Earthquakes... Earthquake

Earthquakes across Asia Pacific cause two disasters in under 24 hours

Samoa

119 confirmed victims of tsunami up to 35ft high that tore through the South Pacific islands of Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga leaving communities in ruins.

The giant wave was caused by a tremor with a magnitude of 8.3, that struck about 120 miles from American Samoa, a US territory, at 5.48pm GMT on Tuesday.

Sumatra

In Indonesia, at least 450 are confirmed dead and thousands more missing or trapped in rubble after two earthquakes that hit less than 24 hours later. Officials have said the death toll on the island of Sumatra will "definitely" rise.

The first Indonesia earthquake, magnitude 7.6, struck at 10.16am GMT on Wednesday, some 55 miles under the sea north-west of the city of Padang. It was followed by a second tremor, magnitude 6.8, that hit at 1.52am GMT today about 150 miles further south-east.

Earthquakes weaken distant faults

The major 2004 earthquake in Sumatra may have weakened the San Andreas fault, 8,000km away in California.

This is according to scientists who took measurements from the fault over two decades.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8283873.stm

California Earthquake Predicted “Over Next Few Days”?

The CEPEC believes that there is a 1% to 5% chance of a large earthquake (magnitude 7.0 or greater) on the San Andreas Fault over the next few days.

The California Emergency Management Agency (Cal EMA) issued a warning to operational Red Cross areas throughout the state yesterday after a 4.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred three miles south of Bombay Beach, Imperial County at 4:55 am.
Although there were no damages or injuries reported as a result of this event, The U.S. Geological Survey has been tracking an “unusual sequence” of over 50 aftershocks, that have been clustered about 1 to 3 kilometers southwest of a projected extension of the San Andreas Fault, in the Salton Sea area.

4.8 quake rattles Salton Sea area.

No damage is reported, but seismologists are watching the area closely because a large jolt on the San Andreas fault could set off a major earthquake.

March 25, 2009

Another moderate earthquake struck Tuesday near the San Andreas fault in Imperial County, seismologists said.

The magnitude 4.8 quake hit at 4:55 a.m. two miles south of Bombay Beach on the eastern shore of the Salton Sea, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website.

Earthquakes... Faultb

The quake occurred at a depth of 3.5 miles.

"The only interesting thing about this one is that it occurred at the end of the San Andreas fault," said Kate Hutton, a seismologist at Caltech.
"Bombay Beach is considered the southern end of the San Andreas fault. The last swarm of earthquakes similar to this was in 2001.
We're watching it closely.
We'll be analyzing everything."

There have been at least 23 aftershocks, the largest a 3.1, which struck at 6:52 a.m. in the same area, Hutton said. No damage was reported in the thinly populated area.

Over the weekend, the Salton Sea was struck by 42 smaller quakes during a 48-hour period beginning Saturday morning and tapering off early Monday.

Scientist have been keeping a close watch on the region because they believe an earthquake there could set off fault movements leading to a major earthquake that would devastate Los Angeles.

A Big One on the southern San Andreas fault will be the result of a lurch along a swath of a fault. A long swath. What seismologists call the earthquake rupture will extend 10 to 15 miles deep and 200 to 250 miles long.

Earthquakes themselves are the creation of the Angry Earth's inner core, and LA, Japan and some other places are huge places which are completely in the danger zone.
Maybe this is the sign that 2012 could be in motion.

I Remember Watching A Documentary On The Tsunami,
And An Old Woman Said It Was Because The Gods Of The Ocean Had Been Angered...!!!

The Tsunami, and Trusting the Timeless Angels

We search not only for the meaning of life, but the purpose of our individual and collective experience as we have created it - and we look earnestly for ways in which we might recreate ourselves anew as a human species.
The hour has come for us to demonstrate at the highest level our most extraordinary thought about Who We Really Are.

The Dalai Lama

Earthquakes... Gaiaback

We have all witnessed the shattering of so many lives in the tsunami.
Before this event, terrorism was a daily story presented as clusters of events of seemingly never-ending destruction.
In Iraq, the land that was once the seat of civilization, people are attempting to live without painful remnants of the genocide of old regimes, a painful war and the immediate entanglements of terrorists and insurgents. There, simply living and being are disrupted daily.
Images of their painful struggles continue to be placed before our eyes.

All these images, and the ones showing the effects of the tsunami, illustrate the genuine desire we all have to just live peacefully among our fellow human beings.
As videos and photos of these events are repeatedly brought to our minds, our religious and spiritual beliefs clatter and vibrate.
We stutter as we attempt to express our thoughts and words in understanding these intense events that rattle our consciousness -- particularly when we have fixed illusions about our very human condition.
As deeply as earthquakes undulate through the surface around the earth's core, we are further shaken when the image of a tsunami's overpowering waves of motion flood our minds and bodies with so much emotion.

All of our comfortable sets of coping routines and habitual activities, which we thought were secure, are shaken.
Just as the tsunami shifted and altered landmasses, the core of our human consciousness has been twisted. Our attention has been profoundly redirected -- both inwardly and outwardly.
Now, with the sunrise that begins each day, we must begin our reflection anew of who we think we are -- personally and collectively.
All the dislocations and change, some suddenly apparent and others more subtle, illuminate our minds and teach us viscerally how alive our planet is as it nudges our human species to evolve.

We are called upon to pause from thoughts and words.
We may fumble for words and then return to quiet reflection and let it be; that is all that is required in these moments.
Following such intense reshaping of the earth and ourselves, we silently observe our personal evolution.
We again witness our valuing of one another, and in our many flickers of light and courage we realize again that the living earth hosts us.

Some people and many animals were attentive and attuned before the tsunami arrived.
Many of us have been moving too quickly, without reflecting on our actions and our deepest feelings.
At some level of consciousness, we all move mindlessly at times as we consume Mother Earth's life-sustaining resources.
Perhaps tsunami waves, moving at 500 miles per hour, are required to mirror to us what we ourselves have been doing -- and catch our attention.
Have we forgotten to attend to the deepest feelings that surround our inner core?
Can we learn from all this that the gyrations in the waters and waves of our emotional being require conscious attention so we do not end up needlessly hurting one another?

Through all this, Gaia (Earth) nudges the consciousness that we share with her.
She is keeping us alive generously and courageously -- and with forgiveness.
She is one in her being with our human species.
Unfortunately, our species often has neglected to fully connect with her.
Like the earthquakes reverberating the earth's core, courage, generosity and forgiveness from inside our core now are called to pour out.
These virtues may touch wherever the tsunami waves have swept away human beings and plant and animal life.
We are all made of the same stuff; we're all part of Creation, all part of Mother Earth.
Her virtues remain constant over time.
At unexpected times, they sometimes flood us with waves and gyrations of intense emotion, awakening us to the understanding that we do not realize what we do to her -- or to one another.

Not Quiet My Thoughts,

Which Involves A Co-Operative,
Rather Than A Competive Evolutionary Approach...!!!

Obama Has Already Issued A Statement...!!!

Thing Must Be Catastrophic There...!!!

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - The most powerful earthquake ever recorded in the Caribbean hit the impoverished country of Haiti on Tuesday, collapsing a hospital and other buildings and sending people into the streets screaming for help.

An Associated Press videographer saw a wrecked hospital in Petionville, a suburb near the capital, and a U.S. government official reported seeing houses that had tumbled into a ravine. U.S. officials in Haiti reported that all land telephones and cell phones were down in Port-au-Prince.

‘The sky is gray with dust’
“Everybody is just totally, totally freaked out and shaken,” said Henry Bahn, a visiting official with the U.S. Agriculture Department. “The sky is just gray with dust.

Obama says thoughts, prayers to Haiti

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama said his thoughts and prayers were with the people of Haiti, where a strong earthquake hit on Tuesday, and that the U.S. stood ready to help the island nation.

White House officials said Obama also had asked aides to make sure U.S. personnel at the embassy in Port-au-Prince were safe.
There are fewer than 20 U.S. military personnel in Haiti, largely working with the embassy there.

Officials also said Obama told them to start preparing in case humanitarian assistance was needed.

The State Department, the U.S. Agency for International Development and U.S. Southern Command have started to coordinate.

"There are emergency meetings going on right now," State Department spokesman Gordon Duguid said.
"We need to gather what information we can quickly. We will of course assist in any way we can."

Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Western Hemisphere subcommittee, said,
"This is the worst possible time for a natural disaster in Haiti, a country which is still recovering from the devastating storms of just over a year ago."

Engel urged the administration "to do everything possible to help" the Haitian people recover.

Quake a "Catastrophe of Major Proportions"
Haiti's Ambassador to the United States Speaks with Katie Couric about the Major Earthquake that Hit Near Port-au-Prince

Earthquakes... Haitiambassador
Raymond Alcide Joseph, Haiti's ambassador to the United States

CBS News anchor Katie Couric spoke with Raymond Alcide Joseph, Haiti's ambassador to the United States about a magnitude 7 earthquake that hit 10 miles west of the capital of Port-au-Prince - perhaps the strongest earthquake ever to hit the region.

Couric: What are you hearing about what has happened in Haiti from residents there?

Joseph: I was able to reach the secretary general to the presidency Mr. Fritz Longchamp, the only official I was able to contact.
And he told me he was driving his car east from Port-au-Prince to a suburb east of the capital and buildings started to collapse on both sides of the streets so he had to park his car and start walking.
And it was just at that instant that I found him. He said it is a "catastrophe of major proportions."
That's his own words.
And he told me he was not able to reach any official, not the president nor anyone.
And he was walking to his place not knowing what was awaiting him, not knowing whether he could cross the bridge to get to his place.
So, you know, it's hard reading.

Couric:
Mr. Ambassador, we've been hearing reports that a hospital collapsed, that people are crying out under that collapsed structure. Have you heard anything along those lines?

Joseph: I spoke with somebody from World Vision while I was on the air on CNN and he was saying there was wailing, crying all over, dust rising up all over the place.
So he also said that's all we can say because nobody can count the dead yesterday.
But he said it's going to be a real catastrophe.

Couric: President Obama, Mr. Ambassador, issued a statement and said "my thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by this earthquake, we're closely monitoring the situation and we stand ready to assist the people of Haiti."
What kind of help and support might you need from the United States and other nations?

Joseph:
You know, in the past, the United States came to our help. In 2008 we had four hurricanes that hit in a matter of three weeks and the United States had dispatched the U.S.S.
"Comfort" to Haitian waters. Hospital beds aboard the "Comfort." And the southern command which is the U.S. military in Florida came to Haiti's support.
Now I suppose the same thing can be done.
I'm quite sure we will need everything.
Somebody has just called me and talked to one of my colleagues to say they found out that the White House in Haiti, which you call the palace, is damaged.
Also, the equivalent of the tax office, you know, I.R.S., is damaged.
And there are some shantytowns around Port-au-Prince, around the hills, they have collapsed like cards.

Couric: Well, U.S. Ambassador Raymond Alcide Joseph, thank you for talking with us and updating us on this terrible situation in your country. We so appreciate it.

Joseph: Thank you very much for your concern and your help and please tell the world Haiti needs them right now.

Haiti president describes `unimaginable' catastrophe after earthquake

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti --
Haitian President René Préval issued an urgent appeal for his earthquake-shattered nation Wednesday, saying he had been stepping over dead bodies and hearing the cries of those trapped under the rubble of the national Parliament

The president, in his first interview since the earthquake, said the country was destroyed and he believed there were thousands of people dead but was reluctant to provide a number.

"We have to do an evaluation," Préval said, describing the scene as "unimaginable."

"Parliament has collapsed. The tax office has collapsed. Schools have collapsed.
Hospitals have collapsed," he said. "There are a lot of schools that have a lot of dead people in them."
Among those trapped inside the Parliament building but still alive was the president of the Haitian Senate, Kely Bastien.

Préval said he had traveled through several neighborhoods and seen the damage.
"All of the hospitals are packed with people. It is a catastrophe," he said.

According to media reports, survivors were digging through the rubble and stacking bodies along the streets of Port-au-Prince,

Tracy Reines, Director of Response Operations for the American Red Cross, discusses the latest for the disaster response to Haiti as of 11 PM EST on Tuesday night.

We are not accepting volunteers to travel to Haiti. If you would like to volunteer for the American Red Cross, please contact your local chapter. For inquiries about relatives living and who have citizenship in Haiti, please be patient and call repeatedly until the lines clear or contact other family members who live nearby. Telephone, Internet and other communication lines are often disrupted in times of disaster. People trying to locate U.S. citizens living or traveling in Haiti should contact the U.S. Department of State, Office of Overseas Citizens Services, at 1-888-407-4747 or 202-647-5225.

Haiti earthquake:
Bodies piled up on the streets as disaster leaves 'thousands' dead

Bloodstained bodies are piled high in the streets of the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince today amid fears that thousands have died in a catastrophic earthquake.

Rescuers have been forced to dig through rubble with their bare hands to free trapped survivors as the Red Cross said up to three million people may have been affected.

British and international aid agencies are rushing to assist today as the full horror of the disaster began to emerge.
