THREE children have been airlifted to hospital in Melbourne after a
car plunged down an embankment and slammed into tree in western
Victoria.

All three children, aged four, nine and eleven, were seriously injured.

Police believe the car, driven by a 38-year-old woman, was travelling east on
Glenelg Highway when it veered off the road just after 5pm (AEDT) today.

The driver, from Hamilton, was also expected to be airlifted to a hospital in Melbourne.

Meanwhile, a 97-year-old woman died in a head-on smash on Monbulk Rd
in the Dandenong Ranges around 4pm (EADT) today.

Two helicopters flew six people from the two cars to four different
hospitals, including an 11 year-old boy to the Royal Children's Hospital
and a two-year-girl to Maroondah Hospital.

The state's road toll now stands at 221, 18 fewer than at the same time last year.
