take from the world and consume but also give. Man's mission is to conquer his selfish, animal instincts so as to develop his innate divinity and serve -- give and contribute of himself in order to bring this world to perfection and turn it back into the beautiful, harmonious garden it was created to be.
"Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the sky and all the living creatures that swarm over the earth." The blessing applies to all of Adam's descendants. It applies to us. We are the guardians of the Earth and all the different life-forms and species it contains.
As we witness the destruction of the environment and see thousands of species of plants and animals becoming extinct, we must ask ourselves: How are we fulfilling our role? How are we discharging our responsibility?
One could easily be discouraged from even starting to think about what to do to improve the world. The odds against succeeding seem so great. True, more and more people are waking up to the responsibility we bear. But we are numerically few compared to the great majority of the world population who don't seem to care at all. What power do we have against the massive forces that are destroying the world? How can we have any significant effect?
Yet we are not at liberty to cast off our responsibility. The Talmud teaches: "Every single person is a whole unique world. And therefore every person is obliged to say, The entire world was created only for me" (Sanhedrin 37a). "If so," said Rebbe Nachman of Breslov, "then it is up to me to consider carefully at all times what I must do in order to improve the world..." (Likutey Moharan Pt I, 5:1).
The way we discharge our responsibility will determine the kind of world we will live in when we are older and the kind of world we will leave to our children and children's children.
So what are we supposed to do?
Experts are crying out about the destruction of the environment. Pressure groups lobby. International organizations pass resolutions. Governments introduce legislation. Corporations speak piously about their commitment to the environment. Yet the practical measures being taken have hardly begun to turn the tide of abuse and destruction.
Why should this be? If we are so sophisticated and intelligent, why are we unable to solve our problems?
Could it be because the problems are caused by our very intelligence itself, which has outstripped our ability to control and direct it for good and not evil?
It is not our technology that is bringing us to grief so much as the shortsightedness and greed with which it is applied. Man has created a formidable technological and socio-economic apparatus to satisfy his needs. But so far he has not had the sense to keep it under the proper control in order not to destroy himself and the world in the process.
It is an old, old problem. It goes right back to Adam, who through a failure of self-control ate from the forbidden tree of knowledge and was driven out of paradise.
It was because Adam took the fruit for himself against God's command that he was cursed with having to go out into the world and fend for himself.
"You want to be so clever? You don't want to submit to a higher wisdom that says thus far but no further? Then go out and learn for yourself! Try to do everything by yourself. Rely only on your own human intelligence. Make all the mistakes you want. Until in the end you will come to grief. And then you will realize that, wise as you are, you are still not wise enough to work everything out by yourself....
"The whole world is a gift to you. But it comes with God's book of instructions. Without them, nothing will work properly. Go back and do things the way God advises -- and then you will see that everything will work out!"
The Torah
If we truly desire to discharge our responsibility for the world, we have an obligation to search out what God advises for its welfare, as prescribed in His teaching to mankind, the Torah.
However, we should not expect to find there a point-by-point scheme for saving the environment along the lines of some human-devised plan. For the issue is not merely how to stave off the destruction of the environment for just that little bit longer so that humanity can simply continue pursuing exactly the same materialistic aims as today with only a modicum of extra prudence.
Man's materialistic preoccupations keep him from his true destiny. The Torah therefore comes to wean us from them, leading us on a higher, spiritual pathway where the question is not "What can I get out of the world for myself?" but "What are my obligations? How can I contribute? What can I give?"
As more and more people cultivate an attitude of responsibility and giving instead of only grabbing and taking, it will automatically become easier to introduce the economic and social changes necessary to preserve the environment and ensure long-term human survival.
By talking to each other about such an attitude and encouraging as many people as we have the power to influence to adopt it, we are contributing to and strengthening a new current that is already spreading more and more widely, and has the power to bring the entire world to greater sanity.
Let us therefore put the question of environmental responsibility in a broader perspective by asking: What does the Torah teach about how mankind should relate to the God-given world of nature that provides the grand setting for our civilization as a whole and for the lives of every one of us in it?
How does the Torah teach us to relate to nature?
The only way we can gain a proper perspective on this vital question from our standpoint within an ailing civilization is by endeavoring to step outside.
Let us therefore turn for insight to a band of teachers very different from the urbane experts and specialists of today. They were sky-gazers, meditators, daveners, dreamers, story-tellers, singers, sages, saints, mystics, prophets, founding fathers and leaders of humanity. Some may be famous and familiar from history and literature. Yet however much we know about them, we really do not know them at all.
The extensive Torah library provides a rich treasury of teachings about nature from many different saints and sages from Biblical, Mishnaic and Talmudic times until today. We will draw from very many of them, and especially from the Master Sage, Rebbe Nachman, who is the soul breathing life into this whole excursion. Rebbe Nachman will be close by during the whole journey from beginning to end.
But the journey will be a long one if we are to cover the ground thoroughly. We will have to take it in stages. There will be four main stages of this journey, and in each one we will look for special insight to one leading guide. Of the four main guides, three are the three founding fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, while the fourth is David, Sweet Singer of Israel.
The common tie binding them together is that all four sought to rectify the sin that drove Adam out of the Garden. In order to restore harmony between man and God, between Earth and Heaven. Only this way can man live in harmony with the world around him. Only this way can mankind survive. Only this way can we get back into the Garden.
All four knew that the success of the entire venture ultimately depends upon one thing: the actualization of the House that was the first thought of the entire creation, "In the beginning" -- BeReYShiT -- RoSh BaYiT, the "Head House": a single place of worship to which all of mankind will turn in unity.
The Mountain, the Field and the House
Said Rabbi Elazar: What does Isaiah mean when he says, "And many peoples will go and say, 'Come let us go up to the Mountain of God to the House of the God of Jacob!'" ? Why the God of Jacob and not the God of Abraham and Isaac? The answer is: Not like Abraham, who saw it as a Mountain ("as it is said this day, On the Mountain HaVaYaH is seen" -- Genesis 22:14). And not like Isaac, for whom it was a Field ("And Isaac went out to meditate in the Field" -- Genesis 24:63). But like Jacob, who called it a House: "And he called the name of that place Beth El, the House of God" (Genesis 28:19).

It was to this focus of worship for all mankind that Abraham aspired when he journeyed to the mountain to sacrifice Isaac. Only for Abraham, it was and remained a mountain -- a high, forbidding place out of the reach of most people.
Having been bound at that spot, Isaac went back there again and again to meditate, pray and plan for the realization of the dream. Isaac made it a habit. He brought it nearer. For Isaac it was a field, a place in which to labor and work towards the vision. Fields are more useful to most people than mountains. The concept of a field is one people can more easily grasp than that of a mountain.
Yet a field is still not a place of human habitation to the same extent that a house is. Everybody needs a house to live in. Everyone can understand the idea of a house.
It was as a House that Jacob conceived the Temple: a House of Prayer. And it is as a House of Prayer that it will become graspable and meaningful to all humanity.
"I will bring them to My holy Mountain and make them rejoice in My House of Prayer. Their sacrifices and peace-offerings will find favor on My altar. For My House will be called the House of Prayer for all the nations" (Isaiah 56,7).
David's messianic mission was to spread the teaching of prayer to all mankind. Thus it was Jacob's concept of a House that David sought to actualize and build in his city of Jerusalem.
And it is this House that will be built quickly in the near future when Mashiach, son of David, leads the building of the third, final, eternal House, the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. And then all mankind will unite in the service of God and the world will come to perfection.
The progression from the concept of an entirely natural Mountain to that of a human-cultivated Field and finally that of a totally man-constructed House corresponds to mankind's progression from the time Adam first stepped out into the unspoiled God-given world of nature through thousands of years of agrarian living to the super-sophisticated man-constructed scientific-technological-urban civilization we live in today.
The Mountain is symbolic of the raw, God-given, natural environment. The Field represents the primary place of interaction between man and his environment: man has to dig, sow and manipulate the Earth in other ways in order to exploit the God-given resources so as to feed himself and provide his other needs.
But when it comes to actually eating, drinking, resting, relaxing and enjoying, people's first choice is the "House" -- whether their own homes or the other man-made buildings and structures in which we go about our various daily activities.
Men have built houses and more houses and more houses... until the Earth is filling up with bigger and bigger cities, the urban agglomerations that constitute the main centers of contemporary civilization.
The paradox is that this man-made civilization is now destroying the natural environment that is the very basis of its life. This is a civilization that is out of harmony with the environment.
Only through the sacred House that Jacob saw and the Son of David will build soon in Jerusalem, the Holy City, will it become possible to make peace and restore harmony between man and his human-constructed, technology-based, house-centered, citified world on the one hand, and the surrounding God-created, God-given world of nature on the other.
May this House be built quickly in our time. Amen.

COMMONWEALTH Ombudsman Allan Asher
is set to announce his resignation after admitting
he wrote questions for a Greens senator
to ask him in a Senate committee hearing.
Fairfax reports the Gillard government has made it clear it had
lost confidence in Mr Asher because he penned questions about
under-funding for Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young
to ask him in a senate committee hearing in May.
It said Mr Asher has met with Special Minister of State Gary Gray
to discuss his conduct where it was obvious relations between him
and the government were beyond repair.
On Monday, Mr Asher apologised to a Senate estimates committee for his
behaviour at an earlier hearing, saying it had been mistaken and he was
deeply sorry.
The paper said that while it would take a parliamentary vote to dismiss Mr Asher,
he was ready to step aside today in the face of the government's attitude.

Protesters in the City Square have set up camp and don't want to leave any time soon
Lord Mayor Robert Doyle says the protesters have made their statement and should leave.

UPDATE 2.16pm: PREMIER Ted Baillieu has asked the Occupy Melbourne protesters in City Square to "move along".
But he would not comment on whether they should be removed against their will.
"I think the Lord Mayor has indicated that time is up," Mr Baillieu said.
"I share the view that people have a right to protest. They should do it
in a way that does not cause disruption and my advice to them is: time
to move along."
His comments come after Lord Mayor Robert Doyle gave the protesters notice
to pack up and leave.
Occupy Melbourne spokesman Nick Carson has reiterated the group is doing
nothing illegal by "standing, sitting or sleeping in public space".
Mr Carson did say that under City of Melbourne laws, tents and structures in public spaces were not permitted.

"They’re keeping it up their sleeves as a potential justification for getting rid of us," he said.
As the protest continues into its sixth day, Cr Doyle said the protesters
had made their statement and would be required to leave the square in a
matter of days.
"They have made their statement," he said on ABC Radio yesterday.
"When it does come time for them to pack up and move on I would hope they do so
in a respectful manner."
But Greens MP Adam Bandt said he thought the protest was great.
"I came down to have a look and I think it's great. Julie Gillard and Tony Abbott
should come down and have a look,'' he said.
Mr Bandt said while the protesters were peaceful and not clashing with authorities they should be allowed to remain.
He said it should be up to protesters, not the Lord Mayor, to decide when they
should leave, although he doubted they'd still be camped in the square by Christmas.

OUTGOING South Australian Premier Mike Rann says it's up to others to judge him.
But the man often dubbed "media Mike" is not shy about listing his government's achievements since coming to office in 2002.
By any measure it's a reasonably impressive list.
In recent weeks the premier has signed-off on the banning of mining in the
environmentally-sensitive Arkaroola Sanctuary in the Flinders Ranges
and also the deal to have BHP Billiton spend $30 billion expanding the
Olympic Dam copper and uranium mine.
Over the past decade it has
also increased spending on health and education, opening new schools and
employing more doctors and nurses.
It has also built a desalination plant, started construction on a new central hospital and
approved the major redevelopment of Adelaide Oval.

In defence, SA secured the contracts to build the Navy's next fleet of submarines and also the air warfare destroyers.
The Government has also championed renewable energy, with SA now generating
more than half the nation's wind power and becoming a leader in solar
power.
But there's been issues too.
Mr Rann has been forced to deny an affair with a former parliamentary waitress and
watched on as his deputy and long-serving treasurer Kevin Foley was twice assaulted.
A Labor MP was also charged with child pornography offences and was suspended
from the ALP while there have also been a simmering row with the union movement over cuts to public sector jobs and conditions.
That row has characterised the sometimes wider criticism levelled at Mr Rann and his government, that they don't always listen to the people or properly consult before
finalising projects or policies.
In a balancing act, the wins probably outweigh the losses, but as Mr Rann suggests,
the final say will be up to others.
"Overall I think that one day people will probably say all of these things were
about a state that's more confident about itself, more outward looking,"
he says.
"That we're a destination again rather than a beloved home town that people
had to leave to find opportunities elsewhere."
More personally, Mr Rann says being the SA Premier has been the
"greatest privilege of my life".
"I wanted to leave the state in better shape than I found it, and I wanted
to leave the party in better shape than when I took over," he says.
"I think on both of those there's big tick."
Mr Rann is expected to officially stand down as premier tomorrow.

A VICTORIAN-first move to charge two brothers over the creation of a
Facebook page used to humiliate teens has been heralded as a
significant step in the war on cyber abuse.
Police are preparing a brief of evidence against two Bendigo
brothers who allegedly
set up a page where
youths as young as 13 were
rated after sexual encounters.
Police have interviewed the men, aged 24 and 21, and are set to lay charges
for using an "online information service to publish, transmit or make available
for transmission objectionable material".
Legal experts said the move was significant and they expected more cases
involving social networking sites as debate continued about what behaviour
pushed legal and social boundaries.
The charges - under section 57 of the Classification
(Publications, Films and Computer Games) Enforcement Act
1995 - could have major implications for administrators who set up
similar sites, including across Melbourne, Geelong and the Mornington
Peninsula.

They attract up to two years' jail or fines of up to about $29,000.
The Herald Sun has been told people sent vulgar comments to the page's inbox
in the latest case and the pair posted them online.
Police began investigating after one of the victims,
a teenage girl, produced a screen grab of a post.
It is believed the 24-year-old told police he set the site up as a joke.
Facebook closed down the web page after about three days,
by which time police had contacted its administrators.
Legal experts said it was believed to be the first time police planned to prosecute
in such circumstances.
A police officer with knowledge of the case said: "I don't think anyone
has been charged under that Act in relation to Facebook."
He said officers could spend days going through posts and had already contacted Facebook to have four similar pages shut down.
Associate professor Dr Jonathan Clough, from Monash University's law faculty,
said the case was significant and concerned what was objectionable material online:
"To defend it they have to prove they did not believe,
and they had reasonable grounds in not believing,
that it was objectionable."
Leading cyber safety expert Susan McLean praised police for pursuing the case.
"Hopefully, it will send a very clear message that people can't get involved in
this stuff, and if they do there are consequences," she said.
Dr Clough said cyber bullies and abusers could also face charges under the
state Crimes Act for stalking, or under federal telecommunications laws
for using the internet to "menace, harass or cause offence".
A police spokesman said: "People can feel they are anonymous ... in the
digital sphere and may act in a manner they would not consider
appropriate in the 'real world'. They need to remember (this) can have
real consequences, including criminal charges."

A WOMAN allegedly held hostage for three days in a bizarre extortion
plot was found blindfolded beside a shallow grave when police swooped
on an outer Melbourne property yesterday morning.
Armed Crime Taskforce detectives arrested a 35-year-old man at the
Pakenham property over allegations he demanded a ransom
from the family of the woman, whom he met online.
Ransom money was allegedly demanded from the woman's family in Australia and in Nepal.
When police raided the home,
they found the pair in the backyard,
where a shallow grave had been dug
and a cap placed over the woman's eyes.
The 35-year-old Endeavour Hills man was arrested at the house at 11.15am.
The 29-year-old woman from Footscray met the man in the city on Tuesday
after first meeting him online.
Police said the pair might have met on an online dating site.
The pair then drove to the house in Pakenham where
the man allegedly told the woman he was holding her captive.
The woman is believed to be of Nepalese origin.
They were tipped off by officers from the federal police
and investigations led them to the house in Pakenham,
which is not believed to be owned by the man.
The woman was not physically hurt in the ordeal and was taken to Casey Hospital
but later released.
The man was denied bail last night and will face Dandenong Magistrates’
Court today on five charges including kidnapping, two counts of
threatening to kill, and one count each of false imprisonment and
assault.

COMMONWEALTH Ombudsman Allan Asher
is set to announce his resignation after admitting
he wrote questions for a Greens senator
to ask him in a Senate committee hearing.
Fairfax reports the Gillard government has made it clear it had
lost confidence in Mr Asher because he penned questions about
under-funding for Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young
to ask him in a senate committee hearing in May.
It said Mr Asher has met with Special Minister of State Gary Gray
to discuss his conduct where it was obvious relations between him
and the government were beyond repair.
On Monday, Mr Asher apologised to a Senate estimates committee for his
behaviour at an earlier hearing, saying it had been mistaken and he was
deeply sorry.
The paper said that while it would take a parliamentary vote to dismiss Mr Asher,
he was ready to step aside today in the face of the government's attitude.

A VICTORIAN-first move to charge two brothers over the creation of a
Facebook page used to humiliate teens has been heralded as a
significant step in the war on cyber abuse.
Police are preparing a brief of evidence against two Bendigo
brothers who allegedly
set up a page where
youths as young as 13 were
rated after sexual encounters.
Police have interviewed the men, aged 24 and 21, and are set to lay charges
for using an "online information service to publish, transmit or make available
for transmission objectionable material".
Legal experts said the move was significant and they expected more cases
involving social networking sites as debate continued about what behaviour
pushed legal and social boundaries.
The charges - under section 57 of the Classification
(Publications, Films and Computer Games) Enforcement Act
1995 - could have major implications for administrators who set up
similar sites, including across Melbourne, Geelong and the Mornington
Peninsula.

They attract up to two years' jail or fines of up to about $29,000.
The Herald Sun has been told people sent vulgar comments to the page's inbox
in the latest case and the pair posted them online.
Police began investigating after one of the victims,
a teenage girl, produced a screen grab of a post.
It is believed the 24-year-old told police he set the site up as a joke.
Facebook closed down the web page after about three days,
by which time police had contacted its administrators.
Legal experts said it was believed to be the first time police planned to prosecute
in such circumstances.
A police officer with knowledge of the case said: "I don't think anyone
has been charged under that Act in relation to Facebook."
He said officers could spend days going through posts and had already contacted Facebook to have four similar pages shut down.
Associate professor Dr Jonathan Clough, from Monash University's law faculty,
said the case was significant and concerned what was objectionable material online:
"To defend it they have to prove they did not believe,
and they had reasonable grounds in not believing,
that it was objectionable."
Leading cyber safety expert Susan McLean praised police for pursuing the case.
"Hopefully, it will send a very clear message that people can't get involved in
this stuff, and if they do there are consequences," she said.
Dr Clough said cyber bullies and abusers could also face charges under the
state Crimes Act for stalking, or under federal telecommunications laws
for using the internet to "menace, harass or cause offence".
A police spokesman said: "People can feel they are anonymous ... in the
digital sphere and may act in a manner they would not consider
appropriate in the 'real world'. They need to remember (this) can have
real consequences, including criminal charges."

A WOMAN allegedly held hostage for three days in a bizarre extortion
plot was found blindfolded beside a shallow grave when police swooped
on an outer Melbourne property yesterday morning.
Armed Crime Taskforce detectives arrested a 35-year-old man at the
Pakenham property over allegations he demanded a ransom
from the family of the woman, whom he met online.
Ransom money was allegedly demanded from the woman's family in Australia and in Nepal.
When police raided the home,
they found the pair in the backyard,
where a shallow grave had been dug
and a cap placed over the woman's eyes.
The 35-year-old Endeavour Hills man was arrested at the house at 11.15am.
The 29-year-old woman from Footscray met the man in the city on Tuesday
after first meeting him online.
Police said the pair might have met on an online dating site.
The pair then drove to the house in Pakenham where
the man allegedly told the woman he was holding her captive.Police said the man demanded cash from the woman and her family in Nepal.

The woman is believed to be of Nepalese origin.
They were tipped off by officers from the federal police
and investigations led them to the house in Pakenham,
which is not believed to be owned by the man.
The woman was not physically hurt in the ordeal and was taken to Casey Hospital
but later released.
The man was denied bail last night and will face Dandenong Magistrates’
Court today on five charges including kidnapping, two counts of
threatening to kill, and one count each of false imprisonment and
assault.

COMMONWEALTH Ombudsman Allan Asher
is set to announce his resignation after admitting
he wrote questions for a Greens senator
to ask him in a Senate committee hearing.
Fairfax reports the Gillard government has made it clear it had
lost confidence in Mr Asher because he penned questions about
under-funding for Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young
to ask him in a senate committee hearing in May.
It said Mr Asher has met with Special Minister of State Gary Gray
to discuss his conduct where it was obvious relations between him
and the government were beyond repair.
On Monday, Mr Asher apologised to a Senate estimates committee for his
behaviour at an earlier hearing, saying it had been mistaken and he was
deeply sorry.
The paper said that while it would take a parliamentary vote to dismiss Mr Asher,
he was ready to step aside today in the face of the government's attitude.

Some insightful Bible students noticed, the proof lies in the obvious identity that exists between Daniel's "the king of the north" in the last days and Ezekiel's "Gog" of the latter days. By comparing what is said about each of them in the two prophecies, it is manifest that they can only be different titles for the same being.
Ezekiel Chapter 38 and 39 = Daniel 11:45
Their geographical position is the same. "Gog's" country is in the north part in relation to the Holy Land; as it is written, "Thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts". "Gog" is therefore "the king of the north", his place or country being there.
Both of them are adversaries of Israel and invaders of the Holy Land. The eleventh chapter of Daniel abundantly proves this in relation to "the king of the north"; and of "Gog", Yahoueh said: "Thou shalt come up against my people Israel, as a cloud to cover the land".
The time they invade the land is the same. "The king of the north" invades in the last days. Of "Gog" it is said: "It shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land".
The same peoples are named as components of their armies. The Libyans and Ethiopians are allies with "the king of the north"; and in the enumeration of Gog's forces, it says, "Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them".
Who is "Gog"? Which land is the land of "Magog"?
Some people think that "Gog" is the Devil. But does the context support this idea? Ezekiel wrote that after "Gog's" last attack he will fall and then be buried by the people. (Ez.39:4,11) So there is no need to prove that "Gog" represents the Devil as we know that the devil does not have a body of flesh and bone and has no need for a grave. Thus, in actuality, whom does "Gog" symbolize?
"Gog" is the chief prince of Meschech and Tubal. Meshech, the sixth son of Japheth (Genesis 10:2) is the founder of a tribe (1 Chronicles 1:5; Ezekiel 27:13; 38:2,3). They were in all probability the Moschi people, inhabiting the Moschian Mountains, between the Black and the Caspian Seas. In Psalms 120:5 the name occurs simply as a synonym for foreigners or barbarians. "During the ascendancy of the Babylonians and Persians in Western Asia, the Moschi were subdued; but it seems probable that a large number of them crossed the Caucasus range and spread over the northern steppes, mingling with the Scythians. There they became known as Muscovs and gave this name to the Russian nation and its ancient capital by which they are still generally known throughout the East" (Easton's Bible Dictionary).
Many ancient sources have clearly identified "Magog" as referring to the "Scythians".
One of the earliest references to Magog was made by Hesiod, "the father of Greek didactic poetry" who identified Magog with the Scythians and southern Russia in the 7th century B.C. Hesiod was a contemporary of Ezekiel.
Josephus Flavius clearly identified Magog. "Magog founded the Magogians, thus named after him, but who were by the Greeks called Scythians". (Josephus, Antiquities, 1.123; Jerome, Commentary on Ezekiel 38:2)
The Greek historian Herodotus wrote that in the fifth century B.C. the Scythians ruled from the Don River, in present southern Russia, to the Carpathian Mountains in central Europe.
Philo, is another historian in the first century A.D. who identified "Magog" with southern Russia.
Ancient authorities clearly identified the Scythians as the ancestors of the present day Russians.
However, even without that information, the identity of "Magog" is not too difficult to figure out. In Ezekiel 38:15, it says: "And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee". The "north parts" is literally the "extreme, or uttermost" parts of the north.
Who are "the kings of the north" and "south"? Who are the "kings" of this chapter?
Daniel 11:2
Since the Prophecy was given in the third year of Cyrus (Daniel 10:1), the three kings that were to "stand up yet", that is, "after him", were Cambyses II, Smerdis the Magian imposter, Darius I Hystaspes.
The fourth king, Xerxes I, stirred up Persia against Greece, which he invaded in 480 B.C. but failed to conquer. Since prophecy touches only upon important events and characters, the remaining kings of Persia are omitted, and the prophecy jumps over nearly 150 years to the time of Alexander the Great 336-323 B.C.E.
Daniel 11:3,4
"A valiant king", Alexander the Great, whose kingdom after his death was divided into four parts.
1) Seleucus I - who began the Seleucid (Syrian) empire, from Turkey to India.
2) Cassander - who took over Macedonia (Greece).
3) Lysimachus - who took Thracia (between Greece and Turkey).
4) Ptolemy I - who ruled over Egypt.
Daniel 11:5
After the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C., the throne of Egypt fell to Ptolemy I Soter, the son of Lagus, the king of the south.
"One of his princes", Seleucus I, Nicator ["the king of the north"] also rose to power, and took over the region of Syria. He eventually became more powerful than his former Egyptian ruler.
Daniel 11:6
"The daughter of the king of the south" = Berenice II, daughter of Ptolemy II Philadelphus.
"The king of the north" = Antiochus II Theos.
Two years after the marriage, Berenice's father (Ptolemy Philadelphus) died.
Antiochus restored Laodice and put away Berenice.
He was then poisoned by Laodice.
Berenice fled with her children to Daphne where she was killed.
Daniel 11:7-9
A "branch of her roots" will come with an army. This was Berenice's brother, Ptolemy III Euregetes, "the king of the south".
"The king of the north" is Seleucus II Kallinikos, son of Laodice who was defeated in a later invasion of Egypt. He lost most of Asia Minor along with losing to the military expansion of Ptolemy III who put his mother, Laodice, to death.
Verse 9: "And [the king of the north] will enter into the kingdom of the king of the south, but will return to his own land". (literal translation)
Seleucus II, son of the deceased Laodice, sought revenge for the vengeance taken by Ptolemy III. "Justin says that he fitted out a great fleet, which was destroyed by a violent storm; and after this he raised a great army to recover his dominion, but was defeated by Ptolemy, and fled in great terror and trembling to Antioch" (Gill's Commentary).
Daniel 11:10-12
His ["the king of the north"] sons = Seleucus III Ceraunus and Antiochus III the Great.
"The king of the north" = Antiochus III, the Great.
"The king of the south" = Ptolemy IV Philopator.
Ptolemy IV defeated the much larger army of Antiochus III at the Battle of Raphia in 217.
Daniel 11:13-17
"The king of the south" = Ptolemy V Epiphanes.
"The king of the north" = Antiochus III.
Antiochus III gives his daughter Cleopatra I to Ptolemy V, in hopes of permanent influence in Egypt.
Verse 14a: "And in those times many will rise against the king of the south".
At this time, many of the Egyptians began rebelling against the ruling Grecian family and began rioting and defying them.
Verse 14b: "And the sons of the violent ones of your people shall rise up to establish the vision, but they shall stumble". (LIT)
This verse speaks of the violent sons of Daniel's nation. Many commentators suggest that these people will stand up against the king of the south, but this text foretells that these people will lift themselves up to establish the vision. They were called a violent people by Ezekiel who in this way described them as shedders of blood. (18:10a) The word vision [in Aramaic chezev; in Hebrew chazown] is used in the Book of Daniel e.g. in: 7:1,2,7,13,15; 8:1,2,13,15,17,26; 9:24; 10:14; 11:14. All of these visions prophecy of the future persecution of God's nation, that would be fulfilled in the distant future. (Daniel 8:17; 10:14)
What kind of violent people would lift themselves in the ancient time, to fulfill the inspired visions and prophecies before their time? The First Book of the Maccabees clearly indicates the Maccabees as being these violent people. (1:54; 6:7) Until now, many commentators believe that the Maccabees fulfilled the prophecies of the Book of Daniel. But Jesus said that the vision which concerns the abomination of desolation and the persecutions of God's nation will be fulfilled in the future. (Compare Matthew 24:15; Revelation 13:1-
Verse 11:16b "and he standeth in the desirable land, and it is wholly in his hand". (YLT)
After one hundred years, Palestine again changed hands. The Seleucid king, Antiochus III, took control of Palestine c. 200 B.C.E.
Daniel 11:18
Antioch III against the Roman Empire.
"Ruler" = Lucius Cornelius, the Roman general.
The Romans humbled him (191) at Thermopylae and again at Magnesia (190).
Daniel 11:19a
Subsequently, Antiochus was forced to campaign within his own lands to stop his satraps from declaring themselves independent rulers.
Daniel 11:19b
"He shall stumble and fall, and shall not be found" = end of the period of greatness for the Seleucid Empire. (Compare Revelation 18:21; Jeremiah 51:64)
Daniel 11:20
"And stood up on his station hath one causing an exactor to pass over the honour of the kingdom, and in a few days he is destroyed, and not in anger, nor in battle". (YLT)
"The king of the north" = Caesar Augustus. The first Roman emperor.
"The king of the south" not on the scene.
In 2 B.C., Augustus sent out "an exactor" by ordering a registration, or census, most likely to learn the size of the population for purposes of taxation and military conscription. Because of this decree, Joseph and Mary traveled to Bethlehem for registration, resulting in Jesus' birth at that foretold location. (Micah 5:2; Matthew 2:1-12)
Daniel didn’t prophecy that "the king of the north" would die "after a few days" from this event, but would die in the undetermined future "after a few days". In the end of July, in the year 14 A.D., August left Rome. He took a vacation in his old age and health. On the 19th of August, after a short sickness, he "passed away peacefully, not feeling any pain". While traveling in Campania, Augustus died "in a few days", neither "in anger" at an assassin's hands nor "in warfare", but after a short illness.
Many say that "the king of the north" is Seleucus IV Philopater, who sent out his finance minister, Heliodorus to collect taxes. But Seleucus was murdered in a conspiracy engineered by Heliodorus. It is said that the king here was to however die a natural death (not one of anger or of battle). Therefore, this writing does not conform to Seleucus IV. Also, verse 21 cannot carry over to the rule of Antiochus IV Epiphanes.
Daniel 11:21-23
Verse 21: "And in his place shall arise a despised. And they will not give him the royal majesty. He will come in a time of peace and will seize the kingdom through duplicity".
"The king of the north" = Tiberius 14-37.
"The king of the south" not on the scene.
"The ruler of the covenant" = Jesus [Yeshua].
Augustus only chose him after more favored heirs had died.
The New Encyclopædia Britannica says, Tiberius played politics with the Senate and did not allow it to name him emperor for almost a month [after Augustus died]". He told the Senate that no one but Augustus was capable of carrying the burden of ruling the Roman Empire and asked the senators to restore the republic by entrusting such authority to a group of men rather than to one man. "Not daring to take him at his word", wrote historian Will Durant, "the Senate exchanged bows with him until at last he accepted power". Durant added: "The play was well acted on both sides. Tiberius wanted the principate, or he would have found some way to evade it; the Senate feared and hated him, but shrank from reestablishing a republic based, like the old, upon theoretically sovereign assemblies". Thus, Tiberius took hold of the kingdom by means of duplicity.
Verse 22: "And the arms of the flood shall be swept from before his face, and they will be broken, and also the ruler of a covenant".
In 15 A.D., Germanicus led his forces against the German hero Arminius, with some success. However, the limited victories were won at great cost, and Tiberius thereafter aborted operations in Germany. Instead, by promoting civil war, he tried to prevent German tribes from uniting. Tiberius generally favoured a defensive foreign policy and focused on strengthening the frontiers. This stance was fairly successful. In this way "the arms of the flood" were controlled and were "broken".
"Broken" too was "the Leader of the covenant" = Jesus [Yeshua]. (Compare Isaiah 55:4; Daniel 9:25, 27a)
Verse 23: "And after they join themselves to him, he will do guile, and he will exalt himself, and will do strong by a few of the people".
The oath of loyalty bound the army and officials to the Tiberius.
"Sextus Pompeius and Sextus Apuleius, the consuls, were the first to swear allegiance to Tiberius Caesar, and in their presence the oath was taken by Seius Strabo and Caius Turranius, respectively the commander of the praetorian cohorts and the superintendent of the corn supplies. Then the Senate, the soldiers and the people did the same".
Those few people were the Roman Praetorian Guard, encamped close to Rome's walls. Its proximity intimidated the Senate and helped Tiberius keep in check any uprisings against his authority among the populace. By means of some 10.000 guards Tiberius remained mighty.
Daniel 11:24
"In a time of peace he will come against [sense: will attack] the fattest [sense: mighty] of the land, and he will do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers' fathers: prey, and spoil, and substance, their possession he will distribute. And against strongholds he will devise his schemes until the appointed time".
"The king of the north" = Tiberius and next emperors.

The word "mashman" refers here to fattest [sense: mighty]. (Compare Ps.78:31 and Is.10:16)
Because he was very suspicious, Emperor Tiberius, extended the law of laesa majestas. Many senators were put to death on a charge of treason against the emperor. For the people of the provinces, it was a peaceful and well-ordered time.
Daniel 11:25,26a
Aurelian (270-275) against Queen Zenobia of Palmyra ["the king of the south"].
The Palmyrene army occupied Egypt in 269 B.C.E. under the pretext of making it secure for Rome. Zenobia wanted to make Palmyra the dominant city in the east and wanted to rule over Rome's eastern provinces. Alarmed by her ambition, Aurelian aroused "his power and his heart" to proceed against Zenobia.
Zenobia valiantly defended it, but without success. She and her son fled toward Persia, only to be captured by the Romans at the Euphrates River. The Palmyrenes surrendered their city in 272 B.C. Aurelian spared Zenobia, making her the prize feature in his triumphal procession through Rome in 274 B.C. She spent the rest of her life as a Roman matron.
Aurelian himself 'did not stand because of schemes against him.' In 275 B.C., he set out on an expedition against the Persians. While he was waiting in Thrace for the opportunity to cross the straits into Asia Minor, those who 'ate his food' carried out schemes against him and brought about his "breakdown". He was going to call his secretary Eros to account for irregularities. Eros, however, forged a list of names of certain officers marked for death. The sight of this list moved the officers to plot Aurelian's assassination and to murder him.

Decline and fall of the Roman Empire.
"The strength of Aurelian had crushed on every side the enemies of Rome. After his death they seemed to revive with an increase of fury and of numbers".

"And both these kings, their hearts (will be) to do mischief, and at one table (they) will speak a lie. But it will not succeed, for yet (the) finish to (the) appointed time." (11:27, literal translation)
It certainly suggests that the verse does not concern to the ancient times. It describes the end of times right before the appointed time. (Compare Daniel 11:29a)
Russia and England (from second half of the XIX Century).

Arab caliphs ruled Egypt from 641 until 1517, when the Turks took it for their Ottoman Empire. Napoléon's armies occupied the country from 1798 to 1801. In 1805, Mohammed Ali, leader of a band of Albanian soldiers, became pasha of Egypt. After completion of the Suez Canal in 1869, the French and British took increasing interest in Egypt. British troops occupied Egypt in 1882, and British resident agents became its actual administrators, though it remained under nominal Turkish sovereignty. In 1914, this fiction was ended, and Egypt became a protectorate of Britain.
Russia grew expanding its power over huge regions, and by the end of XIX century Russia possessed territories from the mouths of the Danube and Visla in the west, reached the Pacific Ocean in the east, began in the Euroasian tundra in the north and had borders with Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and China in the south.
In 1907, an Anglo-Russian agreement divided Persia into English and Russian spheres of influence, a large Russian sphere in the north, covering the most valuable part of the country, a neutral sphere in the centre, and a smaller British sphere in the southeast.

"And (he) ["the king of the north"] will go back (to) his land with great wealth; and his heart (will be) against the holy covenant; and will act effectively; and turned back to his own land." (literal translation)

The passage contains enough details, which allow for a correct interpretation.
Daniel foretells here that "the king of the north" [Russia] will not only be successful in WW II, but also that he returns to his land with a great amount of goods. If only Hitler had listened to Mussolini and the Japanese, who in 1943 advised him to stop military actions, the prophetic detail would have never been fulfilled.

17. Attack on "Babylon the Great" = big, apostatized churches, drunk with blood of innocent people, which betrayed God and Jesus by co-operating with kings of the earth. (Revelation 17:16)
18. Next, nations see the sign of the Son of man (Matthew 24:30). Probably it will be connected with the first resurrection (Revelation 20:6). People who have died in union with Jesus will rise first (among 144.000). They will get a spirit body at the resurrection. (1 Corinthians 15:35,44) What will be the proof of the resurrection? Immediately after that, remaining of 144,000 will be transfigured (1 Corinthians 15:52; 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17). Simultaneously they will be caught away from the earth and taken to heaven. The transfigurations of belonging to Jesus dependably will not be seen and it will cause a great expression on nations.
19. The whole nation of Israel is converting and gathering. (Ezekiel 39:25-29; Romans 11:25-32). After taking to heaven belonging to group of 144,000 nation of Israel will be a light for the nations. God will be with them and will pour his spirit over them. (Ezekiel 39:29)

24. The rest of dead will come to life! The earth will become the paradise. (Acts 24:15; Psalm 37:29; Isaiah 11:6-9; 25:8; 35:5-7). When the thousand year’s period of Jesus’ kingdom will end people who come to life during this period are put to the test. the Table of Nations in Genesis 10.1 The deliberate design in its
construction, symmetry, and unity were examined in an effort to
understand its purpose as a tOdl;OT. But in addition to the evi-
deuce from its structure, there is a wealth of information about
the nations of the world that is important for the complete under-
standing of this chapter within the message of Genesis.
The Analysis of the Passage
The heading of the chapter (Gen. 10:1) declares that this is
the record of the particulars of what became of Shem, Ham, and
Japheth after the Flood. The verse serves not only as a heading for
the Table, but also as a literary connection back to Genesis 9:18
and 28. It is to be read with the oracle of Noah in mind!....................The sons of Japheth are seven. Gomer, mentioned also in
Ezekiel 38:6, represents the Cimmerians, thought to be of the
same stock as the Scythians.5 Magog is also mentioned in Ezekiel
(38:2 and 39:6) as the land of Gog, the region between Armenia
and Cappadocia; the name seems to represent the Scythian
hordes southeast of the Black Sea.6
THE SONS OF HAM (10:6-20)
More attention is given to the line of Ham than to that of
Japheth or Shem. Ham's line has four branches: Cush, Mizraim,
Put, and Canaan. All four are probably place names for Nubia-
Egypt, Upper and Lower Egypt, Libya, and Phoenicia-Palestine
respectively. In addition, the descendants of these four are both
places and tribes.
Ham is the ancestor of all these people from Phoenicia to
Africa. The etymology of the word Ham is disputed,18 but it is
used to depict countries in close proximity to Egypt.
Cush is the "eldest son" according to the plan of the Table. In
antiquity this was an independent kingdom on the southern
flank of Egypt; and especially during the reign of Kamose it
served as the backbone of the Egyptian army, helping to expel the
Asiatics (Hyksos).19 So the list begins in the far south with the
African tribes known to the Greeks as Ethiopians.
Mizraim lies to the north of Cush. The word occurs almost
ninety times in the Old Testament for Egypt.

As created in the image of God, humans are endowed with "three intrinsic dignities": infinite value, equality, and uniqueness.
The first means that human life cannot be weighed, measured, or compared in terms of, that is, subordinated to, any other value. In the Kantian Parlance humans are always a goal or end in themselves and never a means to something else.
The second term implies that no person or group is privileged over another. In fact, Idolatry results when a person or group absolutizes itself or its message.
The third idea reinforces the dignity of every human by insisting that each person is irreplaceable and has a special role to play in the redemption of the world.
The Jewish religion is founded on the divine assurance and human belief that the world will be perfected." Judaism engages with and seeks to overcome these realities of history through its notion of covenant. The covenant is that dynamic which God inaugurated in history, that partnership between God and the Jewish people, to achieve the dignities for which all humans were created. Jews are those teachers, models, and co-workers-having both a divine and human partners - whom God designated to help all persons and even nature achieve redemption. For Greenberg, the messianic dream of perfection will not be realized by divine fiat, but by "improving this world, one step at a time."
These understandings of God, humans, and the world are expressed through the Torah and lived-out by the Jewish people through the Holy days and the Halakhah. In this view, Torah is that divine teaching which stands as "the constitution of the ongoing relationship of God and the Jewish people."
This expanded view/articulation of higher values help us to search for YHWHs presence in the secular Realms of Life, some peeps call this: 'Holy Secularism'.
The Covenant is essentially a Divine, Loving, Pedagogic process. As Humans become more competent, YHWH invites them to take up a more active role in the Task of Tikkun Olam/World to Come, as Co-Creators.
The lay people of YHWH/God play a more influential role in discerning Yahwehs purpose and in carrying out His Divine Mandates.
Later, ensuing Historical events reshape understandings of earlier Teachings.
Summarized
We=ALL Living things-creatures-sustained and Nurtured by Yahweh-will fill the World with Life.
* We will reshape the Historical Reality, the Flesh & Blood world we inhabit, to sustain that Life at the highest possible level.

The following teaching from the riches of the Oral Tradition is about a level of understanding the Sabbath which is relevant to Jews and non-Jews alike. It is based on a teaching by Rabbi Chaim ben Atar (1746-1793), known as "the holy Light of Life," based on the title of his most famous work.
I. The World Intuitively Pines for G-d
Man - The Centerpiece of Creation
The created world can be divided into four basic categories: the inanimate, plant, animal, and 'speaking' life - man. Man, the highest level of creation, is the only creature endowed with the capability of speech, and this is what singles him out as a completely separate category - he has the greatest potential to develop a relationship with his Creator. He is the center of creation and its purpose and crowning achievement. For this reason, he was created last, and introduced into the Garden... to enable him to enter into a complete world, ready for him, furnished and equipped in advance to house its illustrious occupant.
Every Level of Creation Possesses a Soul
Man is followed by the members of the animal kingdom. Next in line comes the plant kingdom, and finally, inanimate creation - the lowest level of creation, as exemplified by stone. Even stone, the Torah teaches, possesses some degree of life-force, however weak. For it is impossible for something which the Holy One has created to be incapable of recognizing Him. Therefore, commensurate to that degree of life-force, awareness of the Divine could be said to exist within it...
Desire for Closeness to G-d... The Prime Mover
And so the soul, the essence, of every creature, each according to its level of understanding, has some inkling of the greatness of the Creator, and actually carries on a relationship with Him. This soul is constantly driven with endless passion to come closer to the source of all life, the Great and Perfect Light of the L-rd... how much more so should this be true among the higher, more spiritual elements of creation who understand to some extent what it means to 'cling' to the light of the living G-d.
All of Creation is United in the Desire for Closeness to G-d
Herein lies one of the greatest secrets of creation...
All life on earth... and even the actual physical elements that comprise the planet itself - the entire world as one, including every level of creation, from the lowest level of the inanimate - stones and earth, to the highest and most intelligent life-form, man himself; an endless pageant which spans every creature, plant and animal - all are constantly and inexorably united by an all-consuming, burning desire for G-d. This is the vital force which drives the world; this desire is the power which fuels the universe... it reverberates within the entire life-force, and the whole globe, like a man beating with one heart, knows on the deepest level with absolute clarity that there is nothing as sweet, desirable, and sustaining as 'Dveykut' - the ability to 'cling' close to the light of the Creator. This is the purpose of life itself, and on the deepest collective intuitive level, all are aware that nothing else is worth living for. This longing is itself the vital life-force of everything, and the entire world draws from it at once. In other words, this longing for G-d is what fuels the world to go on.
Because G-d is the Creator of all existence, He maintains an intimate link with each and every creature, regardless of its spiritual capacity. Obviously not all of creation is equal in spiritual sensitivity. Regardless of this, that link of intimate knowledge still exists, according to its degree of conciousness and development.
Three Revolutionary Innovations in Human History took place at Mount Sinai.
1: Abstract Ethical Monotheism

3: An Alephbet 1,800 BCE
Abstract Ethical Monotheism rather than Polytheism, Rule of Law for All rather than the Divine Rights of Kings or Queens and an Aleph/Bet, less than thirty characters that replaced Iconographs/Ideograms and Hieroglyphs, enhancing Literacy amongst the masses.

The People of Israel are YHWHs Servants, 'Chosen' to witness to the loving Creator and the Divine Plan for Humanity and the Cosmos.
The People of Israel = not just the Israelis, or Jews, but to all who affirm that Yahweh has made a valid Covenant with Abraham and his descendants and all who take up the task of World Redemption so that the covenant can be fulfilled.
For that is the purpose of making the covenant.

At the end, Holistic perfection will be achieved.

Devotion to an Abstract Deity has a Heavy price.
If everyone agrees there is only one, true, Living Creator Being, and different groups conceive of it in different ways, then whose perception of that Deity is the correct one?
Examine each groups’ values and praxis.
Different perceptions have inspired some groups to wage war and engage in forced conversions.
This never occurred in Polytheistic Cultures.
They had many wars but for the usual mundane reasons, Land, Treasure, Women, Power over others for the sake of Power alone, but they never waged Religious War.
One effect of an Alphabetic based Abstract Ethical Monotheism is the brain is using a new abstract, linear, sequential, and reductionist means of communication which moves people who learn it and use it into a Left Brain, Masculine Mode, rather than the usual Pictographic, Feminine Right Brain Mode.
The Aleph/Alphabet subliminally coaxes users to be intolerant of other Iconic Systems of Beliefs.

As stated before, Judaism is the first religion to be based upon universal literacy, the written word.
When Moses came down from his meet and greet with YHWH on the mountain, the multitude had fashioned an Idol/Golden Calf, this so upset Moses he dropped the two stone Tablets upon which YHWH/God had written the ten commandments.
Allegorically: In the first confrontation between Image and Written Word, both were destroyed.
As the story goes, Moses returned to the Mountain Top and Yahweh provided him with another set.
The 10 Commandments; The first four Commandments are for the Recognition and service/Worship of YHWH/God, the remaining six focus on our fellow humans, loving and serving them.
The Commandment to Honour Both Father and Mother elevates and recognizes the importance and status of Women in the Family Group.
Love your neighbour is not one of the Ten but appears in the Torah/Instruction, Leviticus 19:18.
The last six commandments are not unusual, and found in other Codices of Laws, The First four Commandments are Unique.
Each one of the first four commandments encourages Alphabetic Literacy by rejecting the Right Brains way of 'knowing'.

The Meta-Message of the First Commandment is that Yahweh is the Master of the Universe, He is self-existent, and all other elohim/gods & goddesses are created beings, subservient to Him.

82:1 Yahweh stands in the congregation of El; he judges among the elohim.
82:2 How long will you judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah.
82:3 Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.

All of Yahwehs’ Titles are masculine.
The First Commandment is a radical break with the Hebrews past environment. Moses and the Hebrews had left Egypt which was Polytheistic, alot of gods and goddesses worship.
Yahweh declares there is no worship of other gods or goddesses.
Perhaps the most radical sentence ever written.
The Second Commandment:
20:4 Thou shall not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I; Yahweh thy Elohim am a jealous Elohim, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
No Graven Images, Icons or Idols, Statues.
Learning to think without Images is indispensable to Alphabetic Literacy. The Power formerly rendered to Images/Pictures is now transferred to the written word.
Make no Graven Images is a ban/restraint on Right Brain Pattern Recognition.
The Third Commandment:
20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of Yahweh thy Elohim in vain; for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Do not use Yahwehs Name vainly, with Malintent. Again; Left Brain.
Yahwehs first instruction to adam isto Name all the critters. Through Naming, Adam attains dominion over all the Earth. Naming confers meaning and order, moving Life from Chaos to Order.
To Name is to know, to know is to control. Order out of Chaos.
The Fourth Commandment:
20:8 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
20:10 But the seventh day is the Sabbath of thy Elohim: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
20:11 For in six days made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.
Seven Days are not a Natural Break Point in any of Earths Major Natural Rhythmic Cycles-Lunar-Solar, except the Quarter Moon.

This was the advent of the seven day week, and a day off every week.
A day off for ALL Humans, Free and Bond, and ALL Beasts of Burden one day a week and the Farmland to lay fallow every seven years to rejuvinate the enzymes in the ground.

Time is a key function of the Left Brain.

As created in the image of God, humans are endowed with "three intrinsic dignities": infinite value, equality, and uniqueness.
The first means that human life cannot be weighed, measured, or compared in terms of, that is, subordinated to, any other value. In the Kantian Parlance humans are always a goal or end in themselves and never a means to something else.
The second term implies that no person or group is privileged over another. In fact, Idolatry results when a person or group absolutizes itself or its message.
The third idea reinforces the dignity of every human by insisting that each person is irreplaceable and has a special role to play in the redemption of the world.
The Jewish religion is founded on the divine assurance and human belief that the world will be perfected." Judaism engages with and seeks to overcome these realities of history through its notion of covenant. The covenant is that dynamic which God inaugurated in history, that partnership between God and the Jewish people, to achieve the dignities for which all humans were created. Jews are those teachers, models, and co-workers-having both a divine and human partners - whom God designated to help all persons and even nature achieve redemption. For Greenberg, the messianic dream of perfection will not be realized by divine fiat, but by "improving this world, one step at a time."
These understandings of God, humans, and the world are expressed through the Torah and lived-out by the Jewish people through the Holy days and the Halakhah. In this view, Torah is that divine teaching which stands as "the constitution of the ongoing relationship of God and the Jewish people."
This expanded view/articulation of higher values help us to search for YHWHs presence in the secular Realms of Life, some peeps call this: 'Holy Secularism'.
The Covenant is essentially a Divine, Loving, Pedagogic process. As Humans become more competent, YHWH invites them to take up a more active role in the Task of Tikkun Olam/World to Come, as Co-Creators.
The lay people of YHWH/God play a more influential role in discerning Yahwehs purpose and in carrying out His Divine Mandates.

* Telling the Story of Creation is the Jews 'Witness'. The present evidentiary Facts contradict the Narrative fairly substantialy.
* Yet, This Story of Creation is shared by Jews and Christians
* This Story leads Humans to see existence as best they can, from a Cosmic Perspective-Sub Specie Aeternitatis.
* From that Vantage Point there are Three Grand Movements in the unfolding Pattern of the Cosmos
1: The World is moving from Chaos to Order. From the Big Bang, with no Laws of Nature to the regularity of the Life sustaining Laws of Nature.
2: The World is moving from Non-Life to Life. From a State in which no life existed to the emergence of Life. From one cell, untold replications, life has grown Quantitatively, and developed Qualitatively. It has luxuriated and spread into a vast range of forms over and through a variety of sustaining conditions/environments.
* The declaration that Life is growing, moving from non-life to life is counter-intuitive.
Death & Entropy refute that contention.
The 'Key' is YHWH/God-The Hidden, Infinite Source of Life with limitless Goodness, Love and Power that sustains Life and Nurtures every possible Form of Life into Being.
* YHWH, the Divine Source evokes the Third Grand Movement of the Cosmos
3: Life is growing ever more to resemble its Ground: YHWH
Life moves from being less to becoming more and more like Yahweh. The highest form of Life, the Human Being, represents the High Point reached thus far.
In Human Form, life so resembles its Maker that it is called; Biblically; 'The Image of God'
* This emergence of "The Image of God" is the Turning Point in Cosmic History according to Jews & Christians.
Up to that point Life has been sworn to 'Be Fruitful & Multiply' (maximizing reproductive success) through a built-in control Programme-A 'Selfish Gene'- that drives the process.
* The 'Image of God' Consciousness is so much like YHWHs that Humans are able to 'grasp' this overall pattern of which we, ourselves are part, and to join voluntarily in its realization.
* Similarly, the Human 'Image of YHWH/God has a capacity to Love ALL their fellow creatures and every aspect of the Universe, as well as the Maker of it all and the Beauty of the Plan.
* Once Humans understand and embrace this understanding, they will lovingly identify with and willingly participate in the process of Perfection.
* YHWH has invited us, as Humans, The 'Image of God', to enter into a Covenantal Partnership, committed to Love, to join fully in perfecting the Universe.
Tikkun Olam
* The People of Israel joyfully acknowledge that YHWHs first Covenant, the Noahide Covenant, never superseded, is made with ALL Humanity, not exclusively with Jews and/or Christians alone.
* It is made with ALL Sentient Beings.
* ALL Beings are called to recognize and participate in Natures Patterns.
* To accept Limits.
* To Direct their choices and actions in favour of Life.
* To join in working for Order against Chaos.
* We are ALL CHOSEN to become part of the movement from Non-Life to Life.
* We are commanded to increase Life and make it grow ever more like its Maker.
* The purpose of the Religious way of life is to create the nurturing ambience of memory and experience, of relationships and actions that sustain Human growth and turns it towards Yahweh.
* Being in the 'Image of God/YHWH brings with it more God like capacities. It bestows intrinsic Dignity, a climatic extension of that respect to which all of life is entitled.
* The People of Israel hold these Truths to be self-evident: That ALL Humans are created in 'The Image of YHWH/God; and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights, among which are:
* Infinite Value
* Equality
* Uniqueness.
These are Birthrights of every Son & Daughter of Yahweh

Man - The Centerpiece of Creation
The created world can be divided into four basic categories: the inanimate, plant, animal, and 'speaking' life - man. Man, the highest level of creation, is the only creature endowed with the capability of speech, and this is what singles him out as a completely separate category - he has the greatest potential to develop a relationship with his Creator. He is the center of creation and its purpose and crowning achievement. For this reason, he was created last, and introduced into the Garden... to enable him to enter into a complete world, ready for him, furnished and equipped in advance to house its illustrious occupant.
Every Level of Creation Possesses a Soul
Man is followed by the members of the animal kingdom. Next in line comes the plant kingdom, and finally, inanimate creation - the lowest level of creation, as exemplified by stone. Even stone, the Torah teaches, possesses some degree of life-force, however weak. For it is impossible for something which the Holy One has created to be incapable of recognizing Him. Therefore, commensurate to that degree of life-force, awareness of the Divine could be said to exist within it...
Desire for Closeness to G-d... The Prime Mover
And so the soul, the essence, of every creature, each according to its level of understanding, has some inkling of the greatness of the Creator, and actually carries on a relationship with Him. This soul is constantly driven with endless passion to come closer to the source of all life, the Great and Perfect Light of the L-rd... how much more so should this be true among the higher, more spiritual elements of creation who understand to some extent what it means to 'cling' to the light of the living G-d.

All of Yahwehs’ Titles are masculine.
The First Commandment is a radical break with the Hebrews past environment. Moses and the Hebrews had left Egypt which was Polytheistic, alot of gods and goddesses worship.

The spirit of Kabong's litany about the Torah is generally correct in that Semitic people (of any tribe, be it Judah or the various Arab savages out there) needed a solid high-intensity high-discipline religion to make them fly right, although he exaggerates about how applicable it is to normal people who aren't inherently savage the way Semites are. The Talmud is not the Torah: it's a collection of natterings between rabbinical scholars about what the Torah "means", how to interpret and apply the injunctions and commandments and laws in various situations, more specifically than in the Torah. One problem with hair-splitting litigious approaches is that the letter of the law can gain precedence over the spirit of the law (which was what Christianity as a sect of Judaism was originally on about). The spirit of the Torah was not in any way accepting of fucking 3 year-old girls, but the LETTER of it... nasty rabbi perverts did eventually find a way to twist it into allowing it. A lot of that was with the help of Sabbateans and other Judaic heresies that went before them, always after ways of twisting the Torah into a license to root children, etc. The passages in the Torah that were the most savage about how to treat gentiles (to include gentile women) were particular to the case of Canaanites who were wartime enemies. Some level of savagery was allowed in the Torah as a part of fighting that particular war. It was never intended to apply to all 3 year-old gentile toddlers all the time for eternity after the war.
This is not to say the Torah is perfectly acceptable in a modern context. It's just a lot less vile than the Talmud.
