THE Gillard Government this past week made the same deadly mistake. Twice.

The first was to cover up for backbencher Craig Thomson, whose
union-supplied credit card was used five times to pay for prostitutes.

The second was to sneer at the hundreds of people who drove their trucks
and vans to Canberra on Monday to protest against this Government.

These are the same mistakes because they both expose this Government's fatal flaw: its arrogance.

There is one sin that Australians will never forgive its politicians.

No government should dare to act as if it couldn't give a damn what voters say. It should never seem beyond our control.

Paul Keating was flogged in 1996 after treating the public with
disdain. John Howard was punished in 2007, in part for sneaking in
WorkChoices without having asked permission. And Prime Minister Julia
Gillard's already fatal mistake was to break her promise before the
election never to give us a carbon dioxide tax.

The poll figures since that betrayal should have warned her she now had to do everything
she could to reassure voters she was humble. Responsive.

But this past week? It's as if Ms Gillard and her ministers went out of their way
to rub battery acid into the wounds. Take their response to the Thomson
scandal.

Mr
Thomson, chairman of Parliament's economics committee, was before his
election in 2007 the national secretary of the Health Services Union.

Extraordinarily,
his union credit card was used to withdraw $100,000 over five years
from ATMs. It was also used to pay for prostitutes, and the vouchers for
at least two of those
payments were endorsed with his driver's licence number and a signature
that looks like his.

His mobile phone was also used to ring those escort agencies, in between calls to Labor and union powerbrokers.

One of the five payments to an escort agency was for $2475 - around five or
six times more than all the other payments - suggesting more than one
man was entertained. But who?

Mr
Thomson's sketchy reply to these facts is that someone else, he won't
say who, used his card, and presumably forged his signature, presented
his driver's licence and used
his phone.

If Mr Thomson is telling the truth, a forgery was committed and union funds stolen. If he's lying, a fraud was committed.

Now to the cover-up. NSW police at first refused to investigate what is a crime on any reading.

NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said he would be "happy" to
investigate, but needed a complaint from the Health Services Union.

Only yesterday did police change their mind - perhaps mindful of how a
refusal to investigate the powerful would look to the powerless.

But why hasn't the union complained to police about the misappropriation of its members' money?

That's a question to put to its president, Michael Williamson, who was also
Labor's national president last year. But the union refuses to answer.

Then there are questions for the NSW Labor Party. Why did it this year give
Mr Thomson between $90,000 and $150,000 of its own members' money?

Is it because Labor does not want Mr Thomson to go bankrupt from having
dropped the expensive defamation action he launched against the
newspaper that first reported these allegations?

That seems likely, given bankrupts can't sit in Parliament, and if Mr Thomson quit,
Labor would almost certainly lose the by-election, and government with it.

But could that huge gift from Labor also be an inducement for Mr Thomson to not dob in anyone else?

Who knows? NSW Labor won't explain its payment, and Prime Minister Julia
Gillard says it's not her business to answer such questions either.

The Government on Monday meanwhile blocked Opposition moves to have Mr
Thomson explain himself to Parliament, which all suggests a government
out of control - and especially out of the control of voters.

Here's a government that won't apply to its own members the standards of
morality most Australians would want upheld by all citizens.

Here's a government that won't apply to itself the accountability we'd expect of all public officials and politicians.

Here's a government whose drive for power seems to excuse any low deed. What other deals has it quietly done?

All that voters have seen in response to the Thomson scandal is the Prime
Minister, a Labor leader and feminist, saying day after day that she has
"full confidence" in a politician whose credit card was used to rip off union members
and pay for prostitutes.

That just treats the public with contempt. Instead of answers, you are getting the two fingers.

This scandal alone would make this another terrible week for this flailing
Government. But then the Convoy of No Confidence roared into Canberra,
and Labor jumped at another chance to show how arrogant it is.

Normally, having 300 or more trucks and vans drive from as far away as Darwin to
protest in Canberra would be seen as a sign of a government in strife.

And, normally, Monday's protesters would be the kind of people Labor would
be proud to call its own - truck drivers, pensioners, battlers trying to making a go of their own business.

But
the sneering and smearing of these protesters has been astonishing. The
Canberra journalists who've been a party to it should be ashamed, but
worse is that Labor
joined in.

Fine, it was entitled to
quietly encourage the media to see the protest as a flop, and the
protesters as cranks. That's what any whatever-it-takes government
operative would do.

But Labor's sin was to also belittle the protesters publicly, as Infrastructure
Minister Anthony Albanese did in Question Time on Monday.

Knowing that many of the protesters were watching him from the public galleries,
Mr Albanese first painted them as kooks: "The Convoy of No Consequence
where a couple of hundred people gathered with no support from the
mainstream organisations: the people who believe in one world government
. . ."
(Memo to Mr Albanese: the person who most believes in One
World Government is actually Greens leader Bob Brown, your own partner
in Government, who in June called for a "a global people's assembly
based on one person, one vote, one value". How about mocking him?)

Worse, Mr Albanese then taunted the protesters as too weak to bother Labor:
"The convoy of no consequence outside! The convoy of no consequence!"

By now the furious protesters were booing and shouting at Mr Albanese from
the galleries. If you wanted a symbol of Labor's arrogance, here it was.

True, the protesters numbered only 1000. But the polls show
they speak for millions, and every one of those millions who on
television or radio on Monday heard Mr Albanese ridicule the protesters,
heard him ridicule them, too.

More, they heard him say Labor didn't care what they said or wanted.

No wonder thousands of motorists in Sydney that afternoon switched on their headlights in sympathy with the truckies.

Labor had told them it was beyond their control.

Well, come election time, I think Labor will get a savage reminder of who
really is in charge in this democracy, and what happens to politicians
who treat them with such reckless contempt.

UPDATE 4.31pm: JULIA Gillard today said it was "unremarkable" that
her chief of staff "checked a fact" over the Craig Thomson brothel
scandal.

The Prime Minister also accused Opposition Leader Tony Abbott of
trying to "bully authorities" over the issue and said he was motivated
by being upset he did not win the last election.
The Herald Sun
revealed today the Julia Gillard's chief of staff personally rang the
industrial registrar in early 2009 - before fraud allegations were made
public - to ask if he was investigating Labor MP Craig Thomson.
Former
industrial registrar Doug Williams last night confirmed he told Ben
Hubbard he was legally unable to provide any information about
investigations.

Victoria Police are investigating the incident, with the shovel
believed to have been placed at her front door in the early hours of
Friday morning.
The allegations raise questions about when Ms
Gillard - who was deputy prime minister and workplace relations minister
at the time - first learned about claims that Mr Thomson had stolen
Health Service Union funds to pay for prostitutes.
Ms Gillard
rejected suggestions the call by her chief of staff Ben Hubbard proved
she knew about the allegations involving Mr Thomson and covered it up.
She said both her and Mr Hubbard did not remember the call because it was unremarkable.
"A COS checking a fact with a public servant is completely unremarkable."
She said the allegations had been published in 2009 by the Sydney Morning Herald.
Ms Gillard said her COS was checking facts but Mr Abbott and his team were trying to interfere.
Ms
Gillard and Attorney-General Robert McClelland were yesterday scathing
of shadow attorney-general Senator George Brandis, who revealed he
phoned NSW Police Minister Mike Gallacher before sending evidence about
Mr Thomson to NSW police commissioner Andrew Scipione.
Mr Abbott today demanded Ms Gillard detail what she knew about the Thomson affair and when she knew it.
"I
think she owes it to the public to tell us exactly what she knew, when
she knew it and what she did about it," Mr Abbott told the Nine Network.
"No
doubt if she has a reasonable explanation the public will give her
credit for that, but she needs to give us her explanation."
It
comes after Mr Abbott yesterday attacked the Prime Minister for not
asking Mr Thomson to make a statement to parliament on the issue.
Ms Gillard said addressing parliament was a matter for Mr Thomson.
Cabinet
minister Tony Burke said there was nothing sinister in the staff member
making inquiries, and described the story as ridiculous.
"Lots of
rumours go around Canberra, most of them are untrue, so a staff member
rings up a public servant and says we've heard there's an investigation
is this true, public servant says can't tell you. And that's the end of
the matter," Mr Burke told the Seven Network.
Mr Thomson will probably face a police investigation into claims he skimmed more than $150,000 from union accounts.

The Herald Sun
can also reveal the HSU failed to pay $300,000 in ACTU fees while Mr
Thomson was alleged to have been defrauding his credit card.
Mr
Williams, who retired as industrial registrar in December 2009, said he
took the phone call from Mr Hubbard "concerning inquiries I had
initiated into the Health Services Union".
"I observed that
because of my independent statutory position as industrial registrar I
was not in a position to provide any information," he said.
The allegations Mr Thomson used union funds to pay for prostitutes and other personal items were first published in April 2009.

Mr
Williams is believed to have begun inquiries into the HSU's Victorian
branch in 2008 before widening the probe to the National Office.
A
spokesman for the Prime Minister said: "There is regular communication
between ministerial chiefs of staff and senior public servants to
confirm facts. Mr Hubbard has no specific recall of the conversation."
An ACTU spokesman confirmed the HSU has now paid back its debts.

UPDATE 4.31pm: JULIA Gillard today said it was "unremarkable" that
her chief of staff "checked a fact" over the Craig Thomson brothel
scandal.

The Prime Minister also accused Opposition Leader Tony Abbott of
trying to "bully authorities" over the issue and said he was motivated
by being upset he did not win the last election.

The Herald Sun revealed today the Julia Gillard's chief of staff personally rang the
industrial registrar in early 2009 - before fraud allegations were made
public - to ask if he was investigating Labor MP Craig Thomson.

Former industrial registrar Doug Williams last night confirmed he told Ben
Hubbard he was legally unable to provide any information about
investigations.
