Mardi Gras launched the logo for
the 2012 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras today,
but has dropped "Gay and Lesbian" from the event.
The move has sparked vigorous debate without the LGBTI community,
however SGLMG claims that the move was intended the better reflect
the muti-faceted LGBTI community and thus coincides with
the symbol representing infinite love.
After 10 years of being known as New Mardi Gras,
the organisation has changed its name back
to the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras,
despite dropping the words "Gay and Lesbian" from the event.
(oh, so it's
ONLY, EVERYONE ELSE who HAS TO BOW to
the 'gay & lesbian' DEMANDS
SHOVED DOWN THE WORLD'S THROAT.
NOT, The FUCK THE WORLD OVER, LEFT.)
The name change is accompanied by the launch of a new season logo
which was developed with advertising agency Moon Communications Group.
Moon creative director Greg Logan told the Star that
the logo is a universal symbol that connects with everyone in a different way.
"It symbolizes all types of genders coming together and does not
discriminate. its symmetry indicates equality and people coming
together to celebrate love," he said.
This year Mardi Gras will feature guest appearances from RuPaul,
Jonathan Hellyer and Sneaky Sound System.

Nijmegen city council wants CDA member Hubert Bruls as its new mayor
and has rejected the selection committee's favourite, Labour MP Sharon Dijksma.
Bruls was an MP between 2002 and 2005 and then became mayor of Venlo.
Last week, it emerged the selection committee wanted Dijksma for the job -
a move which generated widespread protests from councillors and locals.
A poll by newspaper De Gelderlander showed
80% did not want Dijksma to get the job.
The MP, 40, did not have enough experience and no connections with the city, objectors said.
The cabinet has final say about the appointment, but usually follows the council line.

A majority of MPs back a total ban on the sale of hashish
because foreign crime gangs profit from importing the drug into the Netherlands,
the Telegraaf reports.
The ruling VVD is set to propose a ban to justice minister Ivo Opstelten,
and is supported by the Christian Democrats and the anti-Islam PVV, the paper says.
The VVD wants to stop the sale of hashish - compressed resin from the
marijuana plant - because it is mainly smuggled in from countries such
as Afghanistan and Morocco.

'It comes from countries where we do not want to be associated with
facilitating criminal organisations,' VVD parliamentarian Ard van der
Steur told the paper. 'It is ridiculous that customs officers do all
they can to prevent imports but once the drug is in the country, it can
be sold.'
Under Dutch drug laws, people may have up to five grammes of hashish
or marijuana for personal use. Soft drugs may be bought and sold in
licenced cannabis cafes known as coffee shops.

Meanwhile, figures used by the police to state 80% of the Dutch
home-grown marijuana production is exported to other countries are
exaggerated, according to television current affairs show KRO Reporter International.
The police claim some 500 tonnes of Dutch marijuana are exported
every year, with a street value of some €2.4bn. The figures come from a
2006 report.
However, the programme claims police believe total production to be
anywhere from 323 tonnes to 766 tonnes a year and that officials have no
clue about how much is actually exported.
In addition, the report states it is extremely unlikely
80% of Dutch marijuana production is exported
because so little is found in neighbouring countries, the programme said.

Baby 'abortion' argument is crossing the line

The argument put forward by ethicists about aborting babies outside the womb
clearly crosses the line, says Andrew Bolt. Herald Sun
I HAVE written about cases so shocking that whatever you think of abortion - for, against or agonised like me - I thought you'd agreed.
Yes, here a boundary was crossed.
This, at least, is too much like murder.
There was the 2000 case of the "abortion" of Jessica, a healthy 32-week-old foetus, after her deeply distressed mother threatened suicide if made to give birth.
The mother thought Jessica could be a dwarf, which meant bad luck.
But on "delivery" of the girl, killed in the womb, a nurse at Melbourne's Royal Women's recorded: "The baby doesn't look small."
I thought this would at least prompt restrictions on the abortion of healthy babies so close to birth.
I was wrong.
Later, I reported on Jessica Jane, aborted in Darwin after her mother decided she'd prefer her career.
Jessica Jane was expelled from the womb - alive.
She was placed in a stainless-steel dish by a horrified midwife and left in a room, where she cried until she died, alone, 80 minutes later.
I thought this might force us to consider how carelessly we said "foetus" when discussing late-term abortions, when we're actually talking about babies who, outside the womb, can cry - and take an hour to die.
Wrong again.
I was just as wrong to assume that publicising other cases - like the rescue of an aborted baby, still alive, from a bin at Sydney's Westmead hospital - might make us agree such deaths involve a profound wrong.
Yes, a mother has a right to her body, but surely these babies had a right to their lives.
But again no debate.
Or so I thought.
Now the Journal of Medical Ethics has published a paper by professional "ethicists" that confronts the very hypocrisy that troubled me - that we permit the killing of children in the womb who we'd rush to protect if outside it.
But here is how Alberto Giubilini of Monash University and Dr Francesca Minerva of Melbourne University say that hypocrisy should be overcome.

I HAVE written about cases so shocking that whatever you think of abortion - for, against or agonised like me - I thought you'd agreed.
Yes, here a boundary was crossed.
This, at least, is too much like murder.
There was the 2000 case of the "abortion" of Jessica, a healthy 32-week-old foetus, after her deeply distressed mother threatened suicide if made to give birth.
The mother thought Jessica could be a dwarf, which meant bad luck.
But on "delivery" of the girl, killed in the womb, a nurse at Melbourne's Royal Women's recorded: "The baby doesn't look small."
I thought this would at least prompt restrictions on the abortion of healthy babies so close to birth.
I was wrong.
Later, I reported on Jessica Jane, aborted in Darwin after her mother decided she'd prefer her career.
Jessica Jane was expelled from the womb - alive.
She was placed in a stainless-steel dish by a horrified midwife and left in a room, where she cried until she died, alone, 80 minutes later.
I thought this might force us to consider how carelessly we said "foetus" when discussing late-term abortions, when we're actually talking about babies who, outside the womb, can cry - and take an hour to die.
Wrong again.
I was just as wrong to assume that publicising other cases - like the rescue of an aborted baby, still alive, from a bin at Sydney's Westmead hospital - might make us agree such deaths involve a profound wrong.
Yes, a mother has a right to her body, but surely these babies had a right to their lives.
But again no debate.
Or so I thought.
Now the Journal of Medical Ethics has published a paper by professional "ethicists" that confronts the very hypocrisy that troubled me - that we permit the killing of children in the womb who we'd rush to protect if outside it.
But here is how Alberto Giubilini of Monash University and Dr Francesca Minerva of Melbourne University say that hypocrisy should be overcome.

Media bias – does it affect voting patterns?

I take it as such an obvious fact of life that one of the problems
we on our side of the fence have to deal with, and it is a very
long-standing problem, is the media bias that makes it very difficult to
put our perspective into the public domain without having to go through
the distorting lens of the mainstream media. In a posting
in which I noted that his wins in the lastest rounds of primaries were
being given no serious media coverage and certainly very little positive
coverage, something noticed by many others and not just me, I stated in
an off-handed sort of way that “the narrative, as in all instances, is
in the hands of the American media whose aim is to demoralise the
Republican side as much as possible.” But this then led to a comment by
one of my fellow contributors here at Catallaxy. Samuel J wrote in reply:

To be frank, I found this something of a surprise. I would think that
to have watched politics at all, certainly everywhere in the English
speaking world, there would be no question that to try to inject a
right-of-centre perspective is seriously difficult. And again, I am
hardly the only one to have made this point. So to clarify matters, I
wrote this response:

So his point, as I understand it, is that if we came to the
conclusion that the media have a left wing bias, then we would be forced
to enact some kind of legislation to prevent it, to rectify matters, to
straighten it out. Therefore, it seems, the best way to forestall
having to start regulating the media is to deny that it is biased at all.
Media bias to the left is shown in more studies than the one I quoted in Quadrant.
And there are compensating advantages to the right side since
politicians on the right know they are being watched like hawks so they
tend to be more careful, while those on the left tend to be slipshod
because they are called out less often. Overall, however, this bias
costs votes and support for those on the right. People are less well
informed and it is more difficult to get a message out. The natural
reflexes of the media is somewhere between Fabian and Marxist, with an
almost no-enemies-to-the-left approach. Public debate is stifled and
there is a general drift to the left in policy which is brought to an
end usually only because of the fantastic damage such policies do.
Mitt Romney is now ahead of Barack Obama in the polls 48%-43% only
because the evidence of the harm Obama has done has become so
overwhelming that even with all of the protections offered by the media,
the population in general has begun to understand for themselves that
things must change. But this will still likely be a very close election,
and if the media can cause Obama to be re-elected, they will do it. For
the life of me, I just do not see how this can be denied.
