Growing numbers of Europeans are fleeing the euro crisis for a new life in Australia.

In the wake of the global financial downturn and with the euro debt crisis still unfolding, many from Greece, Italy and Ireland are quitting their homeland and heading Down Under.

Figures from the Australian department of immigration show that it is the Irish who are especially keen to move south.

From 2009 to 2010, 1,280 Irish citizens were granted temporary
working visas. The following year it rose to 2,250 but in the last six
months alone the figure is already up to 3,100.

Australia has avoided the global financial crisis because of its huge
natural resources like coal and iron ore. Developing economies like
China are massive customers.

It is the strong economy that persuaded the Corbett family to move from their home in Cork to Sydney last May.

Valentina Grande: Life is good in Australia

Rory and Mary Corbett, along with their two young children, had
enjoyed a holiday to Australia and knew it was somewhere they could
happily live.

As skilled workers they have been sponsored by their new employers.

Mrs Corbett said: "Even though my husband had a job, I had a job, it
was getting to the stage where there was more money going out than there
was coming in.

"And with all the austerity cuts that were happening as well,

In Australia on a working holiday visa, she told Sky News: "In Italy
there isn't work, there isn't money, but here you can find, very easily,
a job and get good money and good tips."

Last year just one of the restaurant's employees was from Italy - now
there are eight. Every week more Italians come through the doors
looking for a job.

They are mainly young, single and desperate for a positive start to
their working lives in a place they know they will be well paid.

"Life is good here," Ms Grande said, "I get paid weekly. In Italy I
was paid monthly so if the restaurant didn't make money, you could work
for a few weeks and find you don't get paid at the end. Life there is
stressful."

Professor Stephen Castles from Sydney University is an expert in global migration.

He believes the influx of workers to Australia is welcome, especially
in sectors where recruitment is difficult, but creates worries for the
countries they are leaving.

"It is a huge loss," he said: "They are losing the people they will
need when the economy recovers, if the economy recovers, and there may
be global competition to attract those skills. Those counties might try
and attract their citizens back."

Even in Australia the outlook is not completely sunny. Australia
exports to Europe and the US, making it vulnerable to any serious drop
in Chinese and Indian demand for its minerals.

But for now it is seen by many refugees of the euro crisis as a place of opportunity and optimism.

You can say a lot of things about Standard & Poor's, but the one thing you cannot question is their sense of timing.

Last month, they could have chosen almost any day to warn that they
were placing the entire eurozone on watch for a possible downgrade; but
they elected to make the announcement just hours after Nicolas Sarkozy
and Angela Merkel used an emergency summit to promise to safeguard the
euro.

And
now they have chosen Friday the 13th to confirm that the majority of
those 15 nations put on negative watch have now been downgraded.

And, as if to twist the knife, it also emerged on Friday that talks
between Athens and private sector investors aimed at voluntarily
reducing the total amount of Greek debt had fallen through.

Investors may ignore the credit ratings

And, to top it all off, clearing house LCH Clearnet raised its margin
requirement for those using it to buy Italian debt from 8.15% to 8.3%.

It is not just the date that is ironic. Against all expectations, the
eurozone had been looking tentatively more healthy in the past few
weeks.

The past seven days have seen successful debt auctions by two of the most troubled euro members - Spain and Italy.

The European Central Bank's emergency lending operations seemed to have calmed nerves significantly.

Now, it looks quite conceivable that eurozone policymakers will spend
the rest of the month firefighting the next round in the single
currency's crisis until they gather at the end of January for their
latest Brussels summit.

I understand that senior European financial officials were deep in a
key Brussels set of negotiations when they learnt - on their
blackberries - about the impending downgrades, and had to scramble to
come up with a strategy for downplaying the news.

Although it clearly has more of the wow factor, there is good reason
to suspect that the S&P downgrade (which includes France, Austria
and Italy, but not Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and Luxembourg,
which get to keep their AAA) will not be a hammer blow for the euro.

As I wrote when S&P
first announced that they were putting the euro area on creditwatch
negative, there are growing signs that investors are choosing to ignore
official credit ratings.

A downgrade could affect Mr Sarkozy's presidential campaign

To put it another way, the fact that France will be AA rather than
AAA is unlikely to change investors' minds when it comes to buying (or
selling) French debt.

Nonetheless, a French downgrade (and for that matter a downgrade of
other major euro members) will trigger a downgrade of the EFSF - the
continent-wide rescue fund which was supposed to bolster the currency.

Moreover, it represents a serious political blow for Nicolas Sarkozy as he fights for re-election this year.

Italy suffers a downgrade of two notches, as do Portugal and Spain,
implying that S&P is particularly worried about their capacity to
withstand the crisis.

And when you read the statement accompanying the decisions,
the explanation of why the downgrades have happened is damning, saying:
"Policy initiatives taken by European policymakers in recent weeks may
be insufficient to fully address ongoing systemic stresses in the
eurozone".

It's equally intriguing to examine the countries which were spared a downgrade.

Germany hangs onto its AAA crown, and has its outlook put back on a
stable footing - implying it is nowhere near being downgraded.

Berlin might reasonably ask why it was lumped in with the rest of the
currency zone when its circumstances (which haven't really changed over
the past month) don't merit it.

Thanks to its part as the poster boy of austerity, Ireland keeps its
rating unchanged, but, at BBB+ it was close to junk status as it was.

Finland, which historically has one of the world's best debt-payment
records, almost alone in not having defaulted in any way during or after
WWII, retains its AAA rating, but is put on "outlook negative", which
means it still has the sword of damocles hanging over it.

And as of Friday evening there were three euro members which are junk
bond issuers, which in technical terms means they have ratings of below
BBB and in normal-person terms means their debt is regarded as highly
at risk of default. Greece (CC) is joined in that club by Portugal (BB)
and Cyprus (BB+) - home to many UK nationals.

But it may well be the breakdown of the Greek talks that prove the more serious of today's stories.

If, as the statement from the Institute for International Finance
suggests, it will be impossible for the investors and the Greeks to
reduce the country's debt voluntarily, it means the country will have to
go through a messy default.

That implies a wave of stress spreading through the financial system -
precisely the eventuality European policymakers were trying desperately
to avoid through these negotiations.

Over the course of Friday, the cost of borrowing for the affected
euro members rose sharply, although it dropped for Germany, as well as
the UK - both of which will be among the few AAA countries remaining.

Either way, both of these pieces of news are deeply worrying for the single currency - and bring forward its moment of truth.

Can its leaders unite and create a proper political and fiscal union,
or does this mean the beginning of the end for the world's biggest ever
economic project?

The State Government has taken another step in recovering property belonging to
alleged Queensland Health fraudster Joel Barlow.

The Director of Public Prosecutions this morning sought orders from a
Supreme Court Judge to restrain property including luxury cars,
expensive household items and property held by Barlow's sister.

The 36-year-old former bureaucrat is in custody after being charged with
stealing $11 million from his employer last year.

The orders made today mean Barlow cannot deal with the property in any way
while the allegations against him are before the courts.

In the wake of the alleged fraud, the Government intends to split Queensland Health
into two organisations to improve services.

The union representing the state's health workers
will go to the Industrial Relations Commission to try to ensure that
members get a fair say on the restructure of Queensland Health.

The plan to break up Queensland Health into smaller agencies comes after
the alleged embezzlement of more than $16 million and major payroll
problems.

Together secretary Alex Scott says it is not right to rush the process before the state election.

He says it is appalling that staff have only been given two days next week to comment on the break-up.

"We're hopeful that early next week the industrial commission will agree with us and
suggest that the Government needs to take a slower process and give all Queenslanders
as well as all Queensland Health workers a real opportunity to consider these matters
rather than having a rushed restructure forced through before a state election is called
and then potentially having another restructure occur just after a state election occurs,"
he said.

Mr Scott says workers are being treated as pawns by politicians.

A CONVICTED pedophile and a man ordered to pay damages
for software piracy are on Queensland Health's payroll.

The Courier-Mail newspaper reports the pedophile, convicted in 1994,
works in Queensland Health's mental health section.

An IT manager who was ordered by the Federal Court in 2001 to pay damages
of $210,000 was employed by Queensland Health in 2006 and two years later
was promoted.

Police Minister Neil Roberts said people with criminal convictions should be forgiven
at some stage and allowed to move on.

"Certainly they need to be held accountable for that," he told ABC Radio.

"But we also want people to get back on the straight and narrow
and lead productive lives in the community.

"We have to draw a line in the sand at some point.

"That's why under current legislation, after a period of time,
people are able to not declare certain offences.

"Some need to be declared, but this is the system we have and I think it works well

Yet more evidence that many “discrimination” laws are becoming a racket, exploiting the fact that the process is the punishment:

new anti-discrimination laws on a key pillar of the Fair Work Act that

potential for a major extension of what is deemed to be discrimination,
and that this could move ahead of generally accepted community
standards…

The Australian Industry Group warns that the Fair Work Act has “made it
far too easy for employees to pursue speculative claims aimed at
achieving a monetary settlement during conciliation”.

The Business Council of Australia warns that the laws are “being used to
undermine internal grievance and performance management processes, and
are having a deleterious effect on the communication between supervisors
and employees”.

Brown now denies what he once said: that Gillard broke her word

Was Bob Brown deceiving us then about the deceiving Julia Gillard, or his he deceiving us now?

On January 11, Greens leader Brown accused the Prime Minister of
breaking her “absolute commitment” to a forestry deal he had earlier
described as ”shameful”:

<blockquote>

BOB BROWN: Those areas have not been protected. The logging has
continued. In fact when I spoke to the Prime Minister about this in
December, despite her absolute commitment to an immediate end to all logging to these high conservation value forests many
months earlier, over 10 square kilometres of these forests had been
flattened by Forestry Tasmania, largely for the giant marauding
Malaysian company Ta Ann.

STEPHEN DZIEDZIC: Logging is happening in less than 1 per cent, though,
of the 430,000 hectares that are protected in order to fulfil existing
contracts. Are you refusing to compromise here?

BOB BROWN: No I’m wanting the Prime Minister to keep her word.
... And the commitment was, under section 27 of the agreement the Prime
Minister and Premier Giddings signed, that if there was a need to
fulfil contracts to find wood in these areas, then the Commonwealth
would compensate.

The Prime Minister and the Premier signed off on it but then they stood
limply aside while Forestry Tasmania, in the service of this Malaysian
corporation Ta Ann, has simply continued to destroy these magnificent
parts of Australia’s World Her- what should be World Heritage.
</blockquote>

On January 13, he repeated his allegation that Gillard had broken her word:

<blockquote>Many Australians will feel very aggrieved - not just that there is a breach of honour involved here by the Premier and the Prime Minister - but at the destruction of these great, wild forests.
</blockquote>

On January 16 he made clear he was talking about a promise made by Gillard, and broken by her:

<blockquote>On Friday, Forestry Tasmania, the extremist loggers
outfit which has trashed the Gillard commitment, stated that these
coupes (logging areas) represent less than half of one per cent of the
total area identified for interim protection… Today, the prime minister is using the same statistic to justify her own renege on the promise.
</blockquote>

But forget all that.

Now Bob Brown wants to rescue the drowning Gillard by accusing people who criticise her of being “sexist”. And last night he denied Gillard had broken her word on the forestry deal:

minority situation. She had the gumption to do it and the wherewithal to
do it and she stuck by her work with the Greens in delivering. And as
Tony Windsor said ...

BOB BROWN: That wasn’t in that agreement with me. That’s an agreement she made with the Tasmanian Premier and ...

EMMA ALBERICI: Which she has betrayed?

BOB BROWN: No, which has been betrayed by Forestry Tasmania,
which is a Rambo organisation out of control where the Premier of
Tasmania Lara Giddings needs to bring them back into control.

Brown now absolving Gillard after earlier damning her suggests to me
that his attacks on her credibility over logging were insincere, and
little more than a ploy to manufacture some dispute between the Greens
and Labor, to the political advantage of both.

But now that Brown may lose his meal ticket in the pliant PM, he tries
to erase from our memory his own charge that she breaks her promise.

Is Bob Brown sexist by defending Gillard like this?

makes one of the silliest interventions yet in Labor’s leadership
battle in a desperate bid to preserve his meal ticket:

sexist? To criticise her for her lethal bungling of boat people
policy, the crippling of live cattle exports, the fire--starting of mini
race riots, the mass rorting of the school hall program, her attacks on
the free press and free speech and so much more is proof of the
critics’ “sexism”? By the way, did Brown ever call for John Howard to be
given “a bit of a break” from the far more furious criticism he was
given by the media? Why not? Is Brown perhaps sexist?

Brown continues:

<blockquote>“I just think the degree of relentless criticism on
this Prime Minister coming from male commentators, it’s probably all
subconscious, but is sexist and quite ridiculous at times.”
</blockquote>

I’m puzzled. When some of those male commentators praised Gillard, were they sexist then? Or are we only sexist now that we’re criticising her for the deceit and incompetence since? And when female commentators criticise Gillard in exactly the same terms as we men, why doesn’t Brown call them sexist, too? Or is Brown perhaps sexist?

On he goes:

<blockquote>He said voters believed Ms Gillard had
handled herself well in difficult circumstances. “People are incredibly
impressed with her ability to deal with what is chucked at her, and so
am I,” he said.
</blockquote>

“Incredibly impressed”? In fact, the latest Newspoll has satisfaction
with Gillard falling from 36 per cent before Christmas to 33 per cent,
with dissatisfaction with her steady on 55 per cent. Is Brown perhaps a
fantasist as well as sexist?

This bit will stun you:

<blockquote>Senator Brown criticised independent MP Andrew
Wilkie, saying the House of Representatives crossbencher had been
“naïve” to make the passage of poker machine reforms a condition of his
support for Labor, which he had now rescinded.

“We didn’t ask for commitments, for example, to ensure that a parliament
pass an issue in a period of minority government,” he said.

“I think that was going a step too far. How can you ask a minority government to ensure that a parliament passes anything?”
</blockquote>

What, like a carbon dioxide tax? Here’s Brown signing the infamous
leadership deal with Gillard that ensured her the Greens support, and
had her disastrously breaking her election promise not to impose the tax
that only the Greens demanded:

Albrecht: Who is an Aborigine?

Paul Albrecht AM in his new book asks an interesting question on which I make no comment:

When I began my ministry in central Australia in the late 1950s, only
people of full Aboriginal descent were categorised as Aborigines. At the
same time, they were declared to be wards of the state so that special
assistance could be provided…

On the other hand, people whose ancestry included a person or persons of
Aboriginal ancestry and another race, for example, Caucasian, Chinese,
Afghan, were not classed as Aborigines, and therefore not wards of the
state. They were Australian citizens who could vote, own property, drink
in a pub, buy alcohol, etc. At that time, many of these people of mixed
Aboriginal/Caucasian or Chinese or Afghan descent took umbrage if they
were referred to as Aborigines.

Later, when a change of government policy provided benefits to
Aborigines not available to other Australians, but without the
restrictions which previously had applied to Aboriginal people, many of
these same people chose to identify as Aborigines…

The powers of the Commonwealth to make laws on behalf of Aborigines, and
provide special funds for Aborigines in areas of health, housing,
education, economic development, etc., meant there was also the need for
an Australia-wide definition of who was an Aborigine. In the event, the
Commonwealth adopted the following definition, based on race:

<blockquote>

An Aborigine is a person descended from the original inhabitants of this
land, who chooses to identify as an Aborigine, and who is accepted as
such by his/her group…</blockquote>
The current definition makes it clear who is an Aborigine, for legal
purposes, and therefore eligible for the special assistance provided by
governments for Aborigines only… However, the definition says nothing
about Aboriginal culture, or the cultural differences between the more
traditional Aborigines and those who have lost much, if not all, of
their culture… (This) has helped to father a number of negative
consequences. For example:

<blockquote>It has helped create monochromatic policies and programmes. While some
of these have been appropriate and helpful to Aborigines who have lost
their culture, they have been unhelpful to, in fact they have often been
harmful to, the more traditional Aborigines…

It has helped to gloss over the fact that there are fundamental cultural
differences between Aborigines whose attitudes, lifestyles, and values
have been fundamentally shaped by their traditional culture, and those
who have lost their traditional language and culture, and whose
attitudes, lifestyles and values have been shaped, either by their
experience of living among other Australians as Australians, or by their
experience of living on the fringes of Australian society, and not
being accepted by Australians.

It has helped gloss over the fact that while both the more traditional
and some non-traditional Aborigines have needs, these needs differ
greatly…

It has helped to silence the voice of the more traditional Aborigines.
In traditional Aboriginal societies, only designated leaders could speak
on behalf of their group, and these leaders always represented only
themselves… Yet the government chose to ignore this cultural fact ... .
Rather, a small group of Aborigines, who by and large had no knowledge
of traditional Aboriginal culture and didn’t speak an Aboriginal
language, but who had learnt to manipulate the system established by
Parliament, succeeded in influencing policy and effectively setting the
whole agenda for Australian and Aboriginal relations.
</blockquote>

I believe it can be shown both empirically and statistically, that the
Aborigines who have benefited most from current Government programmes
are the Aborigines who have lost their traditional culture, and whose
values and lifestyle approximate those of other Australians.
