Huge numbers of feral camels run wild in outback Australia.

TURMOIL in the Middle East has claimed a victim Down Under -- with the development of a camel abattoir coming to a halt.

The planned plant is to be built at Port Pirie, South Australia,
and would process about 70,000 feral camels from central Australia every
year and export the meat to the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

An estimated 1.5 million feral camels roam central Australia, breeding at such a rate the population doubles every nine years.

The plant would also process up to 720,000 goats and sheep annually.

However, the
Egyptian owner, Magdy El Ashram, faces difficulties financing the
$20 million project due to Egyptian Central Bank regulations blocking financial transfers over $100,000.

The restrictions have been in place since February's revolution
, which resulted in the downfall of president Hosni Mubarak.

It is expected they will be lifted following new presidential and
government elections,
now slated for March next year after a series of delays.

El Ashram has two years to begin construction under council approval guidelines.

The South Australian state government has strongly backed the abattoir plan
as it will help tackle the feral camel problem and deliver slaughtering
jobs to Port Pirie and mustering work for remote indigenous communities.
