0241: Police have said that rival gangs are now starting fights at King’s College Hospital after two gang members were admitted with minor wounds.

0239: Solid line of riot police still sealing off Coldharbour Lane/Atlantic Road crossroads in Brixton.

Policing operation across London

Police are tonight responding to copycat criminal activity across London and are deploying officers to tackle it.

There has been looting in a number of boroughs in north, east and south London by small and mobile groups.
Groups of youths continue to attack police officers and a number of police vehicles have been damaged.

Three officers have been taken to hospital after being hit by a fast moving vehicle at approx 00:45hrs.
The officers were in the process of making arrests in Chingford Mount, Waltham Forest, in connection with youths looting a shop.
Two officers are believed to have superficial injuries and the other has an injury to his knee.

Earlier tonight in Walthamstow Central more than 30 youths, many in masks, vandalised and looted a number shops including BHS. Officers attended the area and the situation is currently under control.
Groups of youths are continuing to target shops in Waltham Forest and officers are on scene.

In Brixton there has been disorder and looting.
LFB are dealing with a fire at Footlocker on Brixton High Road.

Rival gangs attended Kings College Hospital after two victims of minor stabbings were admitted resulting in a fight.
The hospital has brought in additional security for the remainder of the night and officers remain on scene dealing with the initial stabbings.

In Enfield Town Centre and surrounding areas the disorder has been contained.
Resources are in the area and the High Street remains cordoned off to contain the disorder.

Approximately 50 youths congregated in Oxford Circus and caused some damage to property.
Officers attended the area and the situation is currently under control.

In Islington there were reports of a group causing a disturbance and a police vehicle windscreen was smashed.

A Tesco store in Ponders End was vandalised and items were stolen.

As a result of quick and decisive action by police numerous arrests have been made at various locations.
We await further details.

Commander Christine Jones, said: "This is a challenging situation with small pockets of violence, looting and disorder breaking out on a number of boroughs.

"We have deployed units across London and continue to move quickly to deal with any reports of criminality as soon as possible.

"Officers are once again putting themselves in harm's way to arrest those responsible and prevent further crimes.
I am proud of their dedication and bravery.

"I, along with the vast majority of Londoners, condemn this mindless criminality. It serves no purpose and only results in the destruction people's livelihoods and communities."

ROTHSCHILD has appointed former New South Wales Liberal Premier Nick
Greiner as chairman of its council of advisers at its Australian
business and a senior adviser globally.

The investment bank today said Mr Greiner, who was Premier and
Treasurer of NSW from 1988 to1992, would take up the roles effective
today.
Trevor Rowe, the executive chairman of Rothschild
Australia, said Mr Greiner’s public service and corporate board
experience would be of great value in providing insights to its clients.

Mr Greiner chairs a range of businesses and bodies, including Bradken,
Citigroup Australia and Infrastructure NSW. He is also deputy chairman
of CHAMP Private Equity.
Rothschild Australia recently advised SunRice on the failed takeover of
the group by Ebro Foods, Asahi on its bid for the whole of P&N Beverages,

Asahi to pay $1.2b for Independent Liquor

JAPANESE beverage giant Asahi Group
reportedly has trumped rival Suntory
in the race to buy Independent Liquor.

Asahi will pay about $1.21 billion to buy the company, which is
headquartered in New Zealand, from private equity companies Pacific
Equity Partners and Unitas as it moves to expand in Asia and Oceania.

Asahi has been touted as a potential rival bidder for Melbourne-based
Foster's Group, which is the target of an informal $9.5 billion takeover
offer from Anglo-African beverage giant SABMiller. Asahi will announce
its biggest acquisition soon, Nikkei newspaper reported yesterday.

Japanese firms have sought to expand in foreign markets as domestic sales suffer
from slow consumption by the country's shrinking and ageing population.

Asahi already has a foothold in the Australian soft drinks market through its
Schweppes brand and last month agreed to buy P&N Beverages Australia.

CHINA'S voracious appetite for Australian resources
is likely to continue despite the latest bout of
global economic volatility,
economists and business leaders say.

Rio Tinto chief Tom Albanese said yesterday while the debt crisis
engulfing major western economies had implications for the entire world,
China's economy would continue to grow rapidly.

And RMIT economics professor On Kit Tam said China's foreign investment program
meant there would be little impact on the Asian giant's demand for resources.

"I don't think this decline in the US rating
will have any immediate effect via China on to Australia," Prof Tam said.

"China is shielded by its foreign investment and capital controls."
China's news agency Xinhua said yesterday unless the US cut its
"gigantic military expenditure and bloated welfare costs", another ratings
downgrade would be inevitable.

But Prof Tam said China had little option but to retain its $1.2 trillion holding
of US bonds as debt-ridden Europe did not provide a reliable alternative investment.

China is now buying a quarter of Australia's exports, while the US takes just 4 per cent.

Prof Tam said despite China's efforts to rein in its high inflation rate,
which clocked in at 6.4 per cent annualised in June, the economy would
still growth about 9 per cent this year.

Mr Albanese said based on his travels through China and knowledge of the economy,
he was convinced growth would not slip below 8 per cent next year.
He told the ABC's Inside Business program yesterday
the engine room of the Chinese economy was changing.
"It's shifting a bit from commercial and higher-end residential (property
construction) to probably what would be a more middle-class residential,
which we would see as a healthy sign," Mr Albanese said.
"What I see (is) that growth continues."

16,000 cops to
reclaim the streets
Cameron vows to restore order



DAVID Cameron today vowed to put 16,000 police on London's streets after coming back to Britain to take charge of the riot crisis engulfing the country.

The Prime Minister condemned the "sickening" violence unleashed on communities as he promised to reclaim the streets.

He also announced that Parliament will be recalled on Thursday to discuss the crisis, that all Met officers' leave had been cancelled and that the number of police on London's streets of London will be nearly trebled to 16,000.

He then chaired an emergency Cobra meeting at 9am.
It came as police struggled to restore calm to shaken communities.

ENGLAND'S soccer friendly against the Netherlands was cancelled after a third day of rioting in London, officials confirmed.

A one-line statement from the Football Association confirmed the
news which followed a meeting between FA officials and police early on
Tuesday concerning security arrangements for Wednesday's match at
Wembley.

"It is with regret that tomorrow's international fixture
with Holland at Wembley (Wednesday 10 August) has been called-off," an
FA statement said, adding that more details would follow later.

The unprecedented decision followed the earlier postponement of League Cup
matches involving West Ham, Charlton and Crystal Palace after police
advice.

England's players were to take part in a training session on Tuesday before returning to their clubs, reports said.

England star Rio Ferdinand responded to the announcement on micro-blogging site Twitter.

"England vs Holland game is off, good call. Who wants to see a game of football
when our country is in turmoil," Ferdinand wrote.

"The solution to this is not to just clean up the glass, it's to stop the glass
breaking in the first place," Ferdinand added in a separate post.

The Manchester United defender had earlier called for an end to the violence which has raged across Britain.

"The scenes on Sky news right now are shocking...what is this all in aid of??
Innocent peoples homes and livelihoods have gone up in smoke-why?"
Ferdinand said.

"It seems these kids/people have no fear or respect for the police....maybe the army will get that respect??

"And I am not saying bring violence, I am saying the presence of the army
may make these kids/people think twice about continuing this??"

Teammate Wayne Rooney added: "These riots are nuts why would people do this to
there (sic) own country. Own city. This is embarrassing for our country.
Stop please."

British Olympic officials, meanwhile, expressed confidence that London would be
able to host a trouble-free Summer Games next year despite the violence.

"We know the level of work and we know the level of planning that has gone into it,"
British Olympic Association director of communications Darryl Seibel told Sky Sports
News.

"This is not a reflection of London. This is a reflection of the world we live in today."

Police in Birmingham said violence which erupted in the city on Monday would
not impact on the third Test between England and India, due to get under
way at Edgbaston on Wednesday.

England star Kevin Pietersen described the violence in the city as "insane",
revealing that the team's city centre hotel doors had been locked as unrest flared
throughout Birmingham.

"They have just locked our hotel in Birmingham mate... Riots just started here.. Insane!!" Pietersen said in a Twitter message.

England bowler Tim Bresnan added: "Just seen the rioters in Birmingham fleeing
down the main street followed by a load of police in the full get up.
What's going on?"

Spinner Graeme Swann chimed in a message late on Monday:
"Goodnight England.
Good luck to those surrounded by the carnage. Be safe."
