Residents in a Arkansas city got a bizarre New Year's surprise on Saturday when they woke up to find their neighborhood covered with thousands of dead birds that appeared to have fallen from the sky.

Dozens of lawns, streets and rooftops for more than a mile in Beebe, Ark., were covered with the corpses of red-winged black birds. An aerial survey showed that no other dead birds were found outside that area.

Dead fish cover 20-miles of Arkansas River

Arkansas Game & Fish is trying to figure out why 100,000 fish in Northwest Arkansas turned up dead.
They were found along a 20-mile stretch between the Ozark Dam and Highway 109 Bridge in Franklin County.



The 20-mile stretch along the Arkansas River where an estimated 100,000 drum fish were found washed ashore and floating looks much different now.

Keith Stephens with Game and Fish explains, "We got a call last week from a tug boat operator that found the fish out on the river along the bank, in the river channel and we immediately dispatched somebody to the area to take a look."

Investigators from local and state agencies took samples from the affected area.
Stephens says fish kills occur every year, but the magnitude of this one is unusual, and disease could be the cause.

Hundreds of dead blackbirds found near New Roads

LABARRE, La. - Around 500 dead blackbirds and starlings have been found in Pointe Coupee Parish, according to state wildlife officials.

The birds were spotted lying in roads and ditches near Labarre Elementary School.
The community is between Morganza and New Roads on Highway 10.

Scientists from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries have been sent out to collect samples, which will be sent for testing to the University of Georgia and National Wildlife Center in Wisconsin.



"It's not common, (but) we do see a few die-offs for various reasons," said LaCour.
"Yes, we need to look into it,

we need to be a little alarmed,

but it's not out of the scope of things to have a die-off."

LaCour said people who find such die-offs should not touch the animals,
and instead contact their regional wildlife office.

Pine Bluff Chemical Activity (abbreviated PBCA) is a U.S. Army agency that controlled the chemical weapon storage site located at Pine Bluff Arsenal in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
The U.S. Army stored approximately twelve percent of its original chemical weapons at the Pine Bluff Arsenal since 1942.

Pine Bluff Arsenal stored 90,409 M55 GB rockets, 19,608 M55 VX rockets, 9,378 M23 VX landmines and 3,703 mustard ton containers.
It was also the home for the Binary Chemical Weapons Facility.
The facility created the two toxic agents that would combine to form VX as well as built the bombs to deliver the nerve agent.
Construction of the facility began in the mid-1980s and was mothballed prior to completion in the early 1990s as part of the chemical weapons treaties.

The Pine Bluff Chemical Agent Disposal Facility was completed in 2002, and the Army began weapons disposal in March 2005.
