The Koala (from 'Hoalus' , the Greek verb 'To unexpectedly have both your arms ripped off' )is a small notanythinglikeabear-like animal which lives in most parts of Australia, as well as some other parts of the Universe and traces in china. They can also be found in Koalawalla land. the small weiner of the thousands of koalas spend their lives sitting at the tops of tall trees in bushland sleeping or taking drugs. But most koalas are incredibly aggressive and will attack any unfortunate person who happens to get in their way.

During the first World War the ANZAC troops at Galipoli used a single Koala in a attempt to subdue the Turks. Unfortunately for the brave ANZAC's the Koala turned on them, causing a great many casualties. The British command shat themselves and ran away screaming into the sea. It was only after the brave efforts of both the combined ANZAC, and Turkish forces that the mighty animal was stunned that the Turkish forces where in fact turkeys and not fish as he had been informed little over two minutes before he ran past the Koala. Then everyone else buggered off and decided it wasn't worth fighting over.

Koalas have been known to hide in the tops of trees in bushland, then jump down when they see hikers passing by, landing on top of them and ripping their brains out.The Koala lies on its tummy while eating so it won't get drunk from eucalyptus juice and so it won't fall out of it's tree and get dead.

A few months later, the same koalas used the two shotguns to rob a bank in the city of Perth in Western Australia, near where the koalas had killed the hikers. They stole about $100 million Australian dollars. The koalas escaped before police arrived and were never found again.

Speech -- the ability to convey ideas and feelings through words -- is unique to human beings. It can be a tremendous blessing, but it's also ripe for abuse.

The words our children choose to use in expressing themselves help create their personal window on the world.

Positive forms of expression can help our children grow into positive, optimistic people who view the world around them with generous and hopeful eyes. Negative forms of expression, such as defamatory, mean-spirited speech, will cultivate in them a negative, cynical view of the world.

Speech That Is Evil
It's easy to fall prey to a destructive pattern of speaking badly about others and gossiping -- to the point where it becomes a recreational activity! In order to enjoy the many people in our lives, we have to stop verbalizing the negativity and focus on their positive virtues. This takes a lot of effort but is essential in raising happy children.

If we're always finding fault, we will naturally be dissatisfied, disappointed and displeased, and so will be our children.

Raising happy children requires us to impart to our offspring the ability to look at everything positively --situations, places and material objects. Most important of all is how they view people.

Torah calls "evil language" anything negative, even if it's true.The Hebrew term for speaking badly of others is called lashon hara, literally "evil language." Interestingly, the Torah calls "evil language" anything negative, even if it's true. (Slander -- malicious, false information is called motzi shem ra, literally "giving another a bad name.")

In sharp contrast to the Western adage about sticks and stones not hurting, Judaism looks very gravely upon misuse of speech. Our tradition teaches that lashon hara can destroy many lives, even unintentionally, in one fell swoop:

•the person speaking,
•the person spoken about,
•and the person spoken to.
Let's look at why.

•The person speaking: Although you briefly become the center of attention when you dish out a juicy piece of gossip, in the long run people start mistrusting you. "Gee, I wonder what she says about me when I'm not around." People don't trust gossips and will avoid confiding in you. In the end, you're killing your own reputation. Furthermore, because you are misusing the gift of speech that God gave you, you are also lessened in His eyes.
•The person spoken about: The person under discussion is, of course, being killed in everyone's eyes. Whether the information is true or false, it is hard to take back defamatory words already spoken and undo the character assassination already committed. That person's reputation is forever blemished.
•The person spoken to: Interestingly enough, this is the person who is the most culpable, even though s/he is seemingly the innocent one. All s/he did was listen! But the Talmud says that listening to lashon hara is even worse than speaking it; the person had the power to stop it and didn't. Now the transgression is complete.
Exceptions to the Rule

Of course, there are times we are all owed to speak share negative information about others; in fact, there are times it is an obligation to do so. For example - when a friend is about to be become financially involved with a person we know to be unethical, or seriously dating a person we know to be abusive or otherwise unsuitable. Or when a child has information that will prevent harm from occurring.

Common Fallacies

Beware of the excuses children and adults often use for speaking lashon hara:

•"But it's true!" Lashon hara specifically refers to sharing derogatory information when it is true. Spreading vicious lies is far worse!
•"If she were here I would say it to her face." Maybe you would, and maybe you wouldn't. In any case, it is still forbidden.
•"Everyone knows about it." Does this justify you adding fuel to the fire? Even if it is on the front page of the newspaper, you are still forbidden to speak about it.
Parenting Tools

Teaching our children to avoid speaking lashon hara takes a concerted effort. Experiment with the following tools:

1.Teach by example. Showing children that it's a priority for you is perhaps the most important lesson. Don't let them hear your gossiping with your friends or relatives. Don't let them hear you laughing at other people's expense. Even better than "don't let them hear you" is not doing it -- whether they're in earshot or not.
2.Discuss the importance of avoiding lashon hara. Help your children identify what is and isn't proper speech. Talk about how improper speech can hurt others and how it hurts the person speaking lashon hara. There are a number of excellent Jewish books that can help you.
3.Discourage "tattling." When your kids come to "tell on" someone, tell them you aren't interested in reports of someone else's bad behavior, but that you're available if they need help or advice.
4.Get in the habit of not using names. There's no need for you to know the names of problem students at school unless you'll have a direct role in addressing the issue. Focus the discussion on your child's feelings, worries and concerns. If he or she needs protection that requires your intervention, tell him or her that it is proper to tell you the name of the offending child.
5.Don't fall into the trap of casual lashon hara. At dinner and at other family times, bring books to the table to discuss or talk about current events. When you discuss what happened in each person's day, focus on what they learned that day and how they felt. Show your children that there are more interesting things to talk about than other people's poor behavior.
6.Give positive reinforcement. Be sure to commend your kids when they manage to tell you about school or neighborhood problems without mentioning who was involved. Let them know that you're proud of them - and that God is too.
7.Reminders! Tape a reminder to the telephone: "No Lashon Hara!" Put up signs on the fridge and in other prominent locations around the house.
8.Study it. Read a small section of the laws of lashon hara each day during dinner or at your Shabbat table. Encourage discussion and examples

What Counts As Lashon Hara?Posted on July 23, 2010 by admin Rabbi Finkelman, in his Purity of Speech adaptation of the Chofetz Chaim’s Sefer Shmirat Halashon, teaches that the immediate physical punishment for speaking lashon hara can be seen as having benefitted the Jews back when this punishment was in effect. Jews who spoke lashon hara were punished with Tzaraat – leprosy. How could being struck with leprosy possibly be a good thing?

Rabbi Finkelman explains that when leprosy was the consequence of speaking lashon hara, Jews were conscious of when they’d misspoken. They knew what counted as lashon hara. Today, you often hear people defend their gossiping by saying that it isn’t lashon hara. People know they should speak kindly about their fellows, but it’s difficult. To avoid feeling bad, they justify their unkind words as something that doesn’t qualify as lashon hara.

In the Bible, Miriam is struck with leprosy for speaking ill of her brother Moses. In the following Parasha, the spies are sent to scout out the land. One well-known way of interpreting the Torah is by considering juxtapositions, things placed alongside each other.

Rashi explains why these two stories, seemingly unrelated, are stuck together. The spies – who were leaders of the 12 tribes of the Children of Israel – should have learned from Miriam’s punishment. They should have seen how dangerous speaking lashon hara is.

Unfortunately, they didn’t learn the lesson. And as a result of their negative report, G’ decided that that generation would not enter the land of Israel, but die in the desert. Thus began 40 years of wandering in the desert. And during that time, the whole generation died. (They’d asked Moses to send spies into Israel.)

When in doubt as to what counts as lashon hara, it’s better to keep quiet. Lashon hara carries serious consequences, even if they’re not as immediately obvious today, as they once were.

How To Constructively Criticize And ChidePosted on May 11, 2010 by admin (This continues the second story discussed in How To React To Lashon Hara. Lashon Hara is Hebrew for speaking negatively – albeit truthfully – about others.) In the same group studying Mishnah, there happened to be a younger student. He didn’t understand the full meaning of the siilence and so felt guilty regarding the unkind words (lashon hara).

Why feel guilty?

Because lashon hara destroys 3: The speaker, the hearer and the target. After Havdalah, the youth approached the Rabbi who’d only discussed the Mishnah without deviating into lashon hara, and asked to speak privately.

Once they were behind closed doors, the student said, “The course was great, so I’d like to thank you and the others for teaching us so well.” “Thankyou,” answered the Rabbi.

“There was just one little thing that bothered me, though – the other Rabbi’s comments on those he disagrees with politically,” continued the student. “I’m not sure whether it was or wasn’t lashon hara, but it certainly put me in an awkward situation. I didn’t think it would be well-received if I chided the other Rabbi, being younger and less learned than him. Perhaps you might speak to him?” he asked.

“The whole group felt that way,” responded the Rav. “That’s why there was the silence [due to the discomfort and disapproval.]”

The story has several important takeaways on offering criticism.

How To Provide Constructive Criticism And Chiding

1) Avoid embarassment and ensure effectiveness by seeking a private discussion. No one likes to hear that they’re wrong and especially not in front of others, which would cause them to lose face.

To avoid putting others on the defensive and to pre-empt a fruitless confrontation, seek a private forum after others have left. This is why the student waited until after Havdala, and went to a private room to avoid being overheard.

2) Praise before criticizing. In theory, a person may sense that praise is being given to soften upcoming criticism, and they may doubt the sincerity of the praise. But in practice, any such considerations fall by the wayside for two reasons.

First, emotionally, we all appreciate compliments and this tends to suffice to trump rational skepticism. Second, since we tend to view ourselves and our actions positively, we believe praise we receive on the grounds that it is true, even if the motive for giving it is to ease a path for constructive criticism. I’ve certainly never heard someone respond, when told they were generous and kind, “I’m a cheap jerk! What are you talking about?!”

Of course, it’s best to give praise one genuinely believes, for optimal results. This is especially true if it can be supported based on an event we’ve seen.

Often, however, even compliments that we cannot justify from our own experience with the person may suffice. The Haggadah says, “All of us are intelligent, all of us are righteous, all of us know the Torah.” (“Koulanu chachamim, koulanu tzadikkim, koulanou yod’im et haTorah.”) So praising a person’s intelligence, good deeds and/or knowledge of Torah are generally applicable type compliments that we can use in the absence of something more contextually appropriate.

3) Let the right person for the situation offer the constructive criticism. Age, perceived expertise, pre-existing friendship and other factors affect who is the “right” critic.

Ultimately, it is someone who the target of the constructive criticism will heed and not feel ashamed to receive criticism from.

Again, protecting dignity is key. Often, a close friend or family member is best, or at least a trusted peer, because they are known to mean well [in the target's mind],

How Abraham Would Give Constructive Criticism

In the story of Soddom, Abraham questions G’ as to whether He will really destory the city despite the possibility that some righteous people may reside there. Onkelos’ translation/interpretation adds the words, “Too True Are Your Judgments,” to Abraham’s chiding of G’. It’s unclear what the source of Onkelos’ addition is, but either way, the story sets an excellent example.

First, Abraham begins with praise.

Second, the text explicitly says that Abraham waited until the other members of his group had already travelled onwards. He was addressing G’ privately.

And we know that Abraham smashed his father’s idols and brought people to monotheism. The former demonstrates a love and respect for both G’ (similar to seeking the wellbeing of the object of the constructive criticism) and the latter point shows love for his fellow men (e.g. expertise in the subject of monotheism and appreciation of G’). So Abraham was the right person to plead Soddom’s case.

Rav Nir ? of Machon Meir Yeshiva once shared with us a story of Rav Aviner’s experience at Merkaz HaRav Yeshiva.

On Rav Aviner’s first day there, he happened to sit near the advanced students (avrechim). As they were discussing, one of the avrechim suddenly leapt backwards as if he were about to be stung by a scorpion! “Lashon Hara!” he shouted, interrupting another of the avrechim in mid sentence, in anticipation of the point about to be made. The avrech who’d been speaking didn’t finish the sentence.

(The avrech who leapt backwards was Rav Dov Bigon, Chief Rabbi of Machon Meir (Rosh Yeshiva). )

Obviously, this was an extraordinary reaction of a unique individual (in the positive sense) in the company of a particular, learned group. Our reaction in a similar situation must be appropriate to the circumstances. The following anecdote further illustrates the idea.

It happened once upon a time that a group of men were studying the Mishna during the third Shabbat meal (seuda shlishit). One Rav, in commenting and explaining a passage, went off on a tangent. The Rav who spoke after him expounded further, then went on to speak harshly of those whose political views were opposed to his own. (It was somewhat related to the discussion.)

The others in the group met the political aside with an uncomfortable silence, whereupon the Rav who’d made the comment and the first Rav returned to the topic of the Mishna. The meaning of the silence – i.e. disapproval – was clear to the Rav who spoke lashon hara, which explains why he immediately dropped the topic.

Two More Ways To React To Lashon Hara

In addition to the possible reaction presented in the first story, another two ways of reacting to lashon hara are presented by this parable. One reaction is silence. The other reaction is to change the topic.

1) Silence. In the context of lashon hara, silence indicates a few things. First, it is the opposite action to joining in with the lashon hara and piling on the unfortunate target. Second, silence – to those attuned to non-verbal communication – expresses disapproval and/or disagreement without saying so explicitly. Thus, there is an instant reaction - which prevents sinking further into the muckraking – without risking embarasshing the person who spoke ill of his fellow.

Note: This is dependent on the speaker being attuned to non-verbal communication and not just being oblivious, thinking perhaps that the silence is just rapt attention.

2) Changing the topic. This is another time-honoured tactic for avoiding uncomfortable discussiong and cutting them short once begun. In the above anecdote, the speaker himself changed the topic along with the other Rav.

Lashon Hara is based in a feeling of superiority

To be able to speak unkindly about another person, you have to consider yourself superior to that person. Specifically, you need to consider yourself superior in that field in which you’re attacking the other person. If you were at the same level, it would be pretty foolish to attack others – the proverbial pot calling the kettle black.

Yet, even if it’s true that we do such or such a mitzva that someone else doesn’t do, or otherwise do really behave in a way that is superior to another person’s behaviour, that mitzva must be put in its proper context.

The context of our comparison

What is it that helps us realize that the implicit comparison between our behaviour and theirs is wrong? It’s the role of G’ in our daily lives.

Rabbi Haim Moshe Luzzato’s book Mesilat Yesharim, the Path of the Just/Righteous, develops this point. The Path of the Just teaches us that the more mitzvot we accomplish, the more humble we must be.

That’s a pretty counter-intuitive statement! Normally, the better we behave, the more we can feel proud in our accomplishments, even if we recognize this should remain internal (to avoid being boastful). The explanation for this paradox is the role of G’ in our daily lives.

Mesilat Yesharim explains this by analogy us to a poor person who receives a gift. The greater the gift, the greater the poor person’s embarassment relative to his mediocre financial status. In our largely middle class society, we might understand this better by thinking of the last time we tried to give a gift to the “friend who has everything.” The difficulty finding him a gift is because he already has everything. Inversely, the poor person has very little.

Likewise, we all start as babies with no knowledge of the Torah, mitzvot etc. It’s only by divine generosity that we have the opportunity to accomplish mitzvot. It’s the old question of nature / nurture. While our own efforts are not to be belittled, G’ is responsible for giving us the chance to accomplish the mitzvot. We can’t ignore “nature” [read: G'].

For example, a Bar Mitzvah boy who puts on tefillin thanks his parents for buying them for him. Sure he’s putting them on, but he was lucky to have parents who put him in that situation. And while they worked to afford those tefillin, obviously G’ had a role to play in making their efforts at earning a living successful.

It’s not for nothing that we refer to G’ as Avinu Shebashamayim, Our Father In Heaven.

This teaches us 2 lessons.

1. The greater one’s achievements in the Torah, the less merit one must have had to start with! What is amazing about the marathon runner who crosses the finish line isn’t that he’s now completed the race (his current state), but that he came from 42 km distance away! Therefore, it’s better to avoid speaking Lashon Hara about others, lest others bring up our the distant point from which we began our own marathon.

2. Our good deeds are only partially attributable to us. While it’s true that we chose to make an effort and do them, G’ put us in a fertile environment and gave us the opportunity to accomplish those mitzvot.

This leads to another piece of advice given by Rav Luzzato in mesilat Yesharim. In our moments of pride, we should recall all the times where we’ve made stumbled along the way. Even King David, of whom some comment that he never erred, said of himself “And I am but a worm and ashes.” (The anecdote with Bat-Sheva and Uri the Hittite is in dispute as to whether it constitutes a mistake on the part of David.)

In sum:

a) Lashon hara is based on feelign superior relative to others.

b) That feeling is vain because

(i) whoever has improved themselves was imperfect to begin with and

(ii) their improvement is largely attributable to G’.

Just as we don’t boast about our hair colour, which we didn’t choose, we shouldn’t speak badly about others whose conditions have been different and thus lacked the opportunity to improve themselves.

Lashon Hara As Blasphemy – Desecrating G’s Name

Other people’s circumstances are largely influenced by G’, just like our own circumstances. If we speak badly about someone else who doesn’t accomplish X or Y mitzva, what we’re saying indirectly is that G’ is unjust. Why? Because He didn’t give them as favourable circumstances as our own.

The problem with that is that we can’t understand G’ to a sufficient degree in order to be able to judge him. We can have recognition towards him – hakarat hatov – which is the basis for loving – ahavat – G’ .

But when He acts in a way that appears difficult to us to understand – e.g. our difficulties understanding the Shoah (Holocaust) – we’re better off reserving our judgement to avoid desecrating G’s Name (chilloul H’), even if it’s only an unintentional desecration.

Finally, I’d like to return to that idea of humility based on a retrospective view of the long way we’ve come. As we continue to make progress, we realize that there’s still a long road ahead of us. Thankfully, “the Eternal Nation isn’t intimidated by the long road.” (Am Hanetzach Lo Mephached MeDerech Arucka.)

When non-observant people talk about how difficult it is to observe Jewish law, they usually mention the difficulty of observing Shabbat or keeping kosher or other similarly detailed rituals. Yet the laws that are most difficult to keep, that are most commonly violated even by observant Jews, are the laws regarding improper speech. This is a very important area of Jewish law; entire books have been written on the subject.

The Power of Speech
Judaism is intensely aware of the power of speech and of the harm that can be done through speech. The rabbis note that the universe itself was created through speech. Of the 43 sins enumerated in the Al Cheit confession recited on Yom Kippur, 11 are sins committed through speech. The Talmud tells that the tongue is an instrument so dangerous that it must be kept hidden from view, behind two protective walls (the mouth and teeth) to prevent its misuse.

The harm done by speech is even worse than the harm done by stealing or by cheating someone financially: money lost can be repaid, but the harm done by speech can never be repaired. For this reason, some sources indicate that there is no forgiveness for lashon ha-ra (disparaging speech). This is probably hyperbole, but it illustrates the seriousness of improper speech. A Chasidic tale vividly illustrates the danger of improper speech: A man went about the community telling malicious lies about the rabbi. Later, he realized the wrong he had done, and began to feel remorse. He went to the rabbi and begged his forgiveness, saying he would do anything he could to make amends. The rabbi told the man, "Take a feather pillow, cut it open, and scatter the feathers to the winds." The man thought this was a strange request, but it was a simple enough task, and he did it gladly. When he returned to tell the rabbi that he had done it, the rabbi said, "Now, go and gather the feathers. Because you can no more make amends for the damage your words have done than you can recollect the feathers."

Speech has been compared to an arrow: once the words are released, like an arrow, they cannot be recalled, the harm they do cannot be stopped, and the harm they do cannot always be predicted, for words like arrows often go astray.

Tale-Bearing
There are two mitzvot in the Torah that specifically address improper speech: Thou shalt not go up and down as a tale-bearer among thy people (Lev. 19:16), and ye shall not wrong one another (Lev. 25:17, which according to tradition refers to wronging a person with speech).

Tale-bearing is, essentially, any gossip. The Hebrew word for tale-bearer is "rakhil" (Reish-Kaf-Yod-Lamed), which is related to a word meaning trader or merchant. The idea is that a tale-bearer is like a merchant, but he deals in information instead of goods. In our modern "Information Age," the idea of information as a product has become more clear than ever before, yet it is present even here in the Torah.

It is a violation of this mitzvah to say anything about another person, even it is true, even if it is not negative, even if it is not secret, even if it hurts no one, even if the person himself would tell the same thing if asked! It is said that the telling of gossip leads to bloodshed, which is why the next words in the Torah are "you shall not stand aside while your fellow's blood is shed." The story of Do'eig the Edomite (I Samuel Chs. 21-22) is often used to illustrate the harm that can be done by tale-bearing. Do'eig saw Achimelekh the Kohein give David bread and a sword, a completely innocent act intended to aid a leading member of Saul's court. Do'eig reported this to Saul. Do'eig's story was completely true, not negative, not secret, and Achimelekh would have told Saul exactly the same thing if asked (in fact, he did so later). Yet Saul misinterpreted this tale as proof that Achimelekh was supporting David in a rebellion, and proceeded to slaughter all but one of the kohanim at Nob.

The person who listens to gossip is even worse than the person who tells it, because no harm could be done by gossip if no one listened to it. It has been said that lashon ha-ra (disparaging speech) kills three: the person who speaks it, the person who hears it, and the person about whom it is told. (Talmud Arachin 15b).

In Jewish law, all things are considered to be secret unless a person specifically says otherwise. For this reason, you will note that in the Torah, G-d constantly says to Moses, "Speak to the Children of Israel, saying:" or "Speak to the Children of Israel and tell them:" If G-d did not specifically say this to Moses, Moses would be forbidden to repeat his words! Nor is there any time-limit on secrets. The Talmud tells the story of a student who revealed a secret that he had heard 22 years earlier, and he was immediately banished from the house of study! (Talmud Sanhedrin 31a)

The gravest of these sins of tale-bearing is lashon ha-ra (literally, "the evil tongue"), which involves discrediting a person or saying negative things about a person, even if those negative things are true. Indeed, true statements are even more damaging than false ones, because you can't defend yourself by disproving the negative statement if it's true! Some sources indicate that lashon ha-ra is equal in seriousness to murder, idol worship, and incest/adultery (the only three sins that you may not violate even to save a life).

It is forbidden to even imply or suggest negative things about a person. It is forbidden to say negative things about a person, even in jest. It is likewise considered a "shade of lashon ha-ra" to say positive things about a person in the presence of his enemies, because this will encourage his enemies to say negative things to contradict you!

One who tells disparaging things that are false is referred to as a motzi sheim ra, that is, one who spreads a bad report. This is considered the lowest of the low.

It is generally not a sin to repeat things that have been told "in the presence of three persons." The idea is that if it is told in the presence of three persons, it is already public knowledge, and no harm can come of retelling it. However, even in this case, you should not repeat it if you know you will be spreading the gossip further.

When Tale-Bearing is Allowed
There are a few exceptional circumstances when tale-bearing is allowed, or even required. Most notably, tale-bearing is required in a Jewish court of law, because it is a mitzvah to give testimony and that mitzvah overrides the general prohibition against tale-bearing. Thus, a person is required to reveal information, even if it is something that was explicitly told in confidence, even if it will harm a person, in a Jewish court of law.

A person is also required to reveal information to protect a person from immediate, serious harm. For example, if a person hears that others are plotting to kill someone, he is required to reveal this information. That is another reason why the commandment not to go about as a tale-bearer is juxtaposed with "you shall not stand aside while your fellow's blood is shed."

In limited circumstances, one is also permitted to reveal information if someone is entering into a relationship that he would not enter if he knew certain information. For example, it may be permissible to tell a person that his prospective business partner is untrustworthy, or that a prospective spouse has a disease. This exception is subject to significant and complex limitations; however, if those limitations are satisfied, the person with the information is required to reveal it.

In all of these exceptions, a person is not permitted to reveal information if the same objective could be fulfilled without revealing information. For example, if you could talk a person out of marrying for reasons other than the disease, you may not reveal the disease.

Wronging a Person through Speech
Leviticus 25:17 says, "You shall not wrong one another." This has traditionally been interpreted as wronging a person with speech. It includes any statement that will embarrass, insult or deceive a person, or cause a person emotional pain or distress.

Here are some commonly-used examples of behavior that is forbidden by this mitzvah:

•You may not call a person by a derogatory nickname, or by any other embarrassing name, even if he is used to it.
•You may not ask an uneducated person for an opinion on a scholarly matter (that would draw attention to his lack of knowledge or education).
•You may not ask a merchant how much he would sell something for if you have no intention of buying.
•You may not refer someone to another person for assistance when you know the other person cannot help (in other words, it's a violation of Jewish law to give someone the run-around!).
•You may not deceive a person, even if no harm is done by the deception; for example, you may not sell non-kosher meat to a non-Jew telling him that it is kosher, even though no harm is done to the non-Jew by this deception.
•You may not sell a person damaged goods without identifying the damage, even if the price you give is fair for the goods in their damaged condition.
•You may not offer a person a gift or invite a person to dinner if you know that the person will not accept.
•You may not compliment a person if you do not mean it.

The Ten Commandments are in many ways the highlight of the entire Torah. But the Midrash1 makes a surprising statement: it says that the first word of the Ten Commandments is in the Egyptian language. What does this mean?

The Ten Commandments are the summary of the entire Torah. They were heard from G-d by the entire Jewish people. The first Command, "I am G-d, your G-d, who took you out of the Land of Egypt" is the basic statement of our special relationship with the Infinite. The first word, Anokhi, means, "I am." G-d is speaking of Himself, and communicating with us.

The Midrash is intriguing. It says this first word Anokhi is Egyptian, because G-d wanted to speak with us in the language we had learnt while we were in Egypt. This tells us something about the nature of Torah and of being a Jew. G-d does not want to relate to us only on the sacred, spiritual level of our lives, represented by Hebrew, the holy language. He wants to reach the earthly "Egyptian" dimension as well.

We should not try to pretend that we do not have this lower aspect. Rather, we should try to control it, then elevate it and ultimately transform it into something holy.

G-d helps us in this task: there are Jewish teachings about every aspect of life, including the most basic. The mitzvot (commandments) connect us to G-d on every level of our being. For this reason Anokhi, the first word of the Ten Commandments, is in Egyptian: it reaches down to the "Egyptian" person inside us and transforms him or her into a Jew. 2

Meeting Point

The Sages tell us that every Jewish soul ever to be born was present at the giving of the Torah. This includes every single person who would ever become a true proselyte to Judaism. It was a moment of meeting of the entire Jewish people together, and a meeting of the Jewish people with G-d.

The recognition of G-d which was experienced at Sinai remains in the heart of every Jew, and is the spark of his or her Jewish identity.

Further, during his forty days and nights on Mount Sinai the entire Torah was revealed to Moses. The Sages tell us that "Every new idea which would ever be suggested by a scholar in discussion with his teacher - was told to Moses at Sinai".

Sinai was therefore the ultimate meeting point of G-d, the entire Jewish people and the Torah.

Seven loopy llamas - and an alpaca called Banksy -
have started to think they're dogs after coming top of the class in obedience lessons.
The pack have stunned their owners by learning how to fetch, roll over, sit and complete a doggy assault course.
Tim and Terri Crowfoot had heard llamas are incredibly intelligent but never thought they could teach the pack to stay.

Don't Accept The New Testament As Yahweh's Word On The Basis Of Human Tradition

In the context of the New Testament canon Yahweh's people should not accept that the New Testament is Yahweh's word simply on the basis of human tradition. For Yah'shuah has shown that human tradition is NOT the basis for determining true worship. Matthew 4:4 reads,

In these comments Yah'shuah quoted from Moses' words to the children of Israel in Deuteronomy 8:3,

Truth Is Yahweh's Word

John 17:17 reads,

It is therefore clear from Yah'shuah's words that human beings are to live by every word proceeding out of the mouth of Yahweh. He also defines truth as Yahweh's word. Therefore living by the truth is living by Yahweh's word, living by Yahweh's commandment. This is what human beings are to live by, and not by human tradition, especially human tradition contrary to Yahweh's word.

To Believe Yah'shuah/Jesus You Must Believe Moses' Writings
John 5:46-47 reads,

5:46For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me. 5:47But if you don’t believe his writings, how will you believe my words?"

Yah'shuah's words show that it is necessary for one to believe Moses' writings in order to believe him. In other words, those who believe Moses' writings are the ones who believe Yah'shuah, and those who do not believe Moses' writings are the one who do not believe Yah'shuah. Yah'shuah therefore implicitly affirmed that Moses' writings are indeed Yahweh's word.

Yah'shuah Didn't Destroy The Law Or The Prophets

Matthew 5:17-18 reads,

5:17"Don’t think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I didn’t come to destroy, but to fulfill. 5:18For most assuredly, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the law, until all things are accomplished.

Yah'shuah therefore affirmed that the law and the prophets, the writings he affirmed as Yahweh's word, would continue in applicability even up to the time of the passing away of heaven and earth. Seeing that heaven and earth are still with us it is indeed the conclusion that nothing has passed away from the law, and it remains in full application.

Yah'shuah Commanded His Disciples To Abide By Moses' Authority

Matthew 23:1-4 reads,

23:1Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples, 23:2saying, "The scribes and the Pharisees sat on Moses’ seat. 23:3All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don’t do their works; for they say, and don’t do. 23:4For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them.

Yah'shuah commanded human beings, including his disciples, to abide by the authority vested in Moses. In other words, he simply affirmed his word in Matthew 5:17-18, on the continuing applicability of the law or Yahweh's word as delivered by Moses to the children of Israel.

Believe What The Prophets Have Spoken

Luke 24:25-27 reads,

24:25He said to them, "Foolish men, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 24:26Didn’t the Christ have to suffer these things, and to enter into his glory?" 24:27Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

Yah'shuah's usage of the writings of Moses and those of the prophets shows that he acknowledged these as Yahweh's word. For in Matthew 4 and 15 he clearly taught that human beings are to live only by Yahweh's word, and here he was indeed teaching his disciples by the writings of Moses and the prophets. Yah'shuah therefore acknowledged that the writings of Moses and the prophets are indeed Yahweh's word.

Live By The Writings In The Law Of Moses, The Prophets And The Psalms

Luke 24:42-49 reads,

24:42They gave him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb. 24:43He took it, and ate in front of them. 24:44He said to them, "This is what I told you, while I was still with you, that all things which are written in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms, concerning me must be fulfilled."

24:45Then he opened their minds, that they might understand the Scriptures. 24:46He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 24:47and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 24:48You are witnesses of these things. 24:49Behold, I send forth the promise of my Father on you. But wait in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high."

According to Yah'shuah the collection of writings that made up Yahweh's word, what all human beings are to live by, is that called the law of Moses, the prophets and the psalms - what is today called the Old Testament. This is synonymous with the Scriptures, according to the author of the above words - Luke.

Yah'shuah's Disciples Of All Nations Are To Observe The Things He Personally Commanded His Disciples
Matthew 28:18-20 reads,

28:18Jesus came to them and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 28:19Go, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 28:20teaching them to observe all things which I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

Yah'shuah clearly commanded his disciples to teach new disciples of all nations to observe all things that he had commanded his disciples. He commanded them to live by every word that proceeds out of Yahweh's mouth. He also showed them that Yahweh's word is contained in the writings called the law of Moses, the prophets and the psalms (writings), now commonly known as the Old Testament. Therefore, the things that Yah'shuah's disciples are to observe are those that are contained in the writings commonly called the Old Testament. For observing the things in these writings is indeed living by words proceeding out of the mouth of Yahweh, seeing that words that proceeded out of Yahweh's mouth are contained in these writings.

Yahweh's Word To His Disciples Concerning Verification Of Words

Isaiah 8:16-20 reads,

8:16Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples. 8:17I will wait for Yahweh, who hides his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him. 8:18Behold, I and the children whom Yahweh has given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from Yahweh of Hosts, who dwells in Mount Zion. 8:19When they shall tell you, "Consult with those who have familiar spirits and with the wizards, who chirp and who mutter:" shouldn’t a people consult with their God? On behalf of the living should they consult with the dead? 8:20To the law and to the testimony! If they don’t speak according to this word, surely there is no morning for them.

8:16 clearly shows that the testimony (prophets and writings) and the law (of Moses) should be bound and sealed among Yahweh's disciples. And in matters of light Yahweh's disciples are not to consult with forces of darkness. They are to consult only the law and the testimony. In other words, the very writings that Yah'shuah later used in affirming that he was indeed the Messiah, the law of Moses, the prophets and the writings, are the very same ones that Yahweh commands his disciples to consult. For light is contained in his word, which is recorded in these writings. And anyone speaking contrary to his word in these writings is devoid of light. In other words, any writing that is contrary to the law of Moses, the prophets and the writings is not Yahweh's word, but a word and work of darkness!

Another Test Yahweh Gives His People Concerning Verification Of Words

Deuteronomy 18:9-22 reads,

18:9When you are come into the land which Yahweh your God gives you, you shall not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. 18:10There shall not be found with you anyone who makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices sorcery, or an enchanter, or a sorcerer, 18:11or a charmer, or a consulter with a familiar spirit, or a wizard, or a necromancer. 18:12For whoever does these things is an abomination to Yahweh: and because of these abominations Yahweh your God does drive them out from before you. 18:13You shall be perfect with Yahweh your God. 18:14For these nations, that you shall dispossess, listen to those who practice sorcery, and to diviners; but as for you, Yahweh your God has not allowed you so to do. 18:15Yahweh your God will raise up to you a prophet from the midst of you, of your brothers, like me; to him you shall listen; 18:16according to all that you desired of Yahweh your God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of Yahweh my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I not die. 18:17Yahweh said to me, They have well said that which they have spoken. 18:18I will raise them up a prophet from among their brothers, like you; and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I shall command him. 18:19It shall happen, that whoever will not listen to my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. 18:20But the prophet, who shall speak a word presumptuously in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who shall speak in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die. 18:21If you say in your heart, How shall we know the word which Yahweh has not spoken? 18:22When a prophet speaks in the name of Yahweh, if the thing doesn’t follow, nor happen, that is the thing which Yahweh has not spoken: the prophet has spoken it presumptuously, you shall not be afraid of him.

Don't Listen To Those Who Practice Abominations

Yahweh clearly warned the children of Israel not to listen to those who practice abominations - the practices of darkness as seen in Isaiah 8:16-20. It is on account of both practising these abominations and listening to the practitioners of these abominations that Yahweh cast out of the land of Canaan those who inhabited it prior to the children of Israel.

JESUS (d. 30 c.e.), whom Christianity sees as its founder and object of faith, was a Jew who lived toward the end of the Second Commonwealth period......The Encyclopedia Judaica, Volume 12, page 805, gives us additional information, concerning the Hebrew spelling of Joshua, which is yod-heh-waw-shin-ayin.

This source also points out to us that this Name, correctly pronounced Yahshua, is a compound name constructed with the Tetragrammaton,which is the Name: YAHWEH, . The Name Yahshua follows the common practice among the true worshippers of Yahweh, in forming and using compound names which brought glory to Yahweh's Name....................The Name Yahshua is just such a compound Name. It is a combination of Yahweh's Name in a personal name (YAH: yod-heh) and SHUA (shin-ayin), which means salvation. Deuteronomy 6:4-5—

Isayah 43:10-12—

Isayah 44:8—
Do not fear, nor be afraid. Have I not told you from that time, and have declared; You are My witnesses! Is there a source of power except Me? Truly, there is no other rock; I know not one.

6 So that they may know from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting that There is none besides me. I am Yahweh, and there is no other!

It should now be obvious to anyone that the apostles, as well as the prophets, did not believe in or teach a pre-existent God-savior. The apostles clearly taught against pagan Godworship, the same worship all Christianity teaches today.

However, the apostles knew Yahweh's Plan which called for a man to be born who would be sacrificed for the past sins of many. They also knew that this man would be raised again by Yahweh.........................Yahweh has always revealed Himself as our Father. Yahshua Messiah taught His twelve apostles to pray to Yahweh, and to begin their prayers to Him as "Our Father."

As you read for yourself, you will find that Yahshua taught His disciples, those who obeyed Yahweh, to pray in the following manner.

Luke 11:2—
So He said to them: When you pray, using this example, say: Our Father Who is in heaven, hallowed be; to show reverence and respect to, Your Name. Your Kingdom come. Your will be done; as it is in heaven, so may it be in earth.

In their ministry, the disciples spoke of Yahweh as the Father of Yahshua, saying this specifically in the following Scriptures:

Ephesians 1:17—
Asking that the Father of our King, Yahshua Messiah, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation; unveiling and uncovering truths, for the full knowledge of Him.

I Kepha 1:3—
Blessed be Yahweh, the Father of our King Yahshua Messiah, Who, according to His abundant mercy, has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Yahshua Messiah from the dead;

I Corinthians 8:5-6—
5 For even though there are many called gods (elohim), whether in heaven or on earth (As there are many gods; elohim, and many lords; baalim.),

The Holy Scriptures show that we accept one of two beings as our head. We can either accept Yahweh as our Father (head) or we can accept Satan as our head.

Through this world's lust to break the Laws of Yahweh, they have rejected Yahweh as their Father, while accepting Satan the adversary as their head. By doing this, they have become the people of the devil, as the Apostle Shaul describes in the following Scriptures, because they did not like to retain Yahweh in their knowledge..............................................Yahshua Messiah said the following.

Yahchanan 6:44—
No man can come to Me, unless the Father, Who has sent Me, draws him; and I will establish him as a priest at the last day.

When we are called out of this world by Yahweh's Holy Spirit and begin to understand the importance of Yahweh's Holy Scriptures in our lives, we, even then, are only half of the creation Yahweh requires us to be, in order for us to enter His Kingdom. To understand this, we must understand the Plan of Yahweh.

When Yahshua was resurrected from the dead, He became the firstborn of many brothers.

Romans 8:29—
For whom He did foreknow, He also did foreordain to be conformed to the image of His Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

When we are conformed to Yahshua we will also be conformed to the Father Yahweh, because Yahshua conformed to be exactly like the Father.

Was Jesus a Nazi? During the Third Reich, German Protestant theologians, motivated by racism and tapping into traditional Christian anti-Semitism, redefined Jesus as an Aryan and Christianity as a religion at war with Judaism. In 1939, these theologians established the Institute for the Study and Eradication of Jewish Influence on German Religious Life. In The Aryan Jesus, Susannah Heschel shows that during the Third Reich, the Institute became the most important propaganda organ of German Protestantism, exerting a widespread influence and producing a nazified Christianity that placed anti-Semitism at its theological center.

Based on years of archival research, The Aryan Jesus examines the membership and activities of this controversial theological organization. With headquarters in Eisenach, the Institute sponsored propaganda conferences throughout the Nazi Reich and published books defaming Judaism, including a dejudaized version of the New Testament and a catechism proclaiming Jesus as the savior of the Aryans. Institute members--professors of theology, bishops, and pastors--viewed their efforts as a vital support for Hitler's war against the Jews. Heschel looks in particular at Walter Grundmann, the Institute's director and a professor of the New Testament at the University of Jena. Grundmann and his colleagues formed a community of like-minded Nazi Christians who remained active and continued to support each other in Germany's postwar years.

The Aryan Jesus raises vital questions about Christianity's recent past and the ambivalent place of Judaism in Christian thought.

ANTISEMITISM AND CHRISTIANITY

Hitler did not achieve most of his political and military goals, but on the Jewish question he succeeded remarkably. If his antisemitic propaganda found resonance, its success can be credited in large measure to the unrelenting anti-Jewish Christian theological discourse that linked Nazi propaganda with the traditions and moral authority of the churches. That link was proclaimed with enthusiasm by Nazi Christians: “In the Nazi treatment of the Jews and its ideological stance, Luther’s intentions, after centuries, are being fulfilled.”13 Antisemitism was the lingua franca of the Nazi era and was employed by church leaders to gain credibility with their own adherents—but also out of sincere antisemitic conviction. Antisemitism was also a tactic in the rhetorical battles among the different Christian factions, with each accusing its opponents of being “Jewish” while positioning itself as the true Nazi believer.14

Already in 1971 the historian Uriel Tal challenged the entrenched view that racist antisemitism is a new phenomenon that repudiates Christianity by arguing that it was actually utterly dependent on Christian anti-Judaism for its success: “it was not the economic crises that brought about this new political, racial and antireligious antisemitism, but completely the reverse, it was precisely the anti-Christian and antireligious ideology of racial antisemitism which hampered the first antisemitic parties in their efforts to utilize the economic crisis for their political development . . . [because] what still attracted the masses was the classical, traditional Christian anti-Judaism, however adapted it may have become to the new economic conditions.”15 Tal demonstrated that Germany’s antisemitic, völkisch movements that arose in the nineteenth century had to abandon their initial anti-Christian stances in order to win supporters for whom Christian anti-Jewish arguments held profound political appeal.16 Even within the so-called “church struggle” between German Christians and the Confessing Church for control of the Protestant church, antisemitism became the glue that united the otherwise warring factions. Similarly, however much Hitler made use of images of messianism, redemption, and other Christian motifs, the most useful and consistent aspect of Christianity for the Nazi movement was its anti-Judaism, just as the single most consistent and persistent feature of Nazism was its antisemitism.

Hitler was well aware of arguments that were central to the Institute: that Jesus was an Aryan, and that Paul, as a Jew, had falsified Jesus’s message, themes he repeatedly mentioned in private conversations, together with rants against the church as a Jewish subversion of the Aryan spirit (though the reliability of his reported private conversations is uncertain). In a diatribe alleged to have occurred in October of 1941, the month Hitler made the decision to murder the Jews,17 Hitler proclaimed that Jesus was not a Jew, but a fighter against Jewry whose message was falsified and exploited by Paul: “St. Paul transformed a local movement of Aryan opposition to Jewry into a super-temporal religion, which postulates the equality of all men . . . [causing] the death of the Roman Empire.”18 His views demonstrate that the German Christian diagnosis of Christianity as tainted by Jewish influence resonated at the highest levels of the Reich, but that its prescribed solution of dejudaization was met with skepticism if not sheer mockery. Was Christianity thoroughly impregnated with Judaism, or could it be dejudaized, as the Institute claimed?

Like the antisemitic parties of the nineteenth century, the Nazi Party could not reject Christianity—not only because it would offend the moral and social sensibilities of Germans, but because the antisemitism of Christianity formed the basis on which the party could appeal to Germans with its racial and nationalist ideology. Nazism’s relationship to Christianity was not one of rejection, nor was it an effort to displace Christianity and become a form of “political religion.” Nazism did not present racial antisemitism as antithetical to Christian theological anti-Judaism; rather, Nazi ideology was a form of supersessionism, a usurpation and colonization of Christian theology, especially its antisemitism, for its own purposes. The theology of the Institute was a similar effort at supersessionism in reverse, taking over elements of Nazi racial ideology to bolster and redefine the Christian message. The result was an uneasy competition between two sides seeking popular support and institutional control, though access to power was, of course, highly asymmetrical.

Thus, while seeking to undermine the political power and moral authority of the churches, Nazism simultaneously appropriated key elements of Christian theology into its own ideology both for purposes of winning adherents used to Christian arguments and also to give its own message a coherence and resonance with the age-old Christian teachings that had shaped European culture. Conversely, German Christians appropriated Nazi rhetoric and symbols into the church to give its Christianity a contemporary resonance. Both the Nazis and the German Christians identified Hitler as Christ’s second coming. That gave Hitler the status of a supernatural being and gave Christ renewed glory as a contemporary figure of enormous political significance. Both were suspicious of the institutional church. Factions within the Nazi Reich and the party saw the church as competition and a potential threat to be ultimately eliminated after the war.19 The German Christians sought control and radical reform of the Protestant church, which they never fully achieved, leading them to bitter complaints and, in some cases, demands for its demolition. Meanwhile, Christianity was not to be banned nor the churches outlawed; rather, as the historian Ernst Piper writes, Nazi strategy was to control the churches and lead to “a steadily advancing process of delegitimization and disassociation, of undermining and repression” that would undercut the church’s moral authority and position of respect.20 In its own supersessionist theology, an amalgam of Nazism and Christianity, with a rejection of church authority and doctrine, an assertion of German supremacy and Jewish degeneracy, and absurd revisions of the Bible, the German Protestant church contributed substantially to the Nazi project of undermining Christianity.

The establishment of the Institute in 1939 and the proliferation of its projects during the war years demonstrates that the antisemitism of the German Christians was not simply rhetorical, but was intended to lend active support to Nazi policies against the Jews—or, at times, to push those policies in more radical directions. Indeed, certain Protestant theologians stood at the forefront in discussions of the so-called Jewish problem; Gerhard Kittel’s notorious speech of May 1933, later published as a pamphlet, has been called the most antisemitic utterance of that year.21 In considering ways to rid Germany of Jews, Kittel proposed not only expulsion and guest status, but extermination (“Ausrottung”), a method he rejected only because it was too difficult to implement. On February 24–25, 1936, a few months after the proclamation of the Nuremberg Laws, but long before Jews were being deported and murdered, a group of theologians, some of whom subsequently became leaders of the Institute, met in Dresden to discuss a merger of the German Christian factions of the state churches of Thuringia and Saxony. During the course of the meeting, Siegfried Leffler, a German Christian leader, official in the Thuringian Ministry of Education, and, by 1939, figurehead of the Institute, stated:

In a Christian life, the heart always has to be disposed toward the Jew, and that’s how it has to be. As a Christian, I can, I must, and I ought always to have or to find a bridge to the Jew in my heart. But as a Christian, I also have to follow the laws of my nation [Volk], which are often presented in a very cruel way, so that again I am brought into the harshest of confl icts with the Jew. Even if I know “thou shalt not kill” is a commandment of God or “thou shalt love the Jew” because he too is a child of the eternal Father, I am able to know as well that I have to kill him, I have to shoot him, and I can only do that if I am permitted to say: Christ.22
What is striking is not only that Leffler spoke of killing Jews as early as February 1936, long before mass murder of the Jews became Nazi policy, but that there was no response to his comments from those attending, neither immediately nor later in the session; the discussion simply continued as if murder of Jews in the name of Christ was a customary topic.23 The aryanization of Jesus into a manly, heroic, fighting spirit reflected among the theologians the “heroic realism” that prevailed in the 1930s within right-wing political thought. That “heroism” meant killing one’s opponent without emotion but in accord with principles of natural law, in defense of one’s own race and at the cost of personal sacrifice.24 Paul Althaus, professor of theology at the University of Erlangen and a noted ethicist, was present at the meeting, but expressed nothing to indicate that he was appalled or disturbed by Leffler’s remarks. The lack of outrage is evidence that ridding Germany of Jews had become an acceptable point of discussion among theologians, even when murder was proposed as a technique of achieving it. The Nuremberg Laws, while perceived by many German Jews as protection from far worse legislation, were viewed as an encouragement by the German Christian movement to take even more radical positions. Legal cases in German courts, brought in the wake of the Nuremberg Laws’ criminalization of sexual relations and marriage between Jews and Aryans, and widely reported in the German press, implicated Jews as sexual predators of Aryans, further encouraging Christian theologians to insist on protecting Christian purity by eradicating Jewishness with even more radical measures.25 The penetration of Christian bodies by Jewish sex reiterated a typical motif of racist rhetoric, the dangers of miscegenation, and reinforced fears that Aryanism was not immutable, but subject to destruction by Jews.26 Antisemites had long insisted that German Aryan women were vulnerable to Jewish predation, and Jesus, whose gentleness and suffering was viewed as effeminate by German Christians, was depicted in one caricature as an Aryan woman on a cross with a lecherous Jewish man in the foreground: the crucifixion as the Jewish rape of Germany. ............................

The ancestors of this breed back date to animals living 3000
years ago. These ancestors were known as the Nisean horse. The breed
first appeared in the Turkmenistan desert Kara Kum. This is a rocky
flat desert surrounded by mountains. Other claim that the Akhal Teke
were descendants of the mounts of Mongol raiders in the 13th and 14th
century. This breed is very similar to the extinct Turkoman horse bred
in Iran.

The Akhal-Teke was originally used by the Tribesman of Turkmenistan for raiding.
They bred their horses and kept records of their pedigrees using oral tradition.

In 1881, Turkmenistan became part of the Russian Empire. One Russian
general, Kuropatkin, was impressed by the Akhal-Teke and founded a
breeding farm and named the horses the "Akhal-Tekes." The first
studbook was printed in 1941 by the Russians and included 287 stallions
and 468 mares.

There are several major breed characteristics of the Akhal-Teke. They usally
stand between 14.2 and 16 hands and are famous for the individuals who have
a golden buckskin or palomino color with a metallic sheen. This color pattern was
thoughtto have been used as camouflage in the desert. They also have a fine
head with long ears. They are equipped with strong, fine limbs and a
slim body and rib cage.

Bashkir Curly Horse

One of the most unique breeds I've ever seen is the Bashkir Curly Horse,
also called Curly Horses or American Bashkir Curly Horses. I have never seen one
in real life but I would love to see one someday.

The Bashkir Curly originated sometime in the ancient world. It is a
mystery exactly where and when but curly haired horses have been
depicted in Chinese art and statuary as early as 161 AD. A photograph of
a curly coated horse was printed in Russia in the 1938 issue of a
nature magazine called The Evolution of the Horse. This photo was later
remade and featured in a cartoon called Strange as it Seems.
It is thought that the curly trait originated from the Russian Lokai
breed but this was found only after they were incorrectly named after
the Russian Bashkir. No one is sure how these horses came to America but
some believe they have been here since the 1800s.

In 1898, a young man named Peter Damele and his father were out
riding in the high country of central Nevada. Peter and his father were
surprised to see three horses covered entirely with tightly curled
ringlets. Today, most Bashkir Curly Horses can still be traced to the
Damele Herd of Nevada. Also, many Curlies can be found today on the
Reservations of the Dakotas. Many more have been found roaming free in
the west and have been rounded up, domesticated, and bred by ranchers.

The American Bashkir Curly Horse Registry (ABCR) was founded in 1971
with only 21 horses. The founders wanted to save this rare horse from
extinction. Some other associations are the Canadian Curly Horse
Association formed in 1993, The International Curly Horse Organization
formed in 2000, and most recently, Curly Sporthorse International formed
in 2003.

Bashkir Curly Horses come in any color and pattern and have a
large range of curly phenotypes. If the gene is fully expressed, the
horse will have curl all over its body, a mane of dreadlocks, and curly

horse may
just have curls inside the ears, on the fetlocks, and showcase a kinky
or very wavy mane and tail. Some purebred Curlies have no curl at all
(because the gene is heterozygous) and are called "smooth coat" Curlies.
The curl is most prominent in winter coats and may just appear
as gentle waves in the summer coat. Their manes are split, meaning it
falls on both sides of the neck. It is generally accepted that Curly
manes aren't braided or banded for shows. Most people don't comb the
manes but do trim them to keep them from matting

Their confirmation resembles that of early Morgans. They generally have
a height of 14-16 hh but can range from miniature to draft size. They
have strong bones, a tough build, and great stamina as well as a huge
intent to please. They have gentle, calm eyes with a slight oriental
slant which gives them a rather lazy expression. Don't be fulled. These
horses are very alert! They are very intelligent, friendly, and
reliable, and have an easily trainable temperment. They love being
around people and children. They aren't flighty and seem to be uncomonly
adept at reasoning.

One last interesting tid bit: Bashkir Curly Horses are
hypoallergenic! Their fur lacks a certain protein, which means that
people that are usually allergic to horses can be around a Bashkir Curly
with no problems. Isn't that amazing?
