Just how ecologically damaging those "all-natural" T-shirts are has been laid bare, thanks to a feature article in the latest issue of Miller-McCune magazine.

Chris Wood takes a close look at a study conducted by the International Institute for Sustainable Development in Winnipeg, Canada, that drew from an international network of experts to look at the cotton T-shirt manufacturing process.

As you may have expected, environmental problems caused by the common cotton T-shirt range widely, from irrigation-based farming practices that strain water supplies and damage ecosystems, to overuse of chemical fertilizers, to water pollution from dye wastes:

"Only about 10 percent of dye wastes are recycled, and about a third of the rest flows directly to the environment.

In provinces like Xinjiang, this waste is a major contributor to industrial and municipal pollution so severe that nearly 1 in 4 of China's 1.3 billion people drink contaminated water every day."

Reconstructing Haiti: Time to break with foreign interference

Such talk of sweatshops might seem more than a little garish the morning after such a disaster, but this was hardly the first time Haiti had been targeted for such ‘sweatshop development’ and foreign players are obviously eager to turn the exponential increase in the bitterness of Haitian existence into profitable lemonade.

Haitian workers were “closely supervised and controlled by the government”, which kept “wage rates at very low levels” – “undoubtedly… the single most important factor influencing the location of assembly industries in Haiti”, according to economist Monique Garrity.
Even the World Bank admitted the “assembly industry is largely outside the Haitian economy” and made “no fiscal contribution.”

During this experiment in sweatshop development between the 1970s and 1980s, absolute poverty in Haiti is estimated to have increased 60 per cent – from 50 to 80 per cent of the population.

While sweatshop development had profited foreign corporations and further impoverished Haitians, those that had allied themselves with foreign investors to exploit Haitian labor rose to new heights.

In 1990, USAID described these “rapacious” new elites who’d “arisen to seize hold of the economy”:

These entrepreneurs have a 19th century approach to making money and have moved in to take advantage of the country’s massive and cheap labor pool.
They run sweatshops, pay starvation wages and oppose any effort to improve the lot of the average impoverished Haitian.

The maquiladora sector had been 50-70 per cent organized.
After the coup, the factories fired all the union-affiliated workers.
Now companies pay whatever they want.
It’s impossible to even talk about [improving] wages or working conditions.

…Following the September 1991 coup, peasant organizers were hunted down like animals by the military.

Within months of the coup, US corporations with business interests in Haiti asked for and received exemptions from the embargo designed to bring down the military junta controlling Haiti.
On 4 February 1992, President Bush I exempted American companies assembling goods in, or sourcing production in Haiti from the embargo.
The US Treasury Department even handed out these licenses to companies controlled by well-known coup organizers.

When the National Labor Committee asked one factory owner why he could not pay his workers enough to survive, he explained that, when the embargo was lifted, many US companies let it be known that they would continue contracting assembly work in Haiti only if their costs were lowered.

His factory was paying its Haitian workers 27 cents an hour, a starvation wage.

Other factories paid as little as nine.
“There was a union before the coup,” the same factory owner said, “but afterwards the repression was too great.
The military was hunting them.
They were afraid and fled Port-au-Prince. Now, we have no union.”

Not only had sweatshop development pushed Haiti’s poor majority further into poverty, but it also gave birth to vicious and rapacious new elite that oversaw the murder of thousands of members of Haiti’s pro-democracy movement in the years after the 1991 coup.

Gildan saves on labor - the average pay is 2-3 dollars a day in Haiti.
Labor laws in pale in comparison to those in Canada.
At the moment, Gildan is really only a Canadian company in name only.

Haiti is a special case, in regards to Gildan and international trade. Gildan is supposed to be a "vertically integrated company" and I'm sure you're aware of that term.
Thing is, in Haiti, the vast majority of the employees are subcontracted through criminals like Andy Apaid.
They are not Gildan's employees.
In fact, Gildan really only has about 44 employees there who are there to "monitor" the subcontracted employees.
When Gildan says they will take care of their employees they are referring to the 44 individuals, not the thousands of sweatshop employees.

Gildan can help Haiti, I agree - they can help by opening GILDAN factories instead of subcontracting and pay their employees FAIR wages instead the starvation wages they have allowed their subcontracted employees to be paid in the past.
They can also offer some benefits and put themselves at the FOREFRONT of progress in Haiti instead of taking advantage of the poorest people in the western hemisphere.

Less profit? Fine.

They made a BILLION dollars last year but they can't pay people more than 5-10 dollars A DAY?

Gildan should reorganize their priorities and include their employees, subcontracted or not, at the top of the list. I agree with you too in that Gildan could help some Haitians more than any charitable donation, but they would have to stop participating in the exploitation of the Haitian people and move towards empowering them through jobs with fair wages and benefits.

In May the minimum wage was raised to just under 5.00 a day.
In a twelve hour day that equals about 43 cents per day.)

Gildan should be congratulated for giving Haitians far inadequate pay - not even enough to cover their very BASIC NEEDS?
Gildan made over ONE BILLION dollars profit selling clothing last year.
The Haitians that broke their backs in sub-par conditions MAKING those clothes, they made no profit.
Never mind profit - they didn't even make enough to feed and care for their families.

Gildan CAN easily afford to pay Haitians the basic wage they need to live - they CHOOSE not to because they want to keep more money for themselves.

Very big difference there, the people high-up in Gildan have MORE than enough money of their own.

Actually it's like this.

If more people decided they wanted their T-Shirts to be printed on fairtrade or organic cotton then that is what would be stocked by the printing businesses.
But they don't, they want the cheapest quote.
In this case it is up to David to decide what garment he wants his logo to be printed on, there are plenty of ethical/organic/fairtrade companies that supply T-Shirts to these businesses but it is up to the customer to decide, usually the decision comes down to the price.
I can't speak for David, but I can speak for the company that prints his T-Shirts, it's in North London.
It's called Fifth Column and it's been there since 1977 [It must be Dutch Nazi's working with the Illuminati through Gildan to propagate banal messages printed on T-Shirts to keep the masses stupified and driven by fashion].

No, in fact David is supporting the livelihoods of people like me, I work there and actually helped print those and can tell you that
a lot of designs are printed on fairtrade T-Shirts from a variety of different suppliers.

His logo could be done on any of them.

As I mentioned before, Gildan is stocked by companies like Fifth Column because the average Joe picks that as it's the cheapest (I think they are organic but I can't seem to view the Gildan website at the moment to confirm that).
If customers were not allowed this option there would be far less competition in the business and many more people would not necessarily be able to afford to buy stylized shirts on these materials.
Saying that I'm not blase about the conditions a lot of these people are working in, places like Haiti and Honduras etc.
and this is a major issue.
I am fortunate that I work under better conditions and attempting to better those less fortunate is something that drives decision making in our business.

How ironic then, that it is printed on Gildan shirts.
I will definitely be more dilligent with my research of companies before using their products in future and will consider switching to a different company next time if these ones sell.

President Obama’s 2012 presidential campaign today started selling “Made in the USA” t-shirts featuring images of both President Obama and the long-form birth certificate he released copies of last month.

“Wear your support for this campaign with an official Made in the USA T-shirt,” his website advertises.
Donate $25 or more today and we'll send you your limited-edition shirt.

Coffee-mugs are also available.

“Remember ‘fight the smears’ from the 2008 campaign?” asked campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt.
“This is the mobile version of it.”

“Fight the Smears” was an Obama campaign website from 2008 that attempted to refute untruths about the campaign, such as the claim that then-Sen. Obama was a Muslim.

Part of the reason for the shirts, a campaign official told ABC News, is that despite the president’s release last month of his long-form birth certificate, conservative fact-challenged author Jerome Corsi’s book “Where's the Birth Certificate?: The Case that Barack Obama is not Eligible to be President” was published this week.

A Gallup poll released last week indicate that 65% of those polled say the president “definitely” or “probably” was born in the U.S. Thirteen percent of Americans say the president “definitely” or “probably” was born in another country.
Twenty percent say they don’t know enough to form an opinion. These numbers are trending towards the correct belief that the president was born in the U.S.

Selling products featuring the long-form birth certificate might be a risk for the campaign, given how seriously the president and many of his top aides have objected to the birther lie, some suggesting that it is in no small part a racist way to make the president seem “other.” Merchandise featuring the birth certificate could be seen as trivializing those concerns, or even crassly exploiting them to raise campaign cash.

The birther lie thrived despite the certificate of live-birth candidate Obama posted on his website in 2008, contemporaneous newspaper accounts in the Hawaiian newspapers the Advertiser and Star Bulletin or fact-checking by Politifact and Factcheck.org.

Last month President Obama released his long-form birth certificate, after then-potential Republican candidate Donald Trump began questioning yet again if President Obama was born in the United States and polls indicated an increasing number of Americans were starting to question where the president was born.

In April President Obama decried the “sideshows and carnival barkers” when finally releasing his long-form copy of his birth certificate. Some White House advisers told the president not to dignify the sideshows and carnival barkers, but White House aides say two weeks ago President Obama was dismayed when in the midst of his squaring off against House Republicans over budget priorities many in the media chose instead to focus on the false charges Trump leveled about the president’s birth certificate.

In April of 2011 when Mr. Obama appeased the “birther” critics by releasing the long-form birth certificate polls indicated that more and more Americans were believing the untruth.
Only 33% of Republicans said that the president was born in the U.S., with 45% sure he was born outside the U.S., and 22 percent unsure where he was born, a recent New York Times/CBS News poll from earlier this month reported.
Nineteen percent of Democrats said the president was born outside the U.S. or weren’t sure where he was born. Forty-eight percent of independents were either sure he was born outside the U.S. or weren’t clear either way.

“We do not have time for this kind of silliness,” President Obama said in late April when releasing his birth certificate hoping to put this issue today bed. “We’ve got better stuff to do.”
