THE Beckham show is coming to town.
Soccer superstar David Beckham
will visit Melbourne for the first time
in a summer showdown between his
US team LA Galaxy and Melbourne Victory
at Etihad Stadium.

The Baillieu Government will announce the sporting coup today,
setting up a mouth-watering showdown between Beckham -
the most famous soccer player in the world - and Harry Kewell -
one of Australia's best players.

Organisers of the December 6 blockbuster
also hope that Beckham's famous wife - former Spice Girl Victoria -
will fly into town for the event.

A capacity crowd of 56,000 is expected to pack
Etihad Stadium
for the friendly match, which Premier Ted Baillieu
described as
"another jewel in Victoria's outstanding major events calendar".

With Sydney trying to steal Melbourne's crown
as the
sporting and major events capital of Australia,
Mr Baillieu said
Victoria had again flexed its muscle
and proving to be one of the
world's truly great sporting cities.

"Melbourne is recognised globally
as a hub for its world-leading
major events and Victorians love to celebrate,
participate in and attend
major sport events," he said.

Beckham, 36, has twice toured
Australia with the Galaxy,
playing in Newcastle last year and against
Sydney FC in the Harbour City in 2007.

It will be the former Manchester United and
Real Madrid midfielder's first visit to Victoria.

The cost to taxpayers of Beckham's visit is being kept under wraps,
with the Government claiming the deal is "commercial-in-confidence".

But a Government spokesman described the fee as
"a modest level of support to ensure that the match is played in Victoria".
