THERE is nothing to suggest the disappearance of Barwon Prison boss
David Prideaux in the Victorian alps is suspicious, says police chief
Simon Overland.

There is still no sign of the 50-year-old hunter, who has spent
four nights in snow and freezing conditions in the Alpine National Park,
near Mansfield in Victoria's northeast.Speculation is mounting
that Mr Prideaux's disappearance could be linked to his position as the
general manager of the maximum-security Barwon Prison, which has housed
the likes of gangland killer Carl Williams.But Mr Overland said there was no indication that Mr Prideaux's disappearance was suspicious."On
all the information available to me at the moment, it looks like he's
gone missing, as pure and simple as that," Mr Overland said yesterday."I understand there's been some speculation as to whether there's more behind it. I think it's just that -- speculation.

"Our priority at the moment is still around trying to find this man
hopefully safe and well, and that will continue to be our priority for
the immediate future."An 80-strong search party of police, SES
volunteers and Bush Search and Rescue volunteers failed to find any sign
of the hunter when they resumed their search yesterday around the
Tomahawk Creek area.Improving weather has boosted hopes of
finding Mr Prideaux but searchers held grave concerns for his well-being
before what would be his fifth night in the alps."There's no sign of him and that's not good," said Rik Head, a Bush Search and Rescue Victoria field organiser."You'd hope we would have found some signs of him somewhere."It's
not as promising as it would be on day one, but people have been known
to survive in worse conditions than this for longer than this."We're just hoping that he can pop up somewhere."Mr
Prideaux is an experienced hunter and was well equipped to cope with
the weather over a short time, but he wasn't carrying an EPIRB
(Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon).Bureau of
Meteorology senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said while rainfall and
snow were easing in the national park, conditions were still cold and

UPDATE 7.32pm: Police say it is unlikely missing Barwon Prison boss
David Prideaux will be found alive and they will scale back the search.

Mr Prideaux, 50, went missing last Sunday after he failed to return
from a hunting trip in the Alpine National Park, near Mansfield in
Victoria's northeast.

Police Acting Superintendent Nigel Howard
on Friday said the search for Mr Prideaux would be scaled back because
numerous factors were working against finding him alive.

"We've
had medical advice, our search and rescue people's expertise, the
conditions, the temperatures up there, the fact that we have had snow
and we have done everything that we possibly can to locate him," he
explained.

Snow and high winds had hampered the hunt for Mr
Prideaux, but search and rescue personnel had hoped good conditions
today would have helped them locate him.

Although Mr Prideaux was an experienced deer hunter, he would have
had to endure five freezing nights in the harsh terrain without any
overnight gear.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Simon Overland
has dismissed speculation Mr Prideaux's disappearance was linked to his
role as the head of Barwon Prison.
