The Dambusters dog N****r will be renamed Digger
for a modern remake of the iconic film to avoid offending
American viewers, it has emerged.

Script writer Stephen Fry, 53, has confirmed that
pilot Guy Gibson's faithful black Labrador
will be renamed for the forthcoming Peter Jackson movie.

In the original 1955 film
Gibson's dog's name was spoken 12 times
as a code word to report successful dam breaches
to RAF Bomber Command.

have the meaning that it does now - you just can't go back, which is
unfortunate.

'You can go to RAF Scampton
and see the dog's grave and there he is with his name,
and it's an important part of the film.
'The name of the dog was a code word to show that
the dam had been successfully breached.

The iconic 1955 film tells the story of British Second World War scientists
who developed a bouncing bomb as a means of attacking Germany's dams.
During the film a special squadron of Lancaster bombers, 617 Squadron,
is formed and trained by Wing Commander Guy Gibson.

His black Labrador dog Nigger is present throughout the film
and his name repeatedly used as a code word to report
successful breaches of dams.
But when Peter Jackson began planning a remake of the historic film,
which has been scripted by Fry, the team agreed to rename him Digger.

Nigger died in a car accident
on the morning of the
Dambusters raid on 16 May 1943
and is buried at the squadron's home
of RAF Scampton, Lincs.
The move has attracted criticism from historians and aviation enthusiasts
who have revealed they are 'unhappy' with the alteration.
Mervyn Hallam, curator of RAF Scampton museum,
today slammed the change and accused Fry of trying to 'rewrite history'.

He said: 'It's not a problem with coloured people
it's the people in power creating the problem.

that they are trying to rewrite history. His grave is still here
with his name on it.
'What they are trying to do is dishonouring N*gger
and dishonouring the brave men who flew that mission.

'We have over 9,000 visitors a year at RAF Scampton
and many of them are not native to England
but none of them are offended.

'N*gger is the name of the dog and that shouldn't be interfered with.
In the context of the time and the film it's not a racist name.'

Jim Shortland, a historian who specialises in the Dambusters, added:
'I'm unhappy with the change because it's sacrificing historical accuracy
for political correctness, in particular for the American market.
'If someone was offended by Guy Gibson's name you wouldn't go around
calling him Richard Todd.
'One wonders what else the film might get wrong.
Once you know something is incorrect, you're going to be suspicious.'
But Phil Bonner, spokesman for Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire,
admitted the name of the dog is 'very emotive'.
He said: 'The name of the dog is very emotive for many people
and in some respects it's a reflection of the changes that have happened
across the generations.
'The whole core of the film is about the bravery of the people who flew
from Lincolnshire on a very daring raid and it's important that this aspect
of the film is not watered down.'

KEVIN Rudd this week turned from an irritant
into a deadly threat to Prime Minister Julia Gillard.


Rumours of two screaming matches this week between Gillard

and her foreign minister have been denied by Rudd.


But what couldn't be denied were photographs of the two

walking in Parliament House together this week after a rare meeting

in apparent anger and mutual loathing.


A festering sore has been opened since a front-page story

in the Canberra Times this week alleged Rudd was plotting a takeover.


In a way, that's hardly news.

Rudd clearly dreams of snatching back his job
from the woman who took it from him a year ago.


He does not rate Gillard on brains or learning. He will also have seen

what a dog's breakfast she has made of the job since she took over,

driving down Labor's support in Newspoll from 52 per cent of

the two-party preferred vote to a humiliating 45 per cent.



He'll also have noted a sense of panic now within Labor.


Only this panic can explain the preposterous announcement by
Climate Change Minister Greg Combet that the Government would
spend $12 million of taxpayers' money to sell its carbon dioxide tax,
even though there is no tax in place to sell.


That is not just unprincipled and against Government guidelines.
It is also almost suicidal, drawing a furious rebuke from the two
independents propping up the Government, Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor.


No wonder former Labor powerbroker Graham Richardson this week admitted
voters had stopped listening to Gillard and

"I doubt that Labor can win the next election now".

But Labor's tragedy is that it has no obvious alternative to Gillard,

which leaves Rudd, now rated in polls as the people's choice

to run the party that doesn't want him.


Rudd has frantically wooed that vote,


but the other half of his effort

has been to not lift a finger to save Gillard.


He has done virtually nothing as foreign minister to rescue her

from her two worst foreign policy crises --

the ban on the live cattle trade with Indonesia

and the failure to clinch the deal with Malaysia

to swap our boat people for refugees.

Where is Kevin? Why has he not flown to Malaysia? Rushed to Indonesia?
That's what makes this week's tense meetings with Gillard intriguing.

According to Rudd, the subject was Indonesia, and the cattle exports --

which should have been his focus for two weeks.


It's true, the loathing for Rudd is too strong for Labor MPs

to go back yet to the man who nearly ruined them last time.


Labor number crunchers told the Sydney Morning Herald on Friday

that Rudd could rely on just 11 of the 115 votes in caucus.


But the point is, they're now counting. And Gillard is on death watch.

MYTH - Pigdogs are used to kill pigs.

This is not only untrue it is totally unacceptable behavior for a
pigdog. Pigdogs are used to locate and hold a pig in place for the
hunter to dispatch it, regardless if a bailing or holding dog. All due
care must be taken to minimize the chance of suffering to a captured
animal. A correctly trained holding dog will hold the pig by the ear or
cheek causing little if any damage to the captured boar.

MYTH – Pigdogs kill native wildlife and stock.

A correctly trained pigdog will ignore all other game when hunting in
the field. No hunting dog should be taken into the field until they are
both Stock and Native Wildlife proof. No hunter wants this type of
behavior in their pigdogs as you would quickly become unwelcome both in
the hunting community and by Landowners.


MYTH – Pigdogs are human and dog aggressive.

This behavior is both totally unacceptable in the hunting community and
society in general. Any pigdog that shows excessive aggression to
humans, other dogs or any other animal is immediately removed from a
hunting pack. This dog will not be reintroduced back into the pack
unless this behavior can be corrected and is removed from
any breeding program. It is however totally acceptable for your dog to
bark when visitors arrive or something startles them, especially at
night, this is perfectly normal behavior and acceptable for all dogs in
society.

remember you and your dog are representing the hunting community, be
safe, be responsible, follow the laws and regulations for your area and

Police powerless to act
over violent pig attacks
A 13-year-old boy was attacked by a pig
at a holiday park in Devon, suffering a bite on his arm.
Jordan Stock, from Pontypridd, south Wales,
suffered the injury at Cofton Holiday Park at Teignbridge.

Jordandid not require treatment for the injuries, but he is bruised.
Park owner Chris Jefferey said it was the latest in a series of attack
on people by pigs roaming in the area.


Devon and Cornwall Police officers said
they were not investigating,
as there was no criminal legislation
covering attacks by pigs.

Police confirmed the attack on 16 April.
A spokesman said:
"The only legislation that applies
to attacks on humans by animals
is the Dangerous Dogs Act
and that does not apply to pigs."
