Lucy Liu to Play Watson in CBS' Sherlock Holmes Drama Pilot
She'll co-star opposite Jonny Lee Miller in "Elementary," the modern take on the famed story.

The Game Is Afoot,Not So Elementary, My Dear Watson...??? Lucyliu100grana

CBS' Sherlock Holmes pilot, Elementary, will indeed be a modern take on the famed story.
our editor recommends

For the first time, Holmes' famed sidekick, Watson, will be played by a woman with Lucy Liu nabbing the part, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Described as a modern take on the cases of Sherlock Holmes, with the detective now living in New York City, Dexter killer Jonny Lee Miller has been tapped to star in the project.

Holmes’s recovery is assisted by his Brooklyn housemate Watson, played by the Charlie’s Angels star Liu, who in this version is a former surgeon who lost her license after a patient died, while consulting for the NYPD.

Sherlock star has forged 'very special' relationship with blonde daughter of Patty Hearst

The Game Is Afoot,Not So Elementary, My Dear Watson...??? Benedictandhearst
Very close friends: Benedict Cumberbatch and Lydia Hearst at Cecconi¿s

As Sherlock Holmes, he has had more than his fair share of adventures. But Benedict Cumberbatch may now be learning that real life can be even stranger than fiction.

The actor has struck up a ‘very close’ friendship with Lydia Hearst, daughter of notorious kidnap victim and bank robber Patty Hearst.

Cumberbatch, 35, has been seen at a number of Hollywood parties with the 27-year-old model over the past month.

The pair were seated together at the 20th annual Elton John Aids Foundation Oscars Academy Awards viewing party on Sunday night, where one onlooker said they ‘only had eyes for each other’.

And perhaps it’s no wonder the British actor is captivated by Miss Hearst, given that her family background is more dramatic than many film scripts.

Her great-grandfather was William Randolph Hearst, the newspaper magnate said to have inspired the megalomaniac central character in Citizen Kane.

The Game Is Afoot,Not So Elementary, My Dear Watson...??? Pattyhearst

Her mother was an apolitical 19-year-old American heiress when she was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army, a Left-wing guerilla group, in 1974.

Faceless men show Gillard who’s boss
129 Comments

Oaktoad (Reply) Wed 29 Feb 12 (07:09am)
More wonderful news Piers. Gillard has absolutely no judgement at all
which is why the faceless men have to step in to control any major
decisions - at all times.

Little Bobby walks up to his dad and asks, “What is Politics?”

Dad says, “Well son, let me try to explain it this way: I am the head of
the family, so call me The Prime Minister. Your mother is the
administrator of the money, so we call her the Government. We are here
to take care of your needs, so we will call you the People. The nanny,
we will consider her the Working Class. Your baby brother, we will call
him the Future. Now think about that and see if it makes sense.”

So little Bobby goes off to bed thinking about what his Dad has just explained to him.

Later that night, he hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to
check on him. He finds that the baby has severely soiled his nappy. So
little Bobby goes to his parent’s room and finds his mother asleep.

Not wanting to wake her, he then goes to the nanny’s room. Finding the
door locked, he peeks in the keyhole and sees his father in bed with the
nanny. He gives up and goes back to bed.

The next morning, little Bobby says to his father, “Dad, I think I understand
the concept of politics now.”

The father says, “Good, son, tell me in your own words what you think politics is all about.”

Little Bobby replies, “The Prime Minister is screwing the Working Class
while the Government is sound asleep. The People are being ignored and
the Future is in deep shit.”

The faceless men, the ALP’s faction leaders have given Julia Gillard a
tap-dancing lesson and shown her really runs the government.

Yesterday the vetoed her decision to replace Senator Mark Arbib as a NSW
Senator with Bob Carr, the former long-serving NSW Premier.

According to Labor insiders, Carr, who does not drive, was booked to fly
from Sydney to Canberra to accept the nomination and was actually in a
car en route to the airport when word came that the faceless men had
given his appointment by Gillard the thumbs down.

NSW Labor Party secretary Sam Dastyari later admitted he had a discussion with Carr on Monday night about the Senate vacancy.

Carr was just collateral damage in Gillard’s struggle for authority.

The
real prize was the position of Foreign Minister left vacant by failed
prime ministerial pretender Kevin Rudd after his exit to the backbench.

It is understood that the factional bosses were furious when they learnt that Gillard
had offered Carr the post if he took the vacant Senate seat.

That was too much for a number of senior Labor figures, who demanded
that Gillard fill the vacancy with one of those who had supported her in
the bloody leadership battle, Defence Minister Stephen Smith or
Regional Minister Simon Crean.

Gillard, who had insisted on nominating members of her Cabinet following
the precedent set by Rudd when he became prime minister in 2007, was
told to call Carr and tell him that the job she had discussed with him a
week earlier was no longer available.

It was not hers to give, she was told by the factional bosses. She had
been rolled, a day after her victory over Rudd which supposedly ended
the bloodletting and restored her authority.

The faceless factional bosses have revealed that Gillard is just as
hollow now as she was when she took the prime ministership with the help
of the turncoat Independents and the slimy Greens.

Its tough for Carr, an expert on US history, and a deep thinker who has
long harboured an ambition to round out his public service with a stint
as foreign minister.

But his experience should be a warning to those silly Australians
who still think that Gillard can deliver - anything.

What Gillard says cannot be trusted.

Her word is worthless, she can’t deliver what she promises.

As Bob Carr has now found out to his humiliation.

In 1971 Sonia McMahon created a sensation when she wore a white evening dress

It sent diplomatic ripples around the world but no doubt thrilled President Nixon. Looking back at the photos, I must say she looked fabulous.

His term as Prime Minister was brought to an early and dramatic end
in December 1967
when he disappeared while swimming at Cheviot Beach
near Portsea, Victoria
, and was presumed drowned.

Holt's disappearance triggered a leadership crisis in the Liberal Party
which briefly raised the possibility of a split in the Coalition.

On the morning of 18 December Country Party leader John McEwen publicly declared
that neither he nor his Country Party colleagues would serve in a Coalition

if the deputy Liberal leader William McMahon were elected as Liberal leader.

In 1983, British journalist Anthony Grey published a controversial book
in which he claimed that Holt had been an agent for
the People's Republic of China
and that he had been
picked up by a Chinese submarine off Portsea and taken to China.

In 1968 the newly commissioned
United States Navy Knox class destroyer escort
USS Harold E. Holt (FF-1074) was named in his honour.

She was launched by Holt's widow Dame Zara
at the Todd Shipyards in Los Angeles on 3 May 1969,
and was the first American warship
to bear the name of a foreign leader.

In 1969 a plaque commemorating Holt was bolted to the seafloor off
Cheviot Beach after a memorial ceremony. It bears the inscription:

In memory of Harold Holt, Prime Minister of Australia, who loved the sea and disappeared hereabouts on 17 December 1967.
Other memorials include:
the suburb of Holt, Australian Capital Territory

By way of a folk memorial, he is recalled in the Australian vernacular expression
"do a Harold Holt" (or "do the Harry"), rhyming slang for "do a bolt" meaning
"to disappear suddenly and without explanation", although this is usually employed
in the context of disappearance from a social gathering rather than a case of presumed
death.[13]

Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations – Bob Carr’s favourite book
5 comments

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus - the great 2nd century Roman emperor –
wrote one of the great works of literature Meditations in, Greek, about his ideas of
Stoic philosophy. It is Bob Carr’s favourite book*.

An irony is that this last of the so-called ‘five good emperors’
lent support to his son and successor Commodus.
Firstly Aurelius groomed Commodus for succession,
and ultimately shared the throne with his son
who then enjoyed an unchallenged succession.
Cassius Dio wrote of Commodus that his rule turned the Empire

<blockquote>from a kingdom of gold to one of rust and iron.</blockquote>

Among many unsavoury features of Commodus
(which included shameful cruelty),
he squandered the resources of the State,
almost depleting the treasury.
He responded by devaluing the currency
leading to an extended period of hyperinflation
(including by debasing and reducing
the percentage of silver in coins).
He also seized property in a vain attempt
to replenish the treasury which,
naturally, tends to inhibit economic activity.

Is history repeating itself:
Carr following his hero in
promoting and giving aid and comfort to a corrupt,
incompetent and wasteful regime?

Some memorable quotes from Meditations:

<blockquote>The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane.

Observe constantly that all things take place by change, and accustom
thyself to consider that the nature of the Universe loves nothing so
much as to change the things which are, and to make new things like
them.

Time is a sort of river of passing events, and strong is its current;
no sooner is a thing brought to sight than it is swept by and another
takes its place, and this too will be swept away.

To understand the true quality of people, you must look into their minds, and examine their pursuits and aversions.

We are too much accustomed to attribute to a single cause that which
is the product of several, and the majority of our controversies come
from that.

To the wise, life is a problem; to the fool, a solution.
