AN Australian scientist says he has found a way
to make it easier to locate valuable minerals.

Professor Bill Collins, of the University of Newcastle's School of Environmental and
Life Sciences, says he has devised a new "billion-year perspective" that examines
the way the Earth was constructed over the past 2000 million years.

The information can be used to try to pinpoint the location
of potential mineral deposits.

"We can use continental drift and other techniques
to track the continents back through time,"
Prof Collins said today.

"It is like a big jigsaw puzzle
with bits and pieces of continents
ripping off one landmass
and transferring to another."

Prof Collins believes the Pacific Rim
contains many copper and gold deposits.

Examining geological information contained in tiny grains of zircon,
which is common in the crust of the Earth, has also given him a new way
to find where the ancient "Pacific Rims" were.

"Many of the ancient margins are now within the continental interior.
This is where the copper and gold reserves will be hidden."

Prof Collins said the ability to predict prospective terrains,
both under the surface and in the highest geological layers,
will be the biggest benefit of his research.
Oh, we know why "you legion" regularly read my posts,
and made me a little cave to post them in.

However, the quality of the readership is not the issue,
but that for close to 7 years, they've continued to be read,
by both, non-replying, independently thinking readers, and,
the same Professional Trolls, who have attacked me with the
same bald faced lies, from the beginning.

And the only thing you all have in common, is interest in a
real world, world view, that other's aren't paying attention to.
Some, to do good with what that view reveals, others, to do ill.

So I don't post much of anything anymore, and stick mainly to
the front pages of the popular news when I do, and then, without
much commentary, if any at all.

And dang if the fools don't still find ways to hang themselves, by
fishing for 'what I mean (by what someone else wrote)',
and/or attacking me for what they
'think I mean (by what someone else wrote)'.
Even when I post news that they generally agree with,
they still manage to excuse attacking me anyway.Rolling Eyes

It's called, "Today's News and Current Affairs", and I post some
that cover topics worthy of full and free consideration, with links
to quoted sources, for readers to further explore the topics from. Smile

Plans to limit tourism in Antarctic

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/antarctica/5140141/Plans-to-limit-tourism-in-Antarctic.html
The number of tourists visiting Antarctica could be restricted
under British plans, amid fears that the increase in cruise ships in the
area threatens to cause irreparable damage to the continent's pristine
environment.

9:00PM BST 11 Apr 2009

Holiday trips to the Antarctica have quadrupled in the past decade and last
year more than 46,000 people visited the land mass and surrounding oceans.

However, safety fears and concerns about the impact visitors are having on the
delicate frozen landscape have soared and members of the Antarctic Treaty –
an agreement between 28 nations, including the UK, on the use of the
continent – are now meeting to discuss ways to regulate tourism.

British officials are seeking to establish a "strategic agreement for
tourism" around the south pole. If successful, it will see treaty
members introduce new measures to improve the safety of tourist trips, while
also reducing the impact that visitors will have on the environment.

The regulations could see limits on the number of ships and landings,
restrictions on how close they come to shore, a ban on building tourist
facilities and hotels on the continent, and rules on waste discharges from
ships.

The British resolution has been tabled at the 32nd Antarctic Treaty
Consultative Meeting, in Baltimore, USA. The fortnight-long talks mark the
50th anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty, which forced countries to put
aside their territorial claims on the continent and instead concentrate on
scientific study.

Gillian Merron, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office minister who attended the
start of the talks last week, told The Sunday Telegraph: "We do want to
see people visiting the Antarctic, but we want them to do it in a safe and
environmentally responsible way. We want to manage and protect the area.

“This is very much a first stage, but if we can get an agreement that in the
first instance we need that environmentally responsible policy, we can then
move on to what that will actually entail.

"What it will ensure is that visitors in the future will be able to
experience the continent in all its beauty and its wilderness without
spoiling it.

"We have to agree to address questions like what can be built in
Antarctic, if anything? Should we allow hotels or not? Would tourists be
allowed to wander around or not? In what order should they visit sites? If
you restrict them to the same sites, what damage does that cause?"

The British proposal has already received support from US Secretary for State
Hillary Clinton who opened the meeting on Monday and the US has tabled its
own resolutions on managing tourism.

More than 400 diplomats will now spend this week discussing the plans
alongside other issues
,
including environmental protection and the
advancement of science in the Antarctic.

As many of the tourist ships that operate in Antarctica are registered in
countries that are not members of the Antarctic Treaty, they are not subject
to any decisions made and so can get away with having less stringent safety
regulations.

Officials have also asked the International Maritime Organisation, which
regulates global shipping, to draw up new guidelines for shipping around the
Antarctic, including new rules on the use of heavy fuel oil, which could
cause widespread damage in the event of a leak.

Senator Clinton said: “The United States is concerned about the safety of the
tourists and the suitability of the ships that make the journey south.

“We have submitted a resolution that would place limits on landings from ships
carrying large numbers of tourists. We have also proposed new requirements
for lifeboats on tourists ships to make sure they can keep passengers alive
until rescue comes.

“And we urge greater international co-operation to prevent discharges from
these ships that will further degrade the environment around the Antarctica.”

Until recently, the Antarctic has been mainly occupied by teams of
international scientists studying the ice and wildlife in the region, along
with military personnel at a few scattered bases.

Unlike the Artic, Antarctica has no indigenous human population despite
covering an area of more than 5 million square miles, nearly one and half
times the size of the USA.

Humans only began to live there in 1897 with the establishment of a winter
station by explorers.

Growing access, however, has seen the number of people visiting the icy
continent increase dramatically. Tour operators now offer “ecotourists” the
chance to see the stunning wilderness and species such as whales and
penguins.

In 1990 Antarctica was visited by just 5,000 tourists, but by 2006/07 the
number had grown to 37,552 while the following year saw a 22 per cent
increase to 46,069.

Many experts argue, however, that it is inappropriate to bring tourists, who
pay around £5,000 for a cruise, to such an inhospitable and remote part of
the world, which is too far for rescue helicopters to easily reach.

At the end of 2007, 154 passengers and crew, including 24 Britons, were forced
to abandon ship after an iceberg ripped a hole in the side of their 2,400
ton cruise ship the M/S Explorer and it sank, leaking oil into the ocean.

The passengers spent six hours shivering in lifeboats in temperatures of -5C
after the Liberian-registered cruise ship sank 75 miles north of Antarctic
coast.

In February this year, another cruise liner the MV Ocean Nova, ran aground
carrying 64 passengers, who had to be rescued while the 41 crew attempted to
dislodge the Bahamas-registered liner at high tide.

The MV Ushuaia, a Panama-registered ship with 122 passengers aboard, also ran
aground in December.

Although these accidents involved relatively small ships that had specially
strengthened hulls to offer some protection against the dangers of icebergs,
larger cruise liners without such protection, often carrying up to 3,000
passengers, also venture into Antarctic waters.

Scientists also fear that the rise in tourism to Antarctica and its
surrounding islands, which harbour many rare species, risks unwittingly
introducing foreign pests and diseases such as rats, insects and plants
could devastate the delicate ecosystem.

John Shears, head of environment and information at the British Antarctic
Survey who is attending the treaty meeting, said scientists had been
monitoring the impact on tourists on gentoo penguins at Port Lockroy on the
Antarctic Peninsula.

He said: "Although the area is heavily visited, we have found that
provided the tourists are properly managed and controlled while they are
ashore, then the impact is actually minimal.

"If there was to be a big accident, however, there is not just an issue
in terms of safety of life, but also in terms of pollution control,
particularly as most of the cruise ships are sailing close to shore."

Japan eases self-imposed arms export ban
From:AFP

December 27, 2011 8:42PM

TOKYO has eased a decades-old self-imposed ban on arms exports,
paving the way for Japanese firms to participate in multinational
weapons projects.

In a move intended to bolster the domestic arms industry and
reduce national defence spending, officially pacifist Japan will for
the first time in decades routinely allow its companies to partner with
foreign firms
to develop weapons.

"Under the new standards, Japan will be able to transport military equipment
for missions of peace-building and international co-operation," Foreign Minister
Koichiro Gemba told reporters today.

"This will mean that Japan can now address
international peace co-operation
and global challenges such as terrorism and piracy
more proactively and effectively.
"

Japan, whose industries took many years to recover from the devastation of
World War II, declared in 1967 that it would very tightly control its
foreign weapons sales.

At the height of the Cold War, then prime minister Eisaku Sato said
Tokyo would not sell armaments to communist states, countries directly
engaged in international conflicts, or nations under UN arms embargoes.

The restrictions were further tightened in 1976 when Japan said all exports
would be subject to stringent rules that effectively barred all weapon sales.

A limited number of exceptions were subsequently made for technological
co-operation projects such as missile defence with the United States, Japan's
cornerstone security ally.

The new rules will allow Japan to develop and produce arms jointly with the US
and European countries and to export military equipment for peaceful and
humanitarian purposes such as UN peace-keeping operations.

Tokyo will also be allowed to provide defensive equipment, such as helmets and
bullet-proof vests, to the limited number of countries in which its Self-Defence Forces
are deployed.

Critics of the ban say it was a Cold War relic that has resulted in Japan's military
hardware capability becoming outdated, while increasingly assertive regional rival
China continues to spend heavily on defence technology.

But supporters say any move to expand Tokyo's military reach, however limited,
is likely to rankle in Beijing and Seoul, where Japan's wartime aggression remains
a sensitive subject.

Prehistory of Antarctica

Like all other continents, Antarctica has at its core an ancient
shield. The rocks of the East Antarctica shield are as old as 4 billion
years, which means that they are amongst the oldest known rocks on
Earth. Geologists are now studying this shield to help them gain insight
into the early geological processes of the Earth’s history.

In many ways, the evolution of Antarctica appears to be similar to
that of Australia.
The fossil record of the two continents is similar,
and Antarctica has yielded dinosaurs, amphibians and even marsupials
from ages when the continents were joined.

The position of the continents shifts constantly and the geography of
today's world is vastly different from what it was even a hundred
million years ago. Twenty million years before the dinosaurs became
extinct, Australia, Antarctica and South America were part of the same
land mass called Gondwana. In those days Antarctica was not covered in
ice, even though it was at the South Pole. Animals passed freely from
South America through Antarctica to Australia, and the plant species of
Gondwana were also closely related to each other.

Eighty five million years ago Australia began to separate from
Antarctica. The separation started slowly at first at a rate of only a
few millimetres a year. This then accelerated to the present rate of 7 cm a year. Australia completely separated from Antarctica about 30 million years ago.

Scientists in Antarctica have discovered fossilised spores and pollen of sundews, Nothofagus (which includes the Tasmanian myrtle N. cunninghamii and the Tasmanian deciduous beech N. gunnii ).
The Tasmanian tree fern and creeping pine, are derived from forms which
once inhabited Australia and Antarctica.
Scientists were recently
excited by a fossil discovery of twigs, roots, leaves and pollen in
Antarctica, of a form which is virtually indistinguishable from Nothofagus gunnii ,
the Tasmanian deciduous beech.
These fossils may be ‘only’ 3 million
years old.
This implies that Antarctica was not entirely covered by ice
at that time. Previous to this find, scientists had thought that
Antarctica cooled and became ice bound after Australia and South America
separated 30 million years ago, allowing the Circumpolar Current to
develop. Scientists are still debating the age and significance of this
fossil discovery.

Antarctica without its ice

People who consider Antarctica to be a small continent will be
surprised to discover that it is larger than Europe and nearly twice the
size of Australia. The Antarctic continent, excluding its ice shelves,
covers over 13 million square kilometres compared with 7.7 million km²
for Australia, or 10.5 million km² for Europe. The map below gives some
idea of relative size.

Aboriginal Stonehenge: Stargazing in ancient Australia - Page 3 9_ul-map1

Ninety-nine percent of Antarctica has a permanent blanket of snow and
ice. Only about one percent of the continent's rock base is visible
where it pokes through the ice sheet in the form of coastal outcrops,
mountain ranges or ‘nunataks’ which are isolated peaks.

The Transantarctic Mountains divide the continent into two
contrasting parts, the East and West. The Transantarctic Mountains
constitute one of the world’s longest and most impressive mountain
chains. They extend from the north western corner of the Ross Sea to the
south western corner of the Weddell Sea. West Antarctica, which
includes the Antarctic Peninsula, is smaller and has a complex
geological history. West Antarctica consists of four land units each
with a different history. There has been major volcanic activity here in
recent geological times and there are still a few active volcanic
centres. Deep waters exist between land units and the West Antarctic ice
sheet, which can be considered to a be floating ice mass, held in place
by land peaks. West Antarctica includes the Vinson Massif, which has
the highest peak in Antarctica at 5140 metres.

Most of East Antarctica is still not well known by geologists but it
does include the Transantarctic Mountains.
These commonly exceed 4000
metres elevation. The shield is very depressed in the centre, where it
carries the bulk of the Antarctic ice sheet. Large areas lie deeper than
1000 metres below sea level.

Mining Antarctica

There are deposits of minerals such as coal and iron ore, but there
are vast economic and technical difficulties associated with the
recovery of mineral deposits. The Antarctic ice cover is, on average,
2.5 km thick and this means that very
little of the land is accessible for exploration, so work would have to
take place under the ice sheet. The difficult Antarctic conditions, even
when the technology works well elsewhere make exploitation unlikely.
Once minerals are mined, Antarctica is a long way from world markets,
and material would have to be transported over the treacherous Southern
Ocean. Cheaper sources exist elsewhere in the world, and these will be
exploited before Antarctic sources.

So far, the economics of extracting resources from the harsh
Antarctic environment have prevented any commercial operations, but
Antarctica's climate may not protect its minerals indefinitely. What can
prevent such exploitation is a strong, well-supported international
agreement. Nations of the Antarctic Treaty System agreed in 1991 to put a
halt to the exploitation of minerals when they signed a comprehensive
Protocol on Environmental Protection (the Madrid Protocol), which banned
mining in Antarctica indefinitely. This important agreement came into
force in January 1998.

Funny how the mob don't get it.

I often ask readers to review my old posts, so that they can see that
I am the very real person I write as, with the very real life education
I freely share, and, have no secret agenda, no secret backing or 'trick

Unlike all my attackers that can't remember which lie they bought,

that 'they' have been busted peddling.

But still, idiots like those of 'Team Billy', need to believe that re-telling

True Lilly above confesses she has child porn on her PC.
The full story that you don't know,is her husband,Bill/William Ryan,a serving detective in Victorian Police Force, was lied about by her, cause he got a vasectomy (smart husband),a divorce and took the kids for a few years. She was on her own...WHY?

She set him up as drug dealer, animal and baby rapist, all of which came to no avail. But the heinous low life creature she is,installed child-porn and tried to set him up for it.But,Police being trained in psyche, that they are, realized she's just a schizophrenic patient and let her be,giving the stupid old tart license to continue to be a menace to society and herself.

I have rectified the problem and contacted Ballarat Health services and dropped this note by emai...The Federal Police is next.

"There are a number of forums, that Suzy Ryan of Ballarat/Wendouree? where she states she has child porn on her PC,that Ballarat Police,Ballarat Mental Health,Frankston Hospital ,not to mention the dozens of individuals she accuses as blood sacificing satanic occultist, baby raping, beastiality types. She has caused alot of pain to people, over the years on many online forums.Even naming her ex-husband,Bill Ryan, allegedely,a serving detective in Victorian Police,as a peadophile and drug dealer.

She goes by the monicker of True Lilly/Vera Susa, her phone number is 0424705576,email: true-lilly@hotmail.com

If you decide to follow this through, with your own administrative body,or Ballarat Police,or a combined interview,I'm happy to make myself available at above written details or serve as a witness in court.I will,if you answer and show interest, collect all the data I can, besides her fabricated stories of being car bombed and beaten into hospital twice, she has caused much pain,to herself, people around her and the online community, she should be evaluated, but that is for your consideration and experience in this field to decide, thankyou for your time and consideration,my kind regards,Jason Cook

Yes, it is a GREAT PITY that the countless recent and new discoveries
(and RE-discoveries), of archeology, geology, biology and related fields
of science, that I tried, many times, on many sites, to collect together,
are constantly STALKED and SPAMMED OVER, by 'those' desperate that
people don't start to see, that, ALL PEOPLES, ALL OVER THE WORLD,
share common, TRULY ANCIENT HISTORIES, that ARE ALL FOUND IN
ONE SOURCE; THE HOLY SCRIPTURES of GOD'S WORD.

It is a great pity, because THAT ONE SOURCE, ALSO FORETOLD
and FOREWARNED of our Recent AND FUTURE HISTORIES.

It is a great pity that The Legion of twittering idiots that RELIGIOUSLY
FOLLOW ICKE and That Ilk, in constantly re-spreading INSANE MYTHS,
didn't join in sharing, comparing and correlating FACTS REVEALED in

Mayas in the USA controversy: You be the juror

Archaeological
zone 9UN367 at Track Rock Gap, near Georgia’s highest mountain,
Brasstown Bald, is a half mile (800 m) square and rises 700 feet (213 m)
in elevation up a steep mountainside. Visible are at least 154 stone
masonry walls for agricultural terraces, plus evidence of a
sophisticated irrigation system and ruins of several other stone
structures. Much more may be hidden underground. It is possibly the
site of the fabled city of Yupaha, which Spanish explorer Hernando de
Soto failed to find in 1540, and certainly one of the most important
archaeological discoveries in recent times.

Note: Due to the extreme popularity - and controversy - of this
article, the Examiner has created a sequal, which describes in detail
the research methodology used by these Native American scholars, and
invites readers to submit scientific evidence that either proves or
disproves the interpretations of the Track Rock terrace complex by
Native American scholars.
It is entitled, Mayas in the USA controversy . . . you be the juror.

BLAIRSVILLE, GA (December 21, 2011) -- Around the
year 800 AD the flourishing Maya civilization of Central America
suddenly began a rapid collapse. A series of catastrophic volcanic
eruptions were followed by two long periods of extreme drought
conditions and unending wars between city states.

Cities and agricultural villages in the fertile, abundantly watered,
Maya Highlands were the first to be abandoned. Here, for 16 centuries,
Itza Maya farmers produced an abundance of food on mountainside
terraces. Their agricultural surpluses made possible the rise of great
cities in the Maya Lowlands and Yucatan Peninsula. When the combination
of volcanic eruptions, wars and drought erased the abundance of food,
famines struck the densely populated Maya Lowlands. Within a century,
most of the cities were abandoned. However, some of the cities in the
far north were taken over by the Itza Maya and thrived for two more
centuries.

In 1839, English architect, Frederick Catherwood, and writer, John
Stephens “rediscovered’ the Maya civilization on a two-year journey
through southern Mexico. When their book on the journey was published
in 1841, readers in Europe and North America were astounded that the
indigenous peoples of the Americas could produce such an advanced
culture. Architects in both continents immediately recognized the
strong similarity in the architectural forms and town plans
between
southern Mexico and the Southeastern United States. Most agronomists
were convinced that corn, beans and tobacco came to the natives of the
United States and Canada from Mexico.

In the decades since Catherwood’s and Stephens’ book, archaeologists
have not identified any ruins in the United States which they considered
to be built by a people who had originated in Mexico. This was
primarily due to their unfamiliarity with the descendants of the
Southeastern mound-builders -- tribes such as the Creeks, Alabamas,
Natchez, Chitimachas and Choctaws. In particular, the languages of the
Creek Indians contain many Mesoamerican words.

Historians, architects and archaeologists have speculated for 170
years what happened to the Maya people. Within a few decades, the
population of the region declined by about 15 million.
Archaeologists
could not find any region of Mexico or Central America that evidenced a
significant immigration of Mayas during this period, except in
Tamaulipas, which is a Mexican state that borders Texas on the Gulf of
Mexico. However, Maya influence there, seemed to be limited to a few
coastal trading centers. Where did the Maya refugees go? By the early
21st century, archaeologists had concluded that they didn’t go
anywhere. They had died en masse.

The evidence was always there

In 1715 a Jewish lass named Liube, inscribed her name and the date on
a boulder in Track Rock Gap. When Europeans first settled the Georgia
Mountains in the early 1800s, they observed hundreds of fieldstone
ruins, generally located either on mountaintops or the sides of
mountains. These ruins consisted of fort-like circular structures,
walls, Indian mounds veneered in stone, walls, terrace retaining walls
or just piles of stones. Frontiersmen generally attributed these
structures to the Indians, but the Cherokees, who briefly lived in the
region in the late 1700s and early 1800s, at that time denied being
their builders.

By the mid-20th century many Georgians held little reverence for
Native American structures. Dozens of Indian mounds and stone masonry
structures were scooped up by highway contractors to use in the
construction of highways
being funded by the Roosevelt Administration.
Providing jobs and cheap construction materials seemed more important in
the Depression than preserving the past.

During the late 20th century, the Georgia state government took an
active role in preserving some of the stone ruins. Archaeologists
surveyed a few sites. One of the better known ruins became Fort
Mountain State Park. For the most part, however, the stone ruins
remained outside the public consciousness.

In 1999 archaeologist Mark Williams of the University of Georgia and
Director of the LAMAR Institute, led an archaeological survey of the
Kenimer Mound, which is on the southeast side of Brasstown Bald in the
Nacoochee Valley. Residents in the nearby village of Sautee generally
assume that the massive five-sided pyramidal mound is a large wooded
hill. Williams found that the mound had been partially sculpted out of
an existing hill then sculpted into a final form with clay. He
estimated the construction date to be no later than 900 AD. Williams
was unable to determine who built the mound.

Williams is a highly respected specialist in Southeastern archaeology
so there was a Maya connection that he did not know about. The
earliest maps show the name Itsate, for both a native
village at Sautee and another five miles away at the location of the
popular resort of Helen, GA. Itsate is what the Itza Mayas called
themselves. Also, among all indigenous peoples of the Americas, only the
Itza Mayas and the ancestors of the Creek Indians in Georgia built
five-side earthen pyramids
as their principal mounds. It was commonplace
for the Itza Maya to sculpt a hill into a pentagonal mound. There are
dozens of such structures in Central America.

The name of Brasstown Bald Mountain is itself, strong evidence of a
Maya presence.
A Cherokee village near the mountain was named Itsa-ye,
when Protestant missionaries arrived in the 1820s. The missionaries
mistranslated “Itsaye” to mean “brass.” They added “town” and soon the
village was known as Brasstown. Itsa-ye, when translated into English,
means “Place of the Itza (Maya).”

Into this scenario stepped retired engineer, Cary Waldrup, who lives
near Track Rock Gap. In 2000 he persuaded the United States Forest
Service to hire a professional archaeologist from South Africa, Johannes
Loubser, to study the famous Track Rock petroglyphs, and also prepare a
map of the stone walls across the creek in site 9UN367. Waldrup and his
neighbors felt that the stone structure site deserved more professional
attention.
They collected contributions from interested citizens in
Union County, GA to fund an archaeological survey by Loubser’s firm,
Stratum Unlimited, LLC.

Loubser’s work was severely restricted by his available budget, but
his discoveries “opened up the door” for future archaeological
investigations.
His firm dug two test pits under stone structures to
obtain soil samples. In conjunction with the highly respected
archaeological firm of New South Associates in Stone Mountain, GA he
obtained radiocarbon dates for the oldest layer of fill soil in a test
pit, going back around 1000 AD. He also found pottery shards from many
periods of history. Loubser estimated that some of the shards were made
around 760 AD – 850 AD. This is exactly when Maya population began to
plummet.

Loubser described the 9UN367 archaeological site as being unique in
the United States
, and stated that examples of such sites are only found
elsewhere in the Maya Highlands and South America.
However, he did not
present an explanation for who built the stone walls. He was in a
conundrum. The Eastern Band of Cherokees had labeled Track Rock Gap as a
“Cherokee Heritage Sacred Site.” He had been led to believe that the
area had occupied by the Cherokee Indians for many centuries, yet he
also knew that the Cherokees never built large scale public works. In
fact, the Cherokees established a handful of hamlets in the extreme
northeastern tip of Georgia during the 1700s, but the western side of
Brasstown Bald Mountain, where Track Rock is located, was not official
Cherokee territory until 1793.

Shared research between scholars

The People of One Fire is an alliance of Native American scholars
(and their archaeologist friends)

that was formed in 2006 after the Georgia Department of Transportation
refused to retract a press release which blatantly contradicted several
studies by nationally respected archaeologists. Much of its research has
focused on tracing the movement of people, ideas and cultivated plants

from Mesoamerica and Caribbean Basin to North America. By instantly
sharing research rather than hoarding information, very rapid advances
have been made in the past five years
concerning the history of the
indigenous people of North America.

The archaeological site would have been particularly attractive to
Mayas because it contains an apparently dormant volcano fumarole that
reaches down into the bowels of the earth. People of One Fire
researchers have been aware since 2010 that when the English arrived in
the Southeast, there were numerous Native American towns named Itsate
in Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina and western North Carolina. They
were also aware that both the Itza Mayas of Central America and the
Hitchiti Creeks of the Southeast actually called themselves Itsate
. . . and pronounced the word the same way. The Itsate Creeks used
many Maya and Totonac words. Their architecture was identical to that of
Maya commoners. The pottery at Ocmulgee National Monument (c 900 AD) in
central Georgia is virtually identical to the Maya Plain Red pottery
made by Maya Commoners. However, for archaeologists to be convinced
that some Mayas immigrated to the Southeast, an archaeological site was
needed that clearly was typical of Mesoamerica, but not of the United
States.

In July of 2011, Waldrup furnished a copy of the 2000 Stratum
Unlimited, LLC archaeological report to People of One Fire members.
Those with experiences at Maya town sites instantly recognized that the
Track Rock stone structures were identical in form to numerous
agricultural terrace sites in Chiapas, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras.

Johannes Loubser’s radiocarbon dates exactly matched the diaspora from
the Maya lands and the sudden appearance of large towns with
Mesoamerican characteristics in Georgia, Alabama and southeastern
Tennessee. Track Rock Gap was the “missing link” that archaeologists
and architects had been seeking since 1841.

Archaeologists have been looking for vestiges of “high” Maya
civilization in the United States, when all along it was the commoners
“who got the heck out of Dodge City” when wars, famines, droughts and
almost non-stop volcanic eruptions became unbearable. The Itza Maya
middle class and commoners became the elite of such towns as Waka
(Ocmulgee National Monument) and Etalwa (Etowah Mounds) Just as
happened in England after the Norman Invasion, the separate cultures of
the commoners and nobility of the indigenous Southeast eventually
blended into hybrid cultures that became our current Native American
tribes.

<blockquote>A personal note from the author:

The first "real" archaeologist to realize a direct connection
between Mexico and the Southeast was Dr. Roman Piña-Chan, Director of
the Museo Nacional de Antropologia de Mexico . . . and also one of the
greatest archaeologists, who ever lived. I was just a dumb Gringo
student and he was the coordinator of my fellowship. I sat in his
office many a time in complete awe, as he pointed out such things as the
copper crown worn by the "Great Suns" in Southeastern towns being
identical to the crown worn by the Maya Sun God. Among his other
observations was that the turbans worn by the famous marble statues
found at Etowah Mounds, were exactly like the "badges" worn by Maya
slaves. In fact, the first time he noticed the connection was with this
comment, "Ricardo, why did your Indios make marble statues of
slaves?" It is a shame that more "real" American archaeologists didn't
stop by his office when he was alive.

There is absolutely no doubt whatsoever of a Maya presence in
Georgia. He is typing on this computer right now. Like most Georgia
and South Carolina Creeks, I carry a trace of Maya DNA. I think you
will find that some branches of the Seminoles and Cherokees also carry
Maya DNA. There are many Maya and Totonac words in the Creek
languages. The Creek house (chiki) was identical to the Totonac house
(also called chiki.)

The people whom Georgia archaeologists call Hitchiti Creeks, called themselves, Itsate . . . pronounced It-zja-tee. The people that are generally called today Itza Maya, formerly called themselves Itsate
. . . pronounced It-zja-tee. On my desk are site plans produced by
archeological teams from several major universities that describe
pentagonal earthen mounds built by the Itza Mayas in Chiapas and Belize,
which are identical to those in Georgia, such as the Kenimer Mound. In
short, if it builds the same buildings as the Itza Maya, says the same
words as the Itza Maya, and has the same DNA as the Itza Maya . . . by
golly, it must be an Itza Maya.

</blockquote>Getting There

The Track Rock Gap Archaeological Zone and Petroglyphs are owned by
the citizens of the United States and protected by the United States
Forestry Service. The archaeological zone is open to the public
year-round and may be accessed by a network of trails requiring rigorous
hiking. Both the Creek and Cherokee Indians consider this place to be a
very sacred, so please be respectful. By Federal law, the ruins and
petroglyphs may not be disturbed in any way.

Winter is the best time to view the stone structures, but the region
can get significant snow storms. Check the weather report before leaving
home. To obtain information on the hiking trails contact either the
Chattahoochee Forest Visitors Center in Blairsville, GA at 706-745-6928
or the main office of the Chattahoochee National Forest in Gainesville,
GA at 770-297-3000. Information on accommodations near Track Rock Gap
can be obtained from the Blairsville Area Chamber of Commerce at
877-745-5789. The region is a major tourist destination, so there are
plenty of restaurants, motels and bed & breakfast homes available.

If you have questions about Native American history, please contact Richard at NativeQuestion@aol.com.
These questions will be answered on his Native American History page.

Richard Thornton has written a book on the Archaeological Site
9UN367 and the evidence of the immigration of Mesoamerican refugees to
North America. It will be available from the publisher in early January
2012, and is entitled
, “Itsapa . . . the Itza Mayas in North America.” The
book includes over 250 full color, virtual reality images and
photographs, including pictures of identical Maya agricultural terrace
sites in Chiapas, Guatemala, Campeche and Belize. Indiana film maker
John Haskell is also producing a documentary film on the Maya diaspora.

The previously unknown story is fascinating.
For example, the famous “eye on hand” motif
found on Native American art
throughout the Southeast and Midwest
is the symbol of the Maya’s supreme deity,
Hunab-ku.

For information on reserving or ordering Thornton’s book, go to www.historyrevealedmedia.com.

Dec. 23 Update: The article headline was revised to clarify that
the connection between the Georgia ruins and the ancient Maya is still a
matter of debate rather than universally accepted fact.

Pilbara find points to earliest life

The evolution of oxygen-producing organisms has been pushed back another
270 million years through the discovery of new evidence in Western
Australia's Pilbara region.

The discovery is the most convincing evidence yet for the point at which
the Earth's current oxygenated atmosphere began to form, described as
one of the defining moments in the Earth's history.

David Flannery, who presented his discovery today at the

Fifth International Archean Symposium in Perth, Western Australia, argues the find is the earliest convincing sign of early oxygenic photosynthesis yet found.

Flannery, a doctoral student at the University of New South Wales Australian Centre for Astrobiology, says
signs of the presence of oxygen-producing organisms were found in the
rock formation known as the Tumbiana, which stretches for about 680
kilometres along the southern margin of the Pilbara crater in Western
Australia.

He says the evidence, which includes stromatolites, microbially induced
sedimentary structures and biomarkers - the remains of molecules
synthesised by oxygen-producing cyanobacteria, are well preserved in the
formation.

Cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae, are single-cell life forms that can photosynthesise oxygen.

"There is a debate in the literature as to when the first
oxygen-producing organisms evolved," he says, adding that the accepted
evidence is that this happened about 2.5 billion years ago.

It is generally accepted that the atmosphere became oxygenated about 2.45 billion years ago, says Flannery.

"But there are some who see evidence for cyanobacteria up to a billion years earlier than that."

from the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Photo by Gregor Richardson.

A University of Otago-led research team has sparked international
scientific interest by uncovering the world's oldest known high-altitude
human settlement, in the highlands of Papua New Guinea.

The 50,000-year-old camp sites, in PNG's Ivane Valley, that are the
subject of the Otago-led study were occupied during a relatively warm
phase of the last Ice Age - the Pleistocene - when New Guinea was joined
to Australia as part of the continent of Sahul.

Early humans were able to walk from PNG to what became modern Australia

, until the sea level rose at the end of the Ice Age, separating PNG from Australia about 10,000 years ago.
The ancient camp sites, 2000m above sea level, are reportedly the oldest
confirmed human settlement sites in PNG and Australia, and are also
among the oldest known outside Africa.

Otago anthropologist Prof Glenn Summerhayes and colleagues have just
published findings in the leading journal Science indicating that, as
early as about 50,000 years ago, groups were

regularly moving back and forth through extremely rugged territory
to exploit rich plant food resources in the PNG valley.
(((((of course!!!! it was not ONE WAY TRAFFIC ONLY!!!!!)))))))

Prof Summerhayes, the lead anthropologist, said that research resulting
from the work of his team from New Zealand, Australia and Papua New
Guinea could change the history of "modern" humans, showing that the
people who once lived in the PNG valley were highly adaptable and at the
forefront of global colonisation.

The research, supported by the Marsden Fund, was "rewriting textbooks"
and overturning some old theories, such as the view that early modern
humans spreading from Asia and across the Pacific were pre-adapted to
coastal life and moved by simply "hopping" from coast to coast.

In this case, people had clearly ventured far inland and into mountainous terrain
to gain high-value foods.

Northern hemisphere scientists had often focused on the spread of early
humans from Africa to Europe, but the Otago-led research showed
sophisticated modification of the environment in PNG by modern humans,
15,000 years before they colonised Europe.

"This is all new stuff - it's like going to Mars," Prof Summerhayes said.

"It's a bit like finding gold. Finding the earliest settlement [of Papua
New Guinea] is something we didn't really go out to look for."

A Roman Catholic priest had first noticed "incredible" ancient stone
tools being uncovered in the valley when foundation holes were being dug
for a new mission building in the 1960s.

Otago-led scientists had gone to the area in 2005 and in several
successive years, having to tramp in about 25km to the remote valley,
which could not be reached by fixed-wing aircraft.

Further residue and micro-wear analysis of tools later found at the site
by Otago-led researchers is being undertaken by Otago PhD student Anne
Ford.

The team uncovered camp sites buried by volcanic ash where people made
stone tools, hunted small animals and gathered nuts during the last Ice
Age.

The findings suggested a deliberate modifying of the landscape, most likely to clear forest and promote plant growth.

JINMIUM is a name associated with controversy.
It’s the name of an
aboriginal site in the Northern Territory
and it may have been occupied
for more than 100,000 years -
that’s at least twice as long as any other
place in Australia.

The claim upsets current thinking about the
arrival of the first Australians although the uproar is as much to do
with the techniques used to date Jinmium as with the question of its
antiquity. But as you’ll see tonight there’s more to Jinmium than just
its age.

The headlines are where people first heard the name Jinmium. ...And with
them the controversy and exaggerations began.... fuelled by newspaper
rivalry and the claims themselves, namely that signs of human occupation
had dated back to 116,000 years. The target of abuse was principal
scientist, Richard Fullagar.

“You read in the newspapers,” he said, “ that Richard Fullagar argues
that humans have been in Australia 176,000 years ago and stuff like
that. And so there's then a kind of mis-information going on which
clearly clouds the views of many people and fellow scientists as well
I'm sure. You're not quite sure what to believe.”

The accepted belief has been that people may have reached Australia’s
northern shores 60,000 years ago. The evidence had come from a hundred
kilometres inland. Stone tools had been discovered buried deep in
ancient sand.

Then, the papers told us, Jinmium, on the eastern margins of the
Kimberley, may have had human visitors 116,000 years ago, double any
previous claims. If the dates are correct it challenges a number of
theories. Among them, the story of how all modern humans colonised
the world.

The most popular explanation begins in Africa nearly 2 million years ago
with the spread of Homo erectus, a more primitive species of human,
through Europe and Asia. Although these people reached the edge of the
Pacific they didn’t have the brain power to make the sea voyage to
Australia. That was left to taller, smarter Homo sapiens, the more
modern humans who left Africa between 150 and 200,000 years ago. Along
the way they replaced Homo erectus. At least that’s what the
“Out-of-Africa” theory proposes.

But there are some like archaeologist Dr Alan Thorne who believe only
one species of human is involved. For him, so-called Homo erectus was
Homo sapiens and could have reached Australia at any time. He’s quick to
point out the Jinmium dates might be a problem for the Out-of-Africa
theory.

Alan explains. “Certainly if the dates for human occupation do go beyond
100,000 years, certainly if they were 150,000 years then the people who
propose a recent “out of Africa” scenario have got very big problems;
because they would have to have these people in Africa inventing the
bicycle so they can peddle round to Java to catch the first rafts to
Australia. For me there is no problem. It can be any date at all because
for me people were turning into modern humans everywhere. And therefore
whenever the modern humans who lived in south east Asia decided to
paddle their canoes or rafts or whatever and landed in Australia and set
up shop here that's fine by me.”

But as the team on the Jinmium dig discovered it wasn’t just the claims
of deep antiquity that caused controversy. As Richard Fullagar put it,
“The debate about Jimnium, if we can call it that,
has hinged very much on
a dating game;
between
luminescence dating in particular between optical dating and thermal
luminescence dating and in many ways between individuals, between Bert
Roberts and David Price; and ah in some ways that kind of debate
clarifies particular issues and it certainly has for me, a number of
issues and I can’t see that as being a bad thing.”

David Price, a geo-chronologist at the University of Wollongong, did the
principal dating at Jinmium using a technique known as TL or
thermoluminescence. It uses a kind of natural clock built into grains of
ordinary sand to determine when they were last exposed to sunlight.
Bert Roberts, of Melbourne’s La Trobe University, on the other hand
favours a slightly different (and more modern) technique called OSL or
optically stimulated luminescence.

These days, world-edge prehistory can’t be done without sophisticated
dating technology and it’s become critically important to choose the
best technique for the job. The burden of proof to establish antiquity
with any degree of certainty has become much harder.

The bottom line here is that Bert believes the dates for Jinmium are
wrong. And his reasons are to do both with the technique used and
something unusual about Jinmium itself. “Well my concern with Jimnium is
very similar to a site which I've looked at in Cape York.” Bert said.
“This is a site that has very soft bedrock underneath the site and there
we dated it even with optical dating, OSL methods. And we found that
you get ages that could be greatly distorted if you have contaminant
grains getting re-worked from decomposed bedrock or rubble into the soil
profile even a few grains is enough to greatly distort your age, from
30,000 years to 120,000 years lets say. Now at Jimnium it’s a very
similar situation - very soft bedrock rubble and a very good chance that
you can move these grains into the soil profile. And that will greatly
distort the age and it will always be to increase the age. And given
that the interest in Jimnium was the extraordinarily old ages they've
obtained we have to be absolutely sure that it’s not corrupted in
exactly the same way as it was at Cape York. “

Suppose your sample contains just ten grains of sand and nine of them
were exposed to sunlight 2,000 years ago. But the tenth grain comes from
inside some soft rock that has crumbled and it’s been out of the light
for half a million years. Thermoluminescence can’t pick out the ring in.
It will tell you the whole sample is 50,000 years old. David Price is
aware of the problem but doesn’t think the Jinmium samples were
affected. “If that had been the case,” he points out, “one would expect
it to be a reasonably random process and you'd expect to see ages that
stick out rather obviously half way down the profile. But this wasn't in
fact the case. In this situation we have ages that range from something
like 2,000 years at the top of the excavation trench down to a 176,000
at the base of it and in between the ages all fall into sequence.“

Bert Roberts remains unconvinced. He is currently redating samples from
Jinmium using a technique he’s devised that can date individual grains
of sand. He says, “The only way to actually sort out the problem is to
look at single grains of sand because a grain of sand will either be the
correct date or it might be a contaminant grain. It will divide itself
in the good guys and the bad guys.”

Bert doesn’t expect to have the single grain dates for Jinmium until the
end of 1997. But in the meantime some preliminary radiocarbon dates
from charcoal found at Jinmium have recently been obtained which hint
that it’s much younger than the published thermoluminescence estimates.
“It’s consistent,” Bert claims, “with just about every other
geomorphological evidence we have which are the sediment profiles was
extremely pale in colour, nothing like as orange or as red as we’d
expected for a hundred thousand year old sediment. The deposit itself is
very shallow and the sediment accumulation rate makes much more sense
with the carbon dates than it does with the TL dates. And also there's
no stratigraphic break between the two thousand year old level and the
supposed fifty thousand year old level. All of those three things
together suggest the carbon chronology is the right chronology for the
site.”

Some of the harshest criticism Richard Fullagar received was for
publishing the Jinmium dates before exhaustive testing had been. But as
he explains,
“A large number of people knew about these ages
but we couldn't present any details without actually presenting a
paper. And it seems to me, well write the stuff up, and its open for
discussion; and why should the public not be involved in that sort of
thing as well. I mean publication is really releasing scientific
information, not just to your colleagues but also to the rest of the the
rest of the world. And it seemed a perfectly reasonable thing to do. Of
course you cop the criticism and you wear it and that's what's
happened. I mean it’s how science works.”

DEEP SEA VENT TEMPERATURES...

Deep sea vents teeming with new life

THE ocean's deepest volcanic vents, kilometres below the surface,
are teeming with life forms never before seen that thrive near super-hot
underwater geysers, according to a new study.

Eyeless shrimps and white-tentacled anemones have ben photographed
bunched around cracks in the ocean floor spewing mineral-rich water
thatmay top 450C
, researchers reported today.*

The vents - baptised the Beebe Vent Field in honour of the first scientist to venture
into the deep ocean - were discovered on the Caribbean seafloor in the Cayman
Trough, south of the Cayman Islands.

Some 5km below the surface, the trench is home to the world's deepest known
"black smoker" vents, so called for the cloudy fluid that gushes from them.

During an expedition in 2010
, a team led by marine geochemist Doug Connelly
of Britain's National Oceanography Centre and University of Southampton
biologist Jon Copley used a deep-diving robot submarine to explore the trough.

The researchers also found previously unknown vents on the upper
slopes of nearby Mount Dent, which rises some 3km from the sea floor.

Its peak is the same distance beneath the surface waves.

"Finding black smoker vents on Mount Dent was a complete surprise," Connelly said
in a statement.
"Hot and acidic vents have never been seen in an area like this before."

The discoveries suggested that
active deep-sea volcanic vents
were more widespread
around the globe
than previously thought
,

he said.

Cameras on the submarine captured startling images of a new species
of ghostly-pale shrimp - dubbed Rimicaris hybisae - that had gathered
in clusters of up to 2000 specimens per square metre.

Lacking normal eyes, the shrimp have a light-sensing organ on their backs,
presumably to help them navigate in the faint glow of the deep-sea vents,
said the study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Communication.

A related species, Rimicaris exoculata, has been found at the edge of another
deep-sea vent 4000km away on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

"Studying creatures at these vents and comparing them with species
at other vents around the world will help us to understand how animals disperse
and evolve in the deep ocean," Copley said.

"One of the big mysteries of deep-sea vents is how animals are able to disperse
from vent field to vent field, crossing apparently large distances."

Elsewhere at the Beebe Vent Field, the scientists saw hundreds of white anemones
lining the cracks where warm, copper-rich water seeps from the sea bed.

The vents on Mount Dent also thronged with the new shrimp, along with a
snake-like fish, an unknown species of snail and a flea-like crustacean
called an amphipod.

A SEVEN-pronged starfish, a mysterious pale octopus and a new kind
of yeti crab are among a teeming community of previously undiscovered
life on the sea floor near Antarctica, British researchers say.

The species, described this week on the online journal PloS
Biology, were first glimpsed in 2010 when researchers lowered a robotic
vehicle to explore the East Scotia Ridge deep beneath the Southern
Ocean, between Antarctica and the tip of South America.

The dark and remote area is home to hydrothermal vents, which are deep-sea
springs that spew liquid at temperatures of up to 382 degrees Celsius
and have previously been found to host unusual life forms in other parts
of the world.

"Hydrothermal vents are home to animals found nowhere else on the planet
that get their energy not from the Sun but from breaking down chemicals,
such as hydrogen sulphide," said lead researcher Alex Rogers of Oxford University.

A DARWIN boy may help re-write Australia's history after unearthing
what he believes is a 500-year-old Portuguese swivel gun on a Northern
Territory beach.

Christopher Doukas made the discovery at Dundee Beach,
about two hours' drive from Darwin, when tides dipped to exceptional lows
in January 2010, and he could walk out a long way from shore.

The boy, now aged 13, saw the item poking out of mud,
dug it out with his father and took it back to his home.

"As soon as we got it back into Darwin my dad got an angle grinder and
nicked a little bit of it. We saw it was bronze, so we knew it was old,"
Christopher said.

Research on the internet showed the item, about the size of a rifle,
bore a striking resemblance to Portuguese swivel guns, used as
anti-personnel weapons on ships in the 16th Century.

In July last year Christopher's mother, Barbara, alerted staff at the
Darwin Museum to the find, and sent in photos that she was told seemed
to indicate it was the genuine article.

But it has only been in the past few weeks, after speaking to her
local MP, that she has been asked to bring it in for further
examination.

Christopher said a similar item had sold in Britain for 8000 pounds (about $12,000),
and he would be interested in selling the gun to a museum.

Portugal occupied Timor from 1515 until 1975, although it is hotly debated
whether Portuguese explorers made it to Australia, about 700km away.

Early maps from France in the 1500s appear to show part of Northern Australia,
which some have cited as evidence Portuguese explorers arrived during that period,
although that interpretation is controversial.

Local historian Peter Forrest was sceptical Portuguese explorers reached
Northern Australia in the 1500s, but if the find was a genuine swivel gun
from that period it would be grist for the mill for people that believed the theory,
he said.

It still needed to be demonstrated that the location of the find had some
connection with Portuguese contact and the item hadn't washed up or been
left there by antique dealers in the 1800s.

Mr Forrest
said there was no independent evidence of any Portuguese contact
with that part of Australia during the 1500s and quite a lot of evidence that there
was no such contact.

"I think it is jumping to a very premature conclusion to link that object with
a Portuguese presence in the top end of the territory of any great antiquity," he said.

"Even if it happened, so what? What were the consequences?"
he said.

The earliest authenticated European contact with Australia
was in 1606 by a Dutch vessel Duyfken.

"no independent evidence", IS, in itself, A GREAT LIE.

There is plenty of, INDEPENDENT OF THE ACCEPTED LINE/LIE EVIDENCE.
It is getting "The Officials" TO RECOGNISE and STOP BURYING IT!

Remember, even WHILE The Australians and Dutch were planning,
The Celebration of Their 400 YEAR Relationship,
kids were still being "OFFICIALLY TAUGHT IN SCHOOLS", that those
early Dutch contacts "are myths"!

Oh, Mr. Forrest, you sound bitter. Actually you sound like a jealous, foot stomping child,
who got beaten to the best prizes, by the poor kids.

But I'll offer an answer to your last question (as the preceding one is too childish),
and suggest that "THE CONSEQUENCES", along with all the other known lies and
insane myths, TAUGHT 'as' History: it helped BLIND THE WORLD, FOR HUNDREDS
of Years, to THE REVELATIONS that GOD TOLD US TO WATCH FOR, and, GAVE

HUNDREDS of Years TO THE BEASTLY, to "TEACH" The World to DENY THE TRUTH
of THE HOLY SPIRIT of GOD, or at the 'very least', HATE AND BLAME HIM, For All

Three crew members are thought to have died on a South Korean fishing boat
that caught fire in Antarctica.

"Three crew members are still missing and are believed to
have died in the fire in the vessel's accommodation block,''
the New
Zealand Rescue Coordination Centre said.

Another 37 fishermen were rescued - seven sustained burn injuries,
two of which were serious.

The 51-metre (167ft) Jeong Woo 2 issued a distress call early on Wednesday.

It got into trouble in the Ross Sea, about 600km (375 miles) north of
the US McMurdo Antarctic base.

Two other South Korean fishing vessels rushed to evacuate the crew members.

They were being medically assessed and would be transferred to the US research ship Nathaniel B. Palmer, which was ''steaming north to meet them'',
said the New Zealand rescue authorities.

The two rescue boats remain stuck due to ice and fog conditions, it added.

The Nathaniel B. Palmer has medical facilities on board and
will sail to the McMurdo base, where flights to New Zealand are
available.

The incident happened about 3,700km (2,000 miles) south-east of New Zealand.

The weather in the area is calm and relatively mild,
according to a Reuters report. Ships in the area would usually be
fishing for toothfish, a valuable species known as the ''white gold'' of
the Southern Ocean.

The Jeong Woo 2 was built in Japan and is registered in Busan, South Korea,
according to the Associated Press News Agency.

Last month, a Russian fishing boat hit an iceberg in ice-filled waters
off Antarctica, leaving its 32-member crew stranded for 12 days.

The Sparta was eventually repaired and managed to sail into a New Zealand port.

Australia’s Desert Country

One third of Australia’s land is desert. Australia has 10 deserts of which the largest is the Great Victoria Desert, covering just under 5 percent of the country. Ironically, the Great Victoria Desert is not located in Victoria but is in Western Australia and South Australia. The Great Victoria Desert covers 348,750 square kilometres which makes it around one and a half times bigger than the UK or slightly smaller than Montana.

Australia’s first recorded earthquake after white settlement occurred at Port Jackson, New South Wales in June, 1788 and lasted for about 3 seconds.

Other earthquakes recorded in early Australian history were:

■Hobart in 1827
■South Australia 1837
■Melbourne in 1841
■Perth in 1849.
The first recorded deaths in Australia caused by earthquakes occurred in 1902, at Warooka, South Australia. Two people died of shock after a Richter magnitude 6.0 earthquake.

A train line damaged by an earthquake
In 1917, one miner died and 5 were injured in an underground rock fall triggered by an earthquake in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.

In the last 80 years, there have been 17 earthquakes in Australia registering 6.0 or more on the Richter Scale. This is a rate of about one earthquake every five years, compared to the world average of about 140 per year.

Although the larger Australian earthquakes have caused significant damage, they are much smaller in strength than the world's most-damaging earthquakes. Until Newcastle's December 1989 earthquake, the damage caused by earthquakes in Australia had been comparatively low.

Quakes that Shook the Nation
Here is a list of some of the major earthquakes to have occured in Australia in recent times:

1 March 1954, Adelaide, South Australia
Adelaide was awakened by a loud rumbling sound. This was followed by shaking, severe enough to crack walls and loosen plaster and chimneys from many houses. Although minor compared to many overseas quakes, the Adelaide earthquake was (at magnitude 5.4) severe enough to cause damage estimated at $350 million (1997 values). No serious injuries were reported.

October 1968, Meckering, Western Australia
One of the more serious Australian earthquakes in fairly recent years occurred at the small town of Meckering. Residents reported seeing ground waves as well as experiencing difficulty when driving as the 6.9 Richter magnitude earthquake struck. Old buildings collapsed, railway lines were buckled and pipelines fractured, and a 37 kilometres long fault scarp (up to 2.5 metres high) was caused. Sixteen injuries were reported and the total cost of damage estimated $50 million.

22 January 1988, Tennant Creek, Northern Territory
Significant earthquakes of magnitudes 6.3, 6.4 and 6.8 occurred near Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. These resulted in large, long ground ruptures and a 35 kilometre fault (up to 2 metre displacement) which warped underground gas pipelines, but caused only minor damage to the hospital and some homes in the town.

28 December 1989, Newcastle, New South Wales
At 10.27am, Newcastle, Australia's sixth largest city, was partially devastated by a moderate earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter Scale. The Newcastle earthquake, the first lethal one in Australia, claimed 13 lives.

The devastation to buildings and other structures was extensive, which was unusual for a relatively-small magnitude earthquake. This was due mainly to an underlying, thin layer of alluvium, which appeared to magnify ground motion (shaking). The epicentre was located 15km West Southwest of the city centre, near Boolaroo.

August 1994, Ellalong, New South Wales
A damaging earthquake again affected the Hunter region of NSW, this time in the Ellalong-Cessnock area. Measuring 5.4 on the Richter Scale, it became our third most-damaging. Several homes, hotels and other buildings suffered seriously and up to 1,000 homes were partly damaged. Infrastructure, commercial and industrial losses also occurred. Insurance payouts were $38 million and total damage costs exceeded $150 million (1997 values).

The End of a Myth

A map showing the Earth's tectonic plates and
earthquake zones.
(see the text on the left for more information)
Despite Australia's seemingly low-risk situation in the middle of one of Earth's larger tectonic plates, we have had many earthquakes larger than that of Newcastle. The map to the right shows that Australia is in the middle of the Australian-Indian Plate.

The Australian Geological Survey Organisation in Canberra estimates that on average, the Australian region experiences an earthquake of at least this size, or larger, every 13-15 months.

Most of these earthquakes have been in low populated areas, so for many years people thought Australia could not be affected by this natural disaster. The Newcastle experience dispelled this myth!

Australian Geology
Due to Australia's geological position, we are prone to what seismologists call 'intra-plate' earthquakes.

These are different to the more familiar plate-margin earthquakes, common in areas like California in the USA and in Japan.

Is there a risk of a volcanic eruption in Australia ?

http://home.iprimus.com.au/foo7/volcmap.html

Mount Gambier ( Eastern South Australia ) Australia's youngest volcano.
A volcano filled with water. Erupted 4,500 years ago
"...volcanic activity must be considered a serious environmental hazard and risk for the Australian mainland. " Source: The risk of volcanic eruption in mainland Australia - E. B. Joyce.............................The Western Victorian Volcanic Plains are the third largest in the world and exceeded only by the Deccan in western India, and the Snake River Plateau in the United States ( Idaho-Nebraska ).

The Victorian Volcanic Plains are located in Western Victoria and covers over 2.3 million ha (10.36% of the State).
It stretches from Portland in the west to Craigieburn in the east and from Clunes in the north to Colac in the south.........................................“ There are around 400 volcanoes stretching from the Western District of Victoria into the Western Uplands around Ballarat wave and to the north of Melbourne around Kyneton and Kilmore, in some parts of the Eastern Uplands such as to the north of Benambra, and across to the South Australian border near Mt Gambier.
A volcanic eruption in the Western Uplands could potentially see lava flows and ash falls impacting on Melbourne.

There is also similar volcano risk present in various provinces in Far North Queensland, stretching from south-west of Townsville to near Cairns and up to Cooktown in the Far North. There are more than 380 volcanoes in total across this part of Queensland.
A future eruption in any of these regions would be unlikely to come from an existing volcano (as the volcanoes there are generally considered to be 'once only’ erupters).
Rather, future eruptions would occur at new sites nearby.
The geological record shows that new volcanoes in these areas have erupted perhaps every 2000 years in the past 40,000 years—and given there has not been a major eruption there for the past 5000 years, a significant eruption seems well overdue. " (3)

Narcissistic Personality Disorder
By Psych Central Staff

http://psychcentral.com/disorders/sx36.htm

Narcissistic Personality Disorder is characterized by a long-standing pattern of grandiosity (either in fantasy or actual behavior), an overwhelming need for admiration, and usually a complete lack of empathy toward others. People with this disorder often believe they are of primary importance in everybody's life or to anyone they meet. While this pattern of behavior may be appropriate for a king in 16th Century England, it is generally considered inappropriate for most ordinary people today.

People with narcissistic personality disorder often display snobbish, disdainful, or patronizing attitudes. For example, an individual with this disorder may complain about a clumsy waiter's "rudeness" or "stupidity" or conclude a medical evaluation with a condescending evaluation of the physician.

In laypeople terms, someone with this disorder may be described simply as a "narcissist" or as someone with "narcissism." Both of these terms generally refer to someone with narcissistic personality disorder.

Symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder
In order for a person to be diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) they must meet five or more of the following symptoms:

•Has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
•Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
•Believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)
•Requires excessive admiration
•Has a very strong sense of entitlement, e.g., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations
•Is exploitative of others, e.g., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends
•Lacks empathy, e.g., is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others
•Is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her
•Regularly shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes

Specifically:

Characteristics of Narcissistic Women

http://www.livestrong.com/article/72413-characteristics-narcissistic-women/

Women who are narcissistic think about themselves before others and act as if the world revolves around them. Women who have narcissistic personality disorder also always put themselves first; however, the personality disorder affects their lives occupationally and socially. Other people are turned off by women with narcissistic personality disorder due to their lack of empathy, inability to relate to others, sense of grandiosity and arrogant behaviors and attitude.

Self-Centered
Many people prioritize themselves and sometimes act self-centered. Women who are narcissistic almost always act self-centered and have a hard time understanding why they can't maintain long-term relationships with girlfriends or maintain romantic relationships. They will blame relationship problems on others instead of taking any responsibility. For instance, if a woman who has a narcissistic personality disorder gets married and has children, she'll put her wishes and needs above those of her husband and children. She might spend money to buy herself designer clothes while her husband shops at consignment stores. She may get her nails and hair done instead of taking her daughter to ballet lessons.

Why Men Lose Attraction 10 Ugly Mistakes Women Make That Ruins Any Chances Of A Relationship CatchHimAndKeepHim.com
Sponsored Links Attention-Seeking Behavior
Women who are narcissistic need all eyes to be on them and they will do almost anything to make sure the attention is on them. A woman who's narcissistic will interrupt people in the middle of a conversation to turn the subject to herself. She might make her stories seem more dramatic. For instance, she might tell a group of people that her sister is in the hospital due to an almost fatal accident to gain sympathy, when her sister really went to the hospital for a broken arm.

A narcissistic woman might dress provocatively to get the attention of men and talk herself up when meeting a potential date. She might tell him that she runs her entire company or donates her extra time on the weekend to charity when she really doesn't. As long as she's getting undivided attention, she's happy.

Lack of Empathy
Lack of empathy leads to many social problems. When women can't relate to others, it impacts their ability to have meaningful relationships and can also cause problems in the workplace. For instance, a woman with a narcissistic personality disorder has a hard time reading social cues and responding to them. She might be flippant with someone who is sad or antagonize someone who is already angry.

Criticism
A woman who is narcissistic does not respond well to criticism, even if the criticism is thoughtful and constructive, but she's quick to criticize others. This can significantly impact her occupationally. A woman with this issue probably becomes angry and possible defiant when criticized by peers, supervisors, family and friends. She may respond with anger even though she feels deep embarrassment or shame.

Is 1:8,27
8 The daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard,
like a hut in a field of melons,
like a besieged city.
27 Zion shall be redeemed with justice,
and her converts with righteousness.

Is 2:3
Many peoples shall go and say,
“Come, let’s go up to the mountain of Yahweh,
to the house of the God of Jacob;
and he will teach us of his ways,
and we will walk in his paths.”
For out of Zion the law shall go forth,
and the word of Yahweh from Jerusalem.

Is 3:16,17
16 Moreover Yahweh said, “Because the daughters of Zion are haughty,
and walk with outstretched necks and flirting eyes,
walking to trip as they go,
jingling ornaments on their feet;
17 therefore the Lord brings sores on the crown of the head of the women of Zion,
and Yahweh will make their scalps bald.”

Is 4:3-5
3 It will happen, that he who is left in Zion, and he who remains in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even everyone who is written among the living in Jerusalem;
4 when the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from its midst, by the spirit of justice, and by the spirit of burning.
5 Yahweh will create over the whole habitation of Mount Zion, and over her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night; for over all the glory will be a canopy.

Is 8:18
Behold, I and the children whom Yahweh has given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from Yahweh of Armies, who dwells in Mount Zion.

Is 10:12,24,32
12 Therefore it will happen that, when the Lord has performed his whole work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the willful proud heart of the king of Assyria, and the insolence of his haughty looks.
24 Therefore the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, says “My people who dwell in Zion, don’t be afraid of the Assyrian, though he strike you with the rod, and lift up his staff against you, as Egypt did.
32 This very day he will halt at Nob. He shakes his hand at the mountain of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

Is 12:6
Cry aloud and shout, you inhabitant of Zion; for the Holy One of Israel is great in the midst of you!”

Is 14:32
What will they answer the messengers of the nation? That Yahweh has founded Zion, and in her the afflicted of his people will take refuge.

Is 16:1
Send the lambs for the ruler of the land from Selah to the wilderness, to the mountain of the daughter of Zion.

Is 18:7
In that time, a present will be brought to Yahweh of Armies from a people tall and smooth, even from a people awesome from their beginning onward, a nation that measures out and treads down, whose land the rivers divide, to the place of the name of Yahweh of Armies, Mount Zion.

Is 24:23
Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed; for Yahweh of Armies will reign on Mount Zion, and in Jerusalem; and before his elders will be glory.

Is 28:16
Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh, “Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone of a sure foundation. He who believes shall not act hastily.

Is 29:8
It will be like when a hungry man dreams, and behold, he eats; but he awakes, and his hunger isn’t satisfied; or like when a thirsty man dreams, and behold, he drinks; but he awakes, and behold, he is faint, and he is still thirsty. The multitude of all the nations that fight against Mount Zion will be like that.

Is 30:19
For the people will dwell in Zion at Jerusalem. You will weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the voice of your cry. When he hears you, he will answer you.

Is 31:4,9
4 For thus says Yahweh to me,
“As the lion and the young lion growling over his prey,
if a multitude of shepherds is called together against him,
will not be dismayed at their voice,
nor abase himself for the noise of them,
so Yahweh of Armies will come down to fight on Mount Zion and on its heights.
9 His rock will pass away by reason of terror,
and his princes will be afraid of the banner,”
says Yahweh, whose fire is in Zion,
and his furnace in Jerusalem.

Is 33:5,14,20
5 Yahweh is exalted, for he dwells on high.
He has filled Zion with justice and righteousness.
14 The sinners in Zion are afraid.
Trembling has seized the godless ones.
Who among us can live with the devouring fire?
Who among us can live with everlasting burning?
20 Look at Zion, the city of our appointed festivals.
Your eyes will see Jerusalem, a quiet habitation,
a tent that won’t be removed.
Its stakes will never be plucked up,
nor will any of its cords be broken.

Is 34:8
For Yahweh has a day of vengeance,
a year of recompense for the cause of Zion.

Is 35:10
The Yahweh’s ransomed ones will return,
and come with singing to Zion;
and everlasting joy will be on their heads.
They will obtain gladness and joy,
and sorrow and sighing will flee away.”

Is 37:22,32
22 this is the word which Yahweh has spoken concerning him. The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and ridiculed you. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.
32 For out of Jerusalem a remnant will go forth, and survivors will escape from Mount Zion. The zeal of Yahweh of Armies will perform this.’

Is 40:9
You who tell good news to Zion, go up on a high mountain.
You who tell good news to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with strength.
Lift it up. Don’t be afraid.
Say to the cities of Judah, “Behold, your God!”

Is 41:27
I am the first to say to Zion, ‘Behold, look at them;’
and I will give one who brings good news to Jerusalem.

Is 46:13
I bring near my righteousness, it shall not be far off, and my salvation shall not wait; and I will place salvation in Zion for Israel my glory.

Is 49:14
But Zion said, Yahweh has forsaken me, and the Lord has forgotten me.

Is 51:3,11,16
3 For Yahweh has comforted Zion; he has comforted all her waste places, and has made her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of Yahweh; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.
11 The ransomed of Yahweh shall return, and come with singing to Zion; and everlasting joy shall be on their heads: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
16 I have put my words in your mouth, and have covered you in the shadow of my hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and tell Zion, You are my people.

Is 52:1,2,7,8
1 Awake, awake, put on your strength, Zion; put on your beautiful garments, Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into you the uncircumcised and the unclean.
2 Shake yourself from the dust; arise, sit on your throne, Jerusalem: loose yourself from the bonds of your neck, captive daughter of Zion.
7 How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of good, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, Your God reigns!
8 The voice of your watchmen! they lift up the voice, together do they sing; for they shall see eye to eye, when Yahweh returns to Zion.

Is 59:20
A Redeemer will come to Zion, and to those who turn from disobedience in Jacob, says Yahweh.

Is 60:14
The sons of those who afflicted you shall come bending to you; and all those who despised you shall bow themselves down at the soles of your feet; and they shall call you The city of Yahweh, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

Is 61:3
to appoint to those who mourn in Zion, to give to them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Yahweh, that he may be glorified.

Is 62:1,11
1 For Zion’s sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until her righteousness go forth as brightness, and her salvation as a lamp that burns.
11 Behold, Yahweh has proclaimed to the end of the earth, Say you to the daughter of Zion, Behold, your salvation comes; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.

Is 64:10
Your holy cities are become a wilderness, Zion is become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.

Is 66:8
Who has heard such a thing? who has seen such things? Shall a land be born in one day? shall a nation be brought forth at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.

Jr 3:14
Return, backsliding children, says Yahweh; for I am a husband to you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:

Jr 4:6,31
6 Set up a standard toward Zion: flee for safety, don’t stay; for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction.
31 For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, the anguish as of her who brings forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, who gasps for breath, who spreads her hands, saying, Woe is me now! for my soul faints before the murderers.

Jr 6:2,23
2 The comely and delicate one, the daughter of Zion, will I cut off.
23 They lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roars like the sea, and they ride on horses, everyone set in array, as a man to the battle, against you, daughter of Zion.

Jr 8:19
Behold, the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people from a land that is very far off: isn’t Yahweh in Zion? Isn’t her King in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their engraved images, and with foreign vanities?

Jr 9:19
For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion, How are we ruined! we are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because they have cast down our dwellings.

Jr 14:19
Have you utterly rejected Judah? has your soul loathed Zion? why have you struck us, and there is no healing for us? We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of healing, and behold, dismay!

Jr 26:18
Micah the Morashtite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah; and he spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus says Yahweh of Armies: Zion shall be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest.

Jr 30:17
For I will restore health to you, and I will heal you of your wounds, says Yahweh; because they have called you an outcast, saying, It is Zion, whom no man seeks after.

Jr 31:6,12
6 For there shall be a day, that the watchmen on the hills of Ephraim shall cry, Arise you, and let us go up to Zion to Yahweh our God.
12 They shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow to the goodness of Yahweh, to the grain, and to the new wine, and to the oil, and to the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all.

Jr 50:5,28
5 They shall inquire concerning Zion with their faces turned toward it, saying, Come you, and join yourselves to Yahweh in an everlasting covenant that shall not be forgotten.
28 The voice of those who flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of Yahweh our God, the vengeance of his temple.

Jr 51:10,24,35
10 Yahweh has brought forth our righteousness: come, and let us declare in Zion the work of Yahweh our God.
24 I will render to Babylon and to all the inhabitants of Chaldea all their evil that they have done in Zion in your sight, says Yahweh.
35 The violence done to me and to my flesh be on Babylon, shall the inhabitant of Zion say; and, My blood be on the inhabitants of Chaldea, shall Jerusalem say.

Lm 1:4,6,17
4 The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn assembly;
all her gates are desolate, her priests do sigh:
her virgins are afflicted, and she herself is in bitterness.
6 From the daughter of Zion all her majesty is departed:
her princes are become like harts that find no pasture,
they are gone without strength before the pursuer.
17 Zion spreads forth her hands; there is none to comfort her;
Yahweh has commanded concerning Jacob, that those who are around him should be his adversaries:
Jerusalem is among them as an unclean thing.

Lm 2:1,4,6,8,10,13,18
1 How has the Lord covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger!
He has cast down from heaven to the earth the beauty of Israel,
And hasn’t remembered his footstool in the day of his anger.
4 He has bent his bow like an enemy, he has stood with his right hand as an adversary,
Has killed all that were pleasant to the eye:
In the tent of the daughter of Zion he has poured out his wrath like fire.
6 He has violently taken away his tabernacle, as if it were of a garden; he has destroyed his place of assembly:
Yahweh has caused solemn assembly and Sabbath to be forgotten in Zion,
Has despised in the indignation of his anger the king and the priest.
8 Yahweh has purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion;
He has stretched out the line, he has not withdrawn his hand from destroying;
He has made the rampart and wall to lament; they languish together.
10 The elders of the daughter of Zion sit on the ground, they keep silence;
They have cast up dust on their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloth:
The virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.
13 What shall I testify to you? what shall I liken to you, daughter of Jerusalem?
What shall I compare to you, that I may comfort you, virgin daughter of Zion?
For your breach is great like the sea: who can heal you?
18 Their heart cried to the Lord:
wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night;
Give yourself no respite; don’t let the apple of your eye cease.

Lm 4:2,11,22
2 The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold,
How are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter!
11 Yahweh has accomplished his wrath, he has poured out his fierce anger;
He has kindled a fire in Zion, which has devoured its foundations.
22 The punishment of your iniquity is accomplished, daughter of Zion; he will no more carry you away into captivity:
He will visit your iniquity, daughter of Edom; he will uncover your sins.

Lm 5:11,18
11 They ravished the women in Zion,
The virgins in the cities of Judah.
18 For the mountain of Zion, which is desolate:
The foxes walk on it.

Jl 2:1,15,23,32
1 Blow the trumpet in Zion,
and sound an alarm in my holy mountain!
Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,
for the day of Yahweh comes,
for it is close at hand:
15 Blow the trumpet in Zion!
Sanctify a fast.
Call a solemn assembly.
23 “Be glad then, you children of Zion,
and rejoice in Yahweh, your God;
for he gives you the former rain in just measure,
and he causes the rain to come down for you,
the former rain and the latter rain,
as before.
32 It will happen that whoever will call on the name of Yahweh shall be saved;
for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be those who escape,
as Yahweh has said,
and among the remnant, those whom Yahweh calls.

Jl 3:16,17,21
16 Yahweh will roar from Zion,
and thunder from Jerusalem;
and the heavens and the earth will shake;
but Yahweh will be a refuge to his people,
and a stronghold to the children of Israel.
17 “So you will know that I am Yahweh, your God,
dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain.
Then Jerusalem will be holy,
and no strangers will pass through her any more.
21 I will cleanse their blood,
that I have not cleansed:
for Yahweh dwells in Zion.”

Am 1:2
He said:
“Yahweh will roar from Zion,
and utter his voice from Jerusalem;
and the pastures of the shepherds will mourn,
and the top of Carmel will wither.”

Am 6:1
Woe to those who are at ease in Zion,
and to those who are secure on the mountain of Samaria,
the notable men of the chief of the nations,
to whom the house of Israel come!

Ob 1:17,21
17 But in Mount Zion, there will be those who escape, and it will be holy. The house of Jacob will possess their possessions.
21 Saviors will go up on Mount Zion to judge the mountains of Esau, and the kingdom will be Yahweh’s.

Mc 1:13
Harness the chariot to the swift steed, inhabitant of Lachish.
She was the beginning of sin to the daughter of Zion;
For the transgressions of Israel were found in you.

Mc 3:10,12
10 They build up Zion with blood,
and Jerusalem with iniquity.
12 Therefore Zion for your sake will be plowed like a field,
and Jerusalem will become heaps of rubble,
and the mountain of the temple like the high places of a forest.

Mc 4:2,7,8,10,11,13
2 Many nations will go and say,
“Come, and let us go up to the mountain of Yahweh,
and to the house of the God of Jacob;
and he will teach us of his ways,
and we will walk in his paths.”
For out of Zion will go forth the law,
and the word of Yahweh from Jerusalem;
7 and I will make that which was lame a remnant,
and that which was cast far off a strong nation:
and Yahweh will reign over them on Mount Zion from then on, even forever.”
8 You, tower of the flock, the hill of the daughter of Zion,
to you it will come,
yes, the former dominion will come,
the kingdom of the daughter of Jerusalem.
10 Be in pain, and labor to bring forth, daughter of Zion,
like a woman in travail;
for now you will go forth out of the city,
and will dwell in the field,
and will come even to Babylon.
There you will be rescued.
There Yahweh will redeem you from the hand of your enemies.
11 Now many nations have assembled against you, that say,
“Let her be defiled,
and let our eye gloat over Zion.”
13 Arise and thresh, daughter of Zion;
for I will make your horn iron,
and I will make your hoofs brass;
and you will beat in pieces many peoples:
and I will devote their gain to Yahweh,
and their substance to the Lord of the whole earth.

Zp 3:14,16
14 Sing, daughter of Zion! Shout, Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, daughter of Jerusalem.
16 In that day, it will be said to Jerusalem, “Don’t be afraid, Zion. Don’t let your hands be slack.”

Zc 1:14,17
14 So the angel who talked with me said to me, “Proclaim, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh of Armies: “I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy.
17 “Proclaim further, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh of Armies: “My cities will again overflow with prosperity, and Yahweh will again comfort Zion, and will again choose Jerusalem.”’”

Zc 2:7,10
7 ‘Come, Zion! Escape, you who dwell with the daughter of Babylon.’
10 Sing and rejoice, daughter of Zion; for, behold, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of you,’ says Yahweh.

Zc 8:2,3
2 Thus says Yahweh of Armies: “I am jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I am jealous for her with great wrath.”
3 Thus says Yahweh: “I have returned to Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. Jerusalem shall be called ‘The City of Truth;’ and the mountain of Yahweh of Armies, ‘The Holy Mountain.’”

Zc 9:9,13
9 Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion!
Shout, daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king comes to you!
He is righteous, and having salvation;
lowly, and riding on a donkey,
even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
13 For indeed I bend Judah as a bow for me.
I have filled the bow with Ephraim;
and I will stir up your sons, Zion,
against your sons, Greece,
and will make you like the sword of a mighty man.

Jerusalem:

The nations will come to Jerusalem

Is 2:2,3
2 It shall happen in the latter days, that the mountain of Yahweh’s house shall be established on the top of the mountains,
and shall be raised above the hills;
and all nations shall flow to it.
3 Many peoples shall go and say,
“Come, let’s go up to the mountain of Yahweh,
to the house of the God of Jacob;
and he will teach us of his ways,
and we will walk in his paths.”

Is 18:7
In that time, a present will be brought to Yahweh of Armies from a people tall and smooth, even from a people awesome from their beginning onward, a nation that measures out and treads down, whose land the rivers divide, to the place of the name of Yahweh of Armies, Mount Zion.

Is 60:3,5,10,11,14
3 Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.
5 Then you shall see and be radiant, and your heart shall thrill and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you.
10 Foreigners shall build up your walls, and their kings shall minister to you: for in my wrath I struck you, but in my favor have I had mercy on you.
11 Your gates also shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring to you the wealth of the nations, and their kings led captive.
14 The sons of those who afflicted you shall come bending to you; and all those who despised you shall bow themselves down at the soles of your feet; and they shall call you The city of Yahweh, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

Is 66:12,18
12 For thus says Yahweh, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream: and you shall suck of it; you shall be borne on the side, and shall be dandled on the knees.
18 For I know their works and their thoughts: the time comes, that I will gather all nations and languages; and they shall come, and shall see my glory.

Jr 3:17
At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of Yahweh; and all the nations shall be gathered to it, to the name of Yahweh, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the stubbornness of their evil heart.

Mc 4:2
Many nations will go and say,
“Come, and let us go up to the mountain of Yahweh,
and to the house of the God of Jacob;
and he will teach us of his ways,
and we will walk in his paths.”

Zc 8:22,23
22 Yes, many peoples and strong nations will come to seek Yahweh of Armies in Jerusalem, and to entreat the favor of Yahweh.”
23 Thus says Yahweh of Armies: “In those days, ten men will take hold, out of all the languages of the nations, they will take hold of the skirt of him who is a Jew, saying, ‘We will go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.’”

Zc 14:16-19
16 It will happen that everyone who is left of all the nations that came against Jerusalem will go up from year to year to worship the King, Yahweh of Armies, and to keep the feast of tents.
17 It will be, that whoever of all the families of the earth doesn’t go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, Yahweh of Armies, on them there will be no rain.
18 If the family of Egypt doesn’t go up, and doesn’t come, neither will it rain on them. This will be the plague with which Yahweh will strike the nations that don’t go up to keep the feast of tents.
19 This will be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all the nations that don’t go up to keep the feast of tents.

Sex abuse still rife in armed services
By Greg Ansley 5:30 AM Friday Jan 13, 2012 Email

Expand Australian Defence Minister Stephen Smith said sexual abuse would not be tolerated in the Defence Force. Photo / NZPAAlarming revelations in confidential military reports reveal that the Australian Defence Force is struggling to reduce levels of sexual abuse, bullying and other problems among its troops.

Despite a massive bid to shift the force's culture and seven reports probing almost every aspect of service life after a series of scandals, documents obtained by Channel Seven under freedom of information laws show little appears to have changed.

Most of the incidents were reported after the outrage of last year's Skype scandal, in which a cadet at the elite Australian Defence Force Academy filmed his seduction of a female colleague and broadcast it live to other cadets.

The incidents included in dozens of "hot issues briefs" obtained by Channel Seven ranged from rape and attempted murder to possession of child pornography, sexual assault, the concubinage of teenagers on base and further explicit videotaping.

The greatest number of complaints involved the navy, whose problems peaked with revelations of life on board the supply ship HMAS Success during an Asian deployment in 2009.

Subject to a separate report and pending action, these included inappropriate conduct towards women, workforce bullying, a "tribal culture" on board the ship, drunken and disreputable behaviour ashore, a breakdown in discipline and serious failures of command.

Even after the subsequent outcry, problems continued on board the Success.

The Channel Seven documents said one of its officers had been accused of inappropriate relationships with junior sailors and of filming them in the shower.

Videos of sexual acts with other sailors were also discovered, butdespite a record of similar behaviour the officer was transferred to another ship.

The documents also said that just four days after the first report into the original Success allegations, a sailor on the ship - now facing court martial - allegedly indecently assaulted two others in their cabin.

More serious was the charging of a sailor from the minehunter HMAS Yarra with aggravated sexual assault and strangulation with intent to murder.

In the army, a soldier was charged with rape, deprivation of liberty and assault involving a female civilian, another at the School of Artillery was found in possession of child pornography, and yet another was accused of housing two teenagers, aged 15 and 17, for two weeks in Sydney's Holsworthy barracks.

An air force member was charged with indecently assaulting a minor.

Defence Minister Stephen Smith said yesterday that such behaviour would not be tolerated.

"It is essential that the Defence Force promotes and enforces the highest standards of behaviour in line with modern community expectations and creates an environment where complaints can be aired and appropriately addressed," he said.

Smith already has a welter of disturbing reports to consider, continuing long lists of recommendations from the five inquiries established after the Skype scandal.

Most will be released this month, with the Government's response.

Still not getting it,the word of God that you espouse for others that you can't live up to.Do you hate and defy God?

Though Giglio means "lily" in Italian, the island's name is derived from Aegilium,
"Goat Island", a Latin transliteration of the Greek word for "little goat" (Aigýllion).

Mainly mountainous, it consists almost entirely of granites.

Psalms 45:1-17

To the director upon The Lilies.
Of the sons of Ko´rah. Mas´kil.
A song of the beloved women.

1
My heart has become astir with a goodly matter.
I am saying: “My works are concerning a king.”
May my tongue be the stylus of a skilled copyist.

2
You are indeed more handsome than the sons of men.
Charm has been poured out upon your lips.
That is why God has blessed you to time indefinite.

3
Gird your sword upon [your] thigh, O mighty one,
[With] your dignity and your splendor.

4
And in your splendor go on to success;
Ride in the cause of truth and humility [and] righteousness,
And your right hand will instruct you in fear-inspiring things.

5
Your arrows are sharp—under you peoples keep falling—
In the heart of the enemies of the king.

6
God is your throne to time indefinite, even forever;
The scepter of your kingship is a scepter of uprightness.

7
You have loved righteousness and you hate wickedness.
That is why God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of exultation
more than your partners.

8
All your garments are myrrh and aloeswood [and] cassia;
Out from the grand ivory palace stringed instruments themselves
have made you rejoice.

9
The daughters of kings are among your precious women.
The queenly consort has taken her stand at your right hand in gold of O´phir.

10
Listen, O daughter, and see, and incline your ear;
And forget your people and your father’s house.

11
And the king will long for your prettiness,
For he is your lord,
So bow down to him.

12
The daughter of Tyre also with a gift—
The rich ones of the people will soften your own face.

13
The king’s daughter is all glorious within [the house];
Her clothing is with settings of gold.

14
In woven apparel she will be brought to the king.
The virgins in her train as her companions are being brought in to you.

15
They will be brought with rejoicing and joyfulness;
They will enter into the palace of the king.

16
In place of your forefathers there will come to be your sons,
Whom you will appoint as princes in all the earth.

17
I will make mention of your name throughout all generations to come.
That is why peoples themselves will laud you to time indefinite, even forever.

Psalms 69:1-36

To the director on The Lilies. Of David.

1
Save me, O God, for the waters have come clear to the soul.

2
I have sunk down in deep mire, where there is no standing ground.
I have come into profound waters,
And a flowing stream itself has washed me away.

3
I have become tired by my calling out;
My throat has become hoarse.
My eyes have failed while waiting for my God.

4
Those hating me without a cause have become even more than the hairs of my head.
Those bringing me to silence, being my enemies for no reason, have become numerous.
What I had not taken by robbery I then proceeded to give back.

5
O God, you yourself have come to know my foolishness,
And from you my own guiltiness has not been hidden.

6
O may those hoping in you not be ashamed because of me,
O Sovereign Lord, Jehovah of armies.
O may those seeking you not be humiliated because of me,
O God of Israel.

7
For on your account I have borne reproach,
Humiliation has covered my face.

8
I have become one estranged to my brothers,
And a foreigner to the sons of my mother.

9
For sheer zeal for your house has eaten me up,
And the very reproaches of those reproaching you have fallen upon me.

10
And I proceeded to weep with the fasting of my soul,
But it came to be for reproaches to me.

11
When I made sackcloth my clothing,
Then I became to them a proverbial saying.

12
Those sitting in the gate began concerning themselves about me,
And [I was] the subject of the songs of drinkers of intoxicating liquor.

13
But as for me, my prayer was to you, O Jehovah,
At an acceptable time, O God.
In the abundance of your loving-kindness answer me with the truth of salvation by you.

14
Deliver me from the mire, that I may not sink down.
O may I be delivered from those hating me and from the deep waters.

15
O may not the flowing stream of waters wash me away,
Nor the depth swallow me up,
Nor the well close its mouth over me.

16
Answer me, O Jehovah, for your loving-kindness is good.
According to the multitude of your mercies turn to me,

17
And do not conceal your face from your servant.
Because I am in sore straits, answer me quickly.

18
Do come near to my soul, reclaim it;
On account of my enemies redeem me.

19
You yourself have come to know my reproach and my shame and my humiliation.
All those showing hostility to me are in front of you.

20
Reproach itself has broken my heart, and [the wound] is incurable.
And I kept hoping for someone to show sympathy, but there was none;
And for comforters, but I found none.

21
But for food they gave [me] a poisonous plant,
And for my thirst they tried to make me drink vinegar.

22
Let their table before them become a trap,
And what is for their welfare a snare.

23
Let their eyes become darkened so as not to see;
And cause their very hips to wobble constantly.

24
Pour out upon them your denunciation,
And may your own burning anger overtake them.

25
Let their walled camp become desolate;
In their tents may there come to be no dweller.

26
For the one whom you yourself have struck they have pursued,
And the pains of those pierced by you they keep recounting.

27
Do give error upon their error,
And may they not come into your righteousness.

28
Let them be wiped out of the book of the living ones,
And with the righteous ones may they not be written in.

29
But I am afflicted and aching.
May your own salvation, O God, protect me.

30
I will praise the name of God with song,
And I will magnify him with thanksgiving.

31
This will also be more pleasing to Jehovah than a bull,
Than a young bull displaying horns, splitting the hoof.

32
The meek ones will certainly see [it]; they will rejoice.
YOU who are seeking God, let YOUR heart also keep alive.

33
For Jehovah is listening to the poor ones,
And he will indeed not despise his very own prisoners.

34
Let heaven and earth praise him,
The seas and everything moving about in them.

35
For God himself will save Zion
And will build the cities of Judah;
And they will certainly dwell there and take possession of it.

36
And the offspring of his servants themselves will inherit it,
And those loving his name will be the ones to reside in it.

Thousands Flee Euro Crisis For New Life In Oz
73 Comments

8:46am UK, Friday January 13, 2012
Jonathan Samuels, Australia correspondent

Growing numbers of Europeans are fleeing the euro crisis for a new life in Australia.

In the wake of the global financial downturn and with the euro debt crisis still unfolding, many from Greece, Italy and Ireland are quitting their homeland and heading Down Under.

Figures from the Australian department of immigration show that it is the Irish who are especially keen to move south.

From 2009 to 2010, 1,280 Irish citizens were granted temporary
working visas. The following year it rose to 2,250 but in the last six
months alone the figure is already up to 3,100.

Australia has avoided the global financial crisis because of its huge
natural resources like coal and iron ore. Developing economies like
China are massive customers.

It is the strong economy that persuaded the Corbett family to move from their home in Cork to Sydney last May.

Aboriginal Stonehenge: Stargazing in ancient Australia - Page 3 16148252
Valentina Grande: Life is good in Australia

Rory and Mary Corbett, along with their two young children, had
enjoyed a holiday to Australia and knew it was somewhere they could
happily live.

As skilled workers they have been sponsored by their new employers.

Mrs Corbett said: "Even though my husband had a job, I had a job, it
was getting to the stage where there was more money going out than there
was coming in.

"And with all the austerity cuts that were happening as well,
education funds were being cut right back, hospital funding was being
cut, so we were just looking at our kids and thinking what kind of a
future have you guys got in this country."

With a huge grin on her face, Valentina Grande is serving customers
in the sunshine at the Papa Giovanni Italian restaurant opposite
Sydney's famous Bondi beach.

In Australia on a working holiday visa, she told Sky News: "In Italy
there isn't work, there isn't money, but here you can find, very easily,
a job and get good money and good tips."

Last year just one of the restaurant's employees was from Italy - now
there are eight. Every week more Italians come through the doors
looking for a job.

They are mainly young, single and desperate for a positive start to
their working lives in a place they know they will be well paid.

"Life is good here," Ms Grande said, "I get paid weekly. In Italy I
was paid monthly so if the restaurant didn't make money, you could work
for a few weeks and find you don't get paid at the end. Life there is
stressful."

Professor Stephen Castles from Sydney University is an expert in global migration.

He believes the influx of workers to Australia is welcome, especially
in sectors where recruitment is difficult, but creates worries for the
countries they are leaving.

"It is a huge loss," he said: "They are losing the people they will
need when the economy recovers, if the economy recovers, and there may
be global competition to attract those skills. Those counties might try
and attract their citizens back."

Even in Australia the outlook is not completely sunny. Australia
exports to Europe and the US, making it vulnerable to any serious drop
in Chinese and Indian demand for its minerals.

But for now it is seen by many refugees of the euro crisis as a place of opportunity and optimism.

Friday 13th Nightmare For The Eurozone
48 Comments

9:52am UK, Saturday January 14, 2012
Ed Conway, economics editor

You can say a lot of things about Standard & Poor's, but the one thing you cannot question is their sense of timing.

Last month, they could have chosen almost any day to warn that they
were placing the entire eurozone on watch for a possible downgrade; but
they elected to make the announcement just hours after Nicolas Sarkozy
and Angela Merkel used an emergency summit to promise to safeguard the
euro.

And
now they have chosen Friday the 13th to confirm that the majority of
those 15 nations put on negative watch have now been downgraded.

And, as if to twist the knife, it also emerged on Friday that talks
between Athens and private sector investors aimed at voluntarily
reducing the total amount of Greek debt had fallen through.

Aboriginal Stonehenge: Stargazing in ancient Australia - Page 3 16148720
Investors may ignore the credit ratings

And, to top it all off, clearing house LCH Clearnet raised its margin
requirement for those using it to buy Italian debt from 8.15% to 8.3%.

It is not just the date that is ironic. Against all expectations, the
eurozone had been looking tentatively more healthy in the past few
weeks.

The past seven days have seen successful debt auctions by two of the most troubled euro members - Spain and Italy.

The European Central Bank's emergency lending operations seemed to have calmed nerves significantly.

Now, it looks quite conceivable that eurozone policymakers will spend
the rest of the month firefighting the next round in the single
currency's crisis until they gather at the end of January for their
latest Brussels summit.

I understand that senior European financial officials were deep in a
key Brussels set of negotiations when they learnt - on their
blackberries - about the impending downgrades, and had to scramble to
come up with a strategy for downplaying the news.

Although it clearly has more of the wow factor, there is good reason
to suspect that the S&P downgrade (which includes France, Austria
and Italy, but not Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and Luxembourg,
which get to keep their AAA) will not be a hammer blow for the euro.

As I wrote when S&P
first announced that they were putting the euro area on creditwatch
negative, there are growing signs that investors are choosing to ignore
official credit ratings.

Aboriginal Stonehenge: Stargazing in ancient Australia - Page 3 16108785
A downgrade could affect Mr Sarkozy's presidential campaign

To put it another way, the fact that France will be AA rather than
AAA is unlikely to change investors' minds when it comes to buying (or
selling) French debt.

Nonetheless, a French downgrade (and for that matter a downgrade of
other major euro members) will trigger a downgrade of the EFSF - the
continent-wide rescue fund which was supposed to bolster the currency.

Moreover, it represents a serious political blow for Nicolas Sarkozy as he fights for re-election this year.

Italy suffers a downgrade of two notches, as do Portugal and Spain,
implying that S&P is particularly worried about their capacity to
withstand the crisis.

And when you read the statement accompanying the decisions,
the explanation of why the downgrades have happened is damning, saying:
"Policy initiatives taken by European policymakers in recent weeks may
be insufficient to fully address ongoing systemic stresses in the
eurozone".

It's equally intriguing to examine the countries which were spared a downgrade.

Germany hangs onto its AAA crown, and has its outlook put back on a
stable footing - implying it is nowhere near being downgraded.

Berlin might reasonably ask why it was lumped in with the rest of the
currency zone when its circumstances (which haven't really changed over
the past month) don't merit it.

Thanks to its part as the poster boy of austerity, Ireland keeps its
rating unchanged, but, at BBB+ it was close to junk status as it was.

Finland, which historically has one of the world's best debt-payment
records, almost alone in not having defaulted in any way during or after
WWII, retains its AAA rating, but is put on "outlook negative", which
means it still has the sword of damocles hanging over it.

And as of Friday evening there were three euro members which are junk
bond issuers, which in technical terms means they have ratings of below
BBB and in normal-person terms means their debt is regarded as highly
at risk of default. Greece (CC) is joined in that club by Portugal (BB)
and Cyprus (BB+) - home to many UK nationals.

But it may well be the breakdown of the Greek talks that prove the more serious of today's stories.

If, as the statement from the Institute for International Finance
suggests, it will be impossible for the investors and the Greeks to
reduce the country's debt voluntarily, it means the country will have to
go through a messy default.

That implies a wave of stress spreading through the financial system -
precisely the eventuality European policymakers were trying desperately
to avoid through these negotiations.

Over the course of Friday, the cost of borrowing for the affected
euro members rose sharply, although it dropped for Germany, as well as
the UK - both of which will be among the few AAA countries remaining.

Either way, both of these pieces of news are deeply worrying for the single currency - and bring forward its moment of truth.

Can its leaders unite and create a proper political and fiscal union,
or does this mean the beginning of the end for the world's biggest ever
economic project?

ISAIAH 60:

1
“Arise, O woman, shed forth light, for your light has come
and upon you the very glory of Jehovah has shone forth.
2
For, look! darkness itself will cover the earth,
and thick gloom the national groups;
but upon you Jehovah will shine
forth, and upon you his own glory will be seen.
3
And nations will certainly go to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your shining forth.

4
“Raise your eyes all around and see!
They have allof them been collected together; they have come to you.
From far away your own sons keep coming,
and your daughters who will be taken care of on the flank.
5
At that time you will see and certainly become radiant,
and your heart will actually quiver and expand,
because to you the wealthiness of the sea will direct itself;
the very resources of the nations will come to you.
6
The heaving mass of camels itself will cover you,
the young male camels of Mid´i·an and of E´phah.
All those from She´ba—they will come.
Gold and frankincense they will carry.
And the praises of Jehovah they will announce.
7
All the flocks of Ke´dar—they will be collected together to you.
The rams of Ne·ba´ioth—they will minister to you.
With approval they will come up upon my altar,
and I shall beautify my own house of beauty.

8
“Who are these that come flying just like a cloud,
and like doves to their birdhouse holes?
9
For in me the islands themselves will keep hoping,
the ships of Tar´shish also as at the first,
in order to bring your sons from far away,
their silver and their gold being with them,
to the name of Jehovah your God and to the Holy One of Israel,
for he will have beautified you.
10
And foreigners will actually build your walls,
and their own kings will minister to you;
for in my indignation I shall have struck you,
but in my goodwill I shall certainly have mercy upon you.

11
“And your gates will actually be kept open constantly;
they will not be closed even by day or by night,
in order to bring to you the resources of the nations,
and their kings will be taking the lead.
12
For any nation and any kingdom that will not serve you will perish;
and the nations themselves will without fail come to devastation.

13
“To you the very glory of Leb´a·non will come,
the juniper tree, the ash tree and the cypress at the same time,
in order to beautify the place of my sanctuary;
and I shall glorify the very place of my feet.

14
“And to you the sons of those afflicting you must go, bowing down;
and all those treating you disrespectfully must bend down at the very soles of your feet,
and they will have to call you the city of Jehovah, Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

15
“Instead of your proving to be one left entirely and hated,
with nobody passing through, I will even set you as a thing of pride to time indefinite,
an exultation for generation after generation.
16
And you will actually suck the milk of nations,
and the breast of kings you will suck;
and you will be certain to know that I, Jehovah, am your Savior,
and the Powerful One of Jacob is your Repurchaser.
17
Instead of the copper I shall bring in gold, and instead of the iron I shall bring in silver,
and instead of the wood, copper, and instead of the stones, iron;
and I will appoint peace as your overseers and righteousness as your task assigners.

18
“No more will violence be heard in your land,
despoiling or breakdown within your boundaries.
And you will certainly call your own walls Salvation and your gates Praise.
19
For you the sun will no more prove to be a light by day,
and for brightness the moon itself will no more give you light.
And Jehovah must become to you an indefinitely lasting light,
and your God your beauty.
20
No more will your sun set, nor will your moon go on the wane;
for Jehovah himself will become for you an indefinitely lasting light,
and the days of your mourning will have come to completion.
21
And as for your people, all of them will be righteous;
to time indefinite they will hold possession of the land, the
sprout of my planting, the work of my hands, for [me] to be beautified.
22
The little one himself will become a thousand,
and the small one a mighty nation.
I myself, Jehovah, shall speed it up in its own time.”

British explorers are preparing to drill through
almost two miles of ice into an Antarctic lake as they
seek clues about life one million years ago.

The team used a 'tractor train' to tow nearly 70 tonnes of equipment to the
Lake Ellsworth drilling site which is one of the most hostile environments on earth
as they prepare for the operation.

They will return in November to collect water and sediment from the buried lake
using space industry standard 'clean technology'.

British team: The UK flag flies at lake Ellsworth where the drilling will take place
later this year. 70 tonnes of equipment has since been moved into place ready for
the operation

They hope the samples will provide clues about the Earth's past climate.

It could also help scientists assess the present-day stability of the West
Antarctic Ice Sheet and implications for future rises in the sea level.

They used powerful tractors to tow heavy containers of equipment on sledges
and skis across deep snow and through steep mountain passes.

Final frontier: The British team will live in tents at the site as they collect samples from 1.8miles below the ice

The 155-mile journey through the Ellsworth Mountain Range took them three days to complete.

Scientists have been planning the investigation for more than 15 years.

The Lake Ellsworth Programme Principal Investigator, Professor Martin
Siegert from the University of Edinburgh, said: 'The completion of this
stage of the mission is a welcome one - we are now one step closer to
finding out if new and unique forms of microbial life could have evolved
in this environment.

'The samples we hope to capture from Lake Ellsworth
will be hugely valuable to the scientific community.

'This year we will complete and test both the water sampling probe and the sediment corer.

During phase two of the project researchers will use a high-pressure drill
to create a borehole through 1.8miles of ice.

They will then lower a titanium probe to measure and sample the water,
followed by a corer to extract sediment from the lake.

It will take around three days to drill through the ice and the scientists
will have about 24 hours to gather samples before the hole starts to freeze over.

Lake Ellsworth
is around 8.6 miles long, 1.2-1.8 miles wide and 150m deep,
around the size of Loch Katrine in the Trossachs, or Lake Windermere in the
Lake District.

Chris Hill, Advance Party Member and Lake Ellsworth Programme Manager said:
'This is a major milestone for the programme and we are delighted that
our complex logistical operations were a success this season.

'Working within the short Antarctic summer season adds pressure to our time on
the continent, which is why we had to plan two stages of the programme.'

The Lake Ellsworth programme is a consortium, funded by the Natural
Environment Research Council (NERC), between British Antarctic Survey
and the National Oceanography Centre - and the UK university sector.

More than 400 subglacial lakes
have so far been discovered
beneath Antarctica's vast ice sheet.

A Russian team hopes soon to penetrate and collect samples
from Lake Vostok in East Antarctica.

And I can assure you that "tintin" SPEWS THE SAME BITTER VENOM at 'Jews',

Unlike you, I'm not recruiting soldier salesmen to fight God, I'm not after

And unlike you, I don't deny The Holy Spirit of Truth, by denying that God

by trying to cram ALL THE HISTORY of ALL THE WORLD, ALL THE EARTH,

thousand years, of a few groups of people, in a young corner of the globe.

Unlike all of you, I'm not invested in selling any belief, but simply in living

Thing being revealed, that make clear sense of what your 'experts' couldn't
even begin to 'interpret' 1000, 100, 50 or even 5 years ago, like that there
was only one land mass, that long after Noah started dividing, and that there
was life on earth before oxygen formed, and the 'prince of the air', death
began his rule, AS GOD DESCRIBED.

Anyway, for anyone who does care, context needs time and place,
just as understanding time and place, needs context, so maybe
starting with some contextually different meanings of that word:
TIME

time 3117
time 4150
time 6256
time 8145
time 6471
time 227

then maybe working through the different meanings of the 'same' numbers,
and so on, through all Holy Scripture, you'll come to understand why the
'out of Egypt' lie, is so important to 'them', that it's the one thing 'they'
all agree to agree on, and demand the world accepts.

"The cable is going underneath here," says Benoit
Pirenne, standing at the water's edge on Canada's Vancouver Island.
"It's going out 500 miles (800km) in a big loop in the ocean, coming
back in the same place."

The Vancouver cable connects a network of scientific
instruments on the floor of the north Pacific, some as deep as 1.5 miles
(2.5km).

Set up by Pirenne and his colleagues at the University of
Victoria, and called Neptune Canada, they continuously monitor the
marine environment.

The scientists are harvesting large amounts of information,
including water pressure readings that help them better understand the
movement of tsunamis through oceans, which they hope will lead to more
accurate warning systems.

But they are also listening.

Pressure-sensitive microphones pick up the live sounds of
everything from whales and shipping to seismic activity and the movement
of tectonic plates, and this audio is shared with scientists all over
the world.

It's also now available to anyone else with an internet connection.

Ocean 'ears'

"This is like big ears placed on the bottom of the ocean,"
says Michel Andre, a bioacoustics expert at the Technical University of
Catalonia in Barcelona, as he listens to the audio being streamed live
from Vancouver.

Aboriginal Stonehenge: Stargazing in ancient Australia - Page 3 _57905112_globe304
Many locations marked on listentothedeep.com stream audio in real time

Andre's passion is the study of noise in the ocean, both
natural and man-made, and how it affects marine life including whales
and dolphins.

"Sound travels five times faster through water than through
air, and in the ocean it can travel for thousands of miles," he says.

To help the non-scientific community appreciate just how noisy the oceans have become, he's launched a website called listentothedeep.com which streams the live sounds from Vancouver, and 14 other ocean floor "observatories" around the world.

"Here you can hear the noise coming from a ship," says Andre as he clicks on a green dot in the Mediterranean.

The ship is on the surface of the sea, but its monotonous
engine sound eerily dominates the soundscape more than a mile below.

Software developed by Andre's team can identify a range of different sounds.

Aboriginal Stonehenge: Stargazing in ancient Australia - Page 3 _57905111_oceanearthquakeshot464
A graphic representation of the sound of the Japanese earthquake, 11 March 2011

"These coloured bars here represent the sound of sperm whales," he says.

"And if you click here, in the sound library, this is the noise of the Japanese earthquake."

An audio graph of bright orange shows the pattern of the
earthquake sound, which came from the Kushiro and Hatsushima
observatories off the coast of Japan, in March last year.

On Andre's site, the sound has been sped up to make it
audible to the human ear. It's a growing deep rumble, and a chilling
experience for anyone who followed the news of the devastating tsunami
that struck the Japanese mainland.

National security

For decades, the sounds of the deep sea were considered highly sensitive military data.

During the Cold War, the US Navy set up a network of
underwater microphones in many parts of the world to track Soviet
submarines.

Now the US Navy says it's not too concerned about friendly
civilian scientists listening in, but it is nervous about the opening up
of real time ocean sound to the general public.

Aboriginal Stonehenge: Stargazing in ancient Australia - Page 3 _57656100_oceansspider464
A spider crab investigates monitoring equipment on the Pacific floor

"It's a region where we have naval operations," says US Navy
oceanographer Robert Winokur, referring to the area off Vancouver
monitored by the scientists from Neptune Canada.

Beneath the surface

  • Leonardo Da Vinci noted in 1490 that sounds carry long distances under water - whale songs can travel thousands of miles
  • Sound travels about five times faster in water than in air, and is generally faster at greater depths
  • Marine mammals depend on sound for communication because sight
and smell are less effective under water - scientists fear that shipping
noise harms whales, porpoises and dolphins

  • Fish also hear sounds within a limited frequency range, and produce sound with their swim bladders and teeth
Allowing everyone to listen to
that part of the ocean poses a threat to US national security, he says,
because someone - he won't say who - might use that information to work
out the type and location of US naval vessels.

To reduce that threat, the US and Canadian navies have struck
a deal with the scientists that effectively allows them to censor the
sound of naval operations.

"Rather than it being sent to the internet in real time, we
divert it to a naval facility where the data are screened, and then
returned as soon as possible to the University of Victoria," says
Winokur.

In other words, the sound is scrubbed to remove the noise of naval vessels.

Widening the net

The US Navy says it hopes to work out similar arrangements with other ocean monitoring projects elsewhere in the world.

But Cornell University ocean acoustics expert Christopher Clark doubts it will succeed.

"The strategy they're using with Neptune (the Vancouver project) is a dead end," he says.

Clark insists the US Navy doesn't own the ocean acoustic
environment and should accept that what was once military technology is
now in the hands of civilians.

A rattail fish swims past monitoring equipment in the Pacific

"The cat's out of the bag, the horses are out of the barn,
whatever the metaphor is, it's happening,"
he says.

The number of observatories on Michel Andre's website is
growing. The site currently links to listening networks only in the
northern hemisphere.

Soon 11 more will be added, connecting to microphones in the South Pacific, South Atlantic and the southern Indian Ocean.

That will open up an even larger swathe of the ocean deep to our ears.

How China is advancing its military reach

In recent months China's airforce and navy have rolled out new hardware

  • Military balance: US and the rest
As
the US shifts its focus to Asia, Alexander Neill, head of the Asia
Security Programme at the Royal United Services Institute, sets out the
Chinese military advances challenging the regional balance.

At the Pentagon recently, US President Barack Obama announced
deep cuts to the US military and set out a shift in attention towards
the Asia-Pacific region, in a thinly-veiled message to China.

Despite a narrative of peaceful intent, China's leaders have
struggled to reassure the US over the direction of the People's
Liberation Army (PLA). Both countries admit that their military
dialogue falls well behind other aspects of the relationship.

So the shift has brought renewed scrutiny of the PLA's latest capabilities against US dominance in the Pacific.

In recent years the PLA has demonstrated impressive new
capabilities at sea and in space, aimed at showcasing the success of its
modernisation effort.

The obvious message is to deliver a powerful warning if Taiwan were to declare formal independence.

But Pentagon planners are now concerned that the Taiwan
contingency has been eclipsed by China's broader maritime territorial
claims and demands for more international space to protect the arteries
feeding China's growth.

'Unrestricted warfare'

China is developing a range of capabilities linked to the
space and cyber domain in order to sidestep the overwhelming might of
the US military in the Pacific region. The PLA calls this fighting
"local wars under informationised conditions".

Aboriginal Stonehenge: Stargazing in ancient Australia - Page 3 _57925378_55661230
China took the first step towards a space station when it launched the Tiangong 1 module

China recognised almost two decades ago that in the mid-term
the PLA could be no match for US conventional forces. So it began
working on what was dubbed "unrestricted warfare" - combining multiple
methods to defeat a superior opponent.

At the same time party leaders launched adventurous civilian
acquisition projects in the high-tech domain to increase Chinese
competitiveness and to boost indigenous production capabilities.

The PLA has been running military projects mirroring these
civilian acquisition ventures. Sometimes involving dual-use
technologies, the military and civilian strands have often been
indistinguishable.

China's space programme is a case in point. The recent
successful docking manoeuvre between a Shenzhou module and the Tiangong
Space station is as much a triumph for the PLA as it is for China's
civilian space agency.

Space theatre

Should the US ever intervene in a cross-strait clash or
challenge China's maritime claims, Beijing would employ a pre-emptive
"sea denial" strategy alongside its conventional operations - preventing
US battle carrier groups operating in or near its claimed territorial
waters.

Its submarine-launched ballistic and cruise missiles are now a
lethal force. China's long-range nuclear weapons systems have also
undergone significant upgrades and its strategic rocket force, the
Second Artillery Corps, is very much the pride of the PLA.

One of the most pressing concerns for the US navy is the
threat posed by a "carrier killer" anti-ship missile with enhanced
targeting capabilities facilitated from space. China very recently
launched its own Beidou Positioning System, challenging the monopoly of
the US Global Positioning System (GPS).

Aboriginal Stonehenge: Stargazing in ancient Australia - Page 3 _53401537_china_missiles624x520

One of the PLA's most sensitive advances has been the secret
deployment and testing of advanced anti-satellite (ASAT) and Anti
Ballistic Missile (ABM) weapons systems.

Two years ago, China successfully intercepted one of its own
ballistic missiles as it streaked through space. This test coincided
with the Pentagon's sale of Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) Patriot
systems to Taiwan.

Some experts believe a Chinese ASAT campaign against a
careful selected group of US satellites could have catastrophic effect
on the US military.

This capability, combined with the potential for China to
develop its own Ballistic Missile Defence umbrella, suggests that the
space domain will be a new theatre for US-China rivalry.

Chinese ASAT capabilities are not exclusively reserved for
"kill vehicles", like the one which obliterated an ageing Chinese
weather satellite in 2007.

It is now believed that the successful 2007 "kill" was in
fact the third test in a series. Previous tests had demonstrated an
ability to manoeuvre in proximity to targeted satellites.

This would suggest that China has experimented with
techniques which could be used for "space mining", where mines or
mini-satellites armed with jamming technologies could be placed within
the orbits of an opponent's spacecraft.

Carrier group

In addition to its "sea denial" and space warfare strategies, China is also expanding its conventional capabilities.

The PLA Air Force in recent years has extended its ability
for offshore operations, enhancing an offensive capability. It is
planning an overhaul of its ageing fleet with the deployment of over
3,000 new aircraft.

Aboriginal Stonehenge: Stargazing in ancient Australia - Page 3 _53302132_varyagcredit
China first aircraft carrier began sea trials in 2011

For the most part China has relied on copying Russian fighter
technology. However, the roll-out of the Chengdu J-20 Stealth fighter
prototype raised eyebrows last year, carefully timed to coincide with a
visit by the US defence secretary.

There have been some very significant developments in the
deployment of Chinese submarines in recent years. Beijing possesses 10
Russian-built ultra-quiet Kilo class submarines possibly armed with
200km-range anti-ship cruise missiles.

Since 2006, when a Chinese submarine surfaced undetected
within torpedo range of the US aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, China's
submarine force has regularly marauded the US Navy and its allies in the
Pacific.

It is thought that China plans to build three aircraft
carrier battle groups, each armed with 40 fighters, up to eight
warships, three nuclear-powered attack submarines and a number of
support vessels. The PLA Navy's retrofitted Varyag carrier, currently
under sea-trials, will serve as a training platform.

Even if the aircraft carrier would likely be a prestige piece
and more directed at Chinese domestic pride, the prospect of a Chinese
aircraft carrier will certainly cause ripples for the broader East Asian
naval balance.

Uncertain factors

While much attention has been paid to the breakneck speed of
Chinese military modernisation over the last decade, the events of 9/11
and the subsequent campaigns in the Middle East and Afghanistan provided
a window of opportunity for China to accelerate development.

In some cases there may have been, quite literally, windfalls
for the PLA. There is speculation that China acquired undamaged
Tomohawk cruise missile components in the early stages of the
Afghanistan campaign a decade ago.

When US Special Forces failed to completely destroy one of
their stealth helicopters during Operation Geronimo, Pakistan's military
may have allowed PLA counterparts to inspect the tail rotor.

The PLA must be congratulating itself on the impressive array
of weaponry which has tilted the balance in the Taiwan Strait in its
favour.

China's new-found capabilities combined with the opaque
nature of its military modernisation create a formula for mistrust with
the US.

There are perhaps three factors for uncertainty. Firstly, the
Chinese military's confidence in its new equipment could lead to an
overestimation of its capability as an emerging great power.

Secondly, the Chinese leadership could underestimate its
ability to control an unexpected escalation of hostilities in the
Pacific.

Finally, the domestic political factor - the PLA's external
behaviour could become a reaction to internal nationalistic sentiment,
instability or faction fighting as Beijing prepares for the fifth
generation leadership handover this year.

Ever wondered what Antarctica would look like without all that ice?

Scientists have produced the most detailed map yet
of the White Continent's underbelly - its rock bed.

Called simply BEDMAP, this startling view of the landscape
beneath the ice incorporates decades of survey data acquired by planes,
satellites, ships and even people on dog-drawn sleds.

It is remarkable to think that less than 1% of this rock base
projects above the continent's frozen veil.

In the map at the top of this page, the highest elevations
are marked in red/black. The light blue colour shows the extent of the
continental shelf.

The lowest elevations are dark blue. You will note the deep
troughs within the interior of the continent that are far below today's
sea level.

Aboriginal Stonehenge: Stargazing in ancient Australia - Page 3 _57097800_bedmap
An animated view of Antarctica, revealing its great mountains and deepest depressions
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-15735625

The map is a fascinating perspective but it is more than just a
pretty picture - it represents critical knowledge in the quest to
understand how Antarctica might respond to a warming world.

Scientists are currently reporting significant changes at the
margins of the continent, with increasing volumes of ice now being lost
to the ocean, raising global sea levels. The type of information
contained in BEDMAP will help researchers forecast the pace of future
events.

"This is information that underpins the models we now use to
work out how the ice flows across the continent," explained Hamish
Pritchard from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS).

"The Antarctic ice sheet is constantly supplied by falling
snow, and the ice flows down to the coast where great bergs calve into
the ocean or it melts. It's a big, slow-speed hydrological cycle.

"To model that process requires knowledge of some complex ice
physics but also of the bed topography over which the ice is flowing -
and that's BEDMAP."

Dr Pritchard is presenting the new imagery on Monday to the
2011 American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, the world's largest
annual gathering of Earth and planetary scientists.

This is actually the second generation of the digital BEDMAP.
The first version, which was produced in 2001, incorporated 1.9 million
measurement points. For BEDMAP2, the sampling has been raised to more
than 27 million points on a grid spacing of 5km.

"It's like you've brought the whole thing now into sharp focus," Dr Pritchard told BBC News.

"In many areas, you can now see the troughs, valleys and
mountains as if you were looking at a part of the Earth we're much more
used to seeing, exposed to the air."

The source data comes from a range of international partners.
Dr Pritchard and BAS colleagues Peter Fretwell and David Vaughan have
merged it all into a single product.

Aboriginal Stonehenge: Stargazing in ancient Australia - Page 3 _56735454_bell1hr
Instrumented planes fly grids across the surface of the ice to survey what lies beneath

The project has benefited greatly from the large number of airborne radar surveys that have been flown in recent years.

Unlike rock, ice is transparent to radar. So by firing
microwave pulses through the overlying sheet and recording the return
echoes, scientists can plot both the depth of the rock bed and - by
definition - the thickness of the ice covering.

Instrumented planes, guided by GPS, will now fly back and forth across the ice in campaigns that can last weeks at a time.

Perhaps the most publicised of these recent efforts was the
multinational expedition in 2007/2008 to map the Gamburtsev mountains.

This range is the size of the European Alps with the tallest
peaks reaching 3,000m above sea-level - and yet they are still hidden
below more than a 1,000m of ice.

"It's fascinating to see the Gamburtsevs in the context of the other big mountains in Antarctica," said Dr Pritchard.

"They're similar in size to the likes of the Ellsworth and
the Transantarctic mountains, but of course they're completely buried.
It is just because the ice is so thick in the middle of the ice sheet
that they're not exposed."

It is clear from BEDMAP2 that there are still two big areas of the continent that need improved coverage.

One of these lies between the Gamburtsevs and the coast; the
other runs south of the Shackleton mountain range towards the South
Pole.

Look closely at the map on this page and you can see that the yellow colouring in these areas appears quite smudged.

It is very likely that proposals will soon be put to national
funding agencies to go and close these data gaps with airborne surveys.
